Lost my CDrom

Q: Lost my CDrom

My cdrom was working fine.. till one day I went to run a program that requires a cd. It asked me for the letter of the cdrom drive, which has always been d. It doesn't look like the cdrom is recognized anymore by the system. I rebooted a number of times but no luck. I can put a cd in and the light goes on but I don't think it is reading it. I have windows 95. Any suggestions?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I've read through quite a lot of posts and my problem seems quite common yet havent been totally identical to what I've experienced.

A few days ago my CDROM drive totally disappeared. I checked My Computer and it is not there. My drive can still be opened and light still flashes.

I went on to device manager and selected to show hidden devices and it straight away appeared. It came back in My Computer and I was thrilled, I ran a cd and it worked fine. Literally an hour later I put another cd in and it failed to run..the drive had disappeared again! I repeated what I had done last time but it did not come back. I have gone into BIOS mode, couldnt make much sense of it but from what I saw, there was no trace of my lost drive.

I started the computer in safe mode and still no trace and have also opened up casing..all wiring seems fine.

I ran several online virus checks and was told i had trojans which I have now (hopefully) deleted..but I am unsure whether this is connected to the issue of my CD ROM..I was unaware that Trojans could even do that.

My final point is that I checked my system history and it states there that the cd rom has been removed, added and then removed again..I also restored my system to a checkpoint in november when everything was fine..no change whatsoever.

Apologies for the long post..hope it makes sense to anyone who reads it. Any help is appreciated..even if it is simply confirmation of my feeling that the cdrom has simply died.

Trojans don't do anything, but open back doors for others who would do anything to the computer.

Install a free AV like antivir. Update it daily. Scan thoroughly once a week.

In BIOS, you should see your drive in the first sub menu. Could be a loose cable.

Connect the camera to your PC using the cable provided with your camera, should be USB. That camera has built-in memory. Once you connect it, turn on the camera. In My Computer, a removable hard disk should appear. Browse that disk and you should see your pictures.

Hey everyone
I'm kinda new to XP seeing that i'm a mac user only but my parents bought a PC with XP so i'm stuck using it sometimes, well my problem is all of a sudden i go to use the computer and the computer can';t find either of the CD ROMS, the DVD-RW or the CD-ROm, I went into device manager and it has the "!" beside both, so i reinstalled the drivers for both and got something to the effect of "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)", i've tried every trick i know but like i said i'm not good with windows, so any advice is much appricated, THe dvd-rw is an Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-104 and the other is ASUS CD-S400/A. Hi
I have a Writemaster TS-H552B DVD/CDROM drive
Yesterday it suddenly decided not to write or read any CDs but the DVD side is fine for reading and writing.

Looking in My Computer I used to have two drives showing for this but now only the DVD one on show.

Inserting a CD into this drive it is not recognised and will not become active.
I have tried disconnecting ,rebooting ,re connecting ,rebooting (found new hardware) but still missing the CD side

Welcome any solutions
The drive has not had any big use and no Games

Thanks

Here I go again, trying to help with someone elses pc problems
(like I know anything about them or how to fix them) sure glad you guys are always here

I will try to make this as simple as possible.

(System is a prepackaged deal came with windows 98)

My mom has broke or lost her cd rom. This happened a few months ago when she decided to uninstall Mcafee (She said there was a error message that kept coming up) But now she does not know what that error message was.

She inserted the macafee disk and tried to uninstall, but it said there were files? or somethings missing, and it could not finish uninstall.

She does not use her system much, and a few months went by, she decided to put in a cd and it would not work/play the cd.

She said she went to control panel and there is no cd rom anymore, and system does not detect it.

I wanted to tell her to put the system recovery disk in and let it find it but I forgot it will not play a disk.

This could be a case of the cd rom just broke (though I dought it) the system is only 1 1/2 yrs old and she uses it once a week maybe!

Anybody got any quick fix solutions or places to start looking?

Thanks in advance, You guys are always so helpful and always THERE!!!!

I had a different type of blue screen of death that i have never seen before on Win2k, and unfortunatly I didnt write down what it was because Im not use to not being able to figure this stuff out but now Im stuck. Basically the message was pointing to an issue with cdr4_2k.sys. Post on the net mentioned Roxio Cd software causing som eerrors with this but I don't and never have had it. I restarted in safe mode and uninstalled and reinstalled Divx codecs and still the error kept coming up when I tried to start in normal mode. So yet again, safe mode, renamed cdr4_2k.sys to cdr4_2k.old, reboot.... It worked! HOWEVER, No CDROM and None of my Virtual drives from Deamon tools tools will work, they dont even show up, all i see are my harddrives. I tried Uninstalling/reinstaling my CDROM, no luck. I even checked to see if things where physically fine, they were, although I think its software because of the virtualdrives being gone too. When I look at my virtuak and CDROM drives in 'System Manager' they have the '!' and the troubleshooting code shown to me is (Code 31). Yikes this hurts

Could use a little help. I am awaiting the return of a new cd-rw (RMA) and I have purchased not received a cdrom, bought via e-bay that is OEM. Current cdrom (0riginal) is toast, after three years.

