Dell Power Supply To A Benchtop Power Supply

Q: Dell Power Supply To A Benchtop Power Supply

I have a DellHP-145SNF Power supply.
These wire's are coming from the Voltage regulator/control PCB inside the P/S.
There are 6 wires involved.
Here are 3 questions that I have,
1 - What is the Orange - "Power Good" looking for?
2 - What is the Brown wire for.
3 - What is the Purple - "+5VSB (Standby)" used for.

The Gray is Power ON when hooked to ground.
Black goes to ground.
Blue/White goes to -12V.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Dell 8600 about two years old. When I plug in the AC adapter, it intermittently fades to the battery as though the plug was pulled out (its not) and of course the screen fades in an out when every time it swithces--it does it every 30 to 60 seconds or so. I switched to a different AC adapter (I have a Dell 600M with the same AC adapter)-same thing so I know it is something internally. Any ideas?

I have just bought a Dell 19.5 V 90 W power supply adapter for a Dell from ebay. The PSU turned up this morning without a power cord. That's annoying enough but when I looked the connector needed is a type I have never seen before. The centre pin is slightly longer and wider than the other two so I assume that is the Earth pin. The centre pin is also offset between the other two. Again I suppose for connecting only 1 way. The two outer pins have a distance of just under 2 cms between them. Please can anyone tell me what type of connector this is. If I can get some info on it then I may be able to get one.

Thank you Terence

I have 2 failed Z800 power supplies (1150 watt version). After some internet research I am led to believe this is a common problem and related to the PS capacitors. Since I do not know how to do this capacitor replacement (yet). I thought I would buy a new PS. However, I do not want to buy a Z800 PS since it seems to me to be a defective design. Can anyone chime in and tell me if the new z840 1125 watt PS will work with my older z800? I have called HP support and spoken with the correct support people on this and they were not able to confirm if the Z840 PS will work (fit) on the z800. The closest confirmantion I recieved was that if it fits then it should work. Instructions to fix the capacitors:http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/Z800-power-on-issue... Same issue I am facing:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f563JGeoxaw On a side note, can anyone recommend a good service tech to make such capacitor repares in Southern California or insrtuctions on how to make this repair (with pictures). Thanks

I have a W540, which currently uses a 170W power supply (20V 8.5A) I also just recieved a docking station for a P50 which has a 230W power supply showing 20V 11.5A. The connectors look the same, but I'm hesitant to try the 230W power supply in the W540. Should this be ok to use the 230W power supply with the W540?

A:Power Supply Question - Can I use the 230W power supply with a W540?

230 watts is the maximum power supply, it only supplies the power needed by the computer. I sold my W540, so i can't test this for you. But i do the use the ThinkPad X1 Carbon with the 230 watts power adapter without any problem.

Hi all,

I am needing to replace the power supply on a Dell XPS Gen 5. On a normal computer this would not be a problem but with the GEN 5 the power supply is in its own casing at the bottom of the tower unit.

Does anybody know how to remove it from the tower unit? I have had a look and can not see how it is ment to detatch. All advice will be great.

Thanks

Dell makes it a little harder to replace the psu because of some of the plugs used and the size.
You really need to get a replacement from Dell, I have heard it is possible to get a compatible one online but have never searched

i have a dell precision m70 which i lost my admin password for, have since done the paperclip method to now i have a strange problem where the laptop doesnt recognize the battery or charger have i done something wrong or are both items in need of replacement.

A:Dell power supply

the laptop doesnt recognize the battery or chargerClick to expand...

Let's discuss those two separately

Charger
I assume you mean AC adapter and I assume you mean you turn on the laptop and it behaves as tho the adapter isn't connected (i.e. that round plug IS, in fact, inserted in laptop and you see the green LED on the adapter itself so you know it should be getting power

You might want to connect the adapter in another computer to be 100% certain but
Is most likely the problem is the connection between the adapter plug and Dell's motherboard is broken (inside your computer). This occurs often. This is something actually soldered onto the mother boards (at least for the Dell laptops i;ve seen) so it's not as simple as replacing a part. Generally, i've seen shops charge flat rate about $150 to do the soldering and fix problem for you

Battery

May have gone dead as you didn't realize AC power was gone and the laptop was draining the battery
Actually is really dead and needs be replaced
Try using it in someone else's computer to see if it can be recharged

I have decided that a new power supply is in order since I will be updating my video card soon. (I've already added ram so now have 1024MB) I have a Dell Dimension 4400 and the power supply that it came with is 250w but more importantly, has no on/off switch on the back. Most of the PS I see DO have that switch, but SPARKLE's FSP550-60PLG EPS12V 550W Power Supply 90~265V AC, Full Range Input UL 1950, CSA C22.2 Level 3, TUV EN60950, NEMKO EN60950 (CB Report),CE - OEM doesn't and it looks like a good fit for my case.

