Laptop screen flashes and constant sleep after purchasing new battery

Q: Laptop screen flashes and constant sleep after purchasing new battery

Hi, I recently purchased a new 12 cell battery for my HP dv-1659us laptop. I never have my laptop plugged in now days...as opposed to always having my laptop plugged in, becaues the HP OEM battery sucked. (So i couldn't tell you if it was the battery's problem.)

But, now, whenever I'm unplugged, ever so often, usually when im on Youtube, my laptop automatically goes to sleep and turns off the HD. I have to press my power key to wake it up..log back in..and my applications/ youtube video resumes. I checked my power management, put it to sleep at around 30 minutes, so I know that its not sleeping because I'm "inactive". Anyone know what might be the problem?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Last week the fuses in my bedroom suddenly blew. At the same time I heard a loud crack and the smell of burning and smoke. Nothing was on fire so I thought it was something in the wall. I checked the fuses, turned them all back on and everything was fine. I went back to my computer, finished with it and turned it to sleep mode. When I woke up the next day it wouldn't turn on again. Everytime I press the power button I see the light by the plug flash 3 times. I've looked this up and tried removing the battery, draining it of electricity... I've tried everything but I only get those 3 flashes. Have I maybe broken the charger and has my laptop drained of electricity? I can't think of anything else, but that the burning smell might have been from the charger. Can I check this somehow? Please help!!

Hi, Guy at work gave me his vaio to fit a new keyboard, its a vgn bx51xp. Keys were missing and some not working.
Iv had it for months now as they keyboards are very expensive! but he decided to pay the 60 gbp for one.

Now the laptops been turned off for months, but it worked fine, so i just replaced the keyboard, and when its plugged in, the battery light flashes twice constantly. Will not power up, charged for couple of hours, and no charge is in the battery. There is charge coming out of the charge pins and adapter etc have been tested and are all outputting correct voltage. I opened up the laptop to have a look at the power board and couldn't see anything but i was out of options.

When i put it back together i couldn't get a light, Which turned out to be the faulty dimm socket, Lights back on now after resetting (how annoying when 2 things go and you have no idea).

My question is, shouldn't the laptop turn on off a\c without battery? as i get no response, which is annoying, as i don't wanna buy a new battery if the laptops kaput! (Already put 60 of own money in the keyboard and can't charge him if it doesn't work!)

If anyones got any advice? or knows if this particular laptop doesn't run off a/c without the battery would greatly help!

Thanks in advance!

Hello. I have purchased the Lenovo Yoga 170-14IKB with 1080p touchscreen, 8gb RAM and i5-7200U.Since it is a bit older, and I realized I need more RAM for my school projects and assignments, I decided to go for a "Crucial SO-DIMM 16GB DDR4 SDRAM 2400MHz CL17 Dual Ranked" memory, since on the Crucial's website it was stated that this Yoga supports that RAM. So I clicked purchace, got the RAM, upgraded, and suddenly my Yoga is warm when in sleep. It also draws so much power in sleep in Windows 10, that it discharges in a few hours when still in sleep. Before the upgrade, the Yoga lasted a week or two in sleep mode. Now, only a few hours. Is there any way to solve this issue? I was considering a BIOS upgrade might help, but I'm running the lates bios 2XCN38WW (V2.12).Are you aware of this issue? Is anyone else having this issue? Can I provide you with any more information to help me solve this problem? I need my Yoga's battery life as I spend a lot of time in school during the day. Also, I'm running Window 10 x64 Pro - build 17134. Thank you in advance!

I just completed a fresh install of Windows 7 on my Dell XPS 17. For some reason, when the computer is on battery power and is idle, the screen will flicker. Basically if I am on battery power, the moment I stop typing or using the mouse, the screen will flicker after about a second. Then as soon as I resume using the computer, it will flicker again. It will also flash at random other times... Only when on battery power (so far).

As I mentioned, I just completed a fresh install of windows 7 after reformatting my drive because of virus issues. I did have some issues with getting drivers installed and still have have that are missing (see attached photo). I have not been able to get these drivers to install. One thought I had is that the screen issue may be a result of improperly installed graphics drivers? Just a thought. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

A:Solved: Screen Flashes when on battery power, also issue with drivers

You should check your power settings at first and change them from what they are as a first step to troubleshooting. For example, if you computer goes to power saver automatically then turn it to high performance temporarily to see if the problem continues or turn it to power saver if it's on high performance (all while it's on battery of course).

