How to replace harddisk for SONY VAIO laptop

Q: How to replace harddisk for SONY VAIO laptop

I have a SONY VAIO laptop with Windows XP Home version. It crashed several times during daily uses. So I tried to format the whole harddisk and reinstall Windows XP Home version. But it failed to format the harddisk. I also tried to install Windows 2000 but got the same problem. I'm thinking of that the harddisk may got damaged. If so, the question is how to replace it? I couldnot find any instructions on it.
PLEASE PLEASE help. It affected my life so much. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

check the sony website to make sure that your hdd was not a defect one that they will replace. i have a sony vaio desktop, and they are replacing many hard disk drives because they malfunction when exposed to humid or hot weather.

I am hoping to get everyone's opinion on what to "upgrade" to from my 5 year old Sony Vaio. I work at home and use a 2nd monitor as well. I used to upgrade every few years but they dont make Vaio's anymore and I am having trouble finding a laptop with newer/better hardware to replace my aging Vaio.

My Sony Vaio VPCF127FX consists of:
- Windows 7 64bit
- Intel i7 CPU (740QM @1.73GHz)
- 8 GB RAM (full capacity)
- 500GB SSD Samsumg EVO(upgraded from original HDD)
- 16.4" screen size

I need:
- Atl east 15" screen. bigger the better
- MUST BE A LAPTOP
- SSD

I have gone to all the local computer shops such as best buy, office depot, frys, etc but I have yet to find a laptop that is a significant upgrade to this one. I have seen some samsung laptops that look nice but aren't much faster. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Looks like I'm gonna need to replace the mobo and I need some guidance on how to remove the liquid-cooling apparatus. The heatsink has some copper tubing that carries the coolant to and from the "radiator" which is located in the higher compartment. There must be a trick to it. I have searched but cannot seem to find a manual.

Can anyone here help me with this?

Yes, it should work. You won't get the full speed of the SSD due to the laptop's SATA controller only being SATA 2(3GB/s) but it should work and be a lot faster.

The problem is that I can see the video from Avid in the viewfinder but it freezes in the viewfinder even though it is playing on the computer. This is preventing me from outputting a project. Hi,
I have recently purchased a Sony Vaio Laptop with wifi support that is inbuilt or onboard. I already have a Asus P5E3 Deluxe motherboard at my home with ram 2 gb, 9800 gtx card and a quad core processor. Now, I connect this pc with a broadband connection at home running 1mbps speed. This motherboard also has a wifi onboard connection. What I am trying to do is setup this wifi connection so that my laptop can also connect to the internet wirelessly. For this I have installed the wifi driver of Asus (something called Asus WiFi-AP @n software) and configured it with giving it a proper connection name and a password. I have successfully done all the wifi network setup wizard on the pc and it is working well. Now the problem is that, my laptop is able to find this wifi connection but after sometime it gives an error saying to troubleshoot network connection and the wifi network disappears from the laptop and again i have to search for this wifi network and the cycle continues. Similarly, when I am trying to connect my Nokia e90 mobile phone with the pc via wifi, my phone is able to pickup the wifi connection and sometimes it is able to connect to the internet and I am also able to browse different websites but sometimes it gives me a gateway time out error. So, can anyone tell me how can i connect my sony vaio laptop to the internet wirelessly by using the Asus P5E3 Deluxe WiFi-AP @n connection? There is a small switch inside the headphone jack that cuts off the speekers when headphones are connected. This switch is likely broken and the only way to fix it so you could get sound through headphones and not speekers would be to send it in to have the jack repaired. You could disable integrated audio and get a usb or PCMCIA sound card to use for headphones but then your internal speakers wouldn't work at all, even when headphones were disconnected.

Anyone got any tips?

Normal.

The fan on a laptop will run for a few seconds until the temperature monitoring software loads, then it only runs when it gets hot enough.

Unless the laptop is overheating, you don't have a problem?

My Sony VAIO laptop will only run in Safe Mode and BIOS. I have installed every possible OS on the planet including it's own restore disks. I have done every thing I can think of shy of new RAM and CPU and HD to figure out why it does this. Please Help !!

A:Sony Vaio Laptop

Hi there!

If it runs in Safe Mode, then it's most likely caused by a software or driver issue.

In safe mode
run MSCONFIG
Check "Selective Startup"
UN-CHECK "process config.sys file" (if there)
UN-CHECK "process autoexec.bat file" (if there)
UN-CHECK "Load Startup Group Items"

click apply, then OK or Close
reboot and see!

If there's a specific error message, please post it here!

