Q: Defective Hinge on HP Envy 17 - Second Envy to Fail

The right hinge on my Envy 17 Touch Screen has failed, causing the case to become separated and the lid to be nearly impossible to close. This is the second Envy 17 to fail in this way. About a year ago my husband's broke and HP spent nearly three months attempting to repair it before finally just shipping him a new one. This appears to be a flaw in the construction of the hinge assembly, and we have noticed that the newer models, such as my husband's replacement, have a much improved design in comparison. We spent about $1,300 on this computer (it has an i7 Core and 16 GB of RAM) and hoped it would hold up for a while. The laptop was great, but now it has become difficult to use without fear of causing further damage. Thank you for any suggestions.

The Hinges on my Envy TouchSmart 15  Notebook are falling apart.  The Screen is now still working but when I turned it on i got a message that the fan is not working and warned that it could overheat.  I have looked on line and found that this is a very common problem with this model.  The hinges are apparently just glued togather and parts break off and cause the fan to stop.  This is rather upsetting and frustrating and will be the last computer I plan to purchase with an HP stamped on it.  What do I do now to get this fixed ?

So, I just sent back my envy 6t-1000 for the second time today because the left hinge completely broke and I can't even open the laptop. I've had it for a year and 5 days exactly and my warranty expired, so I'm paying all out of pocket for hp to fix it.Back in about October I went on a trip, came back and my laptop had a cracked screen and after talking with hp they told me that any 6t-1000 model for a certain time span had a "defective" hinge kit since these were new ones to accommodate the ultra book style.In the end I don't know why I'm really paying for HP to fix the hinge kit that is defective in the first place. Especially for a $171 due to my warranty being overdue by a measly 5 days. Can anyone offer some advice or tips so I can work with hp? I surely don't want this to be "fixed" and magically 6 months down the road end up having to replace the hinge kit a 3rd time.

I'm afraid I also have the same problem.I noticed this last week as I used to get a cracking noise when I open or close the ultrabook. However, last night when I was about to close I had a crack on the screen and after close examination there was problem with the hinge. I still havn't approched anyone to fix it. The protection plan has expired and not sure what next. Help or suggestions regarding this will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Like many, others, I have the faulty hinge issue on my laptop. Broken hinge and top and bottom case is pried apart. The unit was never dropped or abused in any way; the hinges are faulty and the plastic holding them breaks from normal opening and closing the lid. I was on the phone with HP support for an hour with no luck; they couldn't even verify my serial number and product number. Very dissapointed in this and still no way to fix it. Please help.

I neglected to look for reviews on the HP Envy I bought a few years back until now. I see that the problems I was having with the hinges were common and must be DEFECTIVE.I had called HP at the time and they said that this issue was not under warranty and referred me to a local repair company. Unfortunately, the repair costs to fix it was around $300. I didn't have the money at the time and the problem worsened to the point the other hinge broke.Please help restore my faith in HP and help me fix this problem.

Well, yet again the low quality craftsmanship of HP strikes again. This is the 2nd HP Envy laptop to have faulty hinges. The computer is now breaking away from bottom casing. EXACTLY like last time, breaking within months of the warranty expiring. This is a KNOWN issue on HPs end. These computers are $800-$1000, and they expect people to another couple hundred and make money off a faulty product?? SHAME ON YOU HP. Not just the laptops either. Have had 3 printers go after 13 to 15 months.I find it unacceptable!!!!!!!I neef this computer and it is basically useless now....yet again. Never buy HP again!!!

I bought an Envy Touch laptop 15 months ago ( 3 months past warranty) The hinge is defective and cracks and splits from the bottom panel every time I open the screen. I've already sent it in to be repaired a couple months after I purchased it. But then it breaks again...and again. The product is clearly defective. Numerous other people have complained about it, as well.  HP customer service is a joke; it seems like once your warranty expires you can't reach anyone. I'm an attorney and look forward to suing HP for products liability. But in the mean time, does anyone know the best way to fix the hinge issue? is there a secret way to actually reach someone at HP? A place you can recommend I take it to be repaired?  Thanks for any help!

I've had my Envy for a couple years.  Already sent it out once to have the hinges replaced under warranty.  Now the fix is failing again.  The hinge mechanism is simply too weak to support the weight of the screen, and over a spectacularly short period of time, it will fail.  It is a sub standard design, which causes the case to separate. I'm certain that when I call support, the warranty being now over, I will be charged upwards of $200 to send it in and get a new (yet still poorly engineered) hinge.... which will again fail within another year. HP... time to step up to the plate and take care of these failing hinges without your normal fee.  You created a DEFECTIVE product with a substandard design, rendering an otherwise fantastic laptop useless.  A quick search online reveals that this is a widespread problem.  Watcha' gonna do, HP?Thanks!Mike

The right hinge broke on my ENVY m6. Now the left one is about to go. The waranty is up and I have noticed that this is a common problem with this product. I should hope that there has been a recall on this. HP should at least repair the issue free of charge (waranty or no waranty). I take great care of my things and my computer is no exception. Please give me advice on this one. I am extremely disappointed at this point.

