Micro-Stuttering After Days of Power-On Time

Q: Micro-Stuttering After Days of Power-On Time

For the most part, I finally got Windows 10 to work, except I have a micro-stuttering problem after just a few days of power-on time. I also have a WD My Cloud on my home network, so I'm wondering, does backing up to cloud storage have a negative impact on my system performance?

Recently I have been noticing frequent micro stuttering when I use my computer. It's most noticeable when I do things like dragging windows around on my desktop. or in games when things are moving. Every few seconds, movement of these things will stutter very briefly. For example, when I try dragging a window in a circular motion, the motion should be smooth and continuous. But right now, as I do that, it will stutter briefly every could of seconds. I have no idea why it's doing that. I've updated my drivers, and everything and optimized my disk. I don't know what else I should do.

Thanks for all the help in advance.

Heya. I am new around here so please excuse my ignorance when it comes to troubleshooting. I recently made a PC last month for the holidays. It is an absolute beast of a machine. It runs a Ryzen 9 3900x, a Corsair H100i RGB Platinum, a Corsair Hx1000 psu, a MSI MPG x570 Gaming Edge WiFi, a MSI 2080 Ti Gaming X Trio, some G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) (I got 2 of them to get 32 GB of memory), a Samsung 970 EVO plus, and a WD Black 4TB. Anyway, when I initially booted the system, there were no issues involved. Which was great. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago, and I made a really bad mistake of downloading something called Driver Booster 7. I wanted to make sure I had the latest drivers installed on my machine and I had good experience with other driver updater software. However, a day later, I started to get these stutters which would not go away. I tried everything I knew I could do to solve this issue. But to no luck. The only way these stutters go away is if I shut down my system and start it again. If I put my system to sleep, my monitor shuts down normally, but I still see my PC not shutting down. Then I tried to restart my PC. And then I get the BSOD. Always the same code : DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE. I tried to look for ways to stop that but to no avail. Can anyone help me?

Hi, about a week ago I noticed my games fps is much lower and jumpy. I have a Logitech app that shows my gpu, cpu usage and the gpu jumps from 0% usage up to usually 60-70 and sometimes up to 90 while the temp is fine at around 55-65C it's kinda hard to explain but I usually had around 350 fps on CSGO and now I'm getting 50-200 with micro lag spikes and really sudden fps jumps. I tried replacing my gpu and still have this problem, I don't want to be replacing all these parts unless I know what part it is or if I can fix it without replacing anything. I also tested on games like Rust, Minecraft, with the same problem.
I have built this PC about a year ago with no problems until now.

Good day,
I have recently discovered that my laptop (running Windows 10 now) is suffering from a form of millisecond-stuttering or lag spikes (whatever floats your boat to call it)
I have done quite some research on it already, so you don't have to do it.

So, the laptop is a Lenovo Z50-70 (compatible with Windows 10)
I have performed a clean install of Windows 10 on it. Everything went smooth and still is running smooth, except for the issue I'm currently describing.
However, this issue did not occur after the clean installation. It occured before that already. It occured after upgrading to Windows 10 in a whole. (didn't occur back on Windows 8.1) I hoped it would be gone after my planned clean install, but it didn't.

To describe the issue in more detail:
The only way I could perceive it was through anything that is sound-related. Watching a video for example:
When someone in the video says "tenforums dot com"; when a lag spike occurs, it may sound like "terrrrnforums dot com" or "tenforrrrums dorrrt com", depending on when it happens.
Such a lag-spike / stutter is indeed very Micro, as it happens for a real fraction of a second.
All of this may not sound as a major issue to you, but it is quite an annoyance, especially when watching/editing videos and music.
I have observed the Performance tab in the task manager aswell. Whenever such a lag-spike occurs, there is no sign of increase in CPU usage or RAM usage.

Now, the following might sound l... Read more

Hi @Sonar637

I cannot see how you would be harmed by reflashing the new BIOS.

If you have Macrium Reflect (and you should). Take a system image of your C: drive, and then reflash the bios.

