Windows XP - Can't access Advanced Options menu (F8 key hijacked by BIOS)

Q: Windows XP - Can't access Advanced Options menu (F8 key hijacked by BIOS)

Hello,

I have a computer that is stuck in a loop and won't boot into normal or safe mode. There is a blue screen flashing up, but way too quick for me to be able to see the STOP code.

The problem I have is that the American Megatrends BIOS 2.51, has an option on the boot screen "Press F8 for BBS Popup". Therefore I can't use the F8 key to get into the Windows XP Advanced Options menu. Why the hell has a BIOS manufacturer hijacked an important Windows key?????

I have also tried pressing the F8 key AFTER the BIOS screen, but even by doing that you still get a boot order list by pressing F8, and not the Advanced Options menu.

Does anyone know how to either:
1. Disable the Press F8 for BBS Popup in the BIOS? (I've looked, so has a workmate, but we can't see it)

or

2. Is there an alternative to using the F8 key to access the Advanced Options menu?

Hope someone can help.

Preferred Solution: Windows XP - Can't access Advanced Options menu (F8 key hijacked by BIOS)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If your keyboard has a "F-lock" key, press it before F8.

A:Windows Advanced Options Menu

Welcome to TSG---

Try choosing Disable Automatic Restart from that Windows Options menu. That flash of blue should then become a blue screen stop error which hopefully gives more information about the specific error.

Post the blue screen error---word for word please.

Also---any new hardware or software installed recently? Unplug any external devices and try the boot again.

I had wanted to change the minimum amount of memory to my intel HD 515 graphics and make some other tweaks for gaming, and I turned off my laptop, pushed the novo button on the side, it booted up and I chose the Bios setup option. I started going through the menus and I HAD an advanced menu which gave me the graphics memory options, it had overclocking options, option to enable NFC, 3D Camera and a bunch of other stuff. I even showed to someone, so I was NOT hallucinating haha. I had decided to reboot and wait so I could google a lot of the options as I didn't understand some of the super-super advanced settings. When I went back to the bios, no advanced menu is present and I can NOT get it back. A lot of stuff says you CAN'T get it, but I DID.  Anyone? Was it some super weird glitch or did I bump the right key combo? I did a google search and have found a few others that have also accidentally done this, including a screenshot of the SAME menu I got from another Lenovo user.

I was surfing the web when a blue screen of death flashed up and my Dell Inspiron E1505 restarted, taking me to the usual Windows Advanced Options Menu -- except now I can't leave. If I don't touch anything, it hovers over 'boot normally' for 30 seconds before freezing. If I go up and hit enter on 'safe mode' it also just freezes and absolutely nothing happens. You see all the options still, but now you can't move up/down w/ the keyboard to re-select. I've tried the different variants: 'safe mode with networking,' 'boot from last good config' etc. Nothing works. I've run the "PSA+ Pre-boot System Assessment" two times (including the extended memory test) and it passes everything / no problems. Then it asks to re-boot, and again it hangs in the same menu without getting anywhere. I can't do a repair/recovery because this is a hand-me-down laptop from my brother, so I don't have any CDs. Please help!

If this fails then you may need to run Dell Windows 7 PC Restore from it's partition, or get a superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 following the steps and methods and using only the tools to maintain a perfect reinstall.

Hello, Recently, my system was found to be infected with malware and was removed with assistance from Moderators- Pizza and Pepsi/Boopme here in this forum. However, I'm not able to to update MS Office 2007 to service pack 3 and it may or may not be due to malware infection found in the system. Additionally, upon PC bootup, an error screen with Window XP Advanced options Menu shows up every time. It must be noted that I'm able to logon to Windows XP in Normal mode without any issues. I have a computer that keeps going back to the advanced options menu. So it won't boot to the desktop. Each time I select safe mode, command prompt, last known good config, safe mode with networking or whatever the choice may be it keeps coming back to the advanced options menu.

My strategy is to clean the drive for viruses then see what happens. Then I'll try connecting a known working hard drive to the computer to test whether a hardware malfunction is causing the problem. Then if those steps fail look to reinstall Windows if the hard drive is healthy.

Any advise?

A:Advanced Options Menu ineffective

Yep, your right - AV the drive - pop a new one in and stick an OS on there and then slave the 'old' drive to recover your data - Thats the best thing you can do. Well advised Jones!

