HP Pavilion x2 Battery drained quickly when in sleep mode

Q: HP Pavilion x2 Battery drained quickly when in sleep mode

I am having an issue with my battery draining quickly after I put the HP Pavilion x2 in sleep mode. It doesn't drain completely as some others have mentioned, but it does seem to drain fairly quickly in comparison to other laptops I have had. Am I doing something wrong with how I put it in sleep mode? I press the button on the top left of the screen/tablet. Please let me know if you can help me. Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have my lenovo x230 laptop set to sleep when I close the lid. When I close the lid the "sleep" icon on the back of the screen lights up. But the batter will not last through the night on sleep mode. Within five hours or so, the battery is completely drained and I have to plug in and boot up the system. I've never seen such poor batter performance during sleep mode on any other laptop I've ever owned.  Another thread in this forum blames the USB port that allows you to charge mobile phones/etc. during low-power states and recommends disabling the "always power on" option fo this USB port in the Bios settings. I've done so, be it doesn't seem to have helped. At least my laptop still will not make it through the night in sleep mode.  At this point, it seems my ownly option is to use sleep mode only when the laptop is plugged in and hibernation mode when on batter power, which is disappointing. I've never had to worry about this in the past with other laptops.  Perhaps/probably related is the fact that the lenovo ThinkVantage Power Manager (v. 7.16) hangs at the splash screen when I try to open it, so I've been trying to manage the power through the windows control panel power settings.

I have an old Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit, and I recently replaced the battery that originally came with it.

The new battery is good, it lasts about 4 hours on a charge, but Vista seems to be reacting to it very strangely. Immediately after I take it off AC power, Vista will alert me that my battery power has reached 99% and is critically low.

After that it'll run fine for about an hour, then when it hits 75% or so it will put itself into sleep mode automatically as if the battery was dead. After it's asleep, I can turn it right back on and it will run for an additional 3 hours before shutting down again (this time because the battery really is dead).

I've tried full-discharging the battery to calibrate it a couple of times, but it made no difference in the behavior. As far as I can tell the battery is fine otherwise (the percentage and time remaining that Vista tells me seem to be accurate), and the computer has no problems when it is plugged in to AC power.

This strange behavior happens exactly the same way every single time I run the computer on battery. Low Battery warning at 99% and false shutdown around 75%. After that it's fine. Any ideas what could be causing this problem?

A:Computer going to sleep before battery completely drained

Hello Chefgon, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Double check your advanced Power Plan Options (Control Panel) settings under the Battery options for what levels it should warn you at. You can adjust these settings for what it should do when it reaches the level you set.

Hope this helps,

I have a HP Pavilion X2 Product Number F5W70UA#ABA. I have been having trouble since I bought this just a few short months ago. The battery drains within an hour or 2 whenever I put the machine to sleep (close the lid, put in sleep mode, etc.). I have updated the BIOS and all the latest drivers. It helped ensure I could wake up the machine, but the battery keeps draining and I am at my wits end. I have also gone through many forum postings on this issue and have run the HP Battery Test as well as checked all the power management settings and they appear to be set up properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. - Jim

A:HP Pavilion X2 Battery Drains when in Sleep Mode

Hi DontLoveWindows, From the information that you have given me, it is showing that you have 2 anti-virus softwares installed. Avast and Norton, that are continuously running when the printer is in sleep mode, which would be draining your power. It also shows that your printer has missing or misconfigured drivers which could be using power as well. Here is an HP Photosmart Full Feature Software and Drivers download for your printer. I suggest that you Disable your startup software. To do this: Right click or touch and hold the bottom left corner of the screen and select Run.Type msconfig in the Run box, and then press Enter. The MSconfig window opens. If the User Account Control window opens with the message, Windows needs your permission to continue, click or tap Continue to close the window. If Normal Startup is currently selected, follow these steps:Select Selective Startup, and then clear the Load Startup Items check box.Click or tap the Services tab, and then select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box at the bottom of the screen.Click or tap Disable All.If Selective Startup is currently selected, follow these steps:Click or tap the Services tab, and then select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box at the bottom of the screen.Make a list of the items that are selected. I looked at the Event Viewer and it appears it entered sleep, and then resumed from sleep two seconds later (I'm guessing right after I shut the lid).  How do I stop this? I have the power options to "sleep" I have tried to turn off all the "Allow this device to wake up th computer" - no matter what I try, it seems to not go to sleep. It does *sometimes* but the vast majority, it doesn't if I just shut the lid.  My BIOS is updated.  Is there any lesser known fix?  EDIT: Oh yeah, and sometimes it won't wake up from sleep when pressing power, or opening lid, or pressing fn + 4.

Hello,

This laptop is about four and a half years old and recently the battery has started acting up. The battery discharges from a full charge in about 15-20 minutes.

