Is there anyway of getting Remote Desktop to work like other remote desktop programs where it doesn't require logging on as the users themselves but to use an admin account to login to the users current active sessions?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I have windows xp home edition on both of my computers, and they do have a remote desktop program, but ive found out that windows xp pro actually has a better version of it that will actually work. I cant get the windows xp home version of it to work. Is there anyone that knows of a free remote desktop program, or if someone would be able to send the windows xp pro version of the remote desktop program.

XP Home has "Remote Assistance", while XP Pro has both "Remote Desktop", as well as "Remote assistance". You can download from Microsoft, a Remote Desktop "add on" which will enable your computer to become the "client" but not the "server".

OS: Win8 64bit (My desktop is Win8, my laptop is Win7. We're dealing with the desktop here.)
Where I am: university network, but these features seem to be working with my laptop.
Things I've checked: allowing services through Windows Firewall (Bonjour, WMC services, etc.)
Allowing remote services in System Properties
Many, many existing threads and non-solutions
How I'm feeling:

None of these features or applications work, and they're all supposed to function differently from one another (e.g. WMC doesn't use the Apple Bonjour service, so it isn't a program-specific problem). I just want to control my media system with my desktop
Is there some obscure service or file or setting that I'm missing that could prevent any remote applications?

Hi guys,

i have a question about remote connection, but i don't know exactly what kind of solution i'm looking for...

i have a desktop with quad-cpu and much bigger memory, and i have another laptop which is old and slow. My thinking is to make a server on the desktop, so that the laptop could share the cpu time and memory from desktop.

That is to say: there could be two persons in front of both computers, they log in using own username and they should not interrupt each others work, but all the programs should run on the desktop computer.

So Remote Desktop, VNC or TeamViewer etc. don't really match my needs...

I don't really know what we call this technology, but i know that citrix have this kind of business solution, what i wanna know is if there are any usable free or inexpensive solutions for personal/non-commercial use?

There may be alternatives to Citrix, but the concept is basically to access a remote desktop on server where you run applications installed on server. If the performance is adequate you will gain in bandwidth and licensing costs, but the scenario you describe implies that the laptop should somehow share the resources of the server, physically(?)...

I am currently unaware of any inexpensive "citrix" solutions but I would think that is what you are after. Logging on the server, starting an app on server, but managing it on the laptop.

Have you looked in to a HDD and RAM upgrade of the Laptop?

Hi all,
I am trying to connect to a remote server but all I get is the error that the Remote Desktop Gateway is not available. I have tried accessing the same remote server from another PC (windows 8.1) and it is working.
I tried connecting to other remote server and get same error. I have not usde remote desktop before until now.
It seems only this particular laptop is having this problem.

I know there are other products out there, like vnc, ultravnc, teamviewer etc etc, but really nothing beats the sheer speed of remote desktop, it's like sitting in front of the actual computer. I also know about Remote Assistance built into Windows 7.

I would like to use remote desktop to do the following if possible.

1. I would like to know if there is a way, to not lock the host machine that you are connected to?, so the user can see what you are doing?.

2. Is there a way that Remote desktop can be used without logging off the logged in account?, or just use the logged in account?

I would like to use Remote Desktop for a remote helpdesk solution if possible. If anyone knows how to do this things I am asking it would be the people on this board.

Ive followed the instructions to a T, & cannot get a remote access connection to my computer using the "Microsoft remote desktop connection" app for iOS. Ive watched youtube videos and followed other directions only to no avail. When I signed up for internet & installed the modem/router(s), the first thing i did was alter my routers default wireless gateway from a 192.168.x.x to my own gateway for security reasons. I also changed the default web interface login credentials. So i am familiar with the web UI of routers & I have spent many hours looking up most of the options that can be configured in the web UI of the many routers I have used & I dont think it has to do with the web UI, I think its something that involves my PC settings. I have another remote desktop app that flawlessly connects to my PC & is extremely fluid in its access, but its a third party app on an inactive andriod device. I'd really like to use the "official" Microsoft remote desktop connection app on my active iOS device &, just as important, know & understand what is preventing access to my computer with this app. I also use the "mobile mouse" app as a remote mouse & keyboard for my computer & its on my active iOS device. So any help is much appreciated

You have to be able to open the ports for RDP on your router/gateway, along with if you have a Dynamic IP that may change, have to use a Dynamic DNS option like OpenDNS. You would really be better off using Teamviewer.

