I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an end user with Office 2003 Basic. In his Word application he is unable to select text with the mouse. The mouse will work in the toolbar and it works just fine in Excel. He can select text with the arrow key, he can edit the document so it is not protected and you can see the mouse down in the document.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled, did the support.dot, removed, renamed normal.dot as Microsoft as said to do with no luck.

Any help with this problem will be greatly appreciated.

In my Word 2003 program, I have some templates shown that are no longer used by me. They are listed at the right hand side of the "New Documents" window under "Recently Used Templates" Can anyone tell me how I can remove unused items from this list, please? Additionally, if I click on "Templates on my Computer", only my currently used template is shown, so I want to delete the "Recently Used" list as it is surplus to requirements. Many thanks.

I have a 20 page document, each page has an identical layout with a mixture of text and tables.

I am running a mailmerge on the document which works successfully. My problem is that after the mail merge has completed, I am left with about 15 blank pages per record as their is not always data to merge for every page for each record. Does that make sense? I am printing the final document when the mail merge completes but I dont want to print lots of "blank" templates where no data was merged for that record.

Does anyone know of a macro I can run on the mail merged document which will delete the pages where no data was merged to it. To decide if a page is deleted, the condition could be something like
if mergefiled = blank or if particular cell in table is blank,
then delete complete page of document

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A document I created several weeks ago and have printed several times before, suddenly decided to stop printing yesterday! EVERYTHING else printed (other microsoft documents, internet documents, etc.). I tried opening a new document and copying & pasting the information and eventually learned that all of the information would print until I attempted to put information in one specific column. It would not even print if there were spaces in that column! What is happening?!

A:Word not printing specific document

Oh... and it is sending the file to the printer, but the printer is never receiving the information! But ONLY for this document and ONLY when there is text or images or spaces or anything in that particular column!

I also have another document with columns (a brochure) that I have printed several times before, that is now no longer printing! Could this because Microsoft recently updated?!

I also tried changing the fonts, changing the images I was using... nothing works!

Does anyone know if it is possible to get Word 2007 to select a different default dictionary based on the current document? If I open a personal letter, for example, I want to use my personal dictionary as default, so that when I right-click to add a word, it goes in there; if, however, I am writing a technical document, I want a right-click to add to my work-related dictionary. I know I can change the default by going into options, but it is difficult to remember each time I open a document.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Best wishes, Patrick

Need help trying to save a word 2007 document. Am running Windows Vista. I have been working on this document for the past couple of days, a high school maths investigation with lots of equations and graphs copied over from 'Autograph' a 3d graphing software. I have been able to save it with ease with all this stuff on it until an hour ago. When I press CTRL+S it opens up the save as box (even though i've already saved it before). Then when i press save in this dialog box the box closes for a half a second before opening again without me pressing anything. I do it again and again and notice the little loading bar that tells you it's saving in the bottom right hand corner of the document gets stuck and then stops when the box opens up again. I've tried to rename it and this doesn't work. i copied it into an old word document and then saved that document and that document wouldn't save either. i got rid of it off that document and the old document saved perfectly. I closed it just to check it was actually not saving and it isn't. Is there something wrong with my document? or is it word? please help!

I have both Office 97 and 2K on my PC. Because most of our users haven't been upgraded yet, I would prefer to have 97 be the default when I double-click on a document. I know how to change the default, but if I'm not quick to hit cancel when Office2K does its install thing, my settings get overridden.

Is there a way in the Target of a shortcut to specify the program to use when I open that particular document? I use this one doc a lot, so I'd rather have its icon sitting on my desktop than have to open Word97 and then load the doc, but having the two versions can be a pain sometimes.

(I'm not sure--this might be a question better served by the Windows forum, but I'm giving it a shot here first.)

Last night I spent 8 hours typing a story that I had my heart set on for quite some time. I was very proud of myself and how everything was going. Well, after I got done with half of it I saved my document. I went to go open it this morning and every single character in the document has been turned into a space. I am not very thrilled with this. I have Google Searched after Google Search trying to find ways to:

1: Recover the document
2: Find the Windows 7 version of the TEMP folder so I can recover my lost time and effort
3: Just get my document back.

