Want to Unfreeze a Frozen Notebook Mouse (Touchpad)

Q: Want to Unfreeze a Frozen Notebook Mouse (Touchpad)

Windows XP Pro.

At the office I use an external mouse on my computer.

At the end of the day I (usually) unplug the mouse before going into standby mode.

When I forget to disconnect mouse before going into standby mode...when I get home and resume my touchpad ends up being frozen and won't work.(Note: Built-in notebook keyboard does work however).

When this happens the only way I know how to correct the problem is to restart the computer.

Is there some magic or alternative way to unfreeze my mouse without having to restart the computer?

Preferred Solution: Want to Unfreeze a Frozen Notebook Mouse (Touchpad)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ctrl \ Alt \ Delete. Click Processes and see if the mouse app is still running. If it is, right click on it and end processes.

Extremely frustrated I've looked and tried to find a solution to no avail. When the notebook boots up, it gets to the login screen, I wouldn't be able to do anything at that point but I can log in because I have a fingerprint scanner, from there I'm 100% dead in the water. The only way to shut down is to hold down the power button. While the computer is in bootup, I have touchpad/keyboard function, I can escape to boot options, BIOS, repair, etc. and have normal functionality while there but not in safe mode. I have ran SFC with commands several times, chkdsk with commands several times, nothing changes. SFC says it found problems but was not able to fix all of them and the last chkdsk found nothing wrong.

Here are the events leading up to:
* had disk errors and bad sectors in old hard drive (could not repair)
* cloned old hard drive to new hard drive (there were errors but the new hard drive booted and worked for the most part correctly)
* in the process of trying to fix missing setup files for applications and other miscellaneous small issues, I ran troubleshooting, updates, chkdsk, sfc, etc. removed various applications, and added a few, nothing worked. I installed Revo uninstaller to remove Kaspersky Internet Security as it is THE MOST stubborn application to remove I've ever experienced. The reason I mention that is because I went through my computer trying to find the leftover files even after Revo because Kaspersky was still running after re-installing it and uninsta... Read more

A:Frozen touchpad and keyboard on HP Pavillion dv6 3225dx Notebook

If you have (and should have) a USB keyboard and mouse connect them and see if they will work.
Since your file system was already corrupted you cloned the bad files to the new drive.
If the USB devices work you should do a Repair Install.
If that doesn't work do this: Using System Recovery, Factory Reset and Minimized Image Recovery Options HP Pavilion dv6-3225dx Entertainment Notebook PC | HP? Support
From this tut:
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

On newer models HP Recovery may offer a Minimized OS Recovery option when booting from F11, which retains only the OS, Recovery Manager, HP Support Asst, and HP Wireless LAN. This is as close to a clean reinstall as you can get without doing one yourself.
● If you clean reinstall only to C and leave all other partitions intact, F11 Recovery key should still work later if you need it.
● You can also Extract HP 3rd Party Software from RecovCD.
● Problems with volume control lighting and HP Quick Launch buttons have been dealt with here where you can also get further support.

Got a user who has a Acer 5100-3583 notebook, the keyboard and touchpad are unresponsive after multiple reboots and standard trouble shooting yield no results.? The unit is only 14 months old and out of warranty.
Any clues?

It will read from DVD-ROM drive as it reads a DVD movie when inserted.
No USB devices such as keyboard and mouse work either.

A:Acer 5100-3583 notebook keyboard & touchpad frozen..?

- in windows, press Fn+F7 (or the combination you have to activate/deactivate touchpad
- In the bios (press F2 when it appears the ACER screen when booting), be sure that the Tpad is enabled.
Purchase a usb mouse and keyboard and by pass the problem.
Restore to an earlier date to make sure the configuration wasn't dumped somewhere along the line.
Reformat the system.
Check with Acer Site under troubleshooting to see if there are any other solutions.
Last resort and if your capable open casing to check for loose connections. ( It does appear Acer has problems with touchpads frequently)
Luck to you and this is about all the thoughts I came up with right now. Let us know...Jazz

Just this morning I have begun encountering a very annoying glitch where the mouse pointer keeps feezing for a second or two on the screen then unfreezing for a few seconds, then repeating it again OVER AND OVER AND OVER!!! It's driving me crazy, help appreciated!!

Hi kenny1,

First and foremost, please post your computer specs. Posting computer specs definitely helps us troubleshoot computer issues more efficiently. May I ask, are you using a desktop or laptop computer? What is the brand/model of the mouse device? If your computer is a laptop computer, are you using the touchpad that's on the laptop or a USB mouse connected to the laptop?

