I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Firstly, please excuse my lacking of computer knowledge, I'm merely a scatterbrained teen looking for some help. I'm not even sure this thread is in the right place.

I've looked around the web for the longest time for a solution to this problem, but have found nothing but advice on restarting the computer, which does nothing to help.

This flashing cursor is very annoying, and not only is it a visual irritant, but ever since it started to flash, my computer has been running slower than usual. I've checked task manager for any strange or unusual processes that might be trying to run and keep failing and restarting, but everything seems normal there.

Currently I'm running a virus scanner to see if any malware has tampered with anything, but so far no risks there besides the usual few tracking cookies.

For now, to keep me from pulling my hair out from the massive irritation this problem brings, I have went into the mouse settings and changed the 'working in background' cursor to the regular pointer to keep it from visually flashing.

I'd be very grateful if someone could be of some assistance; for if this is causing some hazardous problem with my computer, simply hiding the flashing cursor will do no good.

I was having an issue with my Windows 7 cursor flickering between 'arrow' and 'working in background' at an irritianting rate and found the following TechSupportGuy thread a couple of minutes ago:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/642572-mouse-cursor-constantly-flickering-between.html

One of the posts in the thread lead me to the solution but unfortunately it seems most people have opted for reinstalling the OS instead!

Given the the original thread is closed I decided to create a new one and post the solution here in an attempt to prevent people from taking such drastic measures to get rid of this (incredibly irritant) issue in the future.

I simply disabled the Windows Search service and killed the process behind it (SearchIndexer.exe) in Task Manager. My cursor is now back to normal

Disabling this service means any new files will not be indexed although you can re-enable it and leave the pc running for a couple of hours every now and again so that new files are indexed. Hope this helps!

From time to time my cursor displays the "Working in background" annotation when nothing is really happening. It is not much performance decreasing but it is annoying. Also when this happens it sometimes freezes my whole computer and causes it to crash or "Blue Screen" This laptop is fairly new and has not been doing this in the past. This started maybe a day or two ago.

The only new programs i have downloaded right before this started happening was LibreOffice as my Microsoft Office was unresponsive (not because of this problem)

I have also run scans with AVG and Avast as multiple websites have suggested it be a virus. Nothing came up.

Recently out of curiosity whenever my mouse went to working in background mode i would open up task manager and see if anything new popped up, and for the few seconds that it was "working" a new program called "wuauclt.exe" So i did some research on this and it was apparently a vital windows updater so i decided against removing it. Also whenever i tried to close it in task manager it would not let me saying i needed premission even though i am the Administrator.

Thank you very much and and help is appreciated.

My Windows update settings were changed without my permission to 'Install updates automatically (Recommended)', I think this happened because a program i installed.

Windows automatically downloaded and installed updates, and ever since then I've noticed my cursor changing from 'Normal Select' to the 'Working In Background' cursor every 15 minutes.. and lasts for about 5-6 seconds. It's already driving me crazy. This could have only started because of an update, Malwarebytes detects no malware.

Below is a capture of the latest updates installed on the 5th.

Do you have a restore point available before Installation of the updates  ?

If so...do a system restore.

have you been able to look in Task Manager as the 'working in background ' thing occurs ?

Hi,

Looks like I'm back with another laptop problem, after my BSOD situation (here:BSOD Driver_IRQL_not_less_or_equal.

Just now when i tried to start up my laptop I got a blackscreen saying
"Windows failed to restart, a recent hardware or software change might be the cause" and it gives me the options to either "Launch start up repair(recommended) or Start Windows normally". I haven't updated or changed my hardware or software, and there was no disruption to my power supply so I'm not sure of the cause.

I tried the "launch start up repair" option but it just leads to a black screen with cursor. My mouse cursor works using my laptop but when i connect my usb mouse the light on my optical mouse lights up but the mouse cursor doesnt move on screen.