Does anyone have any clue that could help me with anything besides type it again?

A:Word 2003 wiped my document!

Never heard of that happening. If it isn't in the autosave directory, then you are kind of screwed. I believe Word2003 uses the the %temp% variable for it's temp folder if you haven't turned on autosave.

By default, the %temp% folder is %userprofile%\appdata\local\temp.

A friend of mine has MS Word 2003 and though it always used to work, a couple of days ago, it simply began to refuse to save anything. She is typing something for school, and when she tried to save the document, the "save" dialog box disappears for a second, then pops back up.......nothing else can work, of course, so long as that box is there........she tries repeatedly to save it, but it will disappear and reappear immediately each time. The only way she can do anything is to remove the name in the "name" area and then just click on the "x" at the top right of the dialog box. At that point, everything she's typed disappears and the MS Word page is blank again.

I've never heard of such a thing, but I'm not real familiar with the Office products. Does anyone have any idea what is going on and how to fix this?

Hi All,

All systems are running XP with service pack 3 and all have MS Office 2003 installed. The issue I'm having is when my client tries accessing a word document from their workstation, the document takes a substantial time to do anything i.e. open, save, edit text etc. After a bit of research, Office Validation Tool looks like a likely reason for this problem. Everything I've indicates excel, but this effect word too?

I have done typing over the Internet for years. My regular computer is in being fixed and they have given me a loaner. The only strange thing about it is that when I used my own disk to load Word 2003 on the loaner computer, it came up with its own product code - you know those letters and numbers you have to put in -- anyway, I tried to enter my own, but it would not work. I had to use the ones that automatically came up. I don't know how they got there. The only thing I can think of is that the previous owner of the computer had loaded Word and that this was his product code!

Anyway, my work requires the use of templates that are merge documents. I have to install a certain SQL file in C:\WINDOWS\Temp. The file is there. I have checked. But when I open a document it says its looking for the SQL file in C:\WINDOWS\Temp -- but it can't find it.

I have tried and tried all morning - emailing the company back and forth in the UK and it just will not work. I am completely baffled. The file is there - the path is correct and yet it says Word cannot find it.

Does anyone have any suggestions? The only thing I can think of is that the previous owner - the owner of that product code - had some kind of administrative blocking on the computer.

Anyway, I am not making money and would like to figure it out so appreciate any help.

A:Word 2003 merge document problem

Hi Purley,

How did you get the SQL file into ...temp?

You need to have the SQL file point to a data source; the SQL is just a filter against a data source somewhere else and that connection needs to be established first.

Is the source database on another Server e.g. at the Company you are doing work for?

You should contact the company's IT admin to make sure you have connectivity.

I am having a issue with a couple of workstations in which if I click on a Word document icon on the desktop, in a email or in Windows Explorer, Word will launch but the document does not open. Once Word is open, I can click Open and navigate to the file and it opens up with no problem.

Both machines are running WinXP SP2. One has Microsoft Office 2003 and the other I just upgraded to Office 2007 basic (it was having the same issue with Office 2003 so I tried to upgrade to see if that would fix it). The one that is running Office 2003 worked fine until I uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2003 to correct a email issue I was having.

I have tried resetting the extensions in Win Explorer to have any .doc file extension open with winword.exe, I have renamed the DATA folder in the Registry, I have tried detect and repair Word from the Help menu in Word, I have tried re-registering Word, I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office....I'm not sure what to do next.

I know at least one of the machines came pre-installed with Office 2007 trial version. I'm not sure about the other one. Could "remnants" of that program be causing issues?

Any thoughts? Let me know. Thank you.

I hope this is the right sub-forum for this question.

Problem: in addition to the AutoRecover feature kicking in every 10 minutes, another auto backup is occurring every 60 seconds or so. I first noticed this 7 or 8 months ago when the document first rolled past 1,000 pages in length. Because of the length of the document, these now take 10 to 12 seconds to do their thing and this is hindering my ability to work with the document (entering additions and changes).

