Computer boots, but monitor doesn't display anything

Q: Computer boots, but monitor doesn't display anything

I've been fighting this problem for months and haven't found an answer anywhere but maybe you guys can help. My computer seems to boot fine, but nothing is displayed on the monitor. The power light on the monitor ON button just blinks amber. If I wait a minute or so and then hit the reset button the computer reboots and the monitor comes on. The computer started doing this about 6 months after I built it. Once in a great while it will boot up on the first try, but it's very rare. I was thinking video card, but have unseated and reseated it a couple of times to no avail. I also got a new battery on the motherboard thinking it was having a problem. Now I'm thinking power supply or BIOS - any ideas?

Specs:
2.8Ghz Intel p4
Radeon 9600 pro
ASUS p4p800 MB
1 GB of Micron ram
QMAX 350W power supply

Thanks in advance for any help.

Preferred Solution: Computer boots, but monitor doesn't display anything

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ive spent a good while searching for anyone having the same problem, while some are similar mine is different in that, when I get up in the morning and boot up my computer my monitor acts like my computer is off as it does when I shut down the computer but leave the monitor on, the power light flashes and thats it. I know my computer is booting because I hear the windows song and one of the pop up things I have once I am to my desktop. I have no choice but to hard shut down my computer but when I boot it the 2nd time the monitor works just fine, its been doing this for the past 3 days, anyone know whats going on here?

I'm kind of stuck here...

First what happened: last night my computer froze so I turned it off and then back on. However, when I did, the monitor just remained in standby as if the computer was not on. Everything on the computer seems to be working ok (fans going, lights on, etc). I also don't hear any beeps during the startup.

I've been browsing a lot of forums trying to figure out what is wrong, but I'm somewhat lost. I don't know that much about computers...
It seems some of these forums say the main culprits for a problem like this are the graphics card or the motherboard? Is this true?

Since every thread always has someone asking for specs - here they are:
Intel i7 940
Asus p6t intel x58 chipset sle/crossfirex mainboard triple-channel x
800w power supply
1 TB SATA II 3.0 gb 7200rpm HD
3 x 2GB DDR3 PC3 PC1333
1 x EVGA nvdia gtx 260 896mb pci-e
windows vista home premium

What I've done so far:
I have tried unplugging it and holding down the power button in the front for about 1 minute. 90% of the time this did nothing. One time it started to boot correctly with the monitor only to freeze during the windows load up bar and 1 other time it didn't even make it that far...
I have tried using another monitor on the computer. Same problem. I have also tried using my main monitor on another computer and it works fine.

I have been running this setup for almost 2 years, and nothing has been changed recently...

I ordered and today received a new Gateway DX4831 07 Window 7 Desktop Computer and a new FHX2300 23 inch Gateway Monitor. I connected the monitor and computer in accordance (I used the HDMI cable connection between the computer and the monitor) with the included documentation double checked the connections and then turned on the monitor first and then powered up the computer. The monitor displays Gateway for a second or two and then after about 10 seconds it quickly displays no signal before going completely black. Upon turning on the computer, it beeps once and then after about a minute I hear a whirring sound as if the hard drive is turning. After that, the computer is very quiet (as I have read in reviews that it should be), but the monitor remains black no matter how long I leave the computer on. This is the second Gateway DX4831 07 I have ordered/received in the last two weeks. The first one did the same thing and I sent it back and reordered the same model hoping the second one would work. I really want to keep this computer rather than send it back a second time since it is full of features for the price. Gateway’s support is virtually nonexistent so this is not a reasonable option. All I can do is return it for a full refund within 30 days of purchase. Can you tell what the problem is likely to be and how I can solve it so that I can keep this computer. I’ve read in some of the online reviews that opening up the case won’t like void the warranty but I have not dare... Read more

Well I am frustrated and I really don't understand what is going on.
I bought this computer about 1 month ago, and have had problems with this computer ever since. So the problem that I have had the whole time, is that the monitor will either lose its signal. At first, it was about 30 minutes to an hour before it just lost the signal. Then, I got some new RAM. Nothing changed, in fact it got a little worse. Next, I bought a new power supply. Nothing changed. Then, I bought a new hard drive. Nothing changed. This whole time, I would try consistently every day to get my computer to work. During that whole time, the computer would lose the signal faster and faster. Then, about a week ago, it wouldn't get past the bios screen. Then today, I received a brand new motherboard. Now there is no display, no matter what. Also, I have tried using my computer without my dedicated graphics card, using the onboard graphics. Same result. Also, before you tell me to get a refund, its too late. I bought this off of eBay, so there was only a 7 day return policy. I am absolutely stumped, I really don't know what is wrong with it. The new motherboard doesn't boot at all, the fans just turn on at full power, and there is no display. I also don't believe that the dvd drive can mess up anything.
I really appreciate your help,
Alec

