Setting up a low speed computer, what software to use??

Q: Setting up a low speed computer, what software to use??

Hi there,

Soon i am going to be getting some old computers from the school, re-formatting them and then completly re-installing the OS,AV software, and a firewall. I was wondering what would be best for a computer that is about:
266Mhz, 64-192mb RAM (most likely 64mb), and about a 2-5Gb HDD, also possibly a crappy GFX Card.

One thing to keep in mind is that most people who are recieving them will probably be incompetent, so i think that a version of windows will probably be the best option, i have 98,2000,XPhome.XPpro.
Im guessing that 98/2000 will be the best, im pretty sure that they will already have 2000 installed so that will be a good bonus.

Preferred Solution: Setting up a low speed computer, what software to use??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Setting up a low speed computer, what software to use??

Anything under 128MB RAM definitely Windows 98SE.
Make life easy for yourself and give them all W98SE.
If for some PCs you decide on W2K, format in FAT32, don't use NTFS, those disks are too slow.

And DON'T use the PCs the way they come. Format and reinstall from scratch for ALL of them!

I have just purchased two mother boards and processors and need some help on figuring out how to set up the clock speed and FSB speed on them so they will run properly with the processors I have installed on them.

1st Motherboard & Processor

Motherboard: Giga-byte GA-7VAXP
Processor: AMD 2400+
RAM: 512 Mbytes PC2700 (333Mhz)
Clock speed options: Auto(default), 5x, 5.5x, 6x...12x, >=12.5x
FSB speed options: 100Mhz, 133Mhz, 166Mhz

2nd Motherboard & Processor

Motherboard: Giga-byte GA-7DXE Version 2.0
Processor: AMD 1600+
RAM: 128 Mbytes PC2100 (266Mhz)
Clock speed options: none
FSB speed options: 100Mhz, 133Mhz

Can somebody tell me where I should put the initial settings for these so they work with the processors. I would hate to leave them at their default settings to find out I am losing speed because it was not set properly. Any help would be appreciated.

So I just bought a new Mobo/RAM combo.

RAM: Corsair XMS3 DDR3 4GB (2x2) 1600MHz kit.

Everything booted up fine (installing Windows as I type this), but when I went into the BIOS to check up on things, I saw that the RAM was set to 1333MHz. Now, I've never messed with RAM settings before (timings, speed, voltage, etc) so I could definitely use a little help here.

Thanks in advanced.

First of all, you could tell what is the CPU revision?! If C2, bad news - this revision has problems with memory controller. If C3, we can proceed. Well, I don't know the BIOS of your mobo, but I hope AWARD. The timings are those described in the packaging of memory - usually come printed on the sink too. Make changes to the BIOS only in fields that concern them. Do the same in the fields of voltage and speed. Save the changes and reboot the PC. If something goes wrong, like BSOD's, or other instabilities, it is likely that the voltage of the northbridge needs to be increased. In this case, test a micro-increasing voltage at a time, saving the changes in the BIOS and rebooting the PC. I must warn you about the risks of overclocking, so be aware.
I wish you luck and I hope it was useful!

I have a PC with an ASUS F3P-7 Motherboard (i440BX – P3B-F) PIII 300mhz, 256 mb RAM. When I attempt to boot the system it goes straight into to Awards BIOS setup and gives me an error message that says, ”During the last boot up your system hung for an improper CPU speed setting. Your system is now working in safe mode. To optimize the system performance and reliability, make sure the CPU speed conforms to the specification of you CPU.”

I am running Windows 2000 PRO. Every time I reboot it hangs after doing the memory check and displaying the Harddrive and DVD drive during the startup. Never get a chance to go into windows safe mode. Just prior to this my monitor got alternating half inch black lines running up and down the screen. At this point I was already getting this improper CPU messing. I switch video cards and now the black lines are gone and I can read the screen but I am still hanging on the improper CPU speed settings. I have tried resetting the BIOS back to the factory setting (F5) but not much changes???

In my BIOS, under ADVANCED the CPU Speed is set to MANUAL.
The CPU Core: BUS Freq Multiple is 4.5V
The CPU BUS/PCI Freq is 66.8/33.40
The CPU Vcore is 2.00v.

Any ideas, suggestions????

Welcome to TechSpot

As so many others, you have "fallen" for the speed of an AMD Athlon XP.
Their values such as "2400+" mean: comparable to an Intel processor running at 2400MHz. The actual speed of the AMD CPU is lower, in your case 1800MHz.
Technically you have an AMD1800. But as it performs equal to an Intel2400, it is marketed with its "comparable to an Intel2400" moniker.

If you use an internal Winmodem, replace it with an external V.92 modem.
Check your telephone connection box(es). Use as short as possible a lead from outlet to PC.

That test works on dialup as well.

Hi all,

I just bought G skill ripjaw series 8 gb ram, 4gb x 2. I successfully put them into my computer with the dual channel but my computer recognizes the speed as 1333. I know this is normal and you have to set it to bios to get 1600.

However, I set the XMP profile to enable and it does show the ram as 1600 but then it overclocks my CPU to something like 3333 or something. I forget the exact number but it seems to be overclocking something else to compensate. So when I get into my desktop and play a video or run a game, it runs extremely slow, and short after my computer just shuts off. This scared me quite a bit so when I went back into bios, before being able to set the XMP back to disabled, it shut off again.

I then put in my old ram and everything ran normally. I then put back in the G skill rip jaw and everything ran normally again. So the issue is def the XMP profile.

How can I safely and stably run the rip jaw at 1600 speed as I had intended to? Is this just not possible for me? I have an i5 first generation.

Please assist.

I put some pictures below of my bios and system specs.

I would really appreciate the help. I am not much of a techie as you can see.

Now, I've been on dial-up since I had my own home computer, which would be about 4 years now, and finally, I will be getting cable internet before the year is over.

I was just wondering what to expect, how everything generally gets set up, because I honestly can't say I know exactly what I'll be doing.

I know I'll have to hook the cable line into a modem, but from there, I'm pretty much lost. The cable line is about 30-40 feet away in the other room, which makes me wonder if it'd be necessary to get a wireless router, and how would I go about setting THAT up. Then how do I still get the cable hooked up to the television if it's connected to the modem?

If anyone would be so kind as to let me in on how this is all going to work, that'd be great.

I know computers fairly well, so I'll understand explanations; but since I've only been exposed to dial-up personally, I'm clueless.

A:Setting up high speed and wireless network

wow, still on dial up all this time?

Am not sure if true for all cable, but i can tell you from what i know a "splitter" is connected to the incoming cable to split the data from the TV stuff. so you have a single connector but will end up with two wires.

So you'd have
incoming cable <Splitter> Data only cable <Choices> Computer

where Choices could be

1) just a cable modem, or
2) cable modem to a router , or
3)Combination modem/router device

With just one computer you wouldn't need router for its connection sharing but don't know if needed for other reasons

Also, you should check and see what the cable company will charge you for cable modem monthly rental vs. what it costs to just buy your own of whatever (assuming you know what you need)

e.g. I think RCN was gonna charge $5/month when i first got my cable (their fee since dropped to $3/month). But i bought my own for about $60 or so... like 5 or more years ago.. so good to figure out what works for you

I have recently upgraded the ram on my HP ProDesk 400 G1 (i7-4790S) computer from 2x4GB to 2x8GB using GSkill Sniper memory sticks, part number F3-1600C9D-16GSR. The new memory sticks were tested on another computer and known to be working OK. My HP ProDesk recognises the correct amount of ram and boots successfully. However, after running cpu-z to check the ram settings it appears the bios has underclocked the ram from 1600 mhz to 1333 mhz. The original 2x4gb of HP ram were running correctly at 1600 mhz. I have checked the bios setting and confirmed it is now set at 1333 mhz. There are no bios settings that I can find that allow me to manually adjust the memory setting. I have checked the HP manual which states memory must be: - industry-standard 240-pin - unbuffered non-ECC PC3-12800 DDR3-1600 MHz-compliant - 1.35 volt or 1.5 volt DDR3/DDR3L-SDRAM DIMMs - support CAS latency 11 DDR3 1600 MHz (11-11-11 timing) - contain the mandatory JEDEC SPD information From what I can tell the GSkill Sniper memory sticks meet these requirements. On checking the Newegg website, I found the following statement listed under the specifications for this memory:- to reach rated memory speed, enabling Intel XMP profile or manual BIOS tuning is required Is there an issue with my HP computer reading the ram settings? If so is there something else in the ram sp... Read more

I have a high-dpi mouse, so my Windows pointer speed is set to a very low value. Accordingly, when I try moving the mouse using the touchpad, my pointer barely moves even with the highest setting in the visual UI:   I assume this maps to some multiplier variable internally. What I need is to modify this variable to be able to actually move my mouse pointer - right now my Touchpad is basically useless. As an interim solution, I manually change my mouse pointer speed in the windows settings every time I switch to my Touchpad, but that gets really annoying after a while... Any ideas?

My single-user Windows 7 Home PC is running both IE 11.0 latest version and Chrome latest version. I've always used IE as the default browser, but decided to change it. A couple of weeks ago I set Chrome as default, and pretty soon after, my Speed Dial 2 was completely inaccessible, as in "Page not found."

I started mining my Acronis True Image backup for files that I thought may contain all the data, but after several tries, I stopped for fear of hosing the whole system. My Speed Dial has a lot of groups and bookmarks, so I finally gave up and restored my most recent Acronis backup. It worked marvelously... Whew! At least I know for sure my backups are good.

So today, I again set Chrome to the default browser. Kaboom. I restored yesterday's Acronis backup and am back to square one. Any ideas what might be happening? I really would like for Chrome to be my default browser, but rebuilding Speed Dial 2 is something I really don't want to do.

I'd appreciate any ideas. I hope I've given all the information necessary to think about this.

So, I've been trying for a month now to get my comcast xfinity upload speed to be the 3-4 mb that I'm paying for, on a dell 17R. Comcast has been out to run new cable under the house, change out the modem twice, and the signal is fine. My Dell Inspiron 17R will not get above .40 for upload speed though. Not only that, the upload just cuts off sometimes, when uploading to say photobucket. The downlaod speed on the other hand, is super fast, and above what I'm paying for. I'm paying for 15/3, and I get 20+ mb for download, and .40 for upload.

Now, I have a 5 year old laptop that I plugged into the modem, and voila, it magically gets 4.11 mb for upload....just as the upload speed should be. This is a PC or setting problem with the 17R, yes? I don't know what else it could be, being the other laptop works fine.

However, while my desktop is being re-set up, I am on the laptop, and even though Cox assures me I should be getting the max speed (we tested it online), I can only download two sources at once and those are at speeds of around 25-80 kb/sec.

How do I change the setting to download more sources at once, and b) is it most likely individual servers that are the villains here, and not my laptop? Thanks.

Speedfan works, but you just have to dink around with it quite a bit. Try Motherboard Monitor, if your mobo is supported, a lot of times it'll set itself up for you. Sometimes you have to go in and manually set the sensors, but once you get it, it seems to remember, even after a reformat and reinstall.

Using the onboard audio in the PC (just Realtek HD), Video card is a Radeon HD 5830 using the HDMI output.

I've looked through all the audio playback settings and the Realtek HD Audio Manager and can't find anything to just simply delay the audio output.

Does anyone know of any tool or software to do this? Or of something pre-existing in Windows to perform this?

When I click on a photo in Windows Explorer, I would like to have it start a particular software. I seem to have forgotten how to set the preferences. Any suggestions?

A:Setting preferred software when selecting a photo

I think this will help with that,

Open With - Change Default Program

If your photos are different file types you probably have to do that for each. (jpeg, png, etc.)

You may be able to do it in the software itself too but you don't say which software.

I currently have speed fan but what ever i do i cant adjust the speed of my fans with it.

I have read various guides online with no joy so i think its time to try something else if there is anything.

A:Is there any fan speed software i can download

There are several programs that can show the fan speeds and other related information of your hardwares, the one I use on my laptop is Speedfan, you can read more about it here and can even be used for free.

Does anyone know if there is any software for displaying CPU temp, and/or controlling the fan speed for the HP DV1040US notebook? I know there is software available for the Dell laptops but I can't find anything for the HP models.

My fan seems to rarely kick on and the computer has been locking up (also fried the integrated wireless adapter). I put a cooling platform under it and that has helped to prevent the lockups, but that only covers up the problem... it doesn't fix the root cause.

Thanks in advance!

A:Fan speed/CPU temp software for HP

I've found very few notebooks have the sensor circuitry to display temperatures. Apparently, that's one of the concessions to power consumption.

