Internet Explorer 7 Security Settings

Q: Internet Explorer 7 Security Settings

I have just upgraded from IE6 to IE7 on PC with XP and SP2.
Everything works fine, except I always get the message that my security settings are at risk!
When I click on "fix it for me", the settings are not stored.
When I try to set the security settings to the default settiings then click OK, again the settings
are not stored.
This is very irritating and will cause me to go back to IE6, which is a bit annoying when my laptop uses IE7.
Can anyone help me to store my security settings, it seems so easy when you read the Help info!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This coupled with Microsoft Edge's unpredictable website loading with frequent Network's internet connection disconnecting to the brink of unusability; nothing; even Microsoft Edge Reset won't resolve these scenarios.

Hi,A friend of mine is running Win XP and IE6.I have designed a web site for him which I have emailed to him for proof readings.Javascript has been used to disguise email addresses and an excel spread sheet is included as a download from a link. When trying to run the draft website from his machine in IE6 the script doesn't run but there is no security bar at the top of the browser window where you would normally expect to "click" to be able to select the option to allow it to. In his "Internet" and "Intranet" security settings "Active Scripting" is enabled. When he clicks on the link to download the excel file he gets a message which says something to the effect that "Security Settings will not allow download of this file".However, for a similar web site which I have designed and is published, which uses javascript for the menus, the menus appear as intended so clearly the script is executing. Further, on this site a word doc downloads with no problem.I have to confess I am stumped. Anyone have any ideas?ThanksDerek

I've been having a problem for a while that has been quite annoying to me. I think it relates to XP service pack 2, but I'm not sure:

In Internet Explorer, under Tools>Internet Options>Security, there are two problems.
The first is that the security settings slider for internet refuses to change to anything below medium. It gives the error:
"The Recommended security level for this zone is 'Medium'. The level you have chosen is lower than this. Please choose a security level of of 'Medium' or higher."
This sounds like a security pack issue, as I noticed the problem right after installing it. But it still bothers me to not have the ability to override the default.

The second problem on the same window is the lack of a "Custom Level" button. The button is there, but grey and unclickable. This is relatively recent and corrosponds to my recent virus infection which I just got rid of.
This problem is much more aggrovating as it doesn't seem to be any type of spyware or virus, and it restricts browsing in many ways.

I have run McAfee and found no current viruses/worms/trojans. I also have run both of the latest editions/updates of SpyBot and Adaware.

Somehow these problems seem easy to fix, but, of course, I've been unable to find any solution. Any help would definitely be appreciated.

I've been having problems off and on with my internet security lately. I can't download anything unless I set it lower than the default which isn't recommended by IE.

Anyway I decided to download Firefox today and I'm able to download but this one particular site won't let me upload anything because of my security settings:

I downloaded Firefox thinking it would solve this problem but it didn't. I turned off TrendMicro but nothing seems to work. At one point it would work in IE but I had to go another User Account. I don't plan on using IE so if anyone can assist me on how it can be fixed within Firefox I'd appreciate it.

I am trying to package a custom installation for Internet Explorer 10 using IEAK.  I am having some trouble with the Import Security Settings portion of the tool.
It is failing to import the security settings.  It says it has imported them, but upon installation the security settings have not been included in the IE 10 installation.
Looking at the "INS" folder that is built and the custsec.inf file create there, I can see that only two security settings have been captured -- "1401" and "2500" and none of the other 50 or so security settings are collected
for any zone.
In addition, I have trusted sites set to not require HTTPS, but that selection is not captured into the custom IEAK generated browser installer.
Does anyone have any tips on how to successfully deploy a customized version of IE 10?  I am even more reliant now on IEAK since IEM mode was removed from Group Policy, so I reall need to figure out why it doesn't function correctly.

A:Internet Explorer 10 IEAK capturing Security Settings

When ActiveSetup is run on a 64bit OS, first all the 32bit ActiveSetup keys are run first, and the 64bit ActiveSetup keys are run second.

The problem is that IEAK is adding the CUSTOM ActiveSetup to the 32bit key, and the ie4uinit.exe is added to the 64bit key.  While the IEAK has an ">" listed in the GUID (to signal for it to run last) it runs "last" in the 32bit
ActiveSetup commands.  The 64bit ones (which the ie4uinit.exe is part of) all run after the 32bit stuff....
So it appears that IEAK is not designed to build an IE 10 installation that will run correctly on 64bit OSes.  The IEAK CUSTOM settings will always apply prior to the ie4uinit running.  I suppose this can be changed by further manipulating the
registry after IEAK customized IE 10 is installed and making sure the >{GUID} entry is moved to the 64bit registry.
I suppose another way to look at it is ie4uinit is not correctly noticing that that the user settings are already present in the user's registry and is wallpapering over them with the incorrect settings.  Either way, the end result is that the incorrect
settings are being configured for the user on first logon.

