Dell Dimension C521 Keyboard dead After Windows starts

Q: Dell Dimension C521 Keyboard dead After Windows starts

Hi all,
I have a Dell Dimension C521 with a keyboard problem:
Keyboard works during boot and in BIOS
Keyboard DOES WORK in Windows XP safe mode
Keyboard DOES NOT WORK in Windows XP normal mode
This problem started the other day without warning. Normally I would use System Restore to fix this but system restore was turned off. I have checked the kbdclass filer in the Registry and that was ok. Because it works in safe mode i know it's a driver issue, but I'm not sure what else to look at and I need major help here.

Preferred Solution: Dell Dimension C521 Keyboard dead After Windows starts

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Dell Dimension C521 Keyboard dead After Windows starts

Assuming it's a USB keyboard:

Boot in Safe Mode
Manually set a system restore point to be safe
Open Device Manager and expand list under USB
Right-click each USB root hub and select Uninstall
Save the one connected to mouse for last
Force shut down
Reboot normally and XP should reinstall the USB ports automatically

See if that solves the problem...
I presume you know that Microsoft doesn't support XP and IE8 anymore so there are lots of security holes that were never patched. Your PC is at risk for malware infections if you go on line...

I have a Dell Dimension C521 and its Ethernet port is just messed up. The contacts in it are all pulled and twisted. So i was wondering where I could buy something to replace this. I just need the whole thing with the Ethernet port and 2 usb below it. Anyone have an Idea of where to buy this? Just a side note, but I have replaced these before, but I cant find one with the Ethernet and usb. I can only find the USB ones online.

Hi Everyone,

I have a Dell Dimension C521 desktop computer, and recently I made the mistake of updating it's BIOS. Originally the BIOS installed was version 1.1.8, and now I have 1.1.10 installed.

Since installing the new BIOS my computer does not boot up normally. Even though I have set the boot order correctly the computer will not load Windows. Instead after the BIOS post screen I simply see a cursor flashing in the top left corner of my screen.

Ironically if I press F12 during the boot sequence and manually select the Hard Disk drive Windows will load.

It is as though the computer does not recognize to boot Windows unless manually told to do so.

Any ideas?

Give me your feedback befor i buy... Im not getting this PC for gaming or nothing. Maybe some Guild Wars or something but now anything major. Think it would last a while?

A:Dell Dimension C521

Well what specs do you plan on having for the pc, the Dimension c521 comes in my already configed specs by dell or you can customize it. The c521 is dells lowest priced desktop so it has vista basic, intergrated graphics which arent good for gaming and since its a very small form faxctor this leaves very small room for expanisons which even normal sized oem pcs are limited on upgrades. Even if this system has a pci-express video card its going to be half height which limits chocies for future upgrades.

I have an old dell dimension c521 desktop with a AMD Athlon X2 4400 2.3 ghz  CPU. I would like to know if I can swap the original motherboard with another Dell OEM motherboard that supports a quad core CPU, such as a AMD Phenom or Intel Core2Quad. Will I have any issues with powering on the PC with a different dell motherboard? or with the front panel USB, headphone, power button?

A:Dimension C521 Dell to Dell motherboard swap - will it work?

Dell typically uses custom connectors between motherboards and front panels. So unless you -or somebody else- has mapped the connector in the c521 case, you may not be able to install a different Dell (or non-Dell) motherboard in this case.
You'll also need to purchase a new Windows OS license from Microsoft because your current license is tied to the c521 motherboard. And, you'll have to reinstall Windows on the hard drive because the motherboard hardware will be entirely different.

I recently purchased 2 gb worth of RAM to upgrade my Dell Dimension C521 that only had 512mb. I received the upgrade yesterday and attempted to install it myself. I removed the old RAM and place the two new RAM into my PC. I turned it on and all I got was a black screen and I heard a beeping noise. I powered down again and put the old RAM back in. THe computer came on and there was no beeping, but I still have a black screen. My monitor seems to be in powersave mode, all most like my PC doesn't recognize the monitor. I took the new RAM out and place the old one back in and it works fine.. Is this comomn? Am I doing something wrong? Need a little help!!

