I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just installed windows 8.1 pro on an MSI z97 pc mate motherboard with I5 3.3 ghz processor, 16 gb ddr3 1600 MHz ram, with embedded realtek pcie gbe NIC. I checked and found that hardware virtualization is enabled by default in the BIOS.

I tried to set up a virtual switch using the latest bios and drivers from MSI. I created a virtual switch choosing the external option and the share with host OS option. I then connected to the VM. No network connectivity on VM but host still worked.

I then used autopatcher to update windows 8.1 on the vm. I removed and reinstalled the virtual switch choosing external option and share with host OS option. Same conditions occurred.
And then I installed the latest NIC driver. Same problem - media disconnected.

I tried this process with the latest driver from the realtek website which was a couple years more up to date. I had such high hopes! Same problem.

I then used msconfig to prevent all non-Microsoft services from starting and rebooted. I removed and recreated the switch and I was still hoping for success. Same exact conditions occurred.

These are the conditions that occur whenever an external switch with host os sharing enabled is installed in between all of these troubleshooting steps. It looks exactly the same every time...
The host machine can still access the network but it does so through the virtual switch. Ipconfig /all on the host reveals the following...

I am trying to map a network drive to a remote server. The server is not on the same network as the computer I am trying to map the drive on.

I have the external IP address, the port number, and the drive letter on the server.  I have entered http:// IP Address:Port Number/drive letter.  I get an error message stating that the drive path is incorrect.

I am using the network drive mapping wizard in the Computer screen.

The remote server is part of a local network with 3 other computers running in the VMware workstation connected by NAT connection .I run this server port number 9000 of host machine  by Port forwarding method.

I need help with the proper syntax for mapping the drive to the remote server.  I can't get my Windows 10 machine to connect to the server.  I need to get shared folder of virtual machine in another computer.

How do I map a drive to my remote server?  Please be specific as I am not that familiar with networking.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I am running a server in vmware workstation which is connected with NAT connection. I made port forwarding for access this virtual machine from outside the host computer. That is when type host computer ip:9000 in chrome it redirects to server web interface
which is running in vmware workstation because I redirect port 8080 in virtual machine to port 9000 in host machine.

Now I want to get all shared folders in the virtual machine . when I typed host ip in run dialog box it gives only the host machine shared folders . when i typed host ip along with port number it shows error.

What should I do for getting all shared folders of virtual machine in other computer in same network.

Note:Should not use bridge network connection.

Whether it is possible?.

Thank you for your help in Advance.

I have an old program that will run on XP but not Win 7 Pro and I am using Windows Virtual PC on my laptop to run it. It works fine but I cannot access files (share drives) from the main hard drive, i.e., the Win 7 file structure. I can work with the VM XP file structure but not the main files. I am able to access flash drives from the VM and so I can move the files around this way but it is very cumbersome. This machine is not on any sort of network. I have done the same thing on my desktop and have exactly the same problem (it operates on Win 7 Pro as well). Security is not a concern; I am the only user of these machines.

I have read what I can find about this and tried resetting all kinds of "sharing" permissions, including sharing just a folder instead of the entire drive, enabling sharing from both the Win 7 side and the VM XP side, etc. I've tried everything I can but to no avail.

Can anyone offer some ideas and/or direct me to a thorough discussion of this issue? Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
I've just installed a virtual machine (running XP Pro) onto my Vista machine. The Vista machine has a USB external hard drive attached. When trying to access the data on this hard drive from within the virtual machine (via the bridged network link between the virtual machine and the host) it is incredibly slow. I've tried moving the USB hard drive to another PC on the network (running XP Pro) and accessing it from the XP Pro virtual machine on the first PC, and this works fine. I'd be very grateful for any help or ideas!

