Integrating multiple laptops

Q: Integrating multiple laptops

I have a dell Inspiron laptop and a Dell latitude 6420

The older dell latitude has more features that the Inspiron. Such as fingerprint scanner, Pointing stick and so on.

Is it possible to intergrate the two ,even if only one computer survives in the end to become better than before,at least to my preference?

I have some experience in adding hardware to desktops such as ports and sdram, etc . How advance is the above task if recommended at all?

Preferred Solution: Integrating multiple laptops

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I have purchased a lot of identically equipped laptops of the same brand which I plan on rebuilding. They each have legitimate COA's attached. I am using the manufacturer OEM XP Sp3 disk to do the installs. My question is this. Is there any way I can install XP, all the drivers, and all Windows updates on one of them, then clone the installation to be able to speed up install on all the others. On the 5 I have done so far the installs automatically activate with Microsoft. I don't mind the installs so much. It's the time it takes to download all those updates that slows me down. I guess what I am asking is if there is any way to remove the windows activation on my cloned copy and then be able to easily activate XP on each laptop using its own COA.
Another question regarding Windows updates - If I go to the Microsoft update library and manually download every update, is it possible to make an iso of all those updates that I can use on every XP installation in the future (one that I can use on various brands of laptops.) I've spent a lot of time reading about slipstreaming but if I undersstand that right that is if I want to slipstream SP3 into an earlier release of XP. I don't need to do that as I already have the SP3 install disk. I'm just trying to streamline my installation process so that so much of my time is not spent waiting on all those darned updates. Any advice is much appreciated.

A:XP activation-multiple laptops

Read the Windows XP EULA attachment below PDF.

You can save it for your records if you wish.

This will answer your questions.

I believe though you can only have 1 installation of XP on only one machine using only 1 Product key.

Hi, all.

So, i happen to have two laptops in my posession, #1, an old, slow computer with no screen (or anything else above the hinge), and #2, a laptop that i got from a surplus sale. #1 one is missing a few nonvital components, like a soundboard and such, although it still works if i hook it up to an external monitor (thats how i'm writing this in the first place). #2 has no operating system, because the store wiped it. I want to be able to hook #2 up to #1, so that #1 runs faster, and can utilize #2's soundcard. I dont want to open the laptops up and move the components themselves, because thats why #1 is missing those nonvitals in the first place. Any ideas?

Thanks.

If they're both the same brand and you know #2 is faster what would it hurt to swap harddrives?

I have gone through multiple troubleshooting steps, updating/rolling back drives, undating/resetting BIOS, swapping hard drives with identical machines... I'm just trying to see if someone can help me find a solution so that I don't have to reimage the machines and set all the users apps back up, that is a last resort. I have a Dell Vostro A860 laptop (1.5 years old) Vista O/S. Two days ago when attempting to boot it up it showed a black screen and it read "Critical low battery, Hit F-1 to continue". Whe I did, it shut down. Upon hitting the pwr button again, nothing would happen. Removing the battery and re-installing then hitting pwr button allows the start up, however 4 seconds into it, it just shuts down. I have tried with the power cord plugged in, unpluged. Will not boot either way.

Here is a strange thing. I bought 2 of these Dells for family gifts at Christmas 2008. Yesturday the other A860 did the same thing. What are the odds of that? The other one I unplugged the power cord to try on the other to ensure it was not a bad charger cord, and if that was the problem. When I pluged back in the battery icon just kept discharging and then shut off. I rebboted and all came back up for a bit then shut down. It now does the 4 second atempt and then shuts down dead.

Further strange, my next door neighbor called and said that they were having a problem with thei laptop, it was, yes you guessed it, showing Critical low battery, Hit F-1 to continue. Could this be a virus? I know we and neighbor a month ago had that AV Security virus, but we both removed using malware removal tools, and the systems have been running fine. Any direction would be appreceated. Local shop said to get new batteries. I hate to spend 80.00 on a bettery to find out it is something else. Plus why would it not... Read more

Hello All, and thankyou in advance for looking at this.
I have multiple laptops that are blue screening, mostly at startup when users try opening any program. They are running XP sp2. I have been looking for the cause for quite some time. This occurs accross the board. We have Dell D600's, D610's, D620's, IBM T40's, T43's, T60's. It seems to be more frequent on systems with only 512 mb of ram, but happens on ones with a 1 gig as well. I feel that the increase in memory is just masking the problem, so I don't want to just upgrade memory for all them. I have dump files from Dr. Watson for most of these laptops. Could someone take a look at this and see what you find. I have included two Dr. Watson dump files zipped. Thank you very much. Any help/info is greatly appreciated.

