Screen/Resolution Issues When Turning Screen On/Off

Q: Screen/Resolution Issues When Turning Screen On/Off

Hello everyone! Iv'e been having an issue that's driving me crazy and i'm hoping someone here can help.

The issue i'm having is when my computer goes into sleep/hibernate mode and i wake it up, the screen appears to have a resolution issue ( picture attached ). I figured this wasn't a big deal so i turned sleep/hibernate mode off and just turn my screen off when not in use. I'm getting the exact issue though! When i turn my screen off and back on, the resolution is messed up.
So now i need help resolving this. If it also fixes it for the sleep/hibernate mode, that would be great but not necessary
The ONLY recent change is I upgraded to an Asus GTX560 Ti DirectCU II Top OC graphics card. I installed the card into my computer and windows automatically downloaded the drivers for it.

Things i've tried:
1)Uninstalled and reinstalled graphics drivers using windows update and then again through Nvidia website
2) Currently using HDMI, but get the same issue with DVI-D (single) cord
3) Completely reinstalled Windows 10 Pro from scratch
4) Double checked all connections
5) Look through settings on my TV and settings on the graphics card through Nvidia Experience
6) Googled similar issues, but im not finding many that have the SAME issue as me
My setup:
CPU: Core 2 Duo E8500
Mobo: Dell OTP412 X38
GPU: Asus GTX560 Ti DirectCU II Top OC (1gb DDR5)
PSU: Corsair CX650
OS: Windows 10 Pro
RAM: 4GB DDR2
Screen/Monitor: 50" Sharp LED/LCD TV ( Full 1080p 60hz )

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Screen/Resolution Issues When Turning Screen On/Off

You appear to have a very old Dell (OptiPlex?) model desktop.
What is its model name and model number?
What is the exact "service tag" and "express service code" numbers on it?

Is it running Windows 10 Pro 32-bit or 64-bit?
You should download and save the appropriate driver from the NVIDIA site, then select the custom install option, then select the clean install option.

Are you having the same issues when using a standard computer monitor instead of using a HD TV?

I have two annoying issues with my new ThinkPad X1 Tablet (Model: 20JB001DGE, running Windows 10 Pro, Build: 1709; 16299.371): When trying to create a new folder on a network share on my Synology NAS I get the error message:If I click 'Try Again' the message remains. When 'Cancel' is clicked I got the new folder with the default name 'New Folder'.Sometimes this also happens when renaming a folder or file. The only way to get rid of it, is restarting the tablet.I have already been in contact with the Synology Support. They checked the NAS, which seems to be okay. This can be confirmed by using another Windows tablet with the same Win 10 build, which can access the NAS shares and create folder without any issues.I also contacted the Microsoft Support. They adviced me to disable all non-Windows services and all auto start items.I uninstalled my Antivirus and Firewall-Tool Avast Premier, using Windows Defender only now.We also tried out different SMB configurations. (activating SMB v1 only on both NAS an PC vs. SMB v2/3, which is the recommended and more secure configuration.)Nothing of this helped so far.The tablet is connected to the DVI port of a monitor via the USB 3 Ultra Dock.Every once in a while some items are displayed larger than normal or seem blurred, for example when opening windows explorer. This screenshot should illustrate the difference. Hello, my friend recently purchased parts and built his own computer. He also bought a 19" Sansui LCD tv that also doubles as a pc monitor. The problem is the screen resolution is stuck at 1024x768. All the drivers are installed correctly, and I mean ALL of them, and yet it still won't change. So I figured this must be something to do with the hardware. Any help would be appreciated.

The graphics card in question is a Sparkle 1Gb GeForce 9400 GT and is hooked to the monitor via vga.

A:Screen Resolution issues...

The monitor itself is most likely stuck in that mode. Its not exactly what I would call a "name" brand monitor - and if it reports to the video driver that it only supports 1024x768, then thats it.

What 19" monitor? Link to it from newegg.com if they have it.

LCDs TV that do PC monitors are NOT as good as PC monitors doing LCDs.

Samsung makes some LCD displays for $300~450 with TV inputs and remote (22"~26")

Refer to your manual for supported display modes.

