Win 8 Questions

Q: Win 8 Questions

Mod Edit:  Split From http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/556136/is-it-still-possible-to-install-win-xp/ - Hamluis.
I decided to do a fresh install of Windows 8.1 but got nervous about it so I decided to do a fresh install of Windows XP Home Premium on my other old laptop first. This was to gain a bit of experience and also to ensure I have a working PC in the event of a glitch in the fresh install of Windows 8.1 - just wanted to be sure I could continue to get work done in the interim if something went wrong. However, doing a fresh install of XP turned out more problematic than I thought, for the following reasons:
I had no CD - never did. Neither Compaq nor Circuit City gave me one. I lost the restore media (if I ever created it back in 2004 or so).
I spent a lot of time researching slipstreaming an install including all the service packs but could feel confident in none of the sources of the software on the web nor in my ability to properly follow the processes for slipstreaming
I spent a lot of time researching sources on the web for the straight XP OS (without the service packs) but none gained my trust
There is conflicting info out there about whether it is necessary to install SP1 and then SP2 before installing SP3
I finally decided the answer was that going straight to the SP3 service pack was the path I would try but could not find a trusted source of SP3
Microsoft site has SP3 on it but the web page includes statements intended to scare non-IT-geek consumers (like me) away from using it. After some nail-biting and failing to find other solutions, I decided I would just try to use what Microsoft offers and see if I could pull it off. If not, I might have to start all over again.
How I Moved Forward
Note that, first I backed up any files I wanted to ensure remained safe from disaster. I also re-partitioned my HDD, reducing the size of the C: drive to be only a dozen or so Gigs larger than the total used space on the disk. In this way, I could create a ISO backup of the partition and keep its size to a minimum. I also downloaded all the applicable drivers from the HP site.
For the XP installation media I wound up deciding to try using the i386 folder that has been on my laptop from the start. Sites on the web mention that the OS is often on the HDD and that all the necessary files are in this folder. To initiate an install one has only to click a single file - specifically the winnt32.exe file. Now, this install method does not format your HDD (which is one thing I had wanted to do in order to start completely fresh). But I decided to see if it would work and provide me a sufficient performance boost without reformatting.  It worked for me.
Note that the process did NOT allow me to place the install on the C: drive. Makes sense since the install requires info from the existing files on the C: drive in order to install the fresh OS. So I'm REALLY glad I had created a new partition on the HDD. Formerly the HDD was just one 60GB partition labeled "C:"
The next challenge was to get SP3 installed. This meant downloading the SP from Microsoft, burning the ISO file to a CD, installing an ISO image reader on the machine, and, I thought, spending lots of time trying to figure out how to install SP3 on a single machine (since the download is intended for IT professionals installing on multiple machines over a network). As it turns out, there was NOTHING remotely complicated about the install. It's clear Microsoft is intentionally scaring consumers toward upgrading to Windows 8 rather than attempting to complete a fresh XP install.
A challenge I had not anticipated was trying to use the included IE6 browser to install Avast Antivirus and to perform other internet-related tasks. The problem is that lots of sites cannot be rendered on IE6.
Solution: Upgrade to the best version of IE that will run on XP. Problems: I had a lot of trouble determining which version could be installed effectively. Also, I could not reliably find a source for IE8, for example.
Solution?: Install Chrome. Problem: The Chrome download would not work under IE6.
Solution: Install the latest version of Firefox which then allowed me to install Chrome. This worked. I won't use IE6 on the machine at all. This will prevent me from even considering using Microsoft's Bing as my search engine. <One very stiff middle finger raised toward Redmond>.
I installed Avast without a hitch and ran a full scan - no problems.
Today I read an XP thread on this forum with a post highly recommending running the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) provided by Microsoft and running it monthly. I readily found the page with MSRT for XP, downloaded and installed. Began a scan. A few minutes later, got a BSOD with a full screen of suggested actions the first of which was to shut down and restart to see if it happens again. It hasn't but I haven't yet tried to run the MSRT again. Meantime, the laptop is working just fine.
What Can Still Go Wrong?
Activation: Some have complained on the web that they have had trouble "activating" the OS (which has to be done within 30 days of installing). I have not yet attempted this. I suspect I won't have issues since I used the i386 folder that was placed on the machine by HP. So there shouldn't be any mismatch between the software's ID and the motherboard. Keeping my fingers crossed. [Update: Activation took 30 seconds via the internet].
MSRT might fire up and cause another BSOD. If so, I may uninstall MSRT (if I can) and just rely on Avast for protection. Note that the primary use for this machine is as a music server. Spotify will be the almost the only web property accessed via my WiFi. I will do no email, messaging, nor social media on the machine.
I hope others find my experience useful. Your mileage may vary.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Win 8 Questions

