I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just thought of this. You might use this tutorial to see if it is a TCP/IP Auto Tuning issue.

This is me first post to the forum so hello. I am in a simular position as Yadda insomuch as that I also am experiencing the same issues with my ZYXEL p-660-ELNK modem provided to me by EARTHLINK. This is how I was able to resolve that issue, as well as create another....

First, the modem is also a router (as someone previously stated) so the first thing you will need ot do is to switch it to bridge mode. This will get rid of MOST of the routing features... Next, click on advanced settings in the brower, choose LAN and make sure that DHCP is disabled. Mine wasnt' even after switching to Bridge. Lastly, click on SECURITY. I'm not sure why, but the modem ships default to block ALL WEB TRAFFIC!!!??? Disabble this by unchecking all the boxes in the security fields. You'll want to make sure you have a firewall installed on your machine or your switch/router may have one built in.

That got me online. My problem is that now, my "blazing" speed DSL is running at about 100/60 as opposed to 6000/600 which it was testing at when directly linked to the computer. Earthlink says it's the router, Netgear says it the Modem. I'm at a loss to be honest. Any ideas?

When you have a new issue, please start a new thread. We deal with issues in separate threads, makes it much easier to keep things straight.

First think I'd try for the slow router speed is to change the MTU in the WAN configuration section of the router to 1492, see if that helps the issue.

recently my old router died, so I bought the new one. I connected it to my PC, entered my ISP information. It's working, but kinda slowly. My ISP speed used to be 10MB/s, but now I'm downloading torrents only with 1MB/s. Task manager shows that network is used by 10% since I have my adapers speed and duplex set to auto negotation. Do you have any ideas how to fix this?
EDIT: I use cable connection.

I would first uninstall or delete existing install. Reboot, and reinstall. Is it slow in both regular connect and Wireless? Or is only your wireless connect slow?
How do you determine it is slow? What are you using to test the connection speed?

Hello all,

I have a really strange problem which has kept me scratching my head for quite a time. I've recently bought a 3G, 32MBit/sec (DC-HSPA+) connection with a ZTE MF680 Modem and a Dovado 3GN router. When I connect the modem directly to the computer I get around 20-25MBit/s which is great and acceptable. Problem is when I connect through the router I get max 3Mbit/sec.

Connected via ethernet cable or Wireless (n/b+g+n) gives the same low speed results
I have used the same APN (bredband.tre.se) in my router as is on the modem
I have upgraded to the latest firmwares on the Router (latest firmware 5.0.5-3)
I have swaped my modem to another one, to the Huawei E372 (latest firmware
I have swaped my Router to another Dovado 3GN and updated to the latest firmware
The modem is placed 2meters away from the router to reduce interference
I have removed all my anti-virus and firewalls and I believe the router has no firewall and prior to that did a virus check, also with spyware doctor
I changed the SIM card, and got another from the ISP, no help
The router's support says they recieve full speed (like 20Mbit) with the same hardware and firmware combination
The 3G modem is exactly in the same place where I do the speed tests
Speedtests done with speedtest.net and bredbandskollen.se
Pings are quite high in both cases when doing tracerts but while doing the speedtests they are between 45ms and 75ms (quite OK for me)
I have moved the config to another room... Read more

I have a question about my router, it's a Linksys 1900AC. It broadcasts 2.4 and 5. My laptop does not have a receiver to pick up the 5. My average download speed connected to 2.4 is around 10Mbp/s. I'm paying for 150Mbp/s.

If I connect my wife's laptop to 5, she gets a download speed of 122Mbp/s. My daughter's MacBook gets 138Mbp/s. If I connect theirs to 2.4, they get an average of 10Mbp/s. Do you think there is something wrong with the router and the 2.4 network? The download speed seems awfully slow to me.

I have tried changing channels 1,6,and 11
There is also a setting to pick
B only
G only
N only

If I set it to N, my laptop will increase the download speed to about 30Mbp/s but I have older devices in the house so I keep it set to Mixed.

