Can a novice replace a hard drive in a Compaq Presario?

Q: Can a novice replace a hard drive in a Compaq Presario?

My friend has a presario and the model is not really clear. 2300 he believes. Another guy has it and is trying to buy it off of him for only 250 so i told him that that would be senseless lets just get the hard drive replaced and i told him that i could do it. is there any certain ways that the company has made the replacement difficult? So that it must be done by them? I was told that Toshiba and Sony have made it so that there was some chord that could easily be torn if it was not done in a certain way. Aditionally how specific of a hard drive do i need to find, must it be model specific? and also, how hard is it to upgrade the RAM. If you are doing one you mind as well do the other right. I know this sounds like alot but i just really want to help him out. thanks hope to get a repy soon

Preferred Solution: Can a novice replace a hard drive in a Compaq Presario?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Can a novice replace a hard drive in a Compaq Presario?

It would be easier to help with the exact model number. The Compaqs Ive worked on werent too hard. With the onder ones the case lifts off the frame. And with Compaqs you have to get a file from Compaq and add it to the new hard drive or the Restore Disks wont work. Replacing the RAM is easy. Just make sure you know what kind it has- SDRAM or DDR RAM.

Hi-
I recently had my hard drive begin failing, and after dealing with Dell received a new hard drive. I would rather replace it myself than rely on someone else to do it, as I am trying to learn how to repair my own computer. I guess the word here is HELP! I have looked around the internet, and am feeling that I will be able to accomplish it, but I figured I would come on here first to get some advice, and see whether or not it was a good idea. I have been able to back up my most important documents, and photos (sadly the program freezes everytime I try to put stuff onto a disk, so I was only able to save the most important stuff to a jump drive), and so am ready to begin replacing it. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501. Any tips, hints, how to's would be greatly appreciated!

This is a friend's laptop which will not start. Power light comes on but start button does nothing. My friend has newborn photos of her grandchild on it and would like to get them off. Since I cannot power on via AC, can't check. What are the chances they can be taken off? What is the best way to try? The HD is a different size than mine. Knowing that a shop would charge $50-$75 to try and she is financially not in a position to spend that much.

My friend's Compaq Presario SR5703WM had been working fine, but now when you turn it on, it can't find the hard drive. The only thing it finds is the CD-ROM. The OS is Windows Vista Home Basic. I tried unplugging everything but keyboard and mouse and running system recovery, but it won't let you do it. F8 has no effect so I can't try to start Windows in safe mode and run a scan to see if there is a virus. You can go into the setup menu, and the boot menu. Hitting F12 for system recovery has no effect. It will ask for a system boot disk. I have a hard time believing the hard disk is toast. I'm wondering if it just can't find the hard disk for some reason. Have seen some BIOS action on one screen but I can't remember any details from it. I live an hour away, and I'm trying to figure out a plan to get this up and running again. Any help, please?

A:Compaq Presario Can't Find Hard Drive

Go into BIOS is the HD there or not. Compaq just lists the HD size on its site. However, since the optical drive is SATA and considering that the computer is probably a few years old most likely the HD is also.

Check the cables to the drive (power and data). If the drive is not in BIOS and nothing changes after checking the cables then drive is most likely dead.

From looking at your specs. It looks like you have an IDE 200gb HD now in this desktop. So if you look inside the case & you have a second IDE MB connection and mounting space for another HD, then you could easily add another IDE HD from 200gb to 500gb in size.

Guys,

Any help is welcome!!

I have purchased a new WD Hard Drive(60 GB) which I wanted to install on my Compaq preasrio (5BW160). This has a CD-ROM Drive and a CD-RW drive. On opening the machine, I found that the available bay beneath the Floppy drive does not accomodate the Hard Drive. And there is no existing place elsewhere to install this hard drive. Could somebody please help out by letting me know as to where this drive needs to be placed. Are there any other precautions which i need to consider?? While searching the Compaq website, found something vague about a railing which needs to be purchased(though I have no idea where from??).

