Flash Disk Won't Work (Pen Drive)

Q: Flash Disk Won't Work (Pen Drive)

hi,

After formatting the flash disk it stopped working. When I connect it to my computer it is visible in My Computer with its volume name and drive letter, but I try to open it, it says that I need to format it. I try to then format it but it then says "Windows was unable to complete the format". In the format menu, capacity is listed as unknown capacity. I tried to create a new volume in disk management, that didn't work either. In disk management, it says Online and Unallocated. It worked perfectly fine before, I had just formatted it with file allocation 1024kb and then, for some reason it stopped working. How can I fix it?

thanks,

Mike

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently purchased a 32 GB San Disk Flash Drive. The security files pre-installed on the drive were junk, and I could not delete them so I formatted the drive to remove them. This cleaned the disk, and it holds data, but I'm not sure if this is part of my problem. I am trying to load my copy of windows 7 onto this disk, and using the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool, I can select my ISO file, but when I go to select my USB drive, my computer does not recognize the flash drive as a flash drive. Is there a way to change the Flash Drive so Windows will recognize my Flash Drive as removable media? Smaller USB drives still work on my computer, so its not the computer. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hello masonta. Welcome to the forum.

Let's start with this: can you post a screenshot of your Disk Management window, expanded so we can read everything, with the USB stick installed?

You also might check in Device Manager to see if the stick shows up as a USB device, or a hard disk.

Well I have reinstalled vista once and on the first time I installed vista I couldn't get flash to work at all and was clueless and posted a thread on here stating my issue and the moderator who responded was unable to help me. Well I decided to reinstall vista and my flash player has been working all alone until I ran disk cleanup and now it will not work and I can view the "Install Complete" on the adobe site and install flash player manually yet that does no use. I also remember running diskcleanup as soon as I installed vista the first time. I think this may be a bug but how do I get flash player working again?

hi. i forgot my "working" flash disk connected in the usb port when i logged off. when, i logged back in, the flash disk does'nt work anymore! i got 1x popped up message "usb not recognized" when i logged in before it disappeared from screen. i know that the flash disk is the problem as it does'nt work on any computer anymore (tried it to about five already!). it usually lights up when i put it in but now when i plugged it in, nothing happens! no lights, no errors, no msgs. Tried looking 4 it in the device mgr, it's not seen as well. my work colleague says that this also happened to him twice already when his flash disk was almost full. mine is almost full as well when it happened. don't know if the myth is true.

Hi,

First of all:
I have done a Windows 7 repair install which has solved some problems with my windows, however, the repair install didn't slove these problems(Autoplay for USB Flash Drives) and listing one USB Flash Drive as a HDD.

But, USB Flash Drive is still identified as a Hard Disk Drive, although it is a USB Flash Drive.

I have three USB 2 Flash Drives with the same brand 'SanDisk'. Two of which are 7GB. One of which is 2GB.

However, one of them is dealt/identified as a HDD, however, the other two are dealt as a Removable Storage. (USB Drive).

Once one of them dealt as a HDD is plugged to the PC, then it is listed under the Hard Disk Drives on my computer(Screen shot below). The Flash Drive whose assigned letter is 'I' is dealt as a HDD and even its icon in the disk management is similar to a HDD. However, the assigned letter 'L' is for a USB HDD.

Also, when opening the disk management, and clicking 'right click' on it, then I see the all the options(such as 'delete option', and 'mark partition as active' ) specific for a hard disk partition are active(not grayed out).(screen shot below).

Also, via disk management, I could 'delete' a USB Flash Drive and recreated it as the way of dealing with Hard disk partition(Screen shots below).

Besides, When clicking 'right click' on the USB Flash Drive listed under Hard disk drivers, I don't see an 'eject option' as what happens for any Hard disk partition.

A:USB Flash Drive is identified as a Hard Disk Drive

Transfer your data to your computer.
Open command prompt with administrator privileges by going to Start,All Programs,Accessories,Command Prompt.Right click it and select "Run as administrator".
Type diskpart. Then type list disk.Find your USB drives and type select disk 3 if it is one of them. You can know by their size.DON'T select disk 0.It's your Windows drive. Then type clean.

Don't type it if you don't have backed up your files on the drive. This will delete the drive.
Then do the same for your other drive. If it is disk 4,type select disk 4 and then clean.

If I helped you,say it.

A:Flash drive asking to insert disk into drive E

First verify you are not starting the computer with the flash drive inserted. PC may be trying to boot from disk depending on BIOS settings.

Depending on your OS (not mentioned in your post) with flash drive inserted.
Click Start -> My computer -> Computer management -> disk management. Right Click on removable drive partition and change the drive letter to something else ( Not X).