Current Settings:
Save Options
Checked are:
- Allow Background Saves
- Embed linguistic data
- Save AutoRecover info every (10 minutes)
- Embed smart tags

Question: is there any way I can change this auto backup sequence so that it only activates every 20 minutes or so? I am talking about the auto backup and not the AutoRecover, of course. It is one big annoyance right now because the document cannot be worked on when the auto backup is doing its thing.

Thanks, and hope someone can help,

Is there a mechanism in Word 2010 (and also Excel, perhaps) which allows me to DELETE the document I'm currently viewing?

I'd imagine it would be under the "File" menu if it existed, but I've not found it so far.

An example of its use: I prepared a document of things to take to a reunion. My PC was still on when I got home, displaying the list (which I'd saved, as I went along). I didn't know what I'd called the document, and I wasn't certain where I'd filed it, but I know I wanted to delete it.

A:How to delete the current document in Word 2010?

Of course you can't delete open files!
But you can hover over file->open to see the last files you opened. Open the one you want. Do a fake "save as" to see the folder it's in.

Now you know the file name and location, so delete it in windows file explorer

I'm not totally new to VBA (in fact I'm so old I'm out-of-date on many things), but I am new to using it in Word and the Word object model. I'm embarrassed to say that I've spent days on this problem and have not yet wrapped my wits around how to work with the Range and selection objects.

I'm looping to each paragraph and testing to see if the word "chapter" is contained in the first line. If it is, I intend to do the following:
1) select the entire line (containing a chapter title if present)
1a) test to ensure the word "chapter" is not in a table nor in a string in the first sentence
2) reset the style if valid and
3) if there is no chapter title, replace the selection with a number using Word builtin styles that I have modified. (this is not yet coded entirely)

However, after getting the new para, when I tell the range to select the first sentence, it also picks up any extra paragraph markers that might be below the sentence. Then, when I set my format, it also formats these markers and/or adds numbers. I have not been able to figure out how to make word only pick up the first sentence and not ensuing blank paragraph markers as well. When I do anything to remove the markers from the selection, it literally removes the markers from my document. It seems like this should be simple and I'm probably just missing a builtin function or something. I also don't know a clean way to strip extra ASCII characters that show ... Read more

A:Solved: VBA-Word 2003:Select picks up extra para markers

I finally worked it out with a workaround. Probably would have saved time to study more.

I created a function to determine how many extra paragraph markers Word was picking up during the "select" process, then added utilized some Word devices.

Public Function fCountParaMarks(sSelText) As Integer

'use with fSetChapterHeads
Dim i As Integer
fCountParaMarks = 0
'For Each str In sSelText 'Selection.Text
Do Until Right(sSelText, 1) <> Chr(13)
If Right(sSelText, 1) = Chr(13) Then
'it's a marker, so count it
i = i - 1
End If
sSelText = Left(sSelText, Len(sSelText) - 1)

i = i + 1
fCountParaMarks = i
End Function

I added these things to my code:

For Each oPar In ActiveDocument.Paragraphs
i = oPar.Range.Words.Count
oPar.Range.Sentences(1).Expand (wdSentence)
'select the sentence which captures extra empty paragraph markers
'set the variable sentence
curSent = Selection.Text
'run the function to find where the end of the sentence should end
oPar.Range.MoveEnd Unit:=wdCharacter, Count:=fCountParaMarks(curSent)
'reselect the new range
'see the new sentence without the added paragraph markers
curSent = Selection.Text

Well, here is the problem, I appreciate that this may be specific to my works network etc. but just wondering if anyone had come across anything similar or had any ideas what may cause it?

I worked all day yesterday on a document I am producing, did regular saves throughout the day as I always do. It is a big file (52.5Mb) containing a lot of pictures, hence the size.

Finished work yesterday, saved again and shutdown the machine, same as normal.

When I came in this morning, started her up and opened the file, it had lost all the work I did yesterday with the file reverting back to as it was when I finished on Monday. No errors came up, did not ask to recover from a temp file or anything, it opened as normal apart from missing all the work I did yesterday.

It was saved on a networked drive, I.T. guys are a little stumped at the moment, they say there is no version controlled backups on that particular network, I have searched to ensure I didn't randomly save it anywhere else and I hadn't.

