Dell Inspirion 1150 Laptop--dying a slow death?

Q: Dell Inspirion 1150 Laptop--dying a slow death?

My laptop shuts down at random intervals--although I think it is more based on the heat coming from the power than a Windows error. I have taken the battery out and just use it with the plug. Also when I try to do a disk cleanup it hangs up at the compress old files part and does not move past that and then usually shuts down. I ran a full McAfee scan yesterday and nothing was found. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Dell Inspirion 1150 Laptop--dying a slow death?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,Every week, my kids go to their aunt's house for a piano lesson, and for the last five or six weeks, while they're doing their lesson, I have been trying to get her computer back up and running. First I'll describe the problems she's currently having, and then I'll give you the back story so you know how we got to where we are.The machine: Gateway desktop circa 2007Windows XP Home SP230GB, 2.4Ghz, 256MB RAMThe problems: 1. Last week, right after user account login, "RUNDLL Error: WNNT/uwipijovapu.dll Access is denied"2. On starting up IE8, AVG ResidentShield quarantined "Trojan.Hiloti" the path of which was directed to uwipijovapu.dll3. Now, right after user account login, "RUNDLL Error: WNNT/uwipijovapu.dll The specified module could not be found"4. Mozilla Firefox takes 3-4 minutes to start up, IE8 takes about 30-40 seconds5. Ad Aware 2007 wouldn't open, and yet in Task Manager, the program aawservice.exe is claiming 30K+ of system resources. When I click "end process" the computer is slightly faster, but still still slower than it should be (and the Firefox problem is still there). I installed a fresh copy of Ad Aware 2007, and the program works now, but I still get the aawservice.exe problem.6. "Run:services.msc" doesn't list aawservice.exe at all.6. In "Add/Remove Programs" there are no programs listed.7. Malwarebytes and AVG Free find nothing.8. Disk has been defragmented. Init... Read more

Computer only runs successfully in Safe Mode (networking optional) Windows Explorer "has encountered an unexpected error and needs to close" pops up every single time I start my computer. Run DLL as an App error message comes up almost every time I try to run a program. I can ONLY access my computer though Task Manager and MS DOS. Windows tells me that it cannot find rundll32.exe and basesrv.dll - Tried to resolve rundll32.exe by putting windows xp Pro in and installing it on existing partition and not changing user settings and files. When it was 53% installed it said "cannot copy basesrv.dll" could not complete install - When I skipped file to continue install, it rebooted and could not run b/c basesrv.dll was missing. Help! My whole business is on this dumb computer and I don't know if I can get ahold of a 5GB flash drive right now so I can get rid of this crazy thing!

A:Windows dying slow death..

When in task manager - Go File > New > Type in sfc /scannow. Should hopefully replace those missing files. It may ask for your XP CD - just insert it and let it do it's business.

Please help revive my computer - I'm running win98 and a few months back I got a suspicious 900 # charge on my phone bill (didn't pay it) and that's when it started going downhill.

It started with an error: "error loading wnim.dll, the system cannot find the file specified" and computer was locking up, not running some programs and taking about 5 minutes to boot up.

I now have a "error loading boln.dll, the system cannot find the file specified" My internet explorer takes minutes to close, I can't run my DVD player, and many other programs don't open at all.

I ran "hijack this" and here are the results:

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

Please subscribe to this thread to be notified of fixes as soon as they are posted by our Team. To do this, please click the "Thread Tools" button located in the original thread line and selecting "Subscribe to this Thread".

There seems to be no anti-virus application installed on this machine. Without one, you're vulnerable to every piece of malware that is floating around out there. I urge you to install an anti-virus program as quickly as possible. Please choose one from these 3 free programs that are available for home use: AVG Anti-Virus
Avast Home Edition
BitDefender Free Edition v7

Save the next instructions in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then. You should not have any browsers on..

If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!. .

I have been asked to look into a problem with a Dell inspiron 1150 laptop concerning an intial BSOD error which is intermittent and has happened twice and only twice in the last week according to its owner.

I witnessed the error today but unfortunately did not note any particulars of the error. What I did notice was that the error happened when the power was supplied by the AC adaptor. The hard drive emitted a continuous clicking noise as if it were trying to boot after and at the BSOD. On turning the laptop over to its underside with the BSOD on screen, I noted that the fan was still.

On the BSOD, on pressing the power on button with power supply in, the BIOS reports that there is no bootable device and does not provide any access to a HDD menu in setup. On removing the power supply jack and rebooting from the battery pack, the laptop boots perfectly.

While writing this post, the laptop has emitted two click type noises and the screen has frozen.
I am now of the humble opinion that there is an overheating problem here since the underside of the laptop is warm and the fan has stopped - - at present the laptop turns on then swiftly back off again regardless of where the power is sourced.

