Permissions, I am really struggling

Q: Permissions, I am really struggling

Background I have been using VS Revo Pro to uninstall a number of unwanted programs, and in the process noticed that saving of neither a registry backup nor a system restore point was happening.

I contacted VS Revo, and it was suggested that the problem could lay with the permissions settings. The picture taken of the relative properties seems to show that full permissions are granted. Am I perhaps wrong?

The advice about permissions in the Windows 7 system really confuses me, when it talks of objects in editing permissions too. I cannot grasp what the objects wold be in a case like mine, if indeed they are relevant.

I should. please, ask for as much help as I can get on this confusing matter.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently put a new hard drive in my HP dv7 laptop to increase the onboard storage. Before changing out the existing hard drive, I backed up all my personal files on an external hard drive.

One of the folders though for some reason appears to have "randomly" restricted the permissions of an entire folder along with its subfolders and individual files to the admin user of the previous Win7 installation.

This is a folder with multiple subfolders and files (photo backup folder). Windows will allow me to take control of the folder with the current admin user, but it's only one folder at a time. When I attempt to force new permissions for access down the folder structure, I get an error message telling me my access to the subfolders and files is denied.

Is there some other way to force these permissions down the tree or should I put the old hard drive back in and attempt to fix the problem from the old instance of Windows?

Any assistance is appreciated.

Does anyone have any idea why, when I select the Read/Write option for users and groups for various shares on my NAS, the Vista permissions don't have Delete selected, thus only making it possible to delete at administrator level?

When viewing permissions, even administrators can't view the contents of the Auditing tab, although currently any user (both Windows and UNIX) can take ownership of a file/folder, which, of course, I want to change, but I don't want to affect the settings on my NAS.

Where NAS files show a combination of Windows and UNIX users and groups, I'm also seeking advice on how best to configure.

I recently looked at my D drive, to find out that every file and folder in the D drive has a S-1-5-21.... account under the security tab. However the D drive itself does not. When I do to delete it, it tells me I cannot because it is inheriting permissions from its parent. But The D drive itself (The parent) doesn't have that user. So first, can you explain this.
So, I go and stop it from inheriting permission, and then delete it.. The issue is that this is quite time consuming. I basically want to remove this user on every file and folder on the drive at once. Now how do I do that?
I would be perfectly happy removing all the file permissions for all the files (Yes, I know that leaves them unaccessable) and then just adding them, as adding them to the D drive itself will cause all the child objects to inherit them, yes?

The fan on the Power Supply keeps going on and off. It spins for about 1 second then turns off then turns on. Sometimes the fan spins for more than 1 second and it makes a weird squeaky noise. I haven't cleaned my PC properly in months... I used a hair dryer to blow away the dust but problem is still occurring. Should I open up the PSU and clean it further... or is it time for a new PSU?

A:PSU fan struggling

A ahir dryer probably would not provide the appropriate air pressure to do a good job, I suggest trying to clean it with a can of compressed air. These can be picked up for about $3 at walmart, kMart, just about any store that sells electronics. Alswo a cleaning about every two weeks would be a better scheme. I take 5 computers out to my work shop at least every two weeks for a good dust removal. But then I have a small compressor with an air nozzle and turn the pressure down to about 20 PSI.

Hi, names Zero, new to the forums. but figured it would be a good place for me. anyways onto my problem.

I've been having this issue for about a week now. My audio cuts in and out while streaming on youtube. or other streaming sites, yet on my computer i can listen to music/vids for hours and it wont skip. within a 3 minute vid on youtube or such the audio will cut out for 1-4 seconds. every minute or so. And I know it doesnt have anything to do with my net speed. im on a 10 meg cable connection. and even with the video fully loaded it will do it. I'm no.. novice around computers. but this is one issue that I cant seem to solve on my own.

List of things tried.
Updating audio drivers.
Uninstalling audio drivers. reinstalling, trying without updating first, then reupdating
Updating adobe flash player.
Uninstalling/trying without adobe flash player (Shocked it let me play videos without adobe flash >.>)
Installing older version of adobe flash player.

Tried on both Firefox and Internet explorer. same results with the cutting of audio. so dont think its as simple as bad version of explorers. running latest version of FF. old version of IE. tried on a fresh install of google chrome.

My computer specs.
Windows Xp media edition Service pack 3
Nvidia geforce 9600 gt graphs card.

A:Struggling

Run the following and use Clean up button, does issue stop?

