Q: Gateway connection issues - lots of information. Please help

Hi guys, I'm in bit of trouble with my connection right now. I have a Linksys 54G Wireless Router and Westell 6100 modem with Verizon DSL. The downstairs computer recieves connection through a LAN via the modem/router/ethernet and the two upstairs computers recieved a wireless signal. When trying to hook up my Xbox Live account, the IP fails because of trying to connect to BOTH the router and modem. I've researched the problem and found numerous solutions, which haven't worked, probably because I'm configuring something wrong. Anyway, I FINALLY got the Xbox Live IP to work, but the DNS test failed . The exact instructions I got to get the Xbox Live IP to work are found below..... The thing is, now when I followed these instructions, the downstairs computer is NOT connected to the LAN anymore, but rather an PPPOE (WAN Miniport). The two upstairs computers no longer have connection now.

IN A NUT SHELL: I got my Xbox Live IP to be found, the DNS fails (disabling me to play online), but I can only get the Live IP to work when the downstairs computer is connected through PPPOE and the two upstairs don't recieve any signals. When connecting the downstairs back to a LAN connection, it fails to connect to the internet. What I'm trying to ask advice for is... how would I go about setting up all my computers to work AND the Xbox Live to work as well. I've heard things like, "Bridge the connection", copy MAC addresses.... etc etc. Please help.

Here's the Instructions I used to get the Xbox Live IP to be found, but disabling connection to the home computers.

1. connect the modem's ethernet port to the internet port of your WRT54G router
2. connect the pc to the regular port 1 2 3 or 4 on the back of your router
3. turn off the modem, hold the routers reset button for 30 seconds then release it
4. restart the computer
5. access the routers setup page by opening internet explorer, then type - http://192.168.1.1
6. once youre prompted with a login, leave username blank password "admin"
7. go to MAC ADDRESS CLONE tab, enable this option, click CLONE YOUR PC'S MAC, then save settings
8. go back to setup tab, make sure internet connection type is set to - Automatic Configuration - DHCP
9. change the part where it says LAN IP address to 192.168.2.1
10.power off the router, then the computer for 1 minute
11. power on the modem first, then the router, lastly the computer (make sure you have the lights stable on the device before turning ON the next one...
12. try to get online after that

I recommend downloading and running Outlook PST Repair. It's a PST repair tool that I've used it in the past to recover emails, contacts, tasks and notes from corrupt Outlook files that are damaged or inaccessible. Supports Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/1bjhSi. (This link will automatically start a download of Outlook PST Repair that you can save to your computer.)

Actually, I'd consider bridging the 6100 to eliminate it's NAT layer, the real issue here is two NAT layers in the path.

Okay so here are my specs:

Motherboard: MSI P67A-C43 (MS-7673) version 1.0
CPU: i5-2500k
Video: Radion HD 6870 i believe, but i don't think relevant.

Problem:
One day, I don't know why, my computer stopped recognizing any sound devices. I have speakers plugged into back and headphones / microphone plugged into front.

I am not using a sound card, they are directly to motherboard.

For some reason, I am unable to install realtek hd audio drivers. My windows will automatically install AMD Audio drivers for some odd reason.

I have tried to disable automatic driver installation but no matter what, it will keep installing AMD audio drivers. Realtek won't even show up.

Please, any additional information or screen-shots needed, feel free to ask!

Thank you!

A:Sound issues w/ all lots of information. Please help.

What is displayed in the Device Manager for Sound and Audio Devices?

As you have an HD6870 video card, it has HDMI audio, and you should see an ATI audio entry in thye Sound and Audio Devices, which would be the video card's sound. You should also see another entry for the RealTek, if that is what is on the motherboard for audio. If the RealTek is not there but you see an entry for HD Audio that is a generic Windows installed sound card driver, and it should work but you won't have full features of the RealTek audio driver from the motherboard vendor (MSI).