Hi Everyone.

I am trying to run an application on my home computer from school using remote desktop connection. Thing is the application (Eve Online) will open but for some reason the window it opens in will not display on the computer I'm operating from...just comes up blank. Any way to fix this? I notice that on the Start Menu I have something called Windows Security now on the remote computer when I'm connected which will pull up the task manager. I have a fast home computer, connected with a fast internet conx etc so it should run fine... I can open emails etc and run some basic apps but not any games through remote desktop it seems. Battelfield 1942 just won't open at all. Would like to get it running so I can train my skills while I'm at school lol.

I have the latest patches etc on the home comp and the school comp. Thus the latest version of remote desktop connection. I know Eve Online is not a very connection intensive application so internet traffic conx problems shouldn't be an issue (most people overseas can run the game with a 56 k modem just fine)

Is there some setting I'm missing?

I am trying to run a program on a PC when Remote Desktop connects to it. The PC is already running and I want to start a batch file to stop an application and run a different application. I have tried to put the program in the programs tab but it doesn't seem to work. Anyone know how to do this ?

Hey all,

I was going to ask if anyone knew of any good secure remote desktop programs for windows xp. We have a home network and we were running Real VNC to connect our laptop to our desktop downstairs. We really liked it, but we got several viruses on our desktop that we have been working with the kind users in the security forum to eliminate.

Thanks to the users in the security forum (namely D_Troganator) we were able to get rid of the viruses, but we also had to get rid of Real VNC.

I guess I am just wondering if there is any program out there that would work like Real VNC, but also be secure. Thanks for your time. It is, as always, appreciated!

I have 4 computers in my LAN, they share the same workgroup. I am having a problem with a Windows XP Professional SP2 machine. I enabled remote desktop and i cannot connect to it from another computer.
When i try to connect from another computer, i first type in the IP or NetBios name of the computer in question. I get a prompt to enter credentials (username and password). Next i get a prompt because the computer i am trying to connect from is Windows Vista (i tried from another XP computer and it didn't work there eihter), which basically says that it can't verify the identity of the computer and i click yes to continue. After that, the prompt disappears and the Computer input box and the Connect, Help and Options >> buttons in the remote desktop client are greyed out for about 2 seconds, then it just becomes editable\clickable and it doesn't connect, neither does it give any error message. I just can't connect to the remote machine. From the problematic machine i can connect to other machines in my network via remote desktop and it works fine.

Ideally I'm trying to get remote desktop to work on my new phone (HTC Touch Diamond) but for troubleshooting purposes I'm going to use my laptop.

I'm on a LAN behind a common D-LINK router, with a 192.168.0.X /24 subnet
Network connectivity is working great, all the computers on the LAN can use windows file sharing perfectly. So basic network connectivity is not an issue.

My desktop on connected via the LAN adapter, and the notebook via the built in wireless. The phone also uses the wifi.

I created a new account with a password, and enabled Remote Desktop in the [Remote] tab of the System Properties. I've, of course, added the user I created in the "select remote users" window.

When I try the Remote Desktop Connection on my laptop it says "connecting..." for a short moment then blinks off. No error messages or anything. Just nothing. Same thing happends on my phone (when the phone is on the wifi network of course).

All pings work fine, and i've disabled ALL firewalls (inc. windows built in firewall)

Ive recently installed SP3 on the desktop machine, and its all up to date with windows updates.

Does anybody have any ideas what I could be missing here?

I used to always get this to work except for recently when I had to restore my computer.

I usually change the port number of remote desktop in the registry, open the port in the Windows firewall (and router firewall) and I would be able to connect

however, going from external to internal, this does not seem to be the case
I CAN remote desktop from the internal network.

Any ideas what is going on? How can I fix this?

the firewall log on the router shows that the rule does match and allows access.... so seems to be something on the computer itself?

I have 2 PC's with Windows 10 Home version. One upgraded from Windows 7 and 1 upgraded from Windows 8.1. I need to connect over internet to a system for a work application using RDP. I can log into the remote system web page to download the Remote app on both PC's. On the Windows 7 upgraded box I run the RDP received from server, login with my crdentials and everything is fine. On the other PC when I run the RDP from server after I login it pops up a window stating Remote Desktop Connection has stopped working. I have checked that both systems have the same updates applied have the same services installed and still cannot figure out the problem. Pulling my hair out here. Any thoughts would be geatly appreciated.

