Solved: Windows XP, Delay in response as typing or selecting

Q: Solved: Windows XP, Delay in response as typing or selecting

Hi all.

I come now with a new problem. I pretended for some time I did not care, but that is now making me pull the hair from my head.

I installed something (which I did not pay attention to at that time and I don't remember what it was) and too many other programs after that (programs I constantly use, and therefore I don't want to get rid of). If I roll back my computer to an earlier time to dismiss this problem, I would be uninstalling all those valuable programs I am talking about.

Since the first installation, when I select in excel (using the mouse), when I am typing in Word, Internet or whatever other program, things stop working. There is a delay in response. I type, but I don't see what is just typed on the screen, because the computer freezes undexpectedly, and then it comes with the whole thing at once. In the meantime, I could have made a mistake in typing, but because I couldn't see it right away on the screen, I cannot be sure if I made it, and have to wait until the computer 'defreezes' back and keeps working along.
The delay doesn't last too long, but it's frequent and recurrent. So it's always there. It is a pain in the neck, and I am being very decent to say it.

It is not the Ram, because I have plenty of it. It is not the speed of the chip, because my computer is not old. It is not a wrong installation of the programs I installed because everything works fine at the end. It is just that freaking delay that retards my work what bothers me.

What can I do? Start from where? Do I need any software to test for the internal condition of my computer?

I really hope I can get some help folks. Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a dell laptop running xp. when I select something there is a significant delay from when I click on the icon or whatever and when the computer actually highlights the icon and goes to the site or performs the selected function. I thought maybe it was a memory problem but upgraded memory and still have problem. I have uninstalled and reinstalled xp to no avail. I've done virus and spyware scans and found nothing. I've cleaned the hard disk and defragged. I'm starting to think it maybe a hard drive probem. any ideas?

I have an older dual core Windows 7 pc that I have been using as a file server. It worked fine until recently, when it started having little "freeze attacks". In Windows Explorer, when I would click on a file or folder, it would freeze up for a few seconds, then free up. If I then clicked on the folder again, it would highlight. When I would click on a different folder, it would freeze up again for a few seconds, then free up and allow me to click the folder. When frozen, the mouse pointer would still move around, but clicking on anything had no response.

I wasn't sure if this was Windows 7, hard drive, or other hardware issue, but I have a faster pc to take over the file server role, so thought I would re-build it and see if that solved the problem. I formatted a different hard drive, and installed Windows 7 on it from scratch. However, at the end of the install, when it re-booted to start into windows, it froze at the windows logo (logo stopped moving). I waited for 2 or 3 minutes, but nothing happened. I left it for a while and came back to discover that it was at the screen prompting for new user name, etc. I tried to continue, but when I type about 2 characters, it will freeze for 15 or 20 seconds. Then I can type two more characters, and it will freeze again. I can't even get the thing fully into windows with all the freezes.

I guess it's now obvious that this is not a Windows issue. I imagine it could be one of many different hardware issues.... Read more

Hello. My computer has 4 GB of RAM, Duo Core 5500 2.7 MHZ CPU. I have a 1GB 9500 GT Nvidia, Windows Vista. I play a game called Darkfall Online, and I am having an input device delay time. When I move my mouse in the game window, there is about a half second delay on my computer from when I move my mouse to when the in-game character reacts to it. Also, when I type, or do any kind of input in the game; there is the same half second delay time. The issue is not ping. When I run the game, it only consumes up to 30% of my CPU and 2 GB of RAM.

This issue does not occur outside of Darkfall, but does in some other games. When I crank the settings of the graphics up to the maximum, there is a half-second delay. When I turn the setting to minimum, there is the same half-second delay.

I cannot begin to describe how annoying this is. My computer is brand new, and the drivers are up to date according to the Vista Device Manager scans. Also, I have even updated the Graphics card driver from the manufacturers website. . I have an older computer with worse equipment on Vista, I have had it for years; and the delay does not occur on it.

I have tried changing mouses, and everything I can think of and the issue on the computer described originally is still not running properly in game!

Now, I am willing to provide any necessary information that I have not included here. I really want this resolved, but it really is a hard problem to find a fix to.