I'm not the most knowledgable person when it comes to computers so please answer as if Explaining to a 10 year old. My computer just completely powered down while I was surfing the web, upon rebooting The screen on my monitor (currently using my tv and connected by HDMI cable) was blank despite the PC appearing to boot up normally. I.E. All fans were running lights displayed on the outside of the machine and even internal fans and systems began to run but there is just no display on my tv. I tried unplugging the system with the power switch set to off and waiting for 10 minutes and rebooting but to no avail. All the websites I check are so unhelpful, I'm a really smart guy with an engineering degree so I'm sure with jus a little bit of guidance and some help from someone who knows what they are doing I can sort this out on my own w/o having to send it back to the company.

Hi Tech Support Guys and Gals,
I was using my Hp laptop and the screen randomly froze. I manually powered off the computer and now when I turn it on, I hear one longer beep followed by two short ones. In addition, the screen doesn't work. If I let the computer keep working and boot up, I eventually hear the welcome screen theme play so it seems like the computer keeps functioning, but the monitor won't work. Any ideas? serveral days my computer just got a problem.
Its monitor won't display anything even though my computer is on.
(LED green light on the monitor is keep blinking, even though the comp is on)
Also, there is no beep sound when it happens.
So I have to turn my computer on and off (also restart (reset button) many times. and sometimes (rarely) When monitor starts to display, it shows that my cpu is overclocked at the wrong speed (1100 instead of 2500). I have to either re-overclock or press restart button in order to get CPU running at the correct speed.
It's like 8 out of 10 times (that) my monitor won't display anything even though my cpu is on.
I also open my computer case, checking fan, heat sink, power supply.
They're working fine. Heat sink and CPU fan is actively running. Power supply is working. Green Light on motherboard is on.
I also unseated and reseated graphic card. It wouldn't work.
I tried reseating RAM. It did work for a while then the problem came back.
I haven't updated or changed any setting on my computer before this happened.

Here is a specification of my computer
PSU 300watt
Motherboard: ASUS A7N8X
CPU: AMD Athlon 2500+
Ram: 2 GB DDR
OS: WIndows XP SP2
Graphic Card: nVidia GeForce FX 5200 128 MB

Any one know how to solve this problem or having a similar problem?
Thank you

It all started when I put my faulty power supply from my other pc on this one. THe computer gradually started shutting down, then at startup when it said COMPAQ, all the pixels where weird and displaced in random locations and the monitor would display black (but ON nonetheless), so me and my dad assumed it was the PSU.
Bought a new power supply, still same problem. Thought it was the video car (8600gts nvidia), bought a new GPU (ati 5550 1gb ddr3). Now the computer doesn't display anything on the monitor, the monitor acts as if there's no information being sent to it so it goes to standby mode. Replaced DVI cables, same problem, swapped monitors same problem.

I have no idea what it is at this point. Would someone please help me out?

Thank you.

PS: the computer also does not make that beeping sound at start up anymore, if that helps.

I am typing this on my old computer. I wanted to put my new computer (which is a windows 8 hp desktop) into safe mode because i thought i had a virus and wanted to go into safe mode to see if i did. So i select the option to go into safe mode in the computer (i did the msconfig option being that i just didn't know another way to boot it into safe mode). The computer restarts and when it booted up again, my computer monitor is not showing anything at all. It is just a black screen. The light on the computer monitor is just flashing instead of staying solid like it usually does. I can't get out of safe mode because i just can't see anything at all. What do i do?

Reinstall your OS.
Get a paid version of Macrium Reflect. {for the boot time recovery environment}
Image your OS when things are running good.
Sit back & relax since you can now reinstall your OS with very little effort & time.

Hey everyone, I'm in dire need of some help with my PC. The computer turns on fine, and boots up (can hear the windows start up tune) but I can't see anything on the monitor. Here's the details:

I was playing a computer game on friday, and during that it crashed. I have no idea if this is when things started or not, but I restarted and it was fine.

On sunday I had another crash, only the screen flickered once or twice and there were green pixel lines going from top to bottom of the monitor , about 2 inches apart in a perfect pattern. When I restarted, there were no graphics on the monitor. The light was flashing indicating it was on power saving mode.

I took the computer apart, unplugged everything, and put it all back together, and for whatever reason it worked fine for about 6 hours.

