Can I change the Default Edit Program in Pictures Context Menu?

Q: Can I change the Default Edit Program in Pictures Context Menu?

This is the Context Menu that I'm referring to, accessed by Start>Pictures>[Open a Folder to display thumbnails], Right-click on Thumbnail.

With my current settings [where?], if I select and click on Edit, MS Windows Paint opens as the Default Editing Program.

I don't like Paint at all, and want to change from that current Default Program, to allow my Pictures to be opened and edited by Picasa. Is there a method by which I can change that Context Menu, so that by clicking on Edit, the selected thumbnail automatically opens in Picasa?

And before anyone leaps in and suggests any other editing program from the plethora of others available [eg. Photoshop etc.], please don't waste your time - I'm not interested in them, as Picasa fulfills all of my basic photo editing requirements.

Basically, I'm looking for a shortcut to open Picasa with just one click, as I'm aware that I can also get there through Open with, in the same Context Menu.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Tony,

You can use "Open With" with the Always use the selected program to open this kind of program box checked to make Picasa the default program for that type of file extension. Afterwards, it should open Picasa when you use Edit for that file extension next.

Hey Matt,

You should be able to just delete what you added to remove it, and restore the context menu back to how it was before you added it.

Another option is to do a system restore using a restore point dated before you changed the context menu to undo it.

Soon after i install ReflectMacrium, context menu added itself is normal for almost every program. now this context menu thing is useful, (removing it is easy) but makes it looks messy and i would like to change it. Default program editor and Glary utilities cant change this because ReflectMacrium has it's context menu info within it's dll file, called RShellext.dll, means i must use resource hacker program to edit it.

all other times when i do this, resource hacker worked and info is always there to edit but this time i can't find the "create a macrium image for this partition" inside the .dll file so i looked further with notepad++ and it is indeed within RShellext.dll, just that in resource hacker it shows a bunch of hex and i do not know what or how to edit it. i could try hex, but no experience on it whatsoever.

is there anyway for me to edit this? either with resource hacking tools (with hex) or another method to do this. i could remove the context menu by deleting the dll file but i would really love to have the function, just a shorter name.

i have attached few picture to make it clear of what i need to change, thank you.

A:edit Drive context menu for reflect macrium program

edit: i was able to adjust it with hex editor.. well thats because inside hex editor theres text showing and i simply type over it to save it. but similar problem still remains as i installed hex neo editor, as well as resource hacker both added their own context menu >.<

just like reflect macrium, in resource hacker the neo hex editor showing only hex codes in it's dll file but i tried opening the dll file with its own editor in there couldnt find the thing with context menu >.<. i'll just live with it for now..

Hi, I wanna edit my context menu (right click). I wanna do this kind of things:

-Add a "create new folder" or "create new text document" below the "New" option, so I don't have to do "New/wait it load/select option"

-Delete some Winrar options, such as "compress and email..." and many other options of other programs from the "root" contextual menu.

-Add options directly to the "root" contextual menu, like "Add to VLC's playlist" or "Play with VLC". Right now I have an option that says "VLC" in the "root" contextual menu, and it has another menu in there, that have many options, as those 2 I just mentioned.

-Edit the "Open with..." option, so I can add the programs I want. Right now, I have to go to "Choose default program...", then UNMARK the "open default with this program" cause I don't wanna use it always. Then go "more options", then again "look another app", and finally search for an exe.

-Right click to an archive and, below "copy", I'd like to add a "copy file name" option.

You know, a lot of stuff to do, xD. Thanks!

I'm running Windows 8.1 x64, by the way.

Been able to zap some items from the New context menu, but a few still remain. I've read the tutorials here, searched the registry, I've got ShellExView, ShellMenuView and Glary Pro. They've helped, but not the 7 things below the red bar here, which is what I want to eliminate:

I don't see the above Office options listed in ShellExView. In ShellMenuView, I've got 34 options for Word, 50-60 for Photoshop - can't discern anything in those programs that deals with the New context menu. Flash ActionScript is listed nowhere. When I've looked in the registry (via the tutorial instructions) I can't find those 7 items, either. WinRar lets you customize the shell menu, but that doesn't affect the New menu. Totally baffled, any ideas?

