MS Windows Explorer - does it need firewall approval?

Q: MS Windows Explorer - does it need firewall approval?

On my NIS firewall, Microsoft Windows Explorer is permitted internet access - on the "automatic" setting. Should I remove it from the list? If not, why does it need access?

Preferred Solution: MS Windows Explorer - does it need firewall approval?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I run a windows 10 PC and I am having a challenge finding how to increase the amount of time you have when you make a change to your Monitors.

Right now it gives me 14 seconds or it reverts the changes, is there a way to extend this to 1 Minute or 2 minutes?

Hi Guys,<o:p></o:p>
Good Evening !!<o:p></o:p>
Here is the thing on which I need ideas and help from you guys.<o:p></o:p>
Presently we are in that phase where we are migrating all the machines from Windows 7 to Windows 10.<o:p></o:p>
For this we are using windows 10 dashboard to approve the assets which are ready to migrate from 7 to 10 and presently we are doing it manually by going to dashboard
site and then we have few options to enter the asset tag and then edit it and check the approved option and update so that the asset will be ready for the migration.<o:p></o:p>
And now comes my requirement.<o:p></o:p>
I want to automate this process using power-shell script every time when we get some request to approve one asset i want to write a script so that it will reduce the
manual intervention and also reduce the time to approve the assets.

<o:p style="">I already wrote two line script like example by using invoke-webrequest
command we can access the dashboard. from their on wards i am unable to move further like how to define new objects and all. </o:p>
Please do help me in this how to proceed or any ideas how to do this to approach our  requirement.<o:p></o:p>
Thanks in Advance :) <o:p></o:p>

Hi everyone, here's my problem:
I changed the default rule for outgoing traffic so that erything that doesn't match a rule is blocked. That's okay, nothing can go out now. Then I add program rules allowing needed softs to access the internet freely. This works fine too, except for Internet Explorer. I can't get iexplore.exe or even ielowutil.exe access the internet without adding a rule for TCP 80.
If someone could explain it, I really don't understand why IExplore requires 2 rules to work while the first rules should allow him unrestricted access...

My elderly dad uses an old desktop that I purchased when 98SE was king.
If he wanted a new desktop I would buy it for him immediately! 99% of the
time he uses the web for email only. I'm constantly checking and updating
the system for him.

A couple of weeks ago the firewall started prompting with a popup that
usually means - MALWARE ALERT!

Here's the text of the popup:

"Windows Explorer has changed since the last time you opened it.
This could be because you have updated it recently. Do you want
to allow it access to the network?"

Even when my dad puts a tick in the "remember" box, the same popup
keeps repeating.

I found numerous posts on this forum and many others about this potential
malware threat.

I ran a couple of antivirus apps which found nothing.

HijackThis created a very short log, compared to many others I've seen.
There isn't a whole lot of stuff running on this old Gateway. I can't find
anything that looks like malware. Some of the startup items may look
strange. I've been creating scripts for years that control and automate
all sorts of processes on my home and business desktops. Those file
names like Goodby Transtext!.lnk and DeleteVirtural_CD_Key.lnk are
shortcuts to my own scripts. I can assure you, my scripts are not trying
to break through the firewall to access the web! In fact, I've created
scripts for my business that add layers of protection to our LAN.

Here's the log:

Two days ago my EEEPC901/XP's screen went black and wouldn't come back on. After a reboot I got a BSOD saying it couldn't restart windows. I don't remember what the actual message was, but managed to get the computer up and running again after disabling Hyper threading in the BIOS.I was having some problems earlier with installing windows updates and the computer seemed to lag sometimes so I decided to check for a virus. Usually I use Housecall because I'm a bit paranoid about virusscanners such as Norton and McAffee and even AVG gets on my nerves. Housecall installed fine but gave me a "Iexplorer couldn't load sometingsomething" malfunction. I dont remember the details because Hitman pro fixed the issues. (Had some agentX trojans?). Now I wanted to be sure my computer was bug-free and tried to use Malwarebyte. It installed perfectly, but after the database was updated it gave me the "the current database is not supported by this version of Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. Please download the latest version of the program." Uninstalled it, used MBAM-clean to clean up, cleaned after with Ccleaner (both files and register), rebooted, reinstalled, ran without updating. This got it running but when MBAM starts scanning the program closes itself without any warnings after 4 seconds. Ive tried everything, removed all the anti-virus leftovers, even tried installing the MBAM prefs exe that was posted for someone else. No improvement. Install... Read more

