Help My Parent's PC!

Q: Help My Parent's PC!

Greetings, all!

My parents have a slightly older HP. They have been having some trouble getting web pages to load properly and are generally unhappy with the speed at which things happen on the system. I'm providing them with an upgrade for Christmas, to address some of these issues and also to give my father the means to play Civilization V with me. Anyway, I recently encouraged them to switch to cable internet from DSL... and they complained it seemed slower! My mind was boggled.

They use AdAware and SpyBot S&D (at my behest) so I think there may be other issues at work. Can you take a look at the following log and let me know what seems anomalous to their processes? I see a few BHOs that I can likely eliminate but I'm not sure what else might be gumming up the works.

Thanks in advance!

I'm hoping someone can help me out. Our children were given Chromebooks through their high school and we have some concerns about what one of them is searching online. Unfortunately he's deleting his search history, so I'm unable to view the sites he's visited. I'm a novice with technology, but have been searching online to try to find a way to capture that deleted browser search history. Or at the very least, prevent him from deleting it. Unfortunately I haven't had any luck finding a way to do this on a Chromebook. Can anyone help? I'd be greatly appreciative. Thanks in advance.

I've got them running WebRoot Spysweeper, Eset NOD32. I've run ad-aware and spybot as well.

Hi, my parent's computer is quite infected and I need your help to fix it before I head back home in a few days. I've done some work on my own a week ago but it didn't have much effect.

The wallpaper is a blue letter "i" and task manager is locked. Also a program Spy Vampire is loaded and I don't think it's wise to use it's uninstall. My internet provider found out it was infected and told them to disconnect it from the net. AVG 7.5 has found a lot as well as SpyBot and Ad-Aware. They have an upgrade to Win XP Pro.

Thanks for the help!

hi this is my first post on this board, and i hope that someone can be of help. the reason i know that i have this 'foster parent' is because during shutdown i get an extremely brief "end program" message that says "foster parent"....it seems like this message is on the screen for less than a second. i searched my entire computer (including the registry) and didn't find anything. i originally posted this query on another board, and they recommended that i come here.so, without further ado, this is my "hijackthis" logfile......Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 8:03:49 PM, on 12/7/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exeC:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\wwSecure.exeC:\Program Files\Alwil Softwar... I need help with my parent's computer. They have about 4 trojans that I can't get rid of. They have dial up internet which is EXTREMELY slow--which makes it even harder to download anything. They have AVG antivirus which will detect the virus/trojan but won't get rid of it. I have run Spybot and AdAware without success. I can't run a log and send it in because I don't live with them and am not close enough to be running back and forth from computers. Is there something that you could recommend that I could download or run that would get rid of this for them? I have spent hours on this but a lot of the time is waiting for updates, etc., to download. I can't give them any directions on how to fix it via the phone because they don't understand anything. They are running Windows XP. Please help!

A:concerned parent

Once in internet explorer there is an icon that is a clock with a green arrow going around it. This shows you the history of websites that have been accessed in the last few weeks

But this can easily be emptied if someone doesnt want to be caught.

Other option is to click the arrow to the right of the address bar which will show you the most recently accessed webpages.
Assuming that you are concerned with your children viewing pornographic websites, getting a program such as net-nanny would be advisable. They dont block everything, but they get rid of a lot of the bad websites. Hope this helps

While working on my computer, I normally have open three (3) programs. These three programs are Microsoft Outlook 2007, Microsoft Excel 2000, and my ERP software (Ross). My system will slow to a crawl. I will shut down all programs, which takes quite some time, and begin the restart process. As the system is going through the shutdown, an "End Now" window pops up with the words "Foster Parent" in the title box. Once the system restarts, all is normal again. At this time, this has happened once a month for the last three (3) months.

Hi Mikemau77. . .

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

Why do you believe that Parental Controls are blocking your access to web sites. . (i.e., does the firewall report or some other indicate such)?

Are you logged on with an admin account?

Try this -
START | type int exp into the Start Search box | select Internet Explorer without add-ons | try to access Internet sites

Also. . . have you tried SAFEMODE w/Networking (F8 during boot-up)?

Good Luck to you. . .

If I turn on the parent controls on my childrens account in Vista, can they detect or know that it is on ?

A:Parent controls

Yes. The program WPCUMI.exe places an icon in the notification area which identifies itself as Windows Parental Controls. It even allows your child to view exactly which controls have been enforced. Now the actual controls are apparently not managed by that program, but by a parental controls service, such that once the program is deactivated the icon disappears but everything else remains online. The service can be seen to be working from taskmanager, but I am going to assume that your kids aren't looking for it even if they could find it.

Of course when they are blocked from logon at xx:yy, prevented from visiting a website etc your kids'll know that something's up. But I presume that isn't such a worry. Also if you block any games or programs, the icon is changed to alert the controlled user to the fact that this is out of bounds. You can always remove the shortcut or hide the game if that bothers you.

So that is the answer to your question.