I have no idea whats going on, I just hope this isnt malware related again...any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
here's my laptop specs if it helps:
32 bit operating system
windows 7 (Originally installed, that came pre-installed on the system when I purchased it)
Age of system: 1.5 year
I have never re-installed OS

Hey guys,

When using windows my mouse cursor has started lagging as I move it around the screen. By this I mean that if I try and move the cursor in a continuous circle around the screen, rather than it travelling in a smooth arc, it will skip and jump around the screen.

Changing the mouse didn't fix the issue, and I've run AVG, adaware, and a bunch of other anti-malware programs (that I don't have the names of to hand as their on the other computer) and they all said the system was clean in both normal and safe mode. I did notice the ones I run regularly (AVG and adaware) took AGES to run their scans, and while the programs were running the mouse was pretty much unusable, with me having to resort to keyboard commands to shut the programs down once they had finished. The problem persisted in safe mode.

I'm running windows xp sp2
asus a8n-e mobo
athlon 64 3500+ venice
1gb ram
150gb hard drive (with over 20gb free)
geforce 7800gt

The system is over 2 years old now and i've been having trouble with the mobo chipset fan slowing down gradually over the last 6 months or so, with it now stuck at less than 1/3 its normal speed. Despite this, all temps read as normal, although just how accurate the sensors are I have no idea.
SO my question is - what's broken? Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot for your help in advance.

Hello Lisagascoigne. Welcome to the forum.

Try this:
Start (or restart) the PC, as soon as you see that first (Bios) screen come up start pressing the F8 key repeatedly. This should bring up the Advanced Boot Options window.

Use you keyboard to move down to select "Last Know Good Configuration" and the press ENTER.

See if that helps.

We have some XP machines that can not boot up normally. When boot up, we cannot see windows log in screen, just only blue background and white mouse cursor, we can move mouse cursor only. I have already tried to boot windows in safemode and restore last known condition with no luck. Even when I try to repair windows by XP OS install CD, the setup process is still stuck at same status on first reboot, only background and mouse cursor.
I don't know it may cause by a virus or not.

Using XP too, either with SP2 or SP3, AVG or McAfee entreprise anviruses.
The computer started to crash in Windows, then they rebooted, were able to logon again, but it was really slow and needed to reboot again. At this second reboot, same problem as you have, no desktop, no icons, just the cursor...
We tried to replace explorer.exe, repair MBR, scan for viruses, nothing...

Title is supposed to say that it is NOT animated.

I recently purchased a Dell Studio 1737 direct from Dell.

Every time I turn on my laptop and log into my account, there would be a blue, animated circle cursor indicating that the laptop was just turned on and that it is working in the background.

Later on however, I noticed that whenever there were programs working in the background, my cursor shows a blue circle with a light in it, but it wouldn't be animated. This usually happens about 15 minutes after the laptop has turned on. I'm assuming that the cursor SHOULD be animated just like how it was during start-up.

I tried switching the pointers (eg. aero large to aero regular) and it seemed to solve the problem (i think), but after a while, the circle becomes frozen again; I am faced with the same issue. I tried downloading and installing different cursor sets (from DeviantART), and the ones that WERE animated in ANYWAY, were also frozen after a couple minutes.

I'm wondering if anybody else has had this problem and would greatly appreciated it if they provided a solution.

I'm using a 64-bit 7 Home Premium with ATI Radeon HD 3650.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I use win xp pro service pack 2.
I don't know how or when (little brothers) but my mouse pointer goes to the "working in background" graphic from startup.
I noticed in task manager, in the processes list that regsrv32.exe keeps blinking on and off. Which would be the reason for the pointer problem.
This happens in safe mode as well.
I ran two diff online virus scans which said i'm clear. Ran adaware. Ran yahoo anti-spy which removed something.
I've opened hijackthis and things seem ok except for a bho that won't fix or delete.
I've run CWShredder, which said it removed VX2.Look2Me. After restart it said the same thing. I then used a symantec tool for look2me removal. Said I was clear. Even tried manual removal steps. Nothing there. CWShredder still says it removes it each time I run it.