I am trying fingure out how to change screen resolution. Unfortunately, my only choices are 1690x900, 1280x720, and 1024x768 all are 60hz. How do i get more choices. ThanksDoc Myers

A:Screen Resolution Issues

Your display panel from specs: Display17.3-inch diagonal HD+ BrightView WLED-backlit display (1600 x 900)  Digital flat panel screens only look their best at "native" resolution. In your case, 1600 x 900. And the refresh rate is "virtual". There is no refreshing like you used to have on old tube monitors: 60 hz is kind of a placeholder. So to answer your question directly, your screen should be set to 1600 x 900 and any adjustment you want to make in appearance should be done by scaling in the WIndows display properties.  Post back with any more questions. I got a new monitor about three months ago (an HP w17e widescreen) to replace my old 17in monitor. I was able to view my new monitor it at it's native resolution (1440x900) and everything was going great, but a couple days ago I turned on my computer and the resolution was set to 1024x768. I've gone through the Display Settings and attempted to change the size by using the slider. That doesn't work, the 1440x900 resolution isn't even an option. I've updated my graphic's drivers and that didn't work, I also tried to find drivers for my monitor but there aren't any.

Currently I've got my resolution set to 1280x960, which isn't too bad but I would much rather have my 1440x900 back. Anyone know how this can be achieved? Thanks for the help in advance!

Our Dell laptop needed a new hard drive so we installed one, formatted it, and installed Win Xp on it. Then we installed the drivers that came with the Dell. The problem is that no matter what we try to do the screen size is too small. We tried several settings with no joy.

We also replaced the CMOS battery. Could that have anything to do with the screen issue?

I have been putting off updating to Windows 10 on a Hewlitt Packard G60 laptop, however, today, the computer did upgrade.

It seems as if the Windows 10 installation worked, with the exception of two issues.

1. The screen resolution has been changed to 1024x728, and there is no way to change it to anything but lower resolution, so this causes the graphics to be stretched horizontally.

2. The picture used for the desktop has been rotated 90 degrees counter clockwise. I assume this is also a result of whatever the issue with the resolution is.

This laptop has a Mobile Intel 4 series express chipset adapter, and apparently has the most updated driver.

Can anyone help, or let me know if there is another driver for this somewhere? If not, can someone tell me how to revert back to Windows 7, because this is not acceptable.

Thanks

Hello jsrfo Welcome to the Ten Forums! and world of "Buggy Upgrade Installs"!

While you can revert back to 7 as long as you haven't run the DiskCleanup tool or removed the Windows.old folder quite yet the problem typically seen with upgrades from 7 to 10 is going three versions newer and running into headaches which result in forcing a clean install to follow! Too bad you are just now arriving here since there is a guide for skipping the initial upgrade to simply see a working copy of 10 go without headaches!

Recently another HP laptop upgraded to 10 from 7 had also come out "Buggy y y y y y" as all heck while already knowing a clean install would follow to clean up the mess! Other then that 10 runs all too much a lot like 7 but is the newer form of the WinMin kernel in use as well as seeing the newer form of a Start menu brought back.

The fact that the display there came out sideways doesn't clearly indicate that the upgrade is actually what went sideways on you not seeing everything go on as it should! I will still point you at a couple of guides seen here at TenF that will be for Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First and the Windows 10 - Clean Install regular guide showing the how things are done you will still want to lookover anyways.

I just bought a Lenovo Yoga 910 4k display and I'm already having issues with the screen resolution in certain applications. The two applications that I have the most problems with is Photoshop and Skype. As you can see, it's difficult to see as it's very zoomed out, especially in Photoshop. I attempted to mess with options in both applications, but it seems to be the laptop's issue and not the programs. The resolution is fine everywhere else. If anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate!

My last two X1's (G5 and G6) have both had an issue with their Lenovo 3.0 USB docking station.  It works great when connected, but when I disconnect, my X1 screen will drop down to a lower resolution.  When I go to the Display Settings in Windows, the system incorrectly thinks it is in the highest possible resolution.  I have to change the resolton setting to a random resoltion and then revert the changes.  When I do that I get back to the normal resoltion.  Any ideas how to fix? It's really annoying to buy a $250 dock from the OEM and have such an obvious shortcoming, especially since Lenovo insits on installing so much software on the laptop already.

I play games on an Asus laptop with only an NVIDIA 960M graphics card. I play some games at lower resolutions to keep up frames while gaming. Prior to the update I could alt+tab out of the game and the desktop screen would return to 1920x1080 and tabbing back in would keep lower resolution I have set for the game. Now, when alt tabbing out of of lower resolution screen, Windows desktop reverts to the lower resolution I have set for the game (in-game resolution is 1280x720, as exclusive fullscreen). And when tabbing back into the game there are some video settings being used that are used for 'borderless window' instead of my setting of exclusive fullscreen.