Host OS: Windows 2003 Server running on domain under Active Directory
Guest Virtual Machine OS: Same

The Host Machine and Host OS operate as expected, and can interact with everything in the entire network, including

Other w2k3 servers
Domain Controllers
Linux servers
Linux PCs
However, the Virtual Machine was created using - and runs within - MS Virtual Machine 2005. The VM thinks it's a stand-alone server. It doesn't "see"

the HP 373i gigabit Network Interface Cards (NICs)
anything else in the network
the proxy server/internet gateway
anything on the host's hard drive
The VM DOES see

a non-existent NIC (a generic Intel adapter)
the host machine' s CD-ROM
As an aside, I have the same problem with a PC
Host OS: XP SP2
Guest Virtual Machine OS: Ubuntu Linux 7.10
That VM doesn't "see" the NIC, and lives in its own dark cave.

In each case, the VMs see all the other hardware - except the NICs and hard drives not internal to the VM.

How do I get the VM to acknowledge the NICs so that I can install the NIC drivers and open the VM's eyes to the rest of the Domain?

A:Solved: server 2003 - virtual machine - NIC

That 'non-existent' NIC is a 'virtual' one running as a Device on the Virtual Machine.
I'm using Virtual PC 2003 but I think yours is similar.
Try setting the 1st virtual NIC to use each option in the drop-down list in the Settings window.
I think NAT will work but I'm not sure, I only have a small home network so am not familiar with your situation.

I am using a virtual IP to provide access to a mysql cluster. However since I don't have unlimited hardware I am unable to put the mysql servers as the sole application on each system. I end up with both an instance of apache and mysql on each system. I've configured the network with LVS and ldirector for load balancing. I've assigned a virtual IP to the system, say, I make that the primary IP to eth0 on the load balancer and as a loopback interface on the two machines (sql1 and sql2) running the mysql servers.

If I make a request from any server that is not sql1 or sql2, everything works fine, but when I am making a request from either of those machines it will not send to the load balancer, instead it picks up the loopback and just uses the local server.

Does anyone have any ideas for how to over come this? I'm kind of new to VIP's and anything more advanced than a static/dynamic ip address. I believe my setup is using direct routing.

My company bought out a company recently and now I have to manage a new server. The server is windows 2000 server that is getting fairly old now (not sure exact age of server). There are no more than 10 users accessing the server. It is running out of hard drive space and sometimes the tape backup drive acts up. This server does a bunch of different jobs. The server is running exchange server 2000, a blackberry server for a couple users, ms sql server (I think 2003?) for some accounting software and it is also a file server.

I was thinking of replacing it with a windows 2008 server but that would mean buying all new server software and office 2007 to connect to exchange 2007. Than I would need to migrate data to the new server. I have a some experience with migrating right now as I have setup a test lab to try things out using virtualbox.

So I have also been thinking about converting the windows 2000 server to a virtual machine and running vmware or other virtual machine software on a new server and using the image from the old server.

So my question is, would converting the server to a virtual machine and running it that way be a good idea? It would save a lot of money in software. Does any one have any pro's and con's to this type of idea or would getting a new server be the best option?

Thanks for all the help.

A:need advice if I should convert a server to a virtual machine

In my limited experience, virtualization is best for larger corporations that want to reduce the amount of hardware, energy consumption, and space requirements. A lot of the time, if you're a smaller company it would actually cost more in licensing costs to virtualize than to buy another server.

Hi... this question may or may not be related to another problem I have but it's something I've noticed and need to know about, concerning the paging file size.

I'm trying to solve a mysterious crashing problem on a pc. Whilst ripping a cd with WMP10 the pc just completely freezes and will only respond to a reset. It will crash like this every time a cd is ripped whether or not anything else is running...but I digress as that might be a seperate problem.

So.. question.. in a system with a 160gb hd split into two partitions of 100 and 60, with 512mb pc2700 ram how large should the page file be?
I know there is the option to let windows manage it but I do recall reading somewhere that the ideal size is 2.5 - 3 times the amount of ram in the system. The owner of the pc though has it set at the custom level of 3000mb...
Any thoughts please?

I'm going to start another thread in the relevant forum anyway, but does anybody have any opinion as to whether this setting might be affecting WMP in the way described above?

