Sound is not working on laptop. Drivers updated, still not working.

Q: Sound is not working on laptop. Drivers updated, still not working.

I have a dell inspiron n4010

Basically the sound doesn't work unless its in a hdmi or headphones. It won't play sound out of the laptop itself. I've updated the drivers and checked the bios, and it seems to be enabled. What can be the problem?

Preferred Solution: Sound is not working on laptop. Drivers updated, still not working.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Sound is not working on laptop. Drivers updated, still not working.

Digital Audio (HDMI) Is the standard Windows driver for sound. You need the realtek drivers which can be found here - http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/uk/en/ukdhs1/Product/inspiron-14r

Download the driver (listed under audio).
Make sure the on-board audio is on in the bios, disconnect from the internet, uninstall all sound drivers and reboot.
Install the driver you downloaded and reboot.

An then reconnect to the internet. (This prevents Windows from reinstalling the Digital Audio HDMI before you can install the correct audio drivers).

Post back and let us know how it goes

Why did Dell say you needed to update drivers? Did you call them? Were these updated drivers for Audio (sound) or some other function?

I was having problems with Windows Themes and aero not working, and finally fixed that by updating drivers. The themes problem is fixed but now I cannot display my laptop on my TV through the HDMI port. Any ideas?

Update: When I push the connect button, the screen goes black like it always does when first connecting, and then I get the pop up saying I'm not using the resolution for the clone displays configurations, like it used to do before the update. I've tried rebooting, and also disconnected and connected the hdmi cable from my adaptor and still nothing.

So recently the sound on my desktop and my laptop has stopped working. For seemingly no reason. I really don't understand it.

I first noticed it with my desktop. The sound just randomly stopped working. But not...entirely. It's really strange and complicated what's been happening, so bare with me while I try to explain it as best I can.

First time sound stopped working on PC. Restarted computer, sound came back, no issues.

Second time I woke up to find VLC frozen. Sound wasn't working. I restarted VLC. No sound. Found out that there was no sound on the computer at all. When I'd try to increase the volume on VLC, it would only change within an interval of ten percent. So it was at 50 percent initially. Would not let me go below 50%, but not above 10%. Sound didn't work anyway. Restarted, sound returned VLC working fine.

Third time I was playing Dragon Age: Inquisition. Sound worked fine, using my headset (Turtle Beach). Went to speakers to lay down and watch some shows on VLC. No sound on speakers. Switched to Turtle Beach again, sound returned. Restarted VLC, now suddenly no sound on VLC OR speakers. Had to restart computer, no issues after restart.

First time sound stopped working, used the "disable audio and reenable audio driver," didn't solve anything. Restarted, sound came back. Sound stopped working again same day, restarted, sound came back.

The next time I restarted the audio driver (Realtek) and then I shut down Explorer and then restar... Read more

A:Sound on Laptop and Desktop Randomly Stops Working and Working

Update: I'm not at home to test my PC, but I think I discovered the issue. It seems to possibly be a glitch or something with flash player.

After watching an episode of Daily Show on Hulu, I went back to Tumblr and saw that a video didn't have sound, and then all sound on my computer was suddenly gone. I then tried something out, and shut down flashplayer. That temporarily brought sound back.

But it quickly went away.

Then I shut down Firefox and flash player entirely, and sound comes back even when Flash Player comes up.

What could cause this?

I have HP G60-530US.I read all the posts that talked about updating the BIOS and then doing a hard reset by taking the power cable out and talking out the battery out and then either hitting the power button for 1 minute or just leave the computer for several minutes. Many people seems to have solved their problems.  Not me.I updated the BIOS and also did the hard reset like 10 times.  What other options are there?I have Windows 7-64bit.  This problem occured after I did the 4/11/13 or 4/12/13 windows updates. The power button, wifi button and the mouse on/off buttons are the only ones that seems to be working.

Hi, as stated in the subject, I am unable to hear any sound from my speakers since upgrading to the windows 7 64 bit. I followed the other post that I found on this but I still cannot hear any sound.

I have a dell inspiron 531. The hardware ids from the device manager are

I have installed the realtek drivers and they as working but I still get nothing but a slight hiss from my speakers. I have tried them on my laptop and they work fine.