This is a very unique problem, apparently. I'm working on recovering a machine from a month-long period of time during which it was completely overrun with spyware and virues.

Some of the other problems that I've managed to solve include:
*(windows Explorer)>Tools>Folder Options>View was totally blank...no check boxes at all.
*Start>Program Files was unresponsive...only access to programs was via desktop shortcut, or Windows Explorer.
*Disappearance of the Recycle Bin or a corresponding _RESTORE folder.

Currently, I have the following issues to contend with:
*System Restore can only be activated or deactivated via direct registry edit. When you try from the System Properties window, it simply tells you that an error occurred and to try a restart.
*The advanced start menu options are blank. There are no options to turn off or on things like "Show Network Connections." The options can be turned on in the registry, but the options are missing altogether from the 'rt-click-on-the-start-button' process.
*Any instance of IE that is open shows in the taskbar as "Windows Explorer," rather than Internet Explorer.

I've got the spyware and virus problem eliminated, but repairing the damage left in the wake has overwhelmed me at this point. These are things I haven't run into in the past, and when searching "advanced start menu options missing," you can imagine the kinds of results that I get: all how-to's o... Read more

Hi!

However, this is now gone, and i have been unable to enter my bios. The "windows starting" appears and everything else is as usual, it has been working fine, so i dont know for how long my bios have been gone.
Now, what i really want is ree-booting some USB options, since this is done in BIOS i discovered i no longer have acces during startup. I dont know if my faulty USB and the BIOS-gone-bye-bye is related...

I have edited msconfig, tried safe modes etc., disabled "Hibernate" (due to someone having my problem and seeing the message "resuming windows" instead of "starting windows", however i just dont get a message like that)

I have been adviced to clearing my CMOS but this requires acces to BIOS and BIOS is ... hiding!
WHAT I DO GET:
a black screen, white letters, a quit look at "Pheonix Trusted core... BIOS version .. system ID... 1 processer detected " ie the ususal stuff. But there is no line with "Press DEL to enter setup" it is gone!

System information tells me that my BIOS is Phoenix Technologies LTD.

Entering DEL a lot during startup (I dont think it is a fast startup, but i do not know) gives me a new black screen, white letters, and Windows Advanced options, such as running a memory scan.

I am begging for help as this problem is driving me insane! To start the story Windows 10 asked me to upgrade last year, and God I wish I didn't. I had nothing but problems with the OS, mainly down to it being unsupported for my notebook by HP. I Decided to roll back to Windows 8 and during the rollback, the notebook has failed catastrophically! 'Luckily' the recovery option kicked in, but this also failed and crashed mid recovery.  I am now left with the boot failing immediatley and showing a BCD error 0x0000034. (press esc for UEFI). Once in UEFI the only option that doesnt bring the same BCD error is the HP System Test. This works ok and the system passes all tests (including hard drive which though a lot of searching online is often the root cause of the above error) I want to enter the BIOS settings and set it to boot from USB in order to use my windows recovery USB, but pressing F11 or F10 goes straight to the Blue screen of death with the same error above! I am fairly proficient with computers and managed quite a few repairs etc, but this loop of blue screen with no conceivable boot option is driving me insane! Someone please help! Thanks in advance, Thebgb!

No, that is NOT the fastest computer to game on.  Here is a little primer ... E series devices are 'Entry level' products, designed for the casual user who wants to do the basics at a reasonable price.  These models are not targeted at heavy users like gamers, photo editors, video makers, etc.  For big time gaming power, take a look at the Predator line.  Now THAT is a gaming platform!

My Fujitsu T902 won't let me into the boot menu by pressing F12 anymore, it just beeps and loads up Windows normally. I couldn't find an official Win8 ISO so I used Win10 Beta, though I don't remember how I managed to boot into it.

I want a fresh install as I again tried installing Ubuntu via Advanced Start-Up. Then it booted into Ubuntu but couldn't load the Windows image. I managed to get back into Windows by adjusting my boot settings. Somehow the Ubuntu startup menu was able to get me into my boot settings menu, but no keyboard shortcut seems to let me in.