I find it difficult to believe that Microsoft IE team has messed this up and that no one has discovered it before.  (I'm not being sarcastic) That makes me question what I am doing that is incorrect because I can't  believe that a problem like
that would exist in a ... Read more

I hope someone can help me work this out, it's driving me crazy!
I'll try to explain it in as few words as possible!
There is a website we need to access on which we're having trouble getting some of the buttons to display.  In short it works when the internet zone is set to "Medium" but not when it's "Medium-High" (I have added it to trusted sites
but in properties it shows as "Unknown Zone (Mixed)" so seems to use the "Internet Zone" settings.)
I am trying to track down which security setting is causing the issue.  To do this my plan was to make a note of all the settings that differ between Medium and Medium-High.  However if I set it to medium-high and manually change all the settings
to be identical to medium it still doesn't work... yet if I use the "Reset to: Medium" option at the bottom it does work!  This doesn't make any sense to me.
Are there other hidden stetting affected by the "Reset to" option that I can't change manually.
Any help would really be appreciated!  Thanks!

Hi, I have been having some disturbing problems with my computer recently. After running a Spy Sweeper virus scan, I discovered a Trojan/Zlob virus which I thought I took care of by removing. Now, I am having troubles with my Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers, as they will randomly decide to not load anything at all or only after hitting refresh at least 20 times. Typing in a URL takes ages and 3 times so farnone of my browsers were working and when i closed the browser window my computer immediately bluescreened and crashed. When I start Windows back up and report the error, I get a report saying it is caused by an unknown driver. I looked into my Add/Remove list and found Internet Explorer Security plugin 2006 and Internet Security Addon, whihc I thought were suspicious. I googled them and found that they were indeed malware caused by the Trojan/Zlob and I read that removing is in the Add/Remove list would not solve the problem. Welcome to the BleepingComputer forum. We are currently studying your log and will have instructions for you shortly. Thank you for your patience.HijackThis is an analysis AND a repair tool. When you fix something in HijackThis, you are deleting a bad entry in the Windows Registry. In case of a mistake being made, there is a reversal for line entry deletions. HijackThis creates a new file which is a backup log of changes and you can reverse the line entry deletion. BUT...HijackThis needs a safe folder to keep these critical backup logs and a temp folder is definitely not safe as you might run Disk Cleanup and delete them. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e). Double click on C: If the folder is hidden, click on show the contents of this folder. Right-click on a blank space in the right column and select New > Folder Name it HJT (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe Move HijackThis.exe into this folder. Hello,

I am trying to figure out a way to have different settings (firewall filtering mode mostly) on different Windows 10 accounts. For example I have my main admin account where I've setup Eset on interactive mode so I can control inflow/outflow of connections etc. But I have also created a guest/visitor account with limited access for other users on my personal PC which I wish to set the filtering mode into automatic so they won't accidentally allow access to an unknown connection and end up messing my PC. How can I do that? I tried to use the profiles tab under firewall but it doesn't automatically change when I change accounts. Is there a way to do this?

Hi,
It sounds like you want to disable ActiveX content (flash) or you have an errant COM browser Addon.
or you have a long list of domains in your Trusted Sites zone.
Changing the default IE security zone settings is not recommended.
Legacy anti-spyware like Spybot S&d or the MVP hosts lists are no longer required and long Trusted Sites lists are known to slow performance.
SmartScreen Filter or your AV product include listings of known 'bad' domains.
You can find the latest listing here -
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182569
tools>activeX filtering to toggle site ActiveX filtering.
Internet Options>Advanced tab, uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions" (Close and restart IE for the full changes to take affect) to disable COM Toolbars and BHO's.
Check for updates to your AV program and run a scan to identify any malware that you may have installed.

Hi,

I can't seem to modify the security settings for IE. Specifically I am trying to log in to my Yahoo e-mail account and I get a message saying "The browser you're using refuses to sign in (cookies rejected)". The privacy report says that, indeed, several versions of the yahoo web-site have cookies blocked even though right clicking on the sites clearly shows that "Always Accept cookies from this site" is selected. I can see nothing wrong with the cookie settings and have cleared caches, temp files etc as suggested by many other solutions out there. Internet search suggests that there should be a P3P entry in the registry but I can't see it anywhere. Where would these records be? I've run Ad-Aware and SpyBot with no improvement.