Good Luck!

does anyone have any idea where I can get a replacement power jack for a sony vaio laptop that is 5 years old or so. I mainly use it to browse the web, and check email, (buying a new one seems impractical) and currently the power cord won't register as connected. I checked the solder points on the power jack and everything looks good. No cracks or anything. If you hold the tip of the power cord into the jack extremely tight, it will atleast flash the lights like it detects the connection. Anyone have any other thoughts?

Is there some way to force it to switch on? Perhaps a setting to tell the PC to turn it on at a lower temperature?

Usually its temperature controlled, but most laptops run the fan briefly at the beginning of the boot process. If that is not happening, perhaps it needs replacement.

There is no setting that I am aware of to force it.

Hi all. I've got this Sony Vaio laptop that I'm trying to get it to work. A friend of mine said he used it for parts, so it is missing a few hardware pieces. However, I am having problems getting it to run.

It is missing a hard drive, and the RAM pieces.

When I plug it in, the power icon works, shows a green light.

The product name is VPCF136FM, the model is PCG-81115L.

When I turn the machine on, screen doesn't turn on. It just stays black, I can hear the GPU fan turn on (It takes about 15 seconds for the GPU fan to even turn on), but no matter how long I leave the laptop on, the screen just stays black, it does nothing. I was thinking maybe the GPU was taken out, but I later learned the graphics card is basically embedded into the motherboard, so you can't remove it.

Anyone know why the screen isn't working? Or should I just throw it in the trash?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

A:Need Help With Sony Vaio Laptop

Without RAM it will never run. You MUST have at least one RAM module.

A:Laptop SONY vaio

What is the model of this Vaio, and roughly how old is it ?

Do you get to see the BIOS screen when it starts - that's the one that says Sony Vaio or somesuch all over it - or do you not get any screen at all ?  If you do get the BIOS screen have a look and see what key it says for 'Setup'. This is usually either 'F2' or 'Delete' but it does vary. Then re-boot and press that key. If you saw the BIOS screen, this should now take you into the BIOS itself. The trackpad doesn't work in here, you need to use the arrow keys to move around. Move along the top line to 'Exit' and press 'Enter'. this will bring up a screen which among other options says 'Restore defaults and exit'. Select this one - with the arrow keys - then press 'Enter' again. This guarrantees that at least you have the system defaults set. The system will now try to re-boot. If it does, great. If not . . .

If this laptop is over three years old the battery may have died and I have known cases where a dead battery stopped a laptop starting even though plugged into the mains. Try taking the battery out and starting it just with the mains charger plugged in.

Post back and let us know how you get on with this. It may be that this Vaio is heading for its final reward but there is no doubt data on the hard drive that you may well want to recover which is not an overly difficult task.

They said that all hardwares are looking fine, no physical damage, but laptop still crashes even when it's cold.Did malware and virus scan-clean, did triple ramtest check-clean, graphic overcloac test- no crashes. I went in safemode and opened 10 youtube videos and 3 games at once-works fine. I very much doubt it. But many laptops have a jack for an external keyboard. If you could find one you liked, even a wireless one, you could use that instead. Wireless would allow you to really manipulate the placement and angle for the most comfortable access.

I have a Sony Vaio, FS740/W lap top, whose video will hopefully that will go into a Sharp LC big screen Model LC52L65U with a 15 pin PC input

I used the standard VGA cord that came with my LG monitor, (that I was using on my desktop which is now using digital) , and plugged it into the TV, and into the Laptop.

Any ideas? I was hoping I could plug in the laptop and use the big screen to teach some of the veterans here, how to access the internet. Easier to do with a big screen, if ya know what I mean.

My Sony Vaio PCG-Y1L crashed recently. It was running Windows Vista Home Edition but the problem is I bought this when it was being phased out (floor model) at Office Depot back in 2006. I was never given a system restore disk or an OEM copy of the operating system. When it crashed, I used a backed up copy of Vista Ultimate that came with my old Dell and now every time I boot the laptop up it tells me I'm running a copy of Windows that isn't genuine. I want to wipe the disk clean and reinstall a legit copy of Windows -- my question is, since I have the product key that came with my laptop (and I legally purchased the laptop WITH the OS on it), can I legally install someone else's Visa Home Edition and just use my product key?

A:Sony Vaio laptop crashed

Contact Sony and get you self a set of CD's. They run about $25.00 US including shipping. It will be a Vista Home Edition as that is what came on the machine.

There was a hidden partition that is used to do System Recover, which will set it back to factory settings. But since you used a different CD to rebuild, then the recover will NOT work. The key that you have will only work with the Vista Home Edition and you have installed Vista Ultimate version.

If you get the CD from Sony, you will not need to enter the Key Code, just activate the OS.
Now if you have a Retail Vista Home Edition CD, then you can rebuild it and use the listed Key Code with it.

Sorry, wasn't sure exactly what section this problem belonged in, so i'm posting here.

