Is it possible to write a .BAT file that generates NO screen output?

Q: Is it possible to write a .BAT file that generates NO screen output?

I have a data logging program that runs 24/7 and which displays a continuous record of the data on the CRT. It is really an MSDOS program, but it runs fine on Win98. When it is running, it takes over the entire display. The problem is that it will not tolerate ANY sort of screen output from another program. It immediately locks up, although it doesn't take Windows down with it.

I would like to use the task scheduler to run a little .bat script that uploads a day's worth of data to web page. I can redirect the output generated by various commands in the .bat to the NUL device, and prevent the script from generating any output, but Windows insists on opening a MSDOS window when the .bat runs, even though nothing gets displayed in it. Just opening the window is enough to derail the data collection program. I had hoped that I could do something like "upload.bat > NUL" but it doesn't work.

I could always write the script to run from another machine to control the process remotely, but I'm not thrilled with the idea of keeping a separate machine on line just to run a 10 second task once a day.

Anybody know a way around this?

Preferred Solution: Is it possible to write a .BAT file that generates NO screen output?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If you were running this on Windows 2000 or XP I would suggest using this.
http://www.joeware.net/freetools/tools/quiet/index.htm

There is a way to do this with a vbscript as well. Basically runs a command shell invisibly in the background without seeing it. I will have to digg up that link.

Hi all,

I am working on creatign a standalone CA and a subordinate - both servers are Windows Core. I have *.req file generated from the subordinate, copied over to the standalone CA and now and wanted to get the certificate for subordinate.

When running:

certreq -Submit file.req
I only get the *.rsp file.
However - when running:
certreq -Submit file.req file.cer file.p7b file.ful
I got the *.rsp AND the *.ful file only, not *.cer, no *.pb7 - nuffin.
Question is - what am I doing wrong here?

I have a script (Kindly originated by Golden in this thread http://www.sevenforums.com/backup-restore/317082-using-task-scheduler-fails-run-robocopy. )

Script robocopy I:\DATA M:\Backup_DATA /e /np /log:backup_log.txt which is run at shutdown.

In my M:\ drive I have two identically named folders: 'Backup_DATA', one (call it A) containing the correct 70 folders and 1003 files 295mb. Dated 11 January 2014 11:19:41 in properties, right click.
The second copy (Call it B) contains 2 folders 0 files 0 Bytes and is dated the same 11 January 2014 11:19:41 in properties, right click.

Although they are both shown on my M:\ drive as: (A) Backup_DATA dated 10/1/2014 at 16.46 and (B) Backup_DATA dated 9/1/2014 18.36.

I am not able to delete the ghost copy (B) as when I try I receive the following popup:
"Could not find this item. This is no longer located in M:\ verify its location and try again"

Not sure where to go from here, any suggestions? !!

Regards
Alan.
Update:

I am unable to delete or rename the folder 'Backup_DATA', however inside the folder is another folder named 'e' and that contains another folder named 'np'. The 'np' folder is empty.
Now it seems quite a coincidence that both 'e' and 'np' make up part of the Robocopy script .

I am still unable to delete these sub folders as each one no longer exists on my M: drive.

A:Robocopy and Group Policy generates 1 real & 1 Ghost file.

Well, folder removed

Tried to do this in dos same problem, although it was shown it did not exist! Searched around and came across Unlocker. Using Unlocker I still could not delete the Backup_DATA folder itself, it remained even after the suggested re-boot. I had to delete the 'np' folder first, then the 'e' folder, and then the 'Backup_DATA' folder.

It seems Unlocker succeeded where anything else I tried failed.

Hello, I am wondering how to have logman output to a specific file. The current behavior I'm seeing is that although its possible to specify a file with the '-o' option, when you start collecting the results, the filename will be appended with an integer
that increments per start/stop.
Example:
"logman.exe create counter Test -cf C:\Temp\counters.log -ow -o C:\Temp\logman.blg"
When you start/stop collecting the counters, the output files will be:
C:\Temp\logman_000001.blg
C:\Temp\logman_000002.blg
etc
I have tried with the append (-a) and overwrite (-ow) args to no avail.
Any ideas?

I have a temp file ( ~DF2784.tmp 48KB) which appears in local settings. If I try to delete it I get the message: Cannot delete ~DF2784.tmp: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again. I cannot find any program that is running it. It seems to refresh itself on boot up.