I have nothing unusual in my startup list. No regsrv32.exe listed. No sign of W32/Rbot-GM worm.
I tried searching for regsrv32.exe on my computer. The search thing must be faulty because it finds nothing. In my system32 folder though i have the proper microsoft file.

The last thing I tried was a windows update. 14 files were listed. After restart, automatic update still came up asking to download and install 4 files.
I did it again, and again, and again. The 4 files won't install.

despair.
pls help

Hi, this problem happened recently after transferring around 1GBs of data into my hard drive. Nearly the end of the transfer, i realise the transfer stops at 99% so i decided to cancel it but when i clicked on the cancel button it doesn't respond and so does my desktop icons. I went on by pressing the restart button so it reboot but it gets to the starting windows screen but no animations of the 4 colours came up. Then it prompted me that my computer have problems loading windows so i selected startup repair but it get stuck at the blue flowery background with my mouse and it does nothing. I have tried AVG Tuneup as well.

additional info: computer not overclocked all on factory settings.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Edit: It reaches the start up repair and begins searching but it takes a very long time. i restarted and tried entering windows using safe mode but when it says it loading the files it turned black and went straight to startup repair again.

Hello:
The mouse started to stray and stopped working in the middle of doing something, i.e. eBay, typing word and etc. which is very annoying and first of all, I lose all of the work done due to stopping of the mouse.

However, the mouse started working as if nothing wrong, once I restarted by 'force' restart ..... pushing the button in the middle of the PC. Otherwise, the PC is all fine and working OK.

I did apply Malwarebytes to combat the issue, however the issue does not resolve.

Any help on this would be truoly appreciated.

Thanks,

Did you try a different mouse? If you still have the same problem with a new mouse, see if there are any drivers for the mouse from it's manufacturers web site.
Also try a Clean Boot, if that works, then add one startup item at a time till the mouse acts weird again, then you know that is the problematic program.

It could be the "Windows Indexing" process which creates and modifies file indexes to make local file searches faster. By default it's enabled but I've disabled mine:

Right click the drive and choose "Properties"
At the bottom of the "General" page, untick "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties"

Next box that appears, tick "Apply changes to folders, subfolders & files"

Before this round of trouble I discovered a problem with one of my graphics cards when they were in SLI with Blue screens and other nasty little things occuring when running Windows; I removed my secondary graphics card from the system to see if I could get a more stable OS, which I did.

I decided to test to see if the other graphics card running on it's own would lead to a stable system, however I was getting zeros on the VGA BIOS bootup screen and other problems before I even reached Windows Vista.

I did sucessfully boot into Vista and enter my password (using the keyboard) and move the mouse around, however once I had logged into my profile Vista began asking me if I wanted to install the drivers for the keyboard and mouse, I selected to update from the Internet and when Vista did not find any drivers for either device it disabled them.
Eventually I got both the keyboard and mouse functioning again by reinstalling Intellipoint pro and the Logitech setpoint.

While using the second graphics card I noted some distortions such as zeros appearing on the VGA BIOS screen during boot up, so I decided to switch out the graphics cards again, again this caused Vista to forget about my keyboard and mouse, I am however able to get onto Vista a combination of a cheap usb mouse I had laying around and the Vista on screen keyboard.

The fix I used previously (reinstalling of Intellipoint and Setpoint) has not works,I have also attempted to manually install the drivers through dev... Read more

i'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue- I have a laptop and my click cursor has suddenly had an issue of 'hanging up' where I'll click on something and nothing happens. It seems erratic; sometimes I'll click several times before anything happens.

i've run Norton Antivirus and Diskdoctor; nothing showed up. I've rebooted a couple of times.

I just noticed that the touchpad will register a click when the 'click pad' (if that's what you call it) doesn't. I'm not sure if this will happen 100% (a possible work around).

Do you have any ideas of what is going on?

Note: if you need some suggestions on which tools to use, let me know.