A:Can't fully edit context menu

Hi Colonel Travis,

Have a look at the following application, ShellMenuNew.

It is very easy to use portable utility to trim down the list of items under the ?new? explorer menu. You can disable or remove any existing item or enable it with a click of a button.

You don't need to install it and can simply run the .exe file.

I think this may be what you are looking for.

After discussing lot in this thread, How do I password protect a folder/file?, I finally installed Kruptos 2 Professional.

Now that it is installed and everything seemed to be working fine, this small thing is irritating me a bit.

The context menu item for Kruptos appears only once for every file, which is normal but when I right click on a shortcut, it appears twice. I know that nobody encrypts a shortcut file, but still it looks bad when right clicked (see the images attached).

So can someone say that how do I edit the context menu items for shortcut files from regedit? I have looked up for Kruptos in ContextMenuHandlers and there are many and I can't understand which one to delete from regedit. Please help!

Thanks.

A:How to edit the context menu items for shortcuts?

That is perfectly normal. Here is what I get with a test file and a shortcut to the same:

As you can see, right-clicking on the shortcut icon gives me 2 instances of Edit with Notepad++ in the context menu. The first of these (the upper one) is the same as the one I got when right-clicking the file itself (see above).

There is a difference between the two. The upper one pertains to the file itself (LH image below), whereas the lower one relates to the shortcut (RH image below).

I don't know a method of removing the second instance whilst still keeping the first. Sorry.

I have been using PowerPoint since Office XP. It didn?t have and still doesn?t have an Edit entry on the context menu for .pps or ppsx files. This is very annoying when we want to edit one of those files as I often do. I made the necessary change in the registry, and the Edit shortcut showed up on the context menu for .pps files for XP and 2003, and then also for the ppsx files for and 2007. I exported and saved the modified registry settings to be able to just import them at any time I had to reinstall Office. It was simple, for each new Office version I only had to modify the path for PowerPoint and it worked.

Now, I have tried to do the same for 2010. It does have an Edit key under Shell, but the Edit shortcut doesn?t appear on the context menu. I don?t understand why it doesn?t work now. Am I making any mistake or is there another reason? Can someone, please, enlighten me on finding a way to do it?

Running 64 bit Windows 7 SP1 with all updates

I've been cleaning up my context menu and I have it right where I want it except for one item which I have been unable to find out how to delete regarding text (.txt) files.

I use UltraEdit as my text editor and have set it as the default program to use for text files. When I right click on a text file there are two selections displayed that will open the text document for editing - OPEN and EDIT. If I click on OPEN the default program (UltraEdit) indeed opens with the text file displayed and ready to edit as desired. However if I click on EDIT, Notepad opens with the file displayed and ready to edit. It's no big thing but this will gnaws at me until "I get it the way I want it" and I want the EDIT selection gone.

I can't figure out and haven't found it on the web how to keep EDIT from appearing on the contaxt menu nor can I determine how EDIT is being associated with Notepad. If it insists on being there why isn't it using UltraEdit like I specified...Windows appears to be obfuscating that information but there has to be a way to do this?

I'd appreciate a little help on this one...

Is there a program to modify *all* context menu entries in Windows 8.1 x64?

I've downloaded a few apps but none of them offer the ability to remove context menu entries like "preview", "rotate left/right", "print", etc.

I've manually removed some context menu entries such as Skydrive, but the process is very slow via registry editor, and if i understand correctly it needs to be manually done for ALL file types, which means repeating steps for jpg, jpeg, bmp, png, gif, etc.

Here is an example of what i mean -- When i right click JPG i get this massive menu. I want to remove:

Preview, Set as desktop background, Print, Preview (why is it listed TWICE?), rotate right, rotate left, share with, send to.