Can anyone tell me if this is generated by Windows XP? It seems to have appeared after upgrading to SP2 and loading IE7. The only other change on my system is installing Carbonite backup.

System: Windows XP SP2
F-Secure Anti Virus 2006

The only other utilities on my compter are:
UniBlue Speed up My PC
Registry Mechanic.

My systems seems to be working fine except IE7 bombs out quite a lot - "IE has to close down..." but runs perfectly on IE6.

I am not paranoid about temporary files but feel more secure if I know what is creating them and why they appear.

A:Solved: Solved: can anyone tell what generates this temp file?

Yes, I get a Temp file about the same size, the exact number/name will vary depending on many different factors.

Assuming its in Temp Files under local settings, its expected and normal (that is what the location is for)

On my 64bit Win 7 system I have two partitions:

C: (with the "core" Win7 system)
D: (with almost all other stuff)

When I start the following command:

chkdsk D: /F /V /R /X >C:\chkdskout.log

everything works fine.

However when I enter the opposite command

chkdsk C: /F /V /R /X >D:\chkdskout.log

then at first the system is shutdown+restarted+chkdsk performed
BUT the logfile is NOT written.

I guess it is because the partially booted Win7 system at chkdsk time has no access to the partition D:

Is there a workaround for this?

The chkdsk output can be viewed at the screen. I want to have it in logfile as well.

Hello, My Thinkpad Yoga is connected to a large display through ThenkPad docking station.  Its lid is closed.   During my work, from time to time I see random touch clicks on my screen, and random opening of menus.  It is clear that the touch screen is active although the lid is closed.  When I open the lid, and still connected just to the 2nd display (large screen) display the phenomena stops.  Worth noting is that although only the 2nd display shows an image, the laptop touch screen is still sensetive to touch.  This is I guess why the random touches show up on the screen -- it feels the keyboard not fingers. I expect the touch screen to be disabled while the lid is closed or when projecting only to the 2nd screen.  The solution of opening the lid while connected to the docking station is not acceptable.  Lenovo's local support suggestion to disable touch for the Yoga is also not acceptable -- people purchase Yoga to get Touch.   A solution please! Yaron

I wrote this batch file which does what I want it to do so far.

Code:

"C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\HideTaskbar\HideTaskbar.exe"
"C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLANold\VLC\vlc.exe"
"C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\HideTaskbar\ShowTaskbar.exe"

VLC is a video program so I want to associate video files to this bat file. This would mean that when i clicked on a video file in Windows Explorer, the bat file would execute and VLC would open the file I double clicked. At the moment the only thing that happens in this setup is that the bat file executes like normal but no video is played.

Is this possible, and if so how can I accomplish it?

My kid has been using this laptop and loved it, but mentioned a while ago it was difficult to power it back on after turnned it off. However she managed to work around by putting it in hibernate/sleeping mode only, or recycling the system many times (by holding on power button to force it off). The issue was black screen (no Lenovo logo) but computer was on. I didn't pay much attention because she can still make it work, and I was too busy. Last week, there was a windows update (again) and the computer was forced recycle. It never comes back alive again. The same, computer is humming, but no any visual output on screen, just black. Tried novo button, bootable USB, external monitor, all no use. Check the warranty, just over by 2 months! Asked the service store, to fix will cost at least $200-$300 to replace the motherboard! It does not make sense when spent a bit more could buy a new notebook. But my kid liked it and it does not make sense to throw it away either, when it still looks pretty new and only being used very lightly (schoolwork only). It is sad, especially the brand has been gainning my trust. I probably don't expect a "good" solution either from Lenovo or community, but just throw my frustration here (only because have just registered the account and there is no support email or web form). If Lenovo want to make customer happy, the part shouldn't be so expensive for a short-lived laptop! Just by the way, there are many posts about Ideapad's black screen i... Read more

Sorry to hear of all the problems.  Here are a couple of things to try........

First, try a reset of the BIOS.  The procedure can be useful in resolving some hardware conflicts which your computer may have.  Just do this......

1. Unplug the charger / adapter. 2. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds. 3. Plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.

If you are comfortable working inside your laptop. try this........

Try the reset again with the battery removed.

