Internet disconnects after 10 minutes

Q: Internet disconnects after 10 minutes

I have just restored my XP system to SP2 after a problem with the USB controller. That fixed, Windows decided to update to SP3 which went ahead with no problems.

Now, though, my internet connection (wired LAN) keeps dropping after about 10 minutes. The only way to get it back is to restart. I have installed the latest network card drivers, but still get "internet explorer cannot display the webpage". I have tried with IE 7 and Safari 3. Renewing the DHCP lease and/or setting the DNS to a manual address do not solve the issue either.

I can still ping hosts on my local network and on the internet like Google, Apple etc and get a full set of replies. However, when i try to ping this machine from another on my network, it fails.

Even though my connection is apparently not there, the LAN status icon says it is still connected. Repairing the connection doesn't affect it.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Internet disconnects after 10 minutes

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have two computers hardwired to a router along with one that accesses the router by a wireless connection. One of the computers hardwired to the router disconnects from the internet exactly every ten minutes and I have to restart to be able to connect again. This happens consistently every time. All the other computers work fine and have no problems.

Can anyone please help. I have not been able to figure out what it is. I tried connecting through the wireless card on this computer and the same thing happens. It is running Windows XP Professional.

Following is the HiJack This report.

Recently, my PC has been randomly disconnecting from the internet every few minutes for about 5-10 minutes.
I'm sure it isn't the router or ethernet cable as I have tried it in my netbook which runs Windows XP and it works fine.
I have performed a virus scan which has found nothing and I haven't changed any settings recently. I connect straight to the router with a ethernet cable.
Any help would be appreciated.

A:Internet disconnects every few minutes

You might want to consider updating the firmware for your router. XP is old school and things have changed since then.

With no ipconfig/all info, no router hardware/model version info and no system specs I can only guess at what the problem might be.

I too am having problems with my internet connection disconnecting after about 30 minutes. I am using XP Home. I connect by an antenna on my roof receiving an RF signal (I think) or it might be a microwave signal. Anyway the cable comes down through the wall into my router. I have to power down the router and power it up again to reconnect. Anyone with ideas?

Even though it appears you're having the same problem, please start a new thread when you have a new issue. It's very difficult to keep two problems straight and who's working on what in a single thread.

I've created a new thread for your issue here.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Recently every 20-90 minutes or so my internet just suddenly stops working. This is the only the case on one of my computers. I currently have a laptop and a desktop which connect via wireless adaptors. The computer with this problem is connected via a ethernet cable from the router.

I have called my internet provider talktalk, who say there shouldnt be any problems with the internet on their end.
I have done a full virus scan using Avast anti virus and scanned for spyware/malware using Malware Bytes, Spybot: search and destroy, and Ad-Aware

When the internet stops working, and i try to repair the Local Area Connection I get the error "unable to renew ip address"

To try resolve this problem i have tried changing the router from a netgear to a thomsom, but the exact same problem occurs.
I have also tried connecting a wireless adaptor into my computer, with no effect.

After i did some online research i also tried using "winsockxpFix.exe" which again didnt work.

I also followed some online steps to try renew my IP address using the cmd option on run and typing "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /renew" It seems to work fine if the internet is currently working, however when it is not running i get the following error:
"An error has occurred while renewing interface Local Area connection : Unable to contact your DHCP sever. Request has timed out"

When I type "ipconfig /all" into the cmd option i get:

I'm having a problem with my internet.. it started a week ago.. here's what happens: I suddenly lose connection for about a minute, and then it comes back for 5 minutes or so, then disconnects again.. then it comes back again and works for about 2 hours or so, and then cycle restarts.. the disconnecting happens 5-8 times per day and it's really getting on my nerves :< I dunno what's wrong, I talked to my ISP (Vodafone) 3 times, and they said everything is fine on their end, they even reconfigured my router like 2 times or so, and checked the phone lines and there's no breaking up or anything.. so I dunno what's really happening.. it happens to all of my devices (1 PC wired, 3 laps wireless), everytime I see this little "caution" sign on my connection I get really frustrated.. can anyone help? :<