I reinstalled my XP and now I need to reinstall my drivers which I know how to do I just don't know in what order to do it. Please translate for me. The Dell website says I'm supposed to install in this order for my computer:

1 - Desktop System Software
2 - Chipset
3 - Video Adapter
4 - Network Interface Card
5 - Audio Adapter
6 - Modem
7 - Wireless Network Card
8 - Mice, Keyboards

But when I put my driver cd in these are the ones listed for my computer:

Video Drivers
Audio Drivers
Controller Drivers
Miscellaneous Utilities
Modem Diagnosis
Modem Drivers
Network Diagnosis
Network Drivers
System Applications
System Dell Diagnosis
System Drivers
Video Diagnosis

In what order do I install these? (Note: if they don't label it exactly the same I don't know what I'm doing and they're confusing me here lol). So just looking at my drivers and the order in which they say to install can you tell me what order I install mine?

A:Trying to install Dell Dimension C521 Drivers

What matters is to install chipset driver first. After that, any order is fine.

Hi, I have had my Dell Dimension for about 6 month now and it has been running fine, but recently when I start up the machine it breaks on the screen where it says "DELL" in big letters and "Dell Dimension C521" with the loading bar at the bottom, it gets half way then just stops. I have left it up to half an hour to see if it was just 'stuck' but it doesn’t move, so I manually shut it down and re-boot and it works fine. This isn’t really a major problem but it can get annoying when I’m trying to do system updates and it restarts, breaking, forcing me to restart it again.

I have Dell Dimension C521, with Windows Vista. Guessing I don’t really need to post any tech spec because it’s not spec related.

Does anyone else have this problem, Thanks for the help. Ed

I hope this is in the right place, but if not, sorry about that in advance.

So i have a Dell dimension C521 that i got off of a friend who got it from his uncles friend and I need the restore disks. The person who originally bought the computer doesn't have them and I have tried requesting them but he doesn't know the name he used when he bought it (He is not the smartest person).

So I am wondering if there is anyone who has them and can share them on dropbox or somewhere, or has a link to where you can download them. If you have them I would greatly appreciate it.

Btw, I would prefer that they be the ones for Windows XP MCE 2005, but vista would be fine too because I have another one of these computers without a hard drive and I could just switch some parts out.

Hello and thank you for reading the time to read this post.

About a few months ago, I started to experience a very strange problem with my mouse--which many have described before-- it is basically erratic behavior, hard to move it from left to right up down etc. This occurs sometimes when batteries are low so I replaced the batteries and no luck, then I tried switching the usb port of the receiver and still no luck. i then concluded it was the mouse so I went out and bought a new mouse... still, the new mouse was ALSO acting erratically so I can only conclude that their must be some kind of problem with my USB ports...

I should note that I recently purchased a new laptop and the mouse functions properly on that computer so I don't believe it is a problem with the mouse...

The kicker is that, my wireless card which is also USB related, works fine... And also my keyboard(usb) works fine so realistically, I have no idea why my computer mouse is not functioning properly. I have tried 2 different mouse, have tried different USB ports, have the mouse working on diff computers but I can't get it to work on my main desktop, consistently that is... It works.. dont get me wrong but after some time it starts to act all weird for 5-10 minutes then works then acts weird and it makes it quite hard to game(which is what I enjoy using my desktop for)..

I realize this computer is a little old but I'm not ready to completely retire it as it is still fully functio... Read more

What I wanted to do was open the faulty one and swap hard discs - just to confirm where the fault was

Problem: I simply can't get to the hard drive!
It's a very slim model and everything is tightly packed in

If I can take out the PSU, then I can take out the hard drive
But the PSU won't budge
It seems to be hooked onto something below, that is not within sight

I searched the net and came across the exact same PC
See the following link for the image of the inside:

1. Restore points get corrupted and do not always work, so that is not a big issue.
2. sounds like you are using the wrong driver for your graphics card, this reverting seems to be kicking out the wrong driver.