Try and see if you still have the same issues. I'll be happy to continue to help you if the micro-stuttering continues after you reflash the lastest BIOS.

Every time I listen to music or watch a video my computer seems to freeze or stutter for just a second. During this time the music screeches and everything hangs. I don't know if this only occurs when listening to music or watching a video, but it is the only time I notice.

I have tried disk defrag, updating drivers, cleaning my registry, disabling AVG resident shield and nothing seems to work. It is getting really annoying, so if anyone has any suggestion please let me know and thank you in advance.

A:Computer Micro Freezing/Stuttering

Hi -

I suggest playing a song or video and shortly following the stuttering/freezing right- clicking on the taskmbar (at bottom) and selecting 'Task manager'.

This will open a new window in which J want you to switch to the 'Processes' tab at the top. Then expand the window and click on the bar that says 'Mem Usage'. The highest process should be listed at the top, in your reply post the top 4 processes along with their name and memory usage. It might be that your CPU is struggling to keep up.

Regards,

- Jon

Hey all.
I recently discovered a cause of micro stuttering I had been suffering from on most of my games which was repeated keystrokes. basically when strafing using WASD and moving the mouse it would create a micro stutter, where the keys repeating.

I managed to find a temporary fix using this

Enter the Ease of access centre (this can be accessed through Accessories after clicking Start), then click 'Make the Keyboard Easier to use'

Click 'Set Filter Keys'.

Click 'Set up Filter Keys'.

Click 'Turn on Repeat Keys and Slow Keys',and then on 'Set up Repeat Keys and Slow Keys'. Select the option to ignore all repeated keystrokes, and reduce the time option at the top to 0.0 seconds.
However, I still get a momentary stutter whenever I hit two keys. For example, strafing no longer stutters the entire time strafing but beginning to walk forward while strafing causes a brief stutter. Also, taking pressure off of the strafe key to continue to move forward also causes another brief stutter; it's aggravating.

I couldn't find any word if this can be fixed or if this is indeed the best remedy I have.

Thanks

A:Repeated Keystrokes cause micro stuttering

Well; Ive had the same issue in the past; and Ive discovered that its generally because of a lack of sufficient ram; or there is just barely enough available to provide function. You could try closing some programs and or background services that you dont need and see if that fixes the issue.

Do you have your monitor set so that it goes dark after a certain about of time with no keystrokes (20 minutes for me)?

hey guys,

i just bought a new M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard to enjoy great sound in a foobar2000 + flac combination.

i've successfully installed the Vista 32bit drivers in compatibility mode and everything worked fine until then.

after starting to listen to music, i've experienced that from time to time (doesn't matter if i do something with the PC or just leave it there only playing music) the sound starts hanging (and it sounds like stuttering) for 1-3 seconds. then it comes back to normal...and a few minutes later it happens again. it's VERY annoying...

tried playing with WMP (wasn't happy about it) but the same happens.
tried vista 64bit drivers but couldn't install them. tried old Windows XP SP2 drivers, installed fine but no sound.

any1 got any ideas?
am i the only one who has this issue? did i buy a broken soundcard?

please help.

thanx alot in advance

m-audio are not very 'windows' friendly. they really haven't released a decent driver for xp x64 yet, let alone vista. great cards for linux and apple though, and xp 32bit. i wonder if any of the E-MU options in this price range would fair better...you could always go usb/firewire gear for recording...

Hey guys, I have this problem where from time to time, my whole comp stutters, from the cursor, to the audio. I assume its because of the HDD because of two things:
1. My HDD light in my desktop stays constantly on for a second and this is when it operates fine. Then right after, it turns off for a split second and this corresponding second causes the whole comp to stop/ stutter. It will then start again. This cycle happens for sometimes 10 minutes or more, making the comp unsuable.
2. After one of these events happened, I looked at event viewer and saw in the problems this: "The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because of an IO failure on volume C: source: volsnap".
I assume I have bad sectors and volume shadow copy is amplifying the problem, but even after I scanned the HDD with the built in chckdisk, the problem still happens from time to time. Anyone have any ideas? I have a seagate 750 gb 7200 rpm drive.

