Solved: "Your Windows host file was hijacked. It is recommended to restore host file."

Q: Solved: "Your Windows host file was hijacked. It is recommended to restore host file."

I am using Windows XP home edition.

I posted this in the wrong forum, a few days ago: and was advised to post it here,
with a new hjt log. They did say that I had more serious problems than just my host file needing to be restored. They also said that there didn't seem to be a firewall. How can I find out if I'm using Window's firewall?

Arovax Shield popped up a message: "Warning: Your Windows host file was hijacked. It is recommended to restore host file."

1. Now I can't use my anti-virus program, because it stalls (freezes) before it finishes.

2. I can't use Panda or any other on-line scanner, because it too freezes before it can

3. I can't shutdown my computer - not even cold boot! I have to completely unplug it!

4. I can't do a system restore, to a previous date. (I've tried several previous dates).

I have no idea how to restore the host file, and I have no idea how it was hijacked.

Here is my new HJT log: (I hope it will be of some help)

Preferred Solution: Solved: "Your Windows host file was hijacked. It is recommended to restore host file."

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Thanks for your advice. I've transferred my problem to "Malware Removal & Hijack This Logs", as you suggested.

How do I delete this thread??

A:"Your Windows host file was hijacked. It is recommended to restore host file."

Try deleting or renaming the Hosts file.
It will be recreated, so no harm to try.
It's at:
It's named "HOSTS- no extension.
You can open this file with Notepad of you're curious enough to see what it says.

The "hosts" file is used to connect a site "name" to it's internet address to be able to access the site on the web. However if a site name is preceded by the internet address your computer will not access the site because the address is your computer itself and therefore NO address is found to access
Now some antispyware will write to your "hosts" file when it finds a tracker file or other malicious type file. The reason for this is that if the file causes, during your online browsing, your computer to try to access a tracking or malicious site it cannot do it. The reason is as I said previously because the site name is found in the "hosts" file with the address

You also can put entries in your "host" file that will deny access to a site you do not want your computer to be able to access. How to write this in the "host" file is shown at the beginning of the "host" file contents.

If your "host" file is empty nothing is denied to your computer to access. And this the way most "host" files are loaded. The "hosts" file I'm talking about is the "hosts" file inside the C:/windows/system32/drivers/etc/ folder on your computer. There are other files in this folder also but the "hosts" file is the one that does the job. You can open it with Notepad or Wordpad.

I receive email postings from the Kim Kommando web site and someone inquired that they were having problems downloading a Host file. As I read the post it appears that a Host file helps malicious items that end up in your registery from recreating. Kim gave instructions about placing a Host shortcut on your desk top. I am wondering specifically what a Host file does, is it a good thing to have or is it just another version of Spybot or AdAware Personal SE?

I am trying to access the internet wireless on my home network using a COMPAQ Presario V6000 running Windows Vista Home Premium. I know my network is fine beacuse other computers and an IPad are having no trouble accessing the internet wirelessly using our home network. This laptop previously accessed the internet just fine until I installed a new router (DLink, Model DIR 628) and since I installed the new router I haven't been able to access the web using this laptop wirelessly.

When I look at the 'Network and Sharing Centre' it looks like my wireless laptop connection to my home network is OK but there is a red 'X' between my home network and the internet, even though I am accessing the intenet just fine using other computers in the house. My laptop seems to be connected to the home network but it won't let me connect to the web... can anyone help me figure this out?

Recently, I started noticing ads which poppped up in the bottom right corner of my screen while browsing the internet. It was an annoyance and I didn't know what had caused those ads to appear but I thought I would be able to remove them. I had been noticing these ads for several weeks prior to now. Subsequently, on another evening my PC began giving me messages which indicated that the HDD was failing and that I should scan the the drive and restart the machine to prevent data loss. At that moment, I knew that my machine was infected and I began corrective actions. I ran Avira and it identified a trojan called Crypt.ZPACK.Gen8. I removed this. Then I ran MBAM and it identified two other malware/trojan items and removed them. OK. So now it appears that the trojans have been removed, but the ads still appear. Checking further, I found a forum item on this site about the same issue entitled "Recommended for You" and using that information determined that my hosts file had been hijacked. My problem now is that I cannot gain access to the hosts file to delete the file and fix it. I tried the advanced settings found in the TOOLS>FOLDER OPTIONS>VIEW in Explorer to make the hosts file visible by showing hidden files and the other for unhiding system files. This process makes the other icons in the c:Windows\System 32\Drivers\ETC folder visible. The other icons in that folder are full color while the hosts icon is still shaded. I can open the sample... Hi all
Previously the  "Save Picture"  box would put a web generated title in the box and automatically selected JPEG.  Now the title box reads "untitled" and the only file options offered are "png" & "bmp"

