Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2gen: High CPU usage, fan noise, battery

Q: Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2gen: High CPU usage, fan noise, battery

I received my Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2gen (i7, OLED). Unfortunately the CPU usage is constantly around 30% (reaching up to 100%), the fan is on all the time and the battery is empty in 2 hours. The main reasons for the high CPU usage are the following three programmes:- Sophos web intelligence (which I have to have installed according to my employer)- WMI provider host (I tried deinstalling it, but then I can no longer access the network drives)- Synaptics TouchPad 64-bit EnhancementsAny ideas what I could do to solve the issue? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My Lenovo YOGA 510-14AST (purchased a few weeks ago in August 2018, runs on Win 10) gives out very loud fan noise for 5-10 secs once initiating the smallest task (e.g. opening a pdf. or a new tab in Chrome). This problem happens more often when the laptop is charged. Probably caused by high CPU usage, which during standard browsing, sometimes rockets up to 85%. Strangely, when in task manager I add up the running programmes, it does not give me the indicated 85%, but usually around 40%. I tried various "small fixes" from the forum/internet, like lowering max processor state, getting rid of background apps. and installing all the (I think) Win 10 updates. None of it seems to help. Also, the battery lasts ( standard usage - browsing and win office) shorter than advertised. So, I am wondering if these are common problems of this seria or a hardware/ other problems, and if there are any solutions on how to solve the fan noise.  I am not so much of a tech-savvy, and had a budged for a cheap laptop only, so would be grateful for any help or advice.

Hi, the touch display of my X1 Yoga is not working properly anymore. Strangly, the pen works fine but touch is working very restircted.  What works: Switching between applications, some regular clicks (e.g. in the explorer). What is not working: Scrolling is not working at all. Clicking in internet explorers (e.g. Chrome and Edge). What I did so far: - System update- Lenovo update- Driver updates Thank you for any help. Best regards, Tobias

Finger touch and pen seem related, but they are handled separately.  It could be a hardware problem.  Do you have warranty remaining?

I own a Thinkpad Yoga 14 20DM and currently there is a high pitched noise through the headphone jack.  Whenever I listen to music or watch a movie, this noise comes on and is extremely annoying.  It only happens when I have headphones or speakers plugged into the laptop. I have sent in my laptop three times to the Repair depot.  The first time was for a touchscreen replacement, and the bottom plastic casing was cracking.  When I got it back, it had this annoying headphone jack issue. I have sent in the laptop twice after that and it still has not been fixed.  The system and audio board have been replaced.  I even sent in the headphones with it and they still couldn't figure it out. I do not know what to do now.  I'm pretty frustrated about the experience and probably won't buy a Lenovo product again.   Is there anything else I can do?

Hi,I have a problem from the first day I bought this computer, couple of months ago. When I plugged headphones to the headphones connection, I sound static and really annoying noise from them. Sometimes it stops, but whenever I play sound in the computer it always in the background. After a bit of researching I found that what cause this is the Nvidia drivers that installed, when I disable them, it stops. How can I fix this? I don't want to keep these drivers disabled since I need to use the Nvidia video graphic from time to time.(btw I tried to switch between Realtek drivers to windows generic drivers, It didn't work) Thanks in advance!

Hi.
Welcome to the forums.

Can you please post the full model number of you Thinkpad? Are you using Windows 10?

I have a TP Y 14 (20DM008UUS) with one of those ThinkPad In-Ear Headphones (57Y4488) (and Windows 10 64bits) and I don't apreciate any static sound while hearing music or videos.

How are you disabling the Nvidia drivers, from Windows Device Manager? Disabling the NVidia display adapter worked for you to remove the noise sound?

I always try to keep the Thinkpad Yogas driver up to date. Do you want to give it a try updating the Nvidia and the Realtek drivers?

Let me know your model number and we will check the support page for the latest drivers.

Regards

Hello there. I've bought lenovo yoga 700 for just 4 months and it has fan noise problem recently. It sometimes has fan noise like running a huge apps, althought i just starting up it and open light apps like internet, and office. When it comes, the battery just can hold up to 2-3 hours. But, the other time with the same condition (openning the same apps), the fan noise literally too silent that i have to get my ear to the source to hear the noise. and it comes with the battery life much longer between 7-10 hours. Why it comes like that? Is that any settings that I have to set? or? Thank you.