All the laptops were tested at a distance of about 35 ft.

Hi. I am using the Linksys EtherFast Wireless Access Point + Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch Model BEFW11S4 V.2.

I noticed my internet connection was awfully slow as it is supposed to be up to 15Mbps. I was getting half that at 7Mbps.

So, through process of elimination I determined it was the router (I disconnected the router, plugged directly into modem, and got 14.4Mbps!).

First thing I did was switch out the cable to see if that had any effect. It did not.

So, here I am - that's all I know how to do. Is there ANYTHING at all, some setting or something I need to do in order to obtain the highest possible internet speed I am paying for? Please help!

Thanks in advance.

Ps. By the way, I already shut down all unnecessary programs to see if that had any affect and it did not! Also, shut off Windows Firewall - no effect.

I am using Windows XP MCE SP3, 2Gb RAM, 564GB Hard Drive(s), Pentium 4 Processor at 3.00GHz

NO viruses, malware, spyware or any unnecessary applications are running. ALL cache(s), temps are clear. Modem working great, as you might have acertained due to the 14.4 speed it is arriving at without the Linksys Router hooked up.

Today i bought a router, i plugged it in and set everything up as according to the instructions i put my pc on etc and started browsing the internet. When i connected a second pc to the router both pcs internet began to run dreadfully slowly like so slow that it couldn't open webpages.

Now when i turned off the second PC and disconnected it from the internet totally the internet was still running slow on the original PC when it was working fine before. I then tried rebooting everything and starting again but the slow internet speed remains. While writing this message iam using a direct internet connection from the modem to the PC btw

I made sure on both PCs all programs were closed except internet explorer and explorer.exe aswell but this made no difference.

I'am using a 2.2Mb ADSL connection and iam assured by my ISP that 2.2Mb is more than enough for two pcs to use between them.

Can anyone with experience of this problem help me out i don't really know what is going on here.

Thanks in advance

A:Dreadfully Slow Internet Speed When Using Router

You might want to try a few ping tests:

1. Try and ping your router (note the speed in ms, should be 1)
2. Try and png your 2nd PC (should also be quite quick)
3. Try and ping a public ip address in your country (or a website, should be under 100)
4. Try and ping www.ireland.com

If you receive timeout errors or extremely high times (1000+ ms) then something is taking up your bandwidth perhaps. Let me know how u go & if need be i'll guide u further :grinthumb

Hi, I have the sierra aircard 875u, ATT 3g, Ijust bought the MBR 1000 router to network. THe speed on the host is actually faster than using the att communication manager. However, on the other computer itis really slow. Previously I had a linksys N router and managed to get internet sharing up and there was no speed issue. THe speed noted on the client is 54mbs, signal strength "very good" However this is extremely slow, slower than a dial up connection.
Is this typical, is there a way to speed it up? Could the problem be a slow network card?

Hi all.
Not sure what is up here but we are having considerable problems with the internet.
Sometimes it will be fine although only getting a download speed of 3mbps and upload speed of 0.8mbps.
Other times it will take an age to open a google page and then just stop working altogether.
Sometimes turning off the router and waiting a minute or so will get us back to 3mbps but it doesn't always last. Everytime we turn laptop on we have to reset the router again.  It as though there is too much going through it and it jamming up all the time. Is this possible or am I infected with something?
Operating system is      Windows 7.

Now since then i've had very bad transfers on some occassions you get the message saying "experiencing a slow connection click here to fine out why."

Usually inicates your behind a firewall.

I Don't have the firewall enabled on My wireless router, i use only Windows XP SP2 built in Firewall.

Does anyone no of a way i can fix MSN/WLM transfers?

A:Slow MSN/WLM transfer Speed since wireless router installed.

You don't have to enable the firewall functionality in the router - it is inherent. You have to forward certain ports to your computer or enable UPnP to allow MSN active file transfers.

