Solved: Network connected but no internet on main PC

Q: Solved: Network connected but no internet on main PC

I currently have a wireless network set up at home which I connect to with a PC and 2 laptops. The PC runs XP and the laptops Vista.

I cannot connect to the internet on the main PC but have no problems on the laptop.
I have looked on various help websites and run the IPCONFIG/ALL tip. All info looks to be correct with IP address as usual.

Can anyone give me advice as to how to fix this?

Preferred Solution: Solved: Network connected but no internet on main PC

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I thought i was reasonably PC savvy but after reading some of these posts I realise that I have no idea! - please be gentle...

I am living in a boarding hostel which has a wireless network (via Mac Airports) which I have connected to - it says that the signal strength is good (though it does appear to fluctuate)

This wireless connection uses a proxy server to connect to the internet (so that they have some control over what the students can see).

My problem is that I can connect to the network, but not always to the internet (using firefox). the internet seems to cut in and out, and if it is connected, it runs VERY slowly, and most often times out (even when opening something simple like google.com)

What I need to know is:
1. how can I tell if this is a PC issue or network issue?
2. I ran the intel PROset diagnostics tool and it says that the ping test failed (no response: default gateway, DHCP server)
Some things that I've tried:
1. other computers seem to work fine on the network
2. disabled windows firewall
3. talked to the techs but since they're mac users they weren't familiar with vista and therefire not too much help.

Ideas on what to do please??

A:Solved: Vista connected to wireless network but internet not connected

got it sorted now) It appears that even though my PC said the signal was strong enough, it wasn't (Vista must need a very stong and consistent wireless connection) After some searching I found that one of the airports in the building had been switched off and even though it was the furthest from my room, it made a big difference when activated...

Hi all...
So I've been having a really troubling and confusing issue that's got me and every tech person I've had look at my laptop totally stumped...Broadcasting to the far reaches of the net hoping someone will be able to help or at least identify the problem:
My laptop (Compaq Presario A900, running Windows Vista, bought in 2008, absolutely no issues until now) will NOT connect to the internet at my house no matter how hard I try. Here's the rundown:
-No connectivity problems whatsoever at school, Starbucks wifi, or at home. Could access network and internet just fine wirelessly
-Last tuesday Shaw came to install a new router and modem as we were getting really spotty service. This gave us a new SSID and password, etc.
-My laptop would connect to the new network just fine but would NOT connect to the internet (I was getting the 'unidentified network, local only' message in network and sharing center). All other laptops and devices, including my android phone and Ipad connected no problem and were enjoying internet connectivity and yet my laptop won't even PING google.
-It connected FABULOUSLY at school only 4 hours prior (also a secure connection)
-Called Shaw tech support, spent 3 hours on the phone with the guy and did the remote screen access thing. While doing so he deleted my stored/remembered networks in hopes that that would fix the problem. After 3 hours on the phone and doing ipconfig/release/renew, resetting the channels on the... I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. I have no idea what is happening.

I have:
Gateway Performance 933
XP home edition SP2
Belkin N1 Wireless router (F5D8231-4) - but pc is hardwired
Motorola surfboard cable modem (SB5101)
Trendnet 32-bit gigabit pci adapter

Belkin network has been working fine for years. Router is in my house - all pcs in house use wireless. One other pc (in detached garage) is hardwired to router and works fine. I wanted to connect old Gateway to network. I removed modem pci and installed trendnet ethernet adapter (left old wireless belkin adapter installed, but too far away to use).

What is happening:
Network connections says I am connected to network. IE 7 will not connect to any web site. says general address not valid. I can't access the internet, however, my desktop weather is getting info from the internet ie 72 degrees and cloudy. Also windows downloaded 39 updates.

Things I tried:
1) compared internet options and network connection to pc that is working - all exactly the same
2) tried to access router in IE - no go
3) moved pc into my house - connected to router with different cable, different port - no go
4) reset winsock catalog - no go
5) tried pinging from cmd - this I can do! (see below for results)

I don't know what else to do. Here are my results for ipconfig/all and pinging gateway etc.

