Copy the impossible?

Q: Copy the impossible?

I've been trying out various clipboard replacements/boosters, but so far have not been able to find something that will let me copy from various dialogs and program windows. Is there a "Universal" copy tool that will let me copy from Event logs, command windows, and program interfaces to paste elsewhere? Free or commercial-I'm interested.

Preferred Solution: Copy the impossible?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,

I have a few PST files in a folder on my C drive. I cannot copy or move my files on a D drive or an external hard disk.

I tried to use several user accounts which are all of them members of Admin group but unfortunately special permissions are still required.

By reading a few posts on this site, I used takeown -f and icalcs.exe c:\ /grant Administrator:F commands with no success. (The commands are processed successfully).

I booted under Linux and tried to move the files with no success again.

What's wrong?

i don't know what could do now?

Thanks for your help,

It feels like I've been creating scripts to automate lengthy processes for
a thousand years, but I've never had a problem like this before.

Here are the basic facts:

1. Script moves, copies, or deletes files referencing USB flash drives.
2. Files are not present on USB drives, they simply control a menu
that allows easy access to the flash drives.
3. Recently, I added four new files to a list of several hundred.
4. The four new files will not copy in the script. HOWEVER, they copy
normally using the manual copy and paste commands.
5. Finally, if I drastically shorten the names of these stuck files the
problem goes away!

A typical filename might be "(H) Eject PicoMini_4GB.lnk." (This shortcut
triggers a macro embedded in the script.) If I shorten the filename to
something meaningless like "AB" it copies normally.

If the manual copy and paste commands failed, I would have some idea
how to resolve this problem. Since copy and paste work fine, I really
don't know what to do.

A:Impossible File Copy Problem

I don't know if it's relevant, but the entire location string length comes into play, not just the file name.

For example: C:/folder/folder/folder/folder/file.txt

I just purchased a pre-owned Lenovo T420 laptop with Windows 7, but amazingly, over these many years, I've never had to back up my OS before because someone (my tech guy mostly) had always done it for me. Anyhow, while I do intend to make a full system backup copy, which I have no doubt will include the Windows 7 OS, I would also like to create a backup (disk) copy of my OS only since no install disks came with the computer. I can load the Windows 7 OS onto an 80Mb CD, but the entire hard disk backup will take many gigabytes and I intend to use a 32 Gb flash drive for that purpose.

My first and essential question is, can I create a Windows 7 Pro "restore" disk by just copying and pasting the entire "Windows" file on my hard drive to a CD or Flash drive...or is there more to it than that?

When I started to create a backup copy of the entire disk using the Windows backup program, I took particular notice to the
fact that (after I selected the custom selection option rather than the automatic selection for which files to copy) that the Windows file was no longer listed on the "C" drive menu provided in the backup program. It is certainly listed on my "C" drive when I bring it up directly, so can anyone explain to me quickly what that's all about?

I found that the Windows 'Copy' cmd was unreliable when copying bulk data of mostly folders of multimedia files between external USB HDDs, and from internal HDD to external HDDs.
As the data was massive, it is impractical to manually check that each of thousands of files is copied without error.  I since found a number of posts confirming Windows 'Copy' is quite primitive and obviously does not use any kind of verification that the copied files are an exact copy of the original.
I seek a modern easy to use GUI equivalent of the old DOS 'xcopy' cmd line copy-with-verification utility that Microsoft included to rectify the deficiencies of 'Copy' in the era before Windows, but has since chosen to ignore.   100% bit-for-bit Verification should be the most important feature, not speed.  As they say, more haste, less speed.  It needs to have at least some form of basic logging of result, preferably with choice of summary or verbose logging. Although the prime use is for when one does the original copy (files, folders, drives), for filesets already copied, it would be helpful if it could also do a Verification only pass comparing 2 filesets.    If poss, pls recommend a few, in preference order so I have a choice.

I have one internal drive with 1 TB.
The data there is very important to me , so I bought External removable drive for backup.
Now, I want to copy the data from one drive to the second drive but I have to be sure I have a perfect copy of the data.
The data is mostly songs movies and documents.
I'm using windows 7.

My question is this:

1.If I'll transfer the data through windows 7 by copy and paste, I could be sure i have a perfect copy?
2.There are tools for comparison Between the original data to the data that was copied?
If so, what are they?

If I do not in the right place please Please pass my message to the right place.thanks.

A:transfer data through windows 7 by copy and paste perfect copy?