Thanks in advance

A:How do I install second hard drive on Compaq Presario (5BW160)

Hi there Mohan
Try one of the local pc shops for the rails for mounting your new HD.....if they dont have any they might be able to give you some suggestions on how or where to get them.

I had a simular situation on a friends pc (hp with a mini tower) and I was able to use a stacking bracket from an old case that I had and it mounted horizontal just fine ...kinda depends on the room that u have in the case ....some even mount vertically.

just some ideas for you

good luck with it

Hi,

My name is Alison, I was trying to fix my laptop and ended up making things a lot worse!!

I ran DBAN and during the process i realized i have no way to reinstall Vista Home Basic OS so i aborted the wipe after 10 or 15 mins into it.

Its a Compaq Presario CQ61. On the back of the L/T i have a sticker with a product key but when i purchased it i never got a CD for Vista. I dont have recovery discs either.

So like i said i stopped DBAN from completing the wipe however now when i turn the L/T on it says,

"NO BOOTABLE DEVICE -- INSERT BOOT DISK AND PRESS ANY KEY"

I tried doing System Recovery but the same message comes up... i also found a Vista Recovery online and burnt to cd-r but it stills says, "NO BOOTABLE DEVICE -- INSERT BOOT DISK AND PRESS ANY KEY"

Is there a way to copy a different version of windows OS from a different PC and make that a 'boot disc' I dont really understand what a boot disc is...

Im not sure what to do to fix this issue... any help or advice is appreciated if you could please explain with details that would be a big help to me.

Thanks in advance!

DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) is a low level format utility. Once you start this, it begins to wipe the drive of your OS. Stopping it in the middle is too late. If you had just run System Recovery would have set your system back to Factory Defaults, but DBAN deleted that too. You cannot copy an installed OS and put it on a different computer. An OS has to be installed from a boot disc (a disc that boots the computer if the OS can't)
What is the Vista recovery disc that you have? Boot into Setup (Bios) and change the Boot order to be CD/DVD rom drive First Boot Device, Save and Exit. Restart the computer with the disc in and you should see the message Press Any Key to Boot From CD/DVD.If it is a Vista install DVD then you can reinstall your OS. If not a Windows disc, you can try contacting your computer manufacturer and see if you can get a Recovery DVD for your computer manufacturer Or get a Vista DVD from Ebay or Craigslist.

Hi, Alison.

A boot disk is the hard drive which your PC boots from and starts Windows, but your hard drive has had the boot files and Windows (or some of it) wiped off it with DBAN. DBAN is used to securely wipe all data from a hard drive prior to selling it or otherwise disposing of it -- this prevents any data from getting into the wrong hands.

You will have to contact HP/Compaq and ask them if they can send you a set of Recovery CDs for your model.

Hello,

I am new to forum. Spent some time the last couple of days trying to get my daughter's Compaq Presario 6330us working. Machine came with two CD/DVD drives, a floppy drive, and a Maxtor 60GB hard drive.

She was not able to boot XP from her hard drive. Her boyfriend had previously tried to recover from recovery CDs, but with no luck. I tried installing a new hard drive (Seagate 160GB) with new one as primary master and old one as primary slave. That didn't work. Didn't recognize either drive. Then took out old drive and used new drive only. Was then able to recover the system. Worked fine for a few hours.

Tried using it later the same day. It had gone to sleep after I thought I had it fixed and reinstalled a lot of her software. When Itried to wake it up, the system froze. Upon reboot, system was no longer recognizing the new drive. It wouldn't let me do another recovery since it can't find a hard drive to recover to. Just keep getting Boot Failure message. Tried new IDE cabling but didn't help. The BIOS is just not detecting the hard drive. Recognizes the 2 CD/DVD drives and floppy drive fine.

