System Restore Not Working in Win XP

Q: System Restore Not Working in Win XP

I cannot get my system to perform a successful restore using the System Restore feature of Windows XP SP2. It goes through the steps, reboots and gives me a message that the system cannot be restored to the checkpoint I selected. This happens regardless of the checkpoint I select. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Thanks ...

Preferred Solution: System Restore Not Working in Win XP

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I think we had a discussion on this in the past where one of your restore points is bad and if one is bad, then all are bad. This may or may not be the case, but I am sure that a staff member in this area will be able to expound on it.

So my little sisters boyfriend deleted all the history on my Google Chrome, 'to free up space' and I think he's been on something weird on my laptop, and want to find out. I googled how to get the history back and the other thing I fully understood was to do a System Restore to back before he deleted it. I did that three times to different points in time, definitely before he did it and it hasn't changed anything. If anyone else has any ideas they would be much appreciated, although please bear in mind I'm not massively great with computers! Thank you

A:How to restore Chrome history, system restore not working?

I don't think you can get it back unless you had a backup, System Restore doesn't affect data so that's why it doesn't work.

Why do you need the History restored anyways?

Hi!
I recently noticed that when I do a Google search, the link redirects me to random ad sites, making it nearly impossible to get to the page that I want. I tried System Restore, only to realize it won't let me go past the last step. Also, my CD/DVD drive doesn't seem to be working. You can watch movies and discs in the drive, but it will not recognize a blank disc for burning music or photos.
I have AVG, and it has only detected tracking cookies. I scan with Malwarebytes on a regular basis, and it never seems to find anything. I scanned with AdAware, and it detected tracking cookies as well. I clean out my Cookies and Temporary Internet Files folder quite frequently, but I can't seem to fix the problem.

Thanks for your help!

Please download RootRepeal Rootkit Detector and save it to your Desktop. * Close all programs and temporarily disable your anti-virus, Firewall and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. * Click this link to see a list of such programs and how to disable them. * Create a new folder on your hard drive called RootRepeal (C:\RootRepeal) and extract (unzip) RootRepeal.zip. Accidentally deleted important files, system restore not working
I accidentally deleted some important files when trying to free up space on my laptop. Now, when I startup, it cannot go to my user. I lost my email settings, other functions. My docs are accessible by going to 'My Computer' then to drive C: then to the user, etc. However, from my Start menu, I can't get to them by simply clicking 'My Documents'.

I've tried to do some 'repairs' using Microsoft Knowledgebase but so far have been unsuccessful. I tried some of the suggested things and have made alist of many of the files that are missing when I tried to do a system repair. These files are not in the recovery section c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386. The list is here:

spider.exe
clipbrd.exe
hostmib.dll
staxmem.dll
admexs.dll
appconf.dll
iisadmin.dll
iisfecnv.dll
infocomm.dll

I ran HiJackThis and the results are below.

"There was an unexpected error in the property page: System Restore encounter an error. Please try to run System Restore again (0x81000203)." also all button are greyed out. I wanted take an image to show you but that's not working either. Is there hope?

Hello,
I will try to explain this as best as I can so if you need any more information please ask and I will gladly answer. If this is in the wrong forum I apologize. If it is please redirect me and I will post it there.

I have built 11 computers, all containing the EXACT same hardware and software. I install windows 7(64bit), all the drivers for each component, and activated the copy of windows. The pc will run completely fine running any program I ask it to. The problem does not happen until I reboot the computer, now this is not always on the first reboot. These computers could last a few days and then I reboot and it all breaks. When I randomly reboot the system it will boot up showing problems and asking for a system restore. So I do the system restore and reinstall a few drivers and the same problem will persist.
I eventually get fed up with the whole process and decide to completely reinstall Windows thinking maybe I could have done something wrong(been doing this for 15 years no problem but it happens). After a completely random(as far as I can tell) amount of time and reboots the system will do it again. I am completely stumped on this issue and could really use the help. I have managed to get 2 working for a few weeks now but they hard bent cpu pins from the factory and I straightened them out. The other ones I have checked and they are fine(so it seems).
The System is running an ASUS P8Z77-v PRO motherboard, EVGA Nvidia 650 TI graphics card, i7-3770 CPU(may be an... Read more

Hello to all,

A month back I accidentally deleted the wow6432 node from my registry under system_user. I believe this is the root of all my problems. Once I did that, my toshiba c885 D 64 bit would not boot. I forced the computer to shut down and pressed f12 to get to the system recovery options. I then restored to a point before my blunder. Well, my laptop worked for a while and then magically the screen goes black and will not reboot. I did sestem restore a few more times since I could get a little bit of work done in between restoring and the screen turning black again. After I was fed up with having to run system restore every other day, I decided to run system refresh to keep my files but reset everything else. After restoring I am getting the same problem and find myself again running system restore every other day just to keep working.

