Virtualization recommendation ??

Q: Virtualization recommendation ??

Before they close the door the end of the month, I wasted $40 and got a Windows 8 .iso and key. I want to install it in a virtual system - just to keep up with you guys,

In the past I have always used Virtual Box which served me well. But recently I had a lot of problems with the networking in the host system because vBox always seemed to monopolize the IP address.

So I am looking for the best alternative. My system has an i7, 8GB of RAM and a SSD that is half empty. So there should not be any problem from the hardware side. What is important to me is that I can run the virtual system and the host seemlessly side by side.

If you are running Windows 8 in virtual, let me know what you recommend.

Note: I posted this also on the Windows 7 forum.

Preferred Solution: Virtualization recommendation ??

I recommend trying the free service from Zip Cloud. It's currently our users' favorite backup and storage solution and will save you headaches down the line.

You can get it direct from this link http://goo.gl/rFYDxc. (This link will open the Zip Cloud homepage.)

As far as I know there are two great players on the VM ware market. Virtual Box and VMWare. Considering the fact that you have had some issues with Virtual Box why don't you give VMWare a chance?

Most of my work applications don't work on Windows 7 or 8, and when I connect to my office VPN it takes me off the Internet so we use virtualization right now to run Windows separately.

XP is fine as I have licences for it but does anyone have any recommendations on which the best virtualization software tends to be? I'm using Hyper-V right now but I hate it. The resolution for XP is terrible, but the thing I really hate is that when you are inside of Hyper-V it captures the keyboard, so pressing ALT-TAB while in XP tabs between windows in XP versus tabbing out of Hyper-V to Windows 8 applications. I also can't CTRL-V to paste or copy, I have to choose the menu option and select to type clipboard etc.

I've used VMware before but I seem to remember it doing the same thing where it doesn't let you ALT-TAB out of the virtual machine. I guess there's just VirtualBox or whatever that Oracle one is but are there any other options? I know I can do VMware and use Unity or whatever it is but I prefer them in a separate window. Thanks!

A:Recommendation on virtualization software to run XP?

VMWare (not free), and Virtual (free) are the two best out there. VMWare is probably the best, however, it depends whether you willing to spend the money.

I am looking to virtualize our exchange 2007/AD. Has anyone has any success with this yet? I have been looking into VMware's products. Any input on that?

Here is what we have and where we want to go with it...
We only have and need one Server and Exchange. Medium sized (50 at most) company and not much of a load on the server at all. I want to virtualize it so that in the case of a hardware failure, it will automatically start up on a second server with minimal/no downtime. While there isnt much of a load, email/ad is still very important. Any suggestions?

hi folks,
I am running Vista x64 and would like to get the best out of the OS as I can, I only use it for gaming-downloading and watching film/TV shows, I have come across a setting in my Bios that is called Virtualization and it is turned on, have try'd to look it up and as far I can see it only needs to be on if you plan to run more than one OS ( witch I don't ) , So would it benefit me to turn it off?

Cheers for any info if you have some.

Hi johnmunch, yes you are right. Virtualization means you can run a guest OS within a host OS. Its useless and i would recommend you to turn it off as you run only one OS.

A:What Is "virtualization"?

Virtualization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaIn computing, virtualization is a broad term that refers to the abstraction of computer resources. One useful definition is "a technique for hiding the physical characteristics of computing resources from the way in which other systems, applications, or end users interact with those resources. This includes making a single physical resource (such as a server, an operating system, an application, or storage device) appear to function as multiple logical resources; or it can include making multiple physical resources (such as storage devices or servers) appear as a single logical resource."[

Hey folks,

I may be completely aware that support for Windows XP has ended this month, but I wanted to know what are some of the ways to keep Windows XP running past its expiry date?

The reason that I'm asking is that I have a client (which is a small corporate supplies/legal firm) that I had dealt in the past for the "on-call technical support" (meaning, whenever they have a problem concerning their IT concerns, I simply drop by and fix their issues for them).

Some of their machines still run on Windows XP and they utilize certain software that is normally designed to run on that OS. One example of that software program is called "Pointforce Enterprise", which is a supply chain/inventory control program developed by a company called "Tecsys".

A search of that program popped up some answers for the "compatibility" of Pointforce Enterprise (along with another program called "Winsol") on Windows 7. However, the only Windows 7 versions that support Pointforce Enterprise are (both 32 and 64-bit) :

- Windows 7 Professional
- Windows 7 Ultimate
- Windows 7 Enterprise

I haven't completely ruled out if either Pointforce Enterprise (or Winsol) will be compatible with Windows 8 (or 8.1) - unless I can install Windows XP - through the use of a virtual machine. In that case, I install "Virtualbox" on the physical machine running the newer version of Windows.

I also wanted out to find a way on how to tran... Read more

A:XP Virtualization advice

A law firm should not be running on a old outdated OS due to the security risk. Having them still try and use XP would not be my recommendation.

Windows 7 Professional has compatibility mode which should run your software in Windows XP mode.

You could setup a VM but running Windows XP still offers that security risk.

Do these program need to be online? If not then the simple fix is allow XP to stay on the system but remove it from the internet.

Alright, I am trying to find out if a computer I have is compatible with Microsofts Virtualzation, so I can run my Windows XP compatable programs. Here are the details.

The Machine is an Acer Aspire 5517.
The Operating System Windows 7 64-bit Home Edition.
The Processor is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-42, 1600 Mhz 2 Cores, 2 Logical Processors.

Now the plan is supposed to go as so. Upgrade to Windows 7 64-bit Professional Edition so it is compatible to Microsoft Virtualzation program. This program is found at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/

First though I need to make sure the processor is up to the task. I ran the test, which can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir.../download.aspx at Step #2. It returned the Error, Hardware-Assisted Virtualization is not enabled on this computer.

Now NORMALLY this means, go into the BIOS, and enable it. But Either I am not getting into the BIOS (Which i dont believe is the case, i have pounded both f2, and f10, got same menu :P), Or the option to enable is not there. If you click on the Microsofts website, it "informs" you that the Hardware-assisted virtualization is pre-enabled on all Acers that are capable... So either I need informed how to get into the BIOS (which is not likly to be the problem, I've Delt with other BIOS, just not on an ACER< and im pretty sure I was looking at the BIOS), or informed up to update my BIOS to unlock the option to enable the hardware-assis... Hello all, I have an AMD 8150 not OC'd, 8gb ram DDR3, and I run Windows 7 64bit and Ubuntu 64 bit on seperate drives. I do this due to past experience that if Ubuntu somehow becomes corrupt it seems to make booting into Windows difficult. I know I should learn to just prevent/fix that when it happens but it is easier for me to do it this way. I have run Window OS-VM's before using Ubuntu as a host, and liked the set up I just don't want to live in Ubuntu fulltime. I have Windows 8 and I want to move onto it....but...I have 7 set up just perfectly, it works flawlessly (my opinion of course), and am not ready to completely give it up. Toss on Ubuntu and now it becomes very cluttered. I would like to install 8 64 bit as the host on a 320gb hdd, install 7 and Ubuntu as VM's, give Win7 80-100gb and Ubuntu 50-70gb statically. I would enable the Virtualization within the bios so I could use more than just 1 core for the VM's.. Is this going to affect the performance of the host when I am not running a VM or only when I run the VM?? Oh I would use VirtualBox for the VM software.

A:Virtualization Software

Hi Scott,
This should not affect the performance of your host. Windows 8 runs well with VirtualBox; it doesn't use many resources and I haven't noticed any host slowdown (win7 x64). In fact in my experience Windows 8 runs a lot smoother on VM than its predecessors.