Thank you in advance for help, I really ... Read more

Hello everyone ! I have a slight problem with my wifes typing on web pages and that seems to be the only place it takes place does not happen in word or any other software installed just the world wide web. she is using IE 8 due to the fact she will not let me upgrade here system from XP so anyway whenever she starts hammering away over there in he corner the text input on the web page does not keep up with her input on the key board. She has to stop for 2 to 4 seconds and wait for her typing to appear on the screen . Have not had the chance to disable all add ons yet as she always seems to be there when I have a chance to work on her system. I have though run several virus scans and malware scans and so forth and so on but nothing really showing up to amount to anything. Everything goes in fine in word and whatever else she uses just seems to be the web . I hope I have been clear enough to explain the situation so if more info is needed I will do my best to offer and continue to research on.

This only happens in wikpedia. So I scanned with Malwarebytes and got a malware and quarantined it. After that the issue was gone. About a week ago the problem came back. But I don't know if it's malware again, because Malwarebytes and Avast couldn't catch it. Please help me get rid of this annoying problem.

This happens quite often and usually a reboot fixes the problem but I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this issue.

Once my laptop has been running for a while (day or two) I will notice that when I am pounding away at the keyboard typing there will be a delay until the characters actually show up. Sometimes I am 8-10 characters ahead of what is being displayed on the screen. It makes it real hard to understand if I have typed the correct letter/characters sometimes. If I go to tap the Backspace key a few times to delete it's delayed as well.

When I reboot the problem is gone. Very strange problem and I am sure it's a bug or something that causes a memory leak of some sort somewhere. Call me crazy... LOL!

Anybody else experience this?

I'm curious as to whether yer keyboard is a USB one. Could be the USB port is underpowered or something. You could try plugging your keyboard into another port (if it is USB). Do not plug it into a USB hub. Try plugging it directly into one of the rear ports on your computer.

I am on an XP2 home edition pc - toshiba satellite celeron. Within the past few days, I've had a terrible time with slow keystroke response. I first noticed this a month or so ago whilst in the MSN Spaces blog sites on just a few of the spaces that I frequented. Now, it seems to be every place (even here while I'm typing this). However, it doesn't seem to be a problem with MSN messenger, or Skype. I've run 2 different spyware apps (Spyware doctor & spybot search & destroy) and a full virus scan (avast). I did a restore back to June 13, prior to the Microsoft updates. Still the slow response is happening. I did install the Retrospect 6.5 backup software for the external Western Digital hard drive prior to having this problem. As of this moment, I have not uninstalled that - hoping that it is not the problem. Can someone help? TIA bbbbren

The problem I'm experiencing is a delayed response time quite often when I'm online and typing on a site such as this, Facebook, or any other site which requires key input. I also notice I cannot scroll my browser when this happens and may last 5 or 10 seconds. I have the issue no matter which brand of browser I use but I can't say for sure if it happens with other programs or not. CPU usage does not seem to spike during this time. I keep all of my software updated regularly.

I'm not sure how to go about troubleshooting this issue, but any help would be appreciated as it is really irritating when this happens.

Hello all. Hoping someone's seen this or has an idea. I've done plenty of Google searches, but I'm striking out so far...

I have a fast (DSL-speed wireless) connection that is functioning fine in all areas but one. If I enter a URL in IE on the address line, there is a "hang" that results in a delay before going to the website. The delay isn't minor; it's typically 1 to 3 minutes. From that point forward, everything, including subpages, loads fast (as expected).

But that's the only case I've found where this slowness occurs. If I choose an item from my "links" bar, or from my "Favorites", I get immediate response. Another example to further explain. If I go to "Walgreens.com" by typing "http://www.walgreens.com" at the URL address bar, I get the bad delay. But if I do a Google search for "walgreens", and select the first response from Google (i.e., I go to that same address), it's a fast (as expected) response. So it's definitely tied to the Address bar.

I've been running XP Home SP1. The problem just started about two weeks ago, and I had been slow about upgrading to SP2. My computer sits behind a hardware firewall, has regularly updated NAV running on it, and I've run Ad-Aware, SpyBot, and some other similar program (with no problems found). I've also upgraded to XP Home SP2, but the problem persists. The help screen in IE tells me I'm running IE version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519.