Thanks as always

A:Virtual Memory : Paging File size???

The virtual memory size won't be causing the problems you're experiencing. I would suggest trying a different program to rip CDs, CDex is very good http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/

If you want something a little more advanced, I recommend Exact Audio Copy, using the C2 error correction with my LG CD/RW I can rip at 45x with no errors (I then use CDex to encode the wave files to MP3) http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/

Hi Tony,

I have always found it best to just let the system manage it to let it adjust it as needed automatically. You can benefit by moving the page file to a separate hard drive though.

I had installed RHEL4 in RHEL4 in my VMWare Virtual disk.
But now due to some reason, it's not booting up.
How can I recover the data stored in the .vmdk file?
Thanks in advance,

A:How to recover files in VMWare virtual machine disk(.vmdk) file?

If you have another VM then you can add the non-booting vmdk file to it as another hard drive. At least that's the theory, in my experience what boots is the added vmdk file so you would actually want to add a good/bootable vmdk file to the non-booting VM.

Then boot it up and the files will be accessible.

So, to get started, you need to create another RHEL4 VM.

Hope that makes sense.

I've tried hosting a server for an indie computer game called Minecraft using the following .jar file
and while it works, I've been unable to allocate more than 1 gig of memory to the program.

Running the .jar file by itself leaves a very small amount of memory, which is tracked on the server window as "Memory use: # mb (% free)

The support forum for the game suggests using a .bat file with the following line:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe" -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar

This does increase the amount of memory, and while I should be able to increase the "1024" values to use even more, this is where I run into problems. Using "2048" or any other value in this .bat line produces an error stating:
"Unable to run virtual Java machine"

I've asked about this on the game's forum, and the only response I've gotten was from other Vista 64 bit users that have the same problem and are unable to solve it. Any thoughts?

Hey everyone. I have a test tomorrow and I've been reviewing everything. So far it's been easy except for what should be the simplest thing. I have one vmware running Windows Server 2003 with IIS hosting a web site, and I'm trying to connect to that site either locally or from a XP vmware, but neither are able to connect. I updated my Hosts file with the relevant host name and IP address and flushed my DNS cache but it still spits out errors both locally and on my XP vmware.

So, I go and install DNS on my W2K3 Server vmware and add the forward and reverse lookup zones and voila, it works with no other modifications.

What am I doing wrong here?

I'm trying to send an avi movie file to a friend of mine in Japan so she can watch it on her computer. I would have just burned the file onto a DVD as an MPEG, but her home player will not play R or RW DVD's. So to do this,I need to do two things. One, I need to shrink the 975 MB avi file down to below 700 MB's so I can fit it onto a CD. Second, I need to edit in subtitles.

I haven't had much luck with one piece of software I tried, CyberLink PowerDirector. It's a great program and I was able to load the subtitles, just fine. However when I went to click on "Produce or "Create Disk", everything crashed. I may not have had the right patch in it though, so I may try reinstalling it.

I also have Ulead MovieFactory Plus which will also edit in subtitles, however, this program appears to just be geared for burning onto DVD. No editing or shrinking then saving onto the hard drive.

I really think this can't be that hard to get completed. I think adding the subtitles is the hardest part, but I have already downloaded the srt file, so I just need a good install program first. Even nicer would be a program that installs the subtitle and then burns it onto a CD or allows me to save it to my hard drive as an avi file. I should mentioned, I've also tried some of the smaller third party subtitle utilities without much luck.

But then all of this messing around with the subtitles will not do any good unless I can shrink this thing to fit... Read more

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Windows 7's disk management is very basic in that it will only let you shrink a partition once, as you've just found out.

A far better bet is the Easeus Partition Wizard bootable CD: Partition Wizard : Use the Bootable CD

I am running Win 7. I can't open the file (VHDX) using W7. As I understand it,....It is a W8 app.  The file path is C:\Users\b\Desktop\SysternalsSuite .     I just did a re-install with format  4 days ago using Windows 7 SP1 64bit disk that I purchased about 2 years ago. I have never used VMware.  Is this not suspicious?

