system crashed and won't restore

Q: system crashed and won't restore

We have Windows7 and an exterior drive backup. This exterior backup advised us this morning that a partition was full.

We tried to shut the system down - and it asked if we wanted to 'correct' something in the system (it said it was trying to decide). We opted to 'save' the changes and were prompted to reboot the system,

When the computer came back on - there was a white line across the middle of the screen, changed to black and the whole screen 'faded to black'.

Since then, we have tried a variety of things

We did ALT F10 - the system goes to Windows and the Ace restore menu

We did a system restore (NOT FULL)

Then we got

Error Code 1392 The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable

I SOOOOOOOOOO hope someone can give us a little direction to get this thing back up and running

One of the back up files says it was created in Sept 7 - and we cannot get into it. For some reason - the ongoing back up is not showing any more recent date than Sept

We DO NOT want to lose the data that hopefully is still in the computer

Any suggestions would really be appreciated - thank you

Preferred Solution: system crashed and won't restore

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

That sounds like your hard (external) disk is corrupted. Who is the maker on the drive?

My Lenovo T60 crashed and was not able to be repaired. I do not know what caused my laptop to crash, but according to the PC Tech, the hard drive was reformatted. To be honest, I am here in the Philippines and did not bring my recovery disks with me & I am not so sure about the technical ability of the PC Tech.

That being said, he installed Windows XP Professional on my laptop and partitioned my hard drive. I have a 250 GB Western Digital HD. Before my laptop crashed, the drive was NOT partitioned. After the installation, I now have two drives, C, with 40 GB and D, with about 200 GB.

I lost a lot of photos and music, and other important documents. I decided to try to recover some of these files and used Recuva. The good news is that a lot of missing documents can be recovered. While listing the files and looking at them, I noticed that I had several System Restore points that I can recover.

My question is, can I use the most recent System Restore point that I recover and use that to reinstall all the missing software? I had MS Office 2007 Professional, MS Visio 2007, MS Project 2007, and other software that I do not have the installation disks with me.

From what I have read, System Restore will reinstall the system (registry, files, and software only) and not the My Documents folder.

If this can work, where do I put the system restore file? If need be, I can delete the new partition and resize the C partition, restore, and then repartition the hard drive afterwards.

A:Can I use a recovered System Restore point file to restore missing sw crashed laptop?

Since you already lost everything, try the System restore but first backup everything Recuva found onto a USB key. If your version Windows was not the same what the tech installed, it might not work. Also, he should have first ask you what to do with your files before formatting.
Otherwise you will have to wait till you can re-install everything.

hi all,

my win 7 pc crapped out. its not the disk. i have an image made on acronis. i bought a new win 10 pc. whats the easiest way to get that win 7 image with all my applications onto the new win 10 desktop? i want to get rid of windows 10. i would like my image working on new pc (new hardware) as i will not have to reinstall and configure everything again.

i tried swapping the old pc disk into the new pc, but the new pc would not boot: says invalid disk. could it have something to do with the MBR or that UEFI thing?

A:System crashed, how to restore Windows7 system image into new desktop

you're going to be in a world of pain if you want to do this but have no access to the old computer. In this situation, a SYSPREP with the generalize function is run in Windows 7 to prepare it for migration to new hardware.

You can try cold turkey like you did, you may have to switch to AHCI drivers from IDE or IDE to AHCI depending on what you had before to get it to boot. The boot sector may be a problem too. If you used standard MBR in the past then check your BIOS on the new PC to see what adjustment you can make.

I was recently helped by Jack & Jill in another forum.

I received clearance from the Malware forum to create this post.

After my topic was closed, I installed the updated Windows Vista Service Pack (the one I had was outdated). Upon completion of update my system crashed. I cannot even run System Restore (it never reaches completion).
When I try to start my computer I get the following message:

hi, my friend with windows 8.1 64bit has done a system restore with 2 external usb2 harddisks attached. all programs have been deleted and one of the external hdd's has 'crashed' - the other is fine. the crashed one has its driveletter turned into a small partition names 'restore' and the most part of the hdd as a no-driveletter raw partition. the second ext hdd was okay and retained readable data and driveletter.

I have already tried restoring the crashed hdd with third party recovery software, but only a collection of flac audio's are readble after restoring tot the (spacey) internal c harddrive. the majority of mkv's avi's and dvd videos on the hdd are unreadble.

