[SOLVED] scaling problem after wake from suspend

Q: [SOLVED] scaling problem after wake from suspend

Asus Zenbook ux301LA, i5 Haswell, Intel graphics 4000 Win 8.1 x64. It came with Win 8, I updated to 8.1

After wake from suspend scaling is way off, everything is tiny... I figured it might be the video driver so I went to Intel and used their detect utility and I downloaded the exe, ran it and it said not compatible, go to the PC mfg. Asus does not list any graphics drivers for 8.1, only 8. So I can't use suspend, must do a full shutdown and restart. How can this be fixed? Can it be fixed?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 with WinXPPro SP3, 2GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo E4600, and it is unreliable for Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring. I also wonder whether my Standby - Sleep - Suspend (S1 or S3) is working correctly.

When the PC is in Standby - Sleep - Suspend mode (S1 or S3), Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring work some of the time but not all of the time, and I'd like them to be 100% reliable.

These may be two different problems, but your advice will be appreciated. (Also, if I should post in a different forum, please advise.)

My Network Card is an Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection, and I recently upgraded its drivers using "generic" PROXP.exe from the Intel website, although this has not helped the problem. The specific driver file e1e5132.sys is now from 2009 -- it used to be from 2007. But, as I say, Wake on LAN from Standby was not and is still not reliable, both before and after the driver update.

In Settings .. Network Connections ... Local Area Connections ... Properties ... Configure ... Power Management, all the Wake on LAN options are checked ON:

- Wake on Directed Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet from Power Off State
- Wake on Link

The NIC card's Diagnostic checks are all OK.

A:Trouble with Wake on Ring, Wake on LAN and Standby - Sleep - Suspend

More to above: Dell has suggested I must re-install Windows. I've never done that, and I realize I'd probably lose all my applications and data - no good. Seems to me that's like using an atomic bomb to kill a mosquito. And why should I assume that will work?

But is there a way to re-install -- or maybe fix -- Windows that leaves everything else safe?

FYI - About a month or so ago, I ran SFC (System File Checker) in repair mode, and that didn't help with this problem.

Any ideas?

Asus Zenbook ux301LA, i5 Haswell, Intel graphics HD4400, Win 8.1 x64, 2560x1440 display. It came with Win 8, I updated to 8.1

After wake from sleep the scaling is way off, everything is tiny... So I can't use sleep, must do a full shutdown and restart to get back to normal resolution.

Asus does not list any graphics drivers for 8.1, only 8. So I got a generic Intel HD graphics driver update from Intel but it didn't fix the issue.

The other strange thing is that it is time dependent. IOW if I wake it soon after I put it to sleep it restores to the correct resolution state. But if I wait longer it doesn't. I put it to sleep and woke it up multiple times and it seems like the change happens after it has been sleeping for about an hour... although I can't say for sure it is always exactly on that schedule. What could be changing in the system while asleep that would do this???

In a way this isn't a big deal since this thing boots up from full shutdown almost as fast as from sleep. But I had intended to use sleep without a password so I don't have to constantly enter that while home, but keep the password on full start up.

I have the Dell XPS 13 9360 and have been using the Dell USB type-C adapter to connect to wired Ethernet network. I have a problem when waking up the laptop from suspend. VGA and USB on the adapter continue to work well after wake from suspend but the Wired Network functionality of the adapter is not recognized.
Note that if I unplug and replug the adapter it is recognised correctly.
The adapter is using the driver r8152 for wired networking, I am using Linux Mint 18.1 (Ubuntu 16.04 based) and kernel

I have an LCD monitor with native resolution 1280x1024, and it's connected via a regular analog cable. I usually played only one game, Counter Strike 1.6. I used to play is at 1024x768. A few months back, (I don't remember what I was doing, I faintly remember (maybe)it was a CPU overheating issue) I had my computer case opened up. So, the computer rebooted a few times, and I remember, that the text (about my Nvidia gpu) that is displayed at the started of each bootup, appeared a bit stretchy(just like you take an 800x600 pic, resize it to 1280x1024). Same with the splash screen. But the Windows GUI (which was set at my native resolution) appeared normal. Then I started CS1.6, and even it appeared stretchy. Not knowing the cause of this, I switched the resolution of the game to 1280x1024. Since CS1.6 is not graphic intensive, I had no problem running the game at that resolution. So I ignored the problem.