A:VHDX file in Systernal Suite folder.

I don't know if it is suspicious or  not, but download, install, update and run Malwarebytes - you can get it here :-
Once it is installed and updated you only need to run a 'Quick Scan' and it will scan your system for suspicious items. If it finds any, it will attempt to quarantine / delete them and may ask you to re-boot at this stage. If it does, do so, then run it again as a check. If it finds anything which it cannot itself deal with, then create a topic in the 'Virus, trojan and malware removal logs' section of BC and paste the Malwarebytes log into your post.

I have Vista Home Basic on a Acer Laptop #2480-2196 and a 80 gig Hard Drive. My C Drive has 5 gig left and D Drive 23 gig left, and 8 gig in EISA configuration. I would like to take some space from D and put it in C, but I heared if I do this thru Disc Management I will loose Data. How can I safely do this thru Vista Disc Manement? Also, could I use the 8 gigs in EISA?

A:Shrink, Increase Parition size

Theres no garentee you can.

You can use GParted, in a livecd setup.
GParted -- Live CD/USB/PXE/HD

You burn it to disk, and boot it. from there you can then do it... But again, THEREs NO GARRENTEE.

Why not not just rearrange your files

Your 8Gigs might be your recovery partion, so DON'T touch it.

I'm just wondering if there's a way to make the start menu smaller? I have practically nothing on the start menu aside from the Computer, Control Panel and Devices and Printers buttons. I don't want to use a 3rd party program like ClassicShell cause I'll lose the search bar, which i use a lot in the start menu. here's what my start menu looks like Wed25-Jan.png picture by cruzer_san - Photobucket any idea how to get rid of all that useless space?

Win 7
I've been using CRT monitor, not 'flat screen,'

This morning, for some reason the screen getting to shrink, both width and length even though 'resolution' is 1024 x 768. I love to have monitor- size from corner to corner.

How to make the screen from corner to corner that CRT monitor had prior to this happpened?

Thanks for your help in advance

A:CRT Monitor's Size, Width and Length Shrink

Depending on the brand and model of CRT monitor you have, there should be buttons on it that allow you to adjust the viewing space.

You REALLY need to upgrade to a flat-screen LCD monitor.

If you like using and want to stick with the 1024 X 768 resolution setting, you need to buy a non-wide screen LCD model.

Here is a list of 17" non-wide screen models:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...07617 600030156 600030610&IsNodeId=1&name=17"

As you can see, they're cheap, and they don't have that display issue that you get with a CRT monitor.

Can someone explain the difference between these 3 programs?

A:Remote desktop, Virtual Machine and Virtual Box

Hi Jason6161 Two of these words are closely related, while the other one isn't.Remote Desktop is often a reference to the "RDP" acronym, which means "Remote Desktop Protocol", a protocol used by Microsoft Windows systems to remotely connect to another Windows system (or even other OS now). There's a nice little article on Microsoft website about, I suggest you to give it a read. If there's something you don't understand in it, let me know and I'll explain it to you.Connect to another computer using Remote Desktop ConnectionA Virtual Machine is like the state name, a machine that doesn't exist physically, it only exists virtually inside a system. It's the emulation of a system inside another system. So you could for example have Windows 8.1 installed on your computer, but using a program, create a virtual machine running Windows XP in it. To put it simply, it's running an independant system (guest) inside a system (host). For more information, you can consult the Wikipedia article below.Virtual machineVirtualBox is a program developped and maintenant by Oracle that allows you to create virtual machines. It's what we call an "hypervisor". A program that allows you to create and manage virtual machines. For more information, you can consult their website and their Wikipedia article.VirtualBoxVirtualBox WikiSo to sum it up, you can use VirtualBox to create a virtual machine (or multiple VMs), and you use the "Remote Desktop" to connect remotely to another computer and access it. ... I've got a few machines on Virtual PC, copies of one base installed template, all running XP Pro.

