Anyone here specialize in Printer psychology?

Q: Anyone here specialize in Printer psychology?

Running a HP 1220C (Love it more everyday). Unfortunately HP has discontinued them otherwise I would have got another one in case this one croaks.

But last Friday I had to reboot cause I installed a anti-virus update. So after rebooting I shut down cause I was heading out of town for the weekend. But at the last minute I decided to print out maps of both O'hara and Denver International, so I knew where the gates for my connecting and departing flights were.

I tried multiple times to get the printer to power up with no luck, so I gave up. And then tonight messing around with it the same results. So I reinstalled the driver package for it and that IMO didn't help so the thought was going through my mind I was going to have to look into a new printer.

But while reading my e-mail's, the looney thing powered up on its own. Practically scared me out of my chair.

What possibilities is there that would cause something like this and what could I do to correct it?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Anyone here specialize in Printer psychology?

Double click the desktop icon (My Computer, ect..)>then double click printers> & right click & select properties of the printer you are using.> Then left click the Control tab at the top of the dialog box.> Look for something that says Auto Power Off/On (or something like that).

Set it to what you want.........or not at all.

You can set the printer to automatically come on whenever you press the Print button on most programs. And the printer will automatically turn itself off after a selected number of minutes/hours, if you aren't using it.

You also have quite a few other things that you can set to tailor to you desires, such as print w/color or Black & white...paper size, graphic control, ect...

Play around with it & have fun. If you really screw it up badly, you can always delete the printer installed (from the Printers folder) & then just re-install by double clicking the Add Printer icon in the printers folder & select the brand name & model # that you have plugged into your computer.

The social psychology of cybersecurity:

Despite the intrinsically psychological nature of many cybersecurity attacks, research into the role of psychology in cybersecurity is still limited. Indeed, even research into social engineering is often conducted from the discipline of computing rather than social psychology.

The need for a social psychological approach is also suggested by the fact that large-scale cybersecurity incidents ? stemming from motivations as varied as financial gain and political/ideological protest ? are often instigated by groups, as opposed to individuals acting alone.

Impression management and social identity-
A characteristic of hacktivist groups and cyberattackers is the mystery around the identity of their members and the actual reach or capabilities of the group. This is of course necessary in some cases so that individuals can avoid being identified by law enforcement agencies, but many of these groups have become adept at brand management for the promotion of themselves and their cause. Anyhow, where I work we have a single DR PC what has our basic company software/programs on and is imaged, and then deployed out to a large multiple of identical PC's at our disaster recovery facility in the event when needed. Our DR facility is connected
to our AD domain.
The DR PC's we use are HP EliteDesk 800G2 Desktop Mini's and have Windows 7 Pro x64 on them.  Now capturing and restoring the image is not an issue and is is done via PXE booting using Symantic Ghost.

I have two major issues that need to be resolved very soon as we have a DR test coming up in a couple of months where we push the image out to a large number of identical PC's and test everything down in DR.

Issue 1: When ever sysprep is run with the "/generalize" option, windows fails to boot/reboot. Just get
a black screen in a continuous re-booting loop. Not even any error message, absolutely nada is shown!
Maybe it's got something to do with he ultra modern hardware/chipset/platform of the HP EliteDesk G2; all USB port are USB3 and the boot drive is a NVMe SSD.
To resolve this issue, I have to restore the image to the DR PC via PXE.
And Yes I have the following in my Autounattend.xml file under the

Hello -
In the past we applied copyprofile to our answerfiles used at the sysprep stage before we captured images and deployed them using WDS.
We are now trying to sys prep and capture the image without this answer file -- but then apply the answer file with copyprofile set to true in the specialize pass to the captured image in WDS (checking "allow image to install in unattended mode"
in the install image properties and setting the file)
We had tested this successfully before but now we are failing on the specialize pass. Setuperr.log seems to show the copy profile failing.
When does copy profile need to be applied? Must it be applied via an answer file at the sysprep stage in order to work properly? Or can an answer file with copyprofile set to true be applied to the captured install image in WDS?