I just got this HP Pavilion x360 (the convertible laptop/tablet) last week, and I've been having troubles with the keyboard. On certain websites, such as this one, there is no typing delay. However, on Facebook, Facebook Messenger, and Word Online, the characters I'm typing DO NOT appear on the screen at the same time that I'm typing them. It either freezes for a second and then quickly inputs all of what I've typed, or it just takes a few seconds longer for each key I press to show up on the screen. I've checeked to make sure Filterkeys isn't enabled and that no extensions are running in the browser. This happens in both Microsoft Edge and Chrome. P.S. when I was registering for an HP support account, I just realized that the @ key and the " are switched. So shift+2 gives me an ", and shift+" gives me an @ sign. Please help! I really like the computer other than this horrible typing lag.

Hello there, this problem is not extremely important, so by all means, if someone else needs to be helped first, no problem.

When I open firefox 3 or the IE Explorer, and I procede to type in the search bar of any search engine or just the address bar there is a slight delay in when I type to when the typed shows up on the screen. Just wanted to know if there is any remedy to this situation.

Steps I have taken....

1. I have just rebounded from a devistating virus attack. Thanks to your forums and Simon I was able to get things cleaned up.

2. I am using clamwin as anti virus

3. I am always scanning my pc for malwar via spybot, ad aware and other such programs as well.

If you need a greater detail for what I have done in reguards to the virus there is probably a way you can link to my other posts in the other forum.

Let me know, and thanks again in advance.

I'm sure some of this problem is just my numbskull approach to how I've begun to develop and structure pivot tables in Excel 2000.

In pivot tables where you do (or don't) have page fields, but where you have a fairly small number of items that your want to variably select or filter, I know you can use the pulldown arrow and individually select the items that you want to include or exclude from your column or row results, using the checkboxes.

Is there any universal command that will allow you to comprehensively check or uncheck all the items under a row or column field, if say, you have 50 items, and you want to filter the results down to just one or two items? Again, you probably wouldn't have a situation like this with quite so many items being used in a data summary capacity, but I suppose it could happen and I just wanted to know if this capability was available in Excel.

Has anyone else had this problem. And if so, how might I get yahoo mail to accept letters typed as I type them?

Until I try to run a new task from the task manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL is the only keystroke-type command I know) Then everything starts appearing as if nothing was wrong. When I type online there is a huge delay between when I push the buttons and when they appear on the screen. My virus scans show nothing is wrong. (I use trend-mirco's firewall and virus scanning products and also use firefox and I don't know if trend-micro only works on internet explorer or not...) I tried defragmenting to try and speed up the typing ting but it did no good... I don't know what is wrong but I do know that I can't get the updates from the updates.microsort.com website even though they are in the trusted websites thing in internet explorer (which is what I used to try and get the updates because you can't get them through firefox) and every time I open the computer (even from stand-by) I get a message from trend micro telling me it is stopping unauthorized changes and that change is some sort of "program Library Injection" that has to be blocked about a hundred times in a minute for the first 2 to 5 minutes of the computer being on. Just started having problems with my internet access yesterday. Coincidentally (or not), I also downloaded software from the partypoker.net site the same day. I'm guessing that is what is causing the trouble. When I type, there is a significant delay and sometimes the keystrokes don't appear at all. I've gone through each step in the "Preparation Guide for use before posting a HijackThis Log" and the problem has improved but still seems present. I'd be very grateful for any help in solving the problem. I have a new Inspiron 6400 with WinXP Pro. I've got an Intel Core 2 Duo with 2gig of ram. A couple of weeks ago I noticed an extremely frustrating behavior. While typing in any program (Word, Outlook, Notepad, IE Explorer, even right now while I'm trying to type this) the cursor (not the mouse cursor, the text cursor) starts to slow down and even stop every few seconds or so. Then suddenly it will print out everything I've been typing all at once. It's like the cursor gets constipated every few seconds. It's extremely frustrating to type anything now on this computer. I contacted Dell support. They suggested doing a system restore back a couple of weeks. I did that, and it seemed like it was behaving regularly again. Then after McAfee and Windows Update finished re-loading their updates (that had happened during those 2 weeks) the problem was right back. I then tried disabling every feature in McAfee except the firewall, thinking all the realtime AV stuff was bogging it down. No difference. I looked at Windows Task Manager to see if any background processes were monopolizing CPU resources. Nothing stood out, except the large number of processes (about 60) going on. Not knowing what most of them are for, I didn't dare disable any. I have a sneaking suspicion that a recent Windows Update is to blame, but I don't know if anyone else is seeing this. I have an older Inspiron 6000 at work using WinXP Pro that is not behaving this way at all, and it's "up to date". I bough... Read more

