Thinkpad Yoga - trouble with cursor jumping and closing programs

Q: Thinkpad Yoga - trouble with cursor jumping and closing programs

Yet another thing seems to be wrong with my Yoga. Every so often, the cursor will jump to the upper right corner of the screen and minimize my maximized window, or to the lower right corner and open up the action center. It does this several times in a row, almost like someone else is controlling the touchpad/mouse. Then it'll suddenly go away, only to come back minutes or hours later. I also noticed that when watching fullscreen videos, the video controls will come up randomly, as if I moved the mouse or touched the touchpad. I tried to uninstall all input devices, rebooting twice and letting Windows reinstall them. I thought it helped, but it didn't. I just updated the Synaptics driver to the latest May 2018 one, but that didn't fix the problem either. Any idea what's going on? Is it the touchpad? The trackpad? The pen? The touchscreen? I read all kinds of crazy ideas on another thread, from putting tin foil under the keyboard, to disabling the wacom digitizer. I haven't tried those yet. I swear, this is the worst purchase I have made in a long time. Lenovo is about to lose a customer for life.

Hope I'm in the right forum for this new model.I have a brand new Thinkpad Yoga (20CD-CT01WW), running windows 8.1 64-bit, 8g RAM.  Intel Core i7-4600U @ 2.10Ghz / 2.70GhzWhen using any progam in desktop mode (first noticed it on Chrome, then Quicken, but really applies to any use), the cursor will randomly jump across the screen, ususally to the upper right, and then without clicking, will close the window I'm working on, often losing my work. Sometimes I'll get random right-click menus without clicking the mouse buttons.I am using the track-point primarily, so thinking it might be inadvertent contact with the touchpad, I disabled all touch-pad functionality, but the problem persists.I ran Norton Internet security, AdAware, and Malwarebytes to look for viruses but didn't find any problems.Just ran Lenovo update, and downloaded the most recent Ultra-Nav Driver.  Now both touch-pad and track-point are using default settings, but the problem still persists.  I'm wondering if this a hardware or driver problem, or a windows 8.1 problem? Please advise.  (home user... neophite, I know just enough about compters to be dangerous.)

I am having a problem with my ThinkPad Yoga in combination with OneLink Pro, closed lid, attached DVI monitor and a logitech mouse. The ThinkPad is running preinstalled Windows 8.1. I did recover it to factory state few times, that doesn't solve following problem: If attached to the OneLink Pro, the cursor jumps from time to time to the bottom right corner of screen. While doing so it also making a click, so icons in taskbar are activated. That happens sporadically, but in overall like once per hour. It does not happen if I let the lid opened.

I also have seen think pad yogas with one link docs do this.More rubbish from lenovo.

Yeah, I have issues with the cursor jumping around as well, although it is not too often. I thought it was something related to the driver and hopefully will be fixed soon. However, regarding the capacitive windows button on the bezel, what do you mean by that? Hello everyone, I'm having a problem that occurs on different Lenovo models as well. The mouse cursor for 'working in background' will become weird / pixelated at random. It'll also shrink and "jump" when it changes from the normal cursor to the pixelated 'working in background' cursor. See image below.  The problem has also been described in the following forums regarding different models.Ideapad 720s 14IKB Cursor/Pointer Pixelated and Jumping When Working in BackgroundMouse cursor jumps when working in background - Yoga 500-15ISKStrange mouse pointer behaviour when working in background - Lenovo Ideapad 510S 14ISK  However the solutions posted there don't seem to work for this particular model, as those solutions seem more like a clunky workaround instead of a professional solution. The solutions offered in the linked posts are as follows:- Disable the Lenovo Utility (but the Caps Lock on-screen indicator will not show and Flight mode hotkey will no longer work)- Install the Wacom Touch Firmware Package V.02.16. (The installer doesn't seem to launch on the Yoga 720 15IKB)- Change the text and icon size scaling in windows to 149% (Which makes things too small on the Yoga 720 15IKB with a 4k screen) Anybody out there who knows what's the real cause of this problem and how to properly fix this instead of one of these workarounds? Kind regards,Rens van der Meer EDIT: I found a new pos... So, I got this computer a few days ago and it works great. Only problem is that every time I switch out of tablet mode or if I open it, my cursor moves up, and I have to tap the trackpoint a lot in order for it to stop. I took it off and I realized that if I hold down the b button hard enough, it actually moves the cursor up. Is there any way to fix this irregular trackpoint behavior? It's probably hardware related, so I might have to send it in for repair (ugh).