My question is, as the original driveletter of the crashed external usb hdd is now one named 'recovery' , can this hdd (where i manually assigned a new driveletter to the data part of this crashed hdd, which is not readble, save by recovery sw)
be more effectively restored somehow by windows recovery system itself?
If so, how do i go about that task?
(Windows 8.1 itself from inetrnal c drive runs okay, although i had to reinstall all the user installed software)
I am an advanced windows 7 user but have not had much expierience with win8(.1) recovery useage.

help would be nice.

How long did you leave the computer unplugged? If you just unplugged and plugged in right away your not giving the hardware time to reset. Unplug the computer and leave it sit for a bought 10 minutes. That should be enough time for the system to reset. I suspect it may be a hardware lock. Not ruling out software as yet.

Because Windows 10 uses a hybrid shutdown the procedure I am outlining may not be able to mount the drive so you can access your data. If you use a Windows Live account to login to windows the data may be encrypted.

On another computer download Fatdog64. This is a linux distro that will boot and hopefully recover you data to an external hard drive.

Here is the iso file.  Fatdog64-702.iso

Once downloaded you can burn the iso to a CD or DVD by right clicking the iso file and selecting Burn Disk Image. You may need to access your BIOS/UEFI to make your optical drive the first boot device. Depending on the make and model of the computer you can press a key at boot to open a boot menu where you can select your boot device.

At the Fatdog Desktop you will see your hard drive partitions listed as sda1....sda2... sda3 etc depending on the number of partitions on the disk. For a Windows 10 computer your files may be on sda3. Click once on a sda partition. If the partition can mount a File Manage window will open. Clicking once on a folder will open it. If you do not see your files then close the file manager and select another sdaX partition.  If you are able to see your files then post back and I will give instructions on copying files to a USB flash drive or USB external drive. This will at least get your important data back if the partitions can mount. Hopefully they will.

Can someone provide some detail about the differences in
content between Win7 system repair disc, system restore point and system image?
And perhaps I should add Dell ISO recovery image to the list.  I don't know (yet) if that is different from the Win7 system image option, or if the latter invokes the Dell ISO recovery image program instead.  If it matters, I have a Dell Precision
5510 laptop.
At the very least, is each option a superset of the other, perhaps in the order that I specify above?
Ideally, what are the folder names that each contains, if indeed their content can be described by complete folders?
I am trying to determine which of those options I need to create in order to have
complete recovery capability.
I have read the following support.microsoft.com articles:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17423/windows-7-create-system-repair-disc
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17101/windows-7-system-recovery-options
Those descriptions are indequate for my purposes, in part because of differences in terminology.
For example, the System Recovery Disc option "can help you repair Windows", whereas the System Restore (Point) option "restores your computer's
system files".
In that context, are "Windows" and "system files" synonyms content-wise; or is one a superset of the other; or do they have some non-overlapping content?
I suspect that the System Recovery Disc contains only "Windows"... Read more

I have first been getting these problems when I downloaded Comodo IS Pro. Apparently when I approached them for help, the technician did not reply to me after telling me to install.

Thus I did a system restore and the computer could load in normal mode(however the screen, etc loaded slow like hell.)

From Problem Reports and solution, these are the service that crashed:

But guard32.dll from comodo is the module causing it according to Problem Reports and Solution, but anyone knows why and how to solve it?

I've been on here reading lots of posts for a few days and haven't quite found what I'm looking for so I'm posting in hopes of finding a solution.

I have a year and a half old HP Notebook, out of warranty, with an OEM Win 7 (I think 32 bit).
I have the Key off the bottom of the machine.
I did not make back-ups or any Repair or Recovery Disks

About a week a ago my HD crashed and wouldn't boot to anything but the windows logo. I ran all diagnostics available in the BIOS and it determined that the HD was bad. I tried Recovering with the internal Recovery drive/partition and now when I boot I get a screen asking me to Repair Windows or Start normally. If I choose Repair, it goes to a screen with a blue background and white light rays coming in from the top. For a second a window pops up and disappears (It looks like a command line window) and then nothing else happens. There is a functioning mouse arrow on screen, but nothing else and nothing seems to be happening. I've let this sit for hours just in case and nothing happens. If I choose Start normally, it goes to the Win logo screen and tries to start up and within 5 min it goes to the "blue and white light ray screen".

