Solved: Very bizarre Internet connection issue

Q: Solved: Very bizarre Internet connection issue

This has been going on for two days now, and it's a bit complicated. Hopefully I'll be able to explain this clearly enough that someone will be able to help me figure out what's going on.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP1 on a computer that I built in Nov. of last year. I have had no problems with the internet until two days ago, when I noticed that some websites wouldn't load. I figured it was just a hiccup and ignored it, until the next day, when I couldn't get any sites to load in Firefox or IE. The really weird part? AIM still works just fine, 9 times out of 10. After some fiddling, I've gotten it to the point where if I refresh a page enough, I can get it to load. Sometimes I only have to refresh once or twice, sometimes (much more often) it's between 10 and 20 times. The other computer using the router in my apartment is working perfectly, no internet problems at all.

Here's what I've tried so far:
- Reset the router and modem.
- Check the physical cable connecting my computer to the router.
- Disable/enable the LAN connection.
- Reboot about 40 times.
- Run anti-virus and anti-virus software
- Disable/enable the firewall.
- Flush the dns cache in command prompt. This helped a little (cut down on the refresh times), but hasn't solved the problem at all.
- Deleted temporary internet files. This also helped, and got me to the best functionality I've had since this started-- about 60% of pages load on the first try, and most of the others load after a couple refreshes.
- Check ipconfig/dnsdisplay. This gave me a list of 24 websites (all spyware or virus related, judging by the names), but they all appeared to be looping back around to my computer. A friend of mine who has a degree in computer science says that she's pretty sure that means that this is an anti-virus measure; in order to keep my computer from getting hit with those viruses, it just loops back to my computer so I can't possibly access them.

I'm fairly certain I've tried other things as well, but I can't remember them. At this point, my options appear to be dwindling down to a full uninstall/reinstall of Windows, which I'd really rather not do. Any ideas as to what could be causing this problem, and how I can fix it? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sorry, but that sounds to me more like malware. How about posting the exact display you got back here? I've never seen that in an AV display.

Hi people. This is my first post and I hope someone can shed some light.
When I start to browse the internet using IE or FF, I keep getting failed connection errors randomly.
FF stats – “the connection was refused.”
IE stats – “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage”
But when I click refresh – the page loads fine?
Also if I go to speedtest.net I get the following error.
“Latency test returned an error while trying to read the latency file.”
I have tried the following with no luck.
Ran antivirus scan using AVIRA.
Scanned using Ad-Aware and SPYBOT.
I have also done a disk check at start-up incase it was I hard-drive problem but to no avail.
Any ideas?

Alright, bear with me. I'm decent enough at computers, but internet connection problems have always given me trouble. But now, I've got a problem that I'm not even sure how to explain, so hopefully someone here has an answer. I'll make it as clear as I can:

For two and a half months this setup has worked perfectly. The modem and the router are located on the first floor, where the landlords live, and they have been out of state for those two months. So no one is even touching the setup down there, and neither myself or my fiance ever messes with any Internet settings. SO nothing has changed. The other morning, we wake up to suddenly having no Internet connection at all. Charter says everything is fine on their end. We can connect to each other (local access only) but not to the Internet.

The setup:
My household has two laptops connected to a wireless network using Charter Internet.

Computer #1:
--HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop running Windows Vista
--uses Atheros AR5007 802.11 b/g Wifi Adapter, version

Computer #2:
--Dell Inspiron running Windows XP
--Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card

Cable Modem: Motorola SURFboard SB5101
Wireless Router: Linksys Wireless G 2.4 GHz 54 Mbps Router

I know those aren't the most descriptive details, but I really don't think this has anything to do with the hardware, to be honest. We both have different adapter cards and operating systems and both failed at the same time.

As I said, we woke up one morni... Read more

Nice one for the pure genius.......

Just changed from using a VGA cable to my monitor to HDMI. Nothing else is different. I am using an ASUS graphics card and all was well before. The only reason to changing to HDMI was length of cable.

Despite setting screen resolution to max, 1920 X 1080, as it was before, Windows displays on the screen with a black border round the outside, that is, not full screen.