There is no reason why using copy and paste won't give you a perfect copy and in my view it's more reliable than using the Windows backup utility.

One program I've found invaluable is Microsoft's SyncToy, which you can download here: Download: SyncToy 2.1 - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

It will sync files between folders of the same name on two separate drives or partitions ( I always use the Echo procedure).

You might also want to consider using Windows 7's Robocopy function.

I am getting win7 Ultimate (it should be in the mail right now), I install the win7 evaluation copy with a build I did back in the summer & installed win7 evaluation copy with a clean install. Now I want to do another clean install to get rid of the junk I have collected over the last couple months & because the copy will expire in a couple months. So my question is what is the best way to remove the evaluation copy & install the retail copy without losing all of my programs, drivers & user settings. I was thinking clone the area I want to save & then after the install happens merge the two back. Anyone have a better way or will the above work

A:win7 evaluation copy to a retail copy install

You can't clone and merge the two OS's. If you clean install by booting the new DVD to do a Custom install with Drive Tool formatting, you must reinstall your programs.

Many have reported excellent results doing an in-place Upgrade from the RC to any version using this workaround: Upgrade the Windows 7 RC to any retail version Icrontic Tech

You could try this to see if performance suits you, and if not then do a clean install.

My 89 yr old mother-in-law bought a desktop from an estate sale. Said she was told it had a 'pirated' copy of XP on it. Called me to find out what that was. She only wanted the computer to do e-mail and FaceBook with the grandkids and great-grandkids. Said she only paid $20 and wanted to know if I could "fix" it. Now, I do have a legal copy of XP that was on a computer that has long since bit the dust. The XP program was an upgrade from ME. I would like to help her and wonder if I could take my upgrade legal CD of XP and just put it in the machine and copy over the 'pirated' copy?

I probably jumped the gun a bit, thinking the Windows 7 Enterprise OS that was on my new/used computer was "mine to keep". I went ahead an installed several programs including iTunes and about 8,000 songs.

Turns out the seller had only put a 'copy' of his corporate Win7 on (I guess to show me that the computer worked).....and it's going to expire in about 10 more days without the activation code.

Will all my stuff be erased if/when I install a newly purchased copy of ANY version of 7?

Thanks for feedback.

A:Can I install a new, legal copy of Seven over my 'evaluation' copy...

With a fresh format - yes.

Otherwise a non-format install should create a windows.old installation with all data intact - but your apps will not function correctly.

You're better off backing up your data / user folders etc and doing a fresh format installation.

Is there any software to avoid 1:1 CD Copy?

I mean, I create a game software which run by play CD.
And to protect that CD from copying by 1:1 CD Copy. Also I need to protect that CD From running through VIRTUAL CD ROM Drives.

Is there any Technology/Software to do this?

A:CD2CD Copy Protection (Avoiding 1:1 Copy)

Yes, but most of us hate it by virtue of the DMCA saying we can't work around it, and the fact that we can't make backups of the things we buy. Personally, I'd be a good natured developer and avoid such things like the plague. All of them can be circumvented if you try hard enough anyway, and so all you'd really be doiing is making it hard to copy for most people but no harder for the seasoned eyepatched pegleggers.

You're basically looking at cd copy protection software such as starwind etc. I don't know if any such software is available to end users though.

Okay brand new HP Pavilion DV6t-7000, it has 7 home premium on it from the factory which i dont mind but i have a few copies of 7 pro, i am about to go into my junior year of college as a Information Systems Major, ive worked some on an IT helpdesk as well this is just a little background to say im not completly computer illiterate one reason id like to run pro is that many companies are currently running it and since im in the business school i just would like to be used to it! However id like to keep the premium version on the laptop to have for whatever i choose mainly to upgrade it to windows 8 (15 bucks when buying new laptop) when it comes out to play around with!

I have a 750gb hard drive which after HP messes with it its considerably less but on the partition that is my main it has somewhere around 640 id like to leave maybe 100gb or so on that copy just for when i get 8 so i have plenty of space if i decided to go to 8 full time at some point! but like ive read hp has 4 sections and thats the limit, how is my best way to go about this guys?

Thanks so much!

A:New HP laptop, want to add a copy of 7 pro while keeping stock copy?

When you are in the installation, just choose the upgrade option.

Upgrade Install with Windows 7

Apologize I read that wrong.

I do believe you can go into the disk management and create a new partition. Then format with NTFS. And install the windows 7 on there.