I suspect the IDE controller for the hard drive(s) is bad. Can I just install a new card with a new controller rather than repalcing motherboard? Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

A:Compaq Presario 6330 Hard Drive Problems

Anything you do with a Presario 6330 is likely to be trouble and disappointment.
I would replace the EIDE cables, then download all the patches, BIOS, and other drivers and downloads from the www.hp.com site for Presario 6330US. Obtain a copy of WXP Service Pack 2 from Microsoft just in case you can use it ($3.95 from Microsoft).
Give it your best shot with the BIOS and Patch... if it still doesn't detect the drive, consider this an opportunity to get something decent. If it does detect, reformat and reinstall everything, then the entire download set, then run the Windows Service Pack 2 disc. You should then be ok.
This computer has been almost as much trouble as the eMachines desktops, and the failures are too often not fixable.
If money is a problem, take a look at www.pcsurplusonline.com and others that have ruggedized used Dells and IBMs... better than a cheap new one... although you will have to find Windows somewhere.

Hi,

I recently upgraded to windows 7 from vista home premium. I didn't do a recovery disk for vista and only have a repair disk for win7 64-bit. Is there anyway to put this OS on my computer with only the repair disk? HP is taking to long to get my recovery disks and need my laptop. Someone please help me get my computer up and running.

The reason I can't find an operating system is that I installed a new 320gb hd cause the 160gb factory hd became corrupted and no longer usable. Right now I started to follow the steps for the HARD MASTER RESET which I was given 5 options on the screen and chose command prompt. Got as far as where u choose the drive where the disk is, put dir and can't find the exe file.

I acquired this desktop about 2 weeks ago. It's 3 - 4 years old and came with Windows 98SE originally installed, but the owner upgraded it to Windows XP SP1 several months ago. The file system was left in FAT32 format and was not converted to NTFS format.

The Western Digital Caviar WDC100AA hard drive is rated at 10 GB, but shows the following in My Computer:

HARD( C: ) - 7.35 GB

SYSTEM_SAV( D: ) - 1.94 GB

Other than the files in the Recycle Bin and in System Restore containing the same information in both partitions, everything else appears to be Compaq-related files that are years old.

What would be the best way to consolidate all 9.29 GB into the C: partition and do away with the D: partition, and what would be the best program to use?

Don't tell me to reformat the hard drive and start from scratch because that's not what I want to do.

My computer crashed yesterday.  I think thats the term for it.  Its running windows xp.  Well, I shut it off at night, and when I tried to turn it on in the morning, the computer came on , the fan started spinning, lights came on, but the hard drive kept making clicking noises.  So, I hurriedly took out the hard drive, and retrieved my data from the hard drive through that IDE-USB adapter.  So, at least that was safe now

I think the disk is bad, and I need to replace it.  However I dont really want to pay for a whole new operating system.  Is there a way to transfer the operating system from the old drive to the new drive with its activation status, so that I dont start gettting those pesky activation notices?

A:my computer crashed compaq presario sr1630NX. its the hard drive

You can use disk imaging software, such as Macrium Reflect FREE Edition, to clone the old hard disk to a new one.  Once the new cloned disk has been installed, you will be asked to restart your system after you first boot it, so that Windows can reconfigure for the hardware change.  You will not need to reactivate Windows if you do this.

One thing to watch out for is that if the new disk is a different size to the old one and you have more than one partition on the disk, the software may dynamically resize the partitions and if you have diagnostics and/or recovery partitions you might want to keep the size of those the same as on the old disk.

If there is anything on the drive which you need to recover I would recommend doing that first.

Test the hardware using the seagate 'Sea Tools' for dos utility found at the following link;

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools

If that shows no errors and assuming you have either backed your data up elsewhere or don't need any of the data on the drive (as this would destroy all data) Try using the windows setup routine to delete all partitions and then re-create/format them.