Another problem I had with the battery was a 601 error at bootup - I got this error in the BIOS screen and it states that the battery has fallen below its optimal charge capacity.

I managed to "fix" this problem with a BIOS update. I then ran the powercfg utility and it shows that the battery is charging fully,

Battery:Battery Information
Battery ID 14089 2010/12/01Hewlett-PackardPrimary
Manufacturer Hewlett-Packard
Serial Number 14089 2010/12/01
Chemistry LIon
Long Term 1
Design Capacity 11502
Last Full Charge 11502

So can anyone tell me why the battery is discharging so quickly? Am running Windows 7 Home Premium in Power Saver mode and nothing is running in the background, and the only apps are a couple of browser windows.

Thank you in advance.

Hey all,

I'm having a little challenge for you guys I quess. It might not be that difficult, but I don't know if it is possible. Here's my situation: I've got a laptop (Acer) and when I close the screen, by default the laptop goes in to sleep mode which is a good thing. Now I'm using my laptop also as a mediastreaming device (dlna) to my blu-ray player. Now I would like to have for example a shortcut to prevent windows going in to sleep mode when I close the screen while streaming content to the blu-ray player. This to prevent that the laptop stops streaming when I close the screen. I would like to have this setting optional, so when I don't stream content to the blu-ray player, the laptop does go in to sleepmode when I close the screen. Is there a way to make this happen? By means of two shortcuts for example? 1 to prevent sleepmode and 1 to restore sleepmode to default?

I hope someone knows a way!

Kind regards,

Asterix058

A:Quickly change sleep mode

Hello Asterix,

As a workaround for this, you could setup two different power plans for this. Have one (ex: High Performance) set how you like when you use the computer normally, and the other (ex: Balanced) set to use for how you like when you are streaming.

Afterwards, you could use the tutorial below to create shortcuts to use to be able to easily toggle between using these power plans for this.

Hope this helps,

Anyone have a fix for the x1 carbon laptop going to sleep mode very quickly (1-2 minutes) while using a lenovo docking station?  It doesnt happen when i use the laptop without dock.  Ive tried all the normal setting in windows.  they are set to 15-20 minutes.  It still happens.  Ive updated the drivers for the docking station.  It still happens.  This is also an issue with an employee's 4th generation X1 and a USB-C dock.  After waiting for 25 minutes on lenovo chat and no one responding, i called in.  They spent 30 minutes playing with the same settings then said it was a software issue and transfered me to another department.  They tried to charge me $200 to fix the problem.  My laptop and dock are less than 6 months old.  I'm extremly upset with lenovo!

My G700 has had this issue recognizing its own OEM battery since I got it, and there is a long drawn out way of trying to resolve this, but the core problem I believe is that when the battery is Fully Drained it can't Self Identify as an OEM battery, so the laptop won't charge it.  Without charge, it will never get out of this state. Problem:  Battery not recognized correctly as OEM, so won't chargeFix:  Charge battery at least a little bit Yes, I know it won't charge, so how do you perform fix? Plug into power and take battery in and out 5-10 times, leave battery in and remove and replug power cord in side of laptop 5-10 times.  Then leave for 15 minutes, then boot normally. Battery will now be recognized!  Why because you managed to get just enough juice in there while trying to identify the battery 10x or so, for the battery to be able to successfully identify itself when you did start it up. This is a HACK fix, but way better than uninstalling, reinstalling power software, BIOS software and device drivers a number of times (which does not work all that well, I have found). Hope this helps you, let me know! OHHH, and keep your battery charged at least a little to prevent this from happening, and turn power off when not using.  I am not sure if this is just some faulty batteries or all batteries, let me know if other batteries behave better than mine. Best,Mark Eckdahl

When I put my (admittedly old) laptop into sleep mode (while plugged in) it will appear to work, but when I wake it up, the screen remains black. It is awake, but the backlight does not turn back on when the CPU does. I haven't seen information about this being a common issue with this computer (although there are other Sleep Mode issues with it). A full restart fixes this issue, for now.

The AMD Radeon video driver would not install properly recently, so I got around to manually installing it a few nights ago. Everything else is working properly, and the Windows Experience Index actually went up after installing the new driver (for whatever that's worth).

It is an HP Pavilion g6 2090ca; Intel Core i5 2450M processor; 6 GB DDR3 RAM; Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1.

Is this a known issue with Radeon cards, HP laptops from that generation, or just a sign that my computer is on its last legs?