Is there any easy way to do this for all file types?

....this is in all likelihood questioning the bleeding obvious, but when I
right-click on either a Document or Picture File, the Context Menu displays one
line with Shredder as it's function.

In the Snip below, I have highlighted the line and expanded it to show the
Sub-Context Menus as well;

Of course I realise that it is obviously a type of File destroyer, but have no
knowledge of how it does this, let alone of the method followed to complete
the task.

Incidentally, when is it best to use this Context tool, as I'm presuming that
once a File is Shredded it is no longer recoverable?

The Sepoys will welcome any expansion to my knowledge base.....

A:Documents and Pictures Context Menu - Shredder; What does it do? How?

When a file is deleted it is normally placed in the recycle bin, which is a reserved area of your hard drive. The file isn't actually deleted, but it's placeholder is removed so that the file can't be seen.

A file shredder or eraser goes further than plain deletion. It uses mathematical algorithms to overwrite the data and make it unreadable.

As far as I'm I'm aware, the Shredder listed in your context menu must be a third-party utility - I've checked the context menu on my system and I don't have it.

This Windows Seven Forums thread provides links to some free file shredders:

Hi.

What I would like to do is having windows context menu (right mouse button menu) staying pernamently there where i open it until I cancel it from there , by other way than using left mouse button.

To explain my reasons. I have program which is causing huge cpu load. Simple way to reduce cpu load and therefore heat, for me is rightclicking (context menu appears) on opened window of program which would then reduce its load to almost 0, while program still running without having to exit it. However this can only be done while im away from PC, because of course when using PC then very next click with mouse would cancel that context menu.

Thus im looking for a way how to keep that menu there, and be able to use mouse normaly. Then when I decide to use program again, to be able to cancel context menu with lets say some keyboard key. Or ctrl + right mouse button for example.

To make it simple: How to make context menu dont dissapear when using left mouse button.

ps; Please dont refer me to any third party programs for this simple task. Im sure it can be edited somewhere in windows, how context menu behaves

maybe what im asking is too hard to comprehend, so let me put it this way.

As an example, when I right click on MY COMPUTER, the order of the items should be:

1. Open
2. Explore
3. Search
4. Delete

For some reason, Explore is at the top, followed by open, search, and delete.

Any ideas would be helpful!

A:How to change context menu order?

On my system, explore is at the top. There really isn't much difference, except open will show a single pane, if Windows Classic folders is used.

To change, in Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types, Folder, Advanced. Click Open. Click, Set Default. OK OK

Is there anyway to change the default editing program for images in Vista? With XP I could right-click on an image, hit Edit, & it would open up my own image editing program. Is there anyway to do this with Vista. Thanks in advance!

A:Change Default "edit" For Images

Right-click on it, choose Open With and Choose Default program.

At the office, when I right click any file, one of the options is SendTo, and under it is Notepad. I'm bored by having to do Open with, and find Notepad in the long list. "Remember always" is not an option, because some extensions aren't .txt and because some .txt files actually open with other apps. That "Send to Notepad" feature gives me the biggest flexibility.

A:How Can I Change Context Menu In Windows Explorer?

Search your hard drive for the SendTo folder. Put a shortcut for Notepad in there. It'll show up in your Send To menu

I have the same problem as someone who previously posted (Craig Holzman) and the post was closed with an answer I don't understand.
The response made reference to a specific registry value that I could not locate within my registry.
I am using Windows XP Professional SP3. Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks,
Dan

As an example, when i right click on MY COMPUTER, the order of the items should be:

1. Open

4. manage

For some reason, Explore is at the top, followed by open, search, and manage, and it's driving me nuts.

I have searched thru the registry to find the entries, but when I get there I can't find any way to change the order of the menu. I have followed the path:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

but once there, I have no options to change.

Am i even close? Is there another registry key I am missing? Any ideas would be helpful!

I have seen over the Internet that this colour could be white, as in this photo:

How do I change the colour from gray to white?