At boot up the motherboard screen displays full screen, as does the 'starting Windows' page, but when it come to displaying anything thereafter it shows it smaller. Any ideas, guys?

What is the make of the Graphics Card, and does the card have a control center for adjusting graphics settings, like nVidia, and ATI?

If there is, open the graphics control program, and look for "Scaling Options" then adjust your display.

I recently purchased a television set to use with my computer as the main monitor. When I plugged my PC in, the screen resolution was humourously low (720x480) whereas the native resolution for the set seems to be 1360x850. I have since changed the resolution by fiddling with the settings a bit, but I have a rather pressing issue on my hands: none of my games seem to respect the resolution.
For example, Star Wars Battlefront II (my favourite PC game, might I add) ran fine on my old monitor at 1024x768; however on this monitor it enters into a fuzzy resolution which pushes some of the menu off the bottom of the screen. It also won't allow me to change the resolution as the menu is completely blank.
Another example is Bit.Trip Runner which does have a working resolution changing menu but only goes up to 720x480. The same goes for Garry's Mod.

This kinda leaves me in a pickle as the computer was specifically built for lower-end gaming.
For the record, my graphics card is an ATI Radeon 5570 which has completely up-to-date drivers, and a seemingly unbranded "generic" television which also seems to have up-to-date drivers.

I have HP Pavillion Laptop, Windows 7 bought in January 2010. Everything on the thing worked fine until one day it just stopped connecting to the internet. I was using a wireless connection, but its not connecting hard-wired either. Its under warranty so had the geek squad look at it (2 weeks later they say nothing is wrong and it works fine) They showed me in the store it connecting to their wireless network and my boyfriend was able to connect wirelessly at work. He brings it home and still nothing.

We did IP Config and it shows media disconnected, found some helps that said what to do to fix that and it still shows media disconnected.

We are beyond frustrated, have no idea what the issue could be. Desktop at home connects hard wired and through the router ....

Any thoughts?

Hello thar,

Last night i was happily gaming away when my pc crashed on me, after forcing it to power down and boot back up it would no longer connect to the internet and left me at "Local/Limited Connection Only". I used the repair button, enable/disable, reset the modem, router and pc multiple times, ipconfig commands etc and after awhile simply gave up.

Returned home this evening and powered it up again with the error still showing, I have been here for hours now and after running all the possiblites above again with no avail I looked at my services menu and it appears that computer browser isn't started however when I try to start it I just get an error message saying it stopped again, there are no dependancies for this process.

I decided to nab the girlfriends laptop, of which I am appealing for help from , and disable the wirleess and plug the ethernet cable from my desktop into this. Which is working perfectly fine . I have changed no settings on the desktop and it has and is still configued to auto detect ip/dns etc, just done a quick browse and so is this laptop.

The desktop is running windows xp, i've come across this problem before and generally its been a router/modem restart fix because its bugged out however this time it seems something happened with that crash last night.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The internet has not been working. Upon diagnosis, this is what I have found....

Modem: Motorola from AT&T?
Router (Wireless): Linksys WRT54G

Computer - Modem: This works. No problems.
Computer - Router - Modem: Doesn't work. Thus....
Wireless: Signal can be received by various electronics, but no internet.

IP for Modem:
IP for Wireless:

Tried powering off & restarting everything. Tried resetting router & configuring from IP address. It just seems as though the router doesn't want to talk to the modem. I can't access the IP of the modem from a C-R-M (computer-router-modem) connection setup. I think I have to change some setting in my modems configuration, but I don't know what.

A:Solved: Internet Connection Issue

Well, if your connection is really from AT&T (and it's not U-Verse), then this is probably a DSL line. In that case, you would probably need a PPPoE enabled router that can store a login/password for the PPP connection.

If it's U-Verse, then they have a built-in router and you could just use that ;P

Hi all

I can provide the code if necessary, but this issue is really confusing me, and seems to be more to do with the differences between how excel 2007 saves files.

I have written a dozen macros in VBA (Excel 2003) and recently upgraded to 2007. When in run the macros
in 2007, they run fine.

HOWEVER - when someone who is still on Excel 2003 uses the files after me, they get error messages, even though the code was written for 2003, and is completely unchanged.

