MS Paint GUI wrong- Perhaps stuck in wrong mode- Example shown

Q: MS Paint GUI wrong- Perhaps stuck in wrong mode- Example shown

Last night, My MS Paint GUI went screwy.

It looks like it is out of Aero mode or something, but Aero troubleshooter found no problem & everything else is fine. I was having an issue with a video game for PC (full screen) which normally fiddles with the Windows theme, but I honestly dont know.

I dont like the adjusted look, and fear this is one of those simple problems with a insanely complex solution.

Thanks in advance, back later

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm running a clean install of XP Home SP3 on an HP a250n, with all stock parts (except for perhaps a modem, but that's irrelevant).

All drives in the machine are shown in My Computer, and opening them leads to the correct locations. However, my two CD drives show icons as if they were removable memory cards, and my recovery partition has a wireless network adapter icon. I've attached a picture. (I blocked the names out in the image- this is not a symptom!)

This isn't mission-critical... the machine works fine but this is annoying!

I tried to rebuild icons with Tweak UI with no success.

The icons on the other user account are fine. Both are Administrator accounts.

guys, my external HDD file system before was FAT32, now i made it to NTFS using the "convert X: /fs:NTFS" command...

after that, i think my HDD's "used space" went up, what could be possible problems..

i used the convert command because my files in external HDD was worth more than 200gb+, so it would take long time.

also, i checked for hidden files, nothing came up.

here's the pic:

i just used the "disk cleanup" and there were some gigs worth of files from the "old chkdsk", i removed it and its back to normal..

My Windows user has a pretty colour assigned in Metro and previously that was the only colour ever shown at boot-up. The Welcome screen and My avatar against that nice shade which I picked.

But ever since I had to enable the Administrator account, an UGLY purple blue shade is shown for most of the boot-up sequence. It reminds me of work. I don't want it on my home PC. This problem just irritates me.

I have set my regular user as the default Windows account, with automatic logon.

It was when I messed around with all this, that the colour changed.

Any idea if this can be fixed?

I bought this machine through BestBuy. Its an Emachines and the price was too good to pass up for the stuff inside it. From the factory it had two CD/DVD drives.

SAMSUNG CD-R/RW SW-248F [CD-ROM drive] (e:)
SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-816B [CD-ROM drive] (d:)

Since then I have removed the CD-R/RW and replaced it with a DVD burner, so now I have

PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-108 (d:)
SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-816B (f:) -

(e:) doesn't exist anymore

The problem is how the two drives appear in My Computer.

The DVD burner is shown as MMC/SD (D:) (Which is a stick memory reader? has the icon of some sort of card looking thing) and the DVD reader is shown as SmartMedia (F:) (icon of a ZIP disk/floppy looking disk, probably what the SmartMedia disks look like)

The two drives show up just fine in the Device Manager. It is only under My Computer where the problem is. I can even right click the MMC/SD (D:) iron and eject the correct disc drive. In the icon's properties, it lists all the correct information as if it were correct.

Any ideas? Its not causing any problems besides the wrong icon/name. Its confusing when I'm trying to figure out which drive is which in My Computer.

To all -

My first post in this forum, but I've been around the block a few times building my own machines (and for others), but a month ago i ended up springing for a dell xps 8300 desktop b.c i got a great deal on a scratch and dent system with an i7-2600 processor, 1.5tb drive, and an ATI 5770 1gb graphics card.
So long story short I've added one component and upgraded one existing component. The first was adding an SSD drive to the mix, which worked out wonderfully (i boot from power off to desktop in 13 seconds). Very pleased.
The second seemed to be just as successful...I replaced the stock PSU (460watts) with an Antec 650watt continuous power PSU (certified and all). Reconnected all the cables, crossed my fingers, turned on the power supply...got the green light on the motherboard so turned on the computer and all was fantastic!!!
The catch is..........I didn't notice until hours later i'd not heard a sound from the computer in quite some time. Tested by playing a few songs and nothing.