The problem comes with preventing WPCUMI from running, assuming all the while that that is what you want. It normally runs with startup, but as far as I know all the programs which can edit startup need admin permission (possibly excepting Windows Defender, I don't use or know much about that). And after you tell Vista that you're an admin and want to use that tool, the stupid thing believes you and try's to edit your (the admins) startup!

I'll see if I can come up with anything toward turni... Read more

Hey,

Having some trouble getting the permissions set correctly on a folder.

\\folder1\folder2

Folder1 everyone has full control; unfortunately everyone needs to use this directory. I want folder2 to only let a group that I created to be able to alter the contents. They should only have the read permission.

I created the group and turned off inherited permissions and made sure the only members of the share (folder2) was the group I created. So the only thing listed under the members of folder2 is local group ?groupx?.

Everyone still has full control in this folder. Do I have to do anything with Active Directory for the changes to take affect? What am I missing?

A:Parent permissions

Just thought I would break this down a little better. I set up a shared directory for everyone on the domain to use.
(Folder2 is a child directory of Folder1)

Folder1

I want everyone to be able to access folder one on the domain but I only want one group to have access Folder2.

Ok, well, the p's (parents) have enough experience to view their email, go on the internet, and download digital photos on our old sony VIAO, but this morning, while I was sleeping, catastophy hit; when booting up windows they were faced with a message saying, and I quote my parents "something wrong with windows configuration". So, they were prompted to insert their windows cd and instead inserted the VIAO recovery CD (because that is the only one they have) and well, the computer is back in 1998, which is ok because it works now, but my mother has lost all her pictures.

So here is the question, would there be any way to pull the pictures out of some sort of system recovery that I have overlooked besides the regular windows system recovery or anything that I may have overlooked, even though they haven't made any backups in the last 3 years or any other safety precaution of the sort. I told them it was hopeless, but just in case I may have overlooked something, I'm all ears to the advice that you guys might have for me.

Thnx in advance for any responses!

HI,

I have had a frameset that worked just fine. Initially, I had a top frame of 78 rows (heading), and a left frame of 122 cols (navigition image) with the content in the third frame. I named the windows myself, so there was no problem with targeting the third frame. I used nested frames.

Now, I'm using a program to create navigation buttons in a java applet. I still want 3 frames, however, the left frame will go all the way to the top this time, then the top frame will start to the right of that frame, and the balance to the third frame. Same cols and rows.

This is the problem:

I can't name the windows myself this time. The java applet will only take the pre-named windows for the target. _self, _parent, _top, _blank. I know I need to use the _parent window. I know I need a file called index.html. I know it will take specific code to get the window to open in the third frame.

That's where I've thrown in the towel. I've been reading all morning and I understand all of the pre-named windows and how they work and even the parent window. But the only part I don't understand is the part I need. How do I get the content to open in the third frame using the parent window code?

My files are named: index.html (the frameset code); headingfr.html (the top frame); menufr.html (the left frame for navigation).

I would really, really appreciate it if someone could just give me the code I need. I'm so frustrated after all these hours of trying ev... Read more

Hi Kristi.

Question: What EXACTLY does your applet do? The reason I ask is that it would probably load much faster if you could achieve the same effect with a JavaScript of DHTML script. Then also, you wouldn't be limited to any frame naming conventions.

The legality of the program is not the issue. It's the sharing of copyrighted works that's the problem.

In the first trial involving the record-industry union versus an illegal downloader, a jury found Minnesota single mother Jammie Thomas guilty of infringing on music rights. While Thomas was illegally sharing 1,702 songs in her folder, she was only sued for twenty-four recordings. The price she’ll have to pay: $222,000, or $9,250 per song

A:VB.Net Accessing Parent Form

It would be nice to have a little more information about what you already have. You have a base form loginwin, and a button Button1 on loginwin? Have you also created form1 in the design view?

That is the crucial question. You don't need to dimension a form which you've created in the design view. When you just want to open such a pre-created form, use form1.show() to bring it up, and then you can fiddle public properties all you want. For example the line would be

Code:
form1.address.text = "000"
This MUST come after the show command, or you get your error code.

You should rename form1 f to be consistent with your plan. In theory there is an alternative: you could also say

Code:
dim f as form1
as you have done. However that still needs the show command and would normally be a bad idea unless there's a really good reason for it, because it takes up unnecessary memory (assigns space for f AND form1) and more time. It also makes it almost inevitable that you'll get bugs for calling (accidentally) f one time but form1 the next time, such that neither works as planned.

Interestingly you can actually use Dim with forms (dim f as new form with {attributes}) to create a simple form without going through the design view at all. I've done that a few times to make my own simple pop-up messages. You still need to use show to bring them up and close to make them go away again.

Hope that's what you needed.

A:CS5 Bridge's Parent Application

First question, probably silly, but I'll ask anyway. Is the image you are tring to open a raw file to begin with?

Has this always happened?

The parent app I would think, is Photoshop CS5 Extended. That is what contains the raw processing app.

I don't have Extended but use CS4 with bridge. If I just left click on a raw file in Bridge it auto opens in Photoshop in the raw editor, because as I say the raw app iscontained inPhotoshop not Bridge.