Yesterday I bought L4D. Again, it had the same stretchiness at lower resolutions. But, I cannot manage good FPS at higher resolutions, so I have to play play at 800x600, with the stretchy graphics that look like crap.

I get the same problem even in Windows 7.

I have NO idea what caused this. Any solution to this? If my monitor was connected via DVI, then solving this would be easy, but it doesn't have a DVI port.

Hi guys,

Yesterday I installed Windows 10 on my machine, and am having just one problem so far. I have 1 monitor and 1 HDTV connected to my setup. The monitor connects via DVI, while the TV is connected via HDMI. The problem occurred when I turned on the PC this morning(yesterday I installed Win10), and the scaling options were changed. Everything was humongous on the PC monitor. I eventually got rid of it by plugging the HDMI cable out of the PC and restarting it.

My understanding is, when Windows is booting it detects the HDTV first, and the PC monitor second; and of course scales everything to better fit the HDTV. My question is, can this be disabled? In Windows 7, I did not experience this issue.

Very similar issue here.

Thanks guys, the sevenforums helped me a lot before, hoping you can help me now again.

A:Problem with scaling with HDTV

Probably the TV is the primary monitor and it is given priority. You have to make the other monitor primary. Click on the search icon and type monitor. Then click on Choose a monitor to be the main display. I cannot help more, as I have a single monitor, but once there it should be obvious how to change the monitors by moving them around or by click at the advanced settings.

I got this little problem i can seem to fix. I use a 32" LCD television as a monitor, via RGB (vga) and i'm getting a really weird problem in windows vista.

This screen has very few supported resolutions modes and among them all, the one that works/looks best using the RGB cable is 1600:900. Alright, after i installed all the drivers for my computer, that resolution showed fine. BUT my television, instead of the usual 1600x900 mode, went right to 1600x1200 mode. That makes the image really blurry, not pratical at all. So i thoght maybe the desktop resolution didn't really change to 1600x900, and i took a screenshot to check the file size. it was indeed 1600x900.

Long story short: desktop is really at 1600x900, but my TV seems to think its 1600x1200 so it switches to this mode instead, making everything blurry. Only happens on windows seven, works fine on windows xp.

I tested it with other 16:9 screen resolutions and they all got the same problem: they set my television to the 4:3 or 5:4 mode counterpart (for example, 1280x720 sets it to 1280x1024)

As for my video card, it's a nvidia geforce 8800GT.

I have absolutely NO idea how am i going to fix this, since this did not happend on windows XP. I sure hope i don't have to roll back to xp just because of this.

Can anyone lend a helping hand?

ps: unfortunately the suport for PCs via hdmi on this television sucks and the only port is being used by my xbox360, so i can't use dvi/hdmi instead of RGB.

A:Problem with LCD television scaling

alright, i figured the cause of the problem.

seems newer nvidia drivers for windows seven have some issues with scaling. so i dropped back to forceware 182,50 and 16:9 worked (mostly).

thing is now i can't set the screen to 1600x900 anymore, and when i try to add it as a custom resolution using nvidia control panel, it fails the test.
also when i check "show resolutions not suported by this screen", 1600x900 shows up but windows fails to switch to it. that's basically the same problem i had initially with windows XP (which i fixed by installing the "Compaq p1610 color monitor" driver instead of generic pnp device).

didn't work out so well on windows 7, still can't do 1600x900 or 1920x1080

at least i got some 16:9 resolutions to work, and they're not nearly as blurry as anything i was getting before.

I am running Windows Vista. I connect to the internet via a cable modem supplied by my ISP which is wired directly to my single computer (a Vista desktop). This connection uses an Ethernet cable connected to the network adapter in the motherboard.

The problem that I'm having is that every time the computer wakes from sleep the internet is basically broken. It will not connect to the internet, and my status is "local only". I right click on my internet button in the notification area, and click "diagnose and repair", and it comes up with this:

"Cannot Communicate with Primary DNS Server (xxx.xx.x.xxx)"

It gives me the option to reset the network adapter. Which fixes the problem every time. I just can't understand why I have to reset my adapter every time I wake from sleep mode.

The option on the network adapter to turn on/off the energy saving mode doesn't help. Neither it does the option to turn off IPv6 on the connection properties. I have Vista Home Basic with all the updates installed to this day.