If there is no other sound device showing, check the BIOS to verify the audio is enabled in the BIOS. If it were disabled it wouldn't show up. If its enabled in the BIOS, reinstall the Intel motherboard chipset drivers (use the MSI supplied or downloadable driver), if the motherboard chipset drivers are not installed or corrupted devices on the motherboard, such as the sound will not show up.

I've been through hell trying to get my computer to stop freezing. My computer is custom built (three years old) and it never had any freezing problems until about half a year ago. This is what I've done to try and cure the problem.

- Uninstalled IE and replaced it with Mozilla FireFox (this seemed to help a bit because Mozilla isn't using nearly as much memory to run the browser)

- Bought RegCure and regularly use it

- De-fragmented my C: drive

- Uninstalled any unnecessary programs and applications

- Recently updated my video drivers

This is the deal. When idle, my computer never freezes. I can leave it on all night/day, whatever and it won't freeze. It seems to lock up when I'm actually using the computer, mainly when I'm browsing on the internet or using media devices. For example, sometimes I'll download a video to watch or tamper with iTunes and the computer will randomly just lock up and I'll have to restart. Sometimes it will lock up constantly after restarting, then other times I can go hours without any problems. Now what else can I do!? Please help! My Hijack logs never get any responses, so is there anything I can do? Thank you.

Hi guys.

First I'd like to say this is probably going to be a long post with a lot of info, some of which I may forget to include. Also, I'm not exactly the biggest computer genius out there, so please have patience!

I built this PC around 3 months ago and it worked fine for around 1 week. After that, I would occasionally get this problem where the computer freezes (the screen completely stops) and can only be fixed by the power/reset buttons:
The screen stops completely, but no visual defects are caused.
The mouse stops moving. Clicking the mouse buttons does nothing.
The 'num lock' and 'caps lock' keys on the keyboard become unresponsive.
Sounds becomes very distorted, but if you listen closely you can still hear the sound being played very slowly.
No noticeable difference in the speed of the fans in the case before or after crashing.
Strangely, the animation the mouse makes when loading something (the blue circle) still works
No dump files are made.
The system does not start responding if I wait.

A lot has happened since then in terms of troubleshooting and discovery so I'll list everything in chronological order:
I ran multiple MemTests (MemTest: RAM reliability tester for Windows) overnight multiple times with no errors found.
Used my computer normally with 1 RAM stick at a time, then tried using both sticks but in different slots.
I did stress tests on my CPU and GPU with no errors or crashes caused.
I updated my mobo and GPU drivers.
Reseated my GPU.
I change... Read more

I have a Motorola SB5100 modem connected to a Netgear WGR614 v7 router. I then have my Xbox 360 and Desktop connected to the router. With this setup, there will be periods of time in which my internet will disconnect, but all the lights on both devices will stay lit. When I disconnect my Desktop from my router and plug it directly into my modem, and this issue appears, when I run the Network Troubleshooting on Windows 7 it tells me "The default gateway is not available."

This issue has been driving me crazy for the past few weeks now. I've placed multiple calls to my ISP and had several tech visits, all to no avail. I've also tried searching the internet for fixes, of which none worked. I have tried:

-Flushing DNS
-Manually setting default gateway in command prompt
-Unplugging my modem and plugging it back in
-Setting a static IP
-Turning off all TCP/UDP offload settings on my NIC
-Updating my NIC's drivers
-Removing and reinstalling my NIC's drivers
-Installing a NEW NIC, to no avail
-Replacing the modem
-Replacing the ethernet and coax cables
-Turning off IPv6

If anyone has had this similar problem and has advice/a fix, I'm open to suggestions. Attached is IPCONFIG and a HijackThis log.

Is this an ISP provided router, or your own??? If it is your router, try updating the firmware first... I didnt see that in the list of what you tried. If it is an ISP provided router... DEMAND A NEW ONE!