I have a Windows 7 network set up and whenever I connect remotely to another computer and lock their input such as their keyboard and mouse, the remote user still has the ability to press ctrl alt del, which then allows them to use their keyboard and mouse. My question is, is it possible to disable the ctrl alt del functionality in Windows 7 so that that Blue security screen does not appear? I have tried lots of remote desktop controlling software which has the option to lock the remote computer input, but they still can press ctrl alt del and unlock their keyboard and mouse. Basically I have a comp running XP pro and I want to be able to work locally on one user account, with some kind of remote access server running on another XP user account so that the remote account and the local account can be used simultaniously. I know that this cannot be done with XP Pro remote desktop and could be by Windows Server 2003 remote desktop, but i need an alternate solution to make this happen.

We're using a Server 2008 r2 Terminal server environment.
I have one particular user (running windows 7 64bit) who's having an issue with a HP laserjet 400 M401 printer. She connects with her local printer set to follow her to the remote session but randomly through her session, programs like word or adobe reader
will pull up another random printer in our network instead of her local one.
For instance, today she pulled up a .pdf and it defaulted to one printer across the complex, then later within the same session she pulled up a Wordperfect document and it defaulted to a copier on the other side of the office.
She's the only person having this particular issue. So far my IT manager rebuilt her local profile (albeit sometime back) and I reinstalled drivers but I'm a bit stumped on which direction to take with this one.
I've ideated on it being an issue with USB cables, Printer memory, account data related, or maybe bandwidth?
Any help is appreciated.

Okay I have seen some machines where when you remote desktop into them from a single screen machine to a dual screen machine it will shuffle over all apps to the primary screen and you can keep working. I have seen others that will have dual screens and it will leave the app open on the toolbar but you can't get to it because it is on the 2nd screen and htings don't get shuffled over. Now I have a 3rd type of behavior and I need to figure out why PCs are not all behaving the same.

This new symptom is connecting into a Vista machine that has 2 screens. All the apps themseleves stay on the screen they were left on but the sidebar does squish to the First screen.

Some machines -
Dual screen app 1 on screen 1 and app 2 on screen 2
Remote desktop with single screen both apps show on screen 1.

Other machines -
Dual screen app 1 on screen 1 and app 2 on screen 2
Remote desktop with single screen show app on screen 1 and app 2 shows in toolbar but you have to close it and reopen it to get it on screen 1.

New symptom Vista machines -
Dual screen app 1 on screen 1 and app 2 on screen 2
Remote desktop with single screen show app on screen 1 and app 2 shows in toolbar but you have to close it and reopen it to get it on screen 1 but sidebar.exe shuffles to screen 1.

Ultimately I would like them all to behave like the top option but I don't know where you force this behavior.

I have two systems, "desktop" and "laptop", peer-to-peer networked on my home LAN both running Vista Ultimate SP1. I routinely use Remote Desktop from desktop to laptop. I am accustomed to simply closing the RDP window on desktop (and perhaps reopening it one or more times) and then if I want to use laptop directly, logging back into it from the Windows login window.

Recently (I apologize, but I can't be more specific) I find that (1) I cannot log back into a session after I have closed the RDP window on desktop, (2) I cannot log back into laptop from its logon window. I also find logging out of the RDP session rather than merely closing the window makes no difference. In either case, when I look at the logon window on laptop I see the message saying a remote user is logged in, and if I try to log in anyway, it hangs indefinitely at the "Welcome" window and must be restarted.

I cannot identify any software change to this system that might be responsible. In fact with the exception of Windows Updates I don't think there have been any. The system is a Dell Latitude D830 and all its drivers are the most current.

I have two computers running Windows XP. Let's call them Acquiring and Processing.

Processing has SP3. Acquiring has SP2 and is behind a hardware firewall/router. (cannot upgrade to SP3 due to some software it has to run that will crap out if the computer is upgraded, hence the firewall.)

I configured the firewall/router to give Acquiring a specific address, and to open the port for remote desktop, and to forward anything coming in on that port to the Acquiring computer, which is the only device on that router in any case.