allbenatt, thanks for sharing your experience!
There was a long running XP Topic where the OP, also with an HP computer, could have used your solution. Actually the way you installed, being it was to another partition, it was formatted prior to you taking this action, so it didn't really need it again. Too, all OS's requires some type of formatting of the partition to install, in this case it was likely NTFS. No, it wasn't the type of XP format that would take hours to complete on some larger drives, which was probably more secure of an erase than today's quick formatting, but one was one.
So how did the OS install process go? Install to the partition next to it? I'm curious about this, and may try it on my last XP computer just to see it in action. It's 60GB in size, but I could shrink the actual XP partition to 25GB or so, and there's a Recovery partition at the end. However, many doesn't have that, could have once been there, but was removed, tempting to some because in 2003/04, 40GB HDD's were the norm. Actually the one I have came with that size one, but I replaced it with a 60GB 7200 rpm one, the OEM one ran at 4200 rpm (or in that range).
That SP3 download of over 300MB, I've had that on CD since 2010. Anytime I install XP these days, seems like Windows Update won't connect w/out it (an error message will show). Installing SP3 fixes this. Though here as of late, haven't done much XP installing, other than some virtual machines for me to tinker with.
Had you updated after installing SP3, IE8 would have been among the first set of updates offered, though I've also seen it for download in the past, an IE8/Bing combo for XP, and here at FileHippo, where I get a lot of software. If installing to a fresh, unupdated XP, it will fetch some needed updates, including the MSRT, and install. Reboot & finish updating.
So if I could free up 25-30GB in space, and format the partition, I can install XP fresh?
Finally, can the original one be safely deleted after install, than with a partition tool, move the new XP install to the left?
I'm asking these questions because many has torched XP installs, and if this would restore their OS's, would be fantastic.

1. Ran out of this space in my Q:Lenvovo - backup assigned partition.  14GB.  (My C: drive has 80GB free!) How can I fix this?  Is there a way to expand the partition without deleting it first?  Does Lenvovo or Microsoft or SSD manufacturer have a tool to do this where you just enter the amount you want to expand a partition to and it will adjust the other partition accordingly?  If not; I cannot delete the Q:Lenovo drive using file explorer or disk cleanup utility.  How do I remove at the original backup?  When I go to disk cleanup it shows blank the files; so it is a hidden file or subdirectory.  I even try signing on as System Administratin but forgot the password I created, it been so long ago and never use it.  LOL!   If I cannot do any of this:  There is an option to do a Windows 10 refresh but can you redirect it to a new SSD from the existing SSD? 2. Looking to get a new SSD but in NVMe configuration. a. Does my L450 support NVMe boot up? What type of NVMe does my Thinkpad support?  I thinking of getting the Samsung 860 Evo.b. Is connecting the new NVMe and running transfer SSD software the Windows 10 will recognize the drives and do the transfer?    Serial NumberF0ATPKGPart Number: 20D5503800 Thanks for any help you can give in this matter!

I have a
HP Pavilion dv7t-1000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC
64bit with Windows Vista Home premium
Recently I had a friend take it and wipe it to start fresh.
when I got it back it is still pointing to a bizarre path..?? (which is one of the reasons I wanted to start fresh. It points to:

%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files (x86)\CyberLink\Power2Go;%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\

why would this be the case? When I got it back I see that some things like my extra monitor was already installed.. (Before I even hooked it up??) and some folders I had renamed example folder.OLD was still here. (and many other things that lead me to believe it did not get formatted correctly. (and could still have virus?)
He used my factory disks. (which I do have)
can anyone advise me on what is going on?
thanks so much!!