I have assumed that this drive is no longer going to work and have obtained a brand new drive, exactly the same as the original. Now I need to find a way to install this and get it up and running with Win 7. ( I am aware that I can order Recovery Disks from HP and get this done quickly, but right now... Read more

I am working on a Compaq R4000 Presario laptop. Service TAG: R4012US running XP Home Edition. P/N: px356ua#aba w/1.5GB RAM.

Brought in today. Owner tried installing McAfee and it became non-responsive as far as getting onto the Internet and loading programs. I tried uninstalling but it doesn't appear in add/remove programs and there isn't any uninstall program in the program folder. I tried System Restore five times and it wouldn't revert back to any previous restore points. I then performed a chkdsk /r /f and once that was completed the system will not load XP. I get the advance selection of safe mode . . .and all of that but it simply keeps rebooting.

Unless someone has any other ideas here, is there a site where I can download restore disks for XP? It looks as if Microsoft no longer makes that available. It's been a frustrating day to be sure.

Oh yes, I have tried loading the last known good configuration, debugging, etc. Nothing works.

I'm back again with what seems to be my favourite problem - already encountered twice on my daughter's HP laptop and now have it on my IBM desktop.

WIN XP has crashed - I have both an XP CD and a complete recovery suite of CDs from manufacturer. The recovery CDs will only allow a complete restore to manufacturer original config (with loss of data) but I can access the WIN XP recovery console from the XP CD ....

Seems when attempting either a reinstal or repair with the XP CD that my hard drive is in fact already erased - no existing WIN XP installation is found....

I get C: Partition 1 [unknown] 148625Mb <148624 mb free>
Partition 2 <inactive> OS/2 Boot Man 4001 Mb 180mb free

From previous experience that tells me there is NOTHING to recover on my hard drive ...am I right ...so I may as well go for a complete restore with no repair/recovery attempt ?

Yes - I did backup the C:"My Documents" folder yetsrday to an external hard drive before the crash so it's not a total disaster (I realise now I should have probably backed up C: documents and settings...but that's down to experience now) ...all I may lose is my email history ...

Before I go for the big restore....any advice from the experts ?

Yesterday, I was simply browsing the FirearmsTalk forums when I noticed none of my pages would load (yet it still showed a good connection). So I open the Network Connections and almost immediately my computer shuts down. I reboot, and the following error message comes up;

"Windows Could Not Start Because the Following File Is Missing or Corrupt: /system32/hal.dll

Please reload this file (or something to that effect)"

After rebooting again, I could get as far as the Setup (F2 at startup), or the screen that would let me choose the "Safe Mode", "Last Known Good Configuration", etc. before this message would come up again (in other words, no options would let me get past the original error message).

So, because everything important was on a different computer, I decided to simply reload Windows via the original recovery CD's. The original System CD and 3 Recovery CD's seemed to be working until right before the last one would finish, where I would get the error message;

"Fail in creating or opening a file"

then

"Cannot find preload.tag for SetBootIni-"(not sure if the message continues, the window looks like it cuts it off)

Then it asks me to restart the entire process by inserting the first System CD, to which the process just repeats.

USE SYSTEM RESTORE WHEN YOU CAN'T BOOT YOUR COMPUTER

If your system has failed to the point where you cannot access the Windows GUI either through booting normally or through safe mode, you may still have the chance to use the System Restore feature if you have it enabled, by running it from the command prompt. To do this:

Restart your computer and press F8 after the POST screen to bring up the Windows XP boot menu. Choose 'boot in safe mode with command prompt.'

If your system gets to the command prompt successfully, type '%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe' and then press enter. Follow the onscreen instructions to restore your computer to a previous saved point.

Hi Pd163 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Immediate concern is the information you have on the computer.
Would you need it? Using a live boot media would allow you to do it.

If you have gone through the advance recovery options offered by Windows  ,then perhaps you can consider a factory reset (hoping that the harddrive is still ok). Repair using a Windows image can also help if issue are just on the software side . One Key Recovery (page18) may be the last option.

Update us how it would go best for you at this point.

Hi all!

I had problems with my foxtabs.... that I know know was a flash update problem. Before I knew I went and did a restore to an earlier date.