I have a dell inspiron 6000 with a built in Intel pro wireless b/g card, centrino 2ghz, 1gb ram, winxp pro...anyways I've owned the machine for about 7 months now and I have never had a problem getting it on any network. Just the other day I was at school and I was unable to connect to the internet [i can connect to the network, i get an ip address and everything, I went so far as checking to make sure that i wasn't booted from my university's network]...at first I thought it as temporary, then I went home and i ran into the same problem, I verified mac address configuration (I have a filter setup), Ip address, I've repaired the connections, updated drivers, I even tried another network card I had laying around - linksys wusb54g - and I still get connected to the network, but no internet connection. I've checked the network and internet on my other computers and it's fine. I have two other wireless computers and two other wired. I've been trying to figure this out for more than a week. I know this is a rather lengthy message, but I would really appreciate anyones help on this matter.
Thanks in advance

A:Solved: Connected to Network but no internet connection...

First off, you probably want to get the latest drivers for the Intel wireless card, they're problematic at times. Next, try this Automated WINSOCK Fix for XP, reboot and see if that helps. Finally, if you're still off-line, and you have SP2 on the machine, try these two reset commands.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

I have three computers at home: 2 desktops and 1 laptop and they all run windows 7. For a week now I haven't been able to connect to the internet from one of the desktops. The initial setup was wireless and worked fine for years. I've tried every advise I could find online: Powered off and on the modem and the router, disabled and enabled the adapter, reseted WINSOCK and TCP/IP, assigned a permanent IP address, did a system restore to the last day the internet worked, turned off windows defender (windows firewall has always been off), turned off Webroot, I bought a new wireless USB adapter which connected to the network but still no internet access and my last resort: I got a really long ethernet cable and connected directly to the wireless router AND then directly to the modem... NOTHING! Still says that I am connected to an unidentified network and that there is not internet access.
At this point I am pretty sure that it is not a network or hardware issue and I am really frustrated! Any help will be greatly appreciated!

My Xbox 360 recently went in for repairs due to a malfunction in the hardware. When i got it back a few days ago, I reconnected it to my wireless network using the same method that i used when i first got the Xbox. It was then that the internet connection on my computer stopped working. The network works fine because i can ping the main computer in the house. When I opened the linksys control panel i received a message reading, "You are connected to the network, but the internet cannot be found. I have tried a number of tests and steps that I will list below and have searched numerous forums, but to no avail. If anyone has any ideas please help.

Other Information

-There are 3 computers (excluding mine), a psp, and an xbox 360 all with internet connections that are running great.
-The main computer (the one connected to the router) is a mac while all the others (including mine) are running on Windows XP Home Edition.

What I've Tried

-I have disconnected and reconnected the internet connection.
-I have been able to ping the main computer.
-I have not been able to ping google.
-I have restarted the DSL and Router and have gotten no results.
-I have run the internet connection wizard to make sure all of the settings were correct.

I any one has any suggestions or comments it would be greatly appreciated.

My Wi-Fi just stopped working all of a sudden I'm guessing that it has something to do with my DHCP though my cabled connection still works fine. When i tried assigning a static IP it worked though my auto assign still wont do anything so this is only a temporary solution.
I tried following about 10-20 different threads but nothing has worked so far. Oh and the connection I'm talking about is the "Ethernet adapter vEthernet (Naar WAN)". the 1 that i was using when i copied my ipconfig/all was the "Ethernet adapter Ethernet Laptop" connection. and from what i can see my Wi-Fi connection doesn't have an ipv4 address but i have absolutely no idea how to fix this. Ive tried about everything that i can think of.
I've tried flushing and resetting but it didn't work. When i tried to use the troubleshoot all it said that my IP wasn't assigned properly even though DHCP is enabled and the "Obtain an IP address automatically" box is checked.
When i tried ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew i just get a error message saying that the request to the DHCP server timed out
Please help me I'm kinda panicking right now

