EMET 5.52 DEP and CFG Interaction (Old InstallShield 6 Setups)

Q: EMET 5.52 DEP and CFG Interaction (Old InstallShield 6 Setups)

I have been investigating a setup crash issue on one of our Windows Server 2012 R2 servers. The affected patient is an InstallShield 6 setup from a Siemens SCADA software.
We had a suspicion that EMET might be involved from the get-go thus uninstalling EMET from the impacted server. The crash, however, has been remaining thus leading me astray to suspect other policy/security settings to be in play.
After a long and tedious research on a lab VM using snapshots and step-by-step approaches I've been able to find the culprit:
Telling EMET (by GPO for example) to use System DEP in opt-out mode (which would also be the Server OS default setting) two things happen:
1. Expected: The system control panel DEP setting is enforced to be on for all programs/services (aka BCD NX OptOut option)
2. Unexpected: EMET service switches the last four bits of "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Kernel\MitigationOptions" from 2 to 1 (0b0001).
Thus on operating systems of kind Windows 8.1+ the kernel-level DEP (as part of Control Flow Guard, CFG) will be enabled, too. However,
MitigationOptions will not be reset on uninstall of EMET! Thus even when turning off DEP the old way (System Control Panel/BCD NX) you will still have DEP enabled on an OS level. Even the System Control Panel option does only change the BCD
NX option but leaves the kernel settings alone.
The CFG/kernel DEP seems to impose stricter checks because with BCD NX at OptOut but CFG DEP at OptIn the InstallShield setup still works. But as soon as CFG DEP is at OptOut and the server restarted the setup fails referring to IKernel.exe.
To some extent I can see the reasoning behind a restricted manipulation of the CFG Registry options but this is a hell-of-a-trap on earlier OS' that do not yet have manageability/PowerShell cmdlets for CFG! And I couldn't find any mention of this specific
behavior in the EMET 5.52 User Guide.
Thanks go to 0xdabadd00's
EMET 4.1 Uncovered Guide which explains the structure of MitigationOptions in detail and more.
According to
https://blog.ensilo.com/documenting-the-undocumented-adding-cfg-exceptions there should already be an infrastructure for CFG exclusions in place - but not exposed/no
UI in OS like Windows Server 2012 R2?
Thus if you want to revert back to the OS install defaults of NX OptOut but CFG DEP set to OptIn you can only resort to manipulating the Registry directly (and best only manipulate the bits required). In the EMET GPO you can only set System DEP back to "Not
configured" because any other option would manipulate the BCD setting and MitigationOptions in unfavorable ways.
As an aside there is still no way (or not a way I know of) to exclude such subprocess/DLL calls like InstallShield's setup.exe does from DEP. I tried adding IKernel.exe to the exclusion list with no success.
And to conclude this journey to security wonderland - CFG DEP also overrides the BCD NX setting. Even having BCD NX set to AlwaysOff CFG DEP set to OptOut still works and crashes the setup.
Does CFG replace the NX option? Is there even DEP active when only the NX option is set accordingly? Intriguing questions.
Anyone being able to elaborate more on this/give some backgound would be welcome. The workaround and situation is clear now but the whole interoperability and side effects are awkward.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

unable to launch any InstallShield based packages on my Win2K machine, including setup.exe and PackageForTheWeb Stub files

Basically, after launching a setup or a package, the busy cursor appears for a second, and setup.exe is visible in the TaskManager, but nothing else happens. Very frustrating! I have tried logging on as different users (incl administrator) and trying various InstallShield-based installs ... but to no avail. None work.