Here's where i got lost. In the "playback devices" (right clicking on the audio icon in the task manager tray) it shows the music playing (as in the levels are bouncing up and down). First thought - i'm an idiot and plugged my speakers into the wrong hole.....not the case. Second thought - speakers could be toast - not the case. I have a brand new V242h monitor that I connected to my PC via VGA cable, and to my laptop via HDMI, and was using the monitor's built-in menu to manually switch between the two inputs, when I accidentally selected DVI-D, which I do not have hooked up to the monitor, nor do I own a computer that uses it. Since then, I have been unable to get the monitor to switch back to either the VGA or the HDMI input. So far, I have tried: - Powering the monitor off and back on after several seconds.- Unplugging the monitor and plugging it back in after several seconds.- Unplugging all cables from the monitor and plugging them back in after several seconds.- Unplugging the monitor for over 15 minutes and plugging it back in.- Pressing the monitor's Auto adjustment button.- Navigating the monitor's menu blindly by memory. The only thing the monitor will display after any of these attempts is an error message saying "Signal Cable Not Connected!" How can I switch the monitor from DVI-D back to either VGA or HDMI input without a DVI-D device?

A:Monitor Stuck on Wrong Input Setting

I had this problem on a couple of occasions. You need to press and hold the "auto" button for 3-5 seconds, and the input selecton will appear. Use the left/right arrow keys to move to the correct input source, and then press the "Enter" button. I have yet to locate instructions to have it automatically detect the input source (I sometimes use different laptops connected via different cables), and I have to manually switch it.

Hi everybody,
since friday we have a strange problem with some clients and ARP answers. We notice that our switch recognize wrong MAC addresses on some ports.
We use wireshark to see what happens and we get the following:
5 clients:

172.30.71.6 (XX:XX:XX:F7:52:75)172.30.41.1 (XX:XX:XX:38:d1:a8)172.30.63.1 (XX:XX:XX:c2:b0:b9)172.30.14.1 (XX:XX:XX:88:c7:4f)172.30.59.1 (XX:XX:XX:7b:67:4d)
Wireshark runs on client 1 (172.30.71.6, promiscuous mod off)
Client 5 (172.30.59.1) send a broadcast arp question (who has 172.30.41.1 - tell 172.30.59.1) and client 1 (172.30.71.6) is sending ARP replies with src = XX:XX:XX: 38:d1:a8.

172.30.41.1 (XX:XX:XX:38:d1:a8) is offline (network cable removed) and 172.30.71.6 has no entry of 172.30.41.1 (XX:XX:XX:38:d1:a8) in his arp cache.
The clients run Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1
Why we get these phenomenon and how can we solve it? Is there maybe a problem with some updates of the last patchday?

Thanks for the reply and kind regards

Bernd

Shortly after I pressed the Power button for the first time on my brand new Windows 8 laptop, I was brought to the screen where I set my time zone. I changed the default - Pacific Time - to my time zone - Eastern Time - and continued setting up my computer. Not long after, I realized that the time shown on my computer was wrong, and when I checked I discovered that the time zone had reverted to Pacific Time.

The problem is: I cannot change the time zone! (Yes, I am an Administrator.) Whether I do it from the Start Screen or the desktop, the time zone always reverts to Pacific Time. I even tried running tzutil from an elevated command prompt - the time zone will not change.

How can I change the time zone to Eastern Time?

Recently I had a power outage in my dorm. My computer was on standby mode when it happened. The computer booted normally when the power came back and it ran fine. Then I put the computer in standby mode again because I had to go somewhere. I come back and resume from standby and instead of normally booting to the windows password log on screen, the computer restarts.

Also, the LED light on my case that normally blinks on and off during standby, blinks briefly for the first few seconds and then disappears. This never happened before.

I have tried rebooting and shutting down the computer, but every time I go to standby and resume from standby, it restarts and then goes the windows log on screen.

I have no idea what is going on. This problem did not happen before the power outage.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'm having a serious issue with my PC. After I leave it for an hour or so, the mouse, keyboard and all other USB devices aren't responding. Originally it would be in sleep mode, however I turned off the sleep to 'never', and it still won't respond.

To give an example of what's happening: The keyboard has a light for when the numpad lock is turned on. However I can't turn it on or off through the keyboard, and when I unplug it and put it back in, it doesn't illuminate again. Same story for my wireless adapter, it's lit until I unplug it and then when it's returned it won't start up again. The computer still has the on light flashing.

Please help, it's driving me nuts, it started happening yesterday. I updated to Windows 10 around 3 weeks ago.

My computer is running Windows 2000. I installed a game (Scrabble) that is incompatible with Windows 2000. When I tried to run it, my computer switched into a different video mode (color depth, resolution, etc.). I manually switched it back, and uninstalled the game. Now, however, all my icons appear in 256 color mode even though my display properties are set to 32-bit color mode.

