laptop boots to blank screen, safe mode wont work

Q: laptop boots to blank screen, safe mode wont work

I have an HP G72 laptop running windows 7 home premium. yesterday when i was on the computer all of a sudden screen turned white and the only button that would work was power button. i held it down and shut off computer. when i turned it back on it goes through the usual boot process up to where i have to enter password for user profile. when i hit enter it will start showing my desktop icons like normal and then just go blank again. when i try to boot in safe mode it goes through the same process except when it starts displaying desktop icons it stops and automatically shuts back down and trys to boot up again in normal mode. if i try to restore it back to a restore point it says there are none available. Any input on what might be causing these problems will be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You HDD may be failing. On another computer download the ISO image for Seatools in my signature. Burn the image to CD using IMGBurn also in my signature. Boot off of the newly created CD and run the Short and Long tests on the drive. If either tests fails, the HDD needs to be replaced.

Hi Guys

I have looked at the forums for any previous probs like this but maybe i can't see the woods for ther trees??

I have a laptop, which was working fine. It now wont boot. I get the options to Boot to last Know configuration - this desn't work, just brings me back to same page.
Boot into Safe MOde With Networking or Safe mode - these two get a little further. A list of drivers being installed appears, but then it sticks and does nothing!!

System restore does not work

Sometimes a blue screen pops up With a *** STOP error message and then it sticks on that.

ANy suggestions about where to start with this......i have a hammer and a blowtorch if that will help

Thanks for any help
Neil

A:Laptop Boots to a blue screen OR sticks before Safe Mode

Be sure to let it stay on the driver screen when loading in Safe Mode for a couple of minutes at least, before giving up.

When you get the Blue Screen, note the Stop message parameters, and especially the driver file if mentioned.

Do you have an XP CD that can be used for a reinstall?

Hi folks!Unfortunately, my 2 year old pushed some buttons on my Lenovo B590 laptop and something isn't right. Upon start up (Windows 7 64), I get a black screen with a moving cursor. Ctrl+alt+del doesn't bring up the task manager.I double checked the boot order in BIOS and that looks OK.Restarting in Safe mode works.I also updated the video drivers, and (strangely) I was able to restart in normal and everything looked fine. However, when I restarted again after that, I was back to the black screen in Normal.I've been Googling all morning, and done what I've found. If anyone else has any other suggestions, I'd be grateful for them. And if you have any questions for me, please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks!

Hello, I've got a new laptop (got it on April 10th) It's a dell, running windows 7 64 bit. A few weeks after I got it, I installed Adobe Acrobat reader and 2 days later, when I tried to bring the computer up, it hung up while starting. I started in safe mode, and after a few unsuccessful attempts at restarting in regular mode, I did a system restore back to before the installation of adobe. This didn't seem to solve the problem, so I restored back to before the most recent windows update. The computer worked fine with no issues until today.

Here's the twist, I had convinced myself that Acrobat couldn't have been the cause, and that I would like to be able to see pdfs again, so I re-downloaded it Sunday night. Today, tried to bring up the webcam (puppy cam for while we're at work) and it wouldn't come up. Rebooted and nothing but safe mode, hangs in start up, just before the login screen again. Before I did another system restore and started over again, I wanted to see if anyone had insights.

I've downloaded nothing other than firefox and acrobat, otherwise everything is just like it was out of the box. Don't know if this is at all related, but I'd also had a problem with windows explorer quitting and having to reboot, but that seems to have gone away. Any ideas?

- Last night I instaled 4 themes for my Windows 7, and right before going to sleep I restarted my Laptop, and when it came up, the screen started blinking with the Loading screen and a black screen and it did this until it shutted off, i turned it on again, and it did the same, but it didn't turned off it just stood blinking, then I tried to go in Safe Mode, It worked, As soon as i got in the first thing i did was delete the Themes to see if my problem was solved, but it didn't.

A:My laptop only boots in safe mode Help!

Hi! Karulapara, welcome to 7F

Restart your machine while tapping the F8 key when a menu appears select 'Last known good configuration' and try that. This will load the last normal session you had.

If that does not work, get back into Safe Mode, and click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
Select a date that you know the computer was running and the computer will revert to the state it was in at that time.