I moved one of these virtual machines to another box, and now that virtual machine cannot talk to any other virtual machine on the original box, or the original host itself.

Any ideas why this is?

Here's a strange issue--at least I think it's strange. I have an old application that I've had since I had Win XP. I'm not sure but I think I had it even on Win 98. Even though it's an old app I was able to install and run in on Vista and Windows 7. I now have the pre-release Win 8 installed on VMware Player and I was wondering if it would run in Win 8. So I opened Win 8 and put in the CD, clicked on the setup.exe file and it installed--or so it seemed. It always installed a short cut on my desk top before. So I looked and didn't see it. It was supposed to have installed in a particular folder, but I couldn't find it. I then installed it again and chose to put a short cut on the desk top. But, it wasn't there. The bottom line is that even though I had Win 8 open in the guest, I discovered that it actually instaledl on Win 7--on the host machine even though I installed it while the guest machine was open. Has anyone seen anything like that before? I suppose it happened because it was such an old app.

A:App installed on host machine while in guest machine

When you put the cd into your drive, it fired the autoplay on your host machine and not within your Windows 8 VM. It installed on your Windows 7 host machine. If you had been in the VM, and launched the setup from within the VM, it would not have installed on your host machine. PERIOD.

Thank for help .

A:Virtual graphic on machine virtual .

In Virtualbox's main screen, select your XP machine (do not start it). Click settings. On the left side, click System. On the Motherboard tab, set Base Memory to 1024. On the Acceleration tab, be sure that both boxes are checked. You may need to enter your computer's BIOS and enable its virtualization features. On the left side, click Display. On the Video tab, be sure that Enable 3D acceleration and Enable 2d video acceleration are checked. Click OK to save the changes.Start the XP virtual machine and let it finish booting. Above XP you'll see a menu bar. Click Devices > Install Guest Additions and follow the prompts. You will not be able to install your ATI drivers. Virtualbox is emulating its own set of hardware for Windows XP to use. My instructions will tell Virtualbox to give XP enough resources to run your game.As for the game itself, if it is on a CD, click Devices > CD/DVD Devices and make sure that your CD drive is selected.

I am using Windows XP home edition.

I posted this in the wrong forum, a few days ago: and was advised to post it here,
with a new hjt log. They did say that I had more serious problems than just my host file needing to be restored. They also said that there didn't seem to be a firewall. How can I find out if I'm using Window's firewall?

Arovax Shield popped up a message: "Warning: Your Windows host file was hijacked. It is recommended to restore host file."

1. Now I can't use my anti-virus program, because it stalls (freezes) before it finishes.

2. I can't use Panda or any other on-line scanner, because it too freezes before it can

3. I can't shutdown my computer - not even cold boot! I have to completely unplug it!

4. I can't do a system restore, to a previous date. (I've tried several previous dates).

I have no idea how to restore the host file, and I have no idea how it was hijacked.

Here is my new HJT log: (I hope it will be of some help)

Hello everyone,

I am hoping someone may be able to help me with the following. I tried to use VMware's free "converter" software to convert my physical HP machine to a virtual machine. However, when trying to run the virtual machine, it says that the virtual machine has two processors & that it is limited to only using one processor, & therefore, will not start. The physical machine is a dual core processor, but I see no way to configure the virtual machine so that it only has one processor.

It seems to me the software should just configure itself to at least run, and from there a person can try to tweak the settings and be advised if there are limitations at that point, but that would make to much sense. Alternatively, they could provide an easy way to change the settings so you can at least get the thing to run, but again, that would make to much sense.

Anyway, if anyone can help me get the virtual machine clone running, please let me know.

Thanks for your advice. I've transferred my problem to "Malware Removal & Hijack This Logs", as you suggested.

How do I delete this thread??

A:"Your Windows host file was hijacked. It is recommended to restore host file."

Try deleting or renaming the Hosts file.
It will be recreated, so no harm to try.
It's at:
It's named "HOSTS- no extension.
You can open this file with Notepad of you're curious enough to see what it says.