Did you reboot PC or release/renew IP after trying this switch? It sounds like maybe you didnt and the PC was looking for the router at the Gateway IP!

Okay, so I have a Toshiba Satellite with Window's Vista (purchased late last year). Recently my hard drive crashed so I sent it into Toshiba to be fixed. When it came back it had IE8 on it instead of IE7 (which I previously had). So, the first issue is that the screen is all washed out. It is completely white (I can see the ads in color and stuff but it looks different than normal). I checked the color settings and they are set to "windows colors".

Secondly, when I first logged into Yahoo it asked me to update my email. So I did. Big mistake. Now all of my buttons have a line going straight through them and I can't click on them at all (although I can still view my emails, just not send, reply, etc.)

The third issue is that I call Toshiba for help and since they couldn't help me they just set me up with Google Chrome. I'm not a fan. I want my IE back nice and normal.

Please help!

hi meridon, I had a look at the log file and it shows a bad block on the hard drive. Now, we do have a hard drive forum in the hardware section if you wish to post there. I can't tell just now if it is a large area of the drive that is bad or a bigger section. Are you able to get to your user account, because if you are now is the time to save any important documents, and quickly. I would repost in the hardware section as well, because the team there have programs they recommend. They may also recommend downloading the diagnostic program from the hard drive manufacturer's website, but I repeat if you can save your docs please do so now before trying diagnostics. If you repost in the other section link back to this thread, I will monitor though.

I don't know if this is a Vista problem or a hardware problem. Keep in mind all of this seemed to happen over night and at once. So I was visiting my family in New Hampshire. I got on a plane to come home and I put my laptop in the overhead compartment. Because it was to tall to stand it up I had to lay it flat. I'm pretty sure someone shove their bag on top of it and that may be the cause of the issue (or maybe have nothing to do with the problem lol). Anyways the next day I turn it on and vista took minutes to load (doesn't usually take more than a few seconds.) Then when it gets to the pick your user page, it took a good minute to load. Furthermore, when my profile finally logged on, Windows promted me with something like Windows Can't talk to a service please check your system log (next time I log on I'll do a screen shot.) When I looked at my services, the service in question appeared to be running. Then I check my system log and there was some error (error 13, don't remember what it said) that wouldn't let me view it. I read online how to clear it and I did. After I cleared it I could see the log so I figured next time I logged on, I'd see what the problem was. Well I log on again, and that error reappeared. I went to do a system restore, thinking maybe it would bring my system back to how it was before I got home, but got distracted and never did it. Later I went to do it again and my the last restore point it showed me was after the problem existed. Here's another... Read more

Hi everyone, sorry about my previous post I've read the new post topic now and I think I've got it right. So my issues seem to be caused by Internet Antivirus 2010 or something like that. There is another program that looks almost exactly the same that pops up sometimes. My task manager was disabled for a while until I found a run command online that would fix that problem. A lot of programs wouldn't open due to an error stating that the file was infected. I've uploaded a picture of what the virus does to my desktop, it's the problem1.jpg file in the attachments. I'm not sure of what viruses I have or their locations but I'm willing to take any steps to help the situation. I currently have an updated version of Avira Antivir installed. I previously also had AVG but I deleted it.

Hi. Ok let me run down how I want to set up. I have 3 computers. One upstairs (call this A) one downstairs with 2 nic's(call this B) and another one right beside B(call this C). I have my modem upstairs. It connects to a router. The router feeds A and B. I want to add C to the internet but because B is 40ft from the router and the cable runs in the floor, I can't simply attach C to the router. So I am looking to share B so that C can connect. I bought a crossover cable and connected B to C. I try to enable ICS but when I do I get the error "An error occurred while ICS was being enabled. ICS cannot be enabled. A lan connection is already configured with the IP address that is required for automatic IP addressing"

If I run the network setup wizard on B and C, nothing happens. Says it was done but still limited or no connectivity. I can't tell the wizard that B is directly connected to the internet because its not, Its connected to the router. Anyone know how I can get this sorted out? Im really racking my brain right now. Also, when I go into Local area connection settings and click advanced, I have no advanced settings besides the firewall settings. I have to uninstall file and printer sharing then reboot and reinstall it to be able to even click "Allow other networks to share this internet connection" thus when I do I get the above error. Then the advanced settings dissapear.
Thanks in advanced

Really confused.