Afterwards, test functionally of mouse and keyboard.

You can live monitor both file and registry access using Process Monitor; along with this get Process Explorer.

Both invaluable analytic tools.

You will see an icon for File Monitoring in the Process Monitor toolbar -- have a gander there first. You will see a lot of activity.

In Process Explorer, monitor the active processes for CPU usage -- that will show you if any inordinate activity is assocated with one processs -- and what it belongs to.

Hi Friends... i've been using a sony vaio laptop since 2 years with configuration :
processor : core i3 (2.26 GHz)
ram : 4Gb
OS : win 7 home premium 64 bit

It was working excellent till yesterday except the touchpad. The touchpad stopped working properly about 8 months ago. It was not a big matter to me as i only use USB mouse as pointing device. But yesterday i experianced a strange error. WHEN I START WINDOWS THE CURSOR AUTOMATICALLY SELECTS THE LAST ICON ON MY DESKTOP AND IT STRATS BLINKING.
EVEN WHEN I OPEN "MY COMPUTER" OR ANY FOLDER OR ANY DROP DOWN MENU,IT OPENS WITH THE LAST DRIVE/THE LAST FOLDER/THE LAST FILE PRESELECTED AND WHEN I CLICK ANY OTHER DRIVE OR FOLDER THE CURSOR ONLY OPENS THE LAST DRIVE/FOLDER/FILE.
WHICH MEANS I CAN'T USE MY COMPUTER AT ALL.But sometimes it works fine about 30 mins and then again the same problem begins. i did a factory reset, checked registry errors with "Reginout",Scanned with "Kaspersky internet security",reinstalled "Synaptic Device Driver"....
and tried to use another 2 mouse...
but nothing solves the problem... THIS PROBLEM IS BECOMING HEADACHE FOR ME... even i have to restart my laptop 5 times to get 30 mins of "working time" to type this post.... becouse WHEN I OPEN THE BROWSER,
THE SCROLLBAR AUTOMATICALLY GOES DOWN AND IF I TRy TO PULL IT UP, IT BLINKS AND WHEN I RELEASE.. IT AGAIN GOES TO THE SAME POSITITION... PLZ HELP ME OUT GUYS...

A:Cursor is not working properly

Hello SJG and welcome to Seven Forums.

Couple of things to try. For the touchpad:

Sony eSupport

For the cursor:

SONY Viao Erratic Cursor movements - Windows 7 and Vista - Viao VGN - Microsoft Answers

And in Device Managment if any other hardware has a driver problem:

Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly

But one thing you said concerns me. You said you did a "factory reset". I'm guessing you mean you reset the Vaio to factory specifications by using Vaio Care and accessing the hidden recovery partition, or by using the recovery discs you should have made. If this is how you did the "factory reset" then any software problems should have been resolved. That might indicate a hardware problem.

The problem I am having is my trackball cursor is jerky and slow. I have tried the following:

Ran CCleaner.
Checked Task Manager for unnecessary processes (not sure about some of those)
Re-booted.

It seems to work fine in Windows Explorer, but not in dialog boxes or games. If I try to click on a button in a dialog box, it takes 2 - 3 clicks to make it connect. Same thing in games. If I "shake" the trackball, sometimes it works, but not always.

Please help, as I am a BIG gamer and can't play......going crazy....

Thanks in advance for the help.

I have a HP 2000 Notebook PC; can't seem to find the model numbers or anything. My touchpad just randomly stopped working when I opened my laptop this morning. I'm using an external mouse right now but need to have access to the touchpad. I have already attempted the following: Rebooting 5 timesTrying function keysToggling on/off: there is not light above the touch pad, and double tapping does not facilitate any change in the light or function of the touchpadReinstalling touchpad driver twiceSearching mouse properties: does not list touchpad as mouse device. Thanks in advance.