Hi,
I have a Dell 5010 and replaced the HDD after the original drive went faulty. I made a recovery drive on a USB flash so that I could do a reinstall after fitting the new drive. Anyway, after fitting the drive and restarting the laptop, it will not allow me to access the advanced boot menu. It just goes to a blank screen with a flashing cursor.
I have run the Dell diagnostics tool and there are no issues. This tool reported a faulty drive with the previous HDD which led to me replacing it.
Any suggestions?

My system is showing an internal hard drive error and F8 advanced boot options page doesn't appear to exist anymore (lost recovery via F8). That limits my troubleshooting.

The system is a Dell Inspiron 560 desktop with core 2 quad Q8300 CPU at 2.5 ghz. 6.144 GB of RAM with DDR3 SDRAM. It's 3 years old with Windows 7 Home Premium. The computer is basically used only for surfing the web and has 98% of the RAM free. When the system was purchased 3 years ago it came with no recovery disks or any b/u software. I'm not really worried about losing the data on it as other than the Windows Operating system, there's not much that couldn't be resurrected from the web. This chain of events started 2 weeks ago when I received a windows "Boot Configuration data file is missing required info error." A system restore solved most of that issue and allowed access to Windows but I was still left with numerous script errors that locked me out of some frequently used web sites/pages. At that point I followed an on-line solution to properly repartition the boot config. Upon doing that and restarting, I lost the system Boot Manager and could not start the computer at all ("no boot device available"). I had hosed myself as no doubt my tinkering in the boot config mode wiped out the needed boot management for a proper reboot.

At that point I took it to a local repair tech who brought the computer back to factory condition, fixed the boot config, reloaded all software, updated ... Read more

A:SMART disk drive error-can't access Advanced Boot Options repair mode

While trying to load a HD sentinel from CNET I picked up a malware/spyware search engine called "Sweetpacks" that has become my new default search engine! It won't go away by selecting a new default browser either. A search of the forum for this bug suggests loading a particular cleaner program. Tried that and the links are no longer any good.

Decided to do a system restore back to early this morning when I first loaded the Mozy "free" backup program. That got rid of the Sweetpacks malware/search engine as well. One less problem. But now I'm afraid to load any HDD sentinel from the internet.

Note that I never received a system recovery disk with this Dell system package. So running a recovery CD is not an option for me.

I press f2 at startup and get put into a black screen with white letters. I can either boot windows normally or run diagnostics. I need to change the boot order. I am running windows 7 off mac OS X if that would make a difference but I do not believe it would knowing I can still enter the boot menu. Windows still works like a regular windows computer but I can't seem to find the windows boot order. Can anyone help me with this? I have used Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool to format the USB correctly and install the ISO files. I am not sure where to go once in the windows boot menu so that is what I am asking for. Direction to the boot order so I can change it. Thanks!

A:Why can I not enter my boot options when in my bios menu?

Hello jeplonski Welcome to the Seven Forums! The place to look would be in the user manual for either the system if premade or the board if a custom build to find out exactly which F key you need to press at post time that's right when first turning on the power or following a system restart when either the factory logo screen appears or doesn't if disabled in the bios setup program for the main board itself.

Often it will be the F4 if not F8 or F11, F12 keys that are used for bringing up the one time boot device menu. The Del key or another of the F keys will be assigned for entering the setup program right after the drives and other devices are detected at post. Once in the advanced section of the bios you will find the boot order for assigning which will be first as well as if only one, two, or three drives or devices will be set in order.

For installation from dvd in past years the dvd drive would be set as first often if there wasn't any boot device menu you could bring to select cd rom drive and see Windows installed. You had to go back in following first system restart once all the setup files had been copied from disk to hard drive to set the OS drive as the first in the boot order. Now we generally either boot from the dvd or a USB Installation Key made up using the one time boot option.

The boot device menu is not found in Windows at post time but an optional boot menu you bring up at post time. Typically you should be seeing the F key indicated right as the sys... Read more

I have a Dell laptop running Windows XP Home. Everytime I boot the Advanced boot options menu comes up. Have tried everything on the menu including Last Known Good Configuration. How does one stop this from happening and go back to a normal boot screen?

Thanks

A:Advanced boot options menu comes up at every boot

Is it the full Advanced Options menu with all 11-12 items, or the short one that also says Windows Failed to start?

If it's the full menu, my first guess would be that the F8 key is stuck.