Hi all,

I've recently been having abnormally high fan noise, coupled with erratic cpu usage even when I have no programs open.

My laptop usually has about 6 hours of battery life when it is fully charged but it seems to keep dropping to about 2-3 hours at the moment, coupled with the fan noise being extremely loud.

At the moment it is 50/50 as to whether it will work fine or not, it has half an hour working perfectly, low fan noise, low CPU temp, then suddenly the fan whirs up and the computer heats up (currently on 71 degrees c).
I've had a look at the air vents and they all seem clear, i've taken the back off my computer and its all pretty tidy so I have absolutely no idea what is causing the problem.

Is it worth doing a reformat to try and clear absolutely everything and check whether it is a hardware or software issue?

Hello All, I have an issue with my YOGA 700 laptop when logged in multiple accounts simultaneously. Whenever an account is left logged on and the user is switched as opposed to logging off, the cpu usage ramps up very high with several RUNDLL32 processes being the culprit. I have checked the RUNDLL32 processes with Process Explorer and the command line are as follows:C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe C:\ProgramData\LenovoTransition\Server\x64\EnableAutoRotation.dll,RunCustomMonitor The directory is as follows: C:\ProgramData\LenovoTransition\Server\x64\ The only solution I have found is restarting the laptop. The problems comes back when again more than one user is logged in. Also, the rundll32 processes only run high cpu on one account at a time and there doesn't seem to be a preference for a specific account, all of them are plagued one at a time with the problem. Disabling the Yoga Mode Control service is a fix but that breaks the mode control which is essential in this laptop. I have tried installing all the available software on the Software page foor the YOGA 700. The rundll32 processes drain the battery very fast and I can't always log off other users when they have apps open!  I have posted a screenshot of process explorer showing 2 rundll32.exe processes using 25% cpu usage each. However, sometimes up to 4 rundll32.exe processes open up and they use combined 100% cpu usage, which makes the laptop run very hot and slow. In t... Read more

Hi, I am having a big issue since I bought X1 Yoga around a month back. The temperature shoots upwards of 80C as soon as I put a little load on my system (including sometimes just Flash based websites). This makes fan run abnormally at a high RPM making too much sound. It is almost unbearable and makes difficult to work silently. It is the i7-6600, 16GB model and given the price, I was expecting a better system response. With this configuration, I am expected to use for heavy wok at times, but this sound deters me. Can Lenovo provide a solution to this problem? Or do I need to get this serviced in just 1 month? Please help and provide solution. Thanks

Also another unrelated problem I have is that 2-finger-tap right click isnt working on the touchpad despite the option in the settings being ticked.

Please help, I've been really dissappointed in this laptop because of these things and I'm sure it's awesome when it works properly

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

Recently this thing has begun setting off a high pitched loud noise.  It has passed Lonovo syestem tests, all drivers are updated.  It does not sound like some of the sound files I have heard on-line.  Mine is more high pitched and loud then those of the fan sound.  Muting the speakers does not always help but this sound appears to becoming from the speakers not like a rattline sound when something is moving inside.  Any ideas of how to determine what it is are appreciated.

I bought my Yoga 700 about a year and a half ago and up until about a month ago it has been working without a hitch. It randomly started making a very high pitched noise that I thought, at first, only occured when I plugged in my headphones because it was extremely loud when I wore them. However, I soon realised it was also coming from the built-in speakers in my laptop but at just a quieter level. It does not happen when I have my volume on mute but any louder than that and it turns on. It is particularly loud when any audio is playing (eg. youtube and spotify). Does anyone have any solutions? I've tried reinstalling my realtek audio drivers, changing my microphone and speaker settings, etc but nothing seems to be working. I would be so greatful if anyone had any suggestions because I'm someone who adores listening to music and watching videos and it makes me very upset when I cant do that. Thank you