Thank you -

Hi all, I've been working on a new x64 image in what is predominantly an x86 client environment. So, MDT (2010) is what we're using to deploy - and it all seemed to go very well after imaging a bunch of laptops with a .wim file with which I integrated
SP1 manually (using DISM). I then went to integrate all the latest updates in the same way, but sadly this didn't work as there was an update of some description which seemed to break it (I excluded a couple of updates known to cause issues).

So, I decided to work on capturing a wim from a VM after I applied all the updates. Something that seemed to go pretty seamlessly, but sadly when I copy the wim over, then run the deployment, I get a failure on the 'specialize' pass. There are several points
at which the BDD log states it cannot find the product key, but then we use KMS so I'm assuming this isn't needed. That being said, there is a key in the unattend.xml, so I've become a little confused by this..
Here's the specialize portion of the unattend.xml:

An interesting study on the global underground company shows that money can get you anything -- wherever you are.

China's hacking hardware, the United States' assassins or Japan's taboo content -- in the Dark Web, only money matters.

On Tuesday, Trend Micro researchers released a whitepaper (.PDF) documenting the results of an investigation into the Web's underbelly, asking if the underground is connected globally, or whether there are countries which have a certain illegal "specialization" in goods or services.

There are three loose layers of the Internet; the "Clear" Web, the "Deep" Web and the "Dark" Web. The Clear Web is where we go for daily tasks and to visit standard websites through search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo.

The "Deep" Web is the layer underneath which is not indexed by standard search engines, and has to be accessed through a service such as the Tor network to access .onion websites hosted in this area.

Lastly, the "Dark" Web is a fraction of the Deep Web where illegal dealings take place, such as the purchase of weapons, drugs, counterfeit documents and hacking tools.

The average person is unlikely to go beyond the Clear Web, but the rest of the Internet is open to anyone using the right setup.
Over the past few years, Trend Micro has conducted a number of research projects focusing on these areas and the underground economy at large. Within the latest resear... Read more

Hello,

We're deploying Windows 8.1 to our public computing labs right now. This is the first time we're doing mass deployments with SCCM and we've run into the dreaded sysprep error just after applying the image. I think we've
narrowed this down to drivers but can't seem to figure it out. As an example, *almost none* of our hundreds of Optiplex 9010s will accept the image, yet hundreds of other models (Optiplex 7010, Optiplex 9020) accept the same image without issue.

I saw plenty of other posts about this error but I don't think this could be an unattend file or sysprep issue. Why would it work on some machines but not others?

Has anyone experienced a similar issue?

Thanks in advance!!

Error:
Sysprep could not parse or process the unattend answer file for pass [specialize]. The settings specified in the answer file cannot be applied. The error was detected while processing settings for component [Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup].

Log Files:
Will post separately.

A:SCCM Windows 8.1 Deployment - Sysprep could not parse or process the unattend answer file for pass specialize

For those with a similar issue -

This turned out to be a driver problem for us, as suspected. In speaking with Premier Support, we dug through the CBS.log on a failed machine and confirmed it. In CBS, we traced the setup process to where drivers get installed and found a couple failures
(network, audio, etc.). Setup failed immediately after that process.

We were under the impression that our device drivers were current in SCCM, however they were not. In SCCM, we were ignoring driver import errors while using the Dell Command Deploy Utility for CABs. The errors were a result of the 2008 site server's inability
to recognize the newer Windows 8.1 drivers. We applied KB 2837108 and KB 2921916 to the site server and re-imported drivers. The sysprep error went away after this.