A:Environment Variables questions and format questions

I've had a bunch of HP machines. But I never used the restore. I'm not sure if it formats or just installs over what's there. It may leave files and folders that are in subfolders of programs that come bundled with the machine assuming it's data or something. The path looks fine to me. That %SystemRoot% stuff is just a way to use environment variables in case the system is not installed on C:\Windows.

If you really just want the OS and not the bundled software see the threads about ISO download for Vista. You can evaluate for 90 days perfectly legally. There are also tutorials how to extend the evaluation by 30 days.

Hey guys, you might of seen a post or two about me not able to get our domain to use GPO's, but its all fixed now. YAY !
(It was the DNS, incase anyone was interested)

but now i got a few questions, i'll start with:

1. Is there anyway to configure a client by just having them log onto the domain? e.g. Disable Security Center, Windows Messanger, Add a Registry hack. etc.

2. Is there anyway to view a list of all websites visited on the network with information, eg. Who was looking at it(which user), at what time. etc

3. Is there a way to record a list of all objects printed from our print server with information? e.g. User that printed it, time it was printed, how many pages, how many copys. etc.

4. Is there a way to delete start menu files/folders with a logon script?

5. I'm going to put "Deep Freeze" on the computers that are accessed and used by the public, but i've never used it, nor have any experience with it.
Does it cause any problems with normal operation of the computer? if anyone could give me some feedback on this, i'd love to hear it.

Also, is it possible to get more then just 6 Virtual Drives on a computer?

i mean, isn't there 23 possible drives?

Brand new user.

a. The new PC came with McAfee anti virus.
Should I use it ?

Is it as good as AVG, e.g., which I used on my old W7 PC ? Use them both ?

b. And, how do I turn on the "Defender" anti virus which I understand is part of
the W10 package ?

Would it interfere with McAfee or AVG ? How good is it ?

c. How do I turn on the Firewall; I'm assuming there is one like in W7 ?

Much thanks,

A:New W10 User Questions (Basic Questions, Please)

McAfee, AVG and Defender are all anti-virus programs and you should only run one. In fact Defender will get turned off when another one is installed.

Right click the Start button and select Control Panel.

Then select Security and Maintenance and under Security it will show your the status of the Firewall, Virus and Spyware and which program is running what.

Control panel also has links to Defender and Firewall.

That McAfee is a trial version and at some point you will have to buy it.

I have a Packard Bell P133, model D135. Eight megs of
RAM are on the motherboard. According to a search of
this model on a 'Memory' website, this model has FPM non-
parity memory. The machine had two 4-MB modules installed
when it was new in 1996, for a total of 16 MB at time of purchase.
Since then, I have added two 8MB modules to bring it up to
32MB. Two weeks ago, I replaced the two 4MB modules with
two 32MB FPM modules, which was supposed to bring it up to a total of 88MB. When I boot up, it only reads slightly over 81MB as passed....of course, on the System Properties 'General' tab, 80MB is listed. Can anyone tell me what might have happened to the other 8MB?

Another question: Would parity memory be compatible with
non-parity memory? I know from research, that most servers use parity memory...parity being described as a feature of
a module for error-checking. Would parity memory work OK with non-parity, but not the other way around? The reason I ask is, I have an opportunity to buy some used 72-pin, FMP parity modules at a good price, and I just wanted to know if the two (parity and non-parity) would mesh. I wanted to bring it up to the max for this model....136MB, providing the 8MB on-board memory is read. That was my own theory about the missing 8MB....that the on-board memory, for some reason isn't being read. Any thoughts on this?

Hey guys, just have a few questions in regards to Vista x32 vs x64 as well as Direct x10 issues when it comes to gaming.

First off - What benefits do I get by running Vista x64 as opposed to x32 when it comes to gaming. I bought Call of Duty 4 as well as Bioshock, and will be buying some of the new games coming out such as Assassin's Creed and Far Cry 2. Are any of these games 64 bit games?