Please note that a similar post has appeared, but the solution did not match the fault.  I'm seeking to restore the automatic response to save picture, that might have been upset by antivirus clean-up programme.

Thank youin advance for considering my problem

Recently Upgraded: Running Windows 7, 64-bit on MSI Z97 ATX board with Intel Core i7-4790K processor. I installed the drivers from the CD that came with the board from MSI.

My usage is strictly internet, e-mail and office applications. Occasional other usage is to connect additional hard disk via internal SATA and scanning for viruses and malicious programs. I do not overclock or play games.

I am trying to determine whether there is any real benefit to keeping the following:
"Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver". I thought USB3 drivers were already in W7 so why do I need this driver from Intel? I've read this; but, it never gets into whether it is an essential program or what functionality might be lost if I uninstall it.
"MSI Super Charger". I've read this; but, I can't see any real benefit, The only thing I charge from this computer is my phone and I am very well satisfied with its charging time.

Hey guys,

Ever since I did a clean install about a month and half ago, I've been receiving the "Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close" error. I've done massive amounts of Google searches, reading, trying alleged fixes but nothing has worked.

My virus software, Avast!, has also detected numerous viruses stemming from the svchost.exe process. Whether this has something to do with it or not I have no certain idea. A few sites have said they're related in some way but I'm not too sure.

This, as you can imagine, has been getting very annoying, especially with the upcoming release of Black Ops looming and my computer not being up to scratch to play it.

So far, I have tried solutions such as Windows updates, Virus, Adware, Malware, etc. scans, scripting and the such but nothing has yet fixed my problem.

If you can give me a solution that works, I would be very grateful.

PS: If you need logs such as those from HijackThis, I can supply those as well.

There doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason for it... it just arbitrarily shows up from time to time. It's not related to booting Vista, I don't think, b/c it'll pop up occasionally during the same session.

A friend at work experienced the same problem on his PC. Turns out he had a corrupt indexing file. You could try posting the details from Event Viewer, if that is possible. I wouldn't be able to help you interpreting them, but maybe some of the more experienced members could.

Have you tried disabling Windows Search? I did this on my friend's PC as a temporary measure . Got IE working, although searches were rather slow. It isn't a solution, but it could afford you a temporary -- albeit inconvenient -- workaround.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Stick around, though, and wait for inputs from the more knowledgeable members.

Today, I decide to take a break from my Fedora partition and actually load into windows. It had been a day or two and i knew my thunderbird would be bursting at the seams with emails.

I boot.
It chugs a bit more than usual.
I get an error message about 5 minutes after I boot.
"Host process for windows services stopped working and was closed"
It said more than that, but it was all trivial information about what might have caused it and whatnot- then it popped up a windows help browser suggesting i run windows updates, because apparently every problem can be fixed with an update (it wasn't).

This shows up every time I boot. It doesn't really seem to be affecting anything (yet), but it still perturbs me and all the things I find on google seem to be particularly vague in the direction of something in the event log without telling me exactly why i'm there or what I'm looking for, let alone how to go about it.

So, what do I do to alleviate myself of this little dialog at login?

Hello Sean, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Not sure how you did that, but you should be able to do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before you did to undo and fix this.

Hope this helps,

My external HD will not eject. In Vista it ejects fine. I west to customize the tray icons and saw this. The eject button listed as "Windows Host Process" What is up with this and is this why it will not eject? I have never seen this before and wonder if it's correct or a bug. I went back a few minutes later and it was showing the icon as normal but still will not eject properly.

is there any reason why this would be here? It is set to show only notifications. What notifications would taskhost make?