Hi,

I just built a new computer today and istalled windows 7 , hooked it up to my 24 inch monitor and was suprised to see a good portion of the native resolution not showing up leaving me seeing only a portion of the desktop ( no start bar or icons, just the clock and cpu meter in side bar ) I tried changing resolution a few times, but the high end of the resolutions were not fitting and a couple times the screen went blank ( blue ) and after a few seconds fixed itself, and then after choosing one of the lower resolutions it changed and it didnt fix itself.

I went on to my laptop and realized there is a issue with windows 7 and native 1920x 1080 resolutions... so I booted my new computer into safe mode to change the resolution so I can get out of blank screen.. but I cant change resolution in safe mode, so ..

how do I change the resolution so that when I boot it I dont get a blank screen - i can get in to safe mode no problem and see the screen if that helps. I could just reformat but there should be a simpler way...

thanks a ton

Did you install the graphics driver for your new PC?

W7 will install one by default, but may not have the resolutions you need or may display them incorrectly.

Okay, so let's get the hardware out of the way first.

nVidia EVGA GTX 580
I7-2600k
16GB Corsair RAM
Asus P8P67 Deluxe (I think? Can find the box if it's a big deal)
Windows 7 Pro, SP1

For displays, I have a Sony Bravia 40' TV running HDMI off of the GPU, and a 32' Zenbo running VGA off of the GPU's DVI.

Onwards to the issue. Both TV's run fine for what they are, but when I decide to do anything that's a full screen application, two things happen every time. First and foremost, I lost dramatic picture quality. Specifically, my color looks all washed out and grainy, as if I'm going from a 32bit to a 16 - and this will persist until . Secondly, my resolutions get warped, resulting in the process I'm running actually being a little bit larger than my display, thus I lose about an inch on all sides. Also, for some games, such as the new Tomb Raider, I get a message saying that Windows Aero has been temporarily disabled to improve performance. This doesn't always pop up, but does so enough during other more graphically intense games (Crysis) to be a point of concern.

Here's the tricky part.

I just tried to screencap this problem, and seemingly it does not exist. That is it say, when I took a screencap of the edges being off, the screencap show they're there. Same with my video quality; the problem doesn't show up on the screencap, despite the fact that I know it's there. I took a before/after picture of... Read more

A few weeks ago, I developed two problems with my Dell XPS 12 that seem like they may be related, but unfortunately, I haven't been able to solve either.
1) The first issue is that sometimes when I turn on my laptop (this has been progressing to EVERY time), it emits a series of 8 short beeps.  I can then turn it back off and on, and it starts normally.  (Except for today, which took several tries.)  I found that 8 short beeps is the beep code for the LCD screen.  However, I'm not having any screen issues.  I also ran the full diagnostics from Dell support and passed everything, including all LCD tests.
2) The second issue is regarding screen resolution.  Again, not EVERY time, but sometimes after my laptop has been in sleep mode and I "wake" it, the screen has resized from its normal HD (I have it on the recommended screen setting) to a much smaller, square width, resetting all my windows with it.  I can set it back, but it's VERY annoying to keep having to do this!  I have tried a number of fixes I found online, including making register alterations and changing when the laptop sleeps, but none has helped.
I'm by no means a computer expert, but I can find my way around with guidance, and I would appreciate any help with this!!!

Old computer is HP ProBook attached separately to a ViewSonic LED 1080p 22" monitor.  I use Extended Desktop mode with Built-In Monitor + Monitor.  Works great with Built-In Monitor at 1366x768 resolution and external monitor at 1920x1080

at 2560x1440 on the built-in monitor, and while the external monitor says 1920x1080, it looks magnified by 10 times or 20 times bigger.  Any ideas how to get the external monitor to be normal sized?  I like using the external for large spreadsheets.

Hi folks,

I have bad issues with the resolution settings under W7. With a fresh install of W7 I can't move up to 1600X1200. the native resolution of my monitor is 1920X1200. I started to try some others drivers but without any success. I tried to use the NV panel wich offers me the correct resolution but when I click on the apply button nothing change or kick me out of range. The exact same thing using the possible settings from the adapter properties. The reason is that the refresh rate seemed to be lock @70hz which is too high for that resolution using VGA. Some of you may say to try with HDMI cable, but I don't want because I 'm also using an analog KVM. It reminds me a PB I had when I installed OSX on my PC, but we're talking about W7 here, and of course it's not the same exact problem. It seems to be a common problem with many of you. Any solution to fix it ?