I setup an ACER VM6620G (Win7x86) how I wanted, including disabling the administrator account and creating an administrator user "PVA"
Navigated to \\wds\DeploymentShare$\Scripts and ran the litetouch script. Chose my "Sysprep and Capture" task.
Everything went off without a hitch until I restarted the technician pc.
I got the dreaded
"Windows could not parse or process unattend answer file [C:\windows\Panther\unattend.xml] for pass [specialize]. A component or setting specified in the answer file does not exist"
I tried to deploy the captured image to the same computer and got the same error
I've scoured the internet for solutions (Shift+10 opens command prompt. Good to know!) with no luck.
I've saved the unattend.xml and looked for errors- going as far as to install an x86 Win7 virtual machine to validate the unattend.xml file in WISM

Other information that might be useful:
I never used WISM to create an unattend.xml nor did I attach one to the image.
I didn't try to copy user profiles/settings/migrate etc
I imported the captured image to WDT. Created a standard task and added 2 nodes
     -Inject Drivers
     -Install Application

As a side, I've got another image that I've already injected the drivers/installed the application as a test. Everything went smoothly.

Hi there,
I have a WDS server setup with images but I am having trouble with the unattend answer file bit. I always get an error after deploying in image during setup that it had trouble during the Speicalize phase. I believe it has something to do with the product
key most likely. I am wanting to skip product key entirely and leave it blank as the computers I'm deploying are all Lenovo business computers with the on board chip for activation.

The exact error I get is
"Windows could not parse or process the unattend answer file for pass [specialize]. The settings specified in the answer file cannot be applied. The error was detected while processing settings for component [Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup]"

I am able to get the computer up and running by going into REGEDIT, Childcompletion key and changing the value of "Setup" from 1 to 3 but I am wondering how I can prevent this entirely.

A:Windows 8 - cannot share a printer error message appears "[Window Title] Printer Properties [Main Instruction] Printer settings could not be saved. There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper. [OK]

You may need to reinstall the printer. Remove the printer driver from Control Panel\Programs and Features, then add the printer from Devices and Printers.

Please note that if the printer driver is not in the list in Devices and Printers, I suspect that the printer is currently not compatible with Windows 8. In this case I suggest you contact the printer manfuacturer for more information.

Hi,

My computer is working fine - but I recently purchased a new Samsung ML2570 laser printer that just died when the starter cartridge ran out of toner (or actually when the printer counter hit its predetermined set no. - probably 1000). At least I think that's what happened. The starter cartridges come without fuses. Replacement cartridges or toner refill kits come with fuses that are supposed to reset the counters, so when I refilled the starter cartridge and inserted the fuse that came with the kit, the printer still didn't work. I tried again with two more fuses, with no luck. I don't have a printer jam and all the doors are well-latched before I turn it on. Does anyone have any idea what I should do next to get my printer working again? My email is [email protected]

Regards, and thanks for any help,

I tried selecting “Connect to this printer” but I do not know what name to type in (Example is \\server\\printer). I tried selecting “Connect to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network” but I do not what URL to type in (Example is http://server/printer/myprinter/printer). Therefore, I cancelled the installation.
I had then installed its Printer Utility. The utility is capable of finding the printer and showing me it’s Properties. However, I still ended up with no printer listed to use in Printers and Faxes.

I could install this printer with printer server on W98/ME because their Add Printer Wizards allow me to use either the IP address or the hardware address to locate the printer server.

My Mom has an HP laptop. She recently purchased a new HP printer and I have been trying for the last 4 days to get it to install/connect. I've been in touch with HP but the links they provide aren't resolving the issues.

First, using the CD that came with the printer: hangs up at around 85-90%. It doesn't not show up as installed. I copied the CD to the desktop, modified Setup.exe in CFFExplorer and Run as Administrator and it appears to completely install; however, when I go to Device Manager, it says no driver is found. I sometimes have the option to update and sometimes that seems to work but I can't access it through Add a Printer (which has the green bar run across the top, then pulsate and freeze).

Trying to install using the driver I download from HP results in no installing screen appearing but it does hang up in the background and the only way to stop it is to Restart. The same thing happens if I try to use HPs Wizard.

I've installed several HP printers through the years and not had this much trouble. That doesn't even include the dozens of times I've had to reinstall my own HP printer because of its contrariness!