Couldnt find any info on Microsoft or InstallShields website either. Wondering if it might be a version compatibility issue or perhaps win2K InstallSheild kernel is corrupted ... I'd even settle for a way to upgrade/re-install its Common Files (aside from a full Win2K install)

Any help appreciated

Since deploying EMET 5.2 via group policy and taking standard application default values exept for EAF on IE 11 (So IE opens in Windows 10), I have an issue with Photoshop opening on a users Windows 7 Professional workstation.  The event log
error is:
Faulting application name: Photoshop.exe, version:, time stamp: 0x4d9d8cbc
Faulting module name: EMET.DLL, version:, time stamp: 0x5503c3e4
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00066011
Faulting process id: 0x2154
Faulting application start time: 0x01d0df38094e67d3
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Photoshop.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\AppPatch\EMET.DLL
Report Id: 4b0b4387-4b2b-11e5-a484-90b11c6babbe

What would be the first thing you would change in EMET under the group policy to take off of Photoshop.exe?  Would it be EAF, because that fixed IE 11.  Would it be something else?  There's multiple things it could be, but whats the most common
protection that may solve this so I don't spend hours updating group policy, gp refreshes and testing?

We have EMET 5.2 installed and configured via Group Policy.  I'd like to upgrade the domain GPO to the latest EMET 5.5 ADMX then follow with removal and upgrade from EMET 5.2 to 5.5 on all workstations.  During the time frame where EMET 5.2 is
still running will the EMET 5.5 ADMX settings work correctly on those workstations that have not been upgraded yet?  Also, it is unclear to me if there is any need to use the 5.5 conversion tool if all of our settings are pushed via Group Policy, is there
any need to use the conversion tool in this case?

We have a GPO called EMET Deployment and Configuration.  Inside this GPO is a computer configuration > assigned applications, EMET 5.2.  Can I just repoint this to EMET 5.5 and will clients automatically update at next GPO refresh interval?
Or will they update at next restart?
In here is also under Administrative Templates > Windows Components > EMET there are some application configuration, default action and mitigation settings, default protections for popular software, reporting, system aslr, system dep and system sehop
GP elements defined.  Will these elements automatically be configured in EMET 5.5?  I installed EMET 5.5 on my workstation and when I click on the group policy element and click on the apps button it just doesn't seem right.  It shows a list
of the following
** devals.
Also when I refresh the main EMET 5.5 screen it doesn't show that any process is running EMET.  I'm in chrome now and that I know should be running in EMET based on "Default Protections for Popular Software" set to enabled in the group policy.

Hi All,

I created .msi file with InstallShield X Basic MSI package.
I used custom dialogs and custom actions. For this requires InstallShield Scripting Engine to run this file. And This file I got ISScript101.zip. This is manual way of installing the scripting engine.
This is working fine on systems where ISScript engine has been installed,

But I need to avoid manually installing scripting engine, ISScript engine should be installed as part of MSI installation.
I need to include .msm file with this package. I included installshieldscriptingengine.msm file with version 10.01.

But it's not working, when i am installing this package in, any Windows Operating System.

What should I requires to do? How to proceed?

If the Compaq site does not have Chipset drivers, or only has old ones, you can download them from Intel's website.

Hello - I have an XP Pro desktop, 1gB RAM, AMD 3400+ proc, large disk 20% full. A few days ago, out of nowhere, the thing BSODs on me with a 7D stop. Rebooted and after the post, but before the XP load up (green caterpillar) it BSODs again with a 7D. The C drive is less than 6 mo old - it's a Seagate 500 gB SATA.OK, I grabbed my XP Pro SP3 disk and attempted to get to the Recovery Console to work out what I thought might be an MBR or an NTLdr problem because it wasn't even starting an XP load. Booting from the CD went up to the point that Windows is starting but then a a screen yielding "No hard disk drives could be found, hit F3 to exit". Hmmm. I grabbed a copy of BartPE and that found the C:\ drive just fine. Ran some other disk health/exercise utils and those professed that the disk was fine. Back to the XP Pro boot disk and again, no hard disk drives. To make a long story short, I disabled the SATA process in BIOS, rebooted with the XP Pro boot disk. Ireally wanted a repair install, instead I got not a repair install but a complete install. I tried this over and over. So, I decided to plunge through it while selecting the option to preserve the file structure. After the install went through, I revisited the BIOS and turned on SATA support. It's back in business. Now, I'm faced with a boot screen that offers two "copies" of XP Professional. The second one BSODs with 7D. The first (newest one) boots and works fine. Bu... Read more

Hi. . .