The next day I turned the computer on, and it loaded fine, but shortly after there was the return of the green pixel lines, with the added addition of the top left corner of the screen being filled with green pixelated triangles in a perfect pattern. These were flickering furiosly.

I tried restarting my computer, and again I got no graphics posted to the monitor. However the computer booted up fine, and I heard the start up tune, and 5 minutes later I shut it down by pressing the "Power Off" button on my keyboard.

I tried another monitor and again, got nothing. I then tried taking the computer apart and putting it back together again, only this time it didn'... Read more

A:Graphics card doesn't post any graphics to my monitor, computer boots up fine

Its usually just the graphics cards, they do fail especially if they overheat - then video card fan not speeding up might have been the problem - most are dynamic and should actually speed up under load. Depending on the manufacturer of your 8800GTX you might be able to get it replaced under warranty if they have a 3 year or greater warranty.

Have you checked the back of the monitor or the PC if there are any cables that are a little bit hanging out or loose. Try doing that, another thing that could possibly help is to disconnect every single cable and then re-connect them again. Usually whenever I have any problem with starting my computer and nothing happens, this is usually the first thing I go to before I do anything else.

If it works when you connect the monitor to the onboard port, it seems to me you have already narrowed the problem down to either the video card or perhaps a failing pw supply.
Install the card in another system to test if the card works. You can also monitor your temps and voltages. Since this is a big box system, you will not have purpose designed monitoring software like you would have with an asus, gigabyte or other high end motherboard. You will have to use something like hwinfo64, coretemp or other generic monitoring software.

Hello, Here's the problem:My computer will boot up but nothing will show on the display. Also, the mouse and keyboard seemingly are not on. There is no beeping from the computer, nor any flashing lights. All fans are working as well. Here's what I've tried:I first to see if the monitor was the problem by using it with another computer. It worked completely fine, which makes me assume it's not the monitor.I tried power resetting where I unplugged everything, pressed and held the power button for 15 seconds plus, hooked everything back up (just keyboard, mouse, display, and power), and turned it back on; same result. I did that with also doing the same thing with the monitor, where I pulled out the power cable from the monitor and left it for 30 seconds; same result. Including the onboard graphics, my computer has a video card, and I tried resetting power and hooking up the display to both at separate tries; same result.I tried restting BIOS and CMOS by moving the jumper on the mobo, discharging the computer, and also removing the CMOS battery and discharging that time as well; both tactics with the same result. What happened before this problem:I reformatted the computer, and I installed windows and basic programs. When I tried to open one of the programs, my computer froze and so I had to do a hard shut off. And now I have this problem. Not really sure what the problem is, hoping someone can help. Thank you in advance!

Hello,

Basically I put together this PC today, all should work fine, the MOBO supports the RAM, CPU etc.

Problem I am having is when I turn the computer on, after a few seconds I get one beep (Which I believe means everything is OK) But the monitor just displays 'No signal'. I've tried using a DVI monitor and a D-Sub monitor, each one has been tried in the Gfx card slots and mobo slots, yet no success..

I've done so many searches on google it's unbelievable, but nothing I have found has worked.

I've tried placing each stick on ram individually into different slots etc, that doesn't change anything. (One stick at a time). All fans are definitly working, light on mobo shows power to board, HDD's are working and DVD Drive is too. The gfx card has power to it as the fan is going (There's no slots on the card to provide power, it draws it from the mobo it seems).

Any ideas?

Hello,
I would greatly appreciate help with my problem. My PC, an Acer Aspire AM5641-U5630A with Windows Vista, only starts up sometimes. When I press the power button, the blue power light comes on and the fans start sounding. However, after it quiets down there is no beeping noises and a display does not come on. On times in which the computer does turn on, a beeping noise is heard and an Acer logo display comes on before it proceeds to start up like normal. Once I'm past the Acer logo the computer works fine. It seems to be random as to when it powers up but I have tried an upwards of 20 restarts before.

Thanks,

Hi, i recently forgot my password to my computer and my bro was trying to fix it he is the geek not me i have no clue??
SO we tried a number of techniques I can't remeber from the internet and he did some crap that i coulnd't figure out as i said im technicly retarded when it comes to this stuff.
SO we tried to remove the battery out of the MB he said it would reset the memory or some crap. So we did that but to get to the battery i removed the Graphics Card. we succesfully removed the battery and replaced it after 30 seconds. We put the Graphics back in and i plugged the computer with all cords in and turned it on.