Second off - Do I get any benefit playing a game made for DirectX 9 on a DirectX10 platform? Or are the graphic increases only visible in games actually made for DirectX 10? Again, are any of the games I listed above made to work with better graphics in DirectX 10?

Thanks guys!

A:32/64 bit questions & DirectX 9/10 questions :)

I discovered your inquiry while I was attempting to answer questions similar to yours.

This isn't much help but try reading about Epic Game's 'Unreal' game engine. I'm reading the article on wikipeadia about this game engine. This is the game engine used for Gears of War and Unreal Tournament.

Any way, it seems that if your running the game in a 64-bit environment like Windows Vista 64 the game will be in 64-bit mode.

It uses Directx 10 and Directx 10 also seems to be in 64-bit mode depending on weather Windows is in 64-bit mode.

In related news, it seems that the 'Unreal' game engine and the 'Source' game engine (Used for Half life 2, etc) are optimized to take advantage of multi-threading or in other words optimized for multi-core processors.

Anyway, see what conclusions you come to...I'll post an update as I learn more.

I recently purchased an Acer Aspire x1700. The operating system is currently Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I want to format and install Vista Ultimate 64-bit, but before I get started I wanted to ask some questions.

Firstly, I have already had issues with a different Aspire x1700. Last time I formatted one I was unable to track down all the necessary drivers. In the past, this had always been a fairly simple process, but this time it wasn't and I could not get the pc to detect the internet. I don't want to make the same mistakes this time.

I have been looking into a tool called Driver Collector. Has anyone used this and would you recommend it? My plan (which is fairly weak) is to use this tool to gather all my drivers on this system BEFORE formatting. Once the format is complete, I will simply install them again... and hopefully live happily ever after.

As a back up, I was going to create the recovery discs. I have never used recovery discs and I don't know much about them. Will I even be able to use them after a format? I am under the impression that they just restore the pc to a previous setting. I might be wrong, but the only reason I'm interested in these is because they might have the drivers on them.

Also, before I begin the whole formatting and installing process, I wanted to take a small precaution. This is just a theory so tell me if I'm wrong. If I installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit to the drive partition that does not have Windows already inst... Read more

This is my first post here

I have two annoying questions.

1. I created a site and my my flash banner's turning upside down on my IE and not on any one else's computer. Obviously there's something wrong with my IE, but I don't know what the problem nor the solution is. If you can help me I'd surely appreciate it.

2. I am trying to insert a excel document in Frontpage. It won't do it because I'm lacking a path to a certain file. When prompted to insert my XP disk and I do so, it can't find the fife! GRRRRR...*thwack* Okay, is it me, or is this just the way things are gonna go since I've upgraded?

I love XP, but ever since I've upgraded, I've run into some pretty strange problems. The OS itself, for me, is the best bar none; but there's a couple of sticky points that I need some help on.

If you need further details, I'd be happy to supply them to you (whatever it is that you need)....

I just uninstalled Norton and installed AVG.

AVG says that the next tests and updates will be on 12/21 at 8AM. Does that mean I need to be sure my computer is online then, or, if it is not, will the tests and updates take place when I do go online after that time?

AVG says about the rescue disk that it "enables you to scan and clean files on your computer in MS-DOS mode (at the command prompt). This is often necessary when removing virsues on computers which have sharing violations or insufficient user access rights. It is also useful when your computer's system areas have become infected."

My computer doesn't share with any other computer and I guess I have all the user access rights available. I presume that if my antivirus programs work right I don't have to worry about the system areas becoming infected.

So my impression is that, while there may be some remote chance of needing the rescue disk, it is indeed remote. Am I wrong about that?

The rescue disk program says the disk should be updated whenever AVG is updated. That seems like a lot of trouble. That's why the question above.

I have some questions about Spybot S & D?

1.) What is the Immunization feature? When I click on it, I get an info page that says among other things, "Perminently running a bad download blocker of IE." than it says, a preventative blocker to help install of bad downloads is installed. Than a check box is checked that says something about preventing bad downloads in IE. What does all this mean?

2.) How do I get the Guardian Feature enabled? I don't see it here.