If the issue is resolved by those steps then you should check out your drivers, or there is not enough current being provided by your battery for your GPU and you may need a new battery, especially if the issue is occurring when you are on high performance. A local computer store can check if that's the best option for you if you don't want to pay for a new battery right away as it may not be the issue entirely.

In terms of the drivers, you should first make sure your GPU drivers are working properly, following that check your other drivers and ensure that all the ones you are using are working properly and are up-to-date. Use the integrated Dell tool, or check the Dell website for your model for driver updates, ensure you've downloaded all the ones for your respective newly installed OS.

Best way I can explain the flashes is that I get this pink/blue/reddish mess of a whole lot of colors on my screen. It literally happens in seconds and flashes, sometimes it recurs and other times it won't. Where the colors are also changes, sometimes about 40% of my screen flashes this mess of colors, other times less or it appears as lines. I have no idea what it is

However, if I could draw a similarity, it's sorta like the mess of colors you get on your screen if its broken/damaged. No shape or pattern, just a lot of colors. Though, my screen isn't broken or damaged (It's actually working fine as I type this, for instance) hence my loss of what it could be

I'd also like to add that this occurred specifically while I was playing an online game. Though in addition to that I'd also like to point out that a minor version of it appeared when I restarted my computer and it loaded into Windows

So I'm pretty lost as to what it is. Any ideas? Really hoping its nothing that will cripple my laptop completely -_-

A:Laptop screen flashes colors

That sounds a bit like either the video cable is badly connected or the graphics chip is suffering from the well known "ball grid array" problem.

Remove or disconnect the battery.  With the system unplugged, hold the power button for 30 sec.
Try powering up on AC only - if it will but won't with the battery installed, the battery is bad.
If it still won't power up, the mainboard is bad.

A:blue screen flashes then laptop restarts

Hi jess_bohannon,

First post the full specs of the computer specs here. This will help us troubleshoot your computer issue.

One thing you can do is to update the computer hardware drivers on the computer. Update the videocard drivers, motheboard chipset drivers, and even soundcard drivers and see if that helps resolves the blue screen issue. Also, if the blue-screen error comes up again, please post the stop error here as well.

Another thing you can do if the blue-screen persist after updating the computer hardware drivers, is to perform a check disk repair on the computer and see if that works out for you. Here is the link to the instructions on how to perform a check disk repair: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP

I would also go to the manufacturer's website of the hard-drive on your computer, download their "HDD Dianostics Utility" program, put the program onto a CD, boot the computer to it, and test the hard-drive for any errors. Hope everything works for you.

I haven't verified this yet, but I wondered if it's a possible bug?

I bought a Dell XPS M1330 over a year ago and it came preloaded with Vista Home Premium. Since I want to keep the batteries in good condition I run the laptop with no battery connected and AC plugged in whenever it sits on my desk at home.

However, in Windows 7 it seems that Windows wants to put the laptop to sleep after 10-15 minutes if I do this. Since I have various USB devices plugged in, especially external storage, this is a problem. It goes away if I run with the battery plugged in but like I said, not verified yet.

A:Laptop goes to sleep if no battery but AC plugged in

It's not bug.. It's new power management settings in windows 7.
You can easily change it just press you battery icon and press more power options
You will come up with window like this:
Now press change plan settings for the plan you are using.. After this it's very user frindly ( you can choose when dim you brightness, when put in sleep and when turn off hardware)

Hi all,

I have an Inspiron 1525 that is one year old. Recently the battery will be completely dead when I try to turn on the laptop and will not power on unless I plug it in. The battery meter will be at 0% when it starts up, but recharges normally when plugged in. When I unplug the laptop and close the lid (which puts it into sleep mode) the battery will be completely dead by the next morning even if it was at 100% before I closed it. I don't know why the battery is discharging completely so quickly when the computer isn't even running.

Could this just be a problem with my battery? Or is the laptop not actually sleeping when I close it, but continually using up battery power? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

A:Laptop battery discharging when in sleep mode

Note there's a difference between "Sleep" vs. "Hibernation"
> Sleep mode still requires power (It should be minimal power but definitely still draws some power)
> Hibernation requires zero power

That said, i still wouldn't expect a good battery to discharge overnight on sleep mode so you probably still have an issue with your battery holding a charge

Hello everyone.

A few hours ago my computer was in sleep mode and unplugged when the battery died. Upon plugging it back in, I was met with an empty black screen. I turned it off by holding the power button, but the laptop refuses to boot now.