Thanks,

Problem is when i switch the tv to other output modes IE switch to xbox 360 and then come back to the HTPC, the PC pc will scan and reset the screen resolution. the tv will stay at 1920x1080 but the 7"LCD will move from 800x600( where it need to be) to 1024x768, this throws off the software that is running on the touchscreen and it just doesn't look right i always have to manually set the res back to 800x600, is there a way to lock the res to stay at 800x600? the tv holds the right res but i can't understand why the smaller 7" can't. this has been eating me for months now.

When my 5510 (i7-6820HQ + UHD screen) arrived one of the first things I tried was viewing one of the many 4K videos on YouTube (in Chrome), and I was disappointed to find that it kept stuttering / dropping frames. Selecting 2K video resolution (within YouTube) seemed to playback smoothly enough and was still better than the 1080p quality I was used to so I was happy enough with that in the short term and assumed that buggy drivers/firmware were to blame for the 4K stuttering, as surely the i7 CPU (plus either the integrated Intel HD 530 GPU or the Quadro M1000M GPU) would be capable of decoding & rendering 4K video at 60fps...
However, many months have passed, I've installed endless driver & firmware updates, and nothing has changed, if anything playback performance feels worse, and I've even found that watching 1080p Blu-ray rips fullscreen at 4K screen resolution results in stuttering video (even on 24fps videos) and out of sync sound in both MPC-HC or MPD - and that's with the EVR presenter selected in both apps. I've also tried setting the LAV Video Decoder filter to use QuickSync or CUVID but neither makes a difference.
Everything looks and feels like the CPU & GPU are doing all the right things and aren't working very hard (I've used CPU-Z and GPU-Z to keep an eye on load and nothing is maxing out, far from it, they're barely working at all - between 10-25% utilization depending on what I'm looking at) and the decoding is goin... Hi everyone,

From last few weeks I'm having this strange and annoying blank screen of death. I could just see a blank screen (not a blue screen) while either waking up computer from sleep or while trying to turn on the display by moving cursor/typing something(waking up from power saver mode of display, I set display to be of after few minutes of inactivity). So essentially screen becomes total blank. Just once or twice I saw this BSOD "DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE" but for all other times my screen is just blank. I could see the Hard Disk activity LED on during this blank screen. And almost after all subsequent boots, I could see "Windows has recovered from unexpected shutdown/serious error - Check for solution" message.

System - Windows 7 Pro x64 with all latest recommended and security updates
CPU - i7 2630QM
GPU - nVidia GT525M

First I suspected its because of my nVidia GT525M GPU drivers (I was using official latest drivers 320.49), so I completely uninstalled them with regular uninstall + DriverSweeper 2.1.0 from Guru3D.com. I did not install any nVidia/display drives since then. But just now I got another blank screen after it. Also I started connecting my PC to an old Sony Bravia TV with HDMI cable and that time the automatic installation of drivers failed. That is my second point of possible problem. Dear all, Happy new year and all

I wonder if you could help...

My husbands laptop this evening will not turn on AT ALL. It was working perfectly well a few days ago:

When the power button is turned on all that happens is the power light turns green. There is no sound coming from the hard drive (the hard drive light doesn't even show). In addition, there doesn't seem to be a fan working. And finally, there is a light strange noise (not a hard drive noise).

I am wondering whether it is a motherboard issue????
Woud creating a recovery bios boot CD help? Would like wipe the hard drive?

The major problem is that the laptop is used for all our business transactions and GASP.... we haven't backed it up, so we could potentially lose very important data
Many thanks and I do hope somebody is out there to help us.

Much geekness

I just bought an HP Pavillion dv6-7014nr and I love it! Except for one thing. I upgraded to the 1920x1080 screen to get the HD quality and the matte display. Everything on this screen is so tiny, its uncomfortable to read. I have increased the text size in windows to 130% dpi and I have downloaded and extension in Firefox to keep the zoom level I like. My problem is that with this increased DPI setting, the text in programs, such as iTunes gets cut off or overlaps. I was just wondering if there was a solution to this problem, or is it just something I have to live with?
Thanks very much!

A:[SOLVED] 1920x1080 screen resolution on a 15.6" Laptop Screen

1920x1080 doesn't suit everyone on a 15.6" screen as it's really more suited to large-screen external monitors (20" or more). It's big plus of course is that it gives you much more screen space to use for multi-tasking or using apps which have many palettes (like Photoshop). Personally I think 1920x1080 is way too high for the average laptop screen size unless you've got perfect eyesight.