I have a Belkin wireless router (F5D7230-4), a Buffalo Linkstation 250, and a new Dell Dimension 9100 with XP-home and plenty o' RAM. Everything mentioned is directly cabled together, with only 1 laptop sharing the wireless access.

EVERYTHING is fast--internet, processing, whatever--except transferring files to the Linkstation, which takes forever. 400 megs took 18 hours the other day (!). Furthermore, if I start to transfer a bunch of MP3s, the first 5 or 6 will FLY, but then it just grinds to a crawl. If I'm just browsing the contents of the Linkstation, the speed is fine; playing an MP3 directly from the drive works fine as well. And if I hook the Linkstation directly into my network card, it runs like greased lightning, so I assume it's a router issue.

All firmware is updated. No firewalls on. Protected mode is off. Frame bursting is on. NAT on. UPNP on.

Does anyone have ANY suggestions for me? I couldn't find any other posts that seemed to address my specific issue, and it's driving me nuts...! Thanks in advance!

Hi all,

My Belkin N300 wireless router is now experiencing intermittent slow Internet speed. The router is 2 years old and has worked perfectly until last week.

Here are the troubleshooting steps I completed.

Internet speed test when directly plugged into the wireless router and cable modem: 30mbps
Internet speed using laptop wifi: 2 mbps then sometimes works at normal speed
Called ISP and they verified there was a connectivity to cable modem issue. Did a power cycle for modem and router. Then got full 30mbps from cable modem to ISP using direct connect to laptop.
tested other devices such as laptops and tablets, all experiencing intermittent slow speed
when experiencing slow wifi, switched to direct connect ethernet cable to router and got immediate full 30mpbs

So far all my testing is pointing to the Belkin router's wifi connectivity. I will check on the router's firmware since it has never been updated.
I also found a thread online suggesting disabling QOS on the router. But this should not be needed as it was working fine for two years since its purchase.

Any suggestions to what else I can do to resolve this issue?

I just bought a new modem to replace the one I am renting from Comcast (Motorola SB6120: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825122009). I have been using an Encore (EHH-WI-G) 802.11g 54Mbps router.

I got everything hooked up last night and I noticed that when I was hooked up directly to the modem (ethernet), my internet was super fast. When I hooked up the wireless router and accessed the internet through it, my speed was noticeably slower. I used speedtest.net to see what my speeds were like:

Wired to modem: download 50+ Mbps (I don't know how in the world it read this high...I'm not even paying for these speeds from Comcast)

Wireless through router: download only around 5 Mbps

Can someone explain this to me? Is there a setting on my router that is restricting the speed in some way?

A:Internet speed - via wireless router (slow) vs. via modem (fast)

Have you tried downloading files in both wireless & wired what speed did u get in both modes.

Technically speaking, yes. You've added another "hop" for the packets to have to travel to and from.

But it's not to any degree that you will notice.

Hi Everyone,
I have a 2GB ram Acer Aspire One AO722 computer that has been slowing down substantially. I have a huge amount of hard drive space but it seems if I store more on it it gets slower. My question to you is what is the best software out there to speed up a computer?

The Software I Currently Have (To Not Mention):
Tweaking.com Tweaker
ATF Cleaner

A:Best way to speed up a slow computer

Start by checking this out:

Optimize Windows 7
How many processes are running at any given time? Use the link above in addition to deciding how many processes you need running as too many will slow your rig down. I have an old laptop with only 1 GB RAM, Intel Duo Core and 55GB HDD. I usually only have 48 processes running at rest, and when I'm online, with multiple programs opened, I only use about 5% of my CPU

Tweaking things is a tricky route to take. Some can help, but many can harm. Windows 7 is pretty well tweaked out of the box so I wouldn't do to many. Try scanning for malware with; Malwarebytes or Superantispyware to see what may be holding your system up.

That's a good place to start, the members here can help further, but until you do a few of these common steps there's no need to get too in depth, as you'd be surprised how much these things can help.