Additionally, attempts to uninstall the old printer results in it hanging up/freezing soon in to the process, whether I try to uninstall from the Start menu, file or Uninstall program. I'm not even being able to get the Windows Updates to install - that process also just hangs up/freezes. FYI - I've not checked her machine in a while so there are ma... Read more

A:Unable to install printer drivers, uninstall old printer, update Windo

Hi columbia93, welcome to 7F!

Printers are touchy animals, when installing any printer you have to follow the install procedures exactly as described by the manufacturer.

This may be the root cause:

Quote:
FYI - I've not checked her machine in a while

Not that you haven't been able to check it, but there may be an accumulation of problems on your Mom's machine that also are stopping the update process.

I am trying to find one of 7F's tutorials on improving performance of a computer, but it boils down to cleaning out all detritus that a machine can accumulate of a period of time.
I did find this but there is another one: Hard Disk Space - Free Up and Recover The first three options would help

Run Antimalware/virus scans, run a Check Disk then a sfc /scannow then try to uninstall that old printer driver, and if that works shut down the machine, and try to install the printer without the HP disk, when it looks, but asks if you have the disk say no and allow the OS to install what it has.
It is my understanding that HP Printer drivers already come with Windows 7.

But do the cleanup first and see if that helps.

I'm having difficulty getting the printer which is attached to a Win XP Pro system to be available for use by a Win ME system on the same network.

The printer is a HP Deskjet 697C. It is installed and working on the Win XP Pro system.
Both systems can see each other on the network and transfer files back and forth with no difficulty.
The printer on the XP system is marked for Sharing and File and Print Sharing is enabled.
The XP Firewall is turned off, as we use Zone Alarm Security Suite.

When I use Add Printer on the WinME machine, and try to browse for a network printer, I can expand the network to see the computer name of the XP machine, but the shared printer doesn't show up as a choice.

What are we doing wrong?

A:Solved: Can't Add HP 697C Printer connected to WinXP Pro into WinME printer choices

What is the share name for the printer? Win ME uses NetBIOS for local shares, and has a limit of 12 characters to a share name.

Hello, I am happy to supply whatever tech info to resolve this issue which has defeated me for 6 months. I cannot connect my HP G60 laptop Vista to HP printer or Kodak. Having looked at old threads I am not the only person to run up against this very hard problem. I would prefer not to bin my Laptop and buy an apple mac for compatability issues with 3rd party software. My solution at present is using a stick and transferring to XP sony lap top which is a nightmare as both have different versions of microsoft office. I am new to this forum and apologise in advance if my thread post does not meet the standards required of this collective. many best wishes to all.

Hi Guys,

I'm getting quite frustrated with this issue and wondering if anyone has seen it, and able to resolve the issue. The issue is I have a network printer selected as the default in Windows 10. I have the option "Let Windows manage my default printer" turned off. At one point randomly, the default printer goes back to the Adobe PDF as the default.

Steps taken:

* I have checked the registry settings to ensure that the options "let Windows manage my default printer" is switched off. I can confirm this.
* Switched the default printer back to the network printer and performed a reboot. The network printer remains as the default. At some point of the day it goes back to Adobe PDF.
* Had a Microsoft support dude to look at the issue, but he has no idea either.

A few of my pilot users has also experience the same issue. Any ideas anyone?

I am running windows xp pro, I had installed sp2 and found usb problems. In trying to fix the problem I accidentally deleted the port the printer was using, the "virtual usb port". I have recently removed the sp2 from my computer which helped in other areas but my printer is not being recognized by anything since deleting that port. Does anyone know how I can get that port back. All other usb devices work fine, scanner mouse keyboard ect..With power on to the printer it shows "printer not responding" or "printer offline". The printer is a cannon s9000. If it helps I am running a Abit kt-7a raid mobo, 1.4ghz amd athlon, win xp pro build 2600. I thought of installing xp on top of the current install but wasn't sure if i'd make things worse..Any help greatly appreciated.

My new windows 7 computer is a dell package from staples. It's an Inspiron 660, 3 ghz, 4 megs ram, 64 bit, intel pentium processor. It's running Windows 7 Home edition. It's on a 'workgroup' network with two xp machines, one of which shares data files that reside on the win7 machine.