Does anybody know what might be causing this? I am half tempted to get a new sound card but I am reluctant as it says my existing one is working (it just seems to have forgotten to tell the speakers!)

If anybody knows a fix for this I really would be eternally grateful

Many thanks

A:Sound card drivers show as working but still no sound

Let's start by right clicking the speaker icon in your system tray and select playback devices from the options...right clik on the speakers and set as default. You can select to disable the independent headphone jacks if the speakers are plugged to the sound card. Then clik on properties and go to the levels tab at top. Set the slider to 100%. Go back to the playback devices window and select Configure button. Test the individual speakers by clicking on them one at a time.

I've been without sound for about 3 months now, and have been trying everything to get it to work again. I've downloaded a bunch of crap that did nothing without making me pay some fee for a one time use only. I've looked at other posts with the same type of problem and tried to fixes posted there, but it still wont work, and it says the drivers and hardware are all working properly. Appreciate any help I can get in this matter and will be checking back regularly.

A:No sound at all, says drivers are working right

All I know is that its an MDG computer, anything you can tell me to help you would be appreciated. I don't really understand anything too technical, so please try not to say anything without laymans terms, lol. FYI the sound went out when I was deleting a bunch of old apps and games I never used anymore, idk if I accidentally deleted a driver or something. And I've used driver cleaners but I don't exactly have the money to pay for the full version, and it would only clean like maybe 15-20 files. And I've checked to make sure nothing is muted lol. Any time I go into he sound device window, everything is faded out.

I have had this problem before and I fixed I just don't remember how.
I'm working on an old computer and when I installed windows 7 for the 1st time on it, windows 7 installs all the drivers auto and it's wrong drivers and the sound doesn't work, I need to know how to disable windows 7 from installing the drivers auto and uninstall the old ones so I can fix it.
Thank You

A:sound not working at all drivers

Start > right-click My Computer > Manage > Device Manager.
Right-click the device that needs a driver change > Properties.
From there you can uninstall or search for a different driver.

Windows shouldn't be installing drivers without you being able to do anything at all, though. Usually the "Found New Hardware" dialog box opens up and asks if you want Windows to do something about finding & installing the driver, or if you want to ignore & cancel.

I have just formatted my system and reinstalled Windows XP with SP2. After doing that I installed the motherboard (Abit NF7-S v2.0) drivers from the CD, including the sound drivers, however when it gets to the sound part it asks for the Windows CD which it has never done on previous reinstalls, and even when I put the CD in it can't find the files it wants, which include files such as ksuser.dll, ksproxy.ax, wdmaud, sysaudio and a few others. So I manually grabbed these files off the CD and put them in a folder, directed the install program to the folder and the install finished fine.

However the sound is still not working. If I go into Sound & Audio Devices it says "No Audio Device" and if I go into the Hardware section and click on the Nvidia Nforce Audio, it says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. Code 39."

I've downloaded the latest drivers from the Abit website but still get the same problem. I have tried removing the hardware and reinstalling it multiple times.

Any ideas?

Hey guys, I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Prof 32bit, after installing it I relised I can't get surround sound with my onboard sound like I was able to with XP. I went out and bought be a genius 5.1 surround sound PCI card.

Now the thing is...before installing the genius drivers, Should I first unstalled the drivers that came with win7 and if i should how do I go about doing that.

I installed it thow, but at the moment when I enable 5.1 sound in my controle pannel only the front speakers work while playing music through WMP, I do however get surround sound in games and dvds, to get sound through all the speakers I have to select stereo sound again in the controle panel.

When I make any changes on the sound program provided by genius nothing happens. Think there might be a driver clash or something.

Please HELP.....

I just bought a brand new hard drive the other day, with a new xp cd.

XP home installed perfectly, or so I thought. No sound will play, whether it be from an mp3/video/cd. The soundbar moves, but nothing comes from the speakers.

I went to add new hardware and found these drivers were not installed;

Multimedia audio controller
Video controller(VGA Compatible)

I followed the steps to install them but no drivers were found. I thought they should be on the XP cd? The sound was working perfectly on previous installations, XP and SuSe, yet not on this.