Hello again Gentlemen,

I hope you are all well... I'm pretty well myself however I have a slight issue with my laptop. The one I'm writing on now...

I can't think of what's changed that would have caused the issue...

But every now and again (several times daily now) the damn thing locks up on me... almost 'stuttering'.

It's a Dell Inspiron 1750 by the way...

I first noticed it while watching a video file (.avi) in Windows Media Player... switched over to VLC media Player and it went ok for a little while but then had to start 'buffering'.

I started up Firefox and that was stuttering too... the stuttering would last 5 minutes but today I had to put up with it for 10.

Basically when it decides to go through this nonsense, I can move the mouse cursor around pretty much freely, it locks up a couple of times but it's hardly noticeable.

You can highlight various icons on the desktop too... but the moment you try and do something with it (open, or right-click) it joins the freeze.

Then after a few minutes, or however long... it goes back to normal. Like right now.

I first thought it was a disk space problem, but now I've freed up 15% and it's still happening.

I've run a defrag, spybot s&d, lavasoft adaware, security essentials and nothing's being picked up...

This is all turning me into a rather confused young gent, so I'm hoping one of you sirs might be able to provide some insight.

Should I be running both at the same time, or should I just run Trend Micro as my main protection and frequently scan with the free AVG 8.5? If I close out of the AVG and restart IE, it works more consistently.

Recently I've been having this issue where over time while I keep my laptop on, the audio playback starts to stutter as if the computer is about to blue screen.

The time between stutters lessens with time, to the point that watching youtube videos is a stutter fest.

This isn't just on youtube, practically anything that plays audio stutters including Skype and most games that I play.

In addition to the audio stutter, the video playback slows down slightly and the mouse movement becomes sluggish.

I've also had issues booting up smoothly, it always loads to the lock screen but every now and then when I try to pull it up with my mouse it lags out a bit before swiping up in three-ish frames.

In general, my computer feels a bit slower than it should be. I have a feeling it may be a driver issue, even though I've reinstalled my audio and video drivers several times. I'm hoping it's not a hardware issue, I've only had it since Christmas of last year.

My setup:

Aspire E 15 (E5-573G-52G3)
Windows 10, 64x
Intel Core i5-5200U
Nvidia GeForce 940M

Hi! Purely going by what you said, casts my mind back to being hacked on Windows XP. Perhaps check your task manager and see which processes are using your CPU and RAM? Mind you, l don't recall that ever telling me much when it happened to me.

Perhaps cast about for a Linux disc, boot up with it, and go into your Windows desktop through the Linux desktop, and backup your most important data, then proceed with caution, as it may not even be hackers / malware.

Hi,

All of the attached DMP files are of the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a) bug check.

This indicates that Microsoft Windows or a kernel-mode driver accessed paged memory at DISPATCH_LEVEL or above.

This bug check is issued if paged memory (or invalid memory) is accessed when the IRQL is too high. The error that generates this bug check usually occurs after the installation of a faulty device driver, system service, or BIOS.

Is this okay? I usually shut my laptop off every night before bed. But lately I have been having shutdown and start up problems. Something is causing Windows to hang during shutdown, and therefore I have to hold the power button down for it to turn off.
Doing this at night, then causes Windows not to want to boot up in the morning. It eventually boots up and loads fine after a few attempts. So instead of having to deal with the frustration of doing this every night, is it acceptable to leave it on for a few days at a time?

(And in regards to the problem my laptop is having, My CD-ROM is also broken..so at this time, I'm unable to use the Windows recovery disk :/)

A:Leaving Laptop on for a few days at a time.

It won't hurt it as long as it has enough ventilation. Don't stuff it into a corner or anything. You could also set it to hibernate, which basically turns it off without shutting down Windows. Of you could just put it in standby, which uses more power but basically does the same thing.

For my new digital audioplayer XDuoo X3 I bought a Sandisk Ultra 128GB micro-SD card.
But it seems unusable when trying to copy files to it.
Strangely enough the same problem occurred with the card of another (unknown) brand EVO. Thinking that it was a bad product I could give it back under warranty and replace it with the (much more expensive) Sandisk one.