Upon turning it on, I get the Toshiba start up screen for less than a second before it goes to the Windows Error Recovery Page. Both options (Launch Startup Repair (recommended) and start windows normally) results in a screen that says 'windows is loading files...' with a status bar, then moves on to another screen showing another status bar (this one green with the microsoft corp at the bottom but no graphic) and ultimately to a black screen with a white cursor. From there, nothing works. The same happens if I try to start it in safe mode (with or without networking).

I have a system repair disc for the laptop but I haven't been able to do anything with it.

Fortunately 99% of the info on the laptop is backed up. Unfortunately the 1% that isn't is the most important (class notes for the last 4-5 weeks).

I have the extended warranty on it from best buy that actually expires in 4 days, but I certainly don't want to ship off my computer for who knows how long with those files on there.

Hello, I was wondering if it would is possible to order a Lenovo notebook with the battery preinstalled? I work at an Embassy overseas, and they will only allow shipping of notebooks if the battery was preinstalled by the manufacturer. Has anyone had any luck with this?

Hello,
I have the Dell XPS 13, i5, with the Win 10 OS (64 bit) - just got it not long ago.
When I put the laptop on Sleep Mode (Either if I close the lid, or if I do it from the "Start Menu" and choose the "Sleep" option), the Laptop goes to sleep, and then wakes up immediately (after 2-3 seconds) with no apparent reason. If I immediately try to make it "sleep" again, it wakes up again after 2-3 seconds. It is like it refuses to sleep. The only way to fix it, is to restart the laptop, which sometimes fixes the problem, only until it happens again - and I notice too late when my battery is empty.
It deprives me of relying on the Sleep Mode, which is really 50% of the user experience on a SSD laptop.
How can I fix this?

Thank you
Boaz

Put it to sleep with the lid open.  After it wakes, open an admin command prompt and type the following.. Let us know what it says.
powercfg -lastwake

Hi, I have a Lenovo Yoga 900 (Intel Core i7-6560U 3.2 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Windows 10) and have been experiencing the following issue since I purchased it: I put the laptop in sleep mode and into my laptop bag. The laptop will wake up by itself later despite the lid is closed. It then stays on as it's inside the laptop bag it gets very hot and drains the battery. Since this has happened closer to 10 times already I'm worried if the battery life is already damaged due to heating. Normally when I close the lid the laptop goes onto sleep mode.  I have already taken many measures to try and stop it from waking up from this article (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/stop-windows-computer-randomly-waking/). I have set the power setting so that it should always go on sleep mode when the lid is closed. I don't understand how it goes on even when the lid is closed.  What could be the problem? Thanks in advance!

Here's my example:
I have a laptop running Windows 7, I have disabled Hibernation mode.
I put the laptop into sleep mode, and during that time the battery drains completely.
What happens with the save state information that was stored in RAM memory?
I have read on a blog that Windows will automatically switch to Hibernation mode and save it to a local HiberSys.fil, but will that still happen if Hibernation mode has been disabled?
And is the process the same for Windows 10?
Thanks in advance for any information you guys can offer on this situation.

Good Morning all,
I have a Dell Inspiron 15 (7559) Laptop.  When I went to go power on the laptop, the keyboard lights up, but nothing appears on screen.  I also noticed the "Battery Light" indicator on the laptop was flashing.  It would flash white four times and then flash orange two times.  In the beginning I thought my laptop had died so I went ahead and charged the laptop.  I was able to charge the laptop, so I'm thinking that the battery is still good.  I'm hoping someone out here on these forums can help me diagnose and resolve this issue before I contact tech support.  Any information you guys/gals can provide is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

( fresh install of new (2007)winxp pro, unadulterated ) no other software.

The sound is tick tock tick tock, similiar to an old style mechanical clock, the sound is not loud, but perceptable, and about once every 1.3 seconds, in time with the led flashes.

The constant interval hard drive activity prevents the hard drive from auto power down when computer is unattended for long periods of time. In essence rendering that power saving feature useless.

Of course it would be nice to know, just what is causing the reads, and how to stop this.

A:Constant hard drive activity at 1.3 second intervals. Led flashes in time to the tick

Generally, this is normal and is the strobe of the CD-ROM for contents by the autoplay functionality. Some flash and some don't. But that is not supposed to prevent any power events from taking place.

Do you see any thing in the Task Manager that also pulses like that? Does it make any difference if the drive has a CD in it?

Download and run ProcMon to see what disk reads and writes are taking place and by what.

Regardless of battery level, it will flash all 5 LED's when I press the indicator button.
I have tried reinstalling the BIOS but it did not fix the problem. Any ideas? Could it be a motherboard issue?