But I know that looks can be deceiving, and I know so little about computers that I'm prone to be dangerous!

I bought the Dell in 2002, so I think I'm good as far as not having to use an ATX adaptor (read about that during my search).

Will this fit in all other ways? How can I tell that? And is this something a complete novice can do? Looks like an awful lot of wires....

This is where I plan to buy it if it fits (unless you have another place to suggest) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103478

Thanks for the help!

the power supply should have 2 cables, the 20pin(or 24pin) and another cable with 4pin, both of those go in differnet spots,

and from what i know it shouldnt be a problem with the 20pin going in the 24pin.

Hi,
My 2009 Dell XPS does not start.  The back on/off switch light lights up(red).  Front power button dos not turn on the fan.  I am guessing possibly power supply but don't understand why light for the on/off switch turns on.  The only PSU I could find locally was a Thermaltake TR2 W0070 at Frys which looks like    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153023
The Thermaltake has lots of colored wires.  Main Power Connector (24 pin); ATX 12V (4+4Pin); PCI-E(6 pin), SATA (5pin), Peripheral(4Pin), FDD(4Pin).  They are not labelled.  Counting the pins does not help, e.g. can't find a 5 pin plug, don't know which is FDD, etc or if any are not needed.
The Dell power replacement manual http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_studio_xps_desktop/studio-xps-435_service%20manual_en-us.pdf

matching old PSU wires to new PSU wires.  What to do with extra wires from the new power supply (if any).

A:Dell XPS 435 MT Power Supply Problem.

The linked power supply is a standard "ATX" power supply.  The best option is a "modular" power supply and with that only the cables/connectors needed are hooked up to the power supply.  Avoids all the extra non-used cables, trying to stuff them inside the case and potentially causing some air flow problems.
Here is an example of a fully modular power supply:

I dont mean give Dell a bad reputation but I've had a really difficult time with them.
I purchased an Inspiron 531 and a 8400gs video at the same time form the same sales rep. Little did I know that the 8400gs was not going to work with my 531's power supply. I'm assuming the sales rep made a mistake because he said that the card would work on the system. I emailed dell tech support about the issue and they said that the card would probably or probably not work on my system........whatever the heck that means. I dont want to take any chances. Plus, if im pushing the power supply wouldn't that damage my system? But, anyway,
So, life goes on....
Im looking for a power supply that is at least 350watts with 20amps on the +12volt rail that will fit the Inspiron 531.

Any suggestions?

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone on this board could be of help to me in locating a power supply for my Dell WebPC. Seems Dell is unable to help me get a replacement for it or even suggest other options so I may find it on my own. Since they make their own parts it seems pretty sorry to me that they can't manage a simple PS for one of their own units. They actually suggested I go to EBay to locate one. Too bad Dell, EBay didn't sell me the computer, you did...you are the only ones who support your puters for parts.
Anyway if someone is parting one out or knows of a source for a power supply please let me know. Thanks for any help given.

Welcome to TechSpot

That is a bit of an "oldie" which died out in 2000 sometime. Check the dimensions of the powersupply.
If it is a small size, check this out:
http://www.directron.com/ap320w.html

Dell very often use standard powersupplies, but use a different wiring in the connectors. If you are a bit of a DIY, you should be able to re-wire the connector of a standard PSU into Dell's screwed-up wiring, by pulling the individual wires out and reinserting them as per Dell's old PSU-connector.
Good luck

Today when I wanted to start my Dell Dimension 9200, it didn't. All that happenend was that an orange light kept blinking on the front.

OCZ power supplies are good quality, and cheap.
But there is a slight possibility that you will need a special-made power supply for your Dell. Though, I googled a bit, and saw a power supply that was said to be "made" for your Dell, it was actually physically the size of a normal ATX power supply, and had all the same connections (at least if it doesn't have a custom 24-pin mobo connector) as a normal ATX PSU.

A few days ago my Dell Dimension 4400 would not always boot when I push the power button. If it boots, it's perfect after that. I changed the power cord and the outlet I use for power - no help. When it won't boot, the little light on the power button (on the front of the PC) is on, but no sounds come from inside the case, no fan, no flickers to the monitor. Nothing. If I then hold in the switch for a few seconds the light goes off. Last night I pushed the power on button and the light came on but nothing else happened. I walked away and came back several minutes later - still nothing. So I pushed the button again expecting the light to go off - but instead the PC booted up and is running normally. Bad power supply? Dell started using a properietary powersupply for their systems a few years ago. Even though a standard ATX powersupply will fit, it will destroy the motherboard. The best bet is to find a compatible powersupply but not necessarily from Dell. Dell spares are pricey. Try StarTech.com they may have one.