My questions are if I completely reinstall windows 8 and start from scratch, will this definitely solve the problem? I thought system refresh would have worked, so I'm not sure. Also, are there any other available options for me to fix my computer without starting from scratch?

Thanks so much in advance! -Aaron

A:System Restore and System Refresh not working completely!

Hi awrontherise,

Since you did not provide your specs, all my suggestions are just speculative in nature; however, I can tell you that a clean install will fix all system software corruption but if you also have hardware and/or driver issues they will have to be addressed separately. So, based on what you have told us so far, I would recommend this as your first step:

Repair Install Windows 8

Now, if the above doesn't work, you may have to take this route:

Clean Install - Windows 8

Good luck.

The other day I was trying to figure out what coral paintshop pro meant by security key, so I googled it. Something popped up and asked me if I wanted to download, and I wanted to say no, but my laptop's mouse is too sensitive at times, so I accidentally clicked yes. My computer automatically shut down right after that. Every time I turn it on now, it goes straight into System Repair and it doesn't work, it says it cannot repair. I've tried System Restore, but since that doesn't get rid of the documents that have been downloaded, it isn't helping either. My computer won't even let me enter any form of Safe Mode, it just goes straight back to System Repair. Please help me. My Aunt got me this laptop for my High School graduation and I cannot afford to have someone fix my computer right now.

I recently downloaded some drivers as I was trying to install a new printer who's software would'nt load. This did'nt solve the problem. I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. I tried to install yesterday (28th July) but could'nt and my PC keeps switching itself off near the end of the installation. I then thought I would use System restore to go back to a happier time when I had the first Brother printer. I actually used System restore about 4 times in one afternoon and now it won't let me restore any further back than the 28th. I thought if I could go back far enough the drivers I had downloaded would be dormant and save me trouble. I am a complete novice so if you can help me with this problem please post it in baby language, thanks in advance.

My main problem is that I accidentally uninstalled MS Office earlier today from my Dell Inspiron which I bought in 2012; the second problem is that I can't do a system restore to get it back to the point before the accidental un-installation. I'm on Windows 8. It keeps telling me there's something wrong but when I run a check on the C: drive, everything comes up fine. I opened the computer in safe mode, do a system restore and same thing happens - error.

I don't know if I can locate the original MS Office card that I received when I got the computer, to re-install the program, which is why I'm in a bit of a panic right now. Help is appreciated -- thanks!

One quick possibility. Go to the services icon in administrative tools and check that system restore is set to automatic. If it's disabled or on manual reset it to automatic. Once you get your machine make a restore point and lebel it 'after cleanup' or something like that. Any time you install or remove something, even upgrade a driver or run checkdisk, make a system restore point. It can save you major headaches.

A:system restore not working

Hi Megan and welcome to TSF !

Do you have the XP install disk ? If so go to start => run and type sfc /scannow (mind the space after sfc). This will run the system file checker which will replace any missing or corrupt system file you could have with a good copy. It may ask you for the XP CD. Don't do anything while it's running.

Better to scan your hard drive for errors as well. Go to start => run and type chkdsk c: /F /R (provided c is the volume letter of your system drive). Answer no when it asks to unmount the volume then yes to schedule the scan during next restart and reboot the computer. Report here if it found any error.

If that didn't help then go to start => run and type eventvwr.msc. In the event viewer check the different sections on the left (security, system, application) and tell us about any error there could be there. Tell us about the source and the event number, double click the error and paste the text under description (right-click won't work so use ctrl+c ctrl+v to copy paste that text after you highlighted it).

What could possibly be wrong?

A:system restore not working on Win 8.1

Hello, Johnf. Sorry to read your having problems.

I just restored mine yesterday. It does take quite a long time. I do remember the busy circle, but I can't for the life of me remember if it changed to a different screen after a while. that sequence took approximately 10 to 15 minutes. It eventually stated it was restarting, the screen went dark, and I could see it working again for approximately 5 minutes. It then booted again and worked again for another 5 minutes before I got a lock screen, then after hitting a key, a sign-in screen.