The only difference between now and before it stopped working is that i installed active directory+DNS on windows server 2012 through hyper V for a school assignment

Have a Acer Aspire 5735Z laptop that was connected to the internet by our wireless connection this afternoon, but my daughter turned the computer off and when my husband turned it back on an hour later it is saying that it is connected to the network but it is not connecting to the internet. Haven't had any problems connecting to the internet prior to this and have had quite a few different laptops connected up (we have holiday flats and do connect other laptops). The wired connection from the modem to the PC in the office is working OK. Hi all.

Got a problem that i need help with.

I have a Netgear DGN2000 router wired to a desktop machine running windows 7. In another room i have another desktop machine running windows XP. I have a netgear WN111v2 network adapter connected to this machine. The network adapter says it is connect to the router, the icon in the bottom right hand corner is green and the signal strength is in high 90%s, yet when i start up internet explorer the message i get is "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".

Also, in the house there is a laptop running windows 7 (connected wirelessly - no problems) another laptop running windows xp (connected - no problems) and an Xbox 360 (connected ok).
Been on to netgear tech support all they could suggest was to lower the security settings on the router, ultimately lowered down to disabled - still nothing.
Disabled homegroup on the windows 7 machine still nothing running out of ideas now. Can someone out there help please?

I have a new TL-WR740N router by TP-Link. I set up the network with a visible SSID and WPA2 password and I access the internet with no problem from my Windows 7 laptop.

My mom's laptop with Windows Vista is giving an error that I had never seen before (she has used several wireless networks before without any problems). The computer connects to the network and tells me to "Press the configuration button" on the router. The router doesn't have a configuration button. If I click "Next" it will say it "Could not get settings from TP-LINK TL-WR740N - Verify the device PIN (...)" When it first tells me to press the configuration button, I don't have to click next - there is an option that says "I can't find the configuration button, I want to enter a key or passphrase instead." So I click there and put the password. It connects to the network, but only locally. No internet.

I have tried turning the router off and back on (that used to solve a similar problem some time ago). If we plug the router to her laptop using that LAN cable, then she can use internet. I tried to set up the network a second time (the SSID, the password and stuff) using her computer instead of mine, but that didn't do anything.

Thank you very much in advance '=)

Having problems with my network and cant for the life of me work out why.

My main computer (running windows 7) is connected directly with my router and connects to the internet no problems.

When I plug my laptop (windows vista) into the router, it also works fine.

My xbox 360 is also plugged into the router but won't connect to the internet. When I run trouble shooting, it says it has a network connection but no Internet connection.

I have a cable running from my router to another room which has a network switch. Everything that is plugged into the network switch will not connect to the internet, including my laptop which works when plugged in to the router.

Can anyone help me with this?

This just happened out of nowhere yesterday morning. My roommate was using her laptop with no issues until suddenly the connection cut out. She tried reconnecting, but had no luck so she waited, still no signal. She was able to see our network name but it would not allow her to connect to it. Same thing when I tried my laptop. I could see it scanning wi-fi and showed available connections including our own, but it wouldn't let me connect.

The desktop in our home office has internet. The modem is showing all the proper lights flashing, indicating there is ethernet, DSL and internet.

When we open our laptops and get a signal even for a brief moment, it kills the connection on the desktop and all lights on the modem go off, except the power light which starts flashing slowly. Totally loses connection. As soon as we close the laptop, the connection comes back on the desktop.

I noticed that the icon in the tray that indicates connectivity (the two computer monitors flashing blue back and forth) looks different than normal. There is no little globe in front of them, there are just two monitors and there is usually a globe showing internet access. So I clicked it and it says we're connected to "Network 7" Access: local. So I took a screen shot of this.

What is going on, can someone help me out? I have no idea what to do but we need internet on the laptops. If you need any more information from me, feel free to ask! Thanks!