Hi,
I am hoping someone can help me out with my problems. A couple days ago I started having issues with Firefox. When I tried to upload a photo or document in my webmail, Firefox would automatically close. Then any type of file I tried to upload would kick me out. This has since spread to Chrome and IE. I also can't start my system in Safe Mode, or access the registry without being closed down. I ran AVG but it didn't find anything and Adaware didn't either. I have a basic knowledge of computers so I would appreciate any help. Here is a hijackthis log. Thank you.

I'd like to be able to see the other computers and access them from corporate, however I only see the computers that are on this network. Am I missing something? Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Hey everyone!

So, my housemates and I get a message from roadrunner saying that someone's sending mass-emails. We do virus scans and find some trojans and "remove" them and then a few days later we get a message saying that we have to send proof that we fixed our computers. I really just want to see if i can fix mine here first!

Also, this laptop has a couple weird things wrong with it, One is that everytime i start it up normally I get a "Services.exe missing" error and it counts down to restart- But, if I start it up and hit F8 and tell it to run with 'the most recent settings that worked' - then it works just fine. - and that's the mode i'm in now and where this HJT log is comming from.

I no longer have my XP disks! lost at maybe my parents' house or through lots of moving. So if worst comes to worst and I have to reformat, is it possible to restore factory settings without them, and retain XP on my system? (It's the tablet edition, and I don't want to lose those tablet functions)

Okay, Im currently having a whole lotta issues with my laptop. I don't know if it is Virus's or Spyware that is causing the problems. I don't know if its just my computer acting up. Im not sure. So I wasn't really sure where I should post my question. If I posted in the wrong section, please forgive me.

Okay, well now that I think about it, I think all the problems may have started with a virus. Again, Im not really sure.
About a week or two ago I was playin on the internet like usual, and suddenly I got a pop up asking me if I want to execute some weird file called "setup (&it had a whole bunch of random numbers after it).exe
I said No of course. It happened maybe two more times, and each time I said No. Then suddenly it came up again and was gone and then some thing happened. My computer starts telling me that my hard drive was not found. Or that I had drive errors. And some Windows Defragment screen kept coming up saying I needed to defragment my computer. I kept trying to click off of it and it kept coming back up. I was uable to do anything on my computer at that point.
I usually do have Panda running, but Im having issues with that also. I actually purchased the Panda and for some reason I can not activate it. So i guess it wsnt doing its job that time.
So I think I finally got Panda to run and I have no clue what was found or what I did to make the defragmenter thingy stop.
So then I ran my spybot, hijackthis, and then I did a registry cleaner program. I u... Read more

A:I got lots of issues...I don't know where to begin..

I would restart the machine in "Safe Mode with Networking"; you can accomplish this by restarting your machine and tapping on the "F8" key until you get a boot options screen. After you select the above "MODE", you can log onto Administrator if given the option, otherwise go ahead and logon to your normal account. Then go here; Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.50.1 - FileHippo.com and download file, saving to your desktop. Once it is downloaded go ahead and install, and allow it to update, then run a full system scan, and go ahead and remove what it automatically selected. Reboot into regular mode if it asks you to reboot, I would then again run another full scan to make sure. Good luck

Hi...i'm not a "tech" guy but my system (Windows Xp home edition) started running super slow the other day. First it started with loads of popups from Outerinfo (and others)...then I accidentally downloaded and installed PC Doctor until I found out it is a spyware progam...so I then went thru the removal process. Now I have windows security popups in the taskbar and when I reboot it popsup on the screen as well (plus the blue background saying I need to install spware!)...I also have (when I'm connected to the internet) a Symantec email proxy popup warnings that cover my screen...and then the system turns off and trys to reboot itself. Total mess.