I'm using my sister's Sony Vaio laptop that i decided to downgrade from vista home premium to windows XP. The first thing i should have done should've been to get all the hardware information while on vista.... but i completely forgot. I backed up my general files but not the hardware information.

Now I'm stuck with a brand new installation of windows XP and no internet because XP isn't recognizing my NIC.

I've been googling around for some hours now with nothing.

I've gone to all the main "official" Vaio Sony sites. They all ask for model or product, but for some reason my model doesn't come up anywhere i check. There is also another option to type down your serial and product key which is a 15 digit number. Whereas the first 7 digits are the serial and the 8 other digits the product key. Still it doesn't seem to be a model of any sort... No site recognizes this Vaio model for some odd reason.

Model : PCG-5K1L.

I installed service pack 3, i thought it would at least be able to detect a network card, but to no avail it couldn't.

Everest home edition has no more luck detecting.

In hardware manager the only thing detected was the 1394 firewire port.

This laptop, from what my sister said, came with no manual or other useful information; meaning none.

I'm really stumped on what else I could do. I was thinking i... Read more

Display Driver?:Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family

Hard Drive: 120GB

Now with some of the problems:

My system has recently been randomly turning aero off, but I haven't made any major change recently but it still decides to randomly shut off aero. I need to know how to fix this.

The laptop comes stock with 2x512MB of ram, and apparently from using it this long, from around July, I believe I would be better with 2GB of ram. I need to know how to do this.

Today I went to try to play the game FlyFF and it went find for about 20mins and then randomly my display driver crashed. It recover immediately, well as so Vista said, but my computer was stuck with this big white box over the screen and I had no choice but to power off manually because nothing worked. Now I need to know if there is anyway to have some shop or way of getting a new display driver or getting a better one, or one I can actually work with. I can't play any games grrr. Any help?

I believe thats it. Sorry I couldn't find that much info on it. There was specs on E/B but I have just E.

1) McAfee is pretty useless in my opinion. If it were my system I'd uninstall it and replace it with any other av app.

2) Which process is hogging the cpu when it spikes?

I have a Sony VAIO laptop model number VGN-N250E and I can see there is a recovery partition, however I do not know how to boot into it to do a system recovery and google and sony have both been useless. Someone please enlighten me as to how to boot into it. Thank you.

***EDIT*** - I found the VAIO Recovery Center finally after using Windows Help of all things lol. Even smart ppl like me need to resort to n00b tools now and then when all other sources fail.

A few weeks ago, my computer started making a clicking noise when it would turn on. Then Windows (XP) would boot normally. A few days after this started, anytime I tried to open a program, it would tell me it either does not exist or I do not have permission to access it. This includes all windows system programs like defrag, disk cleanup, as well as all installed programs. I "can" hit control/alt/delete and do a new task and open up a few things with that (Like the browser, email, defrag, disk cleanup, and a few others). There have been a few times while starting that it tells me no operating system found, then it will restart and Windows will boot up normally. I tried to do a system restore back to Feb 22nd which is the furthest back it would allow me to go, and it still won't let me open anything. I'm trying to find my system recovery disks to restore it back to factory settings but I'm missing one. I can't even make new ones because I cannot get into that program on the computer!

Do you have any advice?? Do you think it's the hard drive? Or some issue with the entire laptop? Any help would be greatly appreciated so I hopefully don't have to go buy a new one!

Jen

My computer is a Sony Vaio VGN-FS660 series with Windows XP.

Does anyone know if my hard drive has had it?? In the middle of using a basic game and the screen went all weird. When shut down tried to start it again but it would not start up. Makes a funny crunching noise and then does nothing. No hard drive activity light. Absolutely nothing on screen at all on start up. Could it be anything else other than the hard drive.

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks.

Adi.

Hi,

I have a Sony Vaio Vgn-s38gp Laptop that I have recently performed a recovery on to reset the system. Prior to starting this process all functions such as the inbuilt mouse, wireless etc all were working fine. Now the laptop has the software for all the functions but when I enter into device manager it is registered as a pc. It thinks that there is a usb connecting the keyboard to the system and that it doesn't have the facilities to use the wireless internet.

Is there any way to change my system back to registering as a laptop? I have had this problem in the past (many years ago when we did a system recovery then) but can't remember how we got around this.

Please help!

Hey guys. I have a Sony Vaio laptop that is about 4 years old. It's always been a good machine but I haven't been using it because it shuts off randomly for no reason and with no warning. SometimesI could use it for 3 hours doing whatever I want... Other times it shuts off like the power is cut instantly, even when I'm first booting it up before it's in use and getting hot.

I took the cover off today after looking around and the other forums with similar issues all saying it was full of dust and probably needed to be cleaned... Well as you can see, dust is not the problem.