Compile Error : Cant Find Project or Library

the Debugger then highlights the following line of code

Dim currentDate as Date
currentDate = Date (the Date section is where I am getting the error)

That line of code works in Excel 2003, if the file has not been saved by Excel 2007.

Anyone have any ideas?

At this I am considering downgrading my Excel back to 2003 version.

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks & Regards

Hello all,

I have a problem which I have not encountered before. I received a new wireless internet adapter, a Netgear WG 111T. I attempted to install the wireless adapter but had a problem with the installation which it would constantly connect and disconnect from the router. After attempting to find the problem, I decided to ditch the installation and go back to my old wireless internet adapter, a TP-Link WN 620G. My computer would then no longer recognize this adapter.

I then tried to system restore my computer back to an older date, but had no luck. After selecting dates from as short as a day back to as long as two weeks back, I decided to uninstall the driver and program which came with the Netgear adapter. I then tried the TP-Link adapter again and it would still not recognize the adapter. I then uninstalled the driver and program which came with this adapter and reinstalled it. My computer now recognizes the adapter but I am now getting the problem which I had gotten from the Netgear adapter, it will continuously attempt to connect the internet (acquiring network address.)

After reading multiple threads on here and trying the different solutions on there, I decided to make m own thread.

Saturday I bought and installed a Western Digital HD as a Drive 1 for backups. For warranty registration info I've been trying to access their sites as listed on Google. I have been unsuccessful in every attempt over 3 days. Each browser loads about 1/3 and freezes. When I go to Maxtor(Drive 0) theres no problem and there is no problem accessing any other site except when a server is overloaded.

My question is whether there is some browser setting I've overlooked. Of course its possible that Western Digitals servers are down but that seems a stretch. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

So I have two computers. One is a laptop that connects to the internet via wireless. The other computer is a PC. I wish to connect these two together to share internet.

Ive have successfully done this in the past via a network bridge, but it was with a different wireless card on the laptop. Now that I use a new wireless card, for some reason the same methods I used before yield no results. The old adapter was a NETGEAR WG511T and the new one is the Intel 3945ABG card. I have read on the microsoft site that the possible issue might be that the intel card does not support promiscuous mode, but then gave steps to force it to be compatible. I followed those steps but nothing changed. When the bridge is connected, it sees the cables in and everything but ip address and all that is

So then I tried just networking the PC and the Laptop by LAN and sharing the wireless internet connection. This also did not work. The network works, and the laptop still has internet, but the PC does not. The PC sees the Wireless connection as shared under the network connections tab, but pings and web browsing do not work. Both networks are on different subnets (wireless is on 192.168.2.x and LAN is on 192.168.0.x). I have the PC configured with a manual ip address of I have tried using the network setup wizard but it just ends up saying an error occurred but doesnt give me a reason.

Any suggestions on what to do next?

Any help is appreciated.

So, I was setting up security on someone's Netgear WGT624 108mbps wireless router when I ran a firmware update which ended up killing the router. I did some web searches which indicated others have experienced the same problem.

So, I connected their PC directly to their Arris TM502G/CT cable modem, pressed the reset button on the cable modem so it would assign the PC a new IP address and I was able to access the Internet with no problems.

Eventually, I replaced the broken Netgear router with my own Netgear WGR614 54mbps wireless router. I configured the wireless security settings on it, hit the reset button on the cable modem, connected the working Netgear router to it, and was able to access the Internet through the router. At this point, all is well.

Now, on to the issue. When trying to access a particular website when connecting through the router, the site has inconsistent loading issues. Some pages load quickly and without issue while others will partially load or sometimes not load at all. A refresh of the page results in the page loading just fine.

When I reconnected the PC back to the cable modem directly, and pressed the reset button, the same site loaded just fine without ANY issues at all.

So, I'm thinking maybe the router is "busted" somehow. So, I do some testing. While I view pages on the site having loading problems, I would view other sites (like Apple.com, cnn.com, ebay.com, adobe.com, you get the idea) and ALL of the other sites load... Read more

I saw your other thread below. The short answer is no.

There are (inexpensive) routers that *will* support this feature (i.e., restrict bandwidth). Inspect your router a bit or look for ones that support this feature.