It did not help the problem, I went and searched for an answer, found one.
and wanted to undo the restore, as I had lost a program.

I said undo and left the puter to it's job.
I came back to find 0c80000098 not right but close to it.

It said if had crashed and needed me top put in my sys disc and do a repair, OK so I did and it came back and said it could not repair the puter!?

I mean really it is the same disc that I used to install the darned thing in the first place, so what ever it needed was on the disc.....

Is there anything I can do, to fix this, or is there a way to reinstall 7 and some how pull all my stuff back into the new os?

I went in with a Linux disc and have pulled off some of my files, but I finally had that puter perfect.

In fact I had just installed a program to allow me to clone it.... ah irony!
Thanks for any and all input!

question: if you shut off restore does it still keep the last restore points? and is there a way to restore in safe mode (cant boot in reg mode) if restore is shut of. when i try and turn on sys restore in safe mode it say "i cant".

any suggestions?

A:System restore question? Can i restore in safe mode i restore was turned off?

when you turn off restore you lose all the restore points...thats why you cant use them...If you can boot in safe mode and backup all the things you can't live without...then we will try to fix the booting problem

I left my laptop running for a while when i left the room. When I came back it had frozen, I hadn't been doing anything untoward, I had been running a few programs at once, just like firefox and word. Anyway I had to turn it off with the power button. Then when I tried turning it back on I was able to log in but there was no desktop, just a black screen, same thing when I used safe mode. Now whenever I turn it on it goes to a disc check and when it gets to a certain number it says its unreadable and safe search just plain doesn't work. If you can tell me a way to get back to normal that would be great but it looks to me like the whole thing is pretty much f**ked and I'm gonna lose all my files. So is there anyway I could do a restore to factory settings (restoring to another time also didn't work) would that even help?

Not sure when this issue started, so not sure if this has anything to do with XP Pro SP3. System Restore appears to function normally until attempt to restore. Select restore point > confirmation screen, click next > result = stays on confirmation screen. No cpu activity. Disabled SR and tried to re-register dll's. Was only able to re-register srclient.dll. Other dll's report loaded but "DllServerRegister point not found. . ." Suggestions please.

A:System Restore runs, creates restore points, but can't restore

Hello & welcome to TSF,

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, restart the computer. If the error still occurs, search the hard drive for the presence of the Wininit.ini file, and then rename it. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Restart your computer in Safe or DOS Mode.
2. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
3. In the Named box, type wininit.ini.
4. In the Look in box, click Local hard drives, and then click Find Now.
5. Right-click the Wininit.ini file, click Rename, type wininit.xxx, and then click OK.
6. Close the Find Files window, and then run System Restore again.
7. If the previous steps do not resolve the problem, run the following command to repair the damaged portions of your registry:
scanreg /fix

Hello flakeup. Welcome to TSF.

Please note that more than one round may be needed to properly eradicate malware. In co-operation with the cleaning process, please: do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to do so, to make it easier on us as it is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs;
do not run any tools or scans other than those requested;
follow all instructions in the order they are presented;
if you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, ask before continuing;
stay with this thread until given the All Clear, as absence of symptoms does not always mean the machine is clean;
do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad making sure the word wrap is unchecked. (In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.)
Also note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within three days this thread will be closed.

I thought if I deleted the 956 mb swap partition it would correct the system from trying to load Grub, but it actually made things worse and now I cannot even load the windows xp disc. Now when I try to load the xp disc it says inspecting system configuration then the screen goes blank.........I dont know what to do! Help!

My XP.system have been crashed , I was doing some particular updates and when it done and reboot the system I can not log in to the XPsystem .

I have two systems in my device the other one is ubuntu , as we know when I turn on the device the system Give me a suggestions to select which system I want so I choose windows but the problem is the system again restart from it self and it still do that just with xp but it okay with linux , I think I need to delete the files of current updates but how can I log in to windows ?

- I can not reach to the welcome screen
- Safe mood as normal mood , which mean it still restart
- I lost the CD's of system

A:My XP.system have been crashed

From the Advanced Options Menu choose Disable automatic restart on system failure instead of Safe Mode.
Post the lines under the Technical Information section, the Stop code and any file names it mentions.

Do you know which updates you were installing?
If you were installing the KB977165 update, and have the version before MS added code to check for the presence of a rootkit, that could be the cause. Installing the update on an infected system causes blue screens or restarts.