I noticed that in IE 11 on Windows 8.1 that there was this slightly perceived typing lag when entering text in fields displayed in the browser. This lag would not be present in Chrome, Opera, and others... so that's what would make it noticeable. When you type fast, it is most noticeable, but not so bad as to obstruct typing or create errors.

However, now in Windows 10, the lag has increased. Painfully so. I find that with my typing rate, the keyboard input cannot "keep up" and I lose letters! I'd have to go back and correct works due to missing letters. I've resorted to keeping Textpad open and typing all my text there, then copy/paste into the browser fields. The different is very noticeable.

I've searched around and found a few scattered tips about dealing with this, but nothing seems to help. I have to believe there's a setting SOMEWHERE that is responsible. Or... is this a byproduct of Microsoft key logging?

When I input something with my keyboard, the touchpad/trackpoint doesn't accept any clicking for about ~0.5 seconds. Its a small delay but it is driving me insane. T460 laptop, Synaptics Clickpad V1.1 Things I've tried:-  Reinstalling drivers, and restarting laptop. Nothing changed.-  Turned palm rejection to minimum. This fixes an earlier problem where the mouse would stop moving with keyboard presses, but it doesn't affect the clicking delay.-  Went into the registry editor, found 'synaptics' under 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE' but couldn't find any variables that indicate a delay after keyboard presses. I'd really appreciate any help with this. ~3 hours of googling isn't helping me. Thanks in advance.

It has been almost 10 days. Anyone out there? Please help!===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies ... Title I wanted to use: Windows XP SP3: Slow Startup / Boot: Black Screen Delay & Delay after logging in

For some reason I can't preview my post when I use this title: I have tried removing all the punctuation, including the &, which doesn't work and have tried other titles with the same character length, which does work.

Problem Begins Here:

When I turn on or restart my computer, the boot up time from the time I press the power button to the time the final icon on my desktop loads is slow. I am not too concerned about the time after my desktop is shown since I have several items to run at startup.

The two areas of concern are:

1) After the XP logo is shown, my screen goes black. This lasts for about 17 to 19 seconds. I don't know when this started as I rarely restart my computer. The problem is worse if I startup in Safe Mode. It's about 1 minute and 10 seconds before I see anything on the screen, and another 40 seconds before something else is shown on screen. Note: In order to not to have to waste time pressing F8 and choosing Safe Mode, I enter safe mode by specifying so in msconfig. The options I chose were /SAFEBOOT and Minimal.

2) After I login, there is a delay of about 30 to 45 seconds before the desktop is shown. Windows stays at the login confirmation screen during that time. This I feel has happened recently.

Boot Time Results tested using a stopwatch:

Normal Boot (i.e. Not Safe Mode):

Hi.

I hope I am posting this on the correct forum. After submitting my first problem a while ago and getting a solution here, I hope you can help again.

For some reason my Windows XP installation suddenly takes long to log in.

It is quick to the logon screen, but then when I enter my username it takes VERY long to load my personal settings. And then get to the Desktop.

One of the other symptoms is that Outlook cannot connect to my echange server, but I can ping it. No error messages comes up at all, and I am at a loss where to start looking next.

I think it might be a program that installed via the internet.

I have run AVG Anti Spyware, with no result. Trend Office Scan also found no virus infected files on my PC.

I have attached a Hijack This log file.

Please help!
Thank you,
Connaboy

Approximately two weeks ago I left my laptop on over night while downloading something. The next morning I returned to my laptop and was not and could not connect to any networks. I reinstalled the drivers for my wireless card and tried to connect. Whenever I try and connect to any network it goes through the connection process and only connects with limited connectivity, however, the icon in the bottom rate depicts the unconnected icon. After a few minutes it will fully connect and everything will be fine. This whole process is repeated every time I have to connect to the internet.

