I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am running Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 on Windows 7.

When I open Excel my personal.xlsb opens fine and my macros are available and I can create new macros. No problems.

BUT when I open any existing Excel file the pesronal.xlsb is not opened and therefore no macros and I cannot create new macros as I get the error "Personal Macro Workbook in the startup folder must stay open for recording." I have been trying things all night with no luck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will list the things I have tried or checked with no success below:
In Options>Advanced Tab>General Section....the box for "Ignore other applications that use DDE" is NOT checked.
In Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Trusted Locations... I have C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART listed which is where my personal.xlsb is located
In Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Macro Settings ...Disable all macros with notification...selected and not selected neither way solves the issue.
In Options>Add-Ins>Manage: Disabled Items ...There are no disabled items.
I have deleted HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Excel in the registry editor
I have deleted C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART\PERSONAL.XLSB and then run excel to create a new personal file.
I have renamed C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART\PERSONAL.XLSB to PERSONAL.XLSA

Dear Forum Members,

I recently discovered a problem with my excel application. Whenever I am browsing the web with IE or Firefox I am unable to launch any of my excel spreadsheets (.xls/,csv files) by double clicking on them in my folders. There are NO crashes or error messages. The applications just waits until you close your web browser and immediately launches once closed. I did a couple of tests and found out that:

1. Excel can be manually opened if you clicked on it's main shortcut but NOT by double clicking on any of the spreadsheets.

2. Double clicking on the spreadsheet will only work if certain websites are opened. For instance, if I were to go to MSN.com and try to double click on my worksheet it does not launch. But if I were to a) close my browser showing MSN.com it will launch OR b) from MSN.com type in another URL such as Google.com the application will immediately launch. It seems that I cannot launch my spreadsheets ONLY if certain websites are opened. I find this rather odd.

I am currently using ms excel office 2003. Any advice, help or suggestion would be deeply appreciated. Thank you in advance.

However when the same is tried/accessed through a browser deployed on a dev machine, it works normally. Below is the version of the IE on the DEV server

What is causing this to happen?
Is there any tool to check the difference between the IE settings on my Desktop and the dev box.

So when i open any file like a PDF or something, it's automatically opened as an excel document when i want it to be word. I've already tried setting word as a default app but it still doesn't work.
Also, i tried going to the downloaded files and pressed 'open documents like this with word from now on' but afterwards when i open that same file it still opens in excel. Can someone please help me, i have to print stuff for school but I can't because of this.

A:All my files are opened as excel instead of word

Well you can Print in the interim. Instead of pushing a file to an application via its File Association, you can always open the Application and then open the document and print it.

So if you try to open a PDF, DOC, DOCx, and others they are all associated to MS Excel ?

Did you Right-Click on a PDF file and choose "Open With" ---> Choose Default Program
And set it back to Adobe Reader ( or whatever PDF viewer you use ) ?

likewise...

Did you Right-Click on a DOC and DOCx files and choose "Open With" ---> Choose Default Program
And set it back to Microsoft Word ?

Additionally...
Did you go to Control Panel and use the Default Programs applet and then choose "Set your Default Program" and then choose the Program like Adobe Reader, Microsoft Word and have it "Set this program as default" ?

I am a user of Microsoft Excel 2003 and Windows XP

I have two excel files linked together by formulas. One file contains all the data (14 mb), and the other all the charts (15.6 mb). I usually open the file with just the data first, then proceed to open the next one. In both files, I would enable macros and not update any links. Today, when I opened the charts file, this warning came up and excel crashes:

Hi folks,

I'm using MS Office 2007 with XP Pro. I noticed a while ago that when I opened an existing Excel spreadsheet, I only got a blank screen below the toolbars. I discovered by accident that I could get the sheet to display by pressing the minimize button and I've been using this as a workaround for a few weeks now.

However, I'd like to get back to the correct way of operating. Did I do something stupid or is this a known issue?

Best regards

I received an excel file as an attachment. I know I should have saved it, then opened my saved version before working on it - but had some sort of brain freeze and opened it from the email.

I worked on it, adding monthly figures, clicking save every time I completed a month.