The PC is running Ranger, a schools based OS but I've removed it with no difference.

XP Windows Pro SP2, IE 6.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

I don't know the answer to your specific problem but I'd be very wary of adding Games Sites to your Trusted Zone - that's really leaving yourself open to attack from any malware running around on those sites (and there will be plenty). As a whole, IE is a fairly secure environment. If wanted you can go into the security tab and set your internet setting to High instead of medium. The best thing to do is to ensure you have all your windows updates completed and ensure you have some type of Antivirus/Antispyware scanners to find anything that may be lurking on your computer already. Below is a list of my most used Antispyware programs. YOu can only have one Antivirus but you can have as many antispyware programs as your heart desires and you can never have to many.

Is there any way, i can save the setting of Internet Explorer? My PC has been set up for NTL Home Broadband! The installation disc wouldn’t run on my system, so I had to call them up and set it up over the phone! With them setting up IE with me assessing various pages on the NTL site, for my IE to recognize the broadband!! What I really want to do it maybe reinstall windows from scratch… deleted everything, clean the registry etc!!!! but id rather not have the £10 phone bill to call NTL again for them to set me up on broadband! So is there a way to save all these setting it a CDR or whatever, then put them setting on the newly formatted PC?

I am having problems with playing YOU TUBE videos. In my programs list under
the START menu there are 2 Internet Explorer programs ie Internet Explorer &
Internet Explorer (X64) . If I highlight the (x64) version and disable the POP UP
BLOCKER via the TOOLS button I can play a YOU TUBE video but only in the
one browsing session ie. as soon as I go back to open another session using
GOOGLE search YOU TUBE won't play.
Also I notice that I am getting a lot of frozen screens when browsing
with a message YOUR BROWSING SESSION HAS ENCOUNTERED PROBLEMS.
ARE these problems related? I was thinking of RESETTING INTERNET EXPLORER
but this sounds a bit dangerous.
ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE

Ice, welcome to Sevenforums!

Reseting it is a good idea. It will ask if you want to keep personal settings. After, go to get.adobe.com/flashplayer and download flashplayer to your desktop. Uninstall adobe flashplayer from contol panel in favor of installing this newer version. Check add-ons in internet explorer and make sure all the ones you want are there and none other. Having IEx64 and normal IE is standard on a x64 system, which you have. They are 2 versions of the same browser, but have about the same speed (for IE9). I'd use the normal one due to compatability reasons. Hope this helps

I cannot open any .exe due to "Internet security settings". I have looked around and for everyone else this seemed to be any easy fix by going to internet options and turning "Launching applications and unsafe files" from "Disable" to "Prompt". However for me it was already on "Prompt".

My suspicion is that this is a virus primarily because it won't let me open any .exe thus not allowing me to open programs like anti-virus software. I have also tried opening cmd and regedit to no success.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Scanning with Malwarebytes and Superantispyware would be a good start, if you could start anything, but given your situation, you'd either have to pull the drive out and slave it to another machine to scan and clean it, or maybe if you're lucky, it might work in Safe Mode.
Have you tried it yet? (Usually by tapping F8 at start up)

I'm running Windows 7 and use Microsoft Security Essentials for virus protection.  Two days ago, I rebooted my computer and noticed that the desktop background had changed to black, and the IE, Chrome, and WMP icons that were pinned to the taskbar had turned into blank document icons.  When I clicked on them, it said the target was not found.  I used the search box to find them and re-pin them to the taskbar, but internet access was very slow, and connections would sometimes time out.  I rebooted into safe mode, ran a full scan with MSE and it found and removed a few things; also ran Malwarebytes and it found and removed a few things.  Internet was still slow, however.  I ran Combofix, and this also found and removed a few things, and seemed to fix the slow internet problem in Chrome.  However, IE is still slow. Also, something keeps changing my internet security zone, under Internet Options, to Custom.  I change it to Default (Medium-High,) look back a few minutes later, and it's been changed back to Custom.  So, I think I'm still infected in some way.  Repeat full scans by MSE and Malwarebytes are not finding anything, however.  Where do I go from here?

For some reason, I am suddenly unable to access files on a DVD. I have a DVD I made, which is full of last year's photos. When I put it in my laptop drive and select the option to view files, it takes ages (green bar, crawling like snail, unwillingly across the top of the window where the path is listed) but eventually I see the top level folder, which is called Photos.