Check the device manager...do you see any exclamation marks on any of the hardware components? Try disconnecting and reconnecting the mouse. Also, you can try re-installing the mouse drivers. Hope everything works out well for you.

Hello Tristan,

Welcome to the forums.

Been a while since I had a laptop, but I seem to remember there being a setting on what to do with the touchpad when the mouse is plugged in. Unfortunately I don't remember where and have no way of finding it.

Have you tried rebooting with the mouse unplugged?

Sorry I can't be of more help. The manual for the laptop ought to have that info in it somewhere.

Hi guys,

New here, so I hope I'm not out of line asking for help, and that I'm asking correctly. I've exhausted my own ideas on this but the problem is driving me IN.SANE.

When using an external (USB) mouse with my ASUS Win7 laptop, the mouse randomly lifts up and re-clicks while clicking or while dragging (despite the button remaining consistently depressed), resulting in selection of the wrong objects, inadvertent double-clicks, and incorrect dragging. From what I can tell, this affects only the left click and not the right.

Laptop touchpad - no problem. Everything works fine with the built-in touchpad.
Another mouse - same problem. These are wired mice, so it's not a battery or connection issue.
Another USB port - same problem in all four. There's no visible issue with the motion of the mouse/cursor, so it seems to be communicating OK via USB.
Safe Mode - no problem, from what I can tell. The wired USB mouse seems to click and drag as normal in Safe Mode.
Mouse Settings - no effect. Adjusting the click/double-click/drag settings doesn't seem to change anything.
System Resources - no effect. Clicking/dragging seems to show the same results in the RAM/CPU monitors whether I'm having the problem (with the mouse) or performing the same actions without the problem (with the trackpad).

What haven't I ruled out? What else could be causing the issue?

The problem came on suddenly after about a year, but I... Read more

Hey mate, and welcome,

Possible problem:
1. Mouse itself is bad. Either the button itself or internally
2. Driver is not at its best

Going to the mouse manufacture website to download the most recent driver for your Windows 7, either 32 or 64 bit. If it doesn't work, try without any driver (so that windows driver takes over).

My laptop touchpad has been freezing up periodically, seemingly triggered by my use of the scrolling portion of the pad, though using that portion of the pad does not always result in my touchpad freezing up.

Prior to this issue, I had run ComboFix and logged onto the forums to post my log (post located here)--other than that, I haven't been doing anything unusual with my laptop recently.

Any helpful suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi bobbies -
How often is this problem occuring (regular / daily / weekly / once or twice) and have you used a mouse at all to see if this helps.
I find that even on my 12 month old Win7 Toshiba that a mouse cured these problems.

A laptop with XP ?? 8+ years old may have worn sensors or a build up of dust etc under the touchpad at times -

Try to clean under the pad (very carefully) or try a mouse and see if there is any change -

Thank You -

A few weeks a go a bought a new LG netbook. Tonight I turned it on and the cursor is just stuck there in the middle of the screen.

I don't use a mouse, just the touchpad, so I can't even attempt to do anything. Everything else seems to be working fine in the background upon boot up and on the desktop, but the cursor won't budge.

Tried to open control panel but obviously can't do that with the cursor stuck. Any options the DON'T involve me having to buy a new USB mouse?

How can I fix this?

A:My netbook touchpad is frozen. Can't do anything! Now what?

You can go into device manager, delete the touchpad and restart the system and see if that clears it up but it sounds like a hardware issue with either a loose ribbon cable to the touchpad or its just burned out (it happens).

If the netbook is new though perhaps its still under warranty and you can get an RMA for it from the manufacturer?

I can't use my touchpad. My arrow/cursor is frozen in the middle of the screen.

1) I can still use external mouse

2) I saw in similar post somebody suggested using memory tool scan from microsoft. I did find that but when I clicked on it the owner was not microsoft but some other name. I am tired of downloding stuff on my computer and find out later that they are spyware etc..

3) I purchased Norton 360 which does not help

4) I ran system restore, did not help. First when I ran system restore it gave me error message "unspecified error during system restore" I ran it in safemode and now I could restore. Then I had to do the updates again. Rebooted toshiba laptop agai and the cursor still frozen.

Could you please help? What help could I use from Microsoft Help ? Most diagnostic stuff I downloaded so far wants me to buy their product? What shall I do?

Norton and vista usually dont go well together. I would use Avast or AVG antivirus, they are free.

Have you tried finding drivers for the touchpad? You could try to install new drivers or just reinstall current ones. Also have you tried turning the touchpad off and then on again? Is the touchpad on?