If the reset didn't resolve the problem then you may have a failed piece of hardware preventing the bootup. Remove the battery, hard drive, optical drive, memory, wireless card and bluetooth if it is installed. Now try to power up the stripped laptop. With all the hardware removed you should have lights come on and it may possibly beep since there is no memory installed. If the laptop is showing signs of life start adding hardware one piece at a time starting with a memory module and boot up the laptop. If it doesn't power up try the memory in the other slot. Also try the other memory module separately in both slots if two are available. If it is still showing signs of life add another piece and boot. Do this for each item until it doesn't power up again. The last piece of hardware installed is your problem part.

Hi! I am using an Emachine tower desktop running Windows XP Home. I can normally copy a file from disk to CD using Windows Explorer, then write it on the CD. I am trying to create a CD backup copy of a pdf file I obtained by downloading from the internet. I can drag it from disk to the E drive (CDR/W drive), then use "write these files to CD" under the FILE tab to start the write process. It seems to run OK until near the end, then give me a message that it can't do the write for some reason. The CD is then unusable (shows 100% full in My Computer-Properties). The pdf file is 222 mb, the CD says it can hold 700 mb. I have copied the pdf file from the disk in my PC to the disk in another PC on the network with no problem. When I try to write it to CD on the other PC it gives me the same error message there. Is there some way that the originator of the pdf file could have copy-protected it that would allow copying from disk to disk, but not disk to CD??? Thanks for any help! Nick

Hello. I am using a POWER USER account, Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 /w all the latest patches availible via microsoft update. I was trying to create a .zip file of a folder within the primary directroy of a backup hard drive I use.

For Example:
D:\stuff - I wanted to make a zipfile of the folder "stuff."

Then I get the following error "Cannot Create Output File."

However, if I move the folder to the destop or a subdirectory i.e. stuff/more stuff, then the .zip file is created with no problems.

Also, because user accounts [at least in my experience] have a tendency to decay, I created a freash power user account and the same problem persist.

Is this a standard security feature for power user accounts? Is there anyway I can "disable" it if it is?

Thank You.

I have the following code to write down the number of rows with data in a worksheet

Code:

Function Count Rows ()
Dim WB As Workbook, WS As Worksheet, i As Integer, r As Range
Dim fn As String, s As String

fn = "C:\Notes\" & "\test.txt"

For Each WB In Workbooks
If LCase(GetBaseName(WB.FullName)) = "personal" Then GoTo NextWB
For Each WS In WB.Worksheets
s = s & GetBaseName(WB.FullName) & "!" & WS.Name & " = " & (WS.Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row - 2) & vbCrLf
Next WS
NextWB:
Next WB

If Dir(fn) <> "" Then Kill fn
AppendToTXTFile fn, s
End Sub

The problem is I want to re-use this function in several procedures, and it is only recording the data for the 1st procedure it is called in. How could I iterate through each WB that is opened to have it record all of my data?

Or even set up a loop and write a separate text file for each workbook that is opened and refreshed...that would work as well

A:VBA Write to Text File

Code:

Function CountRows()
Dim WB As Workbook, WS As Worksheet, i As Integer, r As Range

For Each WB In Workbooks
If LCase(GetBaseName(WB.FullName)) = "personal" Then GoTo NextWB

s = s & GetBaseName(WB.FullName) & "!" & WS.Name & " = " & (WS.Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row - 2) & vbCrLf
Next WS
[COLOR="Navy"] If Dir(fPath & "\" & fn) Then Kill fPath & "\" & fn
appendtotxtfile fPath & "\" & fn, s[/COLOR]
NextWB:
Next WB

[COLOR="Red"]'If Dir(fn) <> "" Then Kill fn
'appendtotxtfile fn, s[/COLOR]
End Function

If you want to do it for each sheet you need the code to be in that part of the code

hi guys
i think all of you know my example : i have a game that was written into 2 DVDs and when i want to install this game and insert DVD1 and begin the installation , after for example 10 min it says you should insert DVD 2 for resuming the installation.
i have an 8gig install file of a game(with iso format) so how can i write this into 2 DVDs that will install like my above example

A:write a file into 2 DVDs

No DVD Required installation: Well the easiest way is to extract both ISO's to separate folders.

Example: DVD 1 extract to a folder named dvd1, and DVD2 extract to a folder named dvd 2.

Once both are extracted, run setup.exe (or similar file that starts the installation) in the DVD 1 folder.