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ and save to your Desktop.
Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
Click on the Scan button.
AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
When it's done you'll see: Pending: Uncheck any elements you don't want removed.
Now click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
Look over the log especially under Files/Folders for any program you want to save.
If there's a program you want to save, just uncheck it from AdwCleaner.
If you're not sure, post the log for review.
If you're ready to clean it all up.....click the Clean button.
After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S0].txt) will open automatically.
Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder.
Items that are deleted are moved to the Quarantine Folder: C:\AdwCleaner\Quarantine
To restore an item that has been deleted (if necessary):
Go to Tools > Quarantine Manager > check what you want restored > now click on Restore.

I am not sure whether I chose the right forum for this topic, as it's not only one game but morelike all processes are affected. When I am playing any game with like, say, 90 fps, it certainly does not feel like 90 fps like it used to feel before the problem. It feels lots of less, choppy, slow and especially when I use mouse to turn and to look around. This same problem comes with not only this game, but other programs and games aswell. Just a simple task like watching a movie from my computer, usually when the camera moves, it feels like the pc is giving some kind of lag. I must say, I did re-install my windows when I noticed the problem but there was no significant change.... So I deduce it must be a hardware problem. I hope you understand something from my explanation

Oh. And I check the temperature on graphics card. It seems to be ok, around 60 degrees? So it could not be due to overheating I guess.

Could it be that the card is broken? May the monitor be faulty? If, how can I get this confirmed?

For the reference my specs are

Intel Core 2 DUO CPU E8500 @ 3.16 Ghz P5Q Deluxe
RAM 4 GB
ATI RADEON HD 4800-series
Windows 7 32-bit

I am very frustrated by the situation, and any help would be highly appreciated
I've once taken my pc for repair but they couldn't fix it.

Computer has latest virus definitions downloaded/installed, latest Windows updates installed, Ad-Aware updated, PC Powerwash updated and still the following problems occur regularly:

1. When going to the windows update site (as opposed to letting it download the files on its own and telling you when new updates are available) it closes the browser window upon clicking "Custom Install".

2. Popups kill the computer. There's this WinFixer that keeps coming up and literally 50 popups at a time occur and make themselves little groups on the windows taskbar.

Hello, and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Hi there,

Struggling to get Certificates to work on Win8 for https login to my NAS.
With https enabled on NAS I keep getting the Red https splash security page on both IE and Chrome.

Followed the instructions to generate/edit the Certificate from the NAS (produces new cert timestamp of Feb 2016).
Instructions in NAS docs say I should import this and allow the manager to automatically choose the appropriate certificate folder.
This I do and it puts the certificate into the "Intermediate Certification Authorities" folder by default.

Contacted the NAS company and they don't know why it won't work, as I have followed their documented instructions.

Any help appreciated.

What exact ram? What speed ddr3? Why only 8GB?

If you are gaming , 16GB minimum would be best.

What kind of games do you play? At what resolutions? What graphics settings do you play on now/want to play on?

A:XP struggling to boot

First off try going to Start -> Run -> msconfig
Then go to the Startup tab and start unchecking programs that you don't want starting when your PC does. Be sure you know what you're unchecking first though. The name and manufacturer can give some clues, or googling them will tell you what they are. Unchecking all of the unwanted/unnecessary programs should vastly improve your boot time.

For now, however, here's what's wrong: I bought a new 80G hard drive (Seagate), and after much cussing and wrangling, finally got XPPro to load. However, my system only recognizes a "C" drive; neither my cd/rom nor my cd burner are showing up as being in my system. I have no partitions (that I know of; I am a novice...ok, rank amateur). How do I get my computer to recognize the other drives? Thanks a million in advance.

For some reason If I try to view a image or use a editing software, it just wont let me, and says something along the lines of "You do not have permissions" . For example, I cant open Kingsoft writer (Basically microsoft word) and in the permissions, the adminstator (ME) has all the allow boxes ticked, buts its all grayed out! How do i make it so its not grayed out, meaning I can open it. The picture is attached in this page!

Hello,

I've tried to cope with it alone, reading the pieces of advise given to other victims, but with no effects. So, please...

Main points I could notice:
- Hosts: 1159680172 auto.search.msn.com
- C:\WINNT\stsheets.dat

The antivirus programs (TrendMicro included) don't state any virus neither malware. The Lavasoft Ad-Aware also can't see anything wrong.
I tried to delete the malware in save mode (maybe this is called differently - I'm running polish version of Win2000) and clean the register. But then the computer during normal start reloads a few times and finally everything is back again.