Just a thought

A:TouchPad cursor frozen

Hp laptops have a small pinhole in one corner of the touchpad. It is actually a toggle that, when double tapped, turns on or turns off the touchpad. I believe it possible your Toshiba may have the same touchpad which may be the source of your problem. Double or single tap the toggle and you may unfreeze it.

Hi I'm having a problem that I really can't seem to resolve: the image of my cursor freezes about 5 seconds after I log in, but the actual pointer still works i.e. I can still use the mouse, it's just that the cursor doesn't correspond to what I'm actually pointing at. At first this occurred randomly, sometimes after 25-30 mins of use, but now it does it every time, straight away.

One way I've found to get around it is to turn on mouse trails at the lowest setting, this lets me see the trails of the cursor (at the correct location), which at least lets me know what I'm clicking on.

I've tried:
Removing and reinstalling the drivers
Trying a different (ps/2) mouse
Trying a different USB port
Removing spyware etc with Spybot, AVG
Updating to the latest drivers
Updating Windows (which is when it changed from being random to every time)

Any ideas on this one?
Thanks in advance! James

Hi All:
A few weeks ago I started to download DVDShrink from what looked like a perfectly legitimate company site. After I clicked to download the program it began to install itself. At the same time all kinds of alarms went off - Comodo, Malwarebytes, etc. - and I quickly shut down.
After booting up I ran a quick Mbam scan and it found 32 infected files which I deleted. I then ran a full Mbam scan and it found a bunch more. Later I also ran full Mbam and Avast scans but this time around neither came up with anything. I also used ERUNT to replace the Registry with a clean copy made earlier.
For a few days everything ran OK but then Firefox began to freeze up whenever I brought up a page with a Youtube video on it. Then other things started to freeze - Task Manager, etc. - and now it's reached the stage that the computer won't boot up properly at all. Almost everything is frozen. The computer won't even start in Safe Mode. At best it just brings up my mouse pointer (which is working) and my desktop wallpaper but nothing more.
Different Windows messages have appeared at times one of which said something to the effect that Windows was stopping to prevent further damage. There is a separate RESTORE section on the drive for restoring the computer to factory settings but I can't access it. Since I can't get into the computer to do anything at all I'm wondering if there's any way of being able to get the com... Read more

Troubleshooting a fairly new HP laptop. Had been infected with a virus. Cleaned it all up but was experiencing erratic mouse behavior. The customer claimed the behavior started when he got hit with infection. While the pointer itself moves fine the left and right mouse buttons intermittently act like they are being held down causing the pointer to drag and highlight everything in site. At other times the buttons do nothing at all. At other times the left mouse button triggers a rightclick menu. And at other moments all mouse control is fine. This occurs equally on the touchpad or when using an external USB mouse. I tried disabling the touchpad completely but the problem still occurs when using the external mouse. I tried updating the sypatics touchpad driver but that made no difference either. I finally resorted to wiping and completely reinstalling windows but the problem still persists. For the hell of it I then updated the BIOS firmware but that made no difference either. All keyboard function work fine so I have been having to resort to using the arrow keys and alt tab and such to navigate around. I ran a Passmark Burn in Test and everything passed.
A couple of additional points. I ran the Hirens Boot CD which is similar to the Ultimate Boot CD. If you don't want to lose your data, download Ubuntu and boot your computer with it. You can then retrieve your important data before you format the drive.

If anyone can help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it (I'm currently relying on my fingers and the touchscreen which isn't as convenient)

I have tried both USB and Bluetooth mice, and neither one allows the proper action: the touchpad should be enabled without a mouse, and the touchpad should be disabled with a mouse.  That's how it works on other systems.  It just doesn't work at all on this system.
I suspect there is some interaction between the touchpad and the touchscreen that is interfering with this setting.  But I have another laptop with a touchpad and a touchscreen, and the mouse detection works there (it's not a DELL).
Yes, I have toyed with the idea of deleting the DELL touchpad control application and installing a "stock" Synaptics touchpad driver.  But I don't want the DELL  "update" app to overwrite it with the DELL touchpad control app every time it sees "the wrong driver" loaded.  And I don't want to take the chance that the touchpad driver and the touchscreen driver are somehow linked together, thus disabling one when I disable the other.
Any ideas on how to get the "Disable Touchpad when USB Mouse Present" action working would be welcome.

This is really starting to annoy the hell out of me. I just picked up a Microsoft Bluetooth mouse, the Notebook 5000 mouse to be exact for my home entertainment center.

I have my PC ran to a monitor and a 55 inch Samsung LED LCD TV for watching movies etc. The problem is, the HDMI cord is run threw the wall so the PC is in another room so I cant use the normal mouse on the PC. I bought a bluetooth mouse due to the increased range but I'm having nothing but issues.