Hello there,
I have a Dell Inspiron 3542 and for the past few weeks I have found that the battery drains after shutting down the laptop. The following is a step by step explanation of the issue :
1. After charging the laptop to 100 %, I clicked Start > Power > Shut down.
2. After waiting for like 5 minutes and ensuring that the laptop is, like "dead" ( no sounds, vibrations or anything ), I closed the lid and kept it on the table.
3. Next day, switch the laptop on and it does not turn on. The battery light flashes for a second and goes off. I connect the AC adapter and the laptop switches on. It shows 0 % battery.
I have run a full diagnostic check up of the laptop and the results do not display any issues related to memory, hard disk or the battery. Lid sensor also works perfectly.

Hi,

I've a problem with my Z930-164 : The battery loose around 8% every 12 hours while it is off.

I've the latest bios (6.80) and the latests drivers. I'm with windows 7 64 bits.

By trying many things, I've founded that it is the option : "Sleep and Charge" in the bios. By default it is on Auto mode (1.5 A), there is a 2.0A mode too. If I turn it off, the battery only loose 1% every 12 hours while it is off.

In default mode, why it does not power the USB while sleeping ONLY if there is a device ? Not to drain the battery !

It is a huge problem no ?

null

A:Satellite Z930 : Battery is drained while off

The enabled Sleep & Charge function affects the battery working time.
Sleep & Charge allows to charge external connected devices (like smartphone) even if the notebook is in sleep mode.

Furthermore enabled ?Wakeup? options (Wake up on LAN, etc..) which are available in BIOS would lead to battery discharging.
Therefore disable these options if you don?t want to discharge the battery.

I bought this pc a week ago but only noticed a couple of days ago that when the machine goes into sleep mode I cant wake it up properly. I thought that it was my wireless mouse at first so changed to the included non-usb one to see what would happen. Ok here is what is going on. The PC is a HP with a Intel® Core™2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz CPU:0, has Japanese Vista Home Premium installed, 4gb ram, NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS etc. When the PC goes into sleep mode and I try to wake it up, I get the display up just fine, but the mouse indicator is frozen. Sometimes I get that dreaded BSOD and when I try to boot up again it wont. I then have to go back into safe mode (F8) and choose the second alternative which I think reads something like this in English [abondon restore and reboot]. Having gone through that the pc boots up fine. Can somebody please suggest what the problem might be and how to solve it please. I have searched the web somewhat and have seen a post somewhere here that suggested that it may be connected to the graphics card. I have tested the graphics card out and there seems to be no problem there, and the drivers are the very latest.

Thank you in advance.

Please post the BSOD information as it will help us to isolate the problem.Where did you get the video drivers from? I generally avoid Windows Update and HP for video drivers - preferring to get them from (in this case) http://www.nVidia.com. Have you tried to roll the drivers back? Have you tried removing the old drivers completely, rebooting, and then installing the newly downloaded nVidia drivers? Is this 32 bit or 64 bit Vista? 32 bit Vista doesn't recognize all 4 gB of RAM (I've got it on 2 systems at home). Although I haven't noticed any significant problems with it, I'm starting to wonder if there's any drawbacks to using too much RAM on these systems.

I was one of the lucky people who got an advance retail copy of Win 7 Ultimate. I've installed it on my HP Pavilion DV7 laptop and have discovered that both sleep mode and hibernate mode cause the computer to lock up completely requiring a forced power down. When entering sleep or hibernate mode the screen will shut off, you'll see a few seconds of HD activity and then the computer completely locks up. The backlit multimedia keys above the keyboard remain lit (these normally turn off in sleep or hibernate mode) and all keys and buttons are unresponsive except the power button, which I can hold down for 5 seconds to force a power-off. The laptop shipped with Vista Home Premium, both sleep and hibernate modes worked perfectly with Vista.

I have updated the BIOS to the latest one which HP says is needed as it adds Win 7 support. I have read the other threads on this site a few others talking about making changes to the various power settings, I have tried all of those suggestions and nothing seems to work. Unfortunately, the BIOS on this laptop does not have settings where I can edit the S1 and/or S3 modes but, again, sleep/hibernate worked perfectly under the previous OS. Has anyone seen something similar on another system and managed to fix it?

I'd suggest sourcing the latest updates for your NIC/audio/video/AV drivers directly from the vendors, and testing what happens when all drivers are updated as much as possible.

Power state transition lockups are almost always caused by incompatibilities with the BIOS or bugs in drivers.

When running on battery this computer rarely wakes from sleep.  I noticed that if I try to wake from manually entering sleep within about 10 seconds it will come back on rare occasion, typically only once after a reboot.  Any longer than 10 seconds and it won't happen.  If the charger is connected, the device is 10x more likely to return from sleep after a few seconds.  Additionally, the manual says you can wake from sleep by opening the lid, pressing the power key, pressing a keyboard key, or tapping the touch pad.  My HP only wakes from the power bottun when on battery, and the power button and sometimes when opening the lid when connected to the charger.  The keyboard and touchpad have no effect.  I've updated all the drivers/bios from the support assistant.  While updating drivers in attempt to fix this issue, the display driver said a power state could not be changed.  I verified Windows 10 has completed all updates.  I uninstalled and reinstalled the Display driver.  No errors the second time.  I went to the device manager and made sure the keyboard power management setting was set to wake from sleep.  I did mess with the power settings a bit, I reset them to default levels of the HP recommended settings.  Nothing seems to help the situation. I've followed the steps on this site: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03383935 Any recommendations?  It w... Even when notebook is OFF battery will lose the capacity so it is ?normal?.
How many percent will battery lose is different and not the same on all notebook models.

