Help Getting Missing File Messages (vista)

Q: Help Getting Missing File Messages (vista)

When I login to the pc I get 4 missing file messages..ssqon.dllnefcoskb.dlltuvutrs.dlljkkig.dllAlso.. half of the programs in this log do not exist on my machine because they have been uninstalled. I have ran several virus scans and spyware plus rootkit with nothing else being found. I did find some viruses before and I manually deleted these missing files. Since I deleted the files, the popups have ceased however I now experience the login error messages. I have also ran scandsk and chkdsk both and again the anti-virus programs in safe mode all to no avail.. plus ran several online scans.. a few online scans would not work. Thanks for all and any help.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 14:30:49, on 14/12/2007Platform: Windows Vista (WinNT 6.00.1904)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16546)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\Windows\system32\taskeng.exeC:\Windows\system32\Dwm.exeC:\Windows\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\OrangeHSS\Systray\SystrayApp.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jusched.exeC:\Windows\sttray.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\SharedCOM\RoxWatchTray9.exeC:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exeC:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exeC:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager\IAAnotif.exeC:\Windows\System32\atwtusb.exeC:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\France Telecom\Shared Modules\AlertModule\0\AlertModule.exeC:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exeC:\Windows\ehome\ehtray.exeC:\Program Files\DellSupport\DSAgnt.exeC:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmpnscfg.exeC:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\bin\sprtcmd.exeC:\Windows\ehome\ehmsas.exeC:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AcroRd32Info.exeC:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\SharedCOM\CPSHelpRunner.exeR0 - I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Not sure if I fixed the problems or not by checking these boxes in HiJackThis and selecting "fix".. but at least now they don't show as missing files when Vista is loaded. Is there anything I should do here? Thanks.

Hi,

Every time I restart my computer, I get the error message "PRISMCFG.EXE - Entry Point Not Found." This has been coming up for a long time.

From what I gather, this is related to my modem in some way. I have Orange Broadband, though when I got it, it was called Freeserve (I think).

Is there anyone that could lend a hand? It's only an error message and so isn't that pressing, but any help you could give would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome to TSG....
To download HJTsetup.exe from SpyKiller To Download HijackThis go to the following at the File Repository
Click on the button for Download to the right of HijackThis Self Installer:

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item5

Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply. DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
A security expert with a gold shield to the right of their name should take a look at your log - please be patient.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. I've spent many frustrating hours trying to figure this out.

I have a Dell Inspiron M5030, Windows 7, 64-bit OS. Three days ago my computer blue screened but I couldn't catch the error message before it shut down. It seemed to work fine after that so I'm not sure if it's connected to the current issue. Two days ago I started getting error messages when using Yahoo and AOL instant messengers - "CLayoutHostWnd-Tooltip: YahooMessenger.exe - System Error    The program can't start because api-ms-win-downlevel-shell32-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." I did try to uninstall Yahoo but got the message "An error occured when trying to remove Yahoo Messenger. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove Yahoo Messenger from the Programs and Features list?" I clicked Yes but it wasn't removed and the same thing happens when I try to uninstall any program. I get a different error message when trying to run my webcam - "The program can't start because AVICAP32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." After a while, I couldn't hear the sound in videos online and the videos restart themselves and now music files won't play with Windows Media Player and I get the message "Server execution failed."

Hello!

I think my husbands computer has a virus.   It is running windows 7.

It is so slow it is pretty much unusable.  He tried to update iTunes and received a message saying a file was missing (he didn't write down what it was).  It doesn't look like his windows updates are working.  He is now finding emails sent to all his outlook contacts going out that he didn't write with questionable links in them.

The virus protection he uses is ESet.  We tried to run malwarebytes but it is going so slow we stopped it.  It had been running for about 26 hours and didn't appear to be moving anymore at all.

Can the programs that someone will hopefully tell us to run to find the problem be run in safe mode?  Do you have to be connected to the internet to run them?  It seems to run a bit faster when not connected to the internet.

Hopefully someone can help us.

Thanks!