I replaced a busted power supply in my old XPS 420 (with a MasterCool MasterLite 600). Everything has seemingly gone wonderfully. However, during the replacement I had to remove the heat sink from the CPU to get to the cables. I've never really installed heat sinks before so I got some thermal paste a put a dot tried to put the heat sink back on and it didn't fall into place. When I removed the heat sink I noticed the paste hadn't covered all the CPU so I added a bit more to make sure. Then was successful the next time putting everything into place.
I'm really concerned I might have not done it correctly so I installed speedfan to check temperatures. For the CPU I'm getting temperatures of 80degC (just posting this post). Which seems high, but I remember checking speedfan a while back and have a faint recollection of the temperatures also seeming high before. Also the GPU is at a similar temperature and I didn't touch that.
I'm just wondering should I pull the heat sink off and do the thermal paste again or is this a non-issue and these computers just run that hot normally?

A:Dell XPS 420 running hot (??) after Power supply replacement

I would redo the heatsink application, with Arctic Silver thermal compound.  Fully clean off the old thermal compound from both the top of the CPU and the bottom of the heat sink.

So, My dell xps 420 was working fine... I wanted to upgrade the video card but required a 500+ watt power supply...
I bought a power supply, 600w. I unscrewed the heat sink and cleaned up old paste residue, applying new, like advised to. I had to because the power supply cables went underneath for some reason. I put in the new power supply, a thermaltake, brand new!
So here's what happened. As soon as I plugged in the power, it started to boot, without even hitting the front button... I found that strange, but to my attention the computer started Buzzing, every 5-10 seconds... Just a buzz, and wouldn't display anything. Everything was connected properly. I'm wondering did the cpu get fried from applying new paste or is this too much power?

I'm really confused. Any bit of help to help resolve this. I don't want to buy a new computer because this was actually fine for what I use it for, but if there's something you know of. Please help!

Hello, everyone!
My laptop (Del XPS 17 L701X) started to freeze randomly, so I was thinking that my power supply may be failing (sometimes my laptop also lost power if I the power supply a little bit while connected, sometimes the same supply made a buzzing noise). I have to say, unfortunately this supply was not genuine Dell part, but some "Delta Electronics" supply. Anyway, I googled for Dell genuine power supply and found this one: Dell 130-Watt 3-Prong AC Adapter with 6 ft Power Cord
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=331-5817&mfgpid=208399
So that is one that I ordered (bear in mind, I don't have the original one that I bought my laptop with), but when I plugged it in, my Dell issued a warning, that AC power supply with only 130W is connected, the system may operate slower and that  I need 150W or more. Turns out my Laptop originally came with a 150W power supply, but even at the DELL official page it is said, that this 130W supply is the real deal. So I would like to know it this 130W supply will be enough or should I send this one back and exchange for 150W one. Do I have the risk to not to have enough power?
I have found on one page that this particular laptop consumes 123.2W on full throttle, if this helps (I have no means to test this myself, I believe).

alright...a friend of mine offered to give me his 420w power supply ( this one is like a 250w)..but his isn';'t from a dell...and i have heard that only dell stuff will work with dell computers...i don't have enough money to buy a new compy/build one, so I would really like this power supply ( he is giving me his old video card as well if it will work...)

although i do want it, i don't want it bad enough to risk frying my computer..so...anyone here have any input that might be helpful? don't think you need any computer specs or anything...but it's a dimension 4600. thanks for any help

hello- had a few days where comp would randomly restart while it was in an idle state.. i would come back to find the desktop with the 'recovery' background rather than my aquarium wallpaper, which indicates a loss of power and some kind of reboot, like when the power goes out.. only this time power in house stayed on- although its been windy and that seems to also trigger these little spikes.. so came down this morning to the setup screen, press f1 or f2.... nothing happens with f1.. f2 goes to the menu.. so i press the power button to turn it off. it goes off -then 5-10 seconds later push it back on and POP like a firecracker, and smell a little burned plasticy smell. so unplug everything, take it apart -clean it out - lots of dust.. I'm thinking the power supply blew? can get one for $29 online. Am sure you'll suggest a whole new computer, etc but I want to get back up running so I can get my pics/ files/ etc off my hard drive. then maybe look at new computer.. i do have this vista laptop I'm typing on. But hubby uses the xp for his email and internet.. any advice??