3.) What is the warning message that I get when I click on the immunization feature? It says, something like, " 0 products blocked, 2000xxx+ protections possible, please immunize. But the disclaimer is that this feature just gives you added protection from what the program already offers.

This is a problem I got into a few months ago-I gave up. Here it goes again!
My computer is running XP home edition, plenty of memory, etc. I had some problems with the pre-installed Roxio cd writting software. After some research, I bought a product called ClickN' Burn--it generally works great. Part of the software package is a program from Veritas for DLA, or Drive Letter Access, I think. It is one of those programs that allows you to drag and drop to a re-writtable cd. I can't get it to work. I can't find any software updates anywhere. I get a general error message when I try to format a cd-rw and then when I turn off the computer, some program associated with Veritas hangs. The DLA program has been uninstalled for several months now, and the computer is generally working fine (except for some weird driver problem that crops up off and on).
Has anyone had any experience with Veritas or Clickn' burn under XP? Sometimes I think I should just uninstall the whole thing, bite the bullet and get Roxio CD Creator Platinum for about $100, but I am stubborn. Suggestions?

I've been writing about this elsewhere as part of a hacker thread, but thought I'd ask separately in a more specific way.

Starting yesterday, when I went online and my AOL AIM box (I have downloaded, and don't have AOL as an ISP) comes up, I get a message (asking me to accept) from AOL. It says my username is open "elsewhere". I clicked on the link for more info and it says that anything sent to my username will go to BOTH boxes. Wherever the other open one is.

I changed my username and deleted that one and it was fine from last night, during today, but late this afternoon when I went online, and the AIM box came up (new username) once again I got a message from AOL, that the NEW username was also open elsewhere.

I've run virus scans, (online ones recomended on this site) HOUSECALL and another (trojan) one, and nothing is infected.

I've run Spybot and Adaware.

I posted Hijack this log yesterday and it was seen as "okay".

Could the AOL thing just be something (a glitch) on their side?

It said it could be if I have AOL for a server, AND an AOL AIM box downloaded and both open, but as I said I don't have AOL for a server only the download.

I'm thinking someone got in my computer in some way, and is scanning to get my username/password. Is this possible?

A:Some questions about x64

Hello Alex,

Why do i have two Program Files folder?

I have Program Files, and Program Files x86..

Vista 64 bit can run both 32 bit and 64 bit programs. The C:\Program Files folder is for installed 64 bit programs, and the C:\Program Files (x86) folder is for 32 bit programs.

Oh, and when i maximize any window, my transparency goes away and it appears vista basic, but if i minimize i have the window transparency again...

This is normal in both the 32 bit and 64 bit Vista when a window is opened to full screen. For the 32 bit Vista, you can use the latest 1.1 beta 3 version of the free program VistaGlazz to have your Maximize window transparent with the Vista SP1 installed.

And why do i have that symbol of Take Ownership in front of some programs??

If you mean the shield overlay icon, then this means that that program will require UAC permission first to be allowed to run.

Hope this helps,

Hey can someone give me some advice on an ssd? as am thinking of buying a Kingston 64GB. and currently own one western digital green 1Tb and a Samsung 7200rpm hdd. here is my question:
If I install my OS on a 64GB ssd do I have to have to install all my programmes and stuff on the ssd or can I have it all on one of my larger hardrives? as I don't think a 64GB SSD will hold all my programmes and docs.

So the question is can I use the ssd as just an OS Boot drive?

And what would you say would be the best ssd out of crucial and kingston? I have noticed crucial ssd's go for a little more on ebay.
thanks in advance

A:SSD Questions

Yes, you can just have your OS on the SSD if you like, and keep your installed programmes on the 1TB - that is perfectly acceptable.

You can go about this in two ways:

1. Transfer your existing OS installation from the HDD to the SSD:
SSD - Install and Transfer the Operating System

2. Do a fresh/clean install:
Clean Install Windows 7

When you do a clean install to the SSD, be sure to physically unplug your 1TB Samsung until the installation is complete, to prevent some of the system files being installed to the HDD.

My own personal preference is Option 2.

I think the Crucial has a better performance and reputation than Kingston, hence the price.