I would greatly appreciate your help! :)

I'm just learning Crystal Reports at work and have adopted some reports from another site. We're starting to use Crystal in conjunction with our site's "company-specific" database (i.e. it's programmed from the ground up using SQL and such, and is not out-of-the-box).

One of the Crystal reports shows staff working in different areas or departments.
It has a bar chart at the top of the page and details below.

In testing, I got 4 people to clock in to their departments, but the scale on the y-axis is showing incorrectly and I can't find where to fix the interval.
1 member of staff was in department A, 2 were in department B and 1 was in department C.
However, the numbers on the y-axis looked like this:

The bars for staff in departments A and C reached about halfway between the two "1"s, but the bar for staff in department B met the line of the upper "2".
I changed the scale to show 1 decimal place and found that the numbers on the y-axis then looked like this:

So it's no wonder that the bars of departments A and C were between the 0.8 and 1.2 gridlines.

So, how do I change the interval from 0.4 to 1? This is a count of staff and there will never be 0.4 of a person!

Hi all,

My native resolution is 1440x900 on a 19" widescreen through my nVidia 6600GT; Since the time I built this rig I have only been able to get games to play in a 1400x900 or 1280x800 resolution for the widescreen, but they did play perfectly (I have yet to find a game that accepts a 1440x900 resolution).

However, recently the 1400x900 resolution scaling does not match the screen aspect ratio...the screen extends about an inch off the right side and scrolls with the mouse. The only culprit I can think of is the latest forceware drivers nVidia released, possibly resetting any custom modes I had running. While the 1280x800 still works properly, I dearly miss the greater resolution and have pounded my brain and keyboard trying everything I could think of to get it back but to no avail. If you folks could shed some light on the situation I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

(wow, wall of text )

A:Solved: 1400x900 resolution not scaling

I believe I have fixed this issue, finally.

First, I reverted the nVidia CP to the old version which I was more comfortable with and which seemed to have more options; I then selected and set the 1400x900 resolution and, after confirming, selected the "Advanced Timing" option. In the Advanced Timing menu I noticed that the "Mode & Timing" and the "Timing Standard" selections were set to cutom values, which was weird since this was a fresh installation. So, I selected "Timing Standard" and set it to "Discrete Monitor Timing"; This along with setting the "Flat Panel Scaling" to Monitor Scaling appears to have fixed this issue.

If I tell the computer to power off it will, but within a second or two it will automatically start up again. The only way to turn off is to disconnect the power plug. Additionally sleep mode (S3) no longer functions. The symptoms are similar, but after powering right back up, I get no picture on screen and the system fans will run at full speed.

A:Solved: Scaleo E HTPC won't power off, won't suspend

Ok... I have cleared the TV-tuner. Taking it out did not solve the problem.

Something else has changed. The terabyte HDD was an upgrade, but I don't think the HDD could be causing this...

Please don't let it be the motherboard or PSU.

I perform a clean install of Vista Ultimate without no problems, except for this:

After suspend my laptop (default option), always boot to Windows Error Recovery screen and say that windows didn't shut down successfully. I choose Normal Startup and everything it's normal.

I update my nvidia drivers to 160.03 (from www.laptopvideo2go.com) and didn't fix it.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Hi again! It's time for another cosmetic XP tweaking question.

In the out-of-the-box install, Windows XP on my notebook PC had this nifty feature I loved -- closing the lid to suspend operation, then opening it back up and hitting the power button to resume. It played this two-note piano melody when I did so, and then a more upbeat tune when I clicked on my avatar icon to get back to my desktop.

I've since reinstalled XP several times. Right now it does the exact same thing that it used to, but without the cheerful piano sounds. How can I get them to come back? Kind of a silly question, I know, but they really did brighten my day.

For reference:
Yes, the sound is turned up.
Yes, I have double-clicked on the speaker icon in the system tray and made sure sound is turned up on everything.
Yes, I have gone to "Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices" -> "Change the Sound Theme" on the Control Panel, and gotten the dialogue box where it lets you assign sounds to system events. I scrolled through the list, but I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for.

That last thing is as close as I've come to solving the "problem" on my own. Any suggestions?

Owner of a newly acquired Satellite Z930-15X, I have some questions/problems :

1) Suspend to RAM and hibernation work well when there is no external USB hard disk plugged in. If there is one plugged in, the laptop immediately returns back from suspend state. Is there a solution for this?