O.K. When visiting my little sister this last Christmas, I attempted to upgrade her computer from 98 to XP proffesional, everything went smooth for a couple of days, till the computer contracted the Blaster worm, a few hours before I was suppsed to fly home, and all my work got scrapped. Since then, she has maxed the ram to 512 mb, and bought a new hard drive, western digital 120gb that she would like to use. As we are in different parts of the country, I am guiding her through all setup instructions over the phone...
We got the hard drive installed, and the new ram, and powered up the pc. It detected the ram, and moved to a screen that said operating system not detected. Here, I instructed her to insert the XP proffesional disk into the drive and reboot the computer. Then we get a screen that says the following, I am typing what she is telling me, not what I am looking at:

INF file TXT7 Setup.FIF is corrupt or missing
Status 40847
Setup cannot continue

I tried to boot using the XP boot disks 3.5 inch, but for some reason, her 3.5 inch drive is no longer recognized by the computer. We entered the bios, and it only references the cd-rom, and the hard drive in the boot sequence.

What can I do here? What has been done wrong? Any advice is appreciated since I pretty much killed my sisters computer this summer, when I attempted the upgrade and got the virus. Thanks in advance.

A:New hard drive, compaq presario 7470, can't install operating system?

If i understand this one right . the floppy disk is inside the computer but not recoqnized ? If that is the case, you'll need to recheck the connections (IDE and power ). It's very possible that you knocked one of them out in the process of installing the new HDD.
Now when it comes to the setup of windows XP , does the setup routine offers to "format " the hdd. It should since it's a brand new virgin hdd. At that point you need to let windows XP format the drive ( as in don't skip this step)
On the other hand if you haven't got that far into the setup routine, then you'll need to make the floppy drive functional first then use the WD floppy disk ( which should have came with the drive , if the drives was "retail bought") to check and see if there are any problems and also will help in setting up the XP

Hello all great website!

Compaq Presario 7000 series (model #7QSM11) using Windows ME, AMD 1332 mhz processor. My sister's computer. Hard drive was a 60GB, but it died. So I bought a new hard drive actually tried a 160GB first but thought the 137GB issue was the problem so now I am trying a 120GB western digital Caviar.

I found and successfully flashed the latest bios. (ROM date 3/28/02-786K2 Family). I checked the bios and it does see all 120GB. But when I goto partition it, I run into problems. Three methods tried: I tried to use Western Digitals included CD-ROM, even created the DOS boot floppy that they recommended on another system. Doesn't work keeps coming up with an error that something like A:\Auto???.exe not found. I checked the floppy that file is there?? Comes up whether I am booting from the floppy or from the CD-ROM.

So I tried fdisk from a Windows ME boot disk. Fdisk will only find/or report 24GB. I cleared the partition and tried using the Compaq restore disks but they came up with the same problem.
Am I right in thinking that this is a Windows ME issue?
Can you tell me how to fix this problem?

My computer is a Dell 8100, also running Windows ME but with a Intel P4, I installed a 200GB hard drive and had to flash the bios, and then I am not sure if it was Maxtor's DDO dynamic disk overlay or Intel's application accelerator, or the Flashed Bios, but Windows ME sees the whole hard drive.

Hi, A friend has a Presario 900Z (they are the build your own Presarios) notebook with 2 bad USB ports (looks like the pins are bent). He wants to see if the ports can be replaced. She said I still have to bring it to a service center to find out.

Does anyone know anything about replacing Presario USB ports? How easy is it to replace? I've opened desktops many times, but, have never open up a laptop. Is it tough? Any advice on opening it? Thanks.

If you have files to rescue from Vista you can Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console.

Otherwise boot the flash stick, choose Custom install, delete all partitions and create new partition(s) as desired, format and install.

This is only for the ones that like me love their old gear to bits and try to bring it up to a level, where it may still be of some use...

I managed to get this little sweatheart to run Win 95, got it networked and have it access the internet. But the next bottleneck is the capacity of its hard drive...only 220 mb, that means after installing win95, there is only 32 mb left to play with...I have one 1GB and one 4.3 GB hard drive, that I tried to install in this computer. They both would run, but unfortunately the bios does not seem to accept any larger hard disc space than 220 mb and uses only this amount on either hard drives...Is there a way around this problem or am I stuck with 220 mb for good????