Unfortunately Its most likely your flash drive has failed. They do that.

I'm sure you guys deal with this sort of thing day in and day out, but my flash drive won't work. It's not being recognized in any way other than my computer makes three consecutive beeping sounds when I plug it in and one when I remove it. It doesn't light up. I've tried the Computer Management thing and it won't show up there either. It's a Sandisk Cruzer 8GB and I'm trying to run it on Windows XP. It works on my bedroom computer, our laptop, and the computers at school. Someone please give me a hand? I would be truly greatful.

A:My flash drive won't work...

With the drive plugged in, go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager do you see any devices with a yellow mark or under Universal Serial Bus Controllers do you see an Unknown Device? If so, right click it and Uninstall it. Now pull the flash drive out and restart the computer. When the computer comes back up, plug the Flash drive into the Back USB port of the computer not the front or in a hub as these are low powered ports. You should get a new hardware wizard and it should install. If not, if you have a name brand computer (Dell, HP) go to the manufacturers Support/Download Drivers site and type in your Service Tag # or your make and model # and download the Chipset Driver for your computer model.

I have a Lexar JumpDrive that is not recognized when inserted into the USB port. Nothing happens in windows XP. I tried on 2 machines 1 with SP1 and 1 with SP2. I tried other devices and they all work on the machines. The one I have has a light on the drive to signify that it is working. They LED light on the drive does not turn on. I am thinking the thing is done. So my question is....

1. Is there a way to get to the information on it?
2. Is there a more scientific way to figure out if the drive is really broken and can not be accessed?

Thanks...

Could someone please help me fix the problem??? Is it a trojan virus? coz i cant even format it in XP or MAC. and when delete data from it using Linux, the data appears again when i use the flash disk in windows.

I would appreciate any Help on this....

my usb is apparently disk write protected. there is no physical switch on the usb. i can't understand it as it was working perfectly one day & the next it was write protected, it maybe to do with the fact that i formatted with 'wii backup manager' allowing me to put downloaded wii games onto the usb & play it on the wii, but i can't remember if i done this or not.
i googled the question and someone said to run cmd, diskpart, list disk, select disk X, attribute disk clear readonly, clean. it goes on for a few more steps but at this point i get the error message "DiskPart has encountered an error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O Device error.
See the system event log for more information"

what can i do. the usb is only around a year old so shouldnt be damaged already

I had that happen to me once with a portable HDD after I tried using it with an Xbox 360. Got that same error. Only thing I can figure is something happened and it messed up the controller on the drive itself somehow.

I have a 4 gig Usb flash drive. It is a no name brand I got on ebay (for 86 bucks too!) It works fine at home (WinXP SP1) but at work it shows up in the tray as a new USB storage device but when I go to My Computer it does not appear anywhere. The work Computer is running WinXP SP2(I think but not positive on SP2?) and my other old 64 meg USB Flash drive worked fine at work on the same PC/OS.

Any ideas?

P.S. anyone know a good free prog to find the device info/manufacurer?

A:USB Flash Drive not recognized at work

Try this on the work computer, reboot and see if it then recognizes the USB drive.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- cut here --------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"
-------------------------- cut here --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

I use a flash drive to transfer files from my laptop to my desktop PC. I copy and transfer many kinds of files including Word docs, jpegs, excel spreadsheets, pdf's, etc.

I can copy mp3's onto the flash drive with no problem. After I plug the flash drive into my desktop PC, the mp3's appear to transfer to the desktop routinely. But the mp3 files will not open after I drag the mp3 file from the drive window into my itunes folder. itunes actually opens after I do this, but the name of the file never shows up and doesn't play.

I've checked the properties of the transferred mp3 file and it looks fine. Then, I can email to myself, the same file from my laptop. I open the email on my PC and have no problem playing the same mp3 that I've attached.

Do you have any idea why I can use my flash drive to transfer all my files except mp3's?

ahh!!! USB flash drives are supposed to be easy! Plug and play! Never had a problem before.. I got this PNY 4gb optima USB flash drive for sale for $20. I works on my desktop without a problem! On my labtop I can't get it to work.. On Properities it shows it's full but its not and the USB drive is empty when I click on it?. Plug it back in my Desktop and it works?

I notice for the location: My desktop says: location: system Fat 32 or something like that.. on my labtop.. sometimes it says "Raw" for location but mostly it's says None for location? Yes I even remove the driver and plug it back in so it can start brand new..
Both laptop and desktop is running windows XP service pack 2. the only diff is that my laptop is never connected online so it never got any windows update.. but that shouldn't make a difference for plug and play usbs? How do I change the location on my laptop or what should i do? thanks!

simple but have you restarted the laptop? sounds crazy but I had a usb zip drive do something similar. I filled up one disk, put in the second brand new disk and it told me it was full when I new it wasn't. Restarted and it worked fine. Also, make sure you don't have a mapped drive as the next alphabetical letter after your cdroms. for instance, say you have a: floppy c: hdd d: cdrom e: cdrom f: mapped drive to server, then try to plug in a usb thumb drive, it won't work until you change it's drive letter in disk managment.