Hi, Everyone- when typing on a new Asus EEE 1015, with Win 7, the cursor will suddenly jump backwards to an earlier spot in the text. This happens a lot, and makes it difficult to type anything.

I googled and saw this problem for many systems and OSs, but it seems like mainly a laptop and netbook problem. some people have erduced sensitivity on touchpads, or have updated touchpad drivers, or have installed a program that disconnects the touchpad when the keys are being used.

We know we are not touching the touchpad accidentally. you can really perch your fingers way above, and the jump still happens. We have decreased the sensitivity on the touchpad, and the jumping still happens.

We also have an Asus EEE 1005 Win XP, for almost a year, with absolutely no cursor jumping.

Any info specific to this set-up? I would love to hear any insights, before I go into a long routine of upgraing BIOS, upgrading touchpad drives, etc.

A:Cursor jumping Asus Eee 1015, cursor moves when typing

As the PC is new I would return it under warranty as this is most likely a hardware issue.

The only quick fix that might work is to reinstall the touchpad drivers from the Asus site. You could also check in the touchpad settings to see what is set for making the cursor disappear during typing, change the setting from whatever it is at present and see if that helps.

Hi.Today my thinkpad (X380 Yoga) automatically updated some intel drivers (couldn't figure out which ones) with the Intel driver and support assistand. Afterwards the touchscreen somehow stopped working properly. I can still visually hover over buttons, text fields or program borders, but if I try to click it doesn't work. I can touch, but not click or scroll inside the programs, neither with my finger nor the pen. It's very strange that this only happens on Windows stuff like the taskbar, file explorers and some programs like OneNote or VirtualBox. In Chrome for example clicking and scrolling seems to work perfectly fine. Another strange thing i saw: Under tablet PC settings if I try to calibrate or configure my pen and touch display, it says that there is no pen or touch input available for my display. My display name is: 1. Wide viewing angle & High density FlexView Display 1920x1080 What i already tried:- Checked for hardware problems via Lenovo Solution Center- Checked for driver updates via Intel driver and support assistant and Lenovo Service Bridge- Searched for driver updates manually in the device manager (HID-Confiant Touchscreen, HID-Confiant Pen, Lenovo Pen Device, a lot of Intel Drivers, USB drivers)- Deactivating and activating those device drivers via the device manager- Deleting the device drivers and rebooting to reload them- Load from an older restore point- Reset my PC (Which removed all programs... I've been trying to figure this out and have read all about adjusting my touch pad sensitivity etc but that does not seem to work. Strangely, it happens only when I type a Y. Middle of a word, end of a word where ever there's a Y.

Anyone else have a similar problem?

I'm beginning to think it's a Windows 7 issue and not a touch pad issue.

A:Jumping cursor

Hi Jbatl, I have seen this behaviour before and it is almost definately related to touchpad. (Notice position of the Y key is directly above the touchpad and easily gets touched by your wrist).

To check if this is the issue, disable / turn off the touchpad - it should be an option in the (Synaptics or whatever) touchpad settings.

I was fortunate enough to have an option in my settings to disable the touchpad while typing. Solved my problem.

Hopefully that will fix things for you.

A:Jumping cursor

Hi there
This sometimes appears on laptops and is totally annoying -- making any sort of reliable input almost impossible. It's very difficult to explain this problem to those who've never had it but it almost renders a laptop totally useless.

What 99.9999% of the solution is in most cases is to DISABLE the touchpad of the laptop via either the touchpad driver of the hardware manufacturer itself or failing that is to use the "Generic" synaptics driver and then in the settings disable the touchpad.

Get it from here

Drivers | Synaptics

Note - if you disable the touchpad you will need of course an external mouse -- but I HATE touchpads anyway.

Ensure also your VIDEO driver is up to date and any chipset drivers for your laptop / motherboard have also been installed.

Cheers

Hi and welcome to TSG.

The first thing I would check, for a jumping cursor, is the mouse. That is assuming you are using some kind of optical mouse. If you are, use something like a cotton bud, preferably with a very small amount of cleaning solution (pretty much anything will do) and use it to clean out the lens area on the bottom of the mouse.

Abruptly and immediately after Microsoft automatically updated my computer (without my permission), my cursor started jumping to the top of the screen sporadically making it impossible to run programs normally. Although my first response was to do a System Recovery, for some reason no matter what date I select and whether or not I do it in Safe Mode, I am told that "System Recovery was unable to restore your computer to the event selected." Consequently, I need some help in figuring out what's causing this crazy cursor behavior...and how to fix it. Below is the HijackThis log I just ran

Thanks so much in advance,

Laurie

p.s. Someone has already told me that I'm running too many programs on Start-Up...but I have no idea how to reduce them.