Well, I feel pretty stupid right now.

Recently I was moving a bunch of files onto a new hard drive, when my system would try to load the thumbnails of some, I would get the error in the subject, and so assumed the file was corrupt, and deleted it, later downloading a fresh copy.

The fresh copies however give me the same error, which of course restarts explorer. The files themselves have worked before, and are from reasonably reputable sites, I doubt they're the issue.

It occurred to me that when this error would occur, the little Matroska symbol would be flashing like mad, and after posting on another forum, decided my best bet would be to uninstall the codec pack with Matroska.

Unfortunately, I believe I did the exact opposite of what I wanted to. I may have uninstalled every codec except ffdshow, matroska, haali splitter, etc, as the error was still present after the restart, but the folder was empty.

The only difference seems to be that explorer just restarts without the error message.

A:Windows A Minor Variation of "host process (Rundll32) has stopped working"

Exactly what are the system specs and do you have a Vista disk.

You may need to run the system file checker and it could require the system disk.

In regards to your immediate issue I would recommend doing a system restore to a day prior to this event so that it can be undone and then we can look into it further and possibly determine what the issue is.

I am running a host machine of WinXP with a virtual PC of Win95 installed in it. The Virtual machine addition is done so it can share files with my host pc, but it seems that dll files can't be shared, it simply can't "see" or detect the dll files in my host pc.

For example: I have a folder in my host PC, inside are files of different types, including dll files. After sharing it to my virtual pc, my virtual pc can use all the files normaly except those of dll file types, it simply DISAPEARED in the shared folder.

I am now wondering what is the crux of this matter now.

Thanks to anybody who can share me a pointer.

A:[SOLVED] My virtual PC can't "see" dll files in host PC?

Hi aslkdzm !

Windows 95 hides system files by default. Run Windows explorer => view => options. In the view tab tick "show all files" and untick "hide ms-dos file extensions" then click on apply.

If you have other problems on the Win 95 virtual machine you should look for help on win 95 boards, we don't support that OS anymore here on TSF.

I marked your other thread as solved, you can do it yourself using the thread tools at the top of the thread.

My Sony VAIO laptop computer is not feeling well.

I have Windows Vista 32 bit, which i have (presumably) upgraded to at least SP1.
As for Service Pack 2, i can not install it due to the problems i am about to describe.

When i first log into Windows, i log in as my only user account (named "Lizard"), which is also my administrator account.

Among the very first messages i get is an error from RunDLL stating that "Error loading C:\Users\Lizard\AppData\Local\Temp\ddcAsqpO.dll".

After closing that alert - everything works just fine for between 2 to 20 minutes.

Then, i get another message that says "Host process for Windows services stopped working and was closed.".
After this error message, my beloved laptop goes through a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde tranformation.
Everything related to Windows Explorer goes in slow motion, if i - for instance, want to save an image i have created - i have to wait for several minutes before the computer unfreezes. That is, if i'm lucky enough to get it back in the first place.
I have tried to get relevant updates for Windows; apart from Service Pack 2 i have also tried to use Windows Update, but i get an error message during the download procedure and then nothing is installed.

The same applies to Spyware Doctor, a program that used to run regular scans of my computer earlier, but now has been paralyzed by something.
Beeing a happy amateur, my investigations have produced very little.

I have, however... Read more

"Windows Audio has stopped working" flashes quickly, followed by:

Then, if I right click on the small volume icon in the bottom right by the time, go to "Playback Devices" I get the following message:

"This computer cannot play audio because the Windows Audio Service is not enabled.

Would you like to enable the Windows Audio Service?"

I click yes and the audio works again, but even after this it still acts funny.

Things of note:Sometimes the Volume Up/Down/Off buttons on my keyboard work, and sometimes they do not.
After this problem occurs and I restart it by going to Playback Devices, the audio cannot be turned up/down in Windows Media Player. I must manually adjust my (external) speakers.
I'm using Windows Media Player because Songbird and iTunes seem to freeze up every time I try to play music through them

can anyone help?

A:Windows failed to find the well known host "www.microsoft.com" using DNS.