Since yesterday I've been dealing with several viruses and trojans that took over my computer. I had bugs crawling on my screen, my desktop bg was a blue screen saying I had spyware and adware...had yellow alert icon and balloons directing me to download adware and spyware programs. My windows firewall and task manager were disabled by my "Network Administrator." Computer was running slow...etc etc.
I've run several scans, mcafee (my main antivirus software) pc doctor, norton, windows defender, malwarebytes anti-malware, super antispyware and kaspersky.

So far everything has returned to normal. All that's left now is that I can't enable my Windows Firewall, every time I restart my Windows Explorer crashes several times, and McAfee alerts me several times that it detected and removed a trojan called Qhosts-1!hosts.

I tried running SDfix and Combofix but I get an error with each that the software can't run because I am missing a clb.dll file.

Included are the malwarebytes anti-malware, super anti-spyware, kaspersky and HJT after all of this was completed.

I just want to know if there is anything still there...thanks so much for the help.

Right now we're running ver 8.x of NAV.

The last time I spoke with a tech about it, he recommended that I sit back a while and not install it, due to some bugs within the program.

What is a good Spyware detection and prevention program I should consider using on the clients?

Hi- Newbie here, and of course I have a problem.

I tend to put my laptop in standby mode overnight, but once a week or so I do a full shut-down. I did one of those last night, and when I started things up this morning, I immediately noticed that my wallpaper was changed to the default one for XP, and all the files I had on my desktop were gone (applications remained however). I got a welcome screen like I had just done a new install.

Same sort of thing happened for both Firefox and IE (I use both). Both are acting like fresh installs and, most importantly, all my favorites are gone.

I've just scanned with both Malwarebytes and MSE - both came back with nothing found.

Just to add a datapoint - here's what I'm running...
Windows XP Service Pack 3 x86 NTFS
Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702

Any idea what happened here? Any idea how to get my favorites back? Of course, it's been awhile since I've backed up.

Appreciate any input.

It sounds like you might have a corrupted user profile
and the computer logged you into a default guest account.
I am seeing this but you may want to do a more extensive
web search on your problem to get some more specific information.
May also want to try system restore first in case it is a registry error.

Ok, so I have built a PC before, but it was over 10 years ago and since then, I'm kind of out of the loop. I'm looking to build a new PC now and have picked everything out. Was wondering what you guys think, and what you would suggest. I am lost on some things.

I mainly want it for casual use, photoshopping, video editing and some gaming maybe. I tried to research everything before choosing but a lot of it is still over my head. Example, the Vishera, Haswell, Zambebi stuff on the CPUs. It isn't the brand, what is it and how do I know which is better?

Anyway, here is what I have. Feel free to tell me I have no idea what I'm doing. 😃

Hi All.

I frequently run processes on my pc that go all night. I also often go away from the office for a few days and then need to access the pc (which was left on) remotely to work.

My problem is that when windows finds an update, it just installs it and restarts when it wants to... which can be right in the middle of an important automation.

I also sometimes find that I can't access the pc remotely because it has somehow switched itself off, I'm assuming after an update (sleep is set to 'never').

How can I get Win 7 to download, and tell me about an update, then wait until I say "install"?

All help will be hugely appreciated.

What is the function of Admin approval mode (AAM) and UAC? Is there a link between UAC and AAM? Are they interrelated?
When we turn OFF the AAM, UAC also gets OFF Automatically. Is this an intended behavior?