I'm guessing that it's either something from my router/cables (the main cable which connects to router).. or the ISP has something... <beep> up.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

My Internet disconnects every few seconds/minutes. While I'm on Vent it will just disconnect and reconnect at least once every 3 minutes. Also, When I'm playing any games on steam, It will disconnect me from steam at times, but the game that I am playing online still plays just fine. I called my ISP and they said all the lines look fine. My brother says he doesn't have the problem, but he doesn't have steam or vent. He just uses browser mainly.

My PC:
Antec 900
Asus Sabertooth P67

XFX Radeon 6870
8gb Corsair Vengeance
750w Corsair PSU
640gb WD caviar blue

Router/Modem: Cisco DDR2200-CL

ISP: CenturyLink

Phone line is directly connected to the modem/router. Then from the modem the Ethernet cable goes to a box on the electrical outlet then gets picked back up in the office. I'm plugged into a switch from their.

I don't have a home phone. The only thing running on my phone line is the internet, so i don't have any filters on the phone jacks.

When I get disconnected, the Internet and DSL lights on the router remain solid green.

I am facing a strange problem. Every 10 minutes or so, my network connection just stop accepting the data packets. I have to use the "repair network" option and then everything runs fine again. This problem had starte d to occur recently. My guess was that this is something to do with my internet service provider but now I am starting to think whether some virus or trojan is controlling as the "connection repair" works pretty well for me.

On my Acer Laptop, my Internet always keeps on Disconnecting and Reconnecting every 10 - 15 minutes. Sometimes it doesn't but Sometimes it does. When it does it usually disconnects and reconnects all day. This gets in the way whenever i'm doing something on the internet. This does not happen on any other computer in the house, however. I am connected to my sister's computer, which is the main computer. The main computer used to be mine but we changed it when my sister moved into the room where the main computer was. The internet never disconnects for her or for my dad but it does for me, all the time. Does anyone know why?

Every few minutes, I won't be able to load up a webpage or a game I'm playing will lose connection. It'll then take about 30 seconds for it to be solved, and then a few minutes later it'll happen again.

Strangely, in the bottom-right in the taskbar, it never shows that I've lost connection, and my brother who lives in the same house apparently isn't having the same problem. Even more strange is that I do not get disconnected from MSN or an IRC chat I'm in when this happens.

I'll notice that when opening a web-page, the progress bar just stops at half way and the web page just never opens. I can then try many different websites and the same thing happens.

I'm using a wireless connection and the signal varies from 3-4 bars out of 5, on average. The wireless router is 2 floors down from where I am, but if I was losing connection because of that, I'd be disconnected from MSN wouldn't I? And as I said, when the web pages aren't loading, in the task bar it still shows a 3 or 4 bars out of 5 connection.

I'm using Windows 7.

I already looked into the thread "Interent Only Working for 5 Minutes!!!" but that doesn't explain much for me.

The internet works fine on my desktop computer. Security also works fine but is not the problem.

The problem is, my wireless internet on my laptop disconnects or restarts every 5 minutes.
I use "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" to connect wirelessly.

But for some reason, after I get connected on the internet, I quickly disable "Use Windows to configure ...", and VOILA, I stay connected for as long as nothing disconnects me. At this point, I'm confuse and would like an explanation why this is happening. Is windows turning off and on devices that I don't know about? What can I do so that I don't have to continuously disable and enable the "Use Windows to configure...." option to stay connect?

Thanks in advance.

Are you SURE that a 3rd party wireless client isn't running? That's the classic symptom of two wireless clients fighting it out for control of the wireless connection.

Try booting in safe mode with networking and see if the disconnections still occur.

Ok, this has become the most frustrating thing when trying to do work on the computer. I just don't understand why it is so difficult to stay connected to the internet with the most advanced router & high speed cable internet I could afford.