It turned on alright no weird sounds but the moniter didn't diplay anything, the LED was amber so i turned the monitor off and on and the LED came up blue. but it said No Signal - Digital. I tried my screen on my bros pc and the screen worked. so i no it isnt the screen, btw we used the same cord and everything.
I don't know what the problem is and i was thinking since it isnt the screen it might be the GFX card or the MB.
My specs are 80gig HDD
8500GT nivedia GFX card

Is there maybe a place I can go to download drivers that can fix the problem, or is my monitor blown?

A:My Monitor doesn't display red...

I doubt it's a software problem. First shut off the computer. Then try disconnecting the monitor from the computer. Look at the end of the cable. Do you see any bent pins? Try connecting it again. Turn the computer on. If you still don't have any red, then the red gun inside the monitor is probably shot. You'll have to replace the monitor.

Problem now is that during to boot process it wont see the HD. If i go into the bios and leave it on Auto select for where the HD is it'll show, but it takes about 30seconds to do so. I cant boot with a start-up disk either, for some reason it wont. i changed boot sequences unpluged things nothing will work. I cant flash the bios becuase it wont read for the A drive. I cant get a A: or a C: prompt. the only thing i can get is a BOOT FAILURE ERROR.
the system is a PII 400, 13gig western digital HD, 128mb ram, Asus p3v133 motherboard. win98

I have everything set to the correct master/slave settings ( i tried a bunch of different combs of them. ) i'm lost. i've done all i can. now i need help. thx

Hey all.

Around a week ago, while using my Dell Dimension 9200, the screen would go black for a couple of seconds and then come back, displaying an error in the bottom right of the screen about my graphics card (NVIDIA 7900).

A couple of days ago it did the same thing, but instead of coming back on it stayed black. I turned the power off, left it for a short while, and when I turned it back on everything was returned to normal.

However, today the screen isn't returning. I've unplugged everything, restarted over and over -- nothing. The screen is just displaying black. The PC is starting up fine (in that I can hear it), but there's no output on the screen.

Pressing a couple of buttons on the screen displays the following message:
2: Digital Input
In Power Save Mode
Press computer button
or any key on keyboard or move mouse

The screen itself is working perfectly fine on the Analog Input as I also use it to run my Wii, and I've absoloutely no problems with that.

Please could someone help me!

Thank you.

A:Monitor doesn't display anyting

Sounds like the video card may be toast on you! The warning about the card was the hardware failure detection Dell apparently has inplace and why you were seeing that appear. On custom builds in most cases a long beep followed by two short depending on bios is what you typically hear at post time when a card fails.

The one way to find out if this is the case would be using another card. Since everything else seems to be running normal this is what to look at there. If the picture returns with the substitute or replacement card you've found the problem. If still under warranty you would need to bring it back or send it in to be covered.

Check your DVI cable for bent pins at each end. For test purposes try to get another DVI cable and see if it will work.

Hi guys,

I just built my new desktop with the exactly same stuffs from this page (http://www.techspot.com/guides/buying/page3.html) except i use onboard soundcard.

i connecting the monitor's cable to the graphic card by the DVI to VGA/D-sub Adapter that came with the card.

but there is no display on the monitor. Also the graphic card fan run very loud and there are two red LED light on the back of the card. CPU fan also not running.

At the first time i thought something might wrong with the power connectors so i tried to reorganize the power connectors but the result still the same.

Please help....... :blackeye:

A:New desktop, monitor doesn't display

i assume there's a VGA port on your graphic's card as well. Have you already tried just running a vga cable to the monitor to see the card is otherwise working? Also, not sure if applicable, but just fyi..... someone with similar problem with no monitor display indicated their issue was traced back to the DVI / VGA adapter. Once adapter replaced they could run off the DVI port

I have a strange issue with my monitor. When I turn my computer on, sometimes it will show the BIOS splash screen and other times it won't. This seems to also always happen if I restart.

Its like the monitor doesn't realise there is anything to display then when it kicks in, its too late to show it. Is there any reason for it to show it sometimes but not others?

Hi -

Have you tried connecting an external monitor when attempting to display the BIOS? If it works, this would instantly tell us your faulty hardware/issue; your monitor. If it doesn't work, then.. I'll see.

I've just built this computer a few days ago, and occasionally the monitor doesn't seem to want to display anything. For instance, when you turn the PC on, you will see the motherboard manufacturer's logo, then it says "Starting Windows", then when it would normally switch to my login screen, it doesn't -- just darkness.

It only seems to happen when the monitor is "switching" to another mode (perhaps resolutions). I feel as if the monitor isn't receiving the signal from the video card quickly enough and for some reason doesn't continue to try to look for a signal. Just a thought.