Have any of these apps completely failed to install?
Are there log files anywhere from any installation that behaves as you describe?

This could be a case of lack of sufficient space in your temporary folders.

Let's try this first. . .

Download CCleaner:

CCleaner v2.04.543 download

Install CCleaner.

Is your user account an administrator? If not, logoff & logon to one that is.

Run CCleaner - 'Analyze' ONLY- with only 1 box checked:

SystemTemporary Files

Run 'Analyze' and let me know of results, please - specifically the amount of space that would be freed.

It's never at the exact same place, it's more like after a certain time. I was wondering if this was due to a virus or because of a system file being corrupt or both. I can run normal programs, I just can't seem to install anything. I had to install Guitar Pro on another computer and save the files to disk and bring them back over. So if anybody could help that'd be great, thanks.

This began a couple days ago at random, no major hardware/software changes or updates that could have caused it. I booted up my computer from normal and I was unable to interact with anything. Whether it was just a normal internet window, game, or the icons on the taskbar...I wasn't able to click on anything. I found out that if I would click the side mouse buttons of my mouse on the window or area I wanted to interact with that it would allow me to do so normally. It would only work for that one area though and not anything else.

Thus far I've ran virus/malware tests, checked health of hard drives, verified temperatures are normal, and completely reinstalled Win10 however it is still occurring. Last I reinstalled it worked normally but after a little while (couple hours of use maybe) the issue came back. This leads me to think it is some type of software interaction that is somewhat suppressing my mouse.

If anyone has any idea I'd appreciate hearing it, I've never dealt with an issue like this.

I just picked up a DVD-RW/CD-RW drive. I already have a DVD/CD-RW drive. I want to install both drives and I am not sure which drive should have the analog sound cable plugged in - the DVD/CD-RW or the DVD-RW/CD-RW drive?

Is there any way to connect an analog cable to both drives, so I can use either drive to play DVD movies? The mother board only has one CD-In plug.
Right now, I have the sound plugged into the DVD/CD-RW drive so I can only use the DVD-RW drive to burn DVD's.

Which would be a better choice to have the sound if only one can be plugged in?

A:Multiple DVD and CD-RW drive setups

If you're running Windows XP, you don't need the audio cable at all, you can throw it away. You also shouldn't need it to play DVD movies, the sound is sent over the IDE cable and decoded by the DVD playing codec on your computer (e.g. PowerDVD, WinDVD).

Hey all,

Title sums up the issue neatly. Over the past 3 days I've had my PC shut off at seemingly random intervals. Either when playing games, browsing the web or just sitting idle. The duration that my computer on is < 5 hours at any give time. Cleaned out the tower, using compressed air, checked to make sure all fans were running. Tracked temp with CPUID Hardware Monitor, didn't see anything out of normal (synced up with tower temp display right at a shut down. GPU around 65 and CPU in the low 60s.)

Specs - Custom Build
Running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. 6.1 Build 7601.
Mother Board - GA-970A-D3
32 gigs DDR2 Ram
AMD FX-6100 6 core (not overclocked)
AMD Radeon HD 6870 (single)

So here's what I've done so far;

Ran Anti-virus (Avast!) and Malware-bytes in normal and safe mode. Both came up clean.
Did a scan disk to check for disk errors, no errors found.
Searched for any blue screen logs to see what was wrong, no issues.
As I stated before, cleaned out the tower.
Checked all of the power cables, all secure.
Rolled back my drivers to last restore point, issue persisted.

If you need anything else please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I work as an IT support tech at a college and the computers on campus have XP, Vista or 7 on them.

We use WinToFlash to make bootable USB install drives for speed and convenience. Right now, I have to carry around 4 USB drives:XP Install USB
Vista Install USB
7 Install USB
Hiren's BootCD

I was curious as to if it would be possible to somehow get all of those onto my 32GB USB drive and be able to choose which OS to install or boot to Hiren's BootCD.