Couple of NT questions I really need help with:

1) How do I change what programs startup when NT starts up? There were a couple of programs I had set to start when NT was started, and they've since been removed from my computer. Now I get annoying error messages. How do I get NT to stop trying to start them automatically upon starting up?

2) Is there a way to change the name of drives? My hard drive is partitioned - there was originally the C and D drives. I just installed a zip drive, and it has somehow become the D drive (D is now F). So, every time I try to run something (from a shortcut or the start menu) that used to be in D, it can't be found. I figure the easiest way to fix this would be to just change the name of the drive back to D. If there's a way, that is...

A:2 NT Questions

1) what is your email? I will send you an attachment to solve this one. Then put the files in the following folder: c:\<i>%windows root directory%</i>\system

ie if you are running NT most likely path is <b>c:\winnt\system</b>

Then choose START=>RUN and type msconfig then hit enter. Here you can specify what starts up. Be careful though, there is a lot that can harm your system in here too.

2) I am trying to remember for NT, as I am on 2000, but here goes....I believe it is in the following - START=>PROGRAMS=>ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS=>DISK ADMIN (i think, I could tell you if I had it in front of me). Here you can change drive letters, repartition, whatever you want. Just right click on the partition and choose your poison....

I am installing xp pro as an upgrade from 98se. when I am about 1/2 way through I get a warning saying that there is an attempt to wright a virus like exe. to c drive. I has Norton system works as my av program. any help would be great.

A:xp questions

Disable the virus protection. What is happening is that XP is modifying system files and Norton is catching it and telling you that it thinks a virus is modifying the Windows 98 install, when in fact the upgrade is modifying it.

I would also check and make sure that your version of Norton is compatable with XP. If not, then upinstall it.

I am running a query with very specific criteria, and I need to assign a value to all records returned that meet this criteria. I will then run a second query that has different criteria, and assign a second value to those records returned. Then, putting all of those records into the same database, this will allow pivot tables to be created and differentiate between the two custom values I have assigned.

My question is this: how do I assign a static (default) value to all records returned from a query? I need to do this in a query, as it will be a nightly automated process. Let's say this is my sample query below:

SELECT Cal_Dt, Order_ID, Customer_ID
FROM Order_Details, Customer_Details
WHERE Order_Details.Customer_ID = Customer_Details.Customer_ID AND
Cal_Dt = #1/1/2004# And Payment_Type = "MC" And Order_Num >= 25

Now, in addition to the 3 fields I have selected in my query, I want a 4th field with a value of "Silver" assigned for every record returned in this query.

A second question I have about this query is that I want to concatenate the values of Cal_Dt, Order_ID and Customer_ID. The problem is that the Cal_Dt field is a date/time data type and the Order_ID and Customer_ID fields are both decimal data types. The concat function of Redbrick Decision Server only works with character data types, so it won't concatenate the values for me. Is there a way to convert these data types to char/varchar so the concat function will... Read more

A:SQL questions

You can assign a variable to the recordset itself:

strSQL = SELECT Cal_Dt, Order_ID, Customer_ID
FROM Order_Details, Customer_Details
WHERE Order_Details.Customer_ID = Customer_Details.Customer_ID AND
Cal_Dt = #1/1/2004# And Payment_Type = "MC" And Order_Num >= 25

You can inject the "silver" in anywhere when you loop through all of the records.

To add the date into a concatenated string just format the date to a serial value. strMSC= DateSerial("Cal_Dt")&""& Order_ID &""&Customer_ID

This may not be the right forun, but I have three questions:

1. How do you expand Add/Remove Programs under Control Panel to show all programs such as Internet Explorer, etc

2. Also, MS Messenger use to greet me...now I am receiving no greeting..is there some box that needs to be checked/unchecked

3. How do you go about changing between half duplex and full duplex on a modem

Any assistance appreciated

A:3 Questions with XP

1. How do you expand Add/Remove Programs under Control Panel to show all programs such as Internet Explorer, etc

You cannot beyond clicking Add/Remove Windows Components, only shows a few items. Many Windows components such as Internet Explorer and Media Player are built-in to the OS, therefore, cannot be removed, which is why the governemnt is after Microsoft .