Apparently this router is a dual band, I set up 2 different networks when doing the initial install, but yet my computer only sees the 2nd network?!

What other info do you guys need to help me figure out why it keeps dropping the connection?

Thank you.

I am getting a temporary disruption in my internet connection every 60 to 66 minutes. Another system on the same modem (HughesNet) works fine. I have removed all non-essential programs, including antivirus. All of the components (Hard drive, video card, and memory) work fine in previously mentioned "other" machine that works. This is a Dell Dimension XPS 410 (Dimension 9200) system. Connection is wired, with no router (e.g. network cable directly between system and modem with nothing in between). I have also tried uninstalling and disabling the built in audio. I have the same problem with the built in network adapter as well as a new Intel network adapter that I recently purchased.

My ISP won't even talk to me anymore, and claim the problem is not on their end (which I am inclined to believe considering the other system maintains connection perfectly).

This is something that's been troubling me for about a week now.

Since about Wednesday last week, my internet had been going excruciatingly slow..by this i mean a site would take anywhere between 30 seconds and 1 minute to download, and that's if I'm lucky enough not to get a timeout error.

Anyway, that small annoying yellow bubble popped up in the bottom-right of my screen saying something like "Your computer's IP address is conflicting with another one on the network". So i told this to a friend on msn who talked me through a method of changing my IP address via command prompt. After a quick router restart and computer restart, i couldn't ping my old IP address so it had changed

Since then, my internet connection cuts out every 15-20 minutes. It's only happening with my computer, as the iMac and other Laptop on the wireless connection are still getting full speeds and are not being disconnected. So what could be wrong?

I'm using a BT Voyager 2091 Wireless ASDL Router. When the internet's working, all of the lights stay green, however when it cuts off the DSL light flashes slowly, then quickly (lasts about 2 minutes) then it goes back to solid green when i can reconnect.

It's really quite frustrating. If you need to know any more information i'd gladly provide details, because i've had enough

Ok, so I posted about 3 weeks ago about this problem I was having with net browsing. I have now got more information on the problem and I hope someone might be able to help me with it further as it remained unsolved before!

In order to connect to the wireless at my uni, you have install a program called VPN Client. You then connect through VPN client and on to the wireless. Now, a few weeks ago I had to install a new version of this program. The setup included uninstalling the older version. Everything installed fine and I was able to connect to the wireless through the VPN Client with no problem.

The trouble starts when I try to connect to any other wireless now. I'll turn my laptop on, connect to the internet and I'll be able to browse, download etc for about 10 minutes. I can still MSN and Skype after that but that's about it. So after much deliberation and posting on here etc it occurred to me that VPN Client might have something to do with the problem. So I uninstalled it. But when I did that, I didn't even get the 10mins browsing time. I tried reinstalling the older version when things were fine but again the same trouble. Once again, MSN and Skype works fine on either occasion. Then, when I install the newer version of the VPN Client, the 10mins browsing time limit returns.

ANY idea what the hell I can do about it? It's a bit annoying that I can only use the internet properly on my laptop when I'm at uni. Thanks in advance for any help.... Read more

Recently I've been experiencing random disconnects.

My setup is a Actiontec Q1000 with (QAQ002-31.20L.4) modem/router that talks to qwest.
Then I connect to a linksys router WRT54G2.
I connect directly to the linksys router with an ethernet cable, but my family connects to it wirelessly.

I ran a constant ping to my modem and to google, and on the random disconnect, the Actiontec Q1000 gets a huge 4000ms response time (but then it resumes normally), and I get ping timeouts to google. Windows 7 will say "no internet connection available". Not sure if it makes a difference, but I had google timeout 4 times during my constant pings.

Nobody else is connected when it does this random disconnects, so I'm not sure what's causing it. I've tried a lot of things, from changing and flushing my dns, connecting directly to the modem, turning off QoS/firewall settings, but nothing seems to work.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

IP addresses of are normally caused by one of the following.