Having a problem with my sister's XP system. It boots up fine normally, then Norton pops up a warning that trojan.vundo has been found and can't be automatically removed. Went to the Symantec site and downloaded their manual remover and followed the instructions... restore off, disconnect from the net, etc. The scanner remover runs, and does locate a few files that it says are suspicious, then pops up at the end and says that trojan.vundo has not been found. The warning message never disappears from the screen at any time. I then tried to boot the computer in safe mode to attempt the same scan/remove.

This is where my real problem occurs, the safe mode prompts all work as advertised, eventually reaching the welcome screen with a default graphics driver. I select ANY username and the system completes booting into a safe mode window, complete with the words "Safe Mode" in all four corners... and absolutely nothing else. It's a totally black screen. No icons, No start button, No nothing. The mouse navigates, but no amount of clicking or double clicking does anything. I can ctrl-alt-del and produce the task manager. I can tab between the applications, processes, networking and such, and have to eventually use the task manager to either log off, exit windows or restart the computer.

At this point, I'm more concerned about the safe mode failure than I am the trojan. I can solve that problem with one of several scanners that I've downloaded, but ... Read more

Windows appears to load normally until reaching the logon screen at which point 2 quick cmd windows flash on the screen and i'm left with a cursor and a plain blue screen.

No access to task manager through ctrl+alt+del.

I was thinking it's a video card problem until i plugged in an external monitor and saw a windows error box pop up saying that the program running requires that you not be on battery power.

Pulled the drive and scanned with avast and malwarebytes which found nothing.

Inserted Vista DVD but the repair function is only able to find the HP Restore partition and is unable to locate any backups.

The system runs "mini XP" from Hirens Boot without a problem, but no diagnostics that i ran have been able to find any issues...

Ideas?

Hi guys,

I'm new here and so, a big hello to all you "veterans" on this site. I hope to learn from you guys as I go along.

So here is my problem:-

My laptop started up in safe mode randomly and just went along. I tried to do a System Restore but then it shut down suddenly. I booted it up again and this time, the laptop lasted shorter than usual. I have also tried other options, like "Last Known Good Configuration" and "Startup Repair".

When I click on "Startup Windows Normally", it still goes into safe mode. I've tried doing a few things in safe mode and even that does not work. I tried going into Device Manager etc and there is no time to do anything as the laptop just dies off.

Methinks that it could be a hardware problem but has anyone had this problem before? If so, how did you guys get around to solving it?

All help will be much appreciated. Thanks for your time guys.

Hello All,

As of this morning my PC (running XP Pro SP3) hangs at the Welcome screen. I am able to type in my password (and hear the log on sound) but the welcome screen stays and the OS never loads. It loaded once (on about the tenth attempt) but I believe "explorer.exe" did not; I had blue screen on my start bar, quick launches and system tray, could not use CTRL+ALT+DEL or SUPER+R to run a command, and could not load any shortcuts from my desktop.

I am able to boot into Safe Mode (standard, with Networking and with Command Prompt) without a problem. I have attempted reinstalling my Chipset and VGA drivers to no avail. I have also run Malware and Spyware Doctor scans and show no issues.

My login screen is customized from Tune Up Utilities 2012; however I cannot uninstall the program from safe mode. Additionally, though my boot and welcome screen are custom, they both run when I boot into safe mode, which, as mentioned, I can do without incident.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

A couple days ago, I clicked to watch video and screen came up and everything froze up. So, I rebooted computer. It boots to this screen every time. None of the safe mode options works. One time, it said I was missing WINDOWS/SYSTEM/system32/CONFIG . This is a laptop and the CD drive does not work. I have tried a external CD drive to recovery and it will not boot off this CD. Also, I have tried to boot Ultimate Boot Disk and this will not work.

Any Suggestions? I would believe my files are still on the drive but the Windows files need to be reloaded.

Please advise as soon as possible. Thank you again for your immediate help because it would be greatly appreciated.

In addition, I have tried changing BIO settings and Have restored to default.

Thanks again .

Without a working cd drive or a bootable external cd drive I don't know of any way this can be repaired. Do you have access to another cd drive that would fit into the laptop temporarily (borrow)? Is the BIOS set to boot from CD first in the Boot Order?