Alternatively, I believe there is some software that will provide this feature. And by the way, if your 'buddy' usually downloads p2p stuff then yes, he's choking your connection as most consumer level routers aren't designed to handle this 'hoggish' behavior.

Running Windows XP. Using Outlook 6 to compose and receive email. Outlook stopped recognizing the internet connection one day and we were having issues with malware so I figured that was the problem and have downloaded software to correct those issues. The scans found a ton of junk, most likely due to the fact that limewire was used on the computer at some point. Now the issue we have is that we are able to connect to the internet through firefox and the connection is working fine. The wireless connection that is set up through this desktop machine is working fine as well. The other software on the computer is NOT recognizing the internet connection at all. For instance, iTunes provides an error message along with Outlook and others. I have tried rebooting, and also running the connection wizard which did nothing. This computer was originally set up for a dial up but has worked fine for 2.5 years on the cable modem. I have contacted the ISP and they will offer no help besides telling me it is a software issue. Can anyone tell me what else to try? I am fairly new at this but would really like to correct this issue.

Hey all, I've a rather odd problem which is this, I've recently bought a HP ENVY Phoenix 810-475na which work fine, using a wired connection and wi fi for my mobile, all was working with no problem until I moved house.

After the move and the fibre connection was set up, at random times I appear to get cut off, no webpage will load and iTunes store will not open, thunderbird also will not work, BUT, router lights are still all green, I can access the router page and it says connected, and oddly steam will continue to download as if it's working as well as the wifi on my mobile still works!

At first I assumed it was down to the settle in period for a new connection but it was set up on the 9th of june, I've tried different sockets on the router, different Ethernet leads, I seem to usually loose connection around 3:30pm but today it went just after 1pm.

Now the only other thing I can think which might cause a problem is that I have a very old looking telephone socket, talktalk had arranged when I use the house move to send a engineer but then they cancelled it! so I'm left using a old socket with a filter plugged into it to allow both the bb and phone to work, I'm not sure if that is the root of the problem but talktalk have said they would send one out but I would have to pay, as of yet they've not bothered to answer me on the forums, anyone got any ideas what the cause is to this?

I consider myself a pretty advanced computer user, and I have never seen anything quite this odd.

Yesterday, I was randomly unable to connect to AOL Instant Messenger. I quickly figured out that I could connect to all of my secondary accounts, just not my primary account. Likewise, using the web version of AIM, AIM Express, I can connect to my secondary accounts, but not my primary account. This led me to believe there was some issue on AOL's end with my account - wrong. I can connect to my account on other computers, just not this one.

I then found out today another issue to coincidental to be unrelated. I play World of Warcraft, and I can't connect to my usual server. ONLY that server. I can connect to any of the other dozens of servers, just not the one I usually play on. I know the server is up, because I have friends who are playing on it as I speak.

I have tried reinstalling AIM, restarting my computer, disabling my Norton firewall, power cycling my cable modem, doing a system restore to a few days prior to these problems - nothing has helped. I ran a virus and adware scan, with no results. I also have triple checked that my system date/time are correct, as I found out via google searches that that can sometimes be an issue.

Anybody have any clue what is causing this? It's almost like there's something on my computer that's denying me access to specific things that I use very frequently. I just don't understand how it can block ONLY one... Read more

I had win7 working for about two days until one morning I opened my laptop lid and it gave me a black screen with the error "Operating System not found." I started the laptop up again and it got to the screen stating Starting Windows and just hung there. I tried to reinstall win7 from the original bootable flash drive that I used and when I get to choosing the hard drive to install/format, It can't detect my computer's hard drive. I then tried using a vista dvd to to access my hard drive but it hangs on a black screen with only the mouse pointer appearing after "Windows is loading files." Every now and then the same thing happens when using the win7 flash drive. I'm not sure if this is an issue with my hard drive or something else, I just received this hard drive as a replacement for a failed one a day prior to installing win7.