Today, I can't find where it has been saved - the only place I can find it is still, attached to the original email.

Please can anyone help me - I don't want to have to do all my work again!
Thankyou

A:lost an excel file opened from IE

Depending on what e-mail software you are using, your e-mail program may have put the attachment in a temporary directory for it to be opened in Excel. Unless you did a "Save as" to a different location Excel would have done saves to that same temporary location. It sounds like your security settings may have been set to clear the temporary location when exiting Windows or the mail software. I am not familiar with the default mail program that come with Vista.

Ok, so we are having an issue with Excel 2003 at our work. One of our employees is having an issue where when she has a spreadsheet opened (doesn't matter which one) and she goes to open another one (again, doesn't matter which file), Excel closes with no errors. It just disppears.

I have scanned the computer with antiviruses and such and the only thing that has come back is some tracking cookies but that is about it.

The weird thing is, when I open Excel in safe mode it doesn't seem to happen.

What could be the issue here with Excel? And does anyone know a fix for this because this is really annoying.

Thank you!

I have arranged my file icons in "My Documents" folder in a particular way that is good for me. My arrangement has a different number of files on each row. When I open an Excel 2000 file by double clicking the icon, the icon moves to a different location in the folder. It seems to move to the next available space in the grid. When I close the file, the icon moves again, not back where it was, but to the highest available grid space. Opening a Word 2000 file seems to work OK. The icon doesn't move. I have tried this on XP machines with newer Excel and the icon doesn't move. Is this something unique to Windows 2000 or Excel 2000 or do I have some other problem?

I am using a Dell Dimension 4300 running XP home. Whenever I open my Firefox or IE browser, it bluescreens, with the error message "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL".

This problem first occurred over a year ago, but I did not explore it til now. I ran Spybot and Ad-aware on it, and it did not help.
I had not made any s/w or h/w changes on it before the problem. I was running Firefly and Beyond TV on it for a while without problem. Otherwise there was no other cards in the pc. I removed Beyond TV and Firefly to see if this would help, but it did not.

I would really like to avoid reloading windows.

A:Bluescreen when browser opened

Hello BrettC and welcome to bleeping computer

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is usually related to Video drivers not display property. Update your drivers usually solve this but however this program helps us determine what file is associated with this bluescreen.

Download BlueScreenView (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/bluescreenview.zip)
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Q: Has anyone seen this problem and is there a patch or setting for Word XP that fixes it?

We have a document created in Word 97 with an embedded Excel Spreadhseet object displaying a chart.

When we open the document in Word 97, everything is normal.

When we open the document in Word XP the chart is rotated 180 degrees around the vertical axis. The chart is right side up, but the left side of the chart is on the right and all the letters are reversed.

When I double-click the object to edit it the chart flips around to normal. When I exit edit mode (without making any changes) it flips back.

When we convert the Excel Worksheet object to an Excel Chart object in Word 97, save the file, and open in Word XP the chart displays normally.

The problem is that we have an automated PDF converter that uses Word XP, so when we create the PDF, it is created with the reversed chart. We are not staffed to open every Word 97 document and convert spreadsheets to charts. How can we fix this without installing Word 97 on the converter?

Hi guys, I just started my first job last week and my boss has a problem which noone in the office has been able to solve, if I can solve it, I would undoubtedly make a very good impression, no?

Now, he has w2k installed on his laptop (formatted NTFS), with a network share (also NTFS) on a 2000 or NT4 server - I'm not sure which. When he opens an Excel document that is saved on the share, Excel opens but the screen stays white and he has to end the process. When he opens the file again it works just fine and the document opens.

They first tried reinstalling Excel, then Office, and then they formatted the drive and reinstalled Windows, so it can't be the software or the OS on his machine.