1. DHCP Service not running.
2. Duplicate IP address on the network.
3. Bad NIC card drivers.
4. Defective NIC hardware.

1. Check Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. The DHCP Client service should be Started and its Startup Type should be Automatic.
2. Turn off ALL of the computers and other network connected devices, reboot the router, then restart all the computers and other network devices.
3. Check for upgraded drivers and/or reload the Network drivers.
4. Replace the Network Interface Card.

With “disconnects” you probably mean “switching off”, right?

On this virtual way it is not easy to say why this happen. What kind of work do you do?
I mean if notebook goes off for no apparent reason it could be due to overheating and critical hardware temperature.

Can you please do a small test? Start your notebook and enter BIOS settings. After doing this leave it for a while and let us know if notebook stays ON or switches OFF again.

Hi, I have a new X270 laptop running Win10 update 1703. When it is connected to power, it disconnects from our vpn every 10 minutes (almost to the second). The machine is running with the performance power policy and I did not find anything in there to indicate why the vpn gets disconnected. We have many users using the vpn and this is the only machine to exhibit this behavior. BUT, when the machine is running on battery, the problem goes away. The user of this machine is getting very frustrated and given that she is not local, onsite diagnostics are not easy. Any ideas what is going on with this. It is very bizarre. Let me know if more information is needed. Thanks. Rich.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 on a Acer Aspire 7535-5020 Laptop with a Atheros AR5B91 Wireless Network Adapter.

This is a dual boot with Windows 7 & I have no problems staying connected with Win 7 but every time I boot into Ubuntu I loose the wireless connection after 10 minutes or so. The time varies on how long it stays connected but once it disconnects the only way to reconnect is to reboot & then it auto connects & goes thru the cycle again.
If I connect via Ethernet I have no problem but this is a laptop so it would be nice to be able to use the wireless connection without having to keep on rebooting all the time.
Needless to say I don't use Ubuntu very often for that reason.

I've read on other forums, even the official Ubuntu forum of others having the same problem but I have not found a solution.

Anyone have any ideas on what is causing this to happen?

A:Ubuntu 9.10 wireless disconnects after about 15 minutes

Your best form of aid is going to be the ubuntuforum.

From a quick check; http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1226678

I would suggest following the instructions in post 2 of this thread; it seemed to work for others.

Your wireless card is known for being problematic with Linux installs. It's probably not the news you want to hear, but maybe a good search on those forums will help you on this occasion.

I have Comcast Digital Voice and Internet and am using an Arris TM502G cable modem with telephony. I am trying to connect it to my wireless router: Belkin f5d7230-4 version 6000.

I have had the router for several years, and it worked perfectly and consistently. Several months ago, I started using my Desktop computer without the router, connected directly to what I had at the time, a motorola standalone cable modem. Then I ordered Comcast Digital voice, and they replaced my motorola modem with the arris telephony modem. After a few weeks of using the arris directly connected to my desktop, I tried to set up the Belkin.

At first, the Belkin went for 1 or 2 days without needing a reset, but now it just loses the connection after a few minutes. However, I can use the Belkin router without it being connected to the modem, and all of my computers can see each other. I was even doing a lot of VNC over the Belkin, and it never once needed to be reset.

I have updated my router to the very latest firmware, version 8.01.21, and also reset to the default settings the router. Yet the problems persist. Is the WAN manager in the router broken, or is Comcast messing with me. I have cloned the WAN MAC address of the ethernet card in my desktop to the router.

Thanks in advance for any help.

A:Belkin Router Disconnects WAN after 2 minutes

You have already done all the standard things to try to get it working again. You could try the reset to factory default settings one more time, but it's time to be shopping for your next router.