If you don't need all that space, you may find that setting a lower resolution (and changing DPI & zoom levels back to their defaults) is more in line with what your eyesight can deal with. It probably won't look as pin-sharp as the native 1920x1080 resolution though, but at least you shouldn't get some app Windows extending beyond the screen edges.

Here is the issue, when my computer goes to sleep after it's on for a while when I move the mouse to get the screen back up it shows the backround no icons or anything to click.
Same if I turn it off and turn it back on. I have to turn it off and on many times then go to safe mode and shut down then turn it on again for it to work. Just now I had to turn it on/off 4 times for it to show the icons and task bar. Usually it is left blank with nothing to click having no choice but to turn it off.
Norton says no viruses.
My computer is HP with windows 7. I bought it in 2011.
This problem has been happening for a long time. Please help.

Hello squirrels and welcome to Seven Forums.

I think I'd start out by trying to do a startup repair. It's been suggested that the startup repair be done 3 times (regardless of what the notifications say) and the computer rebooted after each repair.

If this doesn't fix the problem one of the Forum experts has prepared these troubleshooting guides with some additional suggestions.

A:Setting Screen Resolution to Max my Screen is not responding.

Disconnect from your graphics card and plug into the motherboard port.

Uninstall the drivers for the 780 and start over.

You may or may not have to remove the card.

Unless someone comes up with a better idea.

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum, just joined actually, and I had a quick question. When I set my resolution to any other res other than the highest possible i get a black outline around my screen due to the resolution not stretching to fit my entire screen. This is fairly recent, as it never used to happen. I'm figuring it might be a driver problem, but I'm not sure. Any help would be great.

A:When lowering screen resolution, screen does not stretch to fit

Hi SevenUltimate welcome to the forums

I see you have a Geforce 220, I have the 210, the model down from you and have exactly the same issue.

Firstly, yes it's a driver issue. I have had to roll back to 258 edition to get it working properly again.

Take a look at my post about it here: Make Full screen actually look full screen maybe the suggestions will work for you, although they didn't for me.

Failing that, I'm willing to upload the 258 edition drivers to my Skydrive if you want? (mods/admins: please let me know if this is against the rules, don't think it is, but you never know)

Hope it helps

Hi. I'm new here and this is my first post. I looked around a little and found one other thread with a similar question, but the question wasn't really answered. I can't find anything on the net that doesn't confuse me so bad it makes my head hurt, so I thought I'd try asking here. Thanks in advance for any answers I get.

I will try and be as thorough as possible, although the resulting question will be simple. I'll start out with why I am asking the question to begin with.

So I am trying to play a game I used to play nearly ten years ago. It's a free online game called Continuum/Subspace and there are user created "zones" or variations of the game within the game (if that makes sense). I play in a zone called Trench Wars. It's a top down game, meaning you are looking down at your ship as if from above and the screen scrolls as you move to reveal more of the area (map) you are playing in. You are in a spaceship of your choice with varying weapons for each ship. The game requires aiming at your enemies before firing at them and anticipating their moves.

Well I noticed that playing at a higher resolution allows you to see more of your immediate area and expands your view of the map. It works just like your desktop in essence. The higher the resolution, the smaller the icons, but the more space you have. In the game, the higher the resolution, the smaller the ships are, but you can see more space around you. Obviously, this would give an advantage to anyone playing ... Read more

A:Forcing Screen Resolution Higher Than Native Resolution

Simple answer is: you can not go over the native resolution of LCD panel because its physical thing for each pixel lcd panel has a cell you can not have more pixels than there is physical pixels in that panel.

smaller than native resolutions achieved by grouping more than one cell to form pixel thats why non native resolution on lcd sometimes gets blurry or edgy

1: When the screen shows a dark picture, then when I immediately switch back to a mostly white picture, it's far duller, and gradually (over the course of about 10 seconds), the white screen lightens more and more. I presume this is a battery saving feature. Can I disable it somehow? 2: Fan issues. Although the fan is quiet, I'd rather it be quieter still (or even silent). From previous experience, I know Lenovo tends to (heavily) err on the side of caution, but I'd rather be able to control the fan speeds more directly. Can I somehow half the fan speed or by some other arbitray amount? I'll keep an eye on temperatures, and I know all the risks.