Thanks in advance.

I've been looking, but I can't seem to find how to change the mouse behavior to allow for pressing the right-mouse button down to open the context menu. I would like to be able to press down the right-mouse button to have the menu open, then drag the cursor to a selection and left up on the right-mouse button, opening the selection. Is that possible...?

Thank you

I kind of doubt it. I've never heard of a way to enable a way where all you have to do is right-click, drag, and then lift your mouse button in order to "click" your selection.

I have had it happen several times that I install a new program and it butchers my context menu. This week I installed BulkZip and all of a sudden found many context menu entries gone, especially on the .exe context menu. Uninstalling BulkZip didn't bring anything back.

I also specifically remember I had a really bad case of this with the program FileMenu Tools.

Right now my anti-virus, Advanced System Care Ultimate, has been knocked out of the context menu for files but not for folders. I can't see any place to correct that on the ACSU GUI.

Is there anything you can do to protect your context menu from being ripped up by a new program? Any program that would protect against that? I think it's really obnoxious for a program to do that. Of course, I have no way to predict when it will happen.

I've thought about suggesting to the developer of WinPatrol that he add protection from such meddling as a program feature.

Have other people had this experience?

I sometimes edit lots of PowerPoint files. The context menu does not include "Edit" for these files, so I have to drag the to an empty PowerPoint program window and this involves other gimmicks. That missing commend is very useful for me.

Up to Office 2007 I found a way to add that command to the PowerPoint.SlideShow.x registry key, from where it was absent. Now, the Edit key is already there, so there is nothing to add, but the command does not appear on the context menu.

I have tried to do it with NirSoft's FileTypesMan, but no way. I also tried to modify the existing edit command, but it never shows up on the menu. After more then a couple of hours trying I gave up and reset the registry to the its original.

It must not be that difficult and I must be missing something. Can someone tell me how to do it, please?

Anyone know how to change the underlined key in the Context Menu? Say for example you right click a Folder Favorite in the Nav Pane in Explorer. There's a command that says MyCommand. If the current underlined key is 'M' and 'y' is not taken, how to change it to 'y' then?

In Windows Seven and Vista there are context menu commands to open the folder favorite in the Nav Pane in a new window. But for some reason they are different. I'd like to make them both the same. That way I wouldn't have to think about it. Just right click a Folder favorite and hit the key.

I've looked through the registry. The obvious menu "&" ampersand place holder for the underline is not to be found. A bit of a mystery.

Those are called Accelerator keys and are set in the resource file and compiled into the program so I don't believe they can be altered. There are other ways to create keyboard shortcuts so maybe that could work for you. Here's a tutorial that might help: 20 of the Best of Shortcut and Hotkey Tips for Your Windows PC - How-To Geek

I'm trying to change the color of text whenever I hover the cursor over text in context menus. (please see attached picture to see what I'm talking about) I've tried adding a "HOTTRACKING:COLOR" property in WSB, in addition to a "TEXTCOLOR:COLOR" property in WSB, and I was able to change the color of the text when not highlighted, but whenever it is highlighted, the color remains black.

What I'm wondering is if I can change the highlight color just for context menus, or if it's something that applies across all elements of Windows Explorer. I was able to change the text highlight color in the start menu by changing the hot tracking color, but it's not working for context menus.

A:change context menu font color when highlighted in WSB

Go to Lists, Menus & Tabs > Menu > PopUpItem > Hot > TEXTCOLOR:COLOR and change the text color.

Hi,

Been trying to sort this out, but no luck with my searching.

I am using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free. Everytime I attempt to use the conttext menu to scan a file, I get the UAC prompt, which is extremly frustrating. I know the premium version must add policies to remove this intrusion (as I have it installed on my desktop rig).

Anyone have an idea on how it can be done? Am surprised I wasn't able to source any existing resolutions on the web. Cheers.

A:How to remove Context Menu Program UAC Prompt

You can turn it off. Go to Control Panel -> Security and Maintenance