I've tried changing the color mode back to 256 and then back again to 32-bit. I've tried reinstalling my video card drivers, and also tried updating them to the latest ones. I've reinstalled the drivers for my monitor. I've also upgraded to DirectX 8.1 (up from 7). I also deleted the file ShellIconCache and rebooted to recreate it. Nothing has worked. Everything else displays correctly including pictures, wallpaper, screen savers, web pages, etc.

Any ideas?

My computer was running fine when the problem struck ( as always.) I started a video game, specifically Gary's mod, nothing too straining for my system and the screen FROZE UP. Purple Everywhere, and little black lines near my mouse.

I tried to restart, thinking it was just a fluke but it kept happening, even when i wasn't playing now, making it impossible to use as the screen would freeze and glitch up.

I went into safe mode and downloaded the latest drivers and it still keeps happening.

I did a system restore and it keeps happening, but now it won't even show the Windows Log-in screen out of safe-mode, only a black screen with the pointer.

And yet it works perfectly fine in safe-mode!

I don't know what to do, I need this fixed ASAP, much thanks in advance for any help given, and I'm running an 8800 GT graphics card with about 2 Gigs of ram and have never had graphical problems up until now.

I'm trying to get a DXDiag file, but it doesn't seem to want to do it, in safe mode anyway.

A:Heeelp! Something seriously wrong. (Posting from Safe-mode)

I opened up my computer and dusted it, looked around at stuff and wires and generally did nothing. It consisted of me going "What the is this, work you "
The smiley face being a censor for my non-family friendly words. But... now it seems to work oddly enough?

Perhaps the power of the mind is enough?

Perhaps the computer was afraid of me tearing out its insides and replacing it.

My laptop suddenly will only boot in safe mode and the biggest problem is its setup by my old school to only be logged in by their network administrators account in safe mode. It doesn't even give me the option to start in my local admin since it is in safe mode 24/7 I can't get beyond its windows XP user/password window so I think cmd line options are out of the question but give me suggestions if that's possible... I've tried starting windows normally so I could use my XP admin account but it goes right back to safe mode in the other domain. I also can't use boot to flash drive and I doubt boot to cd works either (meaning no reformatting which I am willing to do).. The thing is essentially bricked unless I can log in on my account somehow or bypass domain

A:[SOLVED] boots safe mode only&defaults to wrong log in

There is a Local Built In Administrator account for the computer setup by your school. You must contact your old school to find out what the Local Built In Administrator Password is to log in and then you can create a new account for yourself and leave the schools domain. The only other option is to Boot into Setup (Bios) and set the Boot Order for CD rom drive to be First Boot Device. Then boot off of the XP CD and Delete the Existing Partition, Create a new partition, Format the Partition NTFS and Install Windows XP.

The resolution are set as recommended but indeed these are different. As soon as I remove the TV, everything is getting back to normal. Anyone experienced this behavior ?
Thanks,

A:Wrong resolution on main display at boot in dual screen mode

Yes there are problems with second displays affecting the primary display in many cases.

You may be lucky in the fact that removing the second display restores the primary display to normal - sometimes it remains distorted until rebooting.

No doubt the problems will go in time as the TV hardware improves, and the PC display drivers become more effective for multiple different display formats.

I got a virus the other day after going to facebook. I started getting tons of request from Norton from programs asking to connect to the internet. I then suddenly got a "security station"(or some type nonsense) alert. I went onto google and started looking everything up and low and behold I had a virus. I quickly looked up that Malaware bytes was a good system to get rid of this bug and used it. (norton wasn't detecting anything except for those initial firewall requests). I thought I was clean but then I began to notice that my google toolbar kept getting hijacked. I would put in a request and press enter. It would either send me to a page I did not request or just open up another google search. If I try Yahoo it does the same thing. I use IE and Firefox on my machine and it is doing it with both.I then went into safe mode and ran spybot. It didn't find anything. I then ran Norton and after a warning that it may not be a thorough search it ran-it found nothing. However now I can't even get into Safe Mode to run Malaware bytes in safe mode. I get a blue screen after I press safe mode and it give me a listing of problems. I use Windows XP and I don't have a clue what is going on at this point. Any help would be EXTREMELY appreciated.Edit: Moved topic from AntiVirus, Firewall and Privacy Products and Protection Methods to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Situation 1
-------------
Hello. I had “music store card” [gift card] that I received as a birthday gift lying around so I figured let me it out. Anyway, I purchased 3 songs from iTunes.com. Attempted to burn them. It didn’t work I got some sort of write error on the CD.