Hey guys it's me again with my annoying and those that seem to be impossible-to-fix-problems.

Well 3 months ago i bought an AMD 5600+ Dual Core and i had lots of problems since then, believing it was defective, i wrote to AMD support and requested an RMA. My replacement arrived today. It fixed LOTS of random crashes and my computer was able to boot up properly with both rams placed on in dual channel. I went to play on Soulstorm, it crashed, sometimes half way through a game or sometimes about 5 minutes into the game. I went on another game which is Company of Heroes, it crashed too.

The only reason i tested these 2 games was because they crashed most of the times when i had the defective processor.I thought it was the RAM but i thought it wouldn't make any sense because while waiting for my replacement to arrive, i put in my old AMD Athlon 3500+ and it worked fine with EVERY SINGLE games so it couldn't be the RAM and it can't be the replacement either. Not knowing what else to do, i took one stick of ram out, and guess what? It worked like a charm ! I really have no idea what's going on inside but if anyone had been through this or anyone who knows how to fix please help and....ermm if it works you'll be able to rest assured that a person on earth is grateful and just wants to kill you with hugs XD

Sounds like you may have an OEM System Builder versions of Windows 8. It is intended to be installed by someone or a company building a new computer that is to be resold. That particular version includes a personal use license which allows anyone to buy an OEM System Builder copy of the software and install it on a (new or old) PC that is intended for personal use. It should have come with an installation key.

I have attempted to take ownership of the drive and the files, but I can not get rid of it. When I first noticed it, it was random letters. When I tried to delete the file it turned into many many "Z's". When I ran the DOS delete protocol it changed into 6 "Z's"; with in that folder is a empty folder called "Update". Since then I have not been able to do anything about it. I don't know what to do. I even downloaded a program called Delete on Boot, and still no success. I have been coming here for about a year when I caught the Rogue Internet Security 2010. Hello, i have changed my old HDD to a SSD(Kingston hyperX fury 240GB, controller SandForce® SF-2281). I have tried to install windows 7, windows 10 and debian but i have always the same problem, when the install reboot to finish it, it impossible to boot from the SSD. My opinion is the controller is incompatible with my pc(HP pavilion dv6-7045ez). I have found crucial.com which say all ssd compatible with dv6-7XXX series(http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP-Compaq/pavilion-dv6-7xxx-series-%28intel-ddr...). Can i trust it? Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english, it's not my native langage.

This is going to be a long post. I'll start from the beginning.

Windows 7 (64 bit premium) came to my door today. I put it in my disc, logged on to my windows xp account. A pop up came up saying, "close any programs still on xp". So i googled how to do that, and it said to wipe my fdisk. I opened the console and did so, but that it didn't know if it was an external or internal command. So i googled another way to do it, and it get compmgmt.msc as a command to enter into my start>run thingy. I do that, and i go to disk management. Then i went to format, and hit the start button (not on the bottom of the screen, the little pop up window from format). Then it tells me i need to go to safe mode. I did, and went to the command prompt safe mode. I typed in fdisk, but got the same message as before. I hit restart, and went into regular safe mode. The other places i read about said to do it in administrator. The administrator had never been there before, and had just popped up. I hit enter on the password to see if it would go, but it wouldnt. so i hit restart, but this time windows 7 started up instead. Then i got stuck and froze my computer, so i restarted again. Then this message popped up before i get to the loading screen:

windows could not start becasue the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system\hal.dll.
please reinstall the above file.
now i've lost the windows xp disk, and many other websites have told me to just :re... Read more

A:impossible to get from windows xp to 7

You can't start setup from Windows. And you can't format the drive from which you are running Windows, any more than you can dig a hole in the ground you are standing on. You need to boot from the DVD and then remove the partitions when you have the option. After that, just follow the prompts.

There is no "fdisk" in Windows since around 10 years ago and it shouldn't be used on modern systems. Partitioning and formatting are part of setup. There are no messages from Windows 7 setup that mention fdisk, ever.

Hello there,
I am new here, and basicly new to learning how to fix my pc on my own. Yesterday I ended up reformatting my pc, due to some issues. The reformat went flawless, however i noobishly forgot a few things... saving all my hardwear. Anyways, I have since fixed it kinda. Had a freind help me so far but now lost on what is going on. Had to reinstall my network driver to get as far as we did, we have connection! The issue is that the internet doesnt connect still. Both connections say enabled and when you go into repair tells me:
the following steps of the repair operation failed: renewing the IP address
we have tried to go into command prompt and put in commands for release and renewal and still not working.. any suggestions ??

ps please remeber im new to this and doing it alone now. My friend has since left for his own life (hehe) might have to talk slowly on explinations for this one..