When asked to insert DVD2 to complete installation, it should let you "browse" to the folder or cd.

With browse find DVD2 folder, and continue the installation.

When I try to install my new Kensington USB Display Adapter(sort of a video board) on my recent (2 weeks old) Lenovo "ideaCentre B3" computer I get this error msg.

"Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file location exists and is writable."

Windows7 home Premium, 64 bit

Kensington said download new "Setup.exe" file when that gave same error, they said not our problem go away.
also tried run as admin - same problem!

Lenovo said software is not under warranty it will cost a lot of money to troubleshoot - call microsoft.

Microsoft said this is an OEM product call Lenovo.

any HELP would be appreciated

A:How do I get permission to write to log file

Are you sure the driver included with the setup software for the Kengsington device is a 64-bit driver?

Re your post: Microsoft is correct in telling you that the OEM, in your case Lenovo, is responsible for operating system problems. However, if the problem is with the device installation software, neither Microsoft nor Lenovo are responsible, that's for Kensington to put right.

Hey, I need to know how to write a batch file that can set my secondary display as the primary one and then launch a program in it. Is this even possible.
Or is there a program that can I can run through batch to switch the screen first.

A:Write a batch file

I have written enough batch in the last couple of years and I don't believe this would be possible with a batch file.

Don't have any other suggestions for you at this time.

Need help diagnosing what I believe is a malware problem.  Downloaded DDS file here, but when I run, DDS will only output Attach.txt file; no dds.txt file.  I've run in safe mode and normal startup with same results.   I've run the utility on a clean machine, and it always opens two notepad windows (dds.txt and attach.txt).  Unable to get the dds.txt file on the problem machine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Sven

A:DDS Won't Output DDS.txt file

If you cannot get DDS to work, please try this instead. Please download RSIT by random/random from the link provided for your operating system and save it to your desktop.Link 1 for 32-bit versionLink 2 for 32-bit versionLink 1 for 64-bit versionLink 2 for 64-bit versionThis tool needs to run while the computer is connected to the Internet. If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding RSIT attempting to contact the Internet, please allow the connection.Close all applications and windows so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop.Double-click on RSIT.exe to start the program.Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.Read the disclaimer and click Continue. When the scan is complete, a text file named log.txt will automatically open in Notepad.Another text file named info.txt will open minimized.Save the log files to your desktop and copy/paste the contents of log.txt by highlighting everything and pressing Ctrl+C.After highlighting, right-click, choose Copy and then paste the contents into a new topic in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum, NOT here.Copies of both log files are automatically saved in the C:\RSIT folder which the tool creates during the scan.Important: Be sure to mention that you tried to follow the Prep Guide but were unable to get DDS to run.

Hi,
I could not burn iso to cd rw using imgburn with error saying layouts do not match verified failed error. I could see the process of burning and completing and then ejecting the tray messages, then this error occurs and i could not see any file in the cdrw.
It is windows xp , hp laptop.
I am having optiarc dvd rw 7530 a , drive, which i think from its marks, dvd rw, that it should be able to burn.
When i use the microsoft fix it, it says, INstall cd dvd writers, I do not know how to install, cd dvd writers. Is it not auto inbuilt function of cd drive. i raise this question in this forum, as dvd drive is same for xp and windows 7. If any solution, could be had , i will be pleased

Hey guys,
Im trying to write a batch file that will allow me to backup one of my HDDs in my PC. Im running vista, and i have 2 internal HDDs. One is C: which has the OS and all programs installed on it, and the second internal HDD has all my other gear (music, photos, videos, illustrator files, CAD files, etc).

I recently purchased a 500GB external HDD and have been backing up using vistas utility, but i dont like the way it archives all the data into .zip/.rar files and such. I would like to maintain the directory structure from my internal HDD, and back it up to the external. Another thing is...ive created 2 partitions on my external HDD (one for the PC backup - NTFS - about 300GB, and the other to use as extra storage for my PS3 - FAT32 - about 150GB). I used Paragon Partition Manager to do this and apparently that was a success.

So ive written a batch file as follows:

****************************

xcopy /e /d /v /y F: H:\BackUp\F

pause

***************************

which i got from this site http://www.ahuka.com/backup/backup3.html

i tested the batch file on a single smalled folder from my F: and it worked well. But when i tried to backup my entire F:, which is about 250GB, it runs through the command cycle and appears to complete correctly, but when i look on my Hexternal) there are no files or anything, and 50GB has been used (rather than an expected 250GB)

is there a problem with the batch file? or an issue with the way i have partitione... Read more

A:Can someone please help me write a batch file to backup my PC?