My parents were having some problem with their computer. Recently it was prone to losing internet connection for no reason, freezing hard that holding power button for a few seconds won't work (had to unplug power, no reset button on their machine), and when I finally got Windows XP to boot, I saw a window for CMD32 pop up, lots of "invalid parameter" or something like it scroll by quickly then closed. They have Norton AV 2009 on (retail) and according to it, the machine is clean so I suspected Norton was broken by trojan or something.

Attempt to access Symantec, Panda, or Trend Micro web site results in timeout error so I can't use TM's housecall or Panda's online scanner to check or get Symantec to explain why their program allowed a trojan to slip in, and why Norton falsely reported machine was clean :/ My parent insisted on keeping Norton when I offered either AVG or Avast as free alternative.

I took the hard drive out and made it slave in my sandbox PC. 4 passes later with Avast, it was reported clean but when I plugged the hard drive back in my parent's PC it showed the same symptoms including the unexplained CMD32 running something, and unexplained inability to access some AV sites. So back into my sandbox PC, Avast and Spybot S&D still shows it is clean so it's time to call in for help. :(

Even though my parent's hard drive was made slave and I never opened any file on it, chances are my sandbox PC may now be infected. I can always reform... Read more

Hello,
I hope you can help me.
My daughter is experiencing problems with her Windows ME machine. I've cleaned off what I could with Spybot and Adaware. I've also run Norton 2002 and the Micro trend on-line virus scan (although I'm not confident that the on-line scan made it to completion).

I'm seeing alot of modem activity, even when nothing else is running on her PC. She's getting icons on her desktop, pop-ups and spyware. Her machine is running very slowly and locks up on a regular basis.

I've run hijackthis and Hijackthis analyzer. The analyzer log is posted below:
Thanks in advance.

I need to remove "WMPNetworkSvc" from a number of programs & files. Cannot trace back how I linked or shared this Media file in the first place. Was changing permissions so I could open other restored files. Unable to remove it now as it inherited permission from its parent. So, how can I find the parent?
I have another problem but need to resolve this first before posting another thread.

A:How do I find the parent file

WMPNetworkSvc (Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service) is a Windows service. You can disable it if you do not need to share your WMP media libraries over the network or homegroup.

To disable it, right click Computer icon on desktop or Start Menu and select Manage, go to Services in management console, double click Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, and on properties window that opens, select Disable from drop down menu:

To temporarily stop the service, you can also type net stop WMPNetworkSvc to elevated command prompt and hit Enter.

Part of our strategy to do the right thing for our teenage offspring is to try and limit the amount of time they spend glued to the computer screen playing online games etc. We've tried parental management functions in our router to put time limits on IP leases but it turns out our isp has disabled those functions in the router. So I've tried setting up user accounts with password access. Waste of time because a 2 second search of Google finds 15 ways to circumvent account passwords. I know there must be a way to lock it down so the devious little blighters can't discover the passwords. I also want to know how to block access to a certain IP address so they can't log in to the router and find or change the Wi-Fi password. Can somebody give me some pointers at all?
Thanks in advance
Pete

ok so we got a router last year for when im home for summer, problem is im 80ft from the router and when it gets hot, or w/e the signal is aweful and i cant do anything (takes google like 10s to load)

i got a cable from monoproce (75ft) so i can move the router to a central locale for all the comps in the house, but the main comp my parents use doesnt have a wireless card in the computer so i was wondering if i could hook an ethernet from their computer to the modem for a connection. or can i only have 1 line into it for the router, bc if i move the router i wont have another long cable to hook their computer into. and yes getting a card is more simple, but i dont wanna buy anything else lol

A:Networking my parent's house..

I would invest in some wireless access points since your able to run Ethernet cable from the router. Wireless Access Points would give you access to your wifi network anywhere you one in your dwelling.

I use a anti virus program that lists the PID's(Process ID's) of programs running and it's showing that all the programs that access the internet in some way have the same base parent PID. Programs like Firefox, Ventrilo, Steam, anything that uses the internet it seems like. But when looking for the program that is using that PID I can't seem to find it. I've looked in task manager under processes and also in services, as well as in Resource Monitor. This is what I'm seeing. PID I can't find > PID linked to explorer.exe> PID linked to the program using the internet (Firefox, Ventrilo, Steam).
The unknown program is always the first parent. When looking at explorer.exe the base parent is also the unknown program.

I guess I'm wondering a few things.
Should there be a parent PID for explorer.exe?
If so why can't I find it anywhere?

Thanks for reading, hopefully someone can shred some light on this.

I'm running windows vista 64bit

I've encountered this "End Program - Foster Parent" just today (I only use my laptop during weekends but relatives use it at weekdays). It's my practice to try to search the net when I find something I am not familiar with in my laptop. So, I found out that this is some kind of virus that is not recognized by most Anti-virus. Most of the links I found had no solution for this, until I found this post http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic286119.html. It gave me hope that I would not have to reformat my laptop to remove the "Foster Parent" infection. So, I would like to ask for your help in removing it.