My usb receipt printer is an Epson tm-u220D. This printer is not plug and play, so the driver had to be downloaded and force fed. No problem there really; after a few tries we got the printer to print a test page and the accounting software (Bottom Line Accounting) seems to recognize it fine.

This setup is used as the cash register in a retail store, and prints receipts for customers on paper rolls.

Here is the minor glitchy problem - when we print a receipt it prints fine, but then we can see the red error light on the printer start flashing, and the next receipt won't print until we switch the printer off and back on. Also we see a local downlevel document in the queue that goes away in about a half minute whether we turn the printer off or not, and it instantly disappears if we do turn it off.

It's gonna be a pain to switch the printer off and back on between every two customers.

Surely there is an easy fix for this problem - any printer experts out there? Thanks in advance!

Hi to all.

I am having an annoing problem with shared printers.

The user that share a printer lose the default printer in any case when another user print on this shared and it turn immediatly default printer only for the user that share the printer.

The printer shared is a label printer without network port and all was working very well before this , in my opinion, unusefull improve.

All user have the " not manage default option" , win 10 pro but seems that "default option" do not effect at all with shared printers.

It is clear that is a very bad working for the sharing printer user that have to check every time what the actual default printer.

any suggestion or is it a win 10 bug ?

I'm an intern at a non-profit for the summer and was given my own little office. The small problem I have is with trying to print webpages, specifically the format that a page would be when you try to print off google maps...
When printing in other programs such as office I can select which printer. (There are 5 network printers, 2 that print double sided, 2 that are desktop units in other people's cubes, and 1 that is the fax machine). However when printing off a webpage I am only given two options, "MS Office Document Image Writer" and "Microsoft XPS Document Writer".
How can I make any of the other printers availible/show up when I'm trying to print a webpage? The tech guy is covering about 4 other jobs and told me I'm free to fiddle/add/edit system stuff on my machine. I tend to be pretty good about most things but am not experienced with networking.
Any help would be appreciated, let me know if any clarification is necessary.
I'm running Windows XP all current updates have been installed.
Thanks!

When I tried to install a new Canon Pixma ip6220D printer on my Sony Vaio Windows XP Media Edition w/ SP2 desktop I receive an error that the computer cannot detect the printer after I hook-up the USB cable to the computer from the printer. This is after a balloon dialog appears in the system tray noting that new hardware was found - the hardware being a Canon ip6220D. The Canon software notes that it could not detect the printer and that there was a printer driver failure. Eventually a Windows error box appears noting that an error occurred installing the new hardware.

I have the same problem with a printer that previously had no problems. That printer is a HP Photosmart 3210xi.

I ran malware check using Threat Fire 3 which didn't find anything.

I have tried different USB ports with no success. I have tried USB ports that other devices use with no success.

Any suggestions on how to attack this problem would be appreciated.

I am trying to load printer drivers from the original disk for an HP 5510 multi-function printer onto the printer server of a Buffalo LinkStation LS-VL 1TB NAS Drive. I am using the Add a Printer Wizard and everything goes smoothly until I am asked to choose the appropriate printer driver from a list of different manufacturers and models. As I do not see my model listed under HP, I click the "Have Disk" button and a dialogue box which reads from the D:\ (my CD-ROM drive) pops-up and when I click "Browse" another dialogue box pops-up which lists some folders and files on the CD including autorun.inf. However, when I choose this file to install the drivers, I get a message that says the "disk does not contain information about your printer" and refuses to install. Any ideas?

(Please note that I was able to install this printer seamlessly on 2 Windows 7 machines, and 1 Windows Vista machine using the same procedure. These machines are on the same network with the same NAS hanging off it.)

A:Downloading Printer Driver from Disk in Add Printer Wizard

You need to pick the inf file for the driver that you want to install. It is probably further down in the folders possibly under your operating system.

But it is never a good idea to use the software that comes with hardware. It is old, often first release, often buggy, and sometimes not even compatible with some updates. Go to the site and get the latest package.

If you are reading this, your solution helped me reinstall my printer. I was getting the print spooler app error message in Vista, as you were, and this is what I did upon following the advice in your blog. You definately helped me with a frustrating problem, and now I would like to help others with the same problem.

1. I went to Device Manager and clicked on View -> Show Hidden
Devices. Selected System Devices. And Uninstalled both the UMBus
Enumerator as well as the UMBus Root Bus Enumerator.

2. Rebooted.

3. Downloaded the drivers for my printer (Dell A960)

4. Installed the drivers for my printer from the download.

5. Printer worked.

I have a new Lenovo Windows 7 PC. I have a Brother MFC-9440CN printer directly attached to it via USB. Per instructions, I did NOT install any Brother software on the new PC. I just connected it via USB and the PC automatically installed the drivers, etc. Printing from that PC to the locally attached printer works like a champ. I have set up this printer via a network share (called BrotherMFC) so I can use this printer from other PCs.

I have a Dell desktop Windows XP PC (that used to be the computer that had this printer locally attached) and a Dell laptop with Windows Vista that I want to access this printer via the network. On each of these PCs, I have gone through the "Add a Printer" wizard and I selected network (vs. local) printer and find the printer share. However when I select the printer share and click OK, it appears to try and install software or something and says the printer driver on the printer server is incorrect. How can this driver be "incorrect" when it is the driver the new PC used to install? Is there a "special" driver the system needs to act as a printer server properly? Or is there any known compatibility issues of printing via a network share form Windows XP and Vista PCs to Windows 7?

I know the most optimum solution is to get a wireless print server, but this solution of using a network/printer share over the network has worked great and saves me having to spend $80/$100 on a wireless print server.

I was setting up some printers on a computer that were connected to the network.

Add a Printer > Local Printer (uncheck the box immediately below) > Create a Port: Standard TCP/IP Port

That's just how we do it. When I set up the ports, however, I did it wrong. Instead of 10.10.1.10, I created a port on 10.10.10.1 which leaves me with more ports than printers. Can't find the setting that lets me go in there and delete the ports.

I *can* go into a printer's properties, select the port with a checkbox, and delete the port. But that also deletes (and makes me reinstall) the printer. What's the trick to getting just these ports deleted from my machine?

I have tried the XP compatibility mode as well as XP and Win7 printer drivers but no success.

I have had no problem installed the printer on another hard drive with Win 7

Brother says my Vista is corrupted and contact support.microsoft.com . How nice, Doing a web search, it seems that Brother definitely has compatibility issues with Vista judging on all the posts. Unfortunately I see few solutions.

We have a Canon iP3500 connected to a desktop running XP Home SP2. The desktop connects wirelessly to our router. I have laptop running Vista Basic SP1 with a wired connection to the router. The printer is shared and almost all programs running on the laptop can print to the iP3500 with no problem.

One of the software packages that came with the printer, "Canon Easy PhotoPrint EX", installed with no problem on the laptop. When I try to run the program, a pop-up box reports "Printing cannot be executed because a printer supported by the software is not installed." I can click OK to continue running the program but can not print anything. Canon tech support has confirmed that the software does not support a shared Canon printer on another computer.

I had thought I had come across a utility over a year ago (before we purchased the printer) that would map a shared printer on another computer to appear as a local USB connected printer. Trying to use Google to find the program is giving me way too many hits on web pages with discussions on general USB printer sharing issues on networked computers.

Does anybody know of such a program and provide a link please?

When I look in my print jobs it shows the info is waiting to be printed and sometimes it says printer paused. Also, if I go in to cancel the jobs it will not print anything until I restart.

How are you connected? By what sort of network and what is the device in the printer to which you plug the network card.
This is fairly common in our area with those using Belkin Wireless.
But we find that most clients are not properly connecting everything in the network... using the Microsoft and HP network troubleshooting usually cures the problem.

I don`t know what the error means, but have you tried uninstalling then reinstalling the printer?

Check the cables for damage and connection.

If this doesn`t work then maybe a new printer is in order.