Lonni

Hi there,

Have you ever heard of Ubuntu? It's a Linux operating system. You can download a Live CD of this (basically means you don't have to install it to your computer, the OS is based on the CD) and recover your files from your hard drive in that way.

You will need to burn the .iso file of Ubuntu using ImgBurn so that the CD will be bootable.

After that, I would recommend formatting.

Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Hello folks.  I'm hoping someone can help me out of this dilemma.  Recently I was trying to create a backup of my hard drive which is running Windows Vista Ultimate on an AMD duo pentium.  I installed the software Macruim Reflect to do this.  However part way through the backup the software ran into an error and got stuck.  I shut down the computer and when I came back I was unable to boot back into the system.  I kept getting an error message from windows telling me that pssnap.sys was missing or corrupt.  I cannot boot into safe mode either.  I attempted to have Windows Vista do a repair but it failed unfortunately. I tried the Windows Vista automated startup repair application but it failed.  I also tried to go through the command prompt and use bootrec but that did nothing either.  I tried to find a copy of pssnap.sys online but no source for this file exist.  I even tried finding help through Macrium's web page but help is only available to registered (paid) users.  I took the drive out and ran different tests on it on another computer but all tests show the drive is fine and free of viruses.  I can also access all the drive material saved on it this way.  I just can't get the system to boot due to that corrupted file.  I really do not want to reinstall everything all over again, so I am hoping someone can help me out with this.  Thanks in advance!

A:Cannot boot into Vista due to missing SYS file

Hello, and Welcome

Tap F8 at boot and select Last Known good configuration. pssnap.sys is a Macrium driver.

What is the make and model of the computer? For HP you can get to System Restore by tapping F11 at startup and selecting advanced options. Pick a date before the problem started.

Does F8 give the option to repair computer in Vista? Go throught the steps and select System Restore. I can't remember if Vista gives you the option to do a System Restore using F8 at boot like Windows 7 does.

Hi Folks,

I have a Dell Vostro running Windows Vista Ultimate. Recently the file and folder names disappeared . The only thing left in any folder is the icons. I also noticed that the 'search' facility now states that' it failed to initialize' and the system icon under control panel is not working. Apart from that the PC runs fine. I first suspected a virus or malware so i have ran Malwarebytes, Avast antivirus and Superantispyware.. Only the later picked up a few items which i removed to no avail. I have also ran a 'repair' from the Vista Disk. I have tried all combinations of holding shift, alt ..etc while toggling through the view settings and selecting different folders. I have tried customising folders and changing templates. I have tried removing the 'Hide filenames' option where I could find it. I have ran combofix just in case the registry was corrupted.

None of the above has made the slightest difference. Actually when I toggle the 'hide Filenames' option on and off I can see the icons move as if to make space for the folder/file names. This lead me to believe that perhaps the file names where there but perhaps in a colour like 'transparent' crazy as this seems . Needless to say that lead me no where. Couldn't find any option for text colour on files/folders

If anyone has experience this then please help as i have no other option than to now reformat the system and re-install Windows. This is really a last resor... Read more

The file is a trojan, which means you PC is (or was) infected.

Any removal has not been done fully by the sound of it.

I would suggest posting a HiJackThis log in the Security section of the forum, full instructions on downloading, running and posting the log will be available there.

Hi all. First time poster, and would be very grateful for your expertise. I have a Dell XPS 430 running Vista 32-bit. Recently, if the system was left inactive for a period of time it was randomly freezing or crashing out altogether, requiring a reboot and disk check. After nipping away leaving it on for about half an hour this evening, I come back to find it has tried to reboot, presumably after a crash, and is failing to do so with the following error message:

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1. insert your windows installation disk and restart your computer. 2. choose your language settings, and then click 'next'. 3. Click repair your computer. If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

The first thing I did was search for this driver in google to see what it related to. Unusually, I couldn't find any reference to it, which makes me suspicious. Next, I tried starting the system in safe mode but it wouldn't boot into that either, giving the same error message. I dug out the Dell supplied operating system reinstallation dvd, booted into this and ran the Vista repair tool. It told me it had identified a startup problem and was attempting to fix this, but after seve... Read more

Hi,

On my laptop I have an SD card slot. Whenever an SD card is in, a removable storage device shows up in "Computer" in Explorer. When I open up "Computer" through the start menu, the icon for the drive as expected (the standard SD card icon), but if I navigate to "Computer" in a File Open dialog (e.g. in Firefox, File->Open File...), the icon is missing. The drive is there, but the icon is one of those generic missing-icon icons. I've attached a screen shot.