How long did yours run with the busy circle before you hard reset it? Also, I think it not to be a good idea to hard reset while it's in that mode, but obviously it rebooted to do it again.

Hello

My system restore fails every time I attempt it. This has happened the last 3 times I had a need to attempt restore. (Three attempts separated by months in time, about different issues.) This time, I am thinking something may be wrong with my system restore function.

In this case, it is simply a matter of trying to roll back a browser update.

I saw a whole list of available restore points, and I went to the second one back - from only a few days ago. The restore failed.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, OEM from Gateway Laptop about 1.5 yrs old. I allow most updates.

Any Suggestions? Thanks.

Hello there. i'm having some trouble with my computer. i came home from a two week trip to find my computer had the "antivirus 2009" virus on it and i think it may have had a couple others as well. what was happening at first was my computer would just restart itself. then when i typed something in google the links would redirect me to an ad search site or some random site. well eventually i fixed the redirect problem (can't remember how now). so i went around many different forums and eventually read about hijackthis. so when i tried to install hijackthis it wouldn't work...i would click install>run and nothing would happen. same with spybot search and destroy, i would install but when it would try to download something it would just stop working. When i tried System restore it said "windows cannot restore to this point please choose another restore point" none of them would work. i tried creating a new system restore point but it said "cannot create a system restore point please restart your computer and try again". thats when i read something about UnHackMe. i installed and ran that program which enabled me to install hijackthis. now i have hijackthis installed but dont know anything about registry keys. so if anyone can help i would appreciate it very much.

So I am trying to get my SYSTEM RESTORE to function. The rest of the computer seems OK.
I run SPYBOT S&D and SUPER SpywareProfessional as well as Windows Defender and Windows Security.
Any idea HOW to RESTORE my System Restore ???

To do a system restore click start > run, copy this text: %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe into the dialogue and press enter. It's a pretty easy wizard but it probably won't fix your problem.

I have an issue that is somewhat related to this. I uninstalled Adobe Acrobat from my computer yesterday, and when it was finished it said I needed to restart my system for changes to take effect, so I did, and that is when things went sour for me. For some reason, Windows decided to have a corrupt ntfs file system after this, and required a check disk to be run to reboot. So, I let it finish, and got back to the desktop, and tried to run system restore, but it kept saying there was a problem with my file system and I needed to run a check disk again when I restarted the computer again. So, I restared, and it ran the check disk, and got back to the desktop. So, again I tried to run system restore, but now when I clicked it to run it nothing would happen, except that it would freeze up the start menu?? What is going on here please??

My System restore is not working.
Im on AOL and Windows xp.

click on a restore date,
then, when i get to the page that says Confirm restore point selection; i click "next"
and nothing happens.

Im useing System restore to reconnect to "dailbb".
I loose my "dailbb" connection about every seven to ten days, and as my System restore is now not working, i have to phone AOL and thay talk me through reconnecting. But im getting a bit sick of phoneing.

Anyone else having trouble with looseing "dailbb"

A couple of days ago I uninstalled 2 programs that I didn't need anymore . Now I think I may need one of them . I've tried to run System Restore but I keep getting an error message . I disabled MSE and PrevX and it still would not restore .
Now I'm not too worried about getting the program back , but would like to be able to restore my system if I ever need to .
Any suggestions ?

The other day i installed some buggy drivers for my sound card that left a redundant icon in the control panel, so I thought I'd do a system restore, the only point I could restore to was from about 2 months ago, it was better than nothing, so I tried to restore to it. After a long time i get some message about the shadow copy has timed out. I decided to try in safe mode, which worked. But still the same error message out of safe mode if I boot normal windows. I read on some site that I must make sure that the system restore service is running, I check in services, guess what... no system restore service. I'm not sure at all about what to do now...

A:System restore not working

Generally, you can just use the roll back functionality in Device Manager in Vista to restore a previous driver.

The service is not present in Vista. SR is handled by the volume shadow copy service (and others).

See if you can create a restore point. Go to Start > Search (or Run), and type:

systempropertiesprotection.exe

I am on the road and trying to do a system restore. I use an external hard drive in my office
but I do not have the external hard drive with me now. I can not get the restore to complete and I can not get the undo to fully complete. Is this not working fully because I am not hooked up to my external hard drive? When I initiated the restore it asked something about the external hard drive. Any thoughts?