Seems to me like I could do some kind of partitioning with it.

Any ideas?

A:[SOLVED] XP, Vista And 7 Setups On One USB

1st, Hiren's is warez - steer clear unless you have (proper) licenses for the 30-odd non-free (and non-redistributable, for that matter, making it borderline warez even if you *do* have licenses) programs on that disc.

2nd, yes - it's actually really easy to do with Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT 2010):
cluberti.com ? MDT 2010 and deployment from a USB key
You can use MDT to install XP SP3, 2003 SP2, Vista, Server 2008, Windows 7, and Server 2008 R2 (and applications, and drivers, and do things based on model type, etc.... you can actually get really crazy if you'd like ). You just need to download and install (preferably onto a Win7 machine) the Win7 WAIK (and SP1 supplement if installed on Win7 SP1), MDT 2010 Update 1, and have the sources to the apps and OSes you want to install via MDT.

You can install via ISO, USB key, over the network, or via PXE boot (which is of course 100% network driven) based on what is created via MDT.

This problem just began happening a few weeks ago with Explorer 8. I try to go to the Netflix sign on screen and a window pops up that says Explorer has stopped working. I downloaded Explorer 9 but the same thing happens. Netflix works fine with Firefox or Safari from my PC. I am using Vista 64 bit.

A:Explorer 8 or 9 interaction with Netflix

Go into the Advanced section of your Internet Options and make sure the proper allowances are checked in the Multimedia Section. If they are, then use the defaults under Security.

I hope someone can help as I am doing my nut !

I am using Office Home & Student 2007 and am compiling a set of business accounts.

I have a master in Word 2007 with most of the textual matter. I have an Excel 2007 spreadsheet with 4 worksheets which I want to paste into the Word document. I find that I can cut and paste one spreadsheet OK but when I try to paste another worksheet I can only get the option "Paste as nested table."

I have tried doing the same operation with a blank Word document and find I can cut and paste the same 4 worksheets with no problem at all.

HELP !!!!!!!!!!!

A:Interaction of Word and Excel

In Word, when you click on the area on the page that you're trying to paste your second table into, do you see the Table Tools menu appear at the top of your screen?

If so, then what's happening is you're inadvertently trying to paste a table into a table (otherwise known as a nested table).

You might want to try clicking around your document until you find a place where the Table Tools menu doesn't appear and try pasting it there.

Let me know if that works.

Using WinXP, SP3. Have the internet activity icon in the taskbar. Just today have noticed that it is almost constantly active. How can I find out what program(s) are using the connection? Also notice that in the "Users" tab of Task Manager there is a "Session" column and I'm listed as "Console." Don't recall ever seeing this before.

Appreciate any advice/guidance/info.

For the past few months, I've been using XPs power management features (standby and hibernate) on my PC which uses an ASUS motherboard with Athlon processor. For the past few weeks, I've been having system failures where the system rebooted with no error indication. After trying many things, including new BIOS level, new memory, new processor, the problem was finally traced to a defective power supply. So, now I'm running solid again - but - can't use Standby or hibernate modes anymore. The proper features are activated in the BIOS, but XP doesn't seem to recognize that. For example, when I go to START - TURN OFF COMPUTER, the Standby option is greyed out and can't be selected. When I hit the power off button on the PC, that doesn't trigger standby mode either as it did before. I don't understand the interface between XP and the motherboard/BIOS on these features, so don't know where to look for the problem. I suppose that the motherboard might have been damaged by the bad power supply, but maybe I'm just missing something simple - any ideas?

First thing I would look at is if ACPI is reported to be "working properly" in Device Manager.

I live in Austin TX and have TWC as my ISP. I have a laptop whose lan port does not work and hence my internet connection goes through my wireless adaptor to my wireless router which is wired to the TWC modem.

My problem is that often times when I go to www.google.com or "google.com" (or any website) it throws are error page "Page can not be displayed". And often times it takes me to "Domainhelp.search.com" or some such site which is run by roadrunner. If I continuously hit F5 then it will come up.