Any help would be much appreciated

recently, i found an older mic in my closet, and being an avid counter-strike player, i try to get it working.

so i've enabled the mic in windows, tested it in windows, works great. however, when i go to use it in cs(enabled, yes) it gives me a quiet, garbled and delayed repeat of my audio output, such as, if i have the mic on, and i shoot a gun, about half a second later, it will come out garbled and quiet from my mic.

this would be kind of normal, except i am using headphones.

i have a dell c600 latitude laptop, a generic creative mic and panasonic headphones, and i am running windows xp.

Hi, I'm writing on the behalf of my brother, who's (desktop) PC is in the room as I write this on my laptop. We usually share our internet connection (I am still using it), but he is no longer able to connect.

In the past, he has gotten a "A network cable has been unplugged" message several times in seemingly random intervals, restarting his PC would usually fix this.

However yesterday he got a message: "This connection has limited or no connectivity" and his game (AlienSwarm at the time (through steam)) stalled out and he decided to restart the PC yet again, only this time after the reboot, he not only wasn't reconnected to the internet, he also couldn't find the Local Area Connection icon(s) in his Network Connections window, the only thing there is a "1394 Connection" which we have no clue about.

I'm gonna add my skype here if any helpful people need more info on this :P Feel free to add jaan.stern

Also I put this in the XP forum, because I wouldn't know which Network support subforum to use!

A:[SOLVED] Loss of internet connection, along with missing icons in Internet Connection

Start from 'go', ie, in Device Manager, uninstall his network adapter then reboot and set up a NEW network connection.

BTW - did he have any ports 'forwarded' etc?

i seem to have a bizarre wireless problem with my Toshiba satellite L500D with windows 7. sometime i will be surfing around the web and all sudden it will disconnect but the icon in the corner says it is still connected. sometime time i can disconnect and reconnect and thing will start working great again but then other times i have no choice but to reset the laptop. i have tried deleting my wireless network profile and re-adding it and it has not made a difference. i had thought that is could possibly be my router since it was old but the computers that i have running windows xp have not been having any problems and my laptop has been working great with it for about a year. it was just recently that it has started doing it.

I think it's not disconnect but only some sort of internet freeze.

Can you send and receive mails in case of them problems? (not webmail of course). Or try torrent or limewire or "windows updates". Are you realy sure internet connection has been lost?

I bought an Acer Aspire V5 two months ago. I am having trouble connecting to the Wifi at the place I work.

It's very frustrating. My new Acer will connect to Wifis in 6 other places I've tried to connect. But not at my work.

All other notebooks, ipads etc, including my previous laptop can connect to my work wifi - except my new Acer Aspire V5!

I have tried 1) Bringing in my own router from home (which connects fine with my AcerV5 at home) and plugging it in at work - we have now tried to use 3 routers there without success. 2) Renaming the work wifi 3) Standing right next to the router with my Acer. All no use.

When I plug in my AcerV5 at work with a cable it does work, but that is no use to me as it is in the main office, I need to use the internet in my classroom. I've had two friends in who are more knowledgeable about computers than me, they are also foxed by this! A recent theory is that the windows 8 on my Acer is not compatible in some way, though it still works everywhere else I've tried. I must admit I cannot get used to Windows 8 and regret buying this notebook.

Is there anyone out there who has any idea about this? I really need help.

Are you saying that the PC will connect to your router at one place but not at another place??? If so, that strongly implies wireless interference at the non-connecting location.

I have an HP pavillion with a 740b dvd burner. Lately, it's developed an odd issue where it won't burn to DVDs.
It will burn CDs read CDs and DVDs and do the lightscribe thing, but it won't burn DVDs.

I thought the drive might be bad, so I installed another working DVD burner and it is now exhibiting the same symptoms. The 740b is master, the second drive is slave.

I deleted all the dvd burning related software, including all my video editing software. I've deleted the drive through device manager and by hand in the registry, but the problem persists.

The fact that both drives are not functioning in the same manner leads me to believe this is a software issue.

Can anyone help me? I really need this drive working.

I recently added Norton 360 v2. I don't know if that might be affecting things.

My network completely collapsed for no good reason after taking the client machine apart and putting it back together exactly the same way. It worked perfectly before that.

In trying to set it back up, nothing worked, and I found it easier to uninstall ALL protocols and services, (apart from TCP/IP), and network adapters from both machines, and re-installing them to give myself a clean slate to work from.