Yesterday my pc suddenly gave some strange errors after startup after that it suddenly became impossible to run exe files. I found out that the only way i could startup firefox was using a html site wich was still on my deskop. After trying "WinXP_EXE_Fix.reg" I was able to run some programs but most of them still gave a error that windows didn't reconise the file type. After rebooting my pc (after the Winxp_exe_Fix ) I was finally able to startup Hijackthis and let it scan my pc.The thing I don't get is if my pc doesn't reconise exe files anymore, why does it reconise explorer.EXE also al my shortcuts on my deskop turned to LNK files wich I can't open. I don't know much about pc's so I didn't want to mess with regedit.exe (except with the .reg file) also after 3 times of rebooting and starting the .reg file some programs got their origional icon back but still didn't work. (also i can't load my viruscanner wich is Norman). Is there anyway I can fix this without reinstalling xp?my Hijackthislog:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 14:17:39, on 29-8-2008Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16705)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC: ... Hello boys and girls. About one year ago, my 500GB Western Digital MyBook hard drive died when I unplugged it from my motherboard. It lived a long life. It was time for it to die. I figured maybe a power surge killed it since I didn't "Safely remove the hardware". The computer it died on was built by myself. It was an Asus motherboard and a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit OS. I was convinced that my data was lost, so I bought a 500GB Toshiba Canvio portable USB drive in the color black. I plugged it into a rear USB 2.0 port. It was recognized for about three seconds, and then Windows displayed a yellow popup from the bottom right corner of the taskbar saying "The device has malfunctioned". A new hard drive? Come on. I brought it downstairs to my dads Vista machine, and it worked just fine. I scratched my head, and for kicks, I tried my "dead" MyBook on the same machine. It worked! I could see all my data!

After this, I figured it was a bad motherboard. Since none of the ports on the computer were working with it. (Mind you, mice, flashdrives, printers, keyboards, hubs, etc. were all functioning fine on the system). It was ONLY mass storage USB devices that were not working. I waited about a year and built a new computer. New EVERYTHING. Windows 7 OS, Asus motherboard, and all that good stuff. I was so excited to finally be able to use my USB hard drive again. I missed my data. But... It didn't work. It makes the usb "Bee-boop" but will no... Read more

I have a Speedtouch Modem and a Belkin Wireless Router. I get an average speed, although it has dropped lately.

I bought a Belkin 'N' Wireless Router+Modem. It would not make a connection to my ISP.
I have spent HOURS [Literally] on the phone with Belkin Techs and my ISP.
Changed settings - patched etc etc etc.
Belikin replaced the Router+Modem with an N+. SAME RESULT AS ABOVE.

A retailer lent me a NetGear G Router+Modem - SAME RESULT AS ABOVE.

Today a telephone engineer came and checked my line for faults. FINE. A1.

Now, my Speedtouch with Router WORKS.

So...EVERYONE says it's impossible that the others DO NOT work.

I'm told that if you simply plug a modem into any phone point with ASDL- you will get an ASDL light. I don't with the new stuff.

My friend does.

What I'm experiencing is impossible - but is it ?

The men in white coats will soon be here. Help.

A:Impossible - but true.

I cannot boot in either safe or normal mode. When attempting to boot in safe mode, the drivers will load, I wait, the screen goes black & I get the words "safe Mode" in all 4 corners, the cursor moves, but nothing else. Sometimes I simply get a blue screen with a moveable curor. When running a diagnostic I get "boot manager is corrupt or missing". I cannot run system restore. I have the Vista 64 recovery disks from HP , but the computer will not boot from them (the choice to boot from the cd never appears); however, the computer will run the Vista 64 recovery disk I got from the internet, but it cannot find an operating system to repair. I have one 200gb hard drive, however when I run chkdsk, it calls the drive X & says there is only 3 gb there. One more thing, while booting I noticed the opportunity to go into the raid utility by pushing crtl N. I never put raid on my computer & there is no evidence of it in the boot consol. The computer is an HP Pavilion with an AMD Quad core processor runing windows 64, 6gb of ram, 200 gb hard drive. Of course I do not want to do a clean install of windows because I have a great deal on my HD I do not want to loose. Thank you in advance for your help!!