OK, i got a good question. I have two Seagate Passport External Harddrives. I am trying to link both of them to my laptop. Now, i have a weird issue. When both are linked, in Device Manager it shows both as active, and functioning properly, but only one will show up. When i look at status, one will show as "online", the other will show up as "offline". The sizes on the drives are 320, and 500 gb respectivly. Both show up with the same name in device manager. I was wondering if anybody has any ideas on this issue. I am a little confused. Is it compat issues, not enough power, or is it because both have the same name? Can anyone shed some light on this?

A:Multiple External Hard Drives on Laptops

I assume you're referring to Western Digital Passport drives. Passport drives are smaller and don't have their own power supplies. Due to this, they require up to two usb ports in order to be functional.

In order to connect one of these usb powered drives to a laptop you'll either need a high powered usb port, or two usb ports. A normal external hard drive requires a usb port for data and an ac adapter for power.

In other words, you either need four usb ports, or enough power for the hard drives. You are lacking one or the other.

The best way to connect multiple usb powered drives at the same time is to purchase a powered usb hub. A powered USB hub will power the drives and allow them to connect to your pc. This Sabrent 7-PORT USB Hub w/ AC Adapter is what I use and it works perfectly.

Hello, I buy and resale laptops, and recently I've been running into this issue much more often. When I'm installing windows 7, the laptop will request a driver for the hard-drive.
What's frustrating is I'm sitting on 5 laptops right now that are all saying the same thing. I can take these hd's out, slap them into another laptop and install windows 7 to them, and put them back into the first computer I needed them in... But I don't like doing that because of all the compatibility issues I have to go through when/If the machine will boot.

For example, I just securely erased all the previous owners data on a Fujitsu A series: AH530 laptop, I did it because I noticed the user had left stored passwords from their facebook to their bank account, and I figured it was best to make sure no one was able to recover the data. -- Anyway, securely erased all the data, wiped the free space afterwards, reformated, made an partition, and made it active, made sure that the disk would read in disk manager via my desktop (I have a port on my case to connect 2.5 inch laptop drives to LOVE IT.)

When I get the install loaded up on the laptop, and it gets to the screen where you select where you want the install to be put, it requests for the driver. NOW when I click browse, my HD actually shows up for me to browse for drivers.. It shows up as my C: drive, which completely baffles me.. (haven't seen it do this to any of the other laptops I have this issue with) But, it will not give me t... Read more

- Come to find out, my USB drive installation of Windows 7 was corrupt - but this fix still worked for 4 different laptops giving me the "A Cd/DVD device drive could not be found" And giving you an option to browse the removable media for the driver...

I'm sure it's been posted but here it is again, I can't remember the exact link for the fix/walkthrough I found; sorry for no sources.

Start your installation normally with your USB drive
Continue as you normally would, until you hit the error "A required CD/DVD device driver is missing."
Leave this error screen up SIMPLY Remove your USB drive, and plug it into a _DIFFERENT_ usb port.
Click the CANCEL button on the error message.
Then click the X at the top right of the installation
Doing so correctly should lead you back to the initial screen of the Windows 7 Installation without a reboot.
Begin going through the steps to install windows,
instead of giving you the error, the install should then proceed as normal.

A:Multiple Laptops connecting to a wireless router

I'll offer two guesses--you have the modem connected to a LAN port instead of the WAN or else have a static IP assigned to at least one of the PCs.

Assuming neither of those guesses are correct, please show the following for PC1 with a good connection, PC2 after it tries to connect, and PC1 after it gets knocked off.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Hi,
I'm having an intermittent problem with my wireless network. (I'm posting because I haven't seen many cases of 'limited to no connectivity' with multiple computers).
Both my roommate and I are having 'limited to no connectivity' intermittently. Both computers can be connected through the LAN (and comcast said that there was nothing wrong with the modem - for all the help that gives). I had set up the wireless from my computer and had recently upgraded to Windows 7 (maybe 2 weeks ago) and the other computer is still on xp. I tried to reconfigure the wireless through my computer and then through hers, with the same results.
When I tried to do the auto windows troubleshooting it said that the problem it found was an invalid IP address. When my roommate tried to repair (and reconfigure the IP address) separately, she was unable to do so.
I guess my inane question of the day is where is the IP address renewed initially? (the computer, the modem?...)