OK, with that done, the folowing protocols are installed...

Client for MS networks
QOS packet scheduler
File and printer sharing for MS networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
IPX/SPX/Netbios compatible transport protocol.

The last two are installed purely to support a game or two that seems to prefer networking with them but otherwise aren't there for anything.

Windows firewall was then turned OFF on both machines, and the remaining firewall on "Server" (Sygate personal pro) was set to allow all, rendering it harmless.

OK, First the network setup wizard was run on the internet machine ("Server"). It was then run on the client machine ("client")

Both machines can ping each other on the network with no problems. A portscan of client helped me find out I could telnet succesfully to port 17 (qotd) of client, which I did because I was bored. No problems there then!

The network MSHOME, on both machines, shows that both "Client" - and "Server" - are connected

Change your attachment IMMEDIATELY. Never publish your ISP's IP-address!
And also don't publish your NIC's MAC-address (see my xx-xx-xx etc. below)

Using a router and fixed IPs, my ipconfig /all looks as follows:

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . .: pc's name
Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139(A) PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : (my PC's IP)
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . :
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : (my router's IP)
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : (ditto)

All my other PCs are the same except for their own IP-address.

In your attachment I noticed incongruencies between the 2 setups:

Both have IP Routing and Wins Proxy enabled, this should be DISabled.
Server has no Default Gateway.

What's happening is when i go to insert an Autotext entry, the autotext usually just appears as lots of squares like you see in the insert symbol section i.e. . It also sometimes has letters mixed in too.

I've included a few screen shots to demonstrate. To try and fix this issue, i have deleted the normal.dot file and restarted Word and also copied a version of normal.dot from a working Word version and still no go.

We are all using Office 2003 with all the latest updates and patches. The strange thing is, it has affected half the PCs in the office which includes 2 older workstations and a 3 month old workstation all of which are running XP SP2.

This problem only occurs in Word.

I received a response email from a good friend this morning, and the email she sent only showed up on my Samsung tablet. I have Comast.net email. I checked all other options...my iPhone, my MacBook, my desktop Mac and the actual Comcast.net website where the webmail account originates. Nothing came in from her at any of those places (including Spam or Trash folders), but I did get the email on my tablet in the email program I set Comcast.net up in. This has never happened before, and I don't understand how it could happen. Keep in mind her email was a response to mine sent yesterday, so it isn't even like she started with a fresh email addressed wrongly somehow.

Any thoughts?

I'm a bit nervous with all the talk of a huge Android hack, since my tablet is obviously Android based, although my other devices are all Apple.

Should I be worried about some sort of hack or is it just a fluke that will likely not happen again?

At some point, something hidden or not apparent is stealing the focus of other windows. My screensaver no longer turns on, and I usually use alt+tab to navigate. When I open alt+tab, it will only be available for a split second before it disappears as whatever this program is takes focus.

It's odd because I can type just fine, but when I open a new program it does not have focus (ie appears in the background and I have to navigate to it). And if I open a full-screen slide-show it is forced to downsize.

I have stopped services, programs, processes, started new profiles, to no avail. I haven't tried safe-mode yet, but I'd imagine it probably wouldn't do it there because I don't think this is a windows-based process stealing the focus. Below is my HijackThis log. Any suggestions?

Hi all,

Since the hard drive got replaced on my laptop about a year ago, I've only had one working USB port on my laptop. This hasn't been an issue, as I've coped by using a USB splitter. Unfortunately, my laptop has recently started to behave differently depending on what I plug into the splitter.

For example, speakers always work when plugged into the splitter, as does my Numark Mixtrack Pro II DJ controller. However, I can't get any mouses to work. My laptop also doesn't detect my phone when plugged into the splitter.

I've tried removing the splitter and plugging a mouse/ phone directly into my laptop and it still doesn't work, so the problem clearly isn't the splitter. I've tried reinstalling the USB driver things in device manager, but I'm still having the same issue.

Wtf is going on? Running Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit, if that's relevant.

A:Bizarre USB port issue

I would suspect that the USB port is unable to supply the power required by some of the devices. Are you using a powered hub ("splitter")? There may have been some damage to your computer during the hard disk change that has cause this and the failure of the other USB ports.