You should try to remove the driver totally and then re-install based on the graphics card type. You may have to open up the computer and take a look inside to see the model number of your graphics card, or if it is built into the motherboard, look for the correct driver based on your board type.

I hope this helps.

Hey all,

First off I just want to mention that coming on here was my absolute LAST resort. I try very hard to not ask for help about problems that Google can answer but I'm running out of ideas here.

I'm running a 6 year old Dell Dimension 8400, Windows XP, 1 GB Ram, Intel 4 can't remember the processor speed exactly. A couple of months back my hard drive finally quit on me and I replaced that. Out of the blue, my keyboard and mouse stopped responding when Windows booted. Everything would load fine, Windows would do its normal startup routine, and my keyboard and mouse would respond properly for about 50 seconds after start up and then I would get nothing. The screen didn't freeze; programs were running but my keyboard and mouse just weren't responding.

Shortly after a few reboots, I started getting a Keyboard Failure message on BIOS start up. I looked things up and the only solution I really found was to reset the CMOS jumper. I did that. Now, I still get the Keyboard Failure notification but now when Windows starts to load, it immediately reboots and loops that forever. I disabled the reboot on failure option and instead of rebooting, I just get a very plain and generic 0x7B blue screen. I also removed the CMOS battery and tested it with a volt meter. Got about 3.something out of it so that doesn't appear to be the case either.

Now I'm stumped. I'm pretty sure it's hardware related. However I don't really want to think... Read more

My trusty old (5 years or so) Dimension has finally sat down on me. Fails to power up to the point where BIOS talks to display. Power light on front of cabinet is solid amber. Have tried swopping/reducing memory, removing all option cards, removing all disks, DVDs, &c. All voltages measure OK on P1, except for pin 14 (PS_ON), which reads zero. Pin 8 (POK) reads 5.1V, but of course, I've no idea what these would be were the darn thing working. At no time do any of the four LEDs at the rear show any signs of life. Anyone out there got any ideas? I'd hate to buy a PSU and then find it was the motherboard. Although I worked on computers (large systems - yes, I know, I'm a dinosaur!) before I retired, I'm no expert now; but my shakey hands are still capable of holding a voltmeter.

Hi about two weeks ago both of the usb ports on the front of my Dell Dimension 4700 went dead after trying to use a multi-port hub with them. Now nothing will read on either of them. A:Dead usb ports on from of my Dell Dimension 4700

Failure after connecting a device, is typically not a driver issue.

You can try reinstalling the motherboard/system or USB drivers (they aren't often seperate). The drivers are available on the Dell website.

I'm working with a Dell Dimension C521 PC. It came with a PCI-Express video card which apparently has failed, yet the motherboard itself has on-board video. The system will boot using this video output (as opposed to the card which produced nothing) but when it finally gets to windows the auto-detect driver routine kicks in and begins to detect the video card, prompting the user to "Continue Anyway" to finish installing unsigned drivers. Unfortunately this event takes place in front of the installation of the USB keyboard and mouse (times like these I wish it had PS/2 ). Anyway, whether I boot up into Safe Mode or normal a prompt comes up about installing drivers for the on-board chipset. I can't interact with it because the driver install routine for the keyboard/mouse becomes interrupted.

A:Dell Dimension C521; USB key/mouse driver load interrupted by video card driver load

Bump. I've been thinking... the only way I think this can be fixed is if I boot from a Linux CD or something similar and delete a particular set of drivers for this video card. It can't prompt you to install any drivers if they don't exist, right? But I don't know where to go to delete such files and prevent them from automatically trying to install themselves. Any ideas?

Generally speaking, if you have a Dell case you will need (at least) a Dell motherboard to go in it. they are usually made for only one board. As for the video card there is no way that you could fit a 9800GTX in that case. There are a ton of cases to choose from on those sites. Hope this helps you out.