Hi guys and girls

have a problem with a friends laptop and i need your help because ive run out of ideas and i dont like formatting unless i have tried as much as i can too rectify the problem and im close to losing the rest of my hair.

so the problem started with the normal limited connectivity, i was given the laptop and tried to rectify the problem using ip resets renew, release, ipvc reset, winsock reset and it wouldnt budge,

if i leave the ipv4 settings to automatic it will not display the ssid of the router, it will connect to it but display unidentified network, if i enter the ip address dns e.t.c then it will display the router but it will still not connect to the internet,

i have tried updating drivers, removing all drivers and letting windows rediscover and install driver.

i have also tried installing an internet dongle, the laptop will pickup the dongle, install the software but then display no connection.

i then tried installing a belkin wirless adapter but since the software is only up to vista i dont believe it has worked. ( everything installed ok but still will not connect to the internet)

i am also finding out that it is not getting proxy details either. and on occasions i will get limited connectivity or the adapter will refuse to connect to the router.

i have run xirrus wifi inspector on both my laptop (working) and his laptop (not working)

the signal strength runs from about -44db too -50db which is strong enough but the automatic ip address di... Read more

I have Internet Serviec throug At&t, its not wireless.. Originally when i got the internet i Had a desktop computer that it was set up on. Since then I have aquired an Xbox 360 and ASUS Notebook. I went and bout a wireless Belkin Router so i could connect all three. A month or so later the desktop computer (which was about 10 yrs old and had no virus protection) DIED. I just unconnected it from the wall. now the modem (AT&T) is connected to the wall phone jack the Xbox is conected by and HD connection cable to Belkin Router and My laptop is wirelessly connected (we have had good connection for about 6 months to a year). Recently i have been having problems with connection and speed. Ill be online connected and when clicking on say another web page it gives me the Error page where it states not connected to internet and has the option to "Diagnose connection problems" when I diagnosed it.. it states " there may be a problem with your domain Server Connection name DNS"...Ive tried doing some reasearch since usually i can fix minor computer issues alone.. but im at a loss here.. The connection has been disrupted on the Xbox as well of which it states to shut down te router for 20 sec and restarts ..works but keeps happening.

Well, since both machines are experiencing issues, my guess is you have modem or ISP issues. Do this with a wired connection from the laptop to eliminate wireless issues.

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

Here's also the Line Quality Tests FAQ to help you understand the results. This will answer some questions about the line quality display.

Have DSL and for brower-Use Internet Explorer- WinXp , Netgear router and Earthlink as my provider. It's getting where half the time I cannot connect to the internet, Page not found.

I go thru all the steps:

Reboot computer
unplug and replug DSL Modem
unplug rand replug router
use command line and entering ipconfig, ping ipconfig, etc
use command line to renew and release network

Half the time one of the above steps gets me in and sometimes not.

I called tech support and they say they cant help me be/c my router was not bought thru them. If I disconnect my network , they will be able to help me but then, my configurations would be changed and I replace one problem with another.

Any Ideas what could be happening? Any help is appreciated.

Hi, I have been through all the threads and I cannot seem to find one that is similar to mine. I had a network that was working fine, and now suddenly my main computer has disappeared from the network. It just suddenly happened when I tried to print to the main printer on the network.
I can access the internet on the router and print to my main colour printer that is connected to my computer but when I click "View workgroup computers" I get the following message "Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrater of this service to find out if you have permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available"
I also cannot print to Acrobat Distiller.
I recently changed from McAfee to Kapersky because McAfee was not able to update and I also ran RegCure. Could either of these things have caused my network to disappear? I also removed Google Desktop Search and then installed it again a week or so later. Sorry if these are dunb questions but I am a real newbie to the way computers work and only know my way around digital image editing!

A:Solved: Why has my main computer disappeared from the network?

Hi Everyone, Is my face red! My son suggested that I check if both my Firewalls were turned on, and sure enough - they were. When I turned off the Kapersky one, My Network places magically returned. I hope this helps other newbies like myself.