The problem with both cards is that when files are being copied to it, it is only successful for the first 5-10 files. After that 'the target cannot be found' anymore, so copying stops.
At that moment a sound alert warns that the volume has been disconnected - its logo disappears from the 'computer volume overview page'. USB-unplugging the volume and reconnecting it brings the volume back in vision (with the usual sound alert). But after this a copy restart has the same results as before.

These problems always happen:
1. While syncing directly between my pc and the XDuoo with the SD card inside
2. While copying directly between my pc and TWO different card readers with the SD card inside

My conclusion is that neither the XDuoo nor the two card readers are the problem.
But if the SD-card itself causes the trouble, then this is strange:
1. If I attempt to use it directly from my music library MusicBee, that program reports that it cannot create new folders, because 'the volume is dirty' - whatever this may mean.
2. So every time I completely scan and fix the card, but never any problems are found: ready to use, says Win... Read more

I just watched a YouTube video of a Win7 Image Restoration.
The author indicated he had trouble restoring a System Image that was over 30 days old, due to the fact that the 30 day activation period for Win7 had expired from the time the System Image was made. It returned an error message for an Image that was over 30 days old, whereas an Image that was restored within 30 days of making it did not. Can anyone definitively shed some light on this? Do I have to create a new System Image each 30 days to remain protected due to Microsoft activation requirements?

Hi everyone.

I recently bought a custom-made computer from a well established business in the UK.

The computer arrived and as I was installing everything onto it, the internet dropped out a few times. I thought nothing of it and continued. After a day or two, the dropping out happened more and more until after about 4-6 days, it become unusable.

I contacted the business, and they sent out a new network card. Whilst I was waiting for this to arrive, I tried using a USB adaptor instead of the installed card. This worked fine, until again, after 2 days or so, it started having the same issues and then stopped working completely after a similar amount of time.

The new network card has now arrived and after 2 days, the errors seem to start to be happening again. It has dropped out 3 times now and looks as though to be getting more frequent like before.

I have tried numerous attempts to fix the errors - resetting the adaptor, reinstalling the adaptor, pausing anti-virus, and all the other methods I could find online - but none have made any difference. Using the troubleshooter works okay for the first few times, but as the issue gets worse, it becomes less and less effective. The errors it reports change but most often it is related to a gateway not being available, or there being some form of IP issue.

Perhaps worth noting is that I use my phone as a hotspot as the internet signal is terrible where I have the computer. However, I've tested it, and it works absolutely fi... Read more

I have an HP Pavilion 6545C and the power supply just died. If I order the part from HP's web site it's $65. Can I replace it with any micro ATX power supply (provided it's at least as many watts as the old one)? They are much cheaper elsewhere.
Thanks.

A:Are all Micro ATX power supplies the same?

For the most part, I would say yes to your question, but some companies do use proprietary components to force clients to keep coming back to them. The best thing I would suggest is to take a good look at your power supply, especially where the mounting screws would go in, as well as where it would be mounted in the case. Make sure they are in the same location on the new Power Supply. Take the old Power Supply along when you go shopping for a new one, to make a comparison.

Best bit of advice I could give is to make sure whoever you buy it from has a return policy in case it doesn't fit.

I have a cabin that runs off a 3000w generator and 1500w inverter system. New microwave keeps blowing the generator breaker... the mirco wave can be set for reduced power 1 to 10 but have to be down each time. I am looking for a way to reduce the power to the micro wave to prevent popping the breaker....ie a reostate idea...

A:Power to a Micro Wave

Probably not the forum you want to ask that question on. This is a computer forum. But in any case:

I'd buy a uninterruptable power supply that can help prevent spikes and undervoltage, then run the microwave off of that. I don't think lowering the microwave's power from 1-10 does anything for what you want. All that does on every microwave I've ever used is runs at 100% power for a few seconds then runs at 0% power for a while. The amount of time spent at 100 or 0 depends on what level you set.