2) Is there a way to selectively deactivate Bluetooth? Currently only activate/deactivate Plane mode is offered (with Fn-F8 or from Windows 8 charm bar). This activates/deactivates both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth I believe.

3) The laptop is wobbly on reception. I have to put some thin paper at one bottom corner (the bottom top left) in order that it can be stabilized. Apparently the problem is also mentioned in another thread. Is there a suggestion to fhix this problem?

Thank you.

A:Satellite Z930 - Suspend problem with USB hard disk plugged in

1/ Which HDD is connected to your notebook? When I use 2,5? external HDD with my Satellite U940 I don?t have such problem.

2/ I?ve tested it on my machine and have noticed the same. When WLAN is off BT software is off too. I didn?t find a way how to separately have control over WLAN device and BT.

3/ I think this problem must be clarified with Toshiba service. They should check it and maybe exchange rubbers at the bottom.

IDT audio comes from Dell Support - Drivers & Downloads

The other 3 BSODs appear tied to USB. Remove USB hub, see if system BSODs. Hub may be drawing too much power.

Is Sophos anti-virus only or does it have personal firewall?

I had this problem for the last two weeks. My monitor will blank out (Black Screen), my DVD drive LED will flash a couple of time and the hard drive will spin down. This can happen while I?m booting the system, running any program or just moving from one program to another. The computer seems to be in the suspend mode because the Num Lock LED will change when the num lock key is pressed. The Cap Lock key doesn?t change the Caps Lock LED. I have to hold in the power button for 15 seconds to turn off the computer. I have run all of the antivirus software: C cleaner, Spybot, and Norton 360.

I have searched this forum for days now looking for my problem, with little luck. I have the latest updates from Microsoft. I have changed out the power supply, updated my video drivers and system BIOS. I need to get back to work as software developer. Here are my computer details:

I increased the Desktop font from 96 to 120 and then made the mistake of going to 144. At 144 things are far more readable but a lot is going off screen. Everytime I go to change the font back to 120 or 96 it says the change will take effect after re-starting the computer. It does not, infact if one goes back before restarting the computer the font size has already reverted to 144. At one time I thought I saw an "apply" button but there is none now. Hi, I bought a Canon iP4900 printer recently, mainly to print labels on inkjet printable CDrs. After an initial issue with using Nero Cover Designer, which resulted in the printer thinking that an 80mm mini CDr was in fact a 120mm standard CDr (it appeared to ignore the size given) which ended up with it printing over the CD tray, I settled down to use the limited software, Canon Easy Photo Print EX instead.

To print my 80mm mini CDrs I created some text in Indesign at the correct size, saved them as image files and imported them into Easy Photo Print EX. This worked fine and when I printed out the CDs the text appeared at the correct size.

Then I loaded the same image files into the larger 120mm standard CD template, so I could create some CDs for friends who could not use the mini CD format. When I printed these CDs out, the image had been automatically scaled to fit the larger CD, without any option to remove this. The image size control in Easy Photo Print EX only controls the crop around the image, not the scale or size of the image involved. It appears to scale the images, ignoring the original size. If I print the images of the text out on paper, they appear the same size as on the 80mm mini CDs.

I'm very confused by this. The software is not very good, but no other software I've used, Nero included, seems to work with this printer. I cannot understand why it is upscaling an image automatically when placed on the larger CD template.

At the moment it means... Read more

I recently was given a Dell laptop by my brother. It was (key word) working fine for him. He installed an additional memory chip, started the laptop to check it out. Shut it down, put it in the box and shipped it to me. When I try to boot up, it says that it failed and the "suspend to disk" screen comes up. I can't get it to boot in any mode (safe, normal, last previous working, etc) Anyone have this problem before, and how do I correct it??!!!

I am new here. Hoping someone can help me out with this issue. I work in IT so am not a complete computer bonehead and am at my wits end with this.

My laptop is about 4 years old, it's a toshiba. For whatever reason, it started taking 5+ minutes to wake up from sleeping. If it sleeps for an hour, it's OK.. but if you leave it sleep all night and try to wake it up in the morning, it's quite cranky. After the 5+ minute wake up, it performs as normal. It was running Windows 7 Home 32 bit.

Troubleshooting steps that I have taken are as follows.

Reinstalled windows. Issue was resolved! but after about 2-3 weeks, issue came back. I thought maybe it was some type of windows update, so I reinstalled windows again and paid closer attention to the updates. Issue presented itself again after 2-3 weeks, and there were no updates immediately done prior to it starting.