A:Computer Speed Slow

Open Task Manager and check the cpu usage. If it's high, check to see which process is using the cpu. You may also want to check Event Viewer and see if Windows is reporting any hardware issues. If all of that looks normal, then we will need to know exactly what is "slow".

Hello 7forums,
I recently purchased a new computer, and everything is running perfect except the download speed is very slow.
My old computer would average 1Mb d/l speed where as my new one hovers around 50-90kb. My brother is using my old computer on the same network and i got him to d/l the latest wow patch (so we were downloading from the same source) and it still averaged at 1Mb.
However when playing WoW i average anywhere between 30-60ms and my browing speed is perfect.
So to summarize:
My old computer's d/l speed is 1Mb, where as my new on is around 90kb,
After downloading from the same source the result was still the same,
Browsing speed and in-game pings are fine.

I've tested it on my mom's computer and her download speed is fine. My ping is fine, such as when I play online video games and such I have no lag or problems. And I can upload things at my normal rate as well. But my download speed just won't keep up. things that use to take seconds now take several minutes or even hours.

I don't know what the problem is and I've tried a few different solutions that I've found, some even on this site, but none have worked. So please if anyone can help I would gladly appreciate it, and I will give more information that is needed.

I bought a new computer last week, and i am connecting wirelessly to my router for internet, just like my other 3 roommates. My download speeds are in the 11-20 KB/S range while theres are in the 400-500 range! even my old low RAM computer is getting dl speeds in that range. I don't know why it is doing this, one of my roommates said he still downloads stuff on his win XP computer bc his new Win 7 comp is just as slow as mine!
Now, a series of stupid questions:
Is this a common problem with new computers in general?
Is there an easy way to fix it, such as utilizing more priority to download speeds?

I am pretty new to computers in general, so any dumbed-down info would be much appreciated.

Last night we bought a brand new HP Pavillion a6838f with vista and began downloading different programs. Well we began to notice that although the internet works at a perfectly fine speed downloads go excessivly slow. I have read that Nortan antivirus is a potential cause but I was just wondering if there are any other possibilities that could be causing the problem. We recieve internet via cable. Also, plugging our previous computer in right next to us and trying to download the same program, the speed is considerably faster, noting that the second computer is using windows XP.

What speeds are you getting with it? Visit http://www.speakeasy.net and run their speed test. What should you be getting?

Are you using a router? Try it with the router and with your computer connected directly to your modem.

Could be the related drivers for your system. Visit the HP site and install all driver updates related to your specific model.

Hi guys,

I'm not as tech savvy as I could be, and I've been all over the internet looking for answers. Here's the situation-- I'm paying for 250 MB/s internet speeds. My phone gets these speeds, my laptop gets these speeds, everything gets 250 except for my desktop computer which is annoying. My desktop is consistently around 10 MB/s. I'm running the most recent drivers, etc... I'm wondering if I need to replace a specific part of my computer but I don't know what that would be. Anything helps! Thanks!

Hello, I think I may have a couple of problems going on.

A) I have noticed that my computer has been running slower than usual. It seems that something is running on hard drive. I don't think it my virus update because it is set to run only when I prompt it to.

B) My e-mail account is a concern. I occasionally get junk mail, like stock info or men's medications. I usually add them to my block senders list. I have noticed that some of the e-mail addresses that I block come from ligitimate sites, i.e. design/build firms or realtor firms. Can e-mail addresses be hi-jacked? The reason I ask is because this morn. I went to block one and my own e-mail address came up.

Would it be okay if I sent you a hi-jack this report for you to take a look at?

Thanks so much!

Okay, I'm baffled. Usually I can trouble shoot problems, but not this time.

I have 8 computers on my network. My main computer (this one) has a very slow upload speed.

Comcast - 20mb down, 5mb up

This computer - 25mb down, .17mbps up

All of the rest will hit 5mbps up consistently.

Everything I've done here has not worked ...

I've plugged the computer straight into the modem
Updated built in network adaptor drivers
Flushed the DNS: ipconfig /flushdns
Put on a new network cable
Tried a network cable from a computer that does work fine
I spent 45 min's on phone with Comcast support.