Several weeks back my HP Envy Notebook PC left hinge broke and eventually causing the fan to go out. After doing some research, I discovered that this is a common problem with this particular unit. I only hope that Hp will stand behind their product by fixing this issue.

When I open/close the laptop I feel the left back side shifting.  It looks like the hinge is shifting and then separating part of the upper case from the lower case.   I can push the pieces back in place but the next time I open/close the case the same thing happens.   I received the laptop in April 2014.  What steps do I need to take to get this repaired under warranty.  This is a HP ENVY 17t Quad TouchSmart Product number: E2E11AV. Thanks!!

Hello. My right laptop hinge has been progressively loose in the past few months and the body of the right side has become separated. Through normal use, and to be honest, the laptop is only used very sparingly, the left hinge has broken and this has also damaged part of the plastic bezel next to the screen. I am not very happy as I have also seen this on a friends 17" HP and it has completely put me off your brand. These issues are documented far and wide online and I am shocked that you can sell a product with such bad build quality. I always opened the laptop with both handsides and treat things I own with respect and care.

I bought this laptop about 2 years back and while it was under warrenty had to have it fixed because of issues with the hinge, which, I understand is a common problem for the envies. After a year and a half of very delicate care and no longer under warrenty, the hinge is once again breaking down and likely to become completely unusable again. I called tech support about the issue and was told that repairs would now cost 250 dollars, which is, frankly, unacceptable. I really like this laptop, but this issue with the hinge has been a constant headache. I, like another who I saw post about this issue, would love to see HP stand behind their product and have this mistake in production taken care of.

Hinges on my HP Envy dv7 were very tight, even when newly purchased.  Over a year ago, the right hinge cracked and now the hinge is dislocated out of its housing.  When I open the hinge, the hinge is forcing the top fascia panel out, and there is separation at the corner.  It appears to me that this issue is a common problem that can be traced back to overly tight and weak hinges (a design deficiency), since normal usage should not result in this type of damage.  I would appreciate if the HP community is aware of any recall on this product or there is any recourse to have it repaired under workmanship warranty.

My HP Envy 17 recently started popping the back left hinge cover. The hinge is broken off of the PLASTIC piece it screws in to and a bunch of small plastic pieces came out of the cover. This laptop has been extremely taken care of there's no reason for it to break other than a faulty design. Ofcourse this had to happen right after my warranty ran out.  I'm very dissapointed as this is an expensive laptop that shouldn't have these design flaws!

My hinge is broken on my computer.  Has been for over 6 months.  I've contacted y'all once before about this but here I am again.  I am not going to pay over 200 dollars for this to be fixed because it was made crappy.  It is an all to common problem from what I am seeing.  This computer has not been dropped and goes every where in a padded case.  I am a graduate student and the last time yall offered to fix it I couldn't afford to be without it for two weeks or afford the 200 dollars to fix a problem that is hp's problem initially.  It is way past my warranty now but when the problem began it was just a few months past my warranty.  I am sick of not getting any answers as well as not being able to get in touch with anyone from hp who can talk to me about this problem.  I've gone as long as I could with a broken computer and i'm just waiting on the day that the screen just comes completely off of the keyboard.   I've taken to a computer repair guy that basically told me it's because some plastic screws on the inside of my computer are stripped and that is why the hinge isn't working properly, why my screen is floppy and why I can't open or close my computer normally.  Before I even got to the place, he guessed that my computer was an hp because of this same problem he has seen with tons of hp's.  How do you expect loyal customers to pay for this when it was obviously not made correctly or with good parts that wo... My HP ENVY m6 Hinge is broken, laptop is less than 2years old. and its used 90% of the time on desk. Not often removed from Desk. used with wireless keyboard and wireless mouse....It has never been dropped!..The Right side hinge next to power plug broken loose.  each time the screen is opened top and bottom pieces comes apart exposing an opening and screen starts to flicker.  Best thing the HP Rep on phone suggested was  pay $220 + tax charge to send in laptop. I am trying to avoid negative comments about this on twitter and Instagram, but not very pleased with the $220 option for something I did not brake with normal use. To make it worse Rep tells me this is not an issue with this model. Do the people in HP know about this forum?? found 6+pages deep on this issue alone..... This appears to be a problem with the hinge poor design, metal screw against plastic wears out and hinge starts to fail. this is the only issue with this laptop. everything else works fine. .. Please forward this complaint to someone in management to do the right thing thanks!

Hi I've got an issue with the left hinge on my HP Envy laptop which means I can no longer close it, it was very tight and as a result has pulled the plastic frame at the bottom of the screen from the top of the laptop. Seems like this is a very common problem but I haven't been able to find any details on how to fix this in the UK, can someone help?. I had the same problem after about 8 months of having the laptop (despite having taken good care of it!) and this was fixed under warranty but it is now out of warranty. As it was only fixed around 9 months ago and I have taken very good care of it since so I would hope that HP would fix this problem for me. I've always though of HP as a reliable brand so its quite disappointing for there to be such a glaring fault with this model. Thanks

My envy notebook hinge is broken becuase HP has poor design. I need to get this fixed but it seems I cant contact HP other than on this message board because it is out of warranty and I have to pay to call them! I've read in the forum that someone got their laptop repaired at NO COST?? Even after lapse of warranty? Wow, what did you do to convince HP to do this? I have sent several requests and complaints and a HP rep phoned to ask about it then told me to pay $300.00 for the repair. I do believe a substandard quality back cover which undoubtedly costs very cheaply to make is a good trade of for keeping customers. But it seems HP is more concerned about making money once and not considering about after sales and follow up sales. They certainly lost me and I was considering buying the Spectre but not anymore. BTW I checked an online supplier for the back cover and it sells for $35.00 from China but I prefer to do the repairs myself.