2. Also, MS Messenger use to greet me...now I am receiving no greeting..is there some box that needs to be checked/unchecked

MS Messenger can be removed using Add/Remove Windows Components. I would try installing it, reboot, and reinstall it.

3. How do you go about changing between half duplex and full duplex on a modem

It usually controlled by the protocol being used. TCP-IP is Full Duplex only. If you using a Async terminal emulator, such as HyperTerminal, it's controlled by the application.

Here some infor to explain half duplex:

It refers to the transmission of data in just one direction at a time. For example, a walkie-talkie is a half-duplex device because only one party can talk at a time. In contrast, a telephone is a full-duplex device because both parties can talk simultaneously.

Most modems contain a switch that lets you select between half-duplex and full-duplex modes. The correct choice depends on which program you are using to transmit data through the modem.

In half-duplex mode, each character transmitted is immediately displayed on your screen. (For this reason, it is sometimes call... Read more

History: I am working on a computer that was refusing to start up (I don't have the error message received). It wouldn't even go into safe mode. I was able to get into system recovery, but wanted to retrieve data first.

This morning when I started the computer to make sure I had the error message written correctly it wouldn't come up. Instead now it says "A disk read error occurred. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart. If I try to go into recovery, I get the message "File \minint\system32\biosinfo/inf could not be loaded. The error code is 4128
Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit.
This is a loop I am stuck in.

Now for the second part of the problem:
As I said before, I want to retrieve my data from the hard drive before restoring it. I have used an external hard drive reader before to retrieve data from a disk that was having problems. All I had to do was plug it into a working computer and it came up the same as a flash drive. I tried that this morning, but I am not finding the root where the files should be. Can anyone help me figure out how to get at these files?

1) Not that I would and certainly never have, but when ' others '
have utilized demo software/shareware for beyond the extended time limit, how do they do that? Where does the maker stick his/her mark? Registry or Data Files?

2) I just got my first cd-rw and the nero that came with it doesn't work as it should. When it tells me to select a recorder, all that will work is the image recorder. The other one, the ' one that allows cdrw to function; only gives ' software must be bundled with cdrw for this to work ' message. Bummer. The cdrw is the cheapest of them all, Optorite Cyberdrive, 39.95, so my question is which software should I try or buy. I've downloaded three, none of which are Roxio or Nero, but have yet to try one. Iomega's looks like a real honey, but no trial

1) Most people do this with a crack program and we won't go there on helping you locate one. Some programmers write it into a dll that is installed in a hidden location and is not removed when the program is uninstalled. Others do make a registry entry that isn't removed either.

2) I am not sure what your problem is. Detecting the recording device should be only done when the program is initially run. I am also not sure what you are referring to as "image recorder". I use Nero all the time without any sort of error or problem.

Just curious about this, in windows 98 with outlook express 6, when I'd send a link by clicking "mail, send a link" it would put the link in the email, but now that I'm using XP with OE6, I've noticed it sends the link as an attachment and right in my email it has a message that the link is attached. I really don't care for this at all is there anyway to change it back and get that message to stop appearing in my emails? Also in 98 when I'd open multiple windows, my toolbar at the bottom of the screen would just have them all going across so I could just click the box to switch to whichever window I needed to, but on XP after I get 6 windows open, they all go into one box on the toolbar and I have to click that box and pick one out of the list. I always have at least 7 windows open when I'm working, it can't be helped, but not being able to just see them all and click the one I need adds extra steps that I really don't need. Is there someplace to set that? All I'm seeing is settings to cascade or tile the actual windows, not in the toolbar. Thanks.

Grannysue You can tweak your taskbar, toolbar and keep more single windows open. I have had ten open at a time .Unlock the taskbar if locked then run your cursor down along top edge of taskbar near your clock and your resize arrow appears just resize up you will now see the time ,day, and date displayed and your taskbar will now be able to handle more open windows. The taskbar looks much different enlarged but this tweak works for people who like to work with more single windows open. Oh Yes remember to right click and check lock taskbar if you want it to stay this way . If not just expand it when your working , but to do this you must unlock the taskbar .first.