The only sound card is what came with my package and has never been upgraded/changed.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Just installed XP and sound not working.(drivers)

If they are not on the XP Installaion disc ( and that is not too uncommoe ) you can go to the motherboard manufacturers website and download the drivers for the video and sound card.
Actually, if it is nVidia or ATI . . you can download their drivers and be that much better off.

You probably need to uninstall the newer drivers first to re-install the older ones.
They should show up in add/remove programmes for you to uninstall, either named as such or as windows updates (identifiable by numbers) you can remove.

Last week my sound randomly went out. It does not work and when I try to click the speaker in the lower right hand corner (which has a red x on it) i get an error message that said "The audio Service is not working."

I ignored the problem. Now I am trying to print. When I plug in my printer where it usually automatically loads, now it does not. when I tried to print I get a prompt saying no printers are installed. when I try to install the printer i get an error saying the print spooler is not running.

I made the mistake of leaving windows update on automatic. When i left it audio was working fine, during the night it updated and i lost the ability to detect my on board audio.

ok here is a list of what i have already done so far, not in any sequence other than what i could remember. I also have tested after each change.

Installed all non-directly audio related Motherboard drivers
Installed realtek HD audio drivers
Installed Microsoft UAA driver
Installed AC97 audio drivers
Checked bios to make sure was enabled
Checked seveices.msc to make sure was active
Applied the updated KB888111 update (UAA driver) from microsoft
Uninstalled SP3
reinstalled SP3
removed all removable devices from device manager and redetected
Tried to add devices manually (ac97 / uaa)

As it stands atm i have no conflicts device manager (no (!)'s )

on board sound is enabled in bios

when I tried add ac97 / uaa drivers manually the dont auto detect and when I navigate to them via the have disk button, i am able to find the INF file but once i select it, the device list is blank. ( It is worth noting that although i was unable to add any devices i can change the realtek drivers to the AC97/UAA driver but in both casses return an error 10 (failed to start) in device manager. So i can atleast be sure they are on the system).

Make sure that you have not turned off your nic or sound by some fn key combonation. For your sound make sure it is not muted.
What do you mean by the USB ports have failed?
Will USB items are not being detected?
What USB devices are you connecting to your laptop?

Okay now before I start I will have to say this started with a rather irritating problem. One day my monitor just turned into save mode when I was using this. Since I could not get one reaction out of it I had to restart. When I restart it a new problem showed itself. Broken verticle lines of varying colors on my bios and start up of my pc. When Windows XP was loading it had even more lines some and then the monitor going into power save mode. Since then I started it into safe mode and it worked but I could not resolve the problem.

So in an attempt to fix it I reformatted to try and fix the problem. For a moment I thought it worked since I could go into Windows XP normally, but sadly it seems that the problem may be more than I thought. Since then I found out I can't update my graphics card or sound card drivers. When ever I try I get the message that "access is denied" with an yellow exclamation mark next to both of them. Also the reformat did not rid my computer of the broken lines in my bios and when windows xp is loading.

Now I am not sure what caused this in the first place or if I simply did not install certain drivers correctly. I am in need of some guidance here since I do not know what to do.

My computer is a Dell XPS Gen 4 service tag is 5FC2771
Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3
Graphics card - Nvidia Geforce 6800
Sound card - Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS (WDM)

If I left anything out that could help resolve this please let me know.

a few days ago, after a restart of my PC, I didn't get any sound at all, and still dont get it.
all my drivers are apdated, realtek, motherboard drivers, graphic driver...
i've tried uninstalling and reinstalling realtek driver and software
and - as you can see in the picture -
windows media player is playing a song. in the "sound" menu (top left), the speakers (defined for realtek hd audio) are also working, the geen bars go up and down. in the device manager (down left) i have realtek driver, updated. and all nvidia drivers (as it always been, and also i checked another pc and has it too). realtek manager works fine, recognize when i plug into the front or the rear jack (using the green one at the rear), everything seems ok. but (!) the "volume" menu (down right) doesn't have a green bar that goes up and down, and - I dont hear any sound at all...
tried connecting speakers to iphone - the speakers are fine, works well.

what can i do now?