Dear all,  I've recently purchased a Thinkpad X1 Yoga 3rd gen 20LES01W00 (i.e., i7, 512GB SSD, 16GB Ram) and though it's a great device there's something that's driving me insane: A constant background eloctrostatic noise. Its a high pitched 'bzzzzzzzzzzzz' and apparently it is emitted from the left part below the keyboard (below the 'caps' key) - when moving my ear close to this location I can hear a permanently 'wipp wipp wipp' sound in addition to the constant 'bzzzzzzzzz' eloctrostatic hum. These noises occur as soon as I start the laptop with any application (or without any, mind you) and is also existent when I use the laptop in any other mode, e.g., tablet mode. I have installed the newest BIOS with Lenovo Vantage. So far, neither restarting the notebook nor setting back Win10 Pro 64bit (the 'light and easy' setback) does help.  What should I do? And what is that noise? Cheers-Felix

My laptop seems high notes. When the laptop is plugged in it is all good. If the laptop is running on battery it seems different high-pitched sounds. It is very disturbing because I work in silence. I checked if it is not a problem with the screen, but it's hard for me to judge. When the screen is turned off, and connected another monitor that everything is okay. It is independent of the operating mode and brightness. Squealed as I work without a cable. Maybe it's the fault of the power supply? In my opinion, the hardware is faulty, but if the complaint is accepted and the error is corrected? Laptop has three days ... Sorry for my english... PS: This is not hdd for 100% I konw how it sound...

I found a video on youtube, where it's doing the same thing I've having problem with. It seems like an error in the motherboard. Ever since I uninstalled all the Thinkvantage software from my Z60m Thinkpad laptop, if my laptop's CPU usage is high, it automatically shuts down. This is super annoying!! I was prompted to uninstall all of my Thinkpad's Thinkvantage software via the thread I posted on the Thinkpad support forum:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=87392

My username there is " thinkson2", of course. As you can see, I haven't received any response from them yet so I decided to see what was going on by posing my problem to the experts here.

One thing I was thinking of doing was upgrading my RAM for my Thinkpad. Good idea, bad idea? I'm ordering some things from Amazon and I also have to extend my thinkpad's warranty for the final year that the warranty can be extended anyway, so upgrading the RAM might be ok, i guess..?? I'm just guessing that it would speed up my computer... And when and if my thinkpad dies, I can simply transfer the RAM into my next computer or laptop, right? (or would the ram be useless then??) Thanks!

Hi there, Duduamar ?

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

Do an idle test
Click start type msconfig -> start up -> disable all reboot
You will have disabled all programs that start up with your pc open task manager and see if the cpu speed has dropped

If it has open msconfig again and turn on your firewall and av then reboot check turn on a few more check etc etc
Be warned that after the first disable all and reboot you will have disabled your firewall and av so don?t download or goto unknown web pages but it should be ok for a 2 min test

Update us how it goes.

The battery status toggles between not charging, not used, and unauthorized battery after it was calibrated using one key. Before that, the battery was working perfectly, lasting close to 5 hours. Now the laptop shuts off when unplugged and the battery status is constantly changing. I've had this laptop for approximately a year now and it was unused and left in an unopened box for the first 8 months.

This results in high CPU temperatures and surface temperatuers and the fan becoming very noisy, despite no programmes being open in windows. I could not find a solution. I have a suspicion that due to charging, laptop creates heat in some components (VRM etc), this is magnified by Rapid Charging, therefore the fans must run during charging to dissipate heat.I suspect the fans' running voltage is linked to the CPU load, so the only way for the fans to run faster to dissipate charging heat is by running the CPU at higher voltage/frequency, which in turn creates even more heat. Perhaps a simple fix would be to give an option to turn off Rapid Charging, as to reduce heat, in Lenovo Vantage. The CPU management is terrible on this laptop. I don't know if it is Intel's DPTF drivers or Lenovo's firmware, but the battery would die very quickly. I disabled Turbo Boost on battery mode and the battery life almost doubled.  I am quite dissapointed with many aspects of this laptop. There has been no update in a long time and I think there are quite a few things to fix.  Don't just fix this in the Yoga 930. You need to look after your current customers as well. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS AND WORK ON A FIX. This laptop is so close to perfect... Thank you.