There's no need to spend a bunch of money on that "dinosaur" to try to get it running so you can retrieve your personal data from the hard drive.
If the power supply blew, it may have taken out the motherboard and other components.
Remove the hard drive, then insert it in a USB drive hard enclosure, then connect it to a working computer and attempt to retrieve your personal data.
Hopefully, the hard drive didn't get fried.

I have a Dell Precision M70 that works fine off of the battery, but will not operate or charge the battery off of the power supply. (I have a 2nd M70 with which to charge batteries). I suspected a worn out power supply input jack, so I ordered a replacement and completed the MB surgery last night (those 9 pin jacks are NOT fun to de-solder off the MB!). Results after jack replacement are the same - no sign of input power. As I don't have schematics for this MB, I don't know what is in the circuitry path from the jack. Perhaps a fuse, varistor, voltage regulator, corrosion verdigris, ???? - something that perhaps one of you out there has heard has a propensity for failure in the M70. I'd love to get this laptop back up and running - any ideas?

A:Dell M70 works on battery, not on power supply

Prior to troubleshooting, an observation:
Not sure what the prices are for parts for that laptop but on a pure cost basis, it seems like its going to be cheaper (from a time and money standpoint) to just buy a new motherboard from the manufacturer.
Assuming you still want to troubleshoot it:
Do you have access to other working M70's?

Would be interested to test the power supply on another identical laptop to see if the behavior persists, try other charger/power supplies with the same laptop.

Is the power supply modular? are there parts of it you can swap out with "known good" components?

Also try other batteries, and check the battery terminals for corrosion or dirt.

I understand that the computer operates fine when the battery is only discharging. Does it still operate when a power supply is attached, or does it cause some sort of fault? (understanding that it doesnt charge or draw current when the power supply is attached)

Hello,

My brother has a Dell Inspiron 530s, and it needs a new power supply. Could anyone possibly tell me what type of power supply I will need? I know it all depends on what type of connectors and wattage. I know that I will need at least a 250-watt power supply, but I'm not sure about the connectors. I tried to look it up on their website but they didn't specify. I just don't want to have to buy a power supply from dell's website, I'd prefer to get one from newegg.com or amazon.

Thanks in advance.

That's a SFF [small form factor] power supply. Doubt you'll find one that is higher watt rated. Amazon has the following:

http://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Dell-Inspiron-Systems-Identical/dp/B001GJCR46

and this one

http://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Dell-Inspiron-Identical-Compatible/dp/B002WPSS28/ref=pd_sim_misc_3

Looks like the only difference is base price & shipping costs.

Question...

My power supply recently went out on my Dimension 8100 computer. I've been told that with this particular PC I can only purchase one type of power supply. Is this true? and if it is why are all the power supplies that I've found for this over $80.00??? If anyone know's a good place to purchase this product for better than $80 please let me know... i'm desperate

Thanks

FC

I am afraid some Dell power supplies have an extra connection to the motherboard and to use a non Dell item could lead to you frying your board.
The only way round it is to change both PSU and board, which is an expensive option.

I?ve had my trust l502x for a few years now and it?s taken a few knocks over the years and fixed up fine. As of a couple of weeks ago I needed to replace the screen, after replacing the screen the laptop powered on fine on battery, however whenever I try to use the charger it?s LED flashes green. The charger is after market but had no problems to date. I?ve taken the laptop to bits and noted the supply only flashes when plugged in to the motherboard. It stays solid if not connected or connected to the laptops connector while it is disconnected from the motherboard but as soon as connected it flashes. Any idea what this could mean? I?d understand a motherboard issue or socket issue if it didn?t work disconnected or on battery only? Any help or advice would be amazing.

A:Dell XPS 15 L502X power supply question

If there's a  manual for the power adapter, see what it says.  When the LED on an OEM adapter flashes, it means the adapter is bad -- your best bet is to connect an OEM Dell adapter and see what happens.

Please can anyone confirm that a Dell Vostro 410 can accept a standard replacement power supply. I just wanted to make sure that this model does not use the Dell proprietary power supply that is fitted on some older models, before replacing.

Thanks in advance for any replies

Hi, i have a dell dimension 8400. My house was recently hit by lightning and caused my power supply to go bad. I am looking to replace it with an upgrade to the stock so that when I build my next computer i can use it. The stock isn't a standard power supply so I'm wondering how i we'll be able to buy one that will work for the Dimension and my future desktop. Im talking about how on the dimension thier is no place for a power switch like most.
Any ideas?

A:Dell Dimension 8400 power supply help

Some dell pw supplies and not standard atx that is the wiring is not standard. You need first to check with dell or the dell forum to see if your system uses a standard atx type pw supply OR a dell proprietary pw supply. If it is the latter, then you cannot install a standard atx pw supply.