This is a relatively new build (Vista Business x64), and I've noticed it from day one.

Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

A:Vista SD Card Icon in File Open Dialog Missing

Any thoughts on this?

I've deleted my icon cache, and there was no change.

I've also tried to change the icon for a drive using the registry, as explained in a few tutorials and posts on this site, and that hasn't worked either. In fact, I can't even change the icon that appears in "My Computer" for the SD Card drive, let alone in the File Open Dialog.

For completeness, attached is the proper icon being displayed in My Computer.

Last Sunday I ran into a horrid problem with my Asus c90S machine and Vista.

I am unable to boot windows due to a corrupt or missing registry. I've tried repairing from Install disk and also using the restore point fix. Neither of those are able to fix my problem. I've used chcdsk /f and many other command prompt commands to try and fix the problem myself, but I'm at a loss.

here is the direct file that I think is causing the problem:

\windows\system32\config\system

Status: 0xc000000f

I would love to be able to save a few of my files. Can I transfer my files from my HD to an external USB HD? If I attempt to reinstall vista from start, would I lose all of my files?

And finally, does anyone have an suggestions as to the problem and/or fixes?

I'm running a Hiatchi (sp?) harddrive. I apologize for any missing information.

Thanks,

troyst83

A:Vista Boot Problem - Registry File Missing or Corrupt

Yes, you probably can transfer your data to another media.

I recommend buying an external hard drive enclosure. It's very similar to an external hard drive, but you are able to put a normal hard drive inside it and read it like a USB drive. They're very cheap, from what I've seen.

If you attempt to reinstall Vista, you will lose all your files.

Hello,

Thanks for your post!

Based on my research, Windows Vista no longer ships msinet.ocx (Microsoft Internet Transfer Control). applications which need this file should be upgraded to work with Windows Vista.

For more information, please refer to:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vbrun/ms788708.aspx

I performed further investigation and found the following one:

http://jayed.us/2007/08/14/fixing-msinetocx-problem-on-vista/

Note: this method is provided by 3rd party website, I just list it for your reference, please try it at your own risk. I highly recommend you to fully backup your registry before trying this workaround, in case of potential risks.
If the problem still persists after applying the solution, please let me know the name of the application and the URL you download it. Thanks!

Hope it helps! Happy New Year!

Actions taken so far:

None of these programs found anything aside from a few cookies.

Hi I have a weird problem.

I'm using vista 64 bit and the thumbnail icons used in the "open file" diagoloue boxes for programs such as word and firefox are missing. It shows up as the unknown file icon. I have tried to rebuild the vista icon cache and that didn't work. All the other icons, the ones on the desktop are fine.

When I try to go into properties to change the icons, it shows the pictures, but doesn't actually change. Also, the little shortcut arrow displays as an unknown file icon. So I have normal icons with a "unknown file" icon in the lower right corner where the shortcut arrow should be.

Can anyone help?

Hello and welcome to the forum, do you know how long this has been going on and have you tried to do a system restore. If you know when you first noticed this you can go back at least 5 days before and do a restore.

I would also run a full AV scan.
Plus download malwarebytes and run a full scan, this way you can rule out any thing such as a virus or malware. Virus's can start small as I am sure you are well aware of.

Because some of the files were corrupt/didn't finish being compacted while others did.

The only way to get it back right now is data recovery software, and it's probably already too late for that considering how you've already used your computer after the incident.

When I turned my computer on this morning, Outlook Express locked up and had to be shut down. Upon restarting the program, I noticed that about a month's worth of mail was missing (from Oct 12 to Nov 15).