Hi,
in this video Laura E. Hunter from Microsoft describes behavior analytics: https://youtu.be/hNZdboDvnuU?t=1251
She says that ATA will analyze the behavior in a domain for 21 days and declare this as normal behavior. After the 21 days ATA will report unusual user behavior based on the 21 days analysis.
I have two questions about this:
1. Can we see the progress of the analysis somewhere? I searched through the ATA-center but there is nothing. Is it possible to see it in some kind of logfile or the Mongo-DB?
2. We have started ATA with one DC. What happens if we add our other DCs later? Will the analysis recognize behavior from those, also when the 21 days are already over?
I did not find anything about this 21 days analys period in the documentation. I'm more than happy with a hint if I have overseen something there.
Thanks in advance

I thought I would have up to next July to decide when to get Win 10 going after the update procedure but it only gives 2 days  - how can I postpone it for much longer?

A:Win 10 ready updated but how to increase 2 days of postponement time?

You can postpone it indefinitely I think by just ignoring the message and closing the window. If you want, you can uninstall the KB3035583 and simply upgrade via the Media Creation Tool whenever you are ready.

Thank you all for your time, I got bsod every time I tried to install a new AV and do a prescan. After a while I searched and many places in the net told that the Gygabite App Center sometimes create this, so I uninstalled it, andthe BSOD stopped when using AV, but my pc got very slow. I atm followed a thead here for malware removal, and detected 3 instances of Win32/Bundled.Toolbar.Google.D with Eset Scan online, I am waiting for an answer for eliminating them in the other thread, but want to check if the hardware have something to do with the bsod. So any help there? Thanks for your help, this site is REALLY a godsend for me

If you can, post any minidumps created by the BSOD's by going to C:\windows\minidump and select all the .dmp files. Right-click sending all the files to a compressed(zipped)folder. Upload this folder as a file here.

I built myself a little computer reusing some of my LGA-775 stuff but I am having problems getting it to power on. I bought a 600w power supply (specs are below) which should be adequate for this setup, and it has run before, but now I can't get the computer to turn on. When I push the power button, the system powers up for a split second and then dies. If I push the button again... nothing. I can turn the switch on and off in the back all I get is that brief on state. The board has power indicated by a green LED, and the very first time i tried it the system ran fully powered.

A:Micro ATX system doesn't power up

Have you tried grounding it, sometimes computer can short out when powering due to the motherboard touching the case, e.g. one of the screws are loose and move. You seem exsperienced so i would advice taking it out and plugging it back in on cardboard which will stop any power shorting out.

From Google, the sound distortion appears to be worldwide and has been around for a long time - but Dell tech support appears they know nothing about it. I'm using Windows 7 SP-1. The distortion will stop if I reboot. Without rebooting, the distortion returns anywhere within a few hours to a few days and, as time goes on, the distortion gets much worse. If you have any ideas on how to fix this issue, I will provide as many other particulars about my computer and software as you need. If there is no known solution, I believe a class action suit may be warranted. Thank you in advance.

HELP! (I'm having to type this on my 300MHz notebook).

Yesterday, my second power supply in 12 months bit the dust. I spent all afternoon today cleaning any dust out of my PC (it wasn't too terrible, but I thought that might be the cause) and replacing the PSU. The computer fired up, but I immediately started smelling that same odd (like burning plastic) smell. Less than a minute later, the psu died... litterally in a puff of smoke. It was also very hot to the touch immedately after.

Now the technical details:

A year ago, my 400watt psu blew. Suspecting I was putting too much of a drain on it (Athlon XP 3200+ cpu, 4 IDE devices, but no lights or fancy stuff), I replaced it with a new 550watt psu.

Flash forward 54 weeks later to yesterday, I suddenly smelled that burning smell, followed soon after by the PC's power failure.

Today I found a replacement 550watt psu... used but in great condition. As noted above, it ran for about one minute before dying in a puff of gray smoke.

I have no clue what is going on here. Anyone? HELP!

A:Two power supplies in two days! (3rd in a year). HELP!!!!