Hello,

You failed to mention what OS the older machine has. Since you mentioned it runs on new pcs without a problem, I suspect you are trying it on an older os. Xp and above have drivers and recognize this, but if the OS is older you will need to install drivers for this usb device. I suggest you find out the make and download drivers for win9x or whatever it may have. Also, if not older os, have you tried to run it under a different windows profile ?

Hi. My friend recently gave her thumb drive to me, and asked me to try and figure out how to fix it.

It's a 2gb thumb drive (1.97gb, it reality), and it worked fine. However, a few days ago, most of it's files disappeared, with only about four remaining... the funny thing was, according to cmd, explorer, and even foldersizes (that's a program from keymetric), the drive has 700 Mb worth of used space, even if the four remaining files were only about 500 Kb each (*.mht files).

Now, at first, the simplest solution was that the original files that 'disappeared' were simply hidden. this was not the case. The files simply aren't there, or are hidden by some arcane way that I can't fathom (for example, that old win98 trick of renaming, via .bat file, your folders with ASCII characters that make Windows unable to access them).

We are not discounting the fact that it was a virus that caused all this grief (in fact, i'm pretty sure some form of malware caused it... there was one that was detected by my Kaspersky 2009 the instant I plugged in the thumbdrive). However, we were hoping to avoid a REFORMAT, since we were hoping to salvage those missing files... they were pretty important. We keep hoping that the missing 700 MB are actually the missing files (though my friend can't give me a definite answer as to whether the actually files that disappeared were 700 MB in size).

Any helpful comments? Thanks.

A:Lost space on USB 2.0 Flash Disk Drive

700 MB of its capacity is propbaly gone bad by some means. There are quite a lot of programs for file recovery out there. Hope it isn't totally unaccessible.

i have a dell desktop running XP and whenever i use any flashdrive on this computer (front or back USB ports) it only gets recognized about 1/3 of the time. the other 2/3's of the time, i get a message saying that the "USB device is not recognized...it has malfunctioned and windows does not recognized it". ill go a day where no flash drive will work anywhere, then suddenly it will be accepted and work fine. these same drives work fine on any other computer all the time.
is there anything i have to update or do to make this desktop recognize a flash drive without errors and problems?
thank you

A:Flash drive doesnt work every time

start run type services.msc scroll to windows image acqisition change to auto,go to universal plug and play change to auto , shell hardware detection change to auto

try http://support.microsoft.com/gp/hardware_device_problems

Hi, i have some problems with my 8gb flash drive.
i get a few error when i try to fix it the way i can only think off, maybe someone else knows how i can fix it.

firstly: When i plug it in i get this error:

I click format as i think it will fix it and i get this:
As you can see it says "unknown capacity" and i dont know why or how to fix it.

i then click format and i get this error:
i then click close on the format window as i dont know what else to do and i get this error:

I have it plugged in correctly as its only 1 and a half inches long and it plugs smoothly into my usb port. The only thing i can think of that has made it crash like this is that the school computers have the "safely remove hardware" feature removed so i have to just remove it. Nothing has been done to this to damage the actuall hardware physically.

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this i would appreciate it, if you could point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

A:Solved: Sandisk usb flash drive wont work

Try formatting it FAT32, instead of FAT. If that doesn't work try using this utility: http://download.chip.eu/en/USB-Disk-Storage-Format-Tool_176935.html

my system have a problem when i copy data from pc to flash drive cannot work. display msg you'll need to provide administrator permission to copy this folder.

A:doesn't work copy and paste from pc to flash drive

Hi @HP193, Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums. I have looked into your issue about your HP Notebook and not able to copy due to admin permissions. It is also possible to modify permissions. Try to enable the Administrator Account on Windows. I found this example it is a third party site and not affiliated with HP.  Please get back to me. To show that you like, or are thankful of my post, kindly click the Thumbs up below.  Thanks.

I'm Stumped.
I plugged the flash drive into the old machine, and popped up with the normal "install new hardware" crap. IT said no drivers available, and wouldnt work at all.

Would there be any loopholes around this? Do I need a certain program? or do I need an outdated Flash Drive??

HELPP!

I have a Dell Studio 1555 Bios A13

I have three flash drives, one a 1gb HP flash drive, one a 2gb Sandisk Cruzer, and one a 16gb Patriot XT

When the HP 1gb drive and Sandisk 2gb are plugged in during boot, nothing happens. It POSTs fine and starts windows.