And then there are occasions when in one attempt i will go to WWW.google.COM, but on clicking "gmail" I get to see page can not be displayed message.

So internet access has become a pain now.

If I call the TWC helpdesk they ask me to connect to the modem directly which I can not do so and they say that they are not responsible for the problem as it can not be reproduced if I connect the laptop directly to modem.

any ideas??

Look in the Windows Event Viewer and see if Windows is logging any errors. You can also open Task Manger and check the cpu usage and view the processes to see if any are using a lot of cpu.

Hey guys, I was just doing some chatting in FB, while doing that, a cmd appeared twice, the only opened programs are, chrome, winrar, task manager, CPUID Hardware monitor, explorer.exe, and bandicam, luckily I kept the task manager opened but I didn't find anything, I ran RogueKiller and found nothing on processes. Any idea on what would that be? Virus? Trojan? Malware? Or other stuff?

A:A batch file opened without my interaction

Sounds like installed malware.
So you need download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from www.malwarebytes.org
Then restart your PC into safe mode and run full system scan
And attach your report scan results.

I might be way off base with this but thought I'd throw the question out there and see what you think.

When a new OS is released (such as W7 from Vista, or W8/8.1 from W7 and so on, then OS specific software often doesn't run correctly. I've experienced that with backup software. What worked with W7 wasn't suited to W8.1, and that in turn would not run with W10.

Now W10 is radically different from all that has gone before because its very foundations can be altered with new builds that are appearing and that will continue to appear in the future.

Would it therefore be reasonable to think that software that is designed for W10 now has no guarantee of performing in the future ? I'm thinking specifically of the kind of program that out of necessity has to integrate itself with the OS at a fundamental level (such as imaging programs and security suites).

Any thoughts ?

A:W10 and its future interaction with 3rd party software.

I would not think so. My guess is that software that's designed for 10 will continue to work for some time to come.

Something that has been bugging me, is that when installing a program, the setup wizards and their subwindows open in the background, rather than on top as is normal. Being absent minded, I will sit and wait for several seconds, until I get impatient and look at the taskbar to see new tabs, which I must select to bring the setup on top. How can I set the OS to always bring these on top by default?

I have the same problem too. I think it's a Win 7 bug. Just keep an eye on your taskbar when installing programs I guess. At least til they release a fix or service pack that fixes it.

I have a tri-level Master-Detail Form. Data block ORDERS is the master for data block ORDER_DETAILS. ORDER_DETAILS is the master block for data block ORDER_DETAILS_TOPPINGS. I'm creating a RDBMS for a mock pizza company. The only time the table ORDER_DETAILS_TOPPINGS is used is in the event a pizza gets ordered. I would like to create a POST-CHANGE trigger attached to the PROD_ID attribute of the ORDER_DETAILS datablock that will change all the visible properties in the ORDER_DETAILS_TOPPINGS data block to "no" in the event the the PROD_ID is not a 5 (a PROD_ID of 5 equates to a pizza). There's no sense in the user having access to the portion of the form containing toppings information if they are ordering a soda. A copy of my ERD can be found here . (Warning: that link is not 56k friendly).

A:Oracle Forms DataBlock Interaction

I suppose you have many blocks in your forms. Two of thems are
B_ORDER_DETAILS and B_ORDER_DETAILS_TOPPINGS. And that they and a master-detail relationship. In the POST-CHANGE tirgger of item PROD_ID in block B_ORDER_DETAILS should include the codes similar to the followings:
v_item_name varchar2 (100);
v_last_item varchar2 (100);
IF v_item_name = v_last_item THEN
v_item_name := GET_ITEM_PROPERTY ('B_ORDER_DETAIL_TOPPINGS.' || v_item_name, NEXTITEM);
IF v_item_name = v_last_item THEN
v_item_name := GET_ITEM_PROPERTY ('B_ORDER_DETAIL_TOPPINGS.' || v_item_name, NEXTITEM);

Hope this can help!