Would be grateful for any advice that gets me out of this...

Okay, sorry for the very little information, but someone that I know called me up and told me that "Their compaq Presario won't boot from a CD and they tinkered with the Boot up settings already, and it won't boot from the cd, because they had Vista Premium and they screwed it, and now they have Business, and it doesn't have any of their stuff on it. The CD is apparently a Backup cd, so if you have any suggestions on what to do, I only use dell computers so I am not totally familiar with the configurations of the boot menu right now.

What does that mean? Why did they go out and buy Business when they had Home Premium?

I bought a Compaq Presario about 6 weeks ago. No problem booting from a Restore DVD. Is his computer still under warranty? If so, I think he should call HP tech support. Also, did that computer come with a Restore CD/DVD or did it have a Recovery partition on the hard drive? It most likely had the latter; it would definitely had one or the other.

In what way did your friend "tinker with the Boot up settings"? Let's face it, your friend appears to be not very computer savvy. That's going to make this more difficult.

I have a Compaq Presario 64 bit, dual core processor, with an AMD processor. I do have wired high speed cable with 60MPS and processor has 4 gb of ram sticks. My question is? What can I,, or How do I,, know what is safe to delete on my Hard Drive (D) ? I don't want to delete something, that may damage my pc, or make it, so that it will not even work, at all. There is a lot of junk in my (D) drive that I have never used. Some maybe 1 or 2 times, all the years I had this. I have windows vista. Does someone that has or had a similiar Desktop pc know this answer to my question? Again my pc is a Compaq Presario SR5610F dual core 64 bit,,AMD Processor

A:how to clean up D drive on a compaq presario SR5610F

The D: drive should hold the Recovery Partition, which being Vista, would reinstall Vista.  The hard drive, if original would be 320GB.  You stand the risk of removing something needed, if you do not know what you are doing.  On a unit that old, and assuming that you wish to still use it, I would leave it alone.  Just use it as is.

OS is Windows Vista Home Basic. When I try to set a recovery point it tells me that I need to remove data from the D: drive to make space. The system is set up to overwrite previous restore points but it doesn't work at all so I can't get it to record new restore points.Anyone out there who can offer me advice on how to fix the system???I accept that I am a newbie and that I may have screwed it up but would be very grateful to anyone who can sort me out. Hey guys, this is my fist post here, so i appologise if im in the wrong place, just need some help with something. Basically I have compaq / hp laptop with windows vista, and the DVD drive is no longer working. After a substantial ammount of research I have found fixes including the upper and lowr filters in the regestry, which didn't work, and have even removed the drive to try to get it to re-install the drivers. After testing the drive itself in another laptop I can confirm it is in good working order.

After a while I decided to set the laptop back to the factory settings using the built in recovery tool. This didn't solve the issue either. I have tried to use bootable CD's in the drive on start up and changed the order in which the laptop boots up, but nothing seems to work.

When a CD or DVD is in the machine, it powers up (lights and noise), but the computer dosn't seem to respond to it in any way. Also, the drive dosn't show up in Device manager or my computer and there is no entry in the device manager for DVD/CD drives.

Basically what im trying to figure out, is if this is a motherboard issue of some sort, and also, if I was to buy an external DVD drive, would I be likely to have the same issue?

Any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Can I manually start the recovery drive somehow? My windows on my Presario got all messed up somehow and I went to press F10 to do a "Destructive Recovery" and reinstall everything and the ntlrd or something like that is missing. I put in a DOS disk to explore the recovery partition to see if there was a way to activate it manually. I couldn't find a file a file that would help me out.

Can I start my Compaq/HP recovery partition manually? It is definatly in tact with all its files.

Hello everyone!

I have been having this issue recently that I need help with. I am fairly clued up when it comes to computers, but this one has me stumped.