There are two things I can think of right off the bat.

1. faulty house wiring where you are pluging the PSU in at. (unlikely but possible)

2. when your PSU went up in smoke the other day it took the mobo with it. and since the mobo has been damaged it is going to toast any PSU you hook up to it.

Hi

I have been reading online trying to find a fix but the general remedies dosen't seem to work. For the past 5 days, my pc has crashed once per day. I have noticed that at least for yesterday and today, that it crashed while i was browsing on amazon via chrome browser. Today, it crashed a few minutes after a cold boot while on chrome. Other times it was either while surfing the web or playing a game.

[Dump file attached below]
When it crashes, the error message is "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (NNSHttp.sys)
In the event viewer, it gives a critical error:
Source: Kernel-Power
Event ID: 41 Task Category: (63)
BugCheckCode: 80 PowerButtonTimeStamp: 0

All the drivers that I know of are updated and im sure its not a power fluctuation from my wall outlet (tried multiple outlets and surge protectors). Im not sure if its either the audio drivers, psu, usb wireless adapter, or something else that is consistently crashing my rig.

Its a newly built rig (win 8.1 pro) specs: amd fx6300, evga nvidia gtx 750ti, 1tb wd hdd, 8gb gskill 1600mhz ram, corsair cs550m psu.
It was fine for the first few weeks and ran without any problems till the past 5 days.

Any help is much appreciated
Thanks!

Hello all: I used the search but didn't find a direct answer to my consern. I am finally going to upgrade mother boards. The old Mobo was called "baby" ATX when I got it about 4 years ago. The newer Mobo I am looking at are called "micro" ATX. Is there a differance in power supply plugs between "baby" and "micro"?? I really want to keep the current power supplies since they are only about 3 years old and are good quality Antec 400watts. (and very Quiet)

The only thing I read was comments about 20 pin vs 24 pin. This would be online orders so getting answers about the Mobo is not always easy? Take a chance? Are there cables to fix the possible mis-match? Thanks for any info... agpilot

The Optiplex 5050-micro, monitor, plus some desktop accessories and peripherals are all powered from a power strip with on/off switch, which I turn OFF whenever I leave a house for some time, or for the night, etc. (certainly, before doing that, I shut down the computer properly.)
Now the problem: when I turn power strip switch ON (so the power to Optiplex's PSU is restored), the computer turns itself on for about three seconds, during which:

power LED starts orange for 1/2 sec;
it then turns normal white for the next 2-3 sec;
computer turns itself OFF, and LED goes OFF;
at that time there is rather distinct single clicking sound.

This annoying click is from HDD, it's not there when I remove HDD.
After described sequence, there are no clicks during any other activities: when I turn computer ON with power button, when I shut it down, etc. This click is only audible when power to PSU is restored and computer goes through this "on then auto off" procedure. I suspect, the HDD may not be properly shut down by whatever BIOS process that turns computer ON for 3 seconds when AC power is restored.
Partial solution was to set BIOS AC Recovery option to "Power ON". Then computer starts normally without any clicking sounds, when power strip switch is turned ON. I don't like this solution, because I may e.g. want to turn desktop lamp on without powering the computer. Plus, strangely, with this option, sometimes Windows 10 reports it was not shut down corr... Hi v170626,Thanks for posting. What you are describing is a normal function of Optiplex computers.  All the ones I've ever owned or used, do the same thing.  The "clink" sound you hear is the HDD heads parking themselves and does not damage the platter. You could resolve the issue by using the method you described in your post and try moving the desk lamp to another circuit so that you don't have to turn on the power strip.

My computer has been crashing to BSOD repeatedly over the last three days. We had a power outage on Sunday while I was out. Could that have set it off? I must not have had the Dump files settings right because they were not being created until today after I checked the setting again.

Hello mjaymay.

Apparently the latest crash dump is not saying about the reason of the BSOD precisely. So checked your earlier BSOD (two months earlier) which was caused by the network driver. Then matched the drivers date in the latest crash dump, got the result that your network driver is extremely old.