While in main screen I clicked Edit > Preferences > Advance > Burning: Discovered that the settings were set to burn an Audio CD. However, I was using a Data CD. Is this why it didn’t work? Last I read up it should have worked. The disk was a CD-R Memorex Cool Color CD-R. This shouldn’t have proven to be a problem right?

This disk can’t be played in Xbox (original not Xbox 360).

Situation 2
-------------
In another situation I tried burning a copy of and an mp3-to-Audio-CD.

When copying the Audio-CD I was using Nero Burn Ultra Edition 6.6.1.4. Got the error message saying along the lines of “write fail, unable to finish end session.” Same thing happened when I was trying to make an mp3-to-Audio-CD, except I was using Microsoft Windows Media Player Version 10.0.

This disk can’t be played in Xbox (original not Xbox 360).

So what am I doing wrong? Here are my objectives:

1) Want to burn audio CDs that will play in cars, stereo systems, DVD players, Xbox, and Xbox360 – when I get it . If I keep purchasing music from iTunes.com, this may prove difficult?

2) What media should I use for what ty... Read more

this is a many faceted and increasing in facets issue (ill try to make it as short as possible);

backstory:
the male side of my video cable connection (the part on the motherboard) had bent pins; the pins were unbent and the cable was able to fit back in, BUT

problems:
the picture was garbled--wrong colors, moving lines, etc. the people at a tech store told me the video cable was pinched and knowing that it had been jammed in the hinge for a while, i believed it extremely feasible. I finally ordered a new video cable but replaced it, and to no avail. the picture may have been slightly better--but not significantly if so; additionally (and im not sure if it was this way the first time as well) the computer was displaying at the size of the external.

i restarted, and reazlied that the laptop screen displayed nothing at startup, until logged in--exactly like the external. i figured that at least a portion of what was going on was the computer was sending the external screen signal to the laptop.

things i've tried:

-reseating both ends of the new video cable MANY times
-turning the computer off, taking out battery, holding start button, putitng battery back in, restarting
-every variation of screen resolution/external monitor setting
-pluggin in the external, putting laptop to sleep, unpluggnig external
-reinstalling video/image drivers
function key combinations

when i tried to put in safe mode via F8, the screen went blue or light gray and stayed that w... Read more

I just returned from a vacation to find that my laptop has no wi-fi. When I click on the wi-fi icon, no network pops up; only airplane mode.I did not take the laptop with me on vacation. I turned everything off and made sure the computer was unplugged. When I got in, I plugged the computer in to charge up the battery. While the computer was charging, I clicked on the hp icon which is usually a blue circle with a question mark in it; this time there were two yellow exclaimation points in it. I had a message to install updates. I did this. Still no wi-fi.I have wi-fi in the home because tablets and kindles are working. Is there something I can do to fix this ? I have never seen just airplane mode show up under the settings, with no networks. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it!kitty12

Sorry for my English..

Hi!

Maybe I can describe more than one problem in this thread and not to create new one?

1. Like I said, network adapters shown only in safe mode on WinXPSP2. I'm talking about Device Manager. If I'm booting normally or in Safe mode with Networking, there are NO network adapters, even what to expand. And if I disable all the adapters in safe mode, there are all in normal mode. But if I enable them, they all disappears. When I enable all adapters, that "sector" "Network adapters" disappears.
In Network Connections there are no Local area network. There are my DSL, but no LAN. And Win gives me 769 error, can it be because there are no LAN? I can't connect to Internet on that computer.

2. And now, what happened BEFORE that. I think, that could "break" my PC. Suddenly, Win "thrown" me error. It said, that my DirectSound drivers are bad, something like that. I have downloaded required drivers and tried to install them. But.. PC just restarted in installation progress. I turned of automatic restart on errors. Windows just "thrown" me blue error screen, where was written one file, sysaudio.sys. I found that file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\. Downloaded file from DC++ and replaced it. Size was the same. But still appears blue error screen with same error and file. Then downloaded (then my connection was still working) drivers exactly for that motherboard (specifically, for chipset), and aga... Windows XP Media Center Edition -
This Dell Dimension only has USB ports, no conventional/serial kbd and mouse ports.
Prior to Windows loading the user interface, the keyboard works, but once XP comes to the login screen, the keyboard/mouse are not recognized.