I used my pc Sunday morning without any problems and left it as usual for awhile as I did other things. When I came back to it I couldn't get it to run. I switched it off and on and the fan went crazy but no response from the actual pc. The start button remained amber.
Monday night I tried again and it ran without any problem until I left it and it went to standby. I have tried since then but it won't boot, the fan is very loud and the light remains amber.
I have unplugged it and checked connections but it won't start.
I have heard it could be the CPU or the motherboard, is there any way I can fix this without taking it to a repair shop?
Many thanks

Hey. My dad turned on the computer today to find that the keyboard was unresponsive. There was no keyboard detected through the Control Panel. The only thing I have about this so far is that when I unplug the keyboard and plug it back in, all three lights (NumLock, CapsLock and ScrollLock) light up before shutting off. Then, the hardware is still not detected.

I'm not good with computers, but I believe if the keyboard has a driver, it should be an HID (Human Interface Device). I did notice that one of the HID's in the Device Manager has no driver. Is it a driver problem or could it be from something else?

First thing to try is another keyboard of any make... Is this the PS/2 keyboard or the USB.
And if you have canned air, blow out the socket... sometimes just enough lint, dirt, dust, and crud gets in the wrong spot and prevent a good connection.
But the Dimension 2400 has a fairly fragile motherboard and power supply... if you overdrive that computer, you can cause the system board to fail.
Also, check to see if any of the small barrel-like devices sticking up from the motherboard are puffy or leaking a brown or rust colored stuff... or have rounded tops... that could mean the system board is toast.

Hi everyone,

I recently installed Windows 7 in a partition of my hard drive along with XP. No problems at all with that but...

I recently purchased a DVB USB Dual Tuner Stick to work with Windows Media Centre. Been having problems with it from the dot but I think that is mainly down to the signal from the aerial.

What's happened though is I left it plugged in when I restarted my PC and now the BIOS takes for ever to get to the Windows loading screen and I can't even get into the BIOS for the reasons explained below.

I have a Dell Dimension E521 which has no PS2 port, yes no PS2 port! So I can't plug one of them in. So at the initial screen I can't press F2 to enter system setup to make sure 'Enable USB Legacy Devices' is checked. I've downloaded the latest BOIS flash form the Dell website which is the same version as the current one and applied that. When I switch on the PC my KB's lights doesn't come on straight away either like there is no power going to them. Also when Windows 7 is inactive for a while is goes into the locked mode and the KB and mouse won't work then. It's obviously a USB failure/problem?

I've seen people talking about taking the battery out of the Motherboard and clearing the CMOS, is that not risky and I could lose all my information or end up having a defunct Motherboard? How do I do that?

Any help will be greatly appreciated, I'm so annoyed!

A:USB Keyboard not working during boot - Dell Dimension E521

I was looking at a friends Dell Dimension e521 yesterday and it's associated problems.

Virii infections/spyware bad javascripts etc.

After a few attempts to run spyware and AV proggies, and have them halt with bogus errors, I decided to boot into safe mode.

OK rebooted pressed F8 and when the safe mode choices appeared the Ketboard and mouse were NFG in selecting any of the choices.

The only option was to wait for the timer to count down and "Start windows normally"!

Just what is it that freezes the keyboard till the LOGON screen?

Oh and there's no F2 or F12 execution at post to get into cmos/bios setup either. (KB is frozen here too).

There are no ps2 KB/Mouse ports on this machine only the USB port where the combo KB~Mouse single usb plug is inserted!

I did eventually get other, AV and Spyware proggie's on to the machine (Eset and Malwarebytes to replace McAffee) and they did find 3 virii and 46 pieces of spyware, one of which was the AV2009 crap, Which slipped right by McAffee!

Even after removing the above, the KB/Mouse stays frozen till "Logon"!

I thought possibly the virii and/or spyware had somehow been the culprit!

Just what is it that is disabling the KB/Mouse until "Logon"? Has anyone else had this problem with the e521?

Dell Dimension 2350
Pentium 4 1.80GHz

I have not used this computer for about a week, and now when I turn it on my keyboard doesn't work. It is a generic keyboard that came with my Dell.(Mouse works fine until I try to type, then freezes). I went into Device Manager and there was a yellow sign indicating a problem with my keyboard. I tried to update driver, but there was no newer version than the one installed. Device properties indicate that "this device can not start. (code 10)". I don't know what code 10 is. Tried to uninstall, and reinstall... nothing.