I have advised the owner to purchase a cool mat to alleviate the heat build up since there is a paltry sized fan supplying air flow to the components.

Is this a common problem with Dell inspiron laptops, all laptops or is there a fundamental hard drive problem approaching. I w... Read more

In this case I would call Dell tech support they may be of some help and have them check the part number of the AC Adapter for the unit. It may be the wrong one. If the unit boots which apparently it does I suggest until you verify the proper power supply that you do not use the pwoer supply, if the polarity is wrong for the computer and I think it is there could be damage to the computer, the noise you hear from the hard drive is probably the hard drive running backwards or trying to.

As for the BSOD if you can get the error message for us and/or Dell tech support it would be most helpful

Here's my story. I've had this laptop for quite a while (over 2 years) and it worked fairly well until recently. It began overheating constantly and shutting off. Finally it just wouldn't even turn on anymore. Someone Dell savy suggested I have the motherboard replaced. I did. Nothing changed. When I hit the power button the fan turns on and it sounds like the computer is trying to boot but nothing happens. The screen stays blank. I then shutit off manually and there is a brief flash of light from the screen which leads me to believe the display is working properly. It recognizes when it is plugged in and charges fine. I tried the following: taking the battery out and booting it while it is plugged into the wall, unplugging it from the wall and booting it from the battery, booting it while hooked up to a crt monitor (just in case it was the display) and booting it from a windows xp disk. None of these things made a difference. I was thinking of trying to boot it from a flash drive or a floppy disk. I can't find the dell recovery disks that it came with but honestly, I doubt they do any good. Can someone shine some light on this situation please? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, ;let me see if I can get somewhere.. The jucheck.exe is the Java update verification process. This process will check on the internet for available updates for the Java software installed on your computer. Just out of warranty(of course). Recently i noticed these moving bubbles(circles) that are gray and white translucent popping up on the left side of the screen and when they do mouse take on a life of its own and windows start opening and closing and all hec breaks loose like the laptop is possessed. then just as quickly it sometimes stops on its own- other times if i move the screen a bit forward or backward it stops.Other times thicker vertical bars show up along with the circular bubbles and again the laptop freaks out and windows open and close and shrink and enlarge without me even touching the mouse pad. All drivers are up to date-even bios and all win10 updates are fine as well. No new software added at the time or since the issue. It happens sometimes and not always. If i move the screen all the way back and put pressure on it the black likes will show up.Not always but sometimes. My feeling is this has something to do with the cable that connects the screen to the main part of the laptop but i just dont know how to get to it to maybe seat it better if it is the issue...if anyone has any ideas please do let me know.Thank you

I'm trying to work out if my Dell desktop computer (a strong XPS 8700) is dying or not, or if it is just one component that needs replacement (my preference).  The computer is high-performance but 3 1/2 years old.  It has not always been turning on the first time when I press the power button and this problem seems to be getting progressively worse.  Today, it would not load some web pages (it loaded some but not others), and one program stalled and would not stop even with End Task.  I already ran the full start-up diagnostics and apparently everything was fine.  I also did a full scan with Kaspersky Total Security (the strongest version) and apparently everything was fine there as well.  Please help!  Thanks!

Hello all,
Wanted a second opinion on a Dell Inspiron 1150 lcd not working. Friend brought it to me and said the monitor had stopped working. When you hit the power button the notebook spins up and sounds like it is running but nothing happens on the screen at all.

I tried hooking up an external monitor and hitting FN +F8 to toggle the video between the CRT and LCD but its not working. I tried shining a flashlight on the screen to see if maybe the backlight had stopped working but can't see anything with that either.

I also flipped it over and removed the back panel for the video card / lcd connection and made sure it was seated correctly. Nothing is working. The one thing I find strange is that when you turn it on, the power button itself does not light up, but the lights on the front are working and I can hear the drive spinning.

When I hook up the power cable to the back of the laptop though, the battery recharging light never comes on and the other lights go dark. Thinking maybe a bad motherboard?

Any second thoughts? Thanks in advance for advice / opinions.

Possible bad video card; but, the fact that the power light doesn't turn on worries me that it is something worse.

I upgraded my Dell Inspiron 1150 Cpu from a 2.6 celeron to a 3.2 P4 mobile cpu.
the machine booted fine and worked fine for some time.
though after a while it shut down due to a over heat and now when i boot the screen is blank,
the fan comes on , the hard drive starts and shuts down then the fan stops.though the power light stays on.
I reinstalled the 2.6 and everything is as it was before the upgrade.
I know this 3.2 should work because through research I found that others have used a 2.8 P/N SL725 with no problems
and the 3.2 P/N SL77R both have the same specs.
I am at a loss.
**note** I have up dated the Bios to the latest A07, updated the chipset. its a fresh install of Windows xp pro OS with all
the updates... I thought i might have cooked the CPU (3.2) and ordered a new one.installed and got the same results at boot up.