Hi

I'm in a real mess since Lavasoft AdAware crashed my windows 7 home premium edit. 64bit after its 1st initial mandatory reboot. Everything is frozen, nothing can be clicked on or done in any way, shape or form. Even 'Esc' and 'Ctrl-Alt-Del wont work. PC must be shutdown manually. It also wont uninstall in safe mode. Once in safe mode the 1st time I got windows telling me that it cant uninstall this software in safe mode (this was done by its own uninstaller, and by the windows one, and by the Revo Pro uninstaller.) the 2nd time (reboot) it told me it wasnt installed properly. the 3d time it can't install in safe mode again. What now please? Anyone have an idea?

Thank you

A:Lavasoft AdAware crashed win7-Ctrl-alt-del wont work & it wont uninstall in safe mode

Sorry solved it. I'll write the answer should anyone need it someday. I believe my solution can help for other similar cases besides Ad-Aware.
A minute after I posted this a thought came to mind: Go into safe Mode and use msconfig.exe. So I ran it and unchecked everything to do with Ad-Aware. TO be even more sure I checked off not to run also other things that I knew would not be needed like anything to do with Apple, or Adobe. Afterwhich, doing a proper reboot Windows did actually start normally--no crash and I was able to uninstall it. Slowly I put back other services and start-up items and all is working fine now--so far at least ;-) Thanks for those who took a look and I hope it will help some people in the future.

Hey, I was asked by a family member to clean out their laptop, so I went ahead and downloaded malwarebytes, ccleaner and a new antivirus. Then I turned on safemode and restarted the pc.
Now the laptop starts up and goes to the windows loading bar. As soon as its done loading the screen goes black but I can see and move the mouse cursor. A few seconds after that the pc restarts. Over and over again.

Useless info:

I interrupted the process and then I was asked if I wanted to restore the pc to a earlier time. After doing that, it booted into safemode. I cleaned out the pc (put a lot of work into it etc). I turned off safemode and booted it up regulary. For some reason I couldnt install the new antivirus but the old one was deleted (not an issue for this thread). Since i was in safe mode before I figured to fix the antivirus problem i will boot it into safemode again.Click to expand...

Now Im stuck again but this time, restoring it doesnt help, I cant do a full system restore because there is no backup image and the data on the laptop is important.
Startup repair doesnt help.
I figure that I only need to be able to turn off safemode somehow. Is there any way of fixing this?
Thanks in advance, I registered on this forum because of this problem and I will try and return the favor in other threads.

Right now, everytime I start up the laptop, it goes to systemrestore.

I'd like to get to the window where it asks me how I want to boot the system. ("Boot Windows with the last working settings" or something like that). I know that this should boot it without safemode, but i don't know how to get there...

I think this is where I should be posting this. I'm booting fine in safe mode, and it will be ok booting normal until I get to the desktop. Once I get there, I can see my desktop but it has lines across it and I'm not sure what's happening.

Hi everyone,

I have a all in one DELL Insprion ONE2320, Intel 5 64b OS.  My computer started getting slow and soon even Malwarebytes wouldn't even run.  I'm in Canada and use McAfee supplied by my internet provider Shaw.

I successfully booted in safe mode (no networking) and successfully ran a scan using Malwarebytes.  The program found over 1000 files which Malwarebytes has quarantined.
I believe the next step to run an antivirus to check for viruses.

I tired to boot into safe mode with networking...but I get this...loads WIndows 7, I choose my login icon and enter my password, then I get a black screen with a mouse cursor.
I also booted into normal windows mode...I choose my login icon and enter my password...I get a black screen with a mouse cursor.

I have tried to download an antivirus program to scan for viruses but all my downloads require an active internet connection to complete the installation.
In safemode, I try to run McAfee AV, the program starts but the program just hangs (so I'm assuming I have a virus that prevents programs from launching?)

Can anyone suggest next steps?

Thanks,
Ed

I’m working on my daughter’s MSI A6200 laptop running Windows 7, Home Premium, 64 bit.

The computer was freezing up from time to time and then stopped working. It hung up when I tried to reboot. I went to safe mode, used msconfig to turn off all system services and start-up programs, rebooted but no change. Rebooted in safe mode with networking but all network connections are gone, the wireless adapter seems disabled but it does show in Device Manager. Interestingly, the “sleep” light on the laptop is lit. I opened control panel and clicked on Power options but nothing happens.