And now for information that i've seen people ask for:

can you post back a screen image of xirrus - see below - lets see what the wireless landscape looks like
------------------------------------------------------------------------
{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Direct link to the program is here http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifi_download_redirect.php
Then run and install the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.

We've got 1 desktop and 4 laptops in the house. We have cable internet and a wireless router that all the computers connect to. Lately there have been some issues where when one laptop is connected to the Internet, another one won't connect, and vice versa. Today, the desktop and 2 of the laptops were connected, but when we tried to connect 2 of the other ones, it connected to the router but both got messages that the Internet has limited or no connection.

Is it possible that there is some sort of conflict between the computers? Or perhaps a setting in the router that needs to be changed? We're using a Linksys router with WEP enabled.

Appreciate any comments, as I can't seem to find the solution. Thanks!

Hello,

Currently at work. we use norton ghost 8 to image multiple notebooks and prepare them for shipment. (for use by our sales force).

We just pull the cdrw out of one of the notebook bays and put the ghost drive in and then image the local drive on the dell notebook that way.

Im looking to improve the process to save time.

After we image the drive and boot up the pc, we update the computer description field, the computer name, and join the pc to a domain (xx.xx), use a special gif screen saver (found on drive c), create local admin rights for the user (in groups), and quite a few other settings in outlook with is installed from the image.

Do you know of any software solutions or batch processes that could help automate this process after we image the drive? It takes approx 30 minutes per computer (to configure for new user).. Id like to make it possible to complete this task in 15 minutes, instead of having to update all the settings manually in xp pro.

thanks for any info.

Once you're actually into the desktop it freezes and will not move what so ever.  So we have no idea how to fix this. 2 days ago. Son 2's laptop did exactly the same thing. This is now 2 of 3 laptops that are not working.  - These laptops have antivirus, we monitor their usage so there's nothing untoward with the actual laptops. 2 weeks after receiving these laptops in 2015, the wireless adapter disappeared completely in the third laptop so clearly this is a Stream laptop issue????  Is there any way to fix or resolve the mouse issue for the other 2 laptops?

I work in a corporate IT environment and have recently noticed alot of our 64 bit laptops are blue screening due to iaStor.sys (Intel Rapid storage technology driver - x64)

I have been able to do the basic analyzing but It would be a great help if anyone could follow this up and let me know if there is anything else causing this as I have removed the driver and installed a new one but it still appears to be blue screening

Both machines are virtually identical in the problem. They Related to dne2000.sys Network Enhancer from Deterministic Networks.. It is over 3 years old and cant possibly work in win 7. I would update to a win 7 compliant version or remove it completely.

A few days ago the three windows running laptops in my apt randomly lost internet connection. The network would display as full strength connection but no pages would load in IE or FF. However, the one macbook was still working (although sluggish) After trying to futz with the IP settings on each of the laptops, I gave up and reset the router hoping everything would go back to normal.

Well, now nothing works. All four machines still show full strength connection but nothing will load and no IM clients will connect. So, I tried to hardwire the connection to one of the computers straight from the modem and again, same issue. It shows a full connection, packets being sent and received, but no actually connection whatsoever.

Of course my ISP sees the modem connected and claims it can't be their problem so I'm left to fix this on my own.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm at my wit's end on this one.

Everything went OK, I successfully integrated Sp2 with original CD contents. Problemis now how to make bootable CD. I found information on this page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894950/

My question is what to do next?
I've end up with integrated Xp and Sp2 on my hard drive and .bin file (image) on my desktop.
Now, what should I do to combine these two into bootable cd?
I've heard about nlite but since I started this waz, I'd like to go to the end.
Informations were easy to follow unitl last step.

Do you have any advice?

Thank you

Anyone have any success integrating any kind of PC/MacMini/Laptop to their car? I wanted to install an mp3 player, dvd player, navi system...but I was thinking...why not just use my laptop for all the above?
I did some searching on the net and couldnt find much about integrating a laptop with a car, but did find some stuff about ipods and mac mini customizations.
I was kind of intrigued by this and was wondering if anyone has any success stories, websites or if anyone else found this interesting.

A:Integrating your car with your PC/Laptop?

Not a good idea unless you want to be involved in a car accident. A laptop in a car is far too distracting, especially at night with the bright screen. Believe me, I thought the same as you, until I tried it. I tore it out as fast as I put it in.

Now if you had some sort of system where you replaced the car radio with a touch screen LCD panel of the same size, and threw the PC in the truck, then that might work. I know of a few butchered attempts at it, but nothing even close to something that is commercially viable.