Hello everyone.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150. Yesterday, I quick opened it up to give it a quick clean out. When I put it back together, it wouldn't start at all. So, I had a friend of mine who knows more about computers open it up today and look at it. He was unable to make any diagnosis whatsoever. From what he could tell, everything looked fine.

I was wondering if anyone had been experiencing problems before with this laptop and what they did. Is there any way of telling what is wrong?

A:Dell Inspiron 1150 Problems

You are very very brave, opening a laptop.

While they are hard to get into at times, even harder is the task of reassembly with it actually going at the conclusion.

Most likely its a connection problem, but you give us absolutely no clues as to what happens when you power it up as to any lights. Problem is there are several thousand possibilities. What -exactly- did you do when you opened it up, what did you disconnect etc.

Did you use any anti-static procedures (antistatic mat, wrist strap etc?)

would it be a big job to replace a motherboard in a dell inspiron 1150 and would it be worth it cost wise

A:dell inspiron 1150 not working

Where are you going to get the Motherboard for such an old laptop from? Considering that it would be almost a given that any motheboard you find for it is going to be a used motherboard, and that some pretty high level of skills would be required, it would probably cost as much or more than buying a new laptop in the long run. Repalcing the motherboard is in essence building a new computer from used parts. If you have the equipment and the skills needed to do the job yourself, it probably would not be worth it.

I would like to get all important files from my old 1995 Winbook FX laptop to a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop. The Winbook diskette driver doesn't work anymore and therefore I cannot save my work on diskettes; at that time, the Winbook CD-Rom could not write/save files on CDs yet; and the laptop has all parallel ports.
If I get an HDD Pocket, will I be able to trasnfer my files??? What kind should I buy? In a store or per Internet???
Thanks in advance for all good suggestions.

A:From '95 Winbook FX to Dell Inspiron 1150

Find someone with a normal PC, that has a CD-writer.
Then buy a 2.5"-3.5" adapter, take the harddisk out of the old laptop, insert in that PC, retrieve the files and burn them onto a CD.

Any advice would be much appreciated for my computer problem below. I will try to include as much information as possible but not having a great understanding of computer systems please ask if more information is needed.

Basic Problem (detailed information below): My laptop won't write/burn onto cd or dvd when it once did with no issues. The computer still recognises, reads, plays both cd's and dvd's with no problems at all. I think something is conflicting with something else but don't know what.

To write to a dvd I am using Record Now Version 7.3

I click "Video Disk" option
(Up the top of Record Now it says _NE DVDRW 9 (D: ) DVD-R 4488 MB free)

* A pop up box appears "MyDVD has detected that DMA is turned off for one or more of the recording devices attached to the system. In order to successfully write to the device, DMA should be turned on - refer to you operating system manual or use Windows help for instruments on how to do this"

By clicking "OK" I am taken to "SONIC MyDVD.
I select "Create or modify DVD VIDEO PROJECT".
I load my project and press "burn"

The program beings planning video and audio, ordering files for video etc., then cancels and ejects disc:

"Could not complete last command because: Device Error - Sense Code (5 30 05) - Cannot Write Medium - Incompatible Format - Write (OSErr, 339973)"

I am trying to install a DELL TrueMobile 1150 series 11 Mbs Wireless LAN Adapter card into my Sony Vaio laptop so I can access the WLAN in our home for broadband access.

My research shows that the driver comes standard on the Win 98 install CD. Only problem is that I don't have the external CD Rom that originally came with the unit. OS is Win 98 and am looking for help locating a downloadable driver file for this card. Tried Google and most references to the card refer me to the Win 98 CD. Is there any place where I can download this driver to the laptop desktop (via dialup connection), then install the driver using the Browse feature of Add Hardware?

Thanks in advance for any help.

So I found my old Inspiron 1150 in my garage earlier and I've decided to try and revive it. The first problem would be the battery, whenever the laptop is on charge, the orange light indicating charge is blinking. After reading the manual I determined that it was because the battery is defective and I need some help with the specifics of replacing a battery. Ex: Do I have to consider it's capacity? Rating? I'd seriously appreciate replacement batteries.
FYI: The battery model is Li-ion 6T473

A:Dell Inspiron 1150 | Need help with battery replacement

First thing to verify is that the system starts up on AC only -- without the battery.  If it does not, more than just the battery is faulty (likely the mainboard).
This system has a resale value of well under $50 -- putting more than that into a battery or repair makes very little economic sense.  It's a 13 year old budget notebook -- if it works on AC power, use it that way - - if not, recycle it.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 which I was given recently. The USB ports don't register devices. Like a similar thread from several years ago The USB Contollers have been uninstalled and allowed to auto re-install. No change. Also the USB keyboard & mouse drivers have been un-installed & allowed to re-install automatically.