I have the Microsoft Bluetooth dongle btw, didn't come with the mouse, the mouse actually comes with no dongle.

Anyway it connects fine but if I stop using it for like an hour or whatever it disconnects and nothing I do will reconnect it unless I take my other mouse, go into bluetooth devices, delete it and readd it all over again.

WHY THE HELL does it keep doing this lol?

It's very annoying, I sit down to watch a movie and discover I cant start it without first going into the other room and readding my mouse.

I'm well within range and I've tried moving the bluetooth mouse to the same room as the PC to use it with the PC and it still does the same thing.

It is supposedly a good mouse (Kensington without the ball, movement powered by light/laser) so I don't know what the deal is. Can anyone help???

A:Frozen mouse!!!

I could be many things,
starting with a broken wire on the mouse/driver or software problem/a trojan horse installed on the system and someon is messing with you. etc.

First, I'd suggest to get a spare mouse and use it for a while, see if keeps freezing. If it does, then you know the mouse it's ok and we need to start looking somewhere else.

You can get cheap mouses for 2 or 3 dollars.

I have a frozen mouse on my laptop and don't know what to do. It's my wife's computer and the mouse kept freezing last night. Today I was going to download all the basics (HiJack, CC Cleaner, etc.) and now it is completely frozen even after rebooting twice... UGH!

Are you using an external mouse (if so PS/2 or USB) or the finger sensor?

Recently I updated Skype. No problems really, other than it changed my start up page to msn. A few other annoying things were happening after the update so, I decided to use system restore as I have many times to undo other problems from updates.
The nearest restore date just happened to be about eight days before,on the same day as my renewing of Kaspersky. But I went ahead.
When it restarted,a few of the normal start up programs began to load including Skype, and thats where it stalled. mouse is frozen in the middle of the screen.
Have bought another mouse, even used it in a different port.
Have started in safe mode and bios setup, the keyboard arrows work ok but I cant operate this machine without the mouse
Please help
still run XP

Please try shutting down, unplugging the power cord, (remove battery if it's a laptop) then press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds. Then you can replug it in and try it.

My system is now "frozen". On the screen is my two ientities. The mouse pointer is located midway between them and WILL NOT move. I downloaded a NVIDIA update last nigth that may be the culprit, but I cannot do anything because the computer is frozen. There is a round blue icon lower left of the screen the looks like a blue clock. I am not sure it was there before. Any help is greatly appreciated. The mouse is not wireless, teh light is on in the mouse, it is just as if the buttons do not work.

A little more info on the problem- When I hit F12 during rebooting, and test the system, the mouse WORKS FINE. But when I try to log onto the system, aht the identities page, the pointer and two identities form a perfect pyramid in the lower middle half of the page and the mouse pointer is just flat out frozen. It isn;t the mouse, somehow my pdientities login page is frozen.

You didn't mention in your question what type of mouse connection you are using, PS2, USB or Wireless. Equally, does it have a roller ball or optical input ?

Lately my mouse has been freezing up. Is there possibly a computer infection or do I need a new mouse? I have posted a HT log. Also, what is a good freeware program to lock the computer up with a password without having to log off? THanks

The mouse of my PC (Windows XP) freezes upon start-up when the log in screen appears. I can still log in with the arrow keys, but the mouse remains un-operational right in the center of the screen. I tried to clean the mouse, tried another mouse too, tried also the connection to the m.board for any "wire" problems. Still no result. Has this happened to anyone? This PC is often used by my 12 yo daughter, who chats a lot and uses AOL. How can I re-install the driver or do anything else with the keys only? Any help will be appreciated. Thank you in advance

Go to the Mfg. Web site an DL the latest drivers - it should "self install"

You may have a corrupt driver.

Hello. I have been working on my friends Pavillion 6630 computer. I installed windows 2000 and now 90% of the times when the machine boots the mouse will not respond. I tried going into the safe mode and that worked for a while and then same thing happened in safe mode. I swapped the mouse with another one and still nothing. I thought the BIOS may have a bad battery and I changed that and still no luck. The settings in the BIOS are set correctly. I deleted the mouse so windows would see it but it didn't work either. I am going to get a USB mouse tomorrow but if any one has heard of something like that I would appreciate the input. LS

A similiar mouse problem had happened to me a few weeks ago and it was due to a broken cpu fan mount (causing overheating I suppose). I had the fan mount replaced and so far no problems.

From Safe Mode (F8 right after PC starts and before Windows logo) uninstall whatever you installed, or perform System Restore. You may want to backup any valuable data first.