Dear Friends,
I have been searching all over the internet for the solution but couldn't find any. I have 2 phone lines - first one is Ooma which i got for around 220$ but its free for as long as the company doesn't file bankruptcy. I have local phone no. on Ooma so that i can call home from my work place.
Second phone line is Vonage and i have World Calling Plan starting from today and i can call Europe including other countries for free.
Just want to figure out if there is any device that i can use to call my Ooma phone line from my work place and somehow i get the Vonage dial tone so that i can dial UK phone nos. So in other words i will be able to call UK phone nos. from my work place.
Any advice appreciated.

Hello,
I am trying to update my Windows 7 Deployment image with update KB3177467. Once I use DISM to add this update to my Windows 7 WIM, no further updates can be applied to the WIM. The error I see on the Command Prompt is:
An error occurred applying the Unattend.xml file from the .msu package.
For more information, review the log file. Error: 0x800f082f
The error in dism.log is:
Exec: Cannot finalize session because an exclusive session is pending. [HRESULT = 0x800f082f - CBS_E_EXCLUSIVE_WOULD_MERGE]
I tried this out with a fresh copy of the install.wim off of a MSDN ISO, integrating KB3177467, and then trying to integrate any other Windows Update. The same errors happen.
Does anybody know what could be causing these errors? Thank you.

Hoping someone knew how to do that !

Hey,

My workplace consists of a bunch of PC's used in the main business of Traffic Engineering, and then a few other PC's setup as a small internet CAFE (sort of a hobby of my boss). We recently did some renovating so the CAFE has been out of action, and before we open the doors again we would like to resolve some security issues regarding network access.

I guess I should start with a rundown of our current network setup:
-------------------------------
Windows 2000 server

Proxy Server for internet connection. IIRC the proxy server is its own workgroup (or is that domain?)

Engineering PC's belong to own domain

CAFE PC's were previously in engineering domain (using a restricted access account). However, recently the setup has been changed such that the CAFE machine now all belong to the same workgroup. I think the idea was to have CAFE users only log onto the machines locally as an extra security measure to protect our server.
-------------------------------
The problem is that, changes to the network setup have been put in place while we were under going renovations. As such, the CAFE machines were not operating, and only one machine has been configured by the (external) techy.

My boss has now asked that I setup the remaing machines, but I am having real problems arriving at the desired results.

Ideally, I would like the CAFE machine to be be able to logon to the domain as required (they are periodicall required by the Engineering section), and to a... Read more

A:Integrating Domain and Workgroup

Are all of these PC's on the same LAN or are these seperate lans?

If they are the same lan then this -

Ideally, I would like the CAFE machine to be be able to logon to the domain as required (they are periodicall required by the Engineering section), and to also have a local logon that still enables file sharing between the other CAFE machines (but no domain access).

I get partial results, but nothing completly perfect. Here is a description of what I tried:
-------------------------------
I joined a workgroup on the CAFE machine, but I did get any logon options at startup (to log either locally or to the domain), just username and password.Click to expand...

Would not matter much at the last part - not getting a domain prompt matters not one bit. You log on as a local user and then if you want to connect to anything on the domain like a shar just go to run and type in \\IP\Share and you get the prompt for a username and password

So next, I added a Network ID, and joined the domain. This gave me the desired logon options (ie local or domain), but I seemed to be able to access some shared domain folders when I log on locally, which I don't want local accounts to do.Click to expand...

This part means you need to address domain security by checking the user groups the new user belongs to or tightening down the shares you don't want this new user to get to....

I would not give the casual user a domain login thats almost asking for trouble.

Ideally, I ... Read more

I'm trying to share the C drive of my new Vista (Home Premium) laptop on my home LAN which has several PC's with XP Home & Pro. I don't want to share users-the new laptop is my wife's so the sharing is primarily so I can copy files she needs to her C drive. She has her username, established only on her PC's & I have mine established only on mine.

I know this works because I had it working on an earlier Vista laptop we returned because the video card/driver wasn't fully compatible with some of the games she plays. (Wouldn't run in true full screen. It'd run in 'full screen mode' but wouldn't fill the screen. And it wasn't entirely a 'letterbox' issue as some didn't fill the screen in any dimension-but others, that had a wide-screen option, worked OK with that turned on. Never could figure it out so we returned it & got a different one, HP/Compaq instead of Toshiba.)