To be honest if you use notebook on battery power supply it is logic to me that during the night you use hibernation and not stand-by mode. Stand-by mode is for short period of time only.

I've tested many times !!!I was frustrated so I took the battery off with some screwdrivers. So now I only use the AC adapter. However, the freaking thing still happen! I have received my new X260 laptop a month ago (also my first Lenovo), I did a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro and a bunch of drivers. It has been working well until now. Two days ago, I used it all-day with original adaptor plugged in. At the end of the day, I unplugged it and close the lid to put it to Sleep mode before I left work. The day after, I came to work and found my X260 battery was at 5%. I thought I have mistakenly set the Power Option so I checked and it was set to Sleep when I close the lid. Yesterday, I did the same, put it to Sleep before leaving work, but this time I clicked Start > Power icon > Sleep to make sure it entered Sleep mode and I watched the red LED on the lid blink slowly. Today I came to work and the battery was at 5% again! I am suspecting that X260 woke up at some point during the night. I don't know how, no cables connected. Please guide me if I need to update any driver or check any settings on Windows/BIOS. Thank you.

Does anyone have any idea what could cause a netbook battery to not charge unless it's completely drained of power first?

If you don't know the answer to that, then how easy is it to replace an Asus netbook battery?

The lap top has been working with no issues since purchase, but last week it was being used and the battery was completely drained and it switched off. As it was not needed at that point, it was left until the following morning. When it was plugged in, it woudl not start. So we left it charging and still nothing. When you push the start button the keyboard lights up for a few seconds and then goes off and that is it. I have read through numerous other similiar issues and have tried all of the following with no success: 1. Pushed and held power button for times ranging from 20 seconds to 1 minute2. Tried reset button3. Opened up back and pulled plug out of battery, then tried various combinations of pushing power for extended periods, with no power cable etc, and then plugging back in again So now at a bit of a loss as tried everything I can read on line with people suggest, the only other but I have read is about removing RAM, but not sure where they, I think below the battery. So not sure if I need to completely remove the battery etc, but wanted to see if anyone else had any better / easier ideas before I try that. Thanks for any help and guidance Model number - Lenovo Yoga 2 13, Model name 20344

I have a HP Pavilion 15-ab165US.  I am using it as a desktop with monitor separate, so the lid is shut as it is under a monitor stand. I want it to go to sleep when not active for 30 minutes, but when it does I have to slide it out, open the lid  each time and hit the power button to start it up again.  How can it have it start up without going through all of that?

Hello All, Frustrated new owner of HP Pavilion x360 - convertible  here. Bought this computer about 2 weeks ago.  Here are the issues I've been having. 1.  Computer goes into sleep mode no matter what minutes setting I've set to (both on battery and plugged in)I've even set everything to never; laptop would still go into sleep mode after 3 to 5 minutes of no-use. 2.  Spent 2 to 3 hours with HP rep, whom of which remotely accessed my laptop, downloaded a bios update, installed bios update.  After the bios update, we tested the problem byleaving computer untouched for about 5 minutes or so; issue seems to be solved. 3.  After step 2, HDMI external monitor not sending signal to monitor.  My ext. monitor can't detect a signal.  (I actually had problems when I first tried to use an external monitor, had to do several restarts and shutdowns to finally have monitor detect and signal from the laptop.)   I know it's not the hdmi cable or monitor, as I've tried inter-switching monitors and cables with my amazon fire TV.   And all monitors and cables were okay. 4.  Nevertheless, after step 3, I fiddled around and restarted and shutdown the laptop some more times, and somehow the monitor finally detected a signal, and screen works again. 5.  BUT HERE WE GO AGAIN...... LAPTOP GOES INTO THE DREADFUL SLEEPMODE after 3 to 5 minutes of idling.  This is really frustrating when you're working a a... Read more

After a period of non-use, the laptop goes into "sleep" mode where the screen goes completely black and the white power light is a steady white color (i.e. not flashing).  At that point, I am unable to "wake" up the laptop by clicking a key, pushing the power button or clicking the mouse.  Nothing works.  I have to hold down the power button and do a hard boot.  Very annoying.  Any fixes?Note:  I went to the settings and chose "never" for sleep mode.  That does not fix the problem.