I run XP Pro
All upgrades are current
i7 4gig ram
Dual 512k video cards

Computer worked fine few weeks ago. But now it's not.

I do not have an additional slot to install a new NIC card.

What do I try next?
What else do you need to know to help me trouble shoot this?

Thanks alot for your help.

Hey people! My main computer's internet has been very slow. I'm getting only 30 mbps when I should be getting 150 mbps. All of my other devices get 150 mbps speeds. I get full speeds when connected with an ethernet cable. I have a qualcomm atheros ar9287 network adapter installed. The router I'm using is a Cisco DPC3848V. Any help is appreciated!

How are you connected, 802.11 "b" max is ~5.5Mbps, "a" and "g" max out at ~20 Mbps, etc. WiFi operates at the highest possible speed that both endpoints can support. For example, an 802.11g laptop connected to an 802.11n router will only work at the lower speed of "g". In other words, both devices need to support the same standard in order to operate at those speeds.

Also, are there any physical obstructions in the line of sight between devices? What's the distance between the devices? Is there any radio interference in the area?

Wikipedia: WiFi > Interference

For more details on this topic, see Electromagnetic interference at 2.4 GHz.

Wi-Fi connections can be disrupted or the internet speed lowered by having other devices in the same area. Many 2.4 GHz 802.11b and 802.11g access-points default to the same channel on initial startup, contributing to congestion on certain channels. Wi-Fi pollution, or an excessive number of access points in the area, especially on the neighboring channel, can prevent access and interfere with other devices' use of other access points, caused by overlapping channels in the 802.11g/b spectrum, as well as with decreased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) between access points. This can become a problem in high-density areas, such as large apartment complexes or office buildings with many Wi-Fi access points.

Additionally, other devices use the 2.4 GHz band: microwave ovens, ISM ban... Read more

On my new computer the download speed (broadband) is the crawl of 0.81Mb/sec.using speedtest.net. At the time of test the computer was doing no 'work'. I noticed this slowness when downloading a driver update which was at .89Mb/sec.
Another time when downloading a program it was at .196Mb/sec. Now it is a consistent 0.81 Mbps.

At the same time of the test on three other computers all using the same tester, the same ISP, the same router, the same telephone line in the same house the speed is 2.01Mb/sec. which is the usual speed here.

The fact that they all use XP and have differing hardware should make no difference I think - if I'm wrong I can supply those details. This new computer has a much higher specification than the others but again would this make a difference?

I have done virus and malware scans.

Can anyone explain what could be causing this and how I can fix this please? I can't think of any other relevant info to include at this point.

Zone Alarm Pro

A:Slow download speed on 1 computer fast on others?

Concentrate on the link between your computer and the router. Replace the cable if it is a wired connection. Use the cable from one of the working systems to test. Also use the same port as one of the fast systems.

If no change, swap the network card or check for updated drivers or chipset drivers if the ethernet connector is on the mainboard
Your router may also have QOS settings that give priority to one or more computers based on ip or MAC address.

Are all the computers wired connections?

I seem to have a problem with the speed of my excel program and its willingness to move between cells in a timely manner. My computer is on a network and is not the main, however, all programs on my computer are stand alone programs (Individually installed). We simply share the data (Files) between them. Lately my excel program has been slow to respond to commands. (Type in one cell and tab over to continue typing in another cell and it takes a moment for the curser to catch up.) Although there are quite a few programs where data is shared, Excel seem to be the only one affected. Have talked with Gateway (OEM installed Office 2003) with no luck in solving the problem. Repaired and Reinstalled....still no change. Even tried unhooking the router. This did eliminate the problem, however, I need the shared files on the network. We did switch the ports around to make sure the the router wasn't bad and experienced the same problem no matter what port we were in. No other computer is experiencing the same problem, just mine.
Running windows XP 2002 (SP2) and on a Linksys router network.and if I am reading it right, 71ghz mem.