This is a long story people so bare with me. Just the other night a program on my ASUS Laptop called 'ASUS Live Update' recommended a few updates for my PC. I allowed the update, and once it was finished downloading all of the updates, it prompted me to restart my PC, so i did. When my laptop loaded up again it said that the update for my USB drivers did not install correctly, and from that point forward, NONE of my USB devices were working anymore. My PC would no longer recognize any USB device that i connected to my computer. I did some research and tried re-installing the drivers, but that didn't work. I tried Microsoft Fix It, that didn't work either. So i called up ASUS and they made me try a few things, and that didn't work either. After I tried everything, they said there is no other solution they can give, but to have me send in the Laptop for repairs, and they want to charge me $150 to get this fix, when it was their program that initially messed up my drivers. If somebody could please help me fix this, i am in desperate need. Thank you so much. -DJN

The touchpad on the laptop I'm using isn't working properly. Since my old computer died I plugged in the monitor and the (MS) optical keyboard and mouse so we could all use it like a normal computer rather than a laptop. I did this on monday, and as far as I can tell for the first day or so both the touchpad and the mouse worked, as well as both keyboards. However, now the touchpad won't work whatever we do. We have tried:
-Unplugging all external mice and restarting the computer
-Disabling external mice (haven't tried this with restarting, but don't think it makes much difference)
-Using System Restore to revert any changes up to Sunday (before when the other keyboard/mouse was plugged in)
-Uninstalling drivers for the touchpad and allowing the laptop to self-detect (which takes two restarts - one for uninstalling the drivers, and one for finalising installation)
-Opening the BIOS and restoring the default settings (by the way, I was unable to find any touchpad-looking setting in the BIOS, but I wasn't sure if there would be one)

I didn't install any software for the external optical stuff. We also have just a single optical mouse that we only use for the laptop, and it has never caused us problems like this. I haven't installed any software in the duration, and System Restore should have reverted any changes in any case. What may we have overlooked in fixing it? Some have suggested that the only thing to do may be to rip every... Read more

A:Laptop touchpad not working - Drivers? IRQ error? Something else?

take a look in device manager to make sure there are no little yellow !'s. Windows will detect the touchpad as a genric ps/2 mouse, but to make it work properly you'll need to get the actual driver from your laptop manufacturer's website, what brand is it?

I updated my audio drivers as per windows update because I noticed I had some new updates. Well now my speakers are not as loud as they used to be. I really don't know a way to describe this other then that, they just do not sound like they used to. They sound like they are not reaching their maximum volume, even though the volume ( master and others ) are all the way up, maxed out. Also, my Dell and the Audio drivers come with an IDT control panel, I do not know how to set up the IDT control panel for best playback, and I do not know how to fix this issue. I am on a Dell XPS 1645 using Windows 7 Pro, any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Updated drivers, no sound does not work properly

The problem is that Windows update is not the best way to update drivers. Quite often the windows update drivers for hardware cause problems.Try this. Right click on Computer then properties. Now on the left hand side choose Device manager. Find Sound Video and Game controllers, expand it by double clicking on it. Find the IDT sound card, right click on it. Choose properties, then Driver. select Roll Back Driveror go to http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriversHome/NeedProductSelectionEnter your service tag from the bottom of the laptop in the Service tag box. Click Submit. The choose the Operating System and the IDT audio drivers, Download them and install them.Either one should work.Roger

Hello! As the title says, I updated the drivers (using DriverScanner) and my computer now has no sound.

I wanted to play the remastered Grim Fandango, which wouldn't work because it needed Open GL to run, and was told that DriverScanner would solve the problem. It did - partly. The game is now running - but there's no sound. In fact, there's no sound anywhere on the system. Which in this day and age is a nuisance.

Display adapters:
NVIDIA GeForce G210

Sound, video & game controllers:
HP Webcam Splitter
NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (Wave Extensible) (WDM)
Realtek High Definition Audio

As far as I can tell, everything seems to be working; the computer says that both Realtek and NVIDIA are working properly.