When I go to the Processing computer and try to Remote Desktop to the Acquiring computer, the login window comes up without a hitch. Once I type in the username and password and try to login, however, the desktop of the remote computer won't load. I get the little bar at the top of the screen with the computer name and the option to minimize or close, I can see and move the mouse, but the rest of the screen is completely black. Eventually I just end up closing the remote session (without logging off though, since I am not given that option)

Over on the Acquiring computer, the screen hasn't been locked as per usual. I can still see the desktop, but the computer is frozen. I have no mouse, and I can't even get the keyboard to toggle the lights for numlock and capslock. I then have to do a hard reboot of the Acquiring computer to get it un-frozen.

So, I have scoured every resource I could find to resolve this, and am just flat out stumped....hoping someone here can shed some light on my problem. Here is my situation:

* I have a SBS 2003 R2 Standard machine running (domain controller, exchange, etc)
* I have 7 XP SP2 clients that are part of the domain
* I have an ASA 5505 firewall running, with an ADSL modem connected to that for WAN access

My problem is related to RWW. From the internet (non-lan connection), I can connect without any issues to the RWW homepage (either as a domain user or an administrator). When I click on "connect to work computer", I am presented with a list of the domain PCs. However, once I click on any of them, I receive the following "VB Script: Remote Desktop Disconnected" error window:

"The client could not establish a connection to the remote computer. The most likely causes for this error are:

1) Remote connections might not be established at the remote computer
2) The max number of connections might be exceded at the remote computer
3) A network error might have occurred while establishing the connection
4) The Remote Web Workplace designated port might be blocked by a firewall

Here is what I have confirmed so far:
1) I have opened ports 3389 and 4125 on the ASA
2) I CAN remote desktop directly to the SBS itself (not using RWW)

I have a problem opening on line when I try to open anything from any browser i get that i have no connection
I checked the connection with Verizon and its works fine.
I did a speed test and I get 3.75 download and about 75 upload.
I tried to connect to team Viewer and was not responsive.
When I can get to my logmein accounts it shows this computer as offline

it all fixes by rebooting

i think it all stared by a windows update before it wouldn't fix only by doing a restore point now it works like for a day then its acts up again and so on.

I am having problems where the connection and overall feel of the computer is very slow when running windows remote desktop to connect to my work PC via VPN.

The actual speed of my home internet connection is 100MB so I though that this would give me a really nice speed and make working from a little more seamless however its not the case at all.

My laptop at home is pretty powerful and running windows 7, my desktop computer which I connect too runs windows xp.

Not sure if my broadband provider has anything to do with it however they are Virgin Media.

Can anyone offer me any advise or possible things to try?

It might actually be your companies security settings on there end. The way VPN works is that its a secure way to do things remotely, and generally doing stuff securely sometimes slows everything down, this is the same case. Heck, I'm on the same network remotting into an server and its very laggy.

I've got a Toshiba Tecra running WinXP Pro & enabled Remote Desktop. I added the user so now it's part of the Remote User's group. It's running behind a Linksys WRT54GS router. I have DSL and I know my "external" IP address changes. I am able to connect to my WinXP system from any system inside my network. I can even go through Internet Explorer using the Web Connection. But only from inside my network. I'm not running Zone Alarm or Norton Internet Security on my WinXP system.

When I take 1 of my systems off my LAN and dialup through NetZero, I cannot connect.

This is what I've already done:
I forwarded port 3389 in my Router to the IP address of my WinXP system (
I also forwarded port 3254 to that same address. This is for the Web Connection. I installed IIS. Went to Control Panel, Admin Tools, IIS. Under Web Sites\Default Web Site then Properties, I changed the TCP Port from the default of 80 to 3254. I found a web-site with those instructions.

Because I know that my external IP address changes, I registered with DynDNS.org and created a host for myself. It's free. Then I downloaded a free utility that goes out every 5 minutes and checks my external IP address and updates DynDNS.org.

For this discussion, let's say that my host is llbrown143.thisexample.org
When I go to ping llbrown143.thisexample.org from any computer on my LAN or even when I dial in using NetZero, I get the assigned external (public)... Read more

I'm trying to connect from one W7 netbook to another W7 laptop, two different networks (two different IP addresses to further clarify)

It is not working. I did infact enable remote assistance and remote desktop connection on both computers.