To date I have run (all in safe mode) SmitfraudFix, smitRem, CCleaner, RogueRemover, AVG Anti-spyware and SUPERAntispyware. All have founds issues and then supposedly cleaned them up but everytime I reboot in "normal" mode the problems are still there. Please help with suggestions...I'm willing to try almost anything w/o having to do full new install...files upon files on this pc.

Thanks.

Here's the problems I've been having with my computer in the past 2 days:

1. Whenever I restart the computer, I'm asked to log in (which I've never had to do before) and when I do log in, I have to manually run explorer.exe through Windows Task Manager as it's immediately closed when I reach my desktop.

2. I'm unable to connect to any online virus scanners like Panda or Kaspersky.

3. Firefox doesn't seem to load anymore, so I've had to go back to using Internet Explorer.

I've also had trouble using the DDS and GMER programs. When I try to use DDS.src, it asks me to choose from a list of programs to run it with, and I'm not exactly sure what I'm supposed to combine it with. And I've run GMER three times now, and each time, it freezes to a halt at the same point. I can post the results of the scan up until that point, and hopefully that helps:

Hi! I been having issues with this computer since day 1. I used a combination of spare parts from a gutted computer and a new mobo. I put everything together and things worked fine. For the most part, I know everything worked when it was on Windows XP from the gutted computer. I hooked everything up to a new GB mobo and there seemed to be no problems.

Fast forward to the Win 7 x64.... I have had nothing but BSOD on multiple occassions ranging from doing nothing to browsing the net to gaming. I have recently uninstalled AVG and Zipgenius and replaced them with Avira and 7zip.

I'm at the point where I want to chuck it out the window. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'll start out by saying I'm not the least bit technical, so please go easy on me here. I have a Compaq Presario CQ50 that was just purchased in November. About a week after we got it, I started getting the dreaded blue screen and it kept shutting down on me. Internet would also freeze. Went round and round with tech support, nothing they did ever seemed to fix the problem, but all of the sudden one day after an automatic Windows update, it was working fine. Fast forward a few months. Started getting some random issues over the last several weeks. Blue screen and Internet freezing again, then keyboard and touchpad stopped working. Tech support had me change some configuration settings in the BIOS and it started working again. The a couple days later, I turned on the system one day and was getting the "unable to start" error and it couldn't ever be fixed. Tech Support did a system restore that got me started, but lots of things were disabled that shouldn't have been and we couldn't get the Internet to work, so he recommended I back up and do a system recovery since something was obviously wrong. Did that, worked fine for about a day, then went to turn it on the other day and got the same "unable to start" again. This time, it was able to fix it and start. The only program I've added since the recovery was a webdesign program. Had it before as well. Thought I was in the clear, but now I keep getting the Blue Screen and it keeps restarting on me. Then today I... Read more

When facing multiple issues, it's generally a good idea to start with the most severe one first and then tackle whatever remains. The BSoD is the obvious place to start.

That "C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini042409-01.dmp" file referenced in the BSoD error contains info which may help someone explain the cause of your crash(es). If you copy that DMP file and any other recent files in the same location to a different folder, then zip them up and upload them here, it may be possible for someone to analyse them and tell you what led to the BSoD.