I've spent all day trying to find a solution. I've identified the location of the OE Files and tried copying the files from my inbox to another folder and then importing them. This resulted in duplicates of the files that were there when I started, but the missing messages were still missing.

I also tried renaming the old inbox, creating a new inbox, and copying the data from the old to the new and then using the new one. Interestingly, although I attempted to copy everything from the old to the new, the file size of the new one is much smaller. But my missing emails are still missing.

If anyone can recommend an inexpensive solution to this problem, I would appreciate it. We're a nonprofit animal rescue and the emails I lost included all of the applications on a litter of puppies I'm fostering, so I'm very anxious to recover them.

Thank you!

I have a problem with Internet Explorer, recently pop up messages have vanished, the type that pop up when you hover the mouse over messages on forums.

It works with firefox so I guess itís down to an Internet Explorer problem?

Any ideas please?

I have a strange problem. I have been using Auto Archive for several years, with no issues. Until now. I performed a search in my Sent Items for messages I sent to someone (I'll say Dave). My search yielded 0 results, even though I know I have sent several messages to Dave over the last couple of years. I noticed my entire Sent Items shows only 326 messages (it should be several thousand). I opened a message Dave sent me in April of 2013, to which I had sent a reply. I selected to Find Related Messages, and the received message as well as my reply were displayed. My reply was also sent in April of 2013, and Outlook showed that it is located in the Sent folder. I once again went into my Sent items, and it still only shows 236 messages, the oldest of which is April of 2014. Why would Outlook not display messages prior to that date? Is there a way to have all messages displayed? I really need all the messages I have sent (not just those to Dave), for legal purposes. Can someone help please?

I am using Windows 7 and Outlook 2010, connected to an Exchange Server. Thanks.

A:Windows 7 64bit unable to file missing file in Hijackthis log file

It's doubtful those files are missing. More likely a bug still present in HijackThis where it cannot correctly enumerate some entries, so it gives a (file missing).

I would not put any faith in online analyzers such as that one. Much better to use these online databases

www.systemlookup.com
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/filedb/

There's nothing wrong with any of those entries. Please leave them alone.

Analysis logs are only to be posted in this section of the forum, not General Security. I've moved it here.

I see no sign of infection in those logs. If you think the machine is infected...

Last week my wife opened an email and her computer started acting strange so she did a hard shut down. After rebooting she could not access the internet, open Juno, or any other programs. After reinstalling her network card driver, I was able to connect to the internet, and her Juno ver.6 program would open, but her inbox, sent messages, and address book entries were missing. I ran Symantec anti-virus software and discovered that her computer was infected with Trojan Horse and Trogan.ByteVerify. I quarantined the infected files. I also had to reinstall her HP printer driver.
Everything is working okay now, but I would like to fix the email message problem. Upon further investigation, I found that all of her email messages, and address book were scattered throughout the IE5 temporary internet files.
Is there anyway to restore these email messages I found in the temprary internet folder(both in and sent) back to her Juno mailbox.bdb file?

Thanks,

Dave

My messages are listed in the Inbox/Outbox/Sent boxes, but, when you click on the message, the message contents do not appear, nor do they appear in preview pane.

I was deleting files from my drive, but don't recollect deleting any .dbx files. In fact, I can find .dbx files for the inbox, outbox, sent box etc which all show that they have contents. Can one open these .dbx files to see the contents?

What could I have done to have lost the message contents? Is there any way to restore the message contents.

I have a user that is missing text from incoming messages. The more the mails are replied to the more text disappears or distorts. It's from several different locations. The emails seem to be coming in HTML. They often get this string of code at the beginning of the
message:

v\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} o\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);}
w\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} .shape {behavior:url(#default#VML);}

In the body of the message text that was typed normally will appear in a different colour, a different font, or not at all.

It doesn't matter what format -- Plain Text, Rich Text or HTML. I've copied over a .dll from a computer without issues (can't remember the .dll, read it in the groups) and we have AV software but it isn't picking anything up.

Any ideas? This is the second user this is happening with and it's happening more and more consistently.

The user has Win XP Pro, Office XP, and we run Win NT 4 SP6 w/ Exchange 5.5