What would cause this problem? On the netbook I'm connecting from, I use RDP software from accessories folder and input the correct IP (I'm 100% positive). It tells me the other computer is either off, not on the network or remote connection disabled - but all is false.

If it helps, I'm using Dlink DIR-655 router and Avira antivirus. I doubt they would interfere.

I'm trying to figure out where in the router interface I'd enable remote connection, but not sure what area would cover this. Under "tools > admin" I enabled what is called "Enable Remote Management" on port 8080, restarted router. Same problem.

Double check to make sure you have Remote desktop enable on both PC's. If you are connecting through your Lan you dont have to worry about having the ports opened in your Router. Open your command prompt on both computers and type: nestat -a and look for TCP port 3389 to be opened. If that port is opened you should be good to go. Also if you have any software firewall OTHER than Window Firewall disable that incase its causing any interference.

I have a Win 8.1 Pro X64 system that I'm trying to RDT (remote Desktop) to but can't seem to make it work. I have it working fine to my Win 7 Pro X64 system sitting right next to it.

I've setup Port Forwarding in the Router the same as it's set for the Win 7 system, just using a different port. When I then try to make a RDT connection to it, it never connects. I've tried it from within my home LAN (192.168.1.x) and from a public network. Both work correctly to the Win 7 Pro X64 system but not to the Win 8.1 Pro X64 system.

Looking for some way to debug this and see what it going wrong.

Both machines have the Windows Firewall setup to Pass Remote Desktop and Remote Desktop Connection.
As I said, the router port forwarding is setup the same for both, just using different ports (3390 for W7 and 33390 for W8).

All ideas greatly appreciated.

Hmmm, I wonder what would happen if I made the W8 system use 3390 (the default port for RDT) and 33390 for the W7 system? Guess I'll give that a try.

I have a labtop at home running xp pro with service pack 2 and all the latest updates from microsoft. I have activated all of the remote desktop features on the labtop. I am able to establish a connection from my home desktop as a test. However I am not able to establish a connection from any other computer outside of my house specificly my work computer. I also tried connecting from my friends computer witch is not connected to a server like my work computer. This test was unsuccessful. My set up at home---- I have a cable modem attached to a dlink router witch is unincrypted for open access and my desk top is wired to the router and the labtop is connected wirelessly. Remembering that the labtop is the one i want access to. I really want to know how to connect to my labtop from work. according to the microsoft site this is possibly. well what am i doing wrong.

Do you have a static IP address on the computer?
Have you done the appropriate port mapping on the router to that IP address?

followed every tut out there..
checked all allow options on Remote Settings..
added user "Everyone"..

my network is: modem->PC1->PC2

while attempting to connect, for 'computer' i tried using public IP, internal IP, computer name (even localhost)..
for 'user name' also tried several combinations, but mainly computername\user..

im using PC2(WinXP) to attempt connection to PC1(Win7)..

any thoughts?

Hi all... I'm usually pretty comfortable with networking support, but recently got stuck on a project for a client of mine, and could use a little help.

First, the rather simple goal: to be able for an office employee to use MS Remote Desktop at home to access a work computer.

As I understand it, in order to use RDC from an off-site computer, one will first need to establish a VPN connection to the office network (RDC has been tested within the office environment and works fine)

The office I am supporting has an AT&T broadband connection with 8 static IP's (5 usable) running off of a Netopia 3347-02 (firmware 7.81r2). The Netopia gateway is assigned to 7x.xxx.xxx.30 and the computer I have set up as the VPN server (by doing basically this http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/xp_vpn_server.htm) is assigned to 7x.xxx.xxx.20.

I would like to simply VPN to the 7x.xxx.xxx.20 machine, and then RDC into that and 3-4 other machines once on VPN. I have accessed the Netopia settings and set up pinholes for port 1723 on TCP, but repeatedly get an "Error 800" when trying to establish the Windows VPN.