I downloaded Norton’s emergency bootable recovery tool and booted via a USB drive. I scanned the laptop and it found a virus but I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t write down what it was (I foolishly thought I was done). I ran it again and it came up with nothing. There may be a log somewhere but I couldn’t find it this morning. I have a feeling the virus did some damage before I removed it.

Can you help me repair my laptop? Get my wireless adapter back and resolve the power/sleep mode issue?

Thanks very much!
Steve

A:Laptop only boots in safe mode, no wireless, sleep light lit, no power options

That really, really sounds like a motherboard problem.

To eliminate hardware as a possibility I'd back up the data and reinstall to see if it fixes it or not.

Alternatively, you could try booting it off of a linux live distro CD to see if it keeps up its shenanigans.

People write bugs to do strange things though. Is the sleep light lit prior to windows actually booting, or only when in windows?

I posted about this yesterday (link) and thought it was resolved, but it isn't. My 2 year old pushed some buttons on my Lenovo B590 laptop and upon start up (Windows 7 Professional 64), I get a black screen with a moving cursor. Ctrl+alt+del doesn't bring up the task manager.  Restarting in Safe Mode works fine.I double checked the boot order in BIOS and that looks OK.I also updated the video drivers, and (strangely) I was able to restart once in Normal and everything looked fine. However, when I restarted again after that, I was back to the black screen in Normal.  Yesterday, I disable the auto updating of drivers (per these instructions) and tried re-installing the drivers.  It didn't work.  So I uninstalled the video drivers, and then I was able to restart the machine several times normally, so I thought the problem was fixed. It was back this morning, though.  I also tried disabling all the stuff (AVG, drop box, etc.) that runs on startup, but that didn't help. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A:B590 boots OK in safe mode (Win 7 Pro 64), black screen w/ cursor in normal boot

I just tried re-installing the video drivers (because I had left it w/o them where I last stood).  I got an error, so I undid the changes I made yesterday when I disabled the autoupdating of drivers, but I still get an error when I try to install the driver. Specifically, it says "The setup program failed to install one or more device drivers.  Setup will exit." At this point, I'm starting to lean towards reformatting and re-installing Windows...

ok, so my computer hasnt been able to go into safe mode the last two times some bad thing has happened to it. i can easily get into the menu where you have to select how you want to start up, but when i select safe mode, it just sends a wall of text down, and stops at "mup.sys" each time. from there i have to reboot to get it to do anything.

now my main problem is that i disabled the graphics card i have installed in the pci and the motherboards default graphics card (i wanted to use the original one so i could transfer my graphics card to a different computer), so i cant really do much about getting into windows to change that, with out being able to run in safemode.

any solution would be great.

A:Safe Mode wont work

Try resetting the cmos jumper to set the bios back to default. If no jumper is present on the mobo, remove the battery for half and hour or so.

okay so previously before this issue i was installing some language packs. after doing so it prompted me to restart my computer, which i did, and afterwards found out it wont let me log into my profile. It wont let me log in to ANY profile for that matter. When i click it, it will say loading profile, etc...but then it just stops and i have to select the profile again.

I tried booting in safe mode but then it just scrolls down with a bunch of nonsense words and numbers and stays that way...

is there a solution for this? Its a mighty old computer, so if anything, i just want to make sure i get all my files safely out of there

I recently got a virus that I can get rid of and normally I would use safe mode to help get rid of it but cpu restarts everytime I try safe mode.

Other problems include sound wont work unless I unplug and then plug speakers back in, also wont find wireless internet, yahoo bad request everytime i start firefox (no big deal, but still annoying and means something wrong), and some advertising spyware everytime I google something. Avira wont start either.

Im assuming these are all related somehow.

Ran SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes, and Avira boot cd and problems persist.