Double click on the Photos folder to look inside and there's another long wait (green bar spreading across again). When the green bar finally makes it across, I get the message:

These files can't be opened.
Your internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened.
E:\Photos.

What??? What has this got to do with internet settings. I'm not trying to access the internet. I'm just trying to look at my own photos on a DVD. The same DVD in another computer works absolutely fine.

A different DVD (also of my photos but created a couple of years back) works fine in my laptop. In other words, it's only one particular DVD and it only fails in this one computer.

Actually, while writing this I just spotted something. Looking at the top level listing I think my computer has decided that E:\Photos is a file, not a folder. Why? My ancient tower machine, running XP, makes no such mistake. Any suggestions?
Keith

I'm running Windows XP and trying to play some games from shockwave.com. But my computer won't connect with their server. They are telling me my internet security settings are too high to allow the server to connect. When I go into my control panel I click on the new setting, and reset, and ok. Then when I go back to check the setting it hasn't changed. Also they are telling me if I can't temporarily disable the firewall to open ports 80 & 22, don't have a clue how to do that. After that another box apeared asking if i wanted to go to the trouble shooting web site. I did when on the web site i selected an option to run an online scan on my computer to find any files or messenger components that may be interfearing with the messenger. When the scan was finished i was told that my Norton Internet Security programme may be the reason why i could not access my MSN Messenger. And I have tried everything I have thought of to try and change my settings so I can log into my MSN Messenger but nothing I have tried has worked.

Internet security settings keep changing and hangs up and PC is SLOWThe first indicator for trouble came to my intention when my 14 yr old announced youtube wouldn’t work. He likes and was using google chrome. I was using it as well but discontinued using it after too many “aw snaps this page has become unresponsive do you want to wait or kill” messages; which now that I think about it was probably the first indicator of a problem.Anyway after failing to get Google to work properly, I deleted Google chrome wanting to use IE8 exclusively.I launched IE 8 and rc’vd the warning message that security level settings put my “system at risk”. I reset the security levels to windows default settings only for them to be changed back to this mysterious ‘custom level’ settings at the next launching of IE8. In addition. IE hangs if you click anything other than a link such as start a new tab, attempt to download or enter new search in the Google search window. Subsequent of link selections, or multiple uses of the back or forward buttons will also hang it up. IE hangs up indefinitely giving no choice but to shut it down and re-launch. On occasion IE pages are missing inf rmation like pics or are misaligned. Too often the tab drops and has to be recovered.I launched task manager and found unfamiliar lsr.exe, lsq.exe and lsp.exe running . I ended those tasks only to have them returned after rebooting. I have ran Malwarebytes, AVAST Antivir... Read more

Whenever I made any changes in Local Interenet Security settings e.g if I change the status of "Download signed ActiveX controls" from "prompt" to "enable" and save it. Upon re-openning the IE the settings are reverted back to prompt. I already did the On-line Scan by Eset, but it find nothing malicious.

Kindly note that I'm using Windows XP Pro SP3 with IE6. And I can't upgrade IE 6 to 7 or 8 versions because I am using the software that requires IE6 to access the machine for configuration and installation.

I already tried to reset the IE settings but the problem remains.

A:Reset Internet Explorer Settings

Resetting Internet Explorer will wipe history, temporary internet files, web form info, cookies and passwords. Resetting won't harm your computer, but because cookies and saved passwords are deleted, all you have to do is re-enter them when you go to ebay and other places that require one. If you use IE7, you'll also have to go through the "choose your options" or whatever it's called. And you will have to reset your homepage. And your restricted sites will also be deleted. If all you want to do is delete the restricted sites, you can do open Internet Options/Security tab.Click the red circle with a line through it, then sites. You can delete them individually, but with 300 sites there, this would take a lot of time to do. I personally don't think having that many restricted sites is slowing down your computer. When was the last time you deleted the cache? It's deleting cookies that wipes out your stored passwords. History, temp internet files, cookies can build up-causing a slowdown. It's a good idea to regularly delete them. As long as you know all your passwords, enter them back in when required. Also, what about defragging? That might help with the speed issue.Read Slow Computer?, Use this troubleshooting checklist for more info on things you can do to speed up your computer. One overlooked file that needs a regular cleaning is the Temp file. (not the same as temporary internet files). TEMP FILES. There are 2 files containing temps.