Hello, My computer is Lenovo ThinkPad X250, working with Windows 10. I have a problem since a few days: the computer seems to work fine, except that no program needing to access internet, such as Windows Live Mail, Skype or Internet Explorer can launch. It is not as if they launch and can?t connect to internet, they simply show their loading screen forever upon activation. The only way I?ve found to interact with them is to close them via the Task Manager. Other programs such as Powepoint or Illustrator launch and run without problem. This problem started recently, and may or may not have been cause by another issue that I had a few days prior. I will sum it up here for clarity?s sake:-The first problem that I had was a sudden eternal starting loop with blue screen from Windows itself upon starting the computer.-I rebooted in safe mode, restored the system to a previous version, and the computer worked fine for about a week.-Then I had the same problem again, except this time restore system didn?t work. On the blue screen I noticed that the error was caused by ?SPUVCbv.exe?, which after an internet search proved to be related to the integrated camera driver.-I launched the computer in safe mode, uninstalled the camera driver, and the problem of Windows rebooting endlessly stopped. However since then, I have the problem, for which I now require assistance, of the internet-related programs failure to launch. Up to now, I verified/tried ... I am connected wirelessly with internet access according to my computer, but my internet sporadically stops working. Usually happens every 5 minutes or so. However, my Skype always works, even when my browsers and games don't. This has only happened within the last 3 days. Before that, my internet worked perfectly. Please help!

I am assuming something extra is running in the background when you have a browser open, or you play games (I am sure on line games use browsers to operate) have you checked for tool bars? or small programs that where not there before?

Ok, we get internet through a wireless tower that beams it to an antenna on top of the house and it eventually ends up as one ethernet cord in the basement. That may or may not be irrelevant. Anyway, I plug that cord into a router, LINKSYS BEFSR41 (it's a couple years old but it has always worked fine), and set up a LAN with the main computer being an HP pavilion a1133w w/ win XP SP 2 media center. There isn't another computer connected all the time, but I use various other machines on the network off and on (PS3, macbook, other people's computers that I'm working on for whatever reason). Recently, we've had several severe storms and flooding and whatnot, and last night, the internet suddenly quit working. I assumed it was the ISP until this morning when I called them and they said the problem was definitely on my end. My first thought was router, so I bypassed it and plugged my macbook directly into the ethernet cord from the antenna. It worked, and I thought I'd pick up a new one when the flooding subsided and I could get into town and then everything would work fine. I really need the internet on the main computer, however, so I did the same for it, plugging it directly into the incoming internet. The pavilion continued to say that the LAN was unplugged, however. I've gone through every setting and troubleshooting I can think of, but nothing I've done will make the internet work on the pavilion. ipconfig/all says media state...discon... Read more

From the results posted its saying you aren't connected to the Route and also do not have a default gateway which is why you can't connect to the internet also. Disable any firewalls and try power cycling everything.

I am running Avira Free and PC Tools Firewall plus on my Toshiba NB205 with Windows XP. THis computer accesses the internet wirelessly through a Verizon FIOS router. Had encountered some slow internet performance and ran a full system scan with Avira - 10 detections were found and Avira advised that some windows components were damaged and to install the XP SP3 CD (which of course I don't have - but I do have an old XP system CD). I was getting poorer and poorer internet connectivity until finally no connection. I ran the IE Diagnose Connection Problems multiple times. The logs - which I've lost indicated WinSock and LSP issues. I've run various winsock repair tools, reset the TCP/IP, but don't seem to have any luck. Appreciate any help you could offer.

Over the last few days it has become impossible for me to connect to the internet on my computer, I get the network show and get a very good signal strength and I am apparently connected but cannot actually do anything such as search the web or do anything that requires internet access, this is the same for the laptop in the house too.
We never had any problems until a few days ago when it jus stopped working randomly, we didnt alter anything so this is very confusing. Our router model is Edimax BR-6216Mg. Any help regarding this would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.