If anyone has come across this or a similar problem, or has ANY ideas, please let me know, it would be so much fun if the new blonde girl can show 'em all

Hello there, Have tried to get an answer on this one from the Adobe Users Forum, but to no avail (no response).
My issue is this:
1. created a MS Word document with hyperlinks embedded in it (used relative links as the content was to be moved / copied to other locations) and then converted it to a PDF file. Links were to other files (MS Word docs and MS Excel spreadsheets for instance located on the same PC / drive / CD as the source PDF)
2. tested this PDF file with embedded links in an IE7 environment (XP and upwards) having first made sure that all the files were in the right spot - no troubles - all links work.
3. tested this PDF file with embedded links in an IE8 environment and it would not work. Keep getting 'invited' to allow the blocked content to be opened, which I do, but nothing happens.
4. So to try to sort out the issue, added the location as a trusted location within Adobe Reader (preferences, etc) - no change still not working in IE8.
5. Added the location as a trusted source in IE8 - no change still not working in IE8.
6. Changed the preferences in Adobe Reader to prevent the PDF opening in a browser - hooray! links work in both IE7 and IE8 - BUT WHY ???

I have built a large content management system that relies on these links within PDF documents working from within a browser environment (ease of navigation, etc).

So my question - is this an issue with the enhanced security feature of IE8, a separate issue to do with Adobe Rea... Read more

This issue just randomly started a few days ago, and I haven't found anyone on the internet that's having the same problem. Anytime I open a web browser and try to open a webpage, the page starts to load but then the entire computer immediately freezes. It's not the BSOD, it just freezes the screen and becomes completely unresponsive. I tried leaving it for a while but it just continues to be frozen.

The interesting thing about this problem is that it occurs the same way no matter which web browser I use. I've tried and the same thing happens with Firefox 3.5, IE8, and Chrome. However, Windows Update runs just fine and successfully downloads its updates. It also freezes if I try to access the iTunes store. The store behaves much like a browser (within iTunes) so this isn't really surprising. It probably uses the same process to connect to the internet as the other browsers. So the big question that will probably help me solve this issue more than anything: what do browsers/iTunes do when connecting the internet that Windows Update doesn't? It seems to be this process that is causing the system to hang.

If I don't open a browser, the computer is 100% functional in all other programs. I played Portal for about an hour with no instability or crashes. I originally thought this was a problem with the cheap USB network adapter I was using, but the issue still occurs when running on ethernet cable. This is a more complex issue and will probably require a deep understanding of windows. In the process of solving this I have ruled out browser type, program type (where the link is received in), and error with browser. The best assumption that I can make is that this is a system error. Something with the instillation of windows 7 itself. This problem however, which has been on my computer for quite some time now, was not always there. It developed about a year back and I have since been to busy to work on trying to fix it. Okay, now that the introduction is over, here is the problem.

It is simple and complex at the same time. To sum up the entire problem in simple terms, I can not open links sent via skype, attached to an image inside of a program, or in some cases inside of a windows explorer.exe file itself. I may be using this term incorrectly here but I will refer to them as 3rd Party Links.

Example of a link that I can't open
Now when I say I can not open links I do not mean I am unable to view the webpage. I am saying that I can not click a link to open it. I am forced to copy the link and paste it directly into my URL bar. This is a minor inconvenience but it gets more complex.

This here is why I need it fixed. Say I'm in an application, StarCraft II for example. Something very interesting will show up in the news section and it says click to open in browser.. well guess what, I can't open it in my browser because of the problem. It simply does no... Read more

A:Internet lags out when a browser is opened!? please help!

So I managed to solve this on my own (eventually)....
step 7 and 8 solved the issue for me
So, in case anyone else is having the same problem, here are the steps I took to solve the problem:
1) Restart the computer
2) Disable system restore, then restore computer back to last know working configuration. Restart the machine in safe mode, and run an antivirus scan/malware scan
3) try running programs like, rkill, glasswire, combofix, etc to try reset and flush typical stuff out
4) using the cmd prompt, run 'netstat -b', look for any abnormal PIDs, if you see any, use the 'msconfig' cmd, disable any processess/services. Then use regedit to manually remove the entries. Open the folder c:/computer/user/<user>/appdata/local/temp and delete all the contents. restart the machine
5) go to control panel, network and sharing centre: click on the wireless connection. when the prompt opens, click on 'properties', left click on IPv4 and click properties again, in the bottom section, input an open DNS address (you can find loads on google)
6) Hard reset your router (usually a pinhole button on the back of the router)
7) log into your router through the default gateway (ipconfig to get the ip, then stick that into your browser). Go to router settings and find your security settings. Change the wireless channel to the next one down (for me, I changed mine from 11 to 8), then, change the security encryption to 'WPA(only)'
I hope this helps

I noticed that when I open firefox the display is automaticly changed from "windows 7" to "windows 7 basic", when I close it the display changes back to windows 7 again.