A:Difference Between UAC and Admin Approval mode

It's actually written in the explain tab of the policies. But in short, yes it's by design that UAC will get turned off if you disable Admin Approval Mode.
User Account Control: Turn on Admin Approval Mode
This policy setting controls the behavior of all User Account Control (UAC) policy settings for the computer. If you change this policy setting, you must restart your computer.
The options are:
• Enabled: (Default) Admin Approval Mode is enabled. This policy must be enabled and related UAC policy settings must also be set appropriately to allow the built-in Administrator account and all other users who are members of the Administrators group
to run in Admin Approval Mode.
• Disabled: Admin Approval Mode and all related UAC policy settings are disabled. Note: If this policy setting is disabled, the Security Center notifies you that the overall security of the operating system has been reduced.
User Account Control: Use Admin Approval Mode for the built-in Administrator account
This policy setting controls the behavior of Admin Approval Mode for the built-in Administrator account.
The options are:
• Enabled: The built-in Administrator account uses Admin Approval Mode. By default, any operation that requires elevation of privilege will prompt the user to approve the operation.
• Disabled: (Default) The built-in Administrator account runs all applications with full administrative privilege.

I sadly report that after submitting the log ... I message was displayed about security software not being functional. So I tried to launch TrendMocro. It wouldn't fully load and then I ot a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error message which said Runtime Error! Program: C:\PROGRA~1\TRENDM~1\INTERN~1\PcCtlCom.exe. Once I click the x on this window another comes up which says follows which speaks about the PcCtlCom module encountering a problem - send error report. These 2 windows are re-occurring and won't go away. During the first round I got to a window which said "Error Report Contents -
C:\DOCUMEN1\jzd8tj\Temp\WER45dc.dir00\PcCtlCom.exe.mdmp. -and- C:\DOCUMEN1\jzd8tj\Temp\WER45dc.dir00\appcompat.txt" .

What a bummer!

I have tried to uninstall and then re-instsll Trend Micro. No luck. It bombs out as soon as the error message window pops-up. Says "Process Intrupted".

Any thoughts? I still have network connectivity.

Hello all, I have two MSO2003 problems..

Problem 1:

Win7 HP.. when I start Outlook 03, a popup asks

Do you want the following program to make changes to this computer:

File: Outlook.exe
Publisher: MS
File origin: hard drive on this computer

This has been happening for a while.. I dont remember when it started, but it seems it began when the reading pane thing below started..

Problem 2:

The reading pane will -not- stay on the bottom of the sceen when Outlook starts up.. I change it time and again from side pane to bottom pane and it just doesnt stay bottom when Outlook is restarted..

Any ideas? No viruses, or malware/spyware on the machine.. MSE updates/runs full scan every night.

Thanks, TJ

Hi guys,

Could anyone explain to me why Windows Firewall starts when I have Comodo Firewall installed and running?

It makes me nervous!

I have a fresh installation of Comodo Internet Security.

The only reason I knew it was running was because I got the message after a reboot, screenshot 1. When I went into control panel it confirmed I had two firewalls running, screenshot 2. So I have no idea why WF started or how long it had been running.

I seem to remember when I had BitDefender IS2013 it did the same thing, is it to do with my system maybe?

Why does it do that? Is there any way I can ensure Windows Firewall stays off?

BTW, in screenshot 2 you can see I have multiple antivirus programs. well they are Comodo and Emsisoft AM, as well as a rather annoying addition in Advanced System Care Ultimate. Am I right in thinking Emsi is more malware than virus oriented, and compatible with an AV. Also when I installed Advanced System Care Ultimate, they state that their AV is designed to work alongside the main AV. I have it turned off although it still shows up here.

Thanks for any ideas and support, Chig

A:Windows Firewall starts with 3rd party firewall installed and active

Personally I would scrap the lot and install Microsoft Security Essentials. You certainly do not need any third party "Advanced System Care" software with Windows 7. I think you are heading for all sorts of conflicts with what you have installed at the moment. You will find your system speeds up when you get rid of all that bloat. I bet if you check Start up they are all there jockeying for position and slowing your system down. Ughhhh!

I have a problem with Windows Firewall disabling itself every 5 or 6 hours on my computer! Windows Firewall will automatically disable itself and give the following message "Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to protect your computer." with only one option "use recommended settings" but I can click that option but after 5 or 6 hours, Windows Firewall gives the same message and is disabled! and I have to go into control panel and fix it! I have a program that cannot connect to the internet because it will automatically update to a new version with less stickers for my photos and deactivate my license for that program and forces me to revo uninstall and reinstall my old version due to this Windows Firewall problem!

First mate, you'll want to scan the computer with an antivirus program. There are numerous free ones if you do not own one yet, such as AVG free, Avast free, or MS Security Essentials. Only use one, otherwise they will conflict with eachother. Use the full scan option if available.