After not turning on my PC for about a month, I went to turn it on and the following events took place:
1. Normal boot to Desktop, no problems
2. Desktop image is stable on both monitors (dual monitor setup)
3. I let it sit there for a couple of minutes waiting for everything to load
4. I click to open "ANY" program and screens go to a flashing state of black and momentary program, back and forth, back and forth, single screen or both doesn't matter, Checked all connections off of video card output to monitors and there fine.
5. Finally I get the "BLUE" screen of death
6. PC automatically shuts down and goes to boot up a Option Screen for SAFE MODE
7. PC works fine in SAFE MODE w/Network option, but won't do a "RESTORE" either from SAFE MODE

I never got a Win 7 Disk with the PC, but I did create a IMAGE disk on my WD Portable HD a few months ago. How do I get that file (on the WD HD) to run as I can't see any EXE files to get it started and I can't get the PC the start it either. I'm starting to attempt to copy all my files off the PC in case I'll need to something drastic.

Any help is greatly appreciated is getting me back up and running, and by the way, I'm not vary computer savy, so please refer to things to do as a dummy like me can understand them. Great site and thank you all for sharing your knowledge with dummy's like me................

Hello,I'm not sure if this is the right place to post but hopefully I can get some help or be forwarded to a place a I can.So a few years ago my parents purchased a C40-05 all-in-one desktop. From the start there were problems. It would hang at the Lenovo screen, continuously have to enter Windows Repair and would not shut down correctly. After updating via the latest updates from both Windows and Lenovo, the desktop's display seems to be not working. When I power on the screen just stays blank as if no power is going to it. However, if I put in a CD i can hear it spin and also I can see the power buttons on both the mouse and keyboard light up. I can't even access the bios as there is no display what so ever.  Any of you experienced this or know how I can fix it? At this point it's not really worth taking to a shop but if I could access the bios at least that would be a start. ThanksChris

Hi guys!I have a Toshiba Encore tablet with windows 8.1 on it. After an update yesterday, the screen doesn't turn off when it gets in sleep mode.It turn black, but it still has the background light on.The same update messed up the screen luminosity. It is set to maximum by default, and no matter how much I change it, nothing happens. The battery drains very fast with the screen on this way and I really don't know how to solve it.I tried system restore, but it didn't have any images saved, so I need a solution apart from that. Many thanks!

A:Screen not turning off

You could try rolling back the updates until you uninstall the "bad" one. Process of elimination is all I know if you cannot restore point your way out or apply a backup image.

Yesterday I was in a hurry and it was taking a long time to shut the laptop down. So I went for a force shut down. But now when I am turning on the laptop, nothing is happening. The screen is black, nothing is coming up. I thought it's a screen problem, but the buttons are also not working. I tried the Caps lock button, Mute button, Airplane mode button, but nothing is happening. The screen is black. And nothing is coming. I waited for 10-15 mins but nothing is happening. Restarted the device quite a number of times, removed the battery and then tried to turn it on. But at the end, the problem is still there. I need it today at 3 in the afternoon. If someone can help, it will be very kind.

I have no idea what I did wrong.

Took apart my laptop (see signature/system specs) to get the part number off the fan and put the computer back together as normal. Turned it on and voila, no display. Don't know why. Rechecked the connection of the display cable a few times, and still no display. I'm wondering if maybe I damaged the cable or the system board. The computer turns on though, just no display!
Took apart the lid to check the screen. Firstly, HP's construction continues to amaze me. These things are built like tanks for sure! Secondly, there's no visible damage to the screen or any components inside of the lid. Going to put it back together and test the screen one more time, and if that doesn't work, I'll test with an external monitor to see how things work out...

I know, vague, but I'm kinda stuck/lost here.
Help?

A:Screen not turning on

Hello kbronski,

Keep in mind that all the LCD wire connectors are extremely fragile. Do not apply too much force while reconnecting the cables. Secure the connector with the clear tape.

If the external monitor doesn't work, try power cycling:

shut down
unplug battery and charger
hold power button for 5 to 10 seconds to drain all residual power
plug battery and charger back in
done....

If the external monitor does work, hold down the FN key while you tap the F-key with a picture of a monitor. Perhaps, it got turned off.

My monitor turns off every now and again, I've changed the monitor to test if it was that which was causing the problem but it still happens. I've also changed the wire, checked the power supply (seems fine from what I can tell) and replaced the hard drive. I could be playing a game or doing nothing on it at all and it would happen.

Don't think it's the graphics card as when it does work the images are fine.

One thing I noticed when it does turn off is that my external hard drive turns off too but the computer remains on,also once when I was playing music when the screen went off the music stopped too. Makes me think its a hardware problem but not sure which.