The Vista laptop can see & browse the XP machines, but the XP machines can only see the Vista laptop-any attempt to browse the shared drive gives an Access Denied message. I can browse the Public folder, but not the rest of the drive. I suppose I could move everything into the Public folder, but I'd really rather not do that. This is also our 'travel' laptop (and yes, I turn sharing off when we travel with it).

Network is private, Discovery is on, File sharing is on, Password protected sharing is off, C prop... Read more

Hey guys!

I recently seen the thread under "How to Clean Reinstall a Factory OEM Windows 7" and I actually tried the Slipstream. Okay, now, after successfully creating a slipstream, I noticed that when booting into the operating system, IE was hijacked (I forget the name of the website). I am thinking that the highjack was installed by either Windows Update Installer or the program used to actually slipstream the updates. I performed the steps using the following link:

TEST -Update 7 installation media

Then, on the same thread, some person recommended portable update, which I attempted on a previous install of windows, and it actually highjacked my browser to report to some lady patriots website. (It wouldn't even go away after doing a factory reset on Firefox).

My question is, are these things really safe to do? Or, are these companies just sneaking annoying ads to make money?

It has got me so flustered that I just used heidoc and downloaded the updates the old school way, through windows update. I mean, after seeing those two highjacks, who knows what else will show up down the road.

Greetings!

I've recently done a full revamp of my System including a new Motherboard that comes with an Intel? I218V Gigabit LAN Controller ( see Motherboard Specifications ) that won't work off the beat with the Windows 8.1 supplied Drivers which basically means that during the Windows 8 Personalization Procedure I'm not able to access my Microsoft Account and have it load a Backup to automatically install apps and preferences - Connecting to the Account afterwards won't produce the same results which is rather disappointing.

So I was wondering if it's possible to make a new Windows 8.1 Installation that comes with the necessary Network Driver?
Preferably with a Tutorial ;)

Or is there maybe a method that would allow the installation of the Network Driver before creating a Local Account in order to access the Restore Backup Function supplied during the Personalization Procedure?

Thanks in Advance!
Durahl =)

A:Integrating Drivers into Windows 8.1 Installation CD

Hi

Yes, it is possible. You can integrate LAN driver to the Windows install image by using the command line tool DISM. If you never used it before, i would recommend reading the official documentation https://technet.microsoft.com/en-in/.../hh825099.aspx

Here is how you you should add drivers to the install image : https://technet.microsoft.com/en-in/.../hh824971.aspx
Please note that DISM can only service Windows install images which are in WIM format. Retail install discs usually came with WIM images. However digital downloads may be in ESD format which can't be serviced by DISM currently ( only Apply operation is supported ).

If you think it's a little difficult to handle the command line, there is also a GUI front end available which is written in DotNet : DISM GUI 4.0 Utility - Free tool to manage WIM images - ESX Virtualization

I hope someone can help. I attempted to integrate Accounting 2008 with my Business Contact Manager but when I run the wizard, there is no database found. MS tells me that I cannot run the wizard because:
1. The two programs are not on the same SQL
2. I am not the Administrator for the programs
Neither of these reasons could be correct as I am a home based business with no network and the only administrator on this computer. I had an issue this morning with BCM and had to restore from my back up. Don't know if that matters or not...Does any of this make sense? I really don't want to have to manually enter all of my BCM info into accounting if I don't have to...Very frustrating and any info would be much appreciated

After 3 days of unsupportive email and chat support, 2 web devs that have flaked on appointments, and lots of wine, I'm here with my first post to this forum...

My website is https://mobsjobs.com/. The homepage currently uses widget from HR software called Workable. I want to try BreezyHR software, but it has to be able to integrate into my careers site with some approximation of my branding. I've set up a Breezy test page here and inserted both widgets: https://parker-bell-rem8.squarespace.com/test. Both links kick me to the Breezy jobs page instead of remaining on my site.

Breezy says integration is easy, but here we are. They give me this:
View attachment 259607
Inline widget
Code:
<div id='BrzyHr_app'></div><script src='https://mob-society.breezy.hr/embed/js?inline=true?></script>
2. Iframe widget

Code:
<div id='BrzyHr_app'></div><script src='https://mob-society.breezy.hr/embed/js??></script>
I called SS and asked for the CSS to put in bottom box. They said they can?t help and "don?t recommend doing that" (pours another glass of wine). I use the Heights template.

All Breezy can say is, "It works! And here is an example of a current site correctly using an branded iframe successfully is https://pikselgroup.com/careers/ . "

But it doesn't seem to work. Why can't I stay on my site? Can you help, oh kind people of the web?