I don't think it's the monitor, as this monitor works fine, has worked fine for years, not to mention the brand new monitor I bought a week ago and had to return was doing the same thing before I realized it was broken (if my memory serves me correctly).

I'm using a GeForce GTX 460 1GB with 280.26 driver. This is the first and only driver I've downloaded, as well as the newest one released.

What do you guys think? Should I reinstall the driver? Should I maybe try an older driver? This one isn't beta.

A:Monitor decides it doesn't want to display?

The first step would be verification with another monitor.

You can try updating/downgrading the drivers, or simply uninstall the nVidia drivers and test with the Windows drivers.

Check if the power cords are attached correctly.
Probably your monitor does not support the GeForce 9600 GT or it needs some drivers to work properly. Check through the manufacturer's website.

HiI've recently purchased the above laptop.  I treid to connect to a few different monitors USB to USB without any success.  I then purchased an HDMI to USB C adaptor so I could link by that method.  The laptop does not recognise the monitors and the monitors do not recognise the 'USB Device' ie laptop.  I have also tried downloading various drivers from this site without any change to the outcome.  Any ideas?

Hi. Welcome to the Forum

I don't have that machine, it looks very nice   According to the specs it has "1 x Type-C Thunderbolt" which is very modern, I don't have much experience with Thunderbolt.

I would try first to run "Lenovo Vantage" and run an update on the computer drivers and firmware.

Here it is also the support site for that model to get the drivers by hand. You can also check if Lenovo Vantage forgot to update any newer driver.
https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/700-series/720s-13ikb-type-81bv/dow...

I would like to have more experience with this model, USB monitors and Thundebolt to help you more with this subject.

Hi guys

Upon upgrading to windows 10 I've noticed that my display size got smaller. screen resolution does not match my screen monitor borders. Resolution is currently set to 1920X1080 and I still have gaps of 1-2 cm from monitor borders, resolution doesn't fully fit my monitor as it use to in windows 8.1.

Methods I've tried solving this so far:

- Deleting graphic drivers from windows device manger and let windows set it own drives
- Playing around with windows global scaling (doesn't help only the icons/apps gets bigger)
- Installing fresh updated drivers from Intel/Nvidia
- Playing around with all resolution sizes and options

any ideas on how to fix it?

A:Display/resolution doesn't fit monitor borders

What kind of graphics card are you using? If you have current drivers and applications, there should be a console you can open to adjust it.
Nvidia control panel is in the pane that opens when I right-click on the desktop and it allows resolutions that fit my screen, that are not necessarily 19x10.

Hello, I have a LG M2432 monitor and a ATI RADEON HD 3450 video card on my old computer. When I try to select 1920x1080 it essentialy says "Format not supported" and reverts back. The monitor right now is at 1600x1200, which is terrible on my eyes. I've installed the drivers for both the monitor and the video card.

The computer I'm using is older (3+ years) and has frustrated me a few times, most notably in the past 2 months.

That said, this is a new problem. My second (DVI) monitor is detected by Windows but doesn't display anything. In both the display settings and the NVIDIA control panel, I can see a second (Impression) monitor, but it's blank and I can't get it to show anything. In fact, the monitor doesn't seem to recognize that it's connected, because the orange "power but no input" light is on rather than the green "power and input" light.

This is a Windows 7 64-bit installation on a Dell Dimension E520.

Any help you can give me is much appreciated - I want my productivity back!

Thanks in advance,

What graphics card are you using?

Do both monitors work if connected individually? Have you tried swapping the monitor on ports to see if the problem follows the monitor?

Uninstall and reinstall the graphics driver.

hello guys! I dunno if this is the right thread..
ok so here is my problem.. I open device manager to check whether all my drivers were updated and noticed that my monitor displays "generic PnP monitor". so I right click on it and choose update driver, now windws 7 recognize my monitor but the problem is whenever I preview my photos( any photos, jpg png), the background color of window photo viewer became color yellow(which is supposedly white). Same goes when Im using adobe photoshop cs3, my background color is supposedly white but it became color yellow, but I was surprised when I print all the image I edit on photoshop because the colors were correct! so I assume my monitor has a problem. I try to uninstall my monitor's driver and that solve the problem. But I dont think that's the proper way of fixing it? so guys what could be the problem? is it really okay not to install my monitor's driver?

btw my monitor is AOC e2243Fw
my pc specs are: (if needed)
mobo: Gigabyte H61m S2 B3
CPU: i5 2400k