When the Patriot drive is plugged in during boot, the BIOS hangs 2/3rds of the way through POST.

I have tried multiple formatting schemes. Also note that there is absolutely nothing on any of these drives, they are empty and freshly formatted.

1gb formatted to FAT works, FAT32 works, exFAT works, all regardless of allocation size.

2gb formatted to FAT works, FAT32 works, exFAT works, all regardless of allocation size.

16gb formatted to FAT32 fails, exFAT fails, regardless of allocation size. I have tried a full (non-quick) format to check for bad sectors, to no avail. I have tried HP format tool rather than windows format tool, to no avail.

So at this point I'm thinking it's the Dell BIOS at fault here, and I'm going to have to dualboot instead of making a multiboot drive. If anybody can help suggestions would be great.

A:USB flash drive preventing POST, others work fine

go into your bios and see if you have the option to boot from a flash drive, if you do disable it. then it should boot as normal, ignoring the flash drives until it reaches windows

Hi,

I am the happy owner of a Windows 7 computer, which functions as sort of a home entertainment and storage machine. Recently I started encrypting all of the data drives with BitLocker to prevent an eventual thief from gaining access to our personal files. As my motherboard doesn't have a TPM chip, I wanted to encrypt the system drive and start it up using a BitLocker key on a USB disk. Unfortunately, when I perform the BitLocker Encryption Check nothing happens (the computer does not detect the USB disk at boot, starts normally and does not begin encryption) or it halts with a blank screen, forcing me to shut it down physically, remove the USB disk and start it up again (at which point it boots normally).

The BIOS settings are the same in both scenarios aside from one thing. In the first scenario, the boot order is HDD, FLOPPY, CD-ROM and in the second scenario it is HDD, USB-FDD, CD-ROM. In the first scenario, it seems like the computer does not see the USB disk at boot and thus just skips the BitLocker check. In the second scenario, the USB disk is detected but causes the booting to halt.

USB Keyboard Support and USB Legacy Storage Detect (or whatever it is called) are both enabled in BIOS. The USB disk (a small 2 gb stick) is formatted in FAT.

I suppose, that if I can get Windows 7 to start while the USB disk is plugged in, I can get BitLocker to work. Any suggestions?

Sometime last month I started to upgrade to SP3 but the upgrade would not complete. I was pretty busy so I never looked into why the upgrade didn't finish. The next day I double clicked on my flash drive (K and it opened in Notepad. I right clicked to autoplay and it still opened with Notepad.

Now the only way I can access files on that disk is by searching the drive letter in My Computer or by right clicking then Open as Portable Device then double clicking the drive from in that window.

The problem is only on this computer. I can take the disk to any other computer and double click the drive and it open windows.exe as per usual.

I noticed that when SP3 was upgrading registry settings were being backed up. Once the install didn't complete I believe I saw a notice saying that some registry settings where not changed back and some applications may not work properly because of this.

Can anyone help me out?

Guys,

I have a Windows 10 desktop. (OEM Dell.) I also have a Patriot 30GB Flash drive with some MS Office Files, Photos, and Bookmarks on it. Just basic stuff.

If I use my Flash Drive to create a System Recovery Disk in Windows 10, will I lose all the other files on it no matter what? Meaning that I would either have to purchase a second Flash Drive or use a DVD/CD-R option instead?

Hi,

I have a couple of SanDisk 8GB Cruzer Micro USB Flash Drives that don't display consistently in Win 7 Disk Management. They are labeled SANDISK 1 and SANDISK 2. They appear properly as a drive icon with SANDISK 2 drive letter M or SANDISK 1 drive letter K in Win 7 Computer - Devices with Removable Storage, but intermittently appear properly in Win 7 Disk Management. For example, in the Volume list in the top window, I see only an disk icon under volume, nothing under File System, but Layout, Type, Status, Capacity, Free Space and the remainder of the columns appear normal.

Also, in the graphical display in the lower portion of the center section below the Volume list section, the left column appears normal, but the graphical portion to the right only displays 7.50GB, Healthy (Primary Partition), the label and drive letter are not displayed. Also, when I right click the displayed device in the left column, I get a pop-up entitled SanDisk Cruzer USB Device Properties, but when I click the Volumes Tab, I can't select the Volume and click Properties, because only a drive icon and capacity are displayed, the Propertied button is greyed out.

Interestingly, the above description is for when I have only one of the USB devices plugged into the system. When I plug the second USB device into the system, it displays properly without any issues. I don't think it's a device issue, because I can get either to display properly if it's the second USB device attached as indicated in ... Read more