Not sure where to go from here

Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

My laptop boots & the screen appears. I make it to the point where Windows asks for the login password & then shortly after that the screen goes blank. The laptop stays on & there are no blinking lights anywhere on the keyboard, but the screen is dark. When it first boots, it seems like there is an orange hue to the diplay. I just replaced the CPU fan. Before that, it would boot but then die shortly after. The screen would go blank then, too, but the power would also shut off. I feel like there may have been some overheating before the fan finally died. Now that it has a new fan, the power stays on, but the screen still goes dark. I used an HDMI cable to hook it to my TV & the display is fine on the TV. It doesn't disappear like it does on the laptop. When I set it so that the display is supposed to appear on both screens, it appears on the TV & stays, but it flashes on the laptop for a second & then disappears.

Hello, my laptop won't boot correctly. Everything loads but instead of the home login screen showing up, I get a blank screen with a cursor. I tried booting in safe mode and restoring but I still get a blank screen. Tried booting a recovery cd, but still get the blank screen. This happened right when I was watching a video, the computer just went black and restarted itself to a blank screen. Anyone have any advice? Thanks.

A:Laptop boots to blank screen and cursor. Help.

See if you can boot to a safe mode command prompt. Then run

sfc /scannow

Let us know how that goes.

If nothing unusual, then create a bootable puppy linux cd.

Puppy live-CD

See if that runs without problem. Trying to determine if this is a hardware or operating system/driver problem.

By the way, are your notebook vents clear and fan running?

I put my laptop in sleep mode every night and when I started it today the screen was blocked off on the right side about 2 inches. I could see the whole screen but it was squeezed up. So I decided to re-boot and when I did it re-booted with everything working but the screen. It is not in hibernation mode. I tried removing battery and holding down the "on" switch for a minute and that does not work. Is it the back light or just the screen itself is malfunctioning? I hooked the laptop to a TV with the s-video cable and there was monitor on the TV. Please help!

Dear members,

I checked and found that this issue has once been discussed here. Unfortunately the solution that was provided there didnt work for me. Hence this new post.

I am working on Win XP SP 2. For the last two days I observed that I could not update the AVG antivirus, the Spybot programme wouldnt start and all the technical forum websites were blocked. Normal websies like google etc are still working fine. What more even the computer wont start off in Safe Mode. I tried to install the SDfix software but failed as the system did not allow me to access and download the file. So i downloaded it on another PC and transferrred it here. But then when I tried to log on in Safe mode for running the software, te system did not log in and kept logging in as a normal mode start up.

I tried to access the anti-malaware sites but the system did not allow me to reach there.

THe last option that I have within my knowledge is to format the drive. But I would request all the others members to kindly share their knowledge in case something can be done to repair the system without formatting the same.

Kind regards.

MALWARE issues!!!I was having trouble staying in SAFEMODE to try to do some cleanup on my Laptop. The malware prevented my getting into safe mode and would cause the pc to just reboot normally. Because of this, I went into the msconfig>system config utility > boot.ini> then placed a check in the safemode box. I rebooted. Now its worse because it is now stuck with the BLACK screen safe mode choices. But It still wont go into safe mode and wont even reboot normally to reg windows mode.It trys to reboot on its own after a countdown of 30 seconds. But a blue screen quickly flashes once. Then it tries to reboot over and over again no matter which option I pick (last known config, safe mode networking, safe mode, safe with command, etc), it just tries to reboot over and over again like a broken record.I can get into phoenix BIOS by pushing F10 (or F12 I think), but I dont know what I can do there. At this point, i just want my pc to be able to boot normally into Window, and I will see what I can do in reg windows mode as far as cleaning the malware off my pc.Please help in easy terms. Thanks for your help in advance...PS: Windows Home edition OEM sp2 IE7-HP pavillion 8100 laptop-I have the original sealed discs that came with my 4 or so year old Laptop.I just need to be walked step by step if I need to boot from them. I have here my Mother in Laws C670-14D and its developed an issue whereby when you power up the screen is blank. it does have backlight and you hear the windows startup sound that you get before you login as windows starts up.

I can see the screen if I start in safe mode, in fact I'm using the PC in safe mode as I type this.

I did hae a similar problem in the past with another Toshiba laptop and that was windows 8, the issue was connected with power save settings but I've tried all of those and no luck. Also tried the remove battery suggestions, nothing has worked.

I'm guessing windows has done an update that is causing this but I'm at a loss and google has turned up nothing.

Running Windows 10 Home edition 64 bit

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance
