Beginner's Book for Server Certificates?

Q: Beginner's Book for Server Certificates?

Hey all, as most I know a lot about some aspects of computers and there's a lot of stuff I don't know as well.
Server certificate issues have been coming up the past couple of years and wanted to learn more about them; like how to be able to discern bogus certs, how to write certs, how to over come cert errors when trying to send mail, etc etc
I'm looking for a 'for Dummies' like book focused soley on certs (or covers certs thoroughly); I really don't want an expensive phone book covering the entire Windows OS or Servers in general.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Preferred Solution: Beginner's Book for Server Certificates?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi. I'm looking for a good C# 2008 book that teaches programming but not teaches to memorize examples. The book must covers C#'s statements syntax & teaches from beginning.

I found one book with these features: "Beginning Microsoft Visual C# 2008" by Wrox/Wiley.

What about "C# 3.0: A Begginer's Guide" by McGraw Hill?

Can you introduce me well-structured book?

Hi All,
I will be deploying ATA 1.6 in our dev environment in the coming weeka and just needing a bit of help clearing up some detail with the "how-to" aspect of certificate generation. The environment I will be installing into is AD based with it's own
CA, so I won't be looking to use the self signed certs (unless someone can give me a good reason otherwise) and am wanting to get the certs provisioned from our own internal CA.
1. IIS certificate is easy, no problems here as I've done quite a few.
2. The Server Authentication template does not seem to be enabled within our environment, so I cannot use the Advanced Certificate Request form from the web portal as I can for the IIS CSR. I looked at generating a Server Authentication Certificate from
the certificates MMC, however I am getting lost under the Certificate Enrollement Policy page as policies configured by my administrator do not include a Server Authentication type.
I am getting the feeling I am going to need to either (a) get the Server Authentication template enabled or (b) generate a certificate template to facilitate this request. In either case I will need detail on what exactly is needed and why to get anything
like this approved. Can anyone help with more detailed/specific instructions on what needs to be done to generate the certificate here?
I guess the other option would be to use our internal CA for the IIS cert (trusted by all in the domain) and then use self signed for the ATA Center... Read more

The previous VeriSign 128-bit International (Global) Server Intermediate certification authority certificate expired on January 7, 2004. This may cause problems for clients that try to establish server-authenticated secure socket layer (SSL) connections with Web servers and other SSL/Transport Layer Security (TLS)-enabled applications that do not have up-to-date certificates.

To prevent these problems, Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) operators should contact VeriSign to update the intermediate certification authority certificates for servers that use 128-bit SSL to connect to Web sites with the Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol.

My company has a client that's running Windows Server 2003 in his office. For legal reasons, we can't support his server for him, only the application that we installed on his server. Server maintenance has to come from his 3rd party people. I'm just curious though.

This application of ours connects to a secure site that our company maintains. Every couple weeks, the application stops logging in to our website and he calls us to get it fixed. We Webex to his server and always see the same error. We found that if we open up IE and enter the web address in the address bar, we get a prompt for the certificate. Our application doesn't have the ability to answer this "Yes", "No", "View Certificate" prompt. So we go through the process of installing the certificate. After that, the app works flawlessly for a couple weeks before he calls us again. It's stopped logging in. After we browse to the site and install the certificate again, everything's fine. He's nice but he's tired of having to call us everytime this expires.

He's the only client out of about 1900 that has this problem. He's also the only one AFAIK that's running our app on Server 2003. I've seen Server 2003 but only have about a week's training experience with it. What kind of settings can I have this guy's support team look for on the system to keep this certificate from disappearing every couple weeks? No one uses t... Read more

I am trying to replace the auto generated self-signed (Issued to DM, issued by DM) certificates for the HDPM Server and Master Repository.  I am NOT refereeing to FTPS, the HPDM Embedded HTTPS Server, or the Thin Client Agent certs.   I have already setup certs from our own domain internal CA for FTPS in IIS and the Apache Embedded HTTPS server.  These are working fine and Repository tests pass for both protocols.  I have also issues to the Thin Clients from our internal CA just fine. I'm interested in the actual HPDM Server cert and Master repository cert. These are self-generated when the two services start up.  They use a very weak MD5 hash and RSA 1024 key.  I cannot find any documentation around this except for troubleshooting in which you can delete these certs restart the services and they will be regenerated.   Here are the certs\key paths%HPDM Install Path%\MasterRepositoryController\Controller.crt (Repository Cert)%HPDM Install Path%\MasterRepositoryController\Controller.key (Repository Key)%HPDM Install Path%\MasterRepositoryController\Client.crt (HPDM Server Cert)%HPDM Install Path%\Server\Bin\hpdmskey.keystore (Both HPDM Server and Repository Certs and Keys)(Not sure the format it is in.  It's not PEM and ok P12 as far as I can tell) There is also %HPDM Install Path%\Server\bin\hpdmcert.key.  Not sure what this is.  Think it?s the HPDM Server key but deleting it does nothing and it is ne... I was wondering if it's possible configure a Windows 2019 IIS v10 hosted Web Server to perform OCSP checking of client certificates that are used to authenticate?

It is my understanding that typically the Responder URL that the Web Server contacts in order to validate the client cert is extracted from the AIA attribute in the client certificate. But is it possible to override/supplement this with an additional Responder?

For instance, what if I set up an OCSP Responder in the same domain as the Web Server and associated its revocation configuration with the SUB CA binded to the IIS Site. Now if client certs come in for authentication  and have an unrelated OCSP Responder
in their AIA, can I somehow tell the Web Server to check also the aforementioned Responder that has been stood up in the domain?

A:OCSP Based Validation for Client Certificates Using Responder Defined by Web Server

Per a reply from Mark B. Cooper at PKI Solutions this is indeed possible. You must edit the following GPO in order to override the default behaviour of the web server which is to only check the Responder URL specified in the client certificates' AIA extension.
Default Domain Policy > Computer Configuration >  Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > expand Public Key Policies
Once a custom Responder is specified in the CA / SUB CA's revocation properties the above GPO will allow it to check that custom Responder URL first, then ocsp as defined in the AIA extension and then CRLs
Thanks Mark!
Will post reference links once MS verifies my account.

I'm totally new to Winmx and all these tabs that I see are very overwhelming. Let's say I search for the group "bad company"...what do I do next? There are soo many things to click on like download selected files, manually resume selected files, ping successfully, etc. What does all these tabs mean? I know NOTHING about winmx. And when I transfer music, where do I put my music? Do I make another folder from "my music" folder? Could someone please give me some tips.

A:A beginner on Winmx and I do mean a beginner

Hello. More problems with WinMX. When you log onto WinMx and the light goes green, click on search in the top bar. One the left had side, type in the name of the artist whose songs you want to download. On the 2nd line, you can type in a particular song (but the site will only search for this song, otherwise leave it blank). Then click on SEARCH box that is about 1/3 of the way across from where you typed. In a few secords the page will load up with songs from the artist you selected. Scroll down to where you see a song you want to download. Right click on the song, click download in the box that appears. You will be taken to Transfers and the connection process will begin. If the site chosen has a download available, it will begin. If not you will be queued, meaning you will wait in line to download from that site. (a note: I usually download at 128 bks because it takes less disc space than 160 or above) Go back to SEARCH and repeat for additional songs. I presume you have a folder "My Music". This should be where your songs go. You can set up new folders within this file. I have mine renamed by the Artist. The rest of the info will come with time. I suggest you go back thru this forum and read all the threads about WinMX. Am sure this will help. Then post back with what you have accomplished and then we can help you with further info with the other items that you have questions about. Hopefully, this will get you started. Gary

I exported my address book from Outook 2003 into the Windows (XP) Address Book. This is great because then I don't have to have Outlook open to view my address book.

However, it isn't linked to my Outlook address book so that whenever I made a change to my addresses in Outlook, it'll reflect in the Windows address book.

I had that set up perfectly in my old computer (Windows 98SE) but can't get it to work in XP.

More time has passed since I last needed help and now that I do, where do I turn? Here for the word on the street!

Hope someone can help me out with this one...

I want to make some of my organisations websites SSL encrypted. We're using Windows NT4.0 SP6a with IIS 4 installed and the site is being accessed using combinations of IE5 through to IE6.

I have achieved SSL on the desired pages using a certificate generated here from one of our W2K servers. However, when users access the site, they get a message saying the certificate is from an unknown Certificate Authority. If they install the certificate, sometimes the problem goes away, sometimes when they return it re-appears.

So, what I want to know is:
is it possible for us to issue our own certificates that will not be flagged up as a possible security issue to users;
if not, how, after installing the certificate on the users PC, can we stop being asked to install it again in the future when the same message pops up; and
if both of the above are not possible, will buying a certificate from a 'proper' CA stop the message appearing all together? If so, why? Does IE automatically assume they are ok?
Can anyone help me out?

Many thanks

I've been seeing the following message in Event Viewer:
When asking for client authentication, this server sends a list of trusted certificate authorities to the client. The client uses this list to choose a client certificate that is trusted by the server. Currently, this server trusts so many certificate authorities that the list has grown too long. This list has thus been truncated. The administrator of this machine should review the certificate authorities trusted for client authentication and remove those that do not really need to be trusted. So I go to look at my list of trusted root certificates, and indeed there are 312 of them. I presume that some of them are autoinstalled by Windows Update, some of them were there all along, and so on. Most of them are from places I've never heard of, such as "VRK Gov. Root CA" or "EBG Elektronik Sertifika Hizmet Sağlayicisi." Moreover, 36 of them have expiration dates in the past.

Is there a guide somewhere that explains how to go about cleaning up this list? In particular, is it always safe to delete any certificates that are past their expiration dates?

A:Too many certificates!

My Name is Kaushal and I work for Dell social media and community at Dell.
Well if we talk about Event Viewer, It’s the list of error reported in windows, whether the update have been installed properly or not.
However there is no problem deleting the list because it's just an overview of action which computer is taking to resolve any reported errors.
and just to inform you ,There are no guide which have been made to Delete these error from Event viewer.

I've searched for a similar thread, without success. I've recently been getting this error message in Event Viewer:Failed extract of third-party root list from auto update cab at: <http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/authrootstl.cab> with error: A required certificate is not within its validity period when verifying against the current system clock or the timestamp in the signed file. When I click on the link, I get a file called "authroot.stl" - a certificate file. If I then extract the file, I get a Certificate Trust List, at the head of which is: "This Certificate Trust List is not valid. The certificate that signed the list is not valid." Clicking "View Signature" for each entry in the list results in "The certificate is not valid for the requested usage."I'm sure that this means something to someone, but - to me - it might just as well say "wibble." What's going on here, could anyone tell me, plus how to do something about it, please? TIA! Ray

I have posted this question in the Outlook and Exchange forums and received few replies and no real information.
I also posted it in the Windows 7 forum for email and communications, and a Microsoft Support Engineer suggest that I post the question here.

We have a few 32-bit Windows 7 machines left in our environment, and several of them have an odd problem when it comes to email encryption.
In Outlook, in the Change Security Settings dialog box (Go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Email Security > Settings), when you click either one of the
Choose buttons, the Select a Certificate dialog box is empty, even though an email encryption certificate with valid dates is installed on the machine.
For some users, this prevents them from being able to send encrypted emails.

I know this can happen if the certificate does not contain a private key, but I have confirmed that the private key is present on all the affected machines.

The only way that I have been able to reproduce this behavior is to export a certificate from a 64-bit machine, and import it on to a 32-bit machine.
I believe that in the past some administrators requested certificates from the CA using their 64-bit machines, and then installed them on 32-bit machines, but I cannot verify that for certain.

If I take the email encryption certificate from the user's 32-bit machine and install it on a 64-bit machine, not only is i... Read more

Some questions/issues about security certificates when using IE 6 on Windows 98:

1. Are all certificates viewable? I went to a site that had some personal information of mine (my old University) and clicked on the Certificate icon in the lower-right hand corner? I could see that my ISP was active but my machine locked up when clicking on the locked icon. (The reason why I did this was because on older versions of I.E and Netscape you could find out the type of certificate it was, the expiration date and other security information.) I recall that I.E would tell you the level of security based on your settings but I couldn't get to it in I.E 6

2. When I signed in to Amazon.com and click on the SSL icon lock, it says...."This type of document does not have a security certificate" (even though the lock is there)

Can web designers prevent certificates from being viewed? Is this an issue with I.E 6, the design of a site, (There are added security features with I.E 6) or a conflict with I.E 6 and Windows 98? How can you be sure a security certificate is still good?

Does anyone know what is supposed to happen when you click on the SSL encyription lock in I.E 6?

Do not delete Certificates!

Windows uses them for security reasons via file encryption, network password info, also for IE browser security. Also basically saying who you are on your computer a personal key like having a key to your house or safe.

It is recommended to leave them intact.

Hi there,

Struggling to get Certificates to work on Win8 for https login to my NAS.
With https enabled on NAS I keep getting the Red https splash security page on both IE and Chrome.

Followed the instructions to generate/edit the Certificate from the NAS (produces new cert timestamp of Feb 2016).
Instructions in NAS docs say I should import this and allow the manager to automatically choose the appropriate certificate folder.
This I do and it puts the certificate into the "Intermediate Certification Authorities" folder by default.

Contacted the NAS company and they don't know why it won't work, as I have followed their documented instructions.

Any help appreciated.