I initially thought it was a problem with my wireless card but upon booting into Vista my computer instantly connected to the network with no problems.

I can't find anyone with a similar problem but I'm wondering if there is a known solution. Any thoughts?

Does anyone know anything about using vbscript to respond to Windows dialog boxes?

I am trying to script a print job to a network printer and have it save on the printer as a secure job (so the user will have to be in front of the printer to release the job, thereby protecting sensitive information from just sitting there for anyone to see.) The printer is a Canon ImagerRunner iR6570 and has this capability.

The problem I'm encountering is that a dialog box (initiated by the printer driver, not vbscript) pops up when a job is sent to the printer and waits for the user to press 'OK' to accept the userID and password for the secure job (which are filled in automatically because I set that up in the printer properties). The user can change the password if he/she wants to, but really all they need to do is click 'OK' to accept the password that's pre-configured.

Can I use vbscript to dismiss this dialog box? If so, how do I do that?

A:Solved: Scripting a response to Windows dialog boxes

Looks like that has to be done in vb instead of vbscript, which makes sense because if it could be done in vbscript then it would be too easy for people to write scripts to take over your machine.
It's OK though because I found that the printer will allow me to save the print job to one of it's mailboxes instead of saving as a secure print job. When saving to mailboxes the password is not needed until you stand in front of the machine to release the job.

I'll mark this post as solved.

Hello;

Ever since clearing-out some old, no longer used apps from "Add/Remove Programs" (Control Panel) to free-up additional space on our hard drive, a pain in the drain "FLASHLIGHT" pops-up every time we go to open "My Computer". It lasts several
seconds until the drive listings appear and the screen populates. "My Computer" is the only place this is happening, and as I said, appears to be the result of having deleted old programs no longer in use. Microsoft wrote a report on the problem, but it does nothing to resolve the issue. They say its USB, HP printer, cable modem related or Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)-related, but none of these fixes work (FYI, MS article #819017). Any suggestions would be appreciated-

(BTW..."My Computer" loads at normal speeds with no flashlights in Safe Mode)

My computer runs on Windows XP Home plus Service Pack 1 + 2. Windows Messenger version: 4.7.
Often, when I open Outlook Epxress (version 6), Windows Messenger is loaded although Outlook Express should not log on automatically on Windows Messenger (corresponding option box is unchecked) and Windows Messenger is set so as not to run or load automatically when the computer boots.
I want to disable it (in Outlook Express), but as a consequence Outlook Express may take a very long time to open. I found a tool to disable Windows Messenger but I am not sure if it can prevent a possible delay in Outlook Express:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_mess_disable.htm
Also, I don't wish to change the registry manually, as it can cause serious problems...
Renaming or moving the Windows Messenger folder does not work - it is protected, and I can't removed the protection.

Is the tool above worth running?

The bitter truth of realizing the latency (delay) in the monitoring of line in/microphone inputs in Windows Vista/7/8 is being regarded as the most unsolved mystery in the windows audio environment. This accounts for all those musicians (like me and other people who were enjoying music through the computer during Windows XP), drown in sorrow in realizing the latency in monitoring the line in/microphone after upgrade. This shattered the positive expectations of flying to the sky after upgrading from Windows XP. Some reverted back to the ground with Windows XP and are happy. But others like me who upgraded the hardware too, learnt the hard way that once you are in the air you cannot come back to the ground as there were no available Windows XP drivers! After all those 'negative' results from experiments like wasting valuable hours in searching/modifying Windows XP drivers, getting cramped fingers after workout through linux commands etc. I finally devised a method to resolve the global problem with easy and basic steps.
Instructions as follows-
1. Download and install the latest 'FL Studio' demo version from their website. This includes the important 'ASIO4ALL' drivers.
2. Connect the line in/microphone systems and check whether they can be heard, well, with their latency. In some systems with the default configurations, only external microphone connection works by default. So, if prompted to select the connected input type, always choose microphone instead of line in.

it suggested disabling security firewall but i'm not sure if that's the correct thing to do or even how to do that!