I have just bought a new laptop with Vista Home Premuim installed and I have noticed that the cursor often doesn't work in the centre of the screen. It will appear, and move around, but if I want to select something, and I click, it instead deselects the entire window. I can select things on the ouside edges of the screen, it's just a space in the centre where I can't, and it's in every programme, as well as on the desktop. Can I fix this? Is this a Vista problem? Or is there something wrong with my new computer?

My Cursor is not working good, it tooks 2, 3, 4 or even 5 clicks to enter something on a search bar, close a window or open a window. I tried shaking the Cursor cable, still nothing. Can someone help me?

A:Cursor not working properly

Are you referring to clicking with a mouse. If so then your mouse may be faulty. Can you try another mouse.

If this is not the problem could you explain it in more detail.

Hi, sorry, not very good at this sort of thing, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

1) Thursday night - mouse was working. Sunday evening, mouse is not working.
2) In the device manager it tells me I have two HID-compliant mouse drivers, location: "On USB Input Device" - I only have one USB input for my mouse. I tried disabling one of the drivers to see if it was a conflict problem. No luck.

Any ideas? The mouse is a "Wireless Optical Mouse M/N:SM-502C"

Thanks for reading

Hey! This is my first post on this forum, hope i posted in the right thread
I found others with simmular problems, but have tried their solutions, did not work for me.
So the problem is that my computer(my pc litterally froze at this point, thanks chrome for restoring recent history) randomly do these freezes, where i can move the cursor, but nothing on the screen is responsive. CTRL-ALT-DLT, ALT-TAB, all those are unresponsive aswell, i am not very patient, but i waited 15 minutes a while ago, and nothing happened. The only temporary fix i found, was to force it to shut down at the power button. This happens, as mentioned, randomly, even while surfing the web which shouldnt take much power.
Now i got so frustrated that i decided to fully wipe my secondary HDD and completely reset OS and everything on my primary SSD, but not even that worked... I am no expert on these more complex complications, any help is very appreciated!

(Recently i havent been using my pc alot, because i have been busy with school, so i havent really noticed when this first occured.)

I have an Acer E3-111 that I bought less than a year ago. It's my fourth Acer PC, and I've generally been very happy with the company's products and support. I upgraded to Windows 10 from the preinstalled Win 7 a few months ago, and I have had serious problems with my touchpad/cursor ever since. The cursor stops moving or jumps, and when I try to select text, it often freezes in the middle of the selection process. It's making the computer unusable. I contacted Acer and got the driver update, but it did not work. I contacted Acer again, and spoke to a very rude gentleman who said he could do nothing for me. I contacted Microsoft and one of their techs took remote access of my PC and did something that briefly helped, but then the problem returned. I considered going back to Win 7, but I no longer have the restore point -- too much time had passed, and the old installation got deleted on a system cleanup. Acer eventually sold me my original system installation on a USB for about $50, but did not tell me it would require a full system wipe, which I don't want to do. Does anyone have any idea how to fix these cursor problems on the E3-111 in Windows 10?

A:Cursor/touchpad not working since Win 10 upgrade

IIRC those models came with either a Elantech or Synaptics touchpad. Both drivers have been updated several times since the release of Windows 10 and are distributed via Windows Update. Check to make sure you don't have optional updates that haven't been installed...

Hello

I'm having a problem with my cursor. Every few seconds it loads at random. Sometimes when I'm clicking a file usually an mp4 it doesn't even open it. I tried without my mouse (Windows Seven Lenovo) and it still won't open.

Also this problem might be gone but before when I opened microsoft word, the save function would randomly appear. I press escape but it would appear again and again.

I think it might have to do with ask.com appearing on google chrome but I thought I took care of it with malwarebytes.

Help would appreciated and thanks in advance for any help .

A:Satellite M70-181 - cursor and escape key not working

As far as I know FN+F10 or FN+F11 activated the integrated keypad or cursor control keys.

Satellite M70 is pretty old machine and I don't remember which driver may be responsible for this control. Try to reinstall Toshiba Accessibility or FN esse utility. Maybe this will help.

I had M70 long time ago but I’ve never used such option.