And here is the contents of result.txt after having analyzed HiJackThis.log by KRC HijackThis Analyzer: (SMBFBE.EXE is the OfficeScan watchdog and ToDo.txt is my notepad file opened during system start)

This one is tricky. We are after a .sys file useally located in the drivers folder that holds this hijack in place. Once located...we can delete it...then the hijackthis entrys..and it should stick. Until you deal with that file..the hijacker will put it's entrys back. We are going to try 2 tools.

Please download Atribune's Find batch from here:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/find.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and run Find.bat. This should create a file in the
same folder called report.txt. Please post the entire text of this file
here for me.

Please empty any Quarantine folder in your antivirus, empty your recycle bin and purge/delete all recovery items in the spybot program if you use it?before running this tool.

Download this virus checker and tool from eScan Mwav.exe (Use Link 3)

1. Save it to a folder.
2. Reboot into safe mode
3. Double click the Mwav.exe file.(This is a stand alone tool and NOT just a virus checker......so it won't install anything)
4. Select all local drives, scan all files, press SCAN and when it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
5. In the Virus Log Information Pane (Bottom Window)
Left click and Highlight all the info in the Lower pane--- Use "CTRL C" on your Keyboard to copy all found in the lower pane and save it to a notepad file. DO NOT post the log from the ?View Log? button as that log does NOT contain the info we are after.

Struggling here how do you backup windows 10? With Acronis 2014 or 2015 or 2016. Do I have to select Winre unnamed partition windows c drive and recovery drive D. Or do I just pic C: Drive and D: drive/recovery drive? Thank you in advance. What is the easiest version to use to backup with Acronis. Things have changed so much from Windows 7!

A:Struggling here how do you backup windows 10?

Hi, good that you are aware of and use disk imaging. Windows is fragile and easily offended. Personally I wouldn't use Acronis TI and haven't for years after it failed to find my SATA drives completely. It's a bloated cumbersome product. Also, some have reported problems with the VSS service.

I use Aomei Backupper (free is fine); straightforward, regularly updated.
Many here recommend Macrium reflect (free) - a mature and modern product.
Both offer differential and incremental imaging.

You need the boot disk for whichever solution you choose, and need to make sure your PC is configured to boot from it.
You also need external storage for your backup- I suggest an absolute minimum of double the amount you intend to back up.

Helllo, and Thanks in advance for taking a look.

PC: Asus T2-P 3.0 ghz with 1 gig ram. Integrated Intel video. 400 Gig HDD w/two equal partitions (C:/D XP Pro with all latest security/MS Updates.
Running two resident anti Virus Programs: Avast Professional, and Avira Personal Free. Also run RemoveIT pro Enterprise as a stand alone (works great) Also run A-Squared Free, MS Malicious SW Remover, AVG Anti-Root Kit, and Win ASO v2.0.5 Trial (which works great) and CCleaner. Also run Internet Properties regulary to complete delete IE temp Internet files.

Did have a serious virus that took some work to get out of my machine, but I'm afraid it left something behind, and am at my wits end to find it / clean it. Want to have the HJT log looked at, and maybe the answer here is to re-install windows XP. I dunno... just gettting unbeleivable slowness, with the Performance indicator in Task manager generally spiked at 88% to 100% most of the time.

Wondering if it is worth trying to fix issue, or just re-install (and which method is best?)

Any help GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Hi there,

In the last month my current laptop has pretty much died on me. I can only use it for a short period without it switching off due to overheating, and the power cable is so loose that if I move much then it loses connection and also goes dead. So I'm looking to replace it as soon as possible. My budget isn't particularly big, around 700/750 (I'm from the UK, so pounds!), and I could really do with some help in finding something suitable.

I only do fairly ordinary sort of things - surfing, office stuff, watching videos, a bit of light gaming, some web design, and listening to music. However, due to illness I'm currently housebound, so my laptop is even more crucial than ever as it keeps me connected to the outside world and provides a huge amount of my entertainment. So I really want to get it right!

One of my main concerns was wanting something that was going to last. I hate the thought of having to buy another laptop in a couple of years time, so was hoping I could get something that would still be decent and working in.. well, more than 2 years time. I'd also like it to be quick! My current laptop is so slow now, so speed is important. I'm not really concerned about how it looks, portability and battery life though. As long as it can sit on my lap without being too heavy I'm not fussed. Oh, and not overheat!