Check the Windows partition for this folder:
WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB977165$
If present, check in the spuninst subfolder for the spuninst.txt file

The spuninst.txt file contains the commands that the Recovery Console would use to uninstall the update. It's a list of Delete and Copy commands to delete the new files, and restore the old version. The last command makes a copy of the spuninst.txt file named spuninst.tag so that Windows Update will know it's been removed.

You can do each command from Ubuntu if you don't have an XP CD.
If you have access to a Vista/Win 7 DVD or can download one of the Vista/Win 7 Recovery Environment CDs, I have a batch file that can uninstall the update as well.

Vista Recovery Environment CD
64 bit Vista
32 bit Vista
Win 7 Recovery Environment CD

Early today my computer was perfect, then came the disater, I was informed that I needed to install SP1 (vista service pack 1). I did so, and towards the end of the process, it crashed my system, I mean a total, complete crash. There is no windows, no prompt, no curser, just a black screen. No matter how many times I turn my compter on and off, the same black screen is looking back at me. The microsoft website is not helping, they want to charge me to fix a problem caused by their system (dont get me wrong, happy to pay for service). Is there any way I can restore my system without inserting the start up disks again.

Added: While waiting for a reply I have decided that I would have to start over. However, my computer will not even read the discs to start over, there is just nothing. Just black. (3 years ago, I had to start over, it was simple,I just put the manufacturer disks in my disk drive, started the computer, and it wiped everything and started again). Any suggestions would be so much appreciated.

A:SP1 just crashed my system

Hi,

are you using a PC or laptop? When you turn the PC off then back on, do you see the POST screen, i.e. the manufacturer's logo and/or a series of checks denoted by white text on a black screen?

It could be that the PC isn't fully turning off and you're going straight back to the screen you're seeing. If that's the case, remove the power lead from the PC after turning off (or remove the laptop battery), wait 10 seconds then reconnect and power on.

First off, thanks to everyone ahead of time for helping me!

Alright, so I just moved to a new house and hooked my computer up to the internet for the first time on the new IP. I was on for just a few minutes when I got a "Send error report" saying that "the system has recovered from a serious error". When I go to click anything, I get the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!! Now it happens everytime within a couple of minutes when I load my desktop. Now I don't really think it has anything to do with a different IP or anything like that, but I've been messing around with other forums for days now and still haven't been able to fix this problem so I decided to jump in the forums and post my own thread and just hope I can get this fixed.

A:My system crashed, please help!

Hopefully the computer wasn't dropped when you moved from house to house. Also hopefully the computer was packed up right and didn't get banged around inside the truck or whatsover.

One thing you can do is to check the HDD for any errors. Go to the manufacturer's website of the hard-drive and download the latest diagnostics utility. Then put the program onto a CD, boot the computer to the CD, and test HDD for any errors. If there are any errors, then it's time to backup your files ASAP.

Another thing you can do is to perform a windows repair on your computer and hopefully windows repair will fix the problem.

Also try reseating computer parts. Reseat the videocard, cpu, and memory sticks and make sure they are on the motherboard tight.

You can also perform a check disk repair. Go into my computer and right click on the C: drive. Then choose properties and then click on the tools menu. Click on "check now" on the error-checking section and then make sure the two boxes are checked. Click on start and reboot your computer and let check repair do it's thing.

I am no expert, but the same thing happened to me with my laptop in October. I called my computer manufacturer's tech service and we went through most of the F8 options and none of them worked except for the options under recovery manager: I had a choice of full factory recovery or recovery with automatic data backup and I chose recovery with automatic data backup. Because I chose recovery with backup,I retained all of my files. I don't know if your computer has that option or not. But,if all else fells you may be able to do that.

There are probably other things you can do first. Other people with more knowledge than me might have other suggestions,I'm sure.

Good Luck!

Later on I shut down the computer when a storm came through, and about an hour ago powered it back up. Windows will NOT boot up. It continued to recycle, and I am unable to get into SAFE mode, nor will it boot with the last known good settings. I tried "debugging mode", "disable automatic restart on system failure", and "safe mode with networking" (out of desperation), but nothing's working. I do not have a recovery disc, but I do have the OS re-installation disc that came with the computer, plus the SP2 disc I got from Microsoft. What's my next step? Thanks.