I started to think maybe it was something related to my hard drive, so i performed laptop surgery and swapped out my original hard drive with a solid slate drive, and installed windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (this laptop can support 64 bit so I figured why not upgrade.).

issue again was resolved for a few weeks, and now it's back to taking 5+ minutes to wake up again.

If you're turning the laptop on from scratch, it takes 10-15 seconds tops. if you're restarting, it's 10-15 seconds tops (man, I love SSD...)... if you're waking itup within the hour, its 1-2 seconds. But anything longer then that, 5+ minutes.

It's not clear to me what 'Wake by Thunderbolt' (hereafter WbT) does and whether or not it's required for 'Wake On LAN' (hereafter WOL).  In the T470s and T480s user guides, there's no mention that WbT is required for WOL so I'm thinking it's not.  But then again, since Ethernet is in the dock itself, and seeing how there are controls for PXE, I could see how it might be required. ReferencesT470s User GuideT480s User Guide

Nothing happens. This is on my other computer, which parameters are:
Motherboard - P5Q-EM in Asus Barebone series T
CPU - Pentium Dual Core E6300
Graphics - onboard
LAN - onboard
OS - Windows 7 & XP
It's weird, because on 7 computer sleeps fully, but on XP partially. I mean that the system is slept, but the CPU fan for example is still running. It wakes from this state. On 7 the fan stops, but it doesn't wake. I tried that also with hibernate. Also, on the other motherboard it works, which is almost the same like that in barebone. The LAN card has the permission to wake the computer with "magic" packet.
Is it BIOS problem or software?

P.S. waking from mouse/keyboard doesn't work too.

A:Wake on Lan problem

sounds to me like you're going into S1 state on the other computer, and S3 state on the Windows 7 machine. S5 would be "fully cut off".

The culprit could be in your BIOS, make sure wake-on-lan or WOL from S3 is at least set to on (also could be under PME). the second thing is to check actually in your network card's driver, which probably also has a setting, by going into Control Panel->Device Manager->Network Adapters-> right click on yours, then go to Properties. You should have a "Power" tab under that, which you can also set these settings. Make sure "Allow this device to bring the computer out of sleep" or "Wake from Magic Packet" is checked/enabled. This may also be under the "Advanced" tab or something similar.. just poke around.

Ultimately, though, you need to have it enabled in both your BIOS and your OS/driver. There is also a neat/tiny program I have that will do it and allow you to listen on your network for magic packets/wake requests... that I know works to bring my Windows 7 machine out of S3 mode. As soon as I can find a link for the site I'll post it [edit: WOL for Windows, use WOL Monitor/Sniffer to test if it's working]. Here is the link: http://www.depicus.com/wake-on-lan/wake-on-lan-gui.aspx

I can confirm this program works to bring Windows 7 machines out of S3 mode, if properly configured.

Hi everyone,

I enabled WOL(Wake on LAN) and everything worked, but then I realized that WOL only works with sleep(S1 & S3) and hibernate, but not shut down.
This problem is quite bad, as on vacation, I need to take my laptop to Italy, and I need WOL to to turn on this computer, so I could use RDC(Remote Desktop Connection) . And, if I accidentally shutdown this computer, I will not be able to use RDC to connect to this computer!
Any suggestions?

We are getting ready to move all of our corporate PCs to a certain power profile which will now require users to have a standby time on their computers.

The problem is, every user has to be set up for Wake On LAN so they can work from home hours after their PC has went to sleep.

The first few tests went seamlessly - put it in standby, RDP and it wakes up - no problem.

However, we have now ran in to 3 (out of only 6 or so) computers that the RDP user gets the "Remote logoff in progress" screen on, then RDP closes - when you go back to the host computer (the computer being remoted in to), the power light is on (blinking on this model is how you know its in standby) as though it is awake, but the screen is black and will not "wake up."

Has anyone ever seen such a problem?

Router is port fowarded to port 9. All the required info is set up on my tablet, but I cannot get the pc to power, or even wake from sleep. using same IP and everything as I do when I use VNC on the tablet, with the exception of the different port. you can not wake it through internet. WOL will send a packet through your lan when both device using the same network router.
you can make some schedule to make your home pc wake up and then using remote desktop tools to control it via internet.