My computer I feel is badly infected. My son has a habit of clicking on anything on the internet (he's young) and likes to download free game trials. (which I delete quickly afterwards) Ever since this, our computer has been freezing up and the only way to turn it off is to unplug it. We plug it back in, and restart it and it's fine for a while then freezes again. It also is very slow booting up, and slow on the internet start up. I frequently lose the ability to click on my 'favorites' to the point where it won't show up at all. I get redirected often off of websites I'm visiting as well. I do virus scans several times a day, the same ones keep showing up, and I delete my browser cache and cookies often. I just finished defragmenting as well, and that did nothing to help the problems. I've had my laptop about two years now and I haven't had any problems with it until now. I'm able to turn it on and log into my windows account, but from there nothing works. When I get to the desktop screen, the cursor is visible and controllable, but it won't open anything. When I hover over a program, like google chrome, the cursor doesn't even change to the pointer icon, meaning nothing is even clickable. Additionally, the touchscreen isn't working, as well as the keyboard. I can't access the start screen, and even Ctrl+alt+delete won't work. I've tried forcing a shutdown and then restarting it several times, but it still renders the same results. Anyone have an idea of what might be causing this? I'm getting very frustrated.

Hello, a long time ago, I built a computer, and loaded 8.1 onto it. (I realize this was a mistake in retrospect.) Everything was fine until recently, when I tried to install an update to the .NET framework for an application I was running. NET wanted me to update windows to a version it was compatible with. I tried, to no avail, with the updates found in both the charms bar and the control panel. I tried manual updates, I checked the registry, I downloaded the Windows Update Troubleshooter, I even deleted all previous updates to attempt to reinstall all of them. Regardless, my update kept checking, and returning a 55kb update, which I would try to install, and fail. I also checked my update history, and found a large portion of the updates were failed, which also somehow contributed to this problem. I also am unable to update to windows 10, based on the same issues. Help?

A:Lots of 8.1 update issues

If you have the Windows 8.1 DVD, I would re-install. Of course, you will want to backup all your data - documents, photos, and favorites first and copy all the program setup exe's that you have downloaded.

For a new installation of Windows, I usually use WSUS Offline to download all critical updates and create an ISO file. Then I burn that ISO to DVD, and insert it into the machine being installed and run the installer program. This will get your machine updated without connecting to the internet. But you still need to do Windows Update afterwards to download the non-critical updates. WSUS Offline is here: http://download.wsusoffline.net/

OK I have been building PC's from Newegg and various local store for my family members, friends and Co-Workers. I am not a Programmer or anything of that caliber but i built at least 20 PCs over the past year alone, mostly gamer rigs. But this one, which so happens to be mine, keeps giving me alot of issues.

I built it originaly about a month ago, and after a few days got some file corruption messages and BSODs. Running MEMTEST 86+ it narrowed out the ram pretty fast 100,000+ errors in like 10 minutes of starting. Various timings changed the error count but was by far from STABLE. I RMA'd the RAM to Gskill. Recieve that about a week ago.

I since did a clean install with Windows 7 64Bit.
Mainboard: ASUS M4A79XTD EVO
RAM: G-Skill F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL 1600 MHz Ripjaw series. (2x2Gb)
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955BE
GPU: XFX GTX 260BE
PSU: 650 watt HEC-XpowerPRO

It passed a few hours of Memtest (3-4) so i began the fresh install. Everything worked fine for about a day.
Second Day I was playing Modern Warfare 2 game, and the game screen went Grey it rebooted after about minute or so and the CPU internal Speaker did the Pre-Post beeping to indicate no graphic card installed or what not.
I reset it manually with the front panel power switch and it boot fine. Windows report a Hardware failure, with the GPU. So i went and found a newer driver, i was using 195.6 or something and there was a 196.21 driver that just came out. I installed that.

So, recently I've been having lots of browser lag and search results and some other links redirecting me to ads and such.

First I'll mention that I don't know where anything would've came from but it started a few weeks ago. I hadn't been downloading anything really or browsing any shady websites, just kinda came to use my computer and it was happening. At first it was just some redirects from Google and such to different pages such as 'saerch.aol.com' and yellowpages and stuff which I didn't mind cause I could just copy and paste the URL and it'd be fine.

Eventually other links did it a bit too and then it got a bit irritating.

This whole time I'd been using Mozilla.