Hi everybody...I've noticed quite a few problems with this around here, but my situation is far less complex. See I have a Surface Pro that I'm trying to use to remote access my desktop. My desktop is running Win Professional and has Norton 360 on it for
security. I'm just running over my home network at the moment so I'm operating within the same WLAN. When I try to connect via my Surface Pro, after putting in my desktops computer name, I come to the point where I have to enter the credentials. This was pretty
simple as I only have the one, So I put in my Admin log on info (just as I would to log on to my desktop normally). but after I do I get the dreaded "Your credentials didn't work" page. I've tried over and over again but It simply wont work. I have
both PCs set up to accept Remote access, I have Remote Display cleared thru the Firewall, I even tried at one point to use the non- NLA just to see if it would work, but to no avail. I can't connect from my desktop rig to my surface either. When I try that
I get "an authentication error has occured. The Local Security Authority could not be contacted", I saw in another forum that this could be due to an expired password, and even tho I assumed that was for a VPN access I ensured m,y passwords were

okay so I solved the issue. I was eventually able to access my surface from my desktop by doing the user name in the new Win8 RDC format :

"MicosoftAccount/[email protected]" and then using my MS account password
Getting things done that way didn't work in the opposite direction tho, so I hunted down what I considered to be the simple solutions....a misplaced number, an unchecked box, a improperly installed driver/software...anything really. Then I finally ran across
the clue that solved it all, and ofcourse it was a stupid little thing. My user name on my Desktop is HoboFist, thats what I sign in under...thats whats listed under users in the control panel. So I went to my HoboFist user folder (the one with the link from
the start menu), but when I went up one folder (now in c:/users/) I saw that the folder that had said "HoboFist" was actually addressed as ****(my name). See when the computer was built the original Admin account was created under my name for quickness...then
the account was later changed to HoboFist thru the control panel. Apparently this DOESN'T alter the credential info for the RDC...so the user name I was trying never existed according to the software. When I logged on with the original user name and current
password, it connected no problem.
Sorry to have caused you guys  grief over a stupid mix up. Thanks so much and I hope this can help someone else in the future.

Hello I have been trying to get my friends computer but I can't get it, he e-mailed me the file I needed to get on to his computer, however when it asked for his password it says its wrong... Why? I typed his password from his computer.... that he uses to log on to the computer.. His computer is Windows Vista Home premium My computer is Windows 7 home premium... Its frustrating me, I live about 500 miles away.. from his comptuer's location..

Also, I never use this feature its slow and annoying. Goto http://www.logmein.com and create a account and send him a deployment link. Once installed on his/her PC you can get in when ever you want belonging that its enabled on there PC.

We have several remote systems that can all connect fine. I am having an issue with one box. It is a windows 7 home premium machine with netgear wireless nic. When I open mstsc to connect to a remote machine I put in the ip address and click on connect. I receive an immediate failure with the text "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again...blah blah"

I have a server 2008 r2 with Network level authentication enabled. I have 8 other systems that are hardwired, at different geographic locations and all connect fine.

I have not made any changes on the server side since this problem seems to be local to this client only.

On the client I have made the following changes/observations. I have disabled the firewall, cleared the remote desktop cache, remove the MRU entries from the registry, verified that port 3389 is open via telnet. I have been bashing my head for days trying to figure out why this one box is not working. The problem occurs for every user on the box including the admin.

I don't receive the box that prompts for warning if there is a server authentication issue but I think that is because I selected ignore at some point and said yes to continue. I'm not sure where that cache resides to delete that selection. I'm not sure if that is where my problem lies or not. Can anyone please assist?

From the Remote computer please try this, if unsuccessful please post back.
Click on Start and type secpol.msc. Then go to Local Security Policy=> Local Policies=> User Rights Assigment=> Choose Allow Log on Locally and select the User or Group that needs to access this computer remotely. Also select Allow Logon to Remote Desktop Services (if you have RDS or Terminal Services configured in your Win08 Server). Try to remote connect after.

I am running a wireless Network with D-Link 714P+ Router. My PC is wired to the Router, with 2 other computers running wireless. I am running XP Pro.

When accessing my PC (or at least attempting to) from a remote Computer using Remote Desktop, I think I have to add something after the IP Address when typing in the Computer Name/IP Address. I have RD working successfully within my Network. Can someone clarify what I need to do here to access my PC through the Internet then Network

Hi. I just viewed Kari Finn's clearly explained Remote Desktop Connection on Win10 and how to connect to remote computer, thank you for that. Good job! In my case though, I use Win XP Home edition. Do I have to have Win XP Pro edition to connect on RDC to Win 10 host using Hyper-V virtual creation?
Also, if that is the case, how can I reboot my remote computer XP OS and get onto the Start Up Menu page? The keyboard command is released to my Win 10 host computer on start up and I don't have access to keyboard commands (such as F8) until Win XP has been fully booted up. How do I access that Start Up menu page otherwise?
This would be helpful for me to know. Thanks.