I have a COMPAQ Presario F500AU
1.8GHz AMD Turion x64 X2 Duel Core processor
Nvidia GeForce 6100
Broadcom Wireless
15.4" WXGA Widescreen LCD display
Windows 7 Ultimate beta Ver. 1000 (Windows Vista Home Basic was standard with it)

I recently had to take my DVD drive out and re-insert it due to dusty contacts. I put my laptop back together and inserted the DVD drive back in.

Please note, when I did all this, I was wearing a static strap connected to the computer while working on it on an anti-static mat with the mains and battery disconnected from it.

When I insert my DVD drive into the laptop, my laptop lights up, but I get no video signal. After about 30 seconds my computer turns off and on again. If I take my DVD drive out of my laptop, it boots as per normal.

Has anyone got any ideas as to how I could solve this issue?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
David

Hi all, as the user name sugests I.T is all a bit tech for me {at the moment} by you got to start somewhere right, So i've been asked to set up 6 brand new Dell laptops bought for my software engineers in the industy - i have been given a 7th Dell laptop same as the other 6 which has had all the required software needed by our engineers for the machinery programing process installed on it - i've also been given a 1TB western Digital {USB connected} external hard drive for cloning the software and transfering it on to the other laptops, so this afternoon i cloned the 7th laptop with all the software on it using system back up - creating a system image file on the external hard drive, but when it came to transfering this image on to the other laptops, i thought i'd beable to restore {set up the C: drive} the new laptop from the file path E: {the external hard drive path} but it doesn't have the option {E: drive or USB input or external drive} only system restore/back up disk or network path, i can't use the network path as the company has access/permission,firewall blockers that basically stop our engineers laptops from working on customers sites when online, which kind of stops any work from happening, and is why the company I.T deparment wont help me out in this situation, any help or guidance greatly appreciated as i really have thrown myself in at the deep end

Have you tried all of the ports (USB I'd guess, but you didn't specify) available? Does it work with a different computer? Do other devices connected to the same kind of port work (like printers, scanners, flash drives)?

And what exactly does the error say?

It's always good to give as many details as possible!

Hey all, posting from my neighbor's PC... After experiencing a lot of lag and high comp % we began to diagnose the problem closer.. Ran scans using S&D, ad-aware, trend micro etc. in safe mode and malware was detected and removed but something still seems to be in control.... He tried running the Recovery Console which came with his computer but after every install still the problem remained.. His recovery console is the D: drive. I'm guessing whatever is in control of his computer also was able to infect the Recovery Drive...My question: Do I need to completely wipe his hard drive and do a complete clean re-install of the operating system to get rid of this bug? Or is there still hope?Symptoms: Problems first began when Windows Update failed to update and the windows Security Advisor had popped up and said he wasnt protected although everything was on and running.. At this point Trend Micro became unresponsive when trying to reopen. (I knew right away this was malware which began the scans in safe mode directly after) I'm not getting the Security Advisor issue any more but am experiencing a lot of random lag and high comp usage % doing real simple tasks. Also.. whenever I double click on say My Computer or any file for that matter the Windows Search box comes up... the only way to access folders on my desktop is by actually right clicking and selecting Open. I've ran multiple scans over and over and still cant seem to figure it out... Also.. when trying t... Read more

Hello lilevee22,

Before the problem started was anything added to or installed on the system?

Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.

Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get

the Advanced Options.

Let us know if able to get the system to boot with either option.

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

My primary HDD was failing so I backed it up and replaced it with a larger 1TB drive.  After reinstalling everything the new drive is displaying the same size as my old drive and the extra space available is unallocated.  I can allocate it as
a separate drive but I find that annoying and would prefer to just have my primary C: drive show up with all of the available space.  I formatted the extra space and made it available separately as drive G hoping that I could EXPAND drive C but that option
is not highlighted as selectable on drive C for some reason.  Should I just live with this extra space or is there a way to easily combine C and the new G space?