Says "A running program isn't compatible with visual elements of windows"

Well I figured it was because I was running FF rather then IE8 so I tried IE8 only to find the same thing happens.

Does this happen to everyone at this point or is it just me?

I lose the fancy preview of the programs that are open when I mouse over their buttons on the taskbar, drops to a plain, simple black box with the program's name in white text in it.

When a browser is open it is the only time the issue occurs.

No big deal and I know its not "ready" yet, just wondered if everyone has a issue of a similar nature with it or not at this point.

Nope, don't have that problem on either of my Windows 7 systems. I have some visual issues on my laptop, but that's flickering rather than an aero type thing.

What version of the beta are you using?

I'd suspect that this was a video issue - either incompatible hardware or drivers. But that's just speculation at this point.
Also, please post the make and model of your system so that we can review the specs.

I switched from IE8 or whatever version it was to FF a few years ago.

At that time Firefox was very slow and I about gave up on it until they got it to an acceptable speed (still nowhere near as fast as IE). Now each update just adds boatloads of bugs and I need to find another browser.

The bugs that annoy me the most:
-More often than not when I maximize a Window I just get a white screen with nothing at all on it I must move the scroll wheel on my mouse or press "[down]" on my keyboard to get the Window contents to draw themselves on the white screen
-It crashes quite often, IE never crashed
-It does not hide the mouse pointer when typing, even though Windows is set to and every properly designed software respects my setting
-Very often the typing cursor dissapears causing you to "type blind"
-The dictionary is missing about half the words of the english language causing false red wavy lines on properly spelled words

I could go on but already that's enough to make me give it up.

Firstly, did IE ever add a feature so it remembers your opened windows (not just your open tabs as IE 8 or whatever it was did)? If so I'm going back to IE as that's all it was missing that I needed.

Otherwise which browser:
-Remembers your opened windows AND tabs
-Doesn't have all the bugs of FireFox?

Thanks

A:Reliable web browser that remembers opened windows?

I would personly either download IE9 or download firefox lastest version (6 beta) or try different version of firefox eg (firefox 3,4,5...)

internet explore 9 i find a lot faster than 8 with very little bug. I still use firefox as well but only when I have to.

there is also a new "firefox aurora" which i've never heared of that might be good (i'm going to try it out tonight)

Constant Upload/Download even without browser opened??

I have recently noticed my ACER8943-/Windows 7 - 64bit, laptop#1 is suddenly & 'constantly' uploading & downloading at the "same time" and at an incredible rate. (approx. 1MG every 10 minutes). I am with an IPS which has a capped 25G per month and they alerted me because I have always stayed within the range of 5 to 10 Gigs' max per month for years. I then opened my MS Resource Monitor and saw the constant flow of traffic - even when a browser isn't even open!!!! I'm so confused.

I checked for any p2p programs that may be running in the background and found only one. I uninstalled it from my programs and, this did not help in any way. I have also ran 2 or 3 anti-virus's, (nothing found), I even went to my firewall control and "stopped all incoming and outgoing traffic"- and it was still sending/receiving. I also visited the SHIELDS UP website - which verified I was running in STEALTH mode and nothing could penetrate any ports. What a crock! Hi all, I have 3 computers and they all seem to be having the same issue: When a search is done using Yahoo or google or MSN, and the results page is loaded, if you try to click on the links to follow the search, the browser is redirected. I noticed for a few seconds, "inethunt", and "insidelinks" flashed in the status bar at the bottom. Then the broswer is redirected to "adalien", "Juggle.com", "manufacturers directory" etc. and other random web sites. These seem to be benign sites, but the original desired web address cannot be reached through the search page links. However, when the location is typed into the browser manually, the web site usually can be reached. Occasionally, there will also be an additional browser opened as the links are being followed. Most times, this location is "Google", but others have come up. Hi all,

Windows Server 2003 SP2 - is sharing a folder, and the client PC's that are opening files on LAN.