Just a tip; You might want to help your enquiry out by writing the full error message rather than 'said something about...'

System Restore will work only when I run it in Safe Mode. When I try to run it normally it goes through the normal process but the message at the end is that it has not been possible to restore my pc to the chosen date and that nothing has been changed. There is presumably a fault or corruption somewhere in my system, any ideas please on how I can identify and remove it?

I tend to have problems with Firefox taking an unusually long time to load pages, and normally, I can solve that with using a System Restore. This time, though, I can't get System Restore to work. I've tried several times from various checkpoints, but each time I get a message saying "Incomplete Restoration."

I know this topic has been posted before, and I tried using the advice given in this thread http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/459314-system-restore-incomplete.html. I disabled AVG Anti-Virus, but I didn't help. I know from the previous thread that you'll need to look at the system restore logs in order to help; so, I'll just post those now to save time.

avgupd.exe.old is related to AVG.

You could try uninstalling AVG to see if System Restore comes back to life. Use the AVG Remover.

I am not sure this is the right forum, but I thought I would start here.

I attempted to restore to a point I created last night. I received a message that the system could not be restored to that point. I also received a warning that my Avast AV 2015 Background Service was not running. The computer was running slow. I ran system restore again to undo the restore point and after the shutdown and restart I received another error message that the system could not be restore to the point I started from. I also received the same Avast warning. It appears the desktop has some icons from last night, as well as some from today.

I suspect the Avast AV may be causing a problem with the system restore, but I am not sure.

I ran sfc /scannow and it did not find any code integrity violations.

I could use some help on how to proceed. Thanks.

A:System Restore not working

Why don't you say what error message was displayed?
Shutdown AVAST or even better.... uninstall it, so it can't interfere in the process

System Restore won't work on this machine - it keeps switching itself off.

If I go to the System Restore settings, I can switch it on and create a restore point. The restore point is then shown if I immediately check the list of available restore points.

After a short period of time, e.g. 20 minutes, checking the System Restore settings shows that it's switched off and my restore point has disappeared.

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks

Hi all ,
I clicked on system restore and got the message

" system restore is unable to protect your computer . Please restart and try again"

I rebooted several times and got the same message .
I then accessed system restore with view of switching it off and on again . i checked the on / off box then clicked on apply changes and got the following message

"System restore encountered a problem trying to enable/disable one or more drives. Please restart your machine and try again later"

I then thought that if i slide the disc space bar down to zero it may clear out system restore but i got the same message as when i tried turning it off .
i went into safe mode and searched for the wininit.ini file with the view of renaming it but this isn't the problem.

Hi,
I have been trying to restore my computer to a couple days previously but it just won't work. I've been trying to do this to restore an art program I use daily that I somehow managed to reset my settings on and I can't fix it. I keep getting the error message 0x80070571 and I ran chkdsk/r last night then ran system restore but it still did not work. I disabled Windows Defender temporarily and it still did not work. I even ran it in Safe Mode and it still didn't work. I scanned for viruses and there's none so I'm pretty sure it's not that. I also went through services.msc and started Volume Shadow Copy service because it wasn't started then restored again but it did not work. Can anyone help? I'm running sfc/scannow at the moment.
My computer is a HP 15-f039wm Notebook PC running Windows 8.1 OS. I've had it for less than a year I believe, with no problems.

I'm having a problem with System Restore working. I'm trying to restore back to a point, and after rebooting and logging in, the Restore gives me a message saying "Restoration Incomplete" and tells me that no changes were made. I don't know what to do anymore.
I found another thread that advised turning off Symantec security, but I use AVG, and chances are, it was on when the restore point was made. I'm new here so I'm not sure if this is the right place to post.
I use a Windows XP Home.
If any more information is needed (I'm not sure) just tell me.

After doing a fresh windows xp pro installation, I found out that System Restore was not working. I can't restore at an early time because all days are blank, and I can't create a restore point. I followed this guide http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302796 and I got stuck on Method 3 because I'm not seeing what I supposed to see... Here is a screenshot:What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

A:System Restore Not Working

Hello.

Your disk looks fine to me . Method three was simply to check if you had enough space for System Restore. You have a few hundred times more than enough.

Proceed to method 4 and 5 and tell use if any of those work.

With Regards,
The Panda