Device Manager reports the controllers and root hubs are working properly.

A Transcend "Jet_Flash" 2 Gb USB memory stick does show the power light. It does not however begin to flicker indicating that the USB isn't talking to the computer.

I also performed a hardware reset (i.e. power on with no battery). This also failed. There are no entries in Event Viewer indicating a failed USB registration event.

I do have drivers from Dell which have not yet been loaded (via DVD). This is my next step, installing updated drivers, and a BIOS flash. After setting a restore point of course. The computer is running XP Home. All other devices are working correctly. There are no other USB devices.

If the ports are bad would this prevent power being obtained by the USB device?

The questions are is it possible to replace the ports as I assume that they aren't built in to the M/board but attached by a cable link?

Has anyone else found a solution for this problem ?

I'm considering purchasing a Dell Inspiron 1150 with a 40GB hard drive. If I wanted to later add another 40GB, is there room to add an additional drive or would I have to purchase an 80GB drive and transfer the contents of the old drive to the new one?

A:More than one hard drive in a Dell Inspiron 1150?

No, you cannot add hard drives to a laptop. Yes, you can copy the 40GB contents to the 80GB using an adapter or an USB enclosure and possibly a desktop computer.

I've been requested at work (Maybe not always a good idea to let someone see the "cool new" Windows 7 running on your desktop) to install Windows 7 RC on a Dell Inspiron 1150. The install was pretty clean without much trouble except i'm stuck with the Display being set to the Generic PnP with a terrbile 640 X 480 setting. I've updated the VGA adapter to the correct Intet graphic Controller. Still researching for info on the fix for this. But wondering if anyone else has already delt with this issue.

Well it seems that Windows 7 doesnt like the Intel Drivers for the Video Card. A restarts it defaults back to the Standard VGA Adapter.

My Dell 1150 has always had some problems. First, it would over-heat and shut down, and it did this only after having it for around a year. I fixed to over-heating issue by taking out the heat sink and fan and blowing all the dust away with a can of compressed air, and also using a chill mat to set my laptop on. Now, about a month ago the power lights on my computer began flickering on and off. To fix this problem I would fiddle with the ac adapter power cord until the lights stayed on. The problem began to to the point that when the Ac Adapter was plugged in it wouldnt charge the computer at all. So, I thought this was a power adapter problem and I bought a new one but I still have the same problem. The battery will charge if I put enough pressure on the plug into the socket on the back of my computer but thats the only way it will work.

Anyway, what im thinking is that the previous over-heating has ruined the socket where the ac adapter plugs into the computer. Could this be possible? Is it easy to fix? Suggestions?

I've been working with this Dell Inspiron laptop for a few days. I took the machine apart and applied thermal compound to the base of the heatsink (which rests on top of the CPU) and put a minimal amount on the top of the CPU itself.
The main problem with this model is that it shuts-off after less than 1/2 hour of work. It seems that an overheating problem is common with this model.
To get to the point:

Do you think upgrading to a better heatsink fan will take care of the problem?

The Motherboard seems to be working O.K., BIOS was updated, but the PC shuts down fairly quick.

I wonder if Volcano makes a good heat sink that would be compatible with this Dell model, which I.M.H.O., is a total piece of garbage.

Thanks for any input.

A:Dell Inspiron 1150 / Heatsink problem

does it just shut off or does it lag then turn off like there's something overworking the cpu? if it's a heat problem that's gonna be a tough one, try using some arctic silver 5 on the stock heatsink that stuff is known to drop a few degrees centigrade even on stock heatsinks.

My wife's laptop has stopped working. She tells me that when she switched it on there was a screen which said Windows was closing down because there was a threat to the computer, possibly due to a recent update, or something like that. By the time I reached the computer this message had disappeared leaving a whiteish slightly shimmering screen.
I tried switching off and restarting but after about 15-20 seconds the whirring stopped and the computer did nothing else.
I tried to start in safe mode by tapping F8 with same result
I tried to start in safe mode holding F8 down, same result.
During the time the computer is switched on the lights flash amber a few times then green, this is repeated at regular intervals.
I would be grateful if someone can help for she seems to hold me responsible for losing all her photographs (the main purpos of this computer).