Recently, the left hinge has become loose on my HP Envy after having it for over a year and a half with no issues. Hi All,I just came across this topic.My HP Envy M6, purchased in November 2014, also has a broken hinge (left one).It has broken in normal use a couple of months after my warranty expired. I was quoted roughly $250 for the repair which seems to be too high.Also I read it as a design issue with most of the HP Envy customers reporting the same.  I am not sure as to how should this be fixed.Can HP please take notice of this and help me at a very minimum cost or no cost at all (since this seems like a design issue and too many customers reported the same issue). Thanks in advance.

I bought my HP Envy 360 at the beginning of fall semester this year (August 2016) and I opened it up this morning (October 30, 2016)  only to find the hinge popped out of place, the screen splitting from the back, and a screw breaking loose from the inside. I can't close my laptop now and I have no idea what to do to fix this, and a quick search found that this was a common problem in Envy models. My laptop is still under warranty, but how do I get this fixed? I have a lot of papers and school work due and a working laptop is a necessity right now. Please help!

I just joined this forum when I did a search on HP Envy hinge problems and found so many comments.  I am also having a problem with my left hinge which is causing separation of my case.  My computer is still on warranty for about another week so I submitted a claim through the HP warranty center which was denied (I think. The message wasn't clear but the header said my case was closed). I take care of my equipment with my prior laptop (much cheaper ACER) lasting about 5 years.  The more expensive HP shouldn't be considered a disposable item within a year. Any help or advise on what else I can do to keep my laptop functional would be greatly appreciated!

 I have an issues with my hinges. But not only that, I also have a bright spot on my screen, issues with the bottom cracking (caused by the hinge crack), and finally some of the plastic fins are missing where the heat exhaust is . ans some trouble with wifi adapter ( Ralink RT3290 ) , My problem is that my warranty has already expired and I cannot afford costly repairs. This is my primary computer too. Knowing that I couldn't afford costly repairs, I have tried to do temporary fixes to it myself, but they aren't going to hold forever.I need help plesae , this laprop cost me 847 $ .

Hi, i have had this laptop for quite a while now and is well out of warranty but my hinge is now at the point where i have to very gently close it for fear of breaking the screen off. it is mainly the right hinge but the left is showing signs of this also. could you please advise what you or indeed i can do about this as this was obviously a design fault that was never really acted on. Regards Gerald

Hello, my HP Envy m6 left hinge recently broke. I have not dropped it, and always keep it in a temperature controlled environment. I am very worried because I have not done anything to cause this and every time I open the device it creaks. I have not been using it very much until a solution is found to fix it. I am worried it has something to do with the battery recall of overheating batteries even though it says mine is not eligible, I just wonder if it hasn't been identified yet. Thanks.

My computer hinge which connects the screen to the keyboard snapped off from the screen part of the computer. The screen and keyboard still opperate perfectly fine but shutting the computer causes the screen to glitch. I am under HP HW Maintenance Offsite Support for the next 5 months. #HPExpertDayHinge is a physical part and the damage depends on usage. You will have to call HP and setup a service or take the unit to a authorized service center.

Hi, the left hinge cracked out of nowhere, problem is I have no idea how to repair it without spending more money than my laptop is worth. I've also seen that this is a common problem among HP Envy m6 laptops. Has HP offered any kind of recall on this manufacturer defect? I bought my notebook at best buy 4 years ago so I am no longer under warranty. Please help me with this, this computer is my only one and I cannot afford for the problem to get worse.

Hello, I have an almost two year old Envy 17, and the left hinge has recently broken.  A local repairman told me the entire bottom part of the laptop would have to be replaced, but I thought that perhaps HP had a simpler and less expensive solution.  I've always had good experience using HP products.

I have the same broken left Hinge problem which lots of Hp Users Had and I never dropped my laptop and always be a carefull user.  I am using my laptop since 5 months in this condition becuase I am scared that I will never find a trustfull service or a fully resolved repairing procedure. I am scared that someone will open the case and just put some glue in the hinge with an attitude of '''hey next time you should not dropp your laptop if you love it so much. ''' and they will charge me extreame amount of money.I will appriciate a lot if someone can help me or give suggestions.

I have this HP Envy m6-n113dx i purchased this notebook on November 2015.  The problem my laptop hinge left side.  No falls, drops, or damage. Everything works fine except for this hinge .I do know that my pc is out of warrenty, however this is a common manufactor issue. When i check that my warranty expire last month ago april 20 2016. I would like for my notebook to be repaired so please hp help me.