A good program to use in addition to an antivirus program is malwarebytes free, but up to you if you want to install it or not, and run the additional full scan.

Next, run this: Diagnose and fix Windows Firewall service problems automatically

Hey everyone,
This is my first post, and first time I've not been able to solve my problem by searching previous posts...so hopefully someone can help me out.
I'm trying to install a downloaded .exe file, and Windows firewall is blocking it regardless of whether the firewall is active or not; the specific error message & the subsequent Windows help screen are attached. The Windows help screen indicates that the file came from an "untrusted" website, and suggests adding the source website to the "trusted" list if I'm sure that the file is safe (which I am, and I did...and I'm getting the same results when I try to open the .exe).
After the adding the source site to the "trusted" category failed, I attempted to run the file after completely shutting off Windows firewall (along with Bitdefender, which I'm also running). I'm still getting the same error message; it's as if Windows firewall is just ignoring me...can anyone help me either get around this, or tell me how to really shut off the firewall so it stops blocking this file?

A:Windows firewall blocking .exe file even after firewall is disabled

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

You can turn the Windows Firewall back on. The issue has nothing to do with the Firewall.

You can turn the Bitdefender back on too.

The issue is probably caused by one or more settings within IE. You might try resetting IE:

Firewall Issue(s) - Windows XP Professional & Comodo Firewall Pro

Friday/December 3rd 2007: This morning I was looking at the features and settings of Comodo Firewall Pro Version Accidentally I clicked ‘no’ when a learned prompt came up asking if I wanted to allow Avast Free Edition to connect to the net. I believe it was Avast. Anyway I figured I would uninstall and reinstall to correct the settings, no big deal, or so I thought.

When windows started back up and gave me the security alert prompt (Control Panel > Windows Security Center) and I figured no big deal. However it was saying “Comodo is not installed bla bla bla.” When I enabled XP Professional’s firewall, window’s message said, “Comodo was working, etc.”

Windows Firewall worked within normal parameters as far as I could tell otherwise. I will try to recreate issue buy uninstalling and will post detailed results later with screen shots.

Sunday/December 9th 2007: I tried recreating the incident and my results confuse me. Windows XP Professional Security Center Says “Comodo Firewall not on bla, bla, bla.” However, when I turn on XP’s firewall it says “Windows Firewall is on bla, bla, bla. So why when I turn off windows firewall does it say that “Comodo” not windows firewall is disabled?

How would I correct this?

Thank you.

Hi. I thought the following would be very simple but these days we know nothing is simple.

What I'm trying to do is block all incoming/outgoing traffic from my machine using Windows Firewall with Advanced settings, but allow only specific sites over http/https.

On the Windows firewall rules, there is no setting for URL, so I put in the IP for Yahoo for example, but I couldn't access Yahoo after I activated the rule. Plus, using IP's wont help when Yahoo can change its IP anytime. It's the URL is what I want, so I can do wild-card URL rules like www.yahoo.com/finance/*.

I tried tools like Kaspersky, but that only works for website traffic, nothing is stopping exotic things like newsgroup traffic from a news reader app for example.

Could someone please tell me how to block everything except specific URLs. Looking forward to your response, I'm stuck here.

This time the windows security center was whingein that it wasnt protected by windows firewall so have told it I will manage my own firewall....my main query is
1, why did it ask this time & not before? ie: ran alongside sygate happily
2, what caused it to stop runnin on startup?
& just as an added extra...why is Avast still runnin yet no icon showing & to my knowledge has not updated automatically??
Should I be lookjin for nasties or is this all just a configuration problem?

About two hours ago, my computer lost internet connection and was searching for network address. This happens a lot, and so far I thought it is normal. But when I right-clicked the icon for "repair", restarted the connection search. But instead of simply reconnecting I noticed a Windows Security Alert popup that said my firewall was disabled. Also my computer went very slow at the time, but is now normal speed and connected. But the popup quickly disappeared as soon as it was shown. I immediatly checked the settings, but it showed firewall was still on. I still have popup saying I turned off automatic updates (I did do this), but it is no longer saying my firewall is off. What could have cause this weird thing to happen? Since then there has been no sign or sympton of infection.