Do you guys have any ideas?

Greetings - I've looked at considerable input, but can't find anything that tells me how to replace the hard drive in the subject Sony laptop. I can tell by the sound where it is, but can't figure out how to get to it. Took out all the screws, but can't pry off the back. I'm sure there are some clips I'll break.
Anyone know of a step-by-step for a person who is a step or two above a novice??

Many thanks!

I didnt know where to put this topic, but Im pretty sure its a hardware issue, so I decided to put it here.
Okay, so here's the problem: The sound worked perfectly before. Today, I had the sound muted, but I heard a feint static sound in the speakers. As I put my ear up to it, it popped and went away. The sound has not worked ever since that happened. I turned it off, took the battery out, restarted it, and still no sound. Then I uninstalled the Realtek High Definition Audio driver, restarted, waited for it to reinstall, and still nothing. After that, I did the same thing with the 4 NVIDIA High Definition Audio drivers and still nothing. THEN I checked to see if any of those 5 were out of date. They weren't, but I restarted again anyway...still nothing. Finally, I restored the system to the last restore point of May 15th, and it still doesn't output sound. This leads me to believe that its a hardware issue, but what do the tech guys think?

I should also point out that sound doesn't come out when headphones are plugged in either.

Hi, I have a sony vaio laptop 'vgn-ns30es' and for the past week it has slowed down considerably. I'm not really sure what the problem could be but it is quite slow on when I'm on the internet or when I'm just using the laptop ie using Word etc. I have noticed some spikes on the CPU usage going up to 100% now but can't seem to figure out whats wrong with it. I have scanned it with Mcafee and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware but this hasn't helped. Any help is much appreciated. I have also rebooted it with all the start up programs taken off. Please let me know if it is a possible infection or how I can resolve this. Thanks in advance

I bought a Vaio laptop from a friend a few weeks ago and his windows installation was corrupted with all types of spy/malware. He couldn't find his "Rescue" cds and I'm not the greatest fan of windows to begin with, so I put Fedora 6 linux on it. Well I went out and bought a XP install cd because the laptop just isn't functional enough without windows on it I'll keep the linux for my servers and home workstation...

So... my problem is thus:

I put the cd in the drive, it says "Press any key to boot from CD..." I hit enter...

It says "Setup is Determining your System Configuration" then goes black... and it sits there for about 20 minutes before I shut it off in frustration. I've rebooted 10 times to no avail. Is windows mad because there is linux on my machine?

I'm assuming that there are proprietary drivers for the intel 915 chipset that aren't included with the XP install so its not working. If that is the case is there a place to get those drivers and implant them into the XP install??

Help?

I have a friends laptop sony vaio PCG-9N1M winXP Home

1) she had a keyboard caps lock always on - could not seem to stop it however, the shift key on the right hand side of the keybpard worked ok - so she continued using the laptop like that or a while

2) she was not happy with performance and decided she would restore the laptop using the restore CD supplied - then it started crashing wth stop code 0x0..8E

3) handed to me to have a look - so I tried to recovery using custom where you reformat the harddrive and rebuild - which I have done - however, the capslock is still on and it also blue screens + i had a NTOSKRNL.EXE error - which may be due to keyboard -

4) works OK in safe mode - I set automatic restart off - now it restarted into full windows - without a caplock problem - ???? - so i restarted the PC and got a blue screen with 0x0..7F error

5) Now it reboots into windows - a window comes up saying windows has had a sever error - do i want to report to microsoft

i have not really done much else with the PC

6) did not find the model on the sony website - as i had hoped it may just need drivers
any help welcome - thanks in advance

I have a Sony Laptop VGN-AR730E/B running Windows Vista. I had to format and reinstall from my recovery disks but I did not install all the Vaio programs as I had my own programs that did what most of them did, only better. I did not install all of the Sony Vaio applications because they seemed to be bloatware and excessive programs at that. When I have a CD or DVD in the tray, the eject button and the sound control above it on top of the laptop that has the + and - do not work. I can open the CD/DVD tray by the little button on the side of the computer but not with the eject button on top. Everything else works fine and I have no conflicts in device manager. If someone could tell me which part of the Vaio programs controls this so that I could install it I would be most appreciative. I've posted this question on the Sony software forum but not a single reply has been made and that was over 2 weeks ago.

Thanks for all your help in advance.

Hey all,

Sony Vaio laptop version PCG-61112L
Model VPCCW17FX does not turn on. Laptop adapter light does not appear even when plugged into a power outlet. Tried using the battery, but laptop still does not start up. No noise from laptop and adapter.
Using Windows 7.

Is there something wrong with the adapter or hard drive or something else?

Is it possible to start the laptop without erasing the data/files inside?

Thanks all