Now, today it started just not even loading some stuff, such as when I tried to download Spybot onto this computer and when I found a mirror, I couldn't patch from the website anyways. Some websites say I couldn't connect and such but I refresh and it's fine. It also goes extremely slow sometimes. I also tried using IE and Opera and all have the same issues.

It's not just my internet or anything because I use messengers and play online games with no lag or anything whatsoever.

Hopefully someone here can help me. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi...I use Crapcleaner a lot, to help clean up a lotta 'stuff' on my computer. But, I've found, after using it, and I shut my computer off for the day, when I turn it on again, I lose my DSL information and have to go thru my DSL server to get reconnected. Each time, my username, etc has dissapeared. The Crapcleaner is the only thing I can think has 'taken' it off my computer. What can I do to avoid this in future? And, is there anything any better than Crapcleaner to do what it does on my machine? I'm a Senior Citizen, and self taught on computers. As such, I need to know what to do in common laymans language, please.

id' like to get back the same information that UsbTreeView returns but via console so that i can write an automated script that calls the powershell command like below.

Hi everyone, I joined the board in hopes that someone could help me out.

I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop and for the past month or so I have been having a problem with the stand by and hibernate modes. Whenever it goes into either mode it cannot recover and I have to turn it off by pushing the power button.
I thought I had a solution by changing a setting so that it does not change to hibernate or stand by but now if I leave my laptop idle for too long it just becomes unresponsive and again I have to shut it off manually.

So if I leave it for too long I can't do anything. It just shows whatever screen it was left on and I can't do anything.

Any help about how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

A:Toshiba Laptop: Lots of issues

Has it been set to turn off the hard disks and stuff? The Toshiba management console has power options where you can set the time after which if the laptop is idle, it will turn your hard disks and screen off. Maybe that is the case? Check it out and report back.

Ok, so I recently brought my computer back to life after some major issues. It is still having a slew of problems and I can't seem to fix them. I am running windows XP with SP3 installed. Firstly, I started having a problem where when i started up my computer, sometimes the monitor would turn into an orange, blinking screen, with a lighter bar of orange at the top of the monitor. It only did this about a minute or two after windows had loaded up. The only way to fix it was to press the button for shutdown and then quickly turn it back on again. It did this every other shutdown. Next, i started getting slowdown issues all throughout my computer. One day, after I shutdown my computer, I booted it back up and it said Windows cannot find the file C:/windows/System32/config/systemI tried to use the recovery disk and it didn't work because a BSOD showed up whenever i selected the drive with windows on it. I think it said something like PAGE_FILE_UNPAGED_AREA. I don't think that was it exactly, but it was something like that. Basically, i did a lot of things other people said would work and they didn't work. The only thing that managed to get my computer up and running again was to use a 3rd party boot disk, BartPE and to restore a few old registry files that had been corrupted. So, now we get to my current problem... Hi all. Using Win XP PRO SP2
First question is does anyone know if this is a valid exe or is it something with sinister motives? C:\fb4b2f7bbd15c530aa9258b8\setup.exe. I found it in my firewall and thought it looked dubious so I've blocked it until I can establish its intentions.

Second, My automatic update has turned itself off and wont turn back on. I have followed all the solutions I can find and thought It was fixed but when I booted my computer up again it had turned off again. When I click the box to turn it on nothing happens. I got an error message the first time I tried it said
"We're sorry the Security Centre could change your automatic updates settings. To try changing these settings yourself, go to System in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates tab select Automatic(reccomended) then click OK. "
I done this and the System in Control Panel reckons that it is on. Yet, my security center says it is turned off. Ive got a little red shield with a white x on it in my task tray.

Another thing which I think may be related to my auto update problem (just guessing though) is when I run sfc/scannow in command prompt I get the message
"Files that are required to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache. Insert your Windows XP Proffesional Service Pack 2 CD now"
Problem is I havent got one. My computer has got one of them built in complete restore thingymajigs (I dont know the proper name).