For some reason whenever I'm typing my cursor is randomly jumping without action on my part. The jumping itself isn't random, when it does so it always ends up at the current location of the pointer. So far it has not clicked on any links when it jumps and it hasn't simply moved to a data input box. Only to the pointer location, wherever that is at the time.

I am given no indication of when the cursor will jump and so I frequently end up typing half a sentence in an entirely different location than I started. I've already run the standard Troubleshooting with both regular Help and the HP Support Assistant to no avail.

I'm using an external mouse/external keypad setup and have installed Touchfreeze so I know the touchpad isn't the problem. The Mouse settings are already set to hide pointer while typing, although it doesn't do so. Since I'm not sure what information will be relevent here's all related specs:

Computer: HP Pavillion 17 Notebook PC
OS: WIndows 8.1 64-bit
Microprocessor: AMD A10-5750M APU with Radeon HD Graphics.
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 8650G
System Board: 1984.01.13
BIOS: F.22

Synaptics Touchpad V7.5 on PS/2 Port

Logitech HID-compliant Unifying Wireless Mouse M510
Logitech HID-compliant Unifying Touch Keyboard K400
SetPoint Software Version: 6.65.62

If additional information is required, please let me know. This is driving me crazy, so I really hope someone can help me with this.

Hello BIOS-Pherecydes
Jumping cursor issue is one of the common problem mostly seen from Windows Vista to Win 7 and to current times, usually while typing in word or outlook.
From what I have found, there is no straight fix provided for this problem.
You may have to try different steps but I cannot say which one will fix it.
First you can try these two steps which have worked on the past computers. If it doesn't fix the problem then there are other steps that we can try.
Go to Control Panel ---> Mouse---> Pointer Options and then uncheck "Hide pointer while typing". If it doesn't work, then try disabling the "trackstick" if you have one..
      2. If the above step doesn't work then you may have to download and run this small program called Touchfreeze

I can not guarantee these tips, but they did work for many people .. Please tell us how it is for you.

Thank You -

Sounds like a problem over the touchpad hardware. Call customer service to solve this issue. Best regards.

I have an ACER lap top with Window Vista. When I am typing, whether it may be e-mail messages or any word document, the cursor jumps all over the place. I have to bring it back and keep a constant watch over it. I installed a new mouse, but no improvements. Has anyone else experienced similar problem, and any solutions?

Cheers

Welcome FLTS
Several things to check
Go to search and type device manager
Go to the mouse driver; up to date and functioning correctly?

Run an antivirus scan but update first and make it a full scan
Download and scan with a full malwarebytes scan

Unattach from the internet and see if it happens. This is an important one

Make sure that battery in mouse is new

Make sure that touch pad is not too sensitive; have seen this many times
Type event viewer in search and in the adminsitrative tab look for errors

Try a different port.

Post back with the information

Hi - I have spyware on my computer and recently got a "critical" malware thrown up - which I accidently "allowed". Apart from the fact that the laptop is now grindingly slow, whenever I try to type anything (even in folder boxes) the cursor jumps all over the place - to previous lines or down several cms on the blank page.

I have read someone else's comments that it is the keyboard, but I do believe it is a malware. I've downloaded HiJack This and got a "read out". Oops there goes the cursor - once it starts it seems to speed up. Would like to know how to track the virus down since it doesn't show in any spyware that I've subsequently downloaded.

Help please. I'm okay with software but don't know much about the "workings"!

Make sure that any keys on your keyboard is not stuck, specially left-arrow and home keys.

My wife has a two of so year old Acer laptop,  just in the last couple of weeks when typing in Outlook or posting something on Facebook, the cursor jumps all over the page.  She uses only an external mouse (never the touchpad).  Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thanks.........rlight

This is normally dirt/dust in the hole where the IR laser comes out on the bottom of the mouse. Just give it a good clean.

I re-formatted Vista after backing up everything.
I reinstalled Vista after a complete wipe and found all
the drivers and everything was well.
As far as appearances were concerned.
The problem started a week or so afterwards.
Every time that I am typing, either in Word or when
I have a chat window open or whatever, the cursor jumps around to
somewhere random in the middle of the text and if I'm not paying
attention it screws me up. Sometimes the
chat window will minimize while I'm chatting or even close. I thought it may
be some kind of keyboard drivers I may be missing but
I'm not sure.
Has anyone ever run into anything like this??

Oh, and I made sure it's not me accidentally tapping the touchpad.