I have a DSL line and up until yesterday I connected via a Netgear DG824M all-in-one box (Gateway, Router, DSL Modem, Wireless access point). It worked flawlessly. Yesterday I replaced it with a Netgear DG834G, basically the same gadget except it has 54 mbps wireless which is why I bought it.

The problem is that the new unit disconnects every 10 minutes, then quickly re-establishes the connection. The old unit stayed online 24/7. I keep getting these little popup messages from the tray and they're driving me bonkers.

My ISP doesn't require a login, and uses dynamic IP. It looks as if the disconnection occurs when the IP lease expires, at an interval of 10 minutes. Since the old DG824 didn't jump in and out on every renewal of the IP number, I don't understand why the new unit would...

How do I keep the connection alive? The periodic disconnection occurs no matter whether I'm eating bandwidth or sitting idle...

I connect my HP Envy laptop to an AT&T tablet hotspot in a rural location to connect to the internet.  The signal from the tower to hotspot is strong, but will instantaneously disconnect and reconnect about every 30 minutes or so.  During that time, my laptop disconnects and won't reconnect back to the hotspot on its own.  In order to connect to the hotspot again, I must turn off the hotspot and then turn it back on again.  That is the only way my laptop will connect to the hot spot again.  These are the issues:1.  The hotspot says it's broadcasting and sees my laptop even though my laptop doesn't see the hotspot and is broadcasting because my phone says it's still connected;2.  My phone doesn't get interrupted at all that I can tell when I connect to the hotspot through my phone;3.  Rebooting my laptop won't refresh the situation and allow my laptop to connect to the hotspot, it just says there is no internet connection;4.  The laptop never disconnects from my wifi at home. This happens over and over, all day every day while on vacation.  It seems that in the instant the hot spot disconnects from the tower my phone seaches and reconnects where my HP laptop doesn't do that search to reconnect.  Is there something I can turn on to have it search to reconnect after it's been disconnected?

I'm having a strange problem with my wireless internet that I just cannot figure out. I'm running Vista and it disconnects every 15 or so minutes, and sometimes within the same 7 minute period. I don't really know when it started because it only happened when I got back from college this summer. Every other computer in the house works fine. I've tried so many things on the net and have even replaced the router. Doubt it would be a virus. Oh, it also works on any other network fine, on campus and even my neighbor's. I am baffled , but I've provided some information here

Thank you so much!

I'm disconnecting every 30s-5minutes, and when i click on the troubleshoot problems button it says the default gateway is not available, and then it restarts the modem and it then works.
I am using comcast's default modem/router all in one combo.

I made sure my power settings weren't turning off the adapter.

I attached my ipconfig/all.

Any help is appreciated.

I've entered in the password on the hotels website, so I have access. It stays up for a couple of minutes, and then drops completely. There is more than one open, so it's not that it goes out of range. After a few minutes, my computer just stops searching.
The only way I can get it to work(for about 30 seconds) is when I disable the drivers.

A:At a hotel, wifi connects for a few minutes and then disconnects.

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Usually at a Hotel there are several Wi-Fi Users, if the Hotel has several Access Points it will help a lot. The higher the bandwidth they have the better connection you'll have and favorable for the Hotel guests. Any particular time that you get disconnect more? How's your connection late at night?

this is my 1st time posting here
I was referred here from some other forum, heard good stuff about this place

so I was wondering if ANYONE can help me or know what's my problem

OK my problem is that my DSL connection disconnects every 5-10 minutes, the time varies WILDLY on the times it stays on & the time it keeps disconcerting me

some basic info:

-I have Windows XP
-I tried taking out the phone line so it wasn't getting any extra interferance
-my DSL is from ISPWest & the modem is Zoom ADSL X3
-I do NOT have a router & connecting the modem directly to my computer
-I called & the company & the network was not down
-I tired using different browsers (firefox, IE, Mozilla)
-when I turned it off & switched to my 56k AOL connection, it never happens
-I checked for spyware & for Viruses
-I ALSO used my DSL Modem on my videogame system, Xbox & the connection problems were the same, online for few minutes & then disconnects, then connects for a while & then disconnects

so the first few weeks the DSL was normal
& all of a sudden I get disconnected, a message said "operation timed out/site could not be found"

it would not connect to any link & then all of a sudden 5 minutes later it connected with no warning
it kept on doing this non-stop
I tired restarting my computer, restarting my DSL modem etc etc didn't work