There are 5 PC's 3 with Windows XP, one uses Windows 7 and another one Windows Vista, the problem is detected only on the XP machines. When users try to open a Word or Excel file it hangs, other files are opened instantly (*.pdf, *.exe...). They use Microsoft Office 2007.

What could be the problem ? Why Office files are freezing when being opened from a shared map ?

Please help me solve this issue, thank you in advance.

P.S.: I removed the "Microsoft Office File Validation Add-in" still the issue persists.

Seems like in Windows Seven there's no way to add a command line switch when setting up default programs?

What I'm trying to do is ensure that Chromium is always opened with this command line switch: -allow-outdated-plugins

I have it in the shortcut pinned to taskbar. All is fine until I open a page via association when the browser isn't open. Chromium has Flash built in. I have it disabled. So without the switch I'm going to keep seeing "your plugin is outdated" blah blah.

I don't understand why command line params when setting up file types has been removed.

A:use command line switch when browser opened via association?

hmmmmm, this seems to be working. I went to HKCR key for .html and got the value. Searched on that to get the command string. It was
"c:\path\Chromium\chrome.exe" -- "%1"

I changed it to
"c:\path\Chromium\chrome.exe" " --allow-outdated-plugins " "%1"

Note the empty space at the start and end of the allow param.
If you just stick the allow part after a space after the exe it won't work. It needs these 3 quoted groupings. At least by trial and error it works for me.

(Use ERUNT or restore point to back up registry before these edits in case browsing gets broken from messing with it.)

Hello,

I've been using this site in the past while looking for fixes to various problems, recently registered and tried to help a little in my free time but now I am facing rather a big problem with which I am not sure what to do.

Firstly,
Please excuse me if you will deem it as a waste of time as I found few general ideas on how to go about fixing it:

I am posting as I'm not sure that those fixes will work and I have 4 users from Finance Departament at a finance year end who desperately need to fix the problem.
What happens is, they have have a spreadsheet (.xls) on a shared network drive which is crashing upon opening if sharing is turned on. If sharing is disabled one person can work on a document.
2 users have Office 2007, other 2 use Office 2003. 3 of them are facing this problem, one with 2007 and two with 2003.

I am really clueless and would appreciate any troubleshooting ideas and/or potential fixes.
For the time being I'm off to remove KB2502786 and kb2541025 updates from user's machines (I they are on) and will post results. Hopefully I will get some replies in the meantime

Thanks for all the help in advance

This morning I turned the computer on and it took a while to boot up. Yesterday I ran Windows Defender and Malwarebytes due to slow start up and cursor circling indicating a program was running in the background. Windows Defender found some suspicious items, I chose the option to send to Microsoft.

When I opened Firefox this morning, it should have been our email homepage (web based) but instead it opened to a random site asking for login and password. The web address did not contain any correct information. I attempted to go to the email provider website and was redirected to another site. Eventually I was able to use the history to access email, having issues with not being able to send email, opening new tabs for other searches results in very slow search.  Every now and then the screen and items open in the tray will flash to white and then reappear (almost in a wave pattern).

Sorry, software newbie here

I've been getting this message for heaps of things recently:

First noticed it trying to use Trillian's profile editor, now noticed it applies to anything that connects the Internet to one of my programs... but I can still play games and chat... If that makes any sense. For example, Bad company 2 can be played online, but the updater causes this problem. I also get it trying to run programs rather than save them when I download, and uploading anything anywhere just comes up with errors.

I couldn't update Spybot or Malewarebytes but I re-downloaded the latest versions of both and scanned to no avail, a few pieces of minor tracking cookies and the like, which I deleted before restarting, to find the same problem. Registry checkers all say that everything's fine, and messing with security settings in ways suggested in a few places on this forum didn't help. so... plz help, I feel like I've tried everything.

Have you tried booting into safe mode? Usually you can do this by pressing F8 during boot up and a black and white menu will appear, you can now choose SAFE MODE. Once you get to your desktop try uninstall the software as usual. Then reboot.