I have found the Panasonic manual for their 48x ATA-66 atapi/ide 33, and await arrival of that piece before I locate it's drivers.

I have a usable HD, one gig, that I am limping along on. I am running a Gateway 500 PIII, with 128meg of ram.

Expect the OEM surplus cdrom to arrive late next week and am trying to be ready for it's arrival.

What else to I need to anticipate, and can someone give me some steps that would assist in getting the 500 to recognize the cdrom. I know since it is a OEM it won't be a Plug n Play.

Thanks

Bob

A:lost cdrom in the middle of new install of HD

all you should have to do is set the jumper to master or slave to match the cdrom you removed. Plug it into the same cable and windows should have no problem recognizing it.

I misplaced my CD ROM containing the software download for the HP SureStore.  Without this software, I'm unable to access my files that are being stored on my Pocket Media Drive.  Does someone know where to find the download for SureStore or if there's an alternative way to access my files? Right now, there's no way for me to access through My Computer. I see the device but when I double click, I get taken to a Properties window instead of opening the device. I've had a problem for a month or two and I can't seem to figure out what the problem is. Maybe someone can give me an idea where to look and what to do.

A few months ago I came home from work (I have two kids, on 17 and one 11 that use the computer when I'm not home), and I discovered that all of my Start Menu programs were gone. In addition, when I tried to look at a CDROM in either of my two CDROM drives, the window for the drive would flash and then disappear and I'd never get to the drive. I've removed the drivers for both CDROM's and let Windows find them again to re-install them. Once they were installed, I can see them under "My Computer" and the drivers indicate that the devices are working correctly. However, I still can't access the drives. I can't relate this to any software (as far as I know) that was installed around the same time period and I can't seem to find a restore point that would get me back to where I was before the problem started. I'm not sure if the two problems are related, but they did start at the same time.

I can find programs by typing the name in the "start search" field in the start menu. And, they will run once I've found them. I just can't add any icons to the Start Menu -> All Programs list (there's just nothing there but a lot of blank white space). There were quite a few there before they just disappeared.

Welcome to TSG!!

Was it like this from the repair shop? If so, return to them with a request for a fully functioning machine, as you were expecting one after paying them for their services.

If this came about since then, let us know. There are various things to try. (One might be to pop open the case and be sure the cable(s) didn't fall off in transport.) Can you see it in BIOS?

I recently received a hand-me-down pc with a CDRom/DVD which worked fine. It runs on Windows 2000 sp4. I installed a CDRom-RW from my older computer and since then have not been able to read cds. The computers registers that they exists, states that the correct drivers are installed but when I put in a cd rom and click on the icon, I get the message: "The disk in drive E: is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" Both drives, (E and F), give the same message with their respective drive letters no matter kind of CD in input.
The drives are installed master and slave correctly. Both drives will play music cds just fine.

I HAVE AN HP, ABOUT 2 YRS OLD AND WHEN I PUT IN A CD I TRY TO OPEN IT BUT AN ERROR COMES UP AND TELLS ME THAT IT CAN ACCESS THE CDROM AN D THE DRIVE IS NOT READY..HOW DO I FIX..THANX

A:Cdrom

The drive could need cleaning, it may have failed, or a cable may be loose or disconnected inside the case. Did you move the pc lately? It's obviously getting power since you can insert a cd, but that doesn't mean the drive hasn't failed.

First thing I would try is cleaning the CD. You can use a regular CD cleaner if you have one or can get one. If cleaning it several times doesn't help, open the case and check the cable connections to the drive and motherboard. If the connections are good, try finding another drive that you can try in your machine.

bios settings shouldn't cause the computer to lock as you describe, but who knows.

I would suspect the cable, either bad or connected backwards, the red stripe on cable must go to pin 1.

Also double check that the jumpers are not set the same as the other device, only one master and one slave per cable

Also whatever ide channel you are adding the drive to should be set to auto or cdrom in the bios.

After a factory restore and installing various programs, my cdrom has quit reading all media. I have removed upper filters and lower in registry. This happened once before and an overpriced tech fixed this problem over wifi.
He told me there were to many drives reporting and the system didn't know which was the correct driver. He of course did the removal of those drives behind the scenes so I could not follow what he did. Know it's happening again.

Question is how do I find and remove those drives so the system will recognize the drive?

Hi:

I've had experiences with a number of BTC CD_ROM drives of variable speeds. These relatively inexpensive drives manufactured by Behavior Tech Computer Corp. are not the world's most reliable. I've heard them squeek, sputter, gasp, wheeze, and groan on numerous occasions in quite a few systems that I've repaired. Your best bet is to junk that clunker and purchase either a new and different CD-ROM drive from another manufacturer or get yourself an up-to-date DVD or CD/RW drive made by a reputable company with a solid history of reliance. I'm not going to suggest a manufacturer, but if you do a little online investigation, you'll come up with your own choice. Good luck.