You are unable to utilize DNS services. These are usually provided by the ISP and are implemented in the router. You may have inadvertantly blocked these if you added a second wireless router after your ISPs router/modem. Or you could simply have had a network outage. Turn off both the reouter/modem and the router for at least one minute and then turn them both back on. Often that "fixes" transient connectivity issues.

Recently I installed 2GB Crucial RAM (2x1gb) (I had 2x512mb before) and soon after this problem, along with a few others have started happening, for example, i can hear the hard drive clicking and whirring a lot louder than usual - which makes me think that i may have knocked it or something when i put it upside down (?), anyway, on the Problems Report and Solutions page, it says to look in event viewer, and i found the culprit file being C:\Windows\Prefetch\WINRAR.EXE-BA8CDB31.pf
I did try putting the old ram back in to see if it would have any effect - but it definately wasnt the ram.
So what can I do?? can I delete this file to stop it trying to access it? (I no that will probably be a very stupid thing to do) or is there some way i can fix it? - or do you think my hard drive may be damaged?!

Anyway any help would be much apprecciated.

Scan For Missing/Corrupt System Files...

Windows XP comes with a wonderful tool called System File Checker (SFC)

To Do This:
Click Start menu, and then click the Run icon.
In the small box that Opens, type the three letters: cmd then click the OK button.
In the command prompt window that just opened (a black background and white text), type the following command:
SFC /scannow
And then click OK
You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to run SFC..
You will need your Windows XP CD during this procedure if SFC needs to get an original file. Please remember that Windows XP can have multiple instances of a .DLL file and remember which version is for which program.
I have been asked if it is possible to have a "progress meter" show when SFC runs... This is the registry hack you need. PLEASE do not go messing with your registry if you do NOT know what you are doing!

My name is Ken and I appreciate any and all advice in advance. I dispense a lot of advice on hi-fi boards, but I know just enough about computers to defer to the experts. Feel free to slap me around and teach me a lesson if I appear stupid or violate any board etiquette. I can take it.

Here's the deal:

My computer suddenly lost all of its cookies for sites I frequent.

Then, right after that happened, Norton told me that it stopped some malicious code.

I started getting a "Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services..." error and my computer started stalling when I went into Microsoft Word or IE.

I updated Windows, updated my HP software (based on a quick Google search), and scanned my entire system with Norton.

Norton says it killed the "Downloader" virus.

My computer is still bringing up the "Generic..." message and when I try to unmute my volume button, it says there are "no active mixer devices available." I'm just waiting for my computer to freeze up again.

Dunno what happened, but out of nowhere the "big/stylized icon" (don't know how it's called) from my Photoshop files disappeared, went to the "bad/old/small format".

Only the Photoshop files. Check the image

Left, the Adobe Illustrator icon is fine, big/stylized, we can see it all, but on the right (marked red by me) the Photoshop is wrong. How can I restore to the default "big/stylized format" from Adobe?

I already tried rebuild the icon cache, deleted, restored, did a lot of these things, the icon remains the "bad format", how can I change to the good "big/stylized icon" format?

A:Restore "big icon" file on Windows 7

The icons look the same size to me but you might right-click the Photoshop icon and choose Properties. There's choices to open the Folder containing the .exe file the Shortcut refers to and/or to change the icon which should give you something more relevant to choose. If that doesn't work could be PS needs reinstalling.

I am getting the following error when moving files on the same drive or from one to another:

"Error Moving File or Folder
Cannot remove folder (insert folder name here): The directory is not empty."

This is fairly common (once or twice a month) and it occurs usually with folders containing many subfolders when being moved by explorer gui "Move the selected items", or ctrl-x, ctrl-v . Repeated attempts through the same process seems to move the folders, but the errors increase as the concentration of stubborn folders increases.

There are no event viewer logs corresponding to these errors. (eventvwr.msc: system, or application)

I would have thought this would be a common problem, but extensive searches came up with nothing... so either it is rare, untroubling to others, extremely easy to fix, or my search queries suck. =)
I am going to run Checkdisk to make sure all is well there, and I will repost the likely failure.

As it is clear that your computer does have virus infections, first thing you must be doing is to do a scan of your computer.