So I've been doing as much research as I can but for the life of me am unable to find something that fits my cr... Read more

A:Struggling to Find a New Laptop

You are not the only one finding such decisions hard. I have a second hand Sony laptop which I repaired and have fitted with an SSD drive. It's really fast compared with a standard laptop but I was horrified by how difficult it was to take the laptop apart even for cleaning. In general, laptop design has been awful and buying something at great expense which then conks out after maybe two years makes buyers wary of purchasing a replacement.

When the next iPad launches around October I will probably be buying one. A computer is useful for plenty of tasks though so owning both seems justifiable. Perhaps you could go for a basic laptop and budget to install an SSD drive. A touch screen laptop will cost silly money but SSD's are not that dear for say 240/250Gb storage. Forget fast processors which are likely to run hot. It would be useful but probably hard to find out how easy it is to disassemble a particular laptop to reach the parts that accumulate dust and dirt. I don't know much about laptops but I have a Dell which seems very sensibly designed.

I repaired my son's Sony laptop over a year ago but in the meantime he bought an iPad. Although the laptop is now working fine he uses the iPad for practically everything.

Ok here is the situation.

I noticed yesterday on my WD Green drive some data was slow to read e.g. excessive time to start playing video file, and at same time was read errors logged in SMART so decided to order 2 new drives and move the data.

Today I got the drives, swapped some cables round as one of my red's I realised was on the asmedia controller and I want all my red's on the intel controller, and installed the 2 new WD red drives.

For reference here is the setup

Intel controller

Samsung 850 pro ssd - system drive
WD Black 640 gig
2 Existing WD red 3TB
2 New WD red 3TB

Asmedia controller
WD green 2TB
DVDRW

Out of case temporarily due to lack of SATA ports
Samsung 750gig

Now today something unexpected happens, I am sorting out the data that will be going to the new redundant setup and suddenly I notice when trying to play a video stored on the hdd the hdd light is on all the time and the video isnt loading, task manager reports a constant high speed been read (in this case 140megabyte/sec). Explorer gets the not responding status, and killing it stops the i/o. I repeat and same file again same issue. I deleted the file. After checking over some other files same problem again on another file, I discovered tho after leaving it 20 minutes the video did actually start playing. Now some more weirdness, it seems I only have to highlight the file in explorer for the everlasting i/o, I dont even need to try and load the file, so selecting a bad file is enough for a ... I have a URL, I've figured out how to make links display in my sheet, now I'm trying to figure out how to take 4-5 numbers out of a giant url. I'm having extreme difficulty doing this. After I extract these numbers I'm planning on inserting it into another macro to make everything automated, right now we have a dialog box macro where it goes 1 by 1 and asks for these numbers and we are manually pulling them out of the url which is time consuming when you have a 500 product project.

I've learned it before I'm sure but its not coming to mind right now. anyways Help is greatly appreciated, I've pretty much got a sheet with about 300 links in A and I have to extract those five numbers!

Hi, not sure where to post this so I'll start here.
My computer has recently started slowing almost to a crawl for no understandable reason. For example just not all I had open were IE with about 5 tabs, MS Word and streaming internet radio through VLC (plus the usual MSN which I wasn't talking on, virus checker etc.)

While the computer won't let me do any work in Word or IE, the radio is still playing.

I have run spybot, adaware and AVG spyware as well as virus checker, and after a few initial tracking cookies, have found nothing to suggest malware.

My system: 3GHz x2 AMD Athlon, 2 GB RAM, 512 MB 8600 GT graphics card, Asus M2N-E SLI Mobo, vista business x64.

Are there any diags you could suggest to find a solution to this - very hard to work when the computer stops working!

Cheers,
CB

Hi all, first post here!

I have recently bought a new quad PC and installed Vista Ultimate x64 on it. It installed fine, I activated it and started to get the updates through, after a few hours they were all installed successfully.

However, last night the Vista SP1 update appeared and I am a bit stuck! It says it is downloading but just stays on 0% for HOURS! Then, all of a sudden last night it climbled to 94%, stopped and I got an error from Windows saying the update has stopped working. I ran it again over night and got up this morning and it looked like it had finally downloaded as it was in the install process, asking me to press Next etc. I left it running but when I returned it said it had failed.

Now when I try to run it again, it seems to be stuck on 0% again. I have tried turning the firewall off but nothing happens.

Any ideas? Can it be downloaded manually and installed from somewhere else? Has anyone else had this problem?