What do you guys use for this, I see many on the net but am unfamiliar with which ones are safe.  Some Install to the pc, so maybe there are some Portable ones available also?
Thanks, pcpunk

A:USB Speed Testing Software

I have never had the need to use such software, however, some users use CrystalDiskMark.  Note, the portable version will not show ads.

Hello Genova21 and welcome to Seven Forums.

Most (if not all) new computers come with a manufacturer's specification sheet for that specific computer. The spec sheet lists just about everything you need to know. This is a sample spec sheet for a Sony Vaio and it can be opened in Notepad:

spec sheet.txt

If it's a used computer you should still be able to get the name of the manufacturer and a part number for the RAM, hard drive, etc. With that info you should be able to go online to get the specs. More time consuming but certainly possible.

Hello, what software can I use to manually control the fan speed on my gtx 295 video card? I think I am having heat issues.

A:software to control fan speed gtx 295

Either of these,

MSI Afterburner

EVGA | EVGA Precision | EVGA Precision

should work. Or you can try RivaTuner,

RivaTuner v2.24c download from Guru3D.com

which the other two are based on. RT may not work as it hasn't been updated in a while, and may have problems it you are using an unsupported driver.

I was using EasyTune6 from Gigabyte to manage my fan speeds in Windows 8.1, now I have "upgraded?" to Windows 10 and it appears that EasyTune is not compatible with the new operating system. Can anyone recommend another program for fan speed management? Preferably freeware, as I'm a tightwad who rarely pays for software, if I can get it for free. Windows fan management is just annoying, because I have 5 fans and they are constantly spooling up and down, which makes a lot of noise. Thanks in advance.

I have a Brother MFC-J825DW. I installed the software and it works fine.
Photoshop is also present on this machine (W7 Home, 64bit) and it was installed long time before the Brother.

When I scan a document from the device (pressing the SCAN button on the device, as oppose to from Windows), a window pops up in Windows asking me which software do I want to use for this scan: The Brother one, or Photoshop, hence defeats the purpose of a "one button scan" feature. There is no "remember this selection" option.

How do I set up the Brother to be the default scanning software?

Note that I have installed the same software in several other Windows (7 and XP) machines which also have Photoshop installed and never had this issue in any other PC.

Thank you.

A:Brother MFC Software - setting as Default Scanner Program

well you should be able to go into the printers section and set the brother printer as the default printer by right clicking on the printer you want as default and selecting set as default. That should take care of the issue. If not post back and we can go from there.

This problem confuses me. We've been experiencing slower than normal internet speeds recently. We have Verizon DSL, only 3300 down. Lately we've been getting way lower speeds. I just checked using Verizon's speedtest and it came out as 72 Kbps down and 712 Kbps up.

We have two laptops. Mine is 1.6GHZ with 1GB RAM and hers is a slower 1.2 celeron w/ 1GB RAM. Both running XP. I've tried both wired and wireless.

Speakeasy gives me 292 down and 615 up. Now, beyond the fact that it should be faster down than up, look how slow it is down,.

I've done all the tweaks etc I was on with tech support and they sent a tech today and unfortunately I wasn't home but my GF was. He checked the lines inside and out said there was no problem with the lines.

Using his faster laptop he got a decent 2800 down. When she plugged in her Asus netbook same thing. The tech said the slow speeds were due to the slow computers

Now I know that our machines aren't the fastest and I know that internet speed when it hits your machine is dependent upon cpu speed, but I know we shouldn't be getting such low speeds.

When I lived elsewhere and had cable internet, my current laptop got speeds close to what my cable company said I should be getting. So I am doubting the tech guy even even though the two other laptops got better speeds.

Anybody have any thoughts?

Hi. Im new to these forums but not new to Windows 7. Im a little obsessed with my internet connection speed at the moment and im running speed checks every hour or 2 and comparing the data to get a beter idea of busy hrs etc. What im looking for is a software to do this for me, i.e. do hourly speed tests and compile the data onto a spreadsheet, completley independent of user input. So basically I can get on with whatever im doing and this software will do the biz for me. Ive searched and cant find anything to suit my needs, but on the off chance that someone here knows of such a software I though id try my luck. Failing this I suppose i'll have to have a go at writing the program myself. lol. thanks for any input.

Hello Natt, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if either one of these free programs may be able to work for you for this.

NetWorx or Network Monitor

Hope this helps,