So, naturally, I tried a different keyboard (the one I know is good) and this one is USB (wired Natural Ergonomic 4000 by Microsoft) and it installed fine. According to device manager, it works properly. However, still can not type. Tried to connect it to a different USB port; that didn't help either.

Any suggestions?

Try plugging both keyboards into a different computer and see if they work.

I was on my computer last night and suddenly my keyboard and mouse stopped working.  I replaced the batteries on both and tried reconnecting to the receiver following the protocol (pressing the reset button on the device and within 15 seconds pressing the button on the receiver).  No luck.
1) I took the receiver, mouse, and keyboard and was able to use them on a difference computer, so they check out.
2) I tried different USB ports on the Dell and could not get it to work
3) I tried a wired USB mouse on the Dell and it did not work
Since I have turned the computer on and off trying to troublshoot this, I can only get to the initial login screen but I can't interact with the computer.  I think if I can interact with the computer I have a chance of troubleshooting and fixing this, but for now I am dead in the water.  thanks.

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice at the welcome screen and you will get the classic logon. Once you get logged on, use your keyboard to navigate.

Any help in investigating & resolving the following appreciated ... not sure what's going on ...

just started today, everything was alright before, and nothing (knowingly) changed ...

on a machine with Win XP Pro SP1, it boots OK with normal boot messages flying past, then Win starts and it looks OK, mouse works, but as soon as the Win XP start up screen with the moving blue dots finishes, everything goes dead

it looks like the connection between the machine and the keyboard/mouse & monitor stop working because there is just a black screen and no response to keyboard & mouse - also the neon on the monitor goes off

I tried another monitor, keyboard & mouse but same problem.

what's happening? how do I investigate when I can't see anything?

is it a virus (the machine has got an up to date copy of Norton AV)? motherboard failure? power issue?

A:What's happening? - Windows starts up, then everything goes dead

Try safe mode or last known good. Should have installed SP2 by now.

Hello to all,   I recently did a clean reinstall of Windows XP (Home) on my Dell Dimension 2350. All went fine. Now I need to install the correct drivers. I have the Dell Resource disc and this is where the problem starts.    As noted elsewhere, after the reinstall the screen display of the Resource disc is as it would be in "Safe Mode". I was aware of this. As such, the Resource disc Search Criteria screen was a bit larger than the monitor screen. I was able to size it to fit the screen but this is really not the problem it is the following: The Search Criteria options I have from the drop down menus (on screen) are as follows:System Model:   All, Dimension C521, DXC061, Dimension DXP0G1, Dimension E521, DM061, XPS710    (Which, if any, do I pick?)Operating System: (I think I got this one)   All, Windows XPTopic:   (Maybe this one too)   All, Applications, Dell Diagnostics, Diagnostics, Drivers, Utilities   For the life of me I cannot figure out the exact drivers I am to install*. Windows XP only appears in the Operating System menu. I pretty much know the install order but as I said, I'm a bit confused about selecting the correct drivers from the disc. This computer is not connected to the internet at the moment so I can't download and use any sort of driver detection program. Other searches have confused me further and have provided no specific answer to this problem.&nbs... Read more

A:Installing drivers after Windows XP reinstall on Dell Dimension 2350 using Dell Resource disc

You need, in installation order:

Chipset driver
Video driver (depends on which video card)
Audio driver
Network driver (depends on which you have)
Modem driver, if you use a dialup modem

Go to the Support page and put in your Service Tag. It should give you the drivers you need. You can download them on any PC and copy onto a USB stick for installation on the 2350.
You only need the applications, if you actually use them (eg, Roxio, Jasc Paintshop, etc).
Then install your antiviral software and get online to the Microsoft Update site for all the patches and updates.
Keep in mind that XP is no longer supported by Microsoft and they stopped releasing security fixes for XP and IE9, more than 1 year ago. So they're both full of security holes and put your personal data at risk.