Hi

I tried this once with an external drive plugged into my server, i had about 55gb of MP3's to copy over as a backup.

I wrote a similar batch file to yours and scheduled a task to run it.

It didnt work and only copied a small portion of the files.

Last night i tried backing up 55gb of files from one external drive to another using the standard cut and paste procedure, it kept failing, i figured that the external USB drives just couldnt cope with such a large data shift all at once.

I then did cut and paste on sections of the files until all copied over OK.

Suggestion....

Do your copying in blocks of 20GB using cut and paste. I know its slower and not what you want.

Maybe someone on here can suggest if its the USB side of things that is causing the problem.

Regards

A folder and subfoldre remain in my windows xp write to cd temp files. I wrote them to the cd, but they don't go away. I constantly get a message that I have files waiting to write to disk.
When I try renaming or deleting I get an error message telling me they are in use by another program or person.

I can write other files to disk around them, but they are always there. I renamed the original file folder on my hard drive, but that has no effect on the situation.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

A:can't delete file in write to cd area

What are the file / folder names & locations?
Please be as complete / specific as possible.
C:\documents and settings\user name\local settings\temp\file I cant delete.tmp
is more helpful than
file I cant delete.tmp

1. Which version of Windows, to include SP, are you running?

2. When did the problem begin?

3. Boot to safe mode.
In the writable CD drive area of "my computer", try to delete the files. They may not show up in safe mode.

3.b.
If that fails, to to the location of the files / folders & try to delete them.

You may have to set your computer to show hidden, system & protected files.
This works for XP & 2000.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/hiddenfiles.mspx
Also, uncheck "hide file extensions . . "

Also, uncheck "hide protected . . .". Click "yes" when asked if you are sure.
Click "ok".

4. Defrag
If "3" fails, defrag your hard drive.
If defrag is unable to defrag a file, that usually means that the file is corrupt.
Post the report here.

I've got a corrupted file in my CD write folder that I have tried to delete every way I can think of...without success. So every time I log on to the computer a message pops up that says I have files that are ready to be written to a CD. The file and the folder it is contained in are also part of every CD write job I set up since they always in the CD write folder.

Does anyone know how to purge corrupted file from the CD write folder? Not a major problem, but after several months, it is driving me nuts.

I need to create an .bat file that will open SQLPlus, run a simple extract and save the output to a .csv file. Does anyone have something similar I can use?

The SQL is basically:
Select empno, emp_name,emp_phone from emps
where emp_status='active';

Thanks in advance!

A:SQL bat file output for report

look at SQLPlus manual and see how the commandline is constructed. Once you get it, it can simply be incorporated into your batch file by typing the command in a text file and saving it as .bat

Hi, I have no experience really with windows 8 but my mother's newish computer has got it and it's gone crazy on her. I think it's a virus and I tried to install hijackthis and it says it can't creat an output file while I try to unzip it. I have no idea what this means. I tried to download winzip and that didn't change anything (if that's stupid and irrelevant it's because I really, really have no idea what I'm doing). Anybody know what's going on?

Try unzipping the files to a different location, i.e. Desktop, C:\Temp.

i accidently downloaded a virus today and when norton AV detected it, it was unable to delete the file and prompted me to quarantine it. being that i dont want a virus just sitting on my computer, quarantined or not, i opted not to and went to tey to delete it myself. i was unable to because its write protected so i went into the properties and tried to change the write protection but there was no option for that. so then i went into safe mode and ran norton AV again. that didnt work so i tried deleting it myself again and i got the same write protection message. the damn thing just wont go away! i most likely am just overlooking sumething really mundane but can someone help me with this?
thanks

A:(Resolved) cant delete write protected file...

[tsg=welcome][/tsg]

I would go ahead and have norton quarentine the file. It would be much safer than trying to delete it yourself. I belive that once you quarentine the virus there is an option to delete the quarentine file.

Since this is actually about a virus and how to get rid of it, I'm going to request a moderator move this to the security forum. They should be able to provide you with possibly a better answer than what I can.

Good Luck.