To sort this I am trying to simply logon as the Administrator in Safe Mode. However, I am routed right back to the graphical display UI, shown the User accounts, with no "Administrator" account showing and no keyboard.... defeated again.
Isn't there a way to get XP to boot directly to the Administrator account?

I seem to be getting power to USB devices that require such, but no USB function - I'm assuming other drivers will load once I actually access a user account, preferably the Administrator

A:Solved: Administrator Account not shown in SAFE Mode ??

I have just had a quick look through your posts as I seemed to remember posting on a thread that you started about Windows XP Media Centre edition.
Having read your posts, is this a new installation on this computer, after a format.
Try disconnecting all usb devices, except mouse and keyboard, if of course any are connected. ie: printer, camera, external HDD etc.

After a power outage 3 weeks ago I was having issues with the system going down at around 5 minutes and then less and less time after that. I was told it was a display issue and to uninstall and reinstall my display drivers. I uninstalled my drivers and it was still the same. I felt like it was temperature related. I found my graphics card (Radeon 5700) was dirty. I cleaned it and thought I was back in business. Everything was back to normal, all I needed to do was update my graphics drivers. Once that was done, my computer would no longer load past the Windows splash screen.

I used Puppy Linux on a flash drive and I have access to everything. I can use the internet and access all my files. This to me says that it is not a hardware issue.

The fact that when I try to go into safe mode it gets stuck for more than a day on classpnp.sys (when I finally give up). I understand that classpnp.sys has loaded but, there is something after that that the computer can't load. I have seen some people have atipcie.sys load after classpnp.sys and it makes sense to me that it would be a graphics driver that is causing the issue.

I need my Windows 7 up and running for school and work projects. Any ideas, thoughts, or help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi ,
Follow this tutorial to run SFC /Scannow at boot.
SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot
If you want to run the command from a USB drive follow this tutorial.

And apply it to the first link instead of the ERD (Emergency Repair CD).

Generally a good tutorial to read.

I tried using the driver CD to see if it will help with anything rebooting and I did some Express Test. It gave me this code:

Error Code: 650F:136C
Msg: IDE device failed. Blank media or no media is present in optical drive. Test requires media with data (Resource CD, Installation CD).

Have no clue what it is. Ive done some reading on Mup.sys. It requires me to remove some 'USB card'. I dont really see any . Any advice would be appreciated or if you have anymore further queries let me know.

A:Stuck on Mup.sys (during safe mode) and stuck on Windows XP loading screen.

HI Jon,
Thats not a error to worry about.
That error comes up when u run express test on the computer and the cd drive is empty.
Are we working on a notebook or a desktop.
And mup.sys is a system file .You can repiar mup.sys by following these steps.
1>Start the computer from the Windows Xp CD.2>At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair. 3>At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: ren c:windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys mup.old4>At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:expand <cd-romdrive>:\i386\mup.sy_ c:\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys5>After the file is successfully expanded, type exit, and then press ENTER to exit Recovery Console. 6>Restart the computer.
Best of Luck.

Hi, today I decided to restart my PC but it got stuck at the "logging off" screen, so I just held down power button to turn it off.
When I tried turning it back on, it got stuck at the windows logo. Safe-mode won't work, nor will system recovery.Note: I had not made any hardware changes in the past 3 years. I also don't think I have made any big software changes in the past couple of weeks.

What I was doing before I decided to reboot:
I was reinstalling different versions of firefox because I was having flash issues (FF and Flash arent very compatible on some of the newer FF versions)

So I installed 30.0 and it asked me reboot to finish the installation and here I am. I don't think it's related, might be just a coincidence.
_______________________________
Full details of what is happening:
Normal boot-up freezes at the windows7 logo. The animation freezes too. PC does not auto re-boot.
Safe-mode gets stuck while loading components. Notably at storport.sys (not sure if I spelt that right) PC does not auto re-boot.
System recovery freezes after a while during the © Mircosoft Corporation screen with green loading bar. PC does not auto re-boot.
The little light that flickers when the PC is doing something is not lighting up during the loading screens. It flickers for the first couple of seconds and then just stops (or very faintly flicks every 3-4 secs) The loading screen animation then freezes after ~10-15 seconds.