Hello all. I bought a Dell Inspiron laptop about 6 months ago. It has been great, no problems. A couple of weeks ago it went to a blank screen after sitting for a while as normal, but not all the way to sleep. When I tried to use it it wouldn't come back up. After trying everything I had to just turn it off via the power button. When it re-booted it was EXTREMELY slow and in fact never got past the windows login screen. After a few attempts I just left it for a while while starting up. It now will boot up and log in, but it takes about 20 minutes or more.

At first, it wouldn't connect to the internet so I re-installed the network adaptor driver and that fixed that problem. But windows still operated very slowly. Once fully logged in the computer operated pretty normally except that McAfee said it wasn't protecting my computer and it won't change. I tried downloading and running Malwarebytes and it took so long that I eventually had to go to bed and when I tried to bring it back to life the next day it was frozen. I tried to run it again and it won't run Malwarebytes.

I have searched for a soluting to this everywhere and can't begin to figure out how to fix it. ANY help would be appreciated. I am running windows 7 home premium. Thanks in advance...

Hello mafishman1 ... welcome aboard

I'd suggest you a few things namely
1. System Restore to a/two months back .
2. Run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker .
3. Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times .
4. Download free Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: Malwarebytes , upgrade it , and have a complete scan .
5. If possible, check your RAM .

RELEVANCY SCORE 44.8

Ok, so I know I'm obviously not the only one who had major problems with Windows 7 Explorer, and I already have Classic Shell which fixes the disc space/file space in DIR issue and copy dialog issues.

But there's lots of other issues that seem to really annoy me, anyone have ideas on fixes? I won't even be able to think of them all at the moment.

-Selecting multiple files, and then rearranging the sort order will lose the selection. Same as moving to another DIR and hitting the back button. The second thing especailly was VERY useful in XP, as it remembers the 'place' in DIRs, and I have some with a large number of files. (But on the flip side, it DOES remember if only one file is selected)

-Clicking on the date modified column will sort descending, XP would do ascending. I much prefer the later.

-Taking out a portable drive while being in its DIR closes Explorer for some reason. XP would just move the selection to the nearest still good DIR. Closing it doesn't make sense...

-I love the ability to 'hide' drives that aren't in use, as this reduces the clutter. Especially since for some reason, showing 'all folders' will list the various dives as 'removeable drive' instead of the type they actually are (SD/MMC, MS/MS-Pro, etc etc). I'd love to be able to fix that, but more importantly, hiding 'all folders' also for some reason hides Recycle Bin. I can open it pretty easily by clicking on the arrow from the first 'breadcrumb' but it'd be nice to have to show automatically.

A:So...lots of Explorer issues. Fixable?

1. CTRL + select individual files will retain the selections through a new sort order. This is exactly the same as in XP. Nothing retains a multiple selection through a change of directory but then I don't remember XP doing that either.

2. Clicking on the column heads toggles ascending, descending (just as in XP!)

3. Not if you use the 'safely disconnect' protocol correctly it doesn't (or at least shouldn't). If you rip them out willy nilly you reap what you sow.

4. Absolutely no idea what you're talking about. I'll need some screen shots to have any idea of what you're trying to do and what you think is going wrong.

5. Discussed elsewhere on this forum of late: if you don't want to see zip files put them in a folder that you don't regularly open. They are sub-folders to all intents and purposes so W7 treats them accordingly.

6. Well do you mean 'in a column' or 'in a blank area'? If you mean the former then that does bring up the context menu for the file on that line. If you mean the latter that will bring up the context menu for the last selected file or the first file if you have not previously selected one in that folder. If you don't get any context menu at all, you're doing it wrong!

7. The automatic sorting thing may be neat but it's not magic. If you flit around folders in the middle of operations it can get confused. Again, you reap what you sow!

Not exactly a convincing argument for taking two steps back to XP!