THE NEXT day I tried again & this time the connection worked fine for 4 hours

I have a Linksys Wireless-G router and a Linksys PCI card. My router is in another room, probably 30 or so feet away. Everything seems to work fine BUT the internet will disconnect for like a second, every 5 minutes or so. It's like the card loses the signal, not the router. Or I suppose it could be the router. There is a cordless phone, but it's in a different room from the router and barely used.

This is an extremely frustrating problem as I play online games and a disconnect like this all the time is totally unacceptable. I have tried switching channels through the router setup page and tinkering here and there with my network options, but I am not very knowledgeable about such things. I even bought larger antennas for the router but it doesn't help anything.

I read about this problem posted here a while back but the thread was pretty dead. Guy had the exact same equipment and problem that I did. But the problem was never solved or so I assume by the lack of replies or followups.

If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. I don't want to spend another $100 for long cabling after I spent all of this money before to avoid the cables in the first place. Thanks.

Hello all,

So, I have a Toshiba Satellite computer that's a couple years old, but runs fine other than the internet.

This problem started happening around a month ago, for a couple days it'll just disconnect and reconnect to the internet randomly ( Every couple minutes or so) But after a couple days, it usually just stops. Recently it started doing it again, and I've searched and searched online and tried literally everything I can find but nothing seems to work. We've updated drivers, tried restore points, changed the driver settings to maximum performance in the power management settings, but to no avail.

We're running on Windows 7, have intel-Centrino Winax adapters. It isn't the router either btw, as we have another laptop that stays connected perfectly fine. Tried toshiba support, but since the warranty is out they wanna charge us, but the tech guy did say something about changing settings, just not sure what settings he was talking abou

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and any more info you need just let me know how to get to it and I'll post. Thanks!

Hi I have also been experinsing these problems. I am a video game player as well and whenever I try to play on my laptop my internet disconnects. But all my other devices that use wifi work fine. Also there is nothing wrong with my computer because it works fine on other networks such as my schools. I recently moved and am now using a different internet provider ,centerylink. I think I have to change my modem channel but centurylinks website were you change modem settings is a scam. The website does not work and my parents think theres something wrong with my computer and are refusing to change internet service providers. So I am wondering how If I can change modem channels a different way.

Hi, You might have another wifi signal very close to your house that is on 'your' channel, it happens.
You can only move your channel to one of three different frequencies, that is the lowest, the middle or the highest one. So say your current channel is 6, there is no point going to 7, it's still too close.
If the 'other' problem wifi channel near you is say '1' then you should try to go to the other end of the range.
You change your WiFi channel in your router, then your laptop will find it.
You don't need a website to do that, it's between your laptop and your router.
You make the changes through any web browser, and the details will probably be on the label of your router.
But this might not the problem, although it's a fairly easy one to 'fix' if it is.

Hey guys,

As soon as I connect my VPN it disconnects the internet. I'm using a desktop with windows 7, connected to wifi via a Netgear 4600 router. I have two internet connections, one of which is not connected to the router, both connections are affected. Used to work fine and I don't think I have done anything that would cause this. I already looked online and didn't find anything that was helpful.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to TSF.

We will take a look at your system for malware, but it's unlikely the cause of loss of connection. If we can't locate a problem, you will be encouraged to ask for advice in the Networking forum, here at TSF.

Download HiJackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HiJackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose [Do a system scan and save a logfile].
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit [Scan] and then click on [Save log].
3. Post the HiJackThis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HiJackThis since they may be harmless.