Hi everyone...

I have a really weird thing going on in both IE and Firefox. My Facebook profile page is "stuck" on a version from a few days ago. I have tried EVERYTHING to refresh it...I have:

1. Cleared all caches and cookies
2. Deleted all sorts of temp files
3. Done a "hard refresh" in both browsers
4. Contacted my ISP, who had me a) unplug my cable modem for 30 secs, b) uplug my router for 30 secs, c) flush my DNS cache, and d) reboot

Nothing. Nada.

It happens only at home--when I'm on my laptop at a coffeeshop or on my computer at work, then I can access the profile just fine. It's something on this computer only.

I know my Facebook profile isn't all that important, but I'm just stymied as to why I can't get a web page to refresh no matter what. And get this--my wife, when she logs into her Facebook page on the same computer--hers refreshes instantly.

AARRRGHH...any thoughts?

For this post I had to compose everything in Notepad first and then CCP. Next time it will most likely work.

Hey well.... Today i just got on my lappy, and its all normal, then im watching some vid. online, and my computer freezes... Its not like a scree nfreeze, but i cant minimize the window, but i can make those blue-boxes (on the main screen) cuz the window wasnt maximized, and i hit ctrl+alt+delete, to open up Task Manager, and then i wait a few seconds, and then its a black scree, and then my mouse is on it, i then wait a few moments, and i had to hit the power button to turn off my lappy... I restart- it restarted normally, with normal speed and all, then it freezes a little bit later againt, and atm, this is the only moment where my laptop hasnt frozen !

And im hoping it wonr freeze again... but im just wondering, could it be a registery problem? I mean, i dont really let anything at start-up get too-out of-control, i go into msconfig and manage all that i want to start etc. etc... But, when i scanned my lappy with Windows Defender (Full scan) it came up with like 4 different things, the certain files were having unwanted things(according to Defender...) And so, is it because of those files, all of those files are identical, and they are also from Safari... they have something to do with Safari,(im on Vista x64, but i like safari 4, think its the fastest )

Any help?

My PC's harddisk is a Samsung HD321KJ (32MB cache, 7200rpm, 320GB).

I was messing around with partitions today in a futile attempt to align my Windows system, and eventually just gave up and restored an image I had made just before.

In the process I noticed something totally weird...the drive itself suddenly reports a different CHS geometry. It used to be something like 38913, 255, 63 but now it reports 43009, 255, 57. Now all my partition software thinks track 0 is just 57 sectors long.

The total number of sectors on the HD remains the same, and there's no other ill effect so far. But...how the heck did this happen? Can I convince the drive to reset its reported CHS numbers? How?

A:Bizarre issue with harddrive's CHS geometry

I don't know the answer to your question, but I did have to go into the interwebs and expand my knowledge. Here are two interesting articles on the subject:
Cylinder-head-sector - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Disk formatting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

My take is that CHS geometry is a largely abandoned process that is ignored by most modern operating systems (pre-XP).

Are you running a dual boot with an old OS (DOS or similar) where this "low level format" is important? Is this condition causing an issue?

I was recently tinkering with my system and when it came to pressing the power on button nothing happened. I opened up the case and the green light on the mobo was on so I knew power was getting there. I assumed it was a power switch issue so I shorted out the power switch pins on the mobo and all was well.

More recently I am getting the same problem but now shorting out the switch doesn't work. This morning she refused to power up so I laid it on its side, opened it up, pressed the switch a few times and swore at it. Nothing happened. SO I am just sitting there conjuring up new swear words when it just starts up, fans spinning and away we go - I never even touched it. I have restarted a number of times today and no problem. I'm afraid to power off for an extended time, but I live in Houston and this puppy puts out a fair amount of heat and we don't need any more heat in the house!

So it doesnt seem to me that it could be a PSU problem? While running, voltages are stable etc. So is it a mobo problem? It seems after an extended shutdown (i.e. overnight) it cools down and then won't start. Is that a symptom of something cracked?

I don't mind replacing parts - I just don't know which parts or how to troubleshoot this problem.

Any suggestions?

A:Bizarre Power on issue - ideas?

Get a PSU tester for about $12. It's worth the money.
