Virtualization recommendation ??

Q: Virtualization recommendation ??

Before they close the door the end of the month, I wasted $40 and got a Windows 8 .iso and key. I want to install it in a virtual system - just to keep up with you guys,

In the past I have always used Virtual Box which served me well. But recently I had a lot of problems with the networking in the host system because vBox always seemed to monopolize the IP address.

So I am looking for the best alternative. My system has an i7, 8GB of RAM and a SSD that is half empty. So there should not be any problem from the hardware side. What is important to me is that I can run the virtual system and the host seemlessly side by side.

If you are running Windows 8 in virtual, let me know what you recommend.

Note: I posted this also on the Windows 7 forum.

I recommend trying the free service from Zip Cloud. It's currently our users' favorite backup and storage solution and will save you headaches down the line.

You can get it direct from this link http://goo.gl/rFYDxc. (This link will open the Zip Cloud homepage.)

As far as I know there are two great players on the VM ware market. Virtual Box and VMWare. Considering the fact that you have had some issues with Virtual Box why don't you give VMWare a chance?

Most of my work applications don't work on Windows 7 or 8, and when I connect to my office VPN it takes me off the Internet so we use virtualization right now to run Windows separately.

XP is fine as I have licences for it but does anyone have any recommendations on which the best virtualization software tends to be? I'm using Hyper-V right now but I hate it. The resolution for XP is terrible, but the thing I really hate is that when you are inside of Hyper-V it captures the keyboard, so pressing ALT-TAB while in XP tabs between windows in XP versus tabbing out of Hyper-V to Windows 8 applications. I also can't CTRL-V to paste or copy, I have to choose the menu option and select to type clipboard etc.

I've used VMware before but I seem to remember it doing the same thing where it doesn't let you ALT-TAB out of the virtual machine. I guess there's just VirtualBox or whatever that Oracle one is but are there any other options? I know I can do VMware and use Unity or whatever it is but I prefer them in a separate window. Thanks!

A:Recommendation on virtualization software to run XP?

VMWare (not free), and Virtual (free) are the two best out there. VMWare is probably the best, however, it depends whether you willing to spend the money.

I am looking to virtualize our exchange 2007/AD. Has anyone has any success with this yet? I have been looking into VMware's products. Any input on that?

Here is what we have and where we want to go with it...
We only have and need one Server and Exchange. Medium sized (50 at most) company and not much of a load on the server at all. I want to virtualize it so that in the case of a hardware failure, it will automatically start up on a second server with minimal/no downtime. While there isnt much of a load, email/ad is still very important. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

hi folks,
I am running Vista x64 and would like to get the best out of the OS as I can, I only use it for gaming-downloading and watching film/TV shows, I have come across a setting in my Bios that is called Virtualization and it is turned on, have try'd to look it up and as far I can see it only needs to be on if you plan to run more than one OS ( witch I don't ) , So would it benefit me to turn it off?

Cheers for any info if you have some.

Hi johnmunch, yes you are right. Virtualization means you can run a guest OS within a host OS. Its useless and i would recommend you to turn it off as you run only one OS.

A:What Is "virtualization"?

Virtualization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaIn computing, virtualization is a broad term that refers to the abstraction of computer resources. One useful definition is "a technique for hiding the physical characteristics of computing resources from the way in which other systems, applications, or end users interact with those resources. This includes making a single physical resource (such as a server, an operating system, an application, or storage device) appear to function as multiple logical resources; or it can include making multiple physical resources (such as storage devices or servers) appear as a single logical resource."[

Ben Fathi, VP of Development in Microsoft's Windows Core Operating System Division comments:

By bringing full virtualization to the desktop operating environment, Microsoft could accomplish two rather lofty goals. First, virtualization is ideal for keeping one user from ruining or dominating any particular system while giving them near-full access to that same system. This would be a boon for multi-user systems such as the PC that's shared by a family or a business. In fact, much like "profiles" can move around an Active Directory environment today, with full virtualization, a complete "system" could follow you around, provided a minimum standard of hardware be met. Even better, system maintenance and patching could be standardized in mixed-hardware environments.

If it is a virtual drive software program it will allow you to make a drive like your CD-ROM to mount .ISO image files so you don't need the DVD or CD in your computer to play it
I use Daemon Tools for mine.

Hello,
I purchased  an Optiplex 760 SFF motherboard from ebay. I got the motherboard to work but I can not get the Virtualization to turn on. I know that  on most motherboard the virtualization  turn on the bios. I do not see on that option on this  motherboard. I am puzzled if the bios pickups the virtualization information from the CPU and then displays the virtualization option on the bios because if that is  the case the CPU that I have  (Pentium Dual Core) does not support virtualization. I am thinking of buying a chip that supports virtualization but if this board does not support virtualization it  make not sense in buying a new chip.  Any feed back on this question is appreciated.

Hello all, I have an AMD 8150 not OC'd, 8gb ram DDR3, and I run Windows 7 64bit and Ubuntu 64 bit on seperate drives. I do this due to past experience that if Ubuntu somehow becomes corrupt it seems to make booting into Windows difficult. I know I should learn to just prevent/fix that when it happens but it is easier for me to do it this way. I have run Window OS-VM's before using Ubuntu as a host, and liked the set up I just don't want to live in Ubuntu fulltime. I have Windows 8 and I want to move onto it....but...I have 7 set up just perfectly, it works flawlessly (my opinion of course), and am not ready to completely give it up. Toss on Ubuntu and now it becomes very cluttered. I would like to install 8 64 bit as the host on a 320gb hdd, install 7 and Ubuntu as VM's, give Win7 80-100gb and Ubuntu 50-70gb statically. I would enable the Virtualization within the bios so I could use more than just 1 core for the VM's.. Is this going to affect the performance of the host when I am not running a VM or only when I run the VM?? Oh I would use VirtualBox for the VM software.

Thanks
Scott

A:Virtualization Software

Hi Scott,
This should not affect the performance of your host. Windows 8 runs well with VirtualBox; it doesn't use many resources and I haven't noticed any host slowdown (win7 x64). In fact in my experience Windows 8 runs a lot smoother on VM than its predecessors.

Should I wait it out for Virtualbox to be fully Win10 compatible? Get VMWare either Workstation / or Player Pro? Or just upgrade my Windows to Pro and use Hyper-V.

I need to virtualize a gui distro so whatever is best suited for that, I like seamless mode.