Any thoughts or ideas?

I go to Control Panel, Tools, Options, File Locations.  When I click Modify I can indicate a different folder for saving Word documents, but I can't change the location "Nathan."  Also, any change I make just adds the new extension to the existing.  Example:
C..\Nathan\Documents    Modified to:  C..\Nathan\Documents\Documents, etc.  Whatever I choose is added onto the existing location
I hope I've explained this clearly.  Any Word 2003 experts out there who can help on this one?  It's really got me puzzled.  Thanks in advance.

Wondering if someone might know what's happening here...

I've been working on a document in Word 2003 that's around 100 pages long. It's set up with headings from which I could automatically generate a table of contents. It also had page numbers and referencing using EndNoteX1. Everything was fine, until today when I tried to open the document.

The TOC, page numbers, and EndNote referencing are all gone. In place of the TOC is : {TOC\O "1-3" \H \Z \}. Similarly for page numbers and references.

Oddly, when I just cut and paste the above {TOC etc} from my Word document into this document, the full table of contents appeared in this box! (so I deleted it and typed the code manually). So, Word seems to know what I want it to do, but it won't display it...

Also, to work on the document today, I e-mailed it to another computer and everything worked fine. Then when I sent it back to this computer, it lost the TOC, page numbers and references again.

Anyone have any idea of what's going on???

Thanks in advance

Was it a previously-created and saved Word document that you opened and then worked on and then forgot to save?
Was it a newly-created Word document that you forgot to save?

Two people use my computer, Nathan and Michael. Both are Administrators. When Nathan is logged on his Word 2003 documents are saved in: C:\...Nathan\Documents.

When Michael is logged on, his Word 2003 documents are also saved in: C:\Nathan\Documents.

Obviously, the way it should work is Nathan's Word documents should be saved under his log-in and Michael's documents should be saved under Michael's log-in. I can't make that happen. Here's what I've tried so far:

I go to Control Panel, Tools, Options, File Locations.

When I click Modify I can indicate a different folder for saving Word documents, but I can't change the location "Nathan." Also, any change I make just adds the new extension to the existing. Example:

C..\Nathan\Documents Modified to: C..\Nathan\Documents\Documents

just an example. Whatever I choose is added onto the existing location

I hope I've explained this clearly. Any Word 2003 experts out there who can help on this one? It's really got me puzzled. Thanks in advance.

A:Can't set document location for individual users in word 2003

Michael does not have his own login, Like you and the other user have. You can confirm this by going to C:\Users. Is there a Michael user? If not, Go to Start/Control Panel/User Accounts and create a new user profile for Michael. This will create a new Documents folder under Michael's user name. Log out of your user profile and log in as Michael. Open Word up go to Tools/Options/File Locations. Make sure the default Save location is C:\Users\Michael\Documents. Michael can set his own password for his login.

Hi New here

I am currently having a problem with Word 2003, when I drag a file from say desktop or any folder in to a word document.
The contence of the file gets imported into the word document I am writing.
All I want it to do is appear as a icon with in the document. I am able to convert that part of the document by doing the following.

-Right click on document which was imports.
-Then Document Objects > Convert > (Tick) Display as Icon.

This will make the document which was imported to appear as the icon.

Know the real question how do I set this function "Display as Icon" with so I don't have to always do the steps above?

Is there a patch or something in Group Policy that can be done or Registry Key change.

I would be gratefully thank full for any help

Hi everyone, this is my first post so pardon any mistakes...

I need to create word documents for our product line skus that contain descriptions, pricing an an image of the product. I would like to take the information from our database, create a document for each item and then save the document to a unique name (product#), all done automatically. My thought was to use mail merge for the text fields but I don't know if I can merge images as well. I came across an add-in for word called OnMerge that claims it can automate the merging of images.
My question is multi-part:
1) Has anyone done this using Word 2003 (on XP or W2003 server) ?
2) Has anyone accomplished this using other programs ?
3) Has anyone used OnMerge with Word to create documents as described above ?

Any information that will point me in the right direction would be much appreciated.