A:Updated drivers (including Realtek) - now no sound

My advice is two fold:
First use system restore to go back to good times. You will have sound again.
My second piece of advice, stop using software to do the updating. Get the best drivers, by going to the website and updating. Nothing done the easy way is the best.
Finally, there is no valid reason to be sure your drivers are always up to date, if not broken do not fix it.

Hi, laptop was working fine one minute, then next time i switched it on, the sound was stuck on mute. Went to device manager and look clicked on "sound, video and game controllers". All the devices are there, but when clicked on, eg Intel Display Audio or IDT High Definition Audio CODEC, this error code appears under device status:

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

Not sure what to do. Might be problem with drivers?? All help appreciated

What's the complete model number of that dv6 series laptop? The complete model number will have a dash and additional characters after "dv6".

Also advise what the part/product number(P/N) on it is.

Is it running Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit?

I was doing some Spring Cleaning on my laptop under Control Panel >
Add or Remove Programs. I removed some things that I never used and then I went to
Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. After this was completed, NO sound came out of my speakers on my laptop. As a matter of fact, the little icon for volume control no longer appeared in my tray
at the bottom of my desktop.
I searched for the volume control and when I tried to bring it up through Accessories > Entertainment > Volume Control, a pop-up window came up and read:
There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices,  go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware. This program will now close.
My sound card is IDT High Definition Audio CODEC. So after I attempted to Troubleshoot this problem and re-install my hardware, it did not complete the installation process and told me:
Here is the current status of the hardware you selected: The device cannot start. (Code 10)
So, each Troubleshooting I go through, I cannot fix this issue and it will not launch the sound at all. What can I do? Have I destoryed any chance of getting the sound back in my laptop? I have Windows XP.

Hello, everyone. First timer here, needing some advice on what to do.
So last week I was having some issues with my audio. MP3 and MP4 files refuse to work, VCL files play but are all dead silent, YouTube videos longer than 20 seconds don't go past the 0:00 mark (the short ones, like VCL, remaining silent), and by Friday not even adjusting the volume on my computer produces sound. Skype also can't seem to access my sound card, and for a long while I considered that would be the case.
So recently this week, I took a friend's advice and checked out BleepingComputer for a program to get rid of a malware bug, as he thinks this might be the case. It turns out, thanks to MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, I had a trojen and a few other malwares lurking about. So, U had them removed. A restart later, and everything was working at last!
That is, until I used the laptop for a few hours later. And the issues came back; all of them. Now I'm actually starting to think it IS an issue with my sound card. Which means I'm going to have to lose some savings in order to buy and have inserted a new one...
Is there a way to fix this without having to lose an arm and a leg? Not even my friend was sure on what to do. Please, any help and advice would be GREATLY appreciated.
I am using a ACER Aspire, which I got four years ago.

Hi I recently bought a 2nd hand (4week old) acer e1 571. It originally had Win 8 installed, It is now running on Win 7 sp1 (afaik) with all the latest updates installed. This is why it has not just been brought back to the shop where it was purchased.
My problem is that I cannot play audio through the laptops own speakers. When in a very quiet room you can hear faint crackling from the speakers when they are turned up fully. If you plug in headphones or hdmi, the either will work perfectly no problem with sound. I have the latest Realtek audio driver for my computer installed and I have spent the last week checking and re checking all of the sound settings. The computer says that the device is ''working properly'' when I troubleshoot it. Im beginning to wonder are the speakers shot?

A:New laptop, speakers not working with latest drivers installed?

Maybe that was why it was originally brought back - the speakers didn't work? Did they work when you first got it? If not, I would take it back.

Machine froze up and company's name and phone number as well as your Microsoft trusted Partners logo showed up. Paid the $186 to update my warrantee for one year and I allowed them access to entire system. They were to call me next month to check on my
system. And that is when they showed me all of my Microsoft devices were stopped and it would cost $1000 to fix. I said no thank you and did  clean recovery boot. But I cannot get any of my sound tools too work because they say they are missing a playback
device and there is something stopping my devices from loading. I am handicapped and rely on my sound system with the microphone either on my headset or in my Inspirion 14z. My system is out of warrantee. Is there anything I can do other than wait for a couple
months until I can save enough Social Security  to buy another system? Thank You in advance. Mark Martin Bedford Pennsylvania