The best software which I can advice is Malwarebyte Antimalware, there is free version of it availiable over internet.
here is the link for downloading the same http://malwarebytes.org/.
download and install it. later do a quick scan and remove all infections that you find using the scan. Then at the end you will get a log about the scan. Please do post that link in order to look in this matter more precisely.
But most of your issues would be fixed with that scan itself,

Also one more suggetion since you are having some website redirections, it might be an issue of "hosts" file corruption.
Some nasty irus do corrupt those files. inorder to give more info on that tell about your computer and also the Operating system that you are using.

how can I change this?

Some background - this may not be the issue I need to solve at the end of the day:

I believe the location is causing crashes, since I blew up lots of Library registry values (in an attempt to remove them from the OS), and I think it defaults to the library page.

eg, 2shared - file upload and sharing
[edit: stupid editor auto href'd the text... bah]

crashes IE and Firefox (not Chrome for some reason... possibly because it uses its own code?) when I click the browse button (same for any "browse" button that spawns a native find-your-file thing).

It may be something else, but anyway...

edit: If I disable "Expand to Current Folder" in Win Explorer, the crash does not occur. So perhaps it is trying to expand to a folder that is broken?
I want to keep "Expand to Current Folder" on, though, as I like the feature.

A:Default "Browse for file" location in web browser "choose file" box

Hello Silmeria,

It may be best to do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before you blew up the registry to see if that may sort this for you. Afterwards, you could use the tutorial below instead to remove libraries without blowing up the registry like that.

Hello. I am using a POWER USER account, Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 /w all the latest patches availible via microsoft update. I was trying to create a .zip file of a folder within the primary directroy of a backup hard drive I use.

For Example:
D:\stuff - I wanted to make a zipfile of the folder "stuff."

Then I get the following error "Cannot Create Output File."

However, if I move the folder to the destop or a subdirectory i.e. stuff/more stuff, then the .zip file is created with no problems.

Also, because user accounts [at least in my experience] have a tendency to decay, I created a freash power user account and the same problem persist.

Is this a standard security feature for power user accounts? Is there anyway I can "disable" it if it is?

Hiya, I could use a little help resolving what should be a simple problem. It's really a long story, but to skip to the important part, I'll just recount this little tale:

I wanted to delete some files off of an old external hard drive to make space for some new stuff. It didn't matter, since the files I was deleting had been long since copied to a new drive. However, Vista, in its infinite wisdom, told me I couldn't delete the files, and it was for my own good. I politely said, "okay, Vista! Thanks for keeping me honest!"

But then I muttered, "I already have a mother" under my breath, and proceeded to go behind Vista's back and turn off User Account Control so I could delete the files anyway. Well, I knew that wasn't the best idea, so I immediately turned UAC back on afterwards, but it was too late. Vista caught me, and after the second restart, smote me with a problem I'd seen once before: nearly every program on my computer was said to have been closed after it "encountered a problem" or some nonsense, and when restarted again, the disk checker was run, found numerous problems, and did whatever it had to do to go about fixing them all.

Now I'm not sure what all that was about, because everything seems to be running okay now, save for one minor thing. That little "click" sound you get when navigating windows explorer was nowhere to be heard. I tried another restart and another disk check, b... Read more

This will help block popup ads. My question is my host file ends in the extensionlike this HOSTS.SAM, Is .sam a valid extension in order for my entry to work?

A:Solved: Host file

hosts. should just be called hosts nothing else.

get the hosts file from here.

put it into C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc, for xp and w2k or

C:\windows\ for 95,98 and ME

ie-spyad.Puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected

when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

With past Windows OS's the host file has been a long list of IPs. My Windows 7 host file is as follows....
# Copyright (c) 1993-2004 Microsoft Corp.
# AutoGenerated by Microsoft (R) Malware Protection Engine.
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
# For example:
# rhino.acme.com # source server
# x.acme.com # x client host localhost
::1 localhost
That is it! Am I missing something?

A:Solved: the host file

Nope, that's it. A "default" hosts file.

You may have installed a program such as Spybot S&D, which modifies the hosts file to include many known "malware" websites, and points them back to your local computer (, to keep your computer safe, but the one you have is good enough. If you try to go to a website and it's not in yours hosts file, then your PC will use DNS to look up the IP address.