Hi Hibs, welcome to the Ten Forums.

You simply cannot use Windows XP Home as remote host, meaning you cannot connect to it using the Remote Desktop Connection. There are some hacks around the Internet but I very strongly advice against them.

A workaround, in case you have or can find a valid Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate license is to install Windows 7 on a Hyper-V virtual machine, then install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode on that virtual machine. Works perfectly giving you Windows XP Pro SP3.

If the mouse and keyboard are released by the Windows XP vm back to host, you simply need to bring the pointer on the vm and click to get them back to vm. The F8 keyboard shortcut when booting XP up works then totally normally bringing up the advanced options boot menu:

To release the mouse and keyboard back to host, press CTRL + ALT + LEFT ARROW.

OS: Win8 64bit (My desktop is Win8, my laptop is Win7. We're dealing with the desktop here.)
Where I am: university network, but these features seem to be working with my laptop.
Things I've checked: allowing services through Windows Firewall (Bonjour, WMC services, etc.)
Allowing remote services in System Properties
Many, many existing threads and non-solutions
How I'm feeling:
None of these features or applications work, and they're all supposed to function differently from one another (e.g. WMC doesn't use the Apple Bonjour service, so it isn't a program-specific problem). I just want to control my media system with my desktop
Is there some obscure service or file or setting that I'm missing that could prevent any remote applications from working?

I've searched the internet and I can't find a solution. I've long been using Windows 7 and never had any problems with Remote Desktop from outside my network however I don't use it frequently so it is several months since I last used it.

When I right click on Computer -> Properties and Remote Settings

The lower part of the screen where you specify your remote desktop settings is missing. The issues that I've seen regarding this have two solutions typically.

1) The TermService is not running. It is my case.
2) That the DWord value should be set to 0 in the registry for tfDenyTSConnections

I have attached a screenshot confirming all this.

Anybody any advice as to what to try next?

Remote Desktop Connection wants the IP or name of the remote computer to connect to. But suppose the remote computer is behind a router. The router has one WAN IP, say, which will be the same for all the computers connected off of that router, (when you google "my ip" from any of them) and then each computer connected off of the router will have a LAN IP, something like So if I want to help the person connected to the computer (and not the person connected at off of this router what do I tell Remote Desktop Connection at my computer to reach them?

So, I had remote desktop working on my computer for about two years and now it doesn't work anymore. Every time I try to access it from another computer (I don't have and don't know how to get a domain name, so I just use my IP address, which I get from whatismyip.com), I get an error message saying I cannot connect to the remote computer.

As far as I know, I have done everything right. I enabled remote desktop in system properties, I created a static IP address in TCP/IP properties, and I configured my router to forward the default port (3389) to the correct local IP address I specified. I have disabled windows firewall and put mstsc on my list of exceptions for the firewall that I use (BitDefender). I also pinged my IP address and received all packets sent.

I am running windows xp professional with sp3.

Any suggestions?

try using the computer name to connect right click on the my computer icon and select properties and then the computer name use the full computer name. while your in there check the remote tab make sure the allow user to connect remotely to this computer is checked. on both pc's. also make sure both machines have xp pro i know you can only go one way between pro and home edition can't remember which.

I am using windows 7 - home premium

If I connect to a remote computer using RDP, I can all the features of remote computer. Likewise if someone connects to my computer from a remote computer using RDP, he has access to all programs on my computer. This person can assist me with any help I need by connecting remotely using RDP.

Same assistance can be provided using Remote Assistance, then whats the need of Remote Assistance when RDP provides required functionality ? What different does Remote Asistance do from RDP ?

This morning, I heard a nationally syndicated computer expert state that some Chinese hackers were "getting into" Windows based computers through "Remote Access/Remote Desktop" even if the service is turned off. According to the guru, "They will turn it on for you."
Being very concrete, as well as, somewhat dull concerning computers, I find this hard to believe. Could someone, in layman's terms, tell me the circumstances needed that would allow a hacker to take control of someone's system when a necessary service is turned off ??