Cheers
Tim

I've recently realised that I don't get the 'Run as Admin' option on any program that I right click on.
All I get is 'Run as ...', which when clicked on, opens a Run As box into which I type Administrator ......................... but that does nothing.
I've also discovered that I can't do a 'system restore'.
I opened up a thread in your Windows XP forum (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/596139/i-cant-run-as-admin-or-do-a-system-restore/) and have now been advised by LOUIS, one of your mods, to start a new thread here.
The reason being that, apart from my initial two problems, I am currently unable to download programmes from the web.
I was having issues with Avast, recently installed as advised, interfering with my emails. I then uninstalled Avast, only to find I couldn't install anything else due to my downloading problems.
I've just installed an AV prog after downloading it from a laptop onto a flash drive and then putting it onto this PC.
When trying to download a prog, a box appears asking me whether I'd like to save the file or cancel. As soon as I click on 'save file' the programme box disappears!
I'm sorry to be a pain, but my problems are increasing at an alarming rate!
Oh, I also get random reboots ....................... and I mean random! None for weeks, then four in one evening!
Please help me if you can.

Thanks in advance,

Slime58.

A:I seem to have multiple problems. I'm struggling now!

Hi all.
I've recently realised that my printer is now only printing intermittently, in fact, very rarely and I keep getting notifications of heur/qvm40.1.malware.gen.
My AV programme constantly removes it, but it keeps coming back!
Please, please, please ...................... somebody help me!
Many thanks,

Slime58.

Part of our strategy to do the right thing for our teenage offspring is to try and limit the amount of time they spend glued to the computer screen playing online games etc. We've tried parental management functions in our router to put time limits on IP leases but it turns out our isp has disabled those functions in the router. So I've tried setting up user accounts with password access. Waste of time because a 2 second search of Google finds 15 ways to circumvent account passwords. I know there must be a way to lock it down so the devious little blighters can't discover the passwords. I also want to know how to block access to a certain IP address so they can't log in to the router and find or change the Wi-Fi password. Can somebody give me some pointers at all?
Thanks in advance
Pete

Hi,

A couple of days ago I suddenly found my AV disabled and my web traffic being redirected, following some playing around I managed to install Symantec End Point protection, which Ran, said I had sirefef and all seemed well. But I still had odd options for Windows Defender & MEP Etc.

I found a guide on here by Gringo which I followed, which seemed to do the Job.

But now I am left with one final problem

Windows update refuses to install KB2813170 & KB2676562 From April and May Respectively.

I think I have missed a step out or not ran a particular tool. I am wondering have I missed something.

Look forward to your help

Thanks

Lee

Nothing personal but I hate Windows 8. I'm seriously struggling just to do the basics on my pc with it and WHY do I have no games? Where is my Mahjongg and Spider Solitaire? Why did my internet explorer icon disappear into thin air after a few days and I can't find it now??????

This is driving me MAD!!!!

Thanks.

A:Grrrrr - struggling just to do the basics on my pc

Hello Shug, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You can get free games from the Games app or Store on your Start screen. You'll have to be signed in with a Microsoft account to be able to though.

Do you mean the Internet Explorer tile on your Start screen? If not, then where?

Hi all, Just bought my new Acer E5-737G-525G, it's ani5-6200u core, with 8gb of ram, and a 940M card, a tidy piece of kit that shouldn't in theory be subject to any system lag or slowdowns. However, this is the SECOND laptop i recieved after the other one went back due to sluggish initial performance and me assuming that this was due to a drive issue. However, it seems like this one is having the same sort of issues. Consistent spiking for long periods to 100% HDD utilization and it takes an age to start up and the icons "page" in after you've started Windows. Can't say im super satisfied with the performance. I am not sure what i should do, if this is a reach out to Acer affair or just fix it myself.  Both RAM and CPU are hardly being maxed if at all, whilst the drive is usually at 100%ish and i can see visible lag on my performance as a result. Please help! I dont wanna have to buy an SSD quite yet lol

A:Brand New E5 Struggling with 100% HDD Utilization

Check in task manager in the "Disk" column. What is causing the 100% disk usage? is it windows defender? If it is, then get rid of it - Turn it off. If its MacAfee, GET RID OF THAT ABSOLUTE PEICE OF JUNK I believe your laptop has a Western Digital WD10JPVX Hard drive, just like my laptop had. Oh, waht a horror McAfee was to that poor hard drive.
